Best sd card, will speed make a big difference?? - Nook HD, HD+ Accessories

Hi All,
I am most probably going to buy a nook 9 hd+ today, and am looking at what sd card to put in it.
I will load cm10 onto the memory card, so as the whole system is running off the sd card, im guessing
it will pay off to get a good quality sd card??
Im thinking a class 10 samsung or sandisk, probably a 32gb one.
Any suggestions/comments?

If you search in the HD/HD+ forums there are whole threads on this subject. Class 10 are not the best. SanDisk class 4 are the best. Getting the right card is critical when running from SD.

Wintec Class 10 microSDHC 16GB Card - $29.49

Saw this card on Newegg today. Pretty cheap for a Class 10 16GB card and reviewers state it meets Class 10 standards, and that it appears to be a rebranded Samsung card, so it is a quality product.
Android only supports Class 6, meaning this card should be plenty quick, and will utilize full Class 10 potential during file transfers over USB.

Wintec 16gb CL10
Just got the Wintec 16gb CL10 from Newegg, put it in my Sprint Hero to format and as soon as it finish saying setting SD card the screen locked up. removed battery/ installed and saw installed apps icons were gone in its places gear icon. Installed original 8gb and app icons were back but apps came up with FC. removed each app and reinstalled and they work fine now. I'm afraid to put the 16gb back in, it seems fine in my laptop. I have no idea whats wrong!
I got one of these around Christmas. Formatted, partitioned and transferred my stuff. I thought all was well until I had to restore a nandroid and it bootlooped. I put my old 8G Sandisk back in and haven't tried again. So my experience was it worked about a week. I guess it's a write/read issue. I had trouble with recovery mounting the card to even see my backups. I had read reviews of spotty quality and I guess I had the bad luck of the draw.
hmmm ok then I guess i'll pass on this one. I want to get one that'll last so i can transfer it to a new phone when i upgrade.
on htc website, it says microSD 2.0 compatable, & i know some phones can only support so much extra storage, ie: some say microSD up to 16gb, so maybe the hero doesnt support high capasity cards.
anybody got a conformation on how big a microsd card we can go, that wont cause issues.
i was looking @ this card in the OP, but now im double thinking.

If you mean the 32gb your gonna have to search cuz I've seen very few. Don't remember what brand, most that are 32 gb I've seen are class2. I have a class 10 8gb here and it runs slower in my phone than my class 6 does.Sorry I can't give you more info.My class 10 is a Patriot
I bought the wintech 16 gig card back in january and 15 days later I woke up and my phone said the sd card was not formatted. Both windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 only saw the card as 1 gig but neither could format it nor create new partition tables. I lost all the data but luckily had a semi recent backup on my computer. RMA'ed it back to newegg and got a 16 gig class 6 card from a more reliable manufacturer.

[Q] MicroSD Question

Just picked up my NC at Best Buy about and hour ago. I have it at home charging and I'm going to go get a couple of MicroSD cards.
Should I go for the Class 10, or is Class 4/6 fast enough?
Unless your running something from the SD card then I'd recomend at least a class 6, you'll get around 11mb/s writing time, otherwise both the ROMs for the nook (Honeycomb & Nookie Froyo) both support installation to the emmc, you can just flash them to your system with Clockwork Recovery.
tldr; if you can find a class 6 or higher for cheap (I got an 8gb class 6 for $12 off amazon) get it, if not you'll be fine with anything truly now.
I am currently using a Class 4 8gb, and have no trouble running apps or even Froyo off the SD card,
Basically if you are just using the SD for apps or holding data, anything should work i would recommend at least class 4 or better, if you are going to be running the a custom rom off the SD while some class4 will work well. I would still recommend class 6 or class 10, Faster is always better.
Posting this from my new NC!
I stopped by Frys Electronics after dinner and picked up two Patriot 8GB Class 10 MicroSD cards. Getting to know the Nook a little before I root and start with the custom ROMs. Gonna load Froyo on one card and Honeycomb on the other so I can try out both flavors and see which one I like better.

[Q] I'm buying a Nook, what else do i need?

I'm buying a nook color as a quick entry into the world of tablets. I plan on using it for reading on the bus etc. But I'm also interested in rooting so I can customize it as well. So I'm planning to dual boot CM7 from the SD card but leave it stock otherwise. With that in mind, what do I need to purchase as a first time Nook buyer interested in modding?
Here's my list:
- Nook Color (of course)
- Aegis Series Enclosure System
- rooCASE (would the nook fit in cases like these with the body armor on?)
- Transcend 8 GB microSDHC Class 6 (read that the class is important when modifying)
- Kingston Flash Memory Reader (to read/write to the SD card)
if your flashing to the emmc class isnt as important, ive been using a plain old class 2 from wallyworld for about a month with no issues.
I have a Sandisk 8GB class 2 form walmart which works fine since I installed the ROM on EMMC.
The speed of the memory card can be a factor with things like video playback, transferring data too and from, etc. Honestly, I would recommend just getting a class 10. The price difference is so nominal that you may as well get something with a little speed. Also, a 16gb isn't much more than an 8gb. So my recommendation...16gb class 10. Something I'm picking up today myself to replace my 8gb class 6 card.
16GB Class 10 for $27.99
16GB Class 6 for $29.99
8GB Class 10 for $19.75
8GB Class 6 for $15.50
I thought about that, but the reviews for larger cards weren't that good so I suck with the 8GB.
The bigger issue is, should I buy it now or wait for B&N announcement later this month?
1) The announcement from B&N about a new Nook on the 24th didn't mention if it was color or not; personally, I'm betting on an update to the original, since the color's only been out for 6 months.
2) Please please *PLEASE* heed my advice on this - if you're planning on running off the μSD card, do NOT buy a class 6 or class 10 card unless you've seen small-block write speed benchmarks. Card Class refers to large-block, sequential R/W speeds, which is good when you're transferring big files on and off of the card, but doesn't factor in quick access or small R/W like you need when you're running an OS from it. I bought a Kingston 8GB class 6 the same day as my NC, 10 days ago, and I almost got to the point of wanting to return the device because of how disappointed I was in it. Then I found this thread -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633
and learned about the various card speed tests. I switched to a Sandisk 16GB class 4, and it was like a whole new device. I couldn't be happier with it now.
So, yeah, this is seriously important - read through that thread. And if you live near a RadioShack, they're running a 50% off sale on the good Sandisk cards for the rest of the week.

Strongly agree with this. I got the Transcend C6/8Gb, and had a huge amount of problems (forced closes, and erratic launcher behavior) when running cm7 off of the SD that have completely disappeared since switching to the Sandisk C4/8GB on sale at the Shack. Some radioshacks seem to carry the C2 cards, and some the C4 cards. They are the same price, so it might be worth checking out a few stores if there are several in your area.
If you are just using this as a normal SD card and will be running CM7, froyo, nooter, whatever off of the emmc, then the Transcend is perfectly fine.

Also strongly agree about SD cards. I just bought NC, used a PNY 4gb class 4 to boot off CM7 and it worked but not well, just like hoteladriano - forced closes, erratic behavoir. Will try again with the recommended Sandisks.
I've been using a Patriot 8GB class 10 for a month or so without any problems. Must have gotten lucky. Bought mine at Newegg after being told that a lot of the SD cards at Amazon are fakes, for whatever that's worth.
I"m using a 16 gig class 2 with no issues
I'm using a C6 8 GB Transcend. Saw lots of people rave about them. I'm running the Phiremod/Honeycomb dualboot and see pretty good success with it. Certain apps don't work right and cause force closes (Android Comic Viewer, Pulse) and once those crash I need to reboot to get everything work again. Other than that, its worked fine for me.
That being said, I would agree with everyone here that the Sandisk is your best bet. I may run out to radioshack tomorrow to grab myself another card, just to see how improved my experience would be!

After reading what you suggested and hearing from others I think I'll take your advice. Question is, is it the lower the class the better the performance when running an OS? I'm look at a SanDisk 16 GB Class 2. What do you think?
If I recall, from everything I've read a class 2 Sandisk should be okay, but a class 4 Sandisk would be ideal. If you try radioshack, look through the cards to find a class 4 one. They're not very careful, so they mix the class 2 and class 4 together.

This.
I have a 16gb Sansisk uSD class 2 and everything is good. No FC with apps installed on uSD. I don't store movies on it because I can stream it with CifsManagers and MoboPlayer. I recommend 16gb over 8gb. A lot of games required extra downloads which can range up to 100MB+. Backups can take up space as well.

That ends up really generally being true, because the small-block write speed is precisely what's sacrificed to get better large-block speed, but things can vary so much that I'd stick with either something that's been tested or something from a store with a good return policy.
Without extra details or benchmarks, I would buy a class 2 before I bought a 6 or 10.

Yeah, this thread schooled me. I bought a Patriot class 10 card 16gb and OMFG the speed was dismal. It's going back and I think I'm going to order a cheaper Sandisk class 2 for close to half the cost.

Read the linked thread and you'll learn all you need to know. It's the small-block random writes that are important for running an OS, and while it's generally poor in higher-class cards, it varies considerably between models at the class 2/4 level. Also, be sure you're not buying from Joe Blow in Beijing--there are a lot of counterfeit cards out there.

I have the Aegis case for Nook Color, and it's awesome. I've never taken mine off as you have access to all ports including the SD slot, and I've heard that repeatedly taking it off and putting it on again stretches it out and results in a poorer fit. Unfortunately, I bought an Aalto case from B&N thinking it would fit with the Aegis still on, and it doesn't. I don't know about the rooCases, but I've been told that the Rocketfish "Case for Most eReaders" will fit the NC inside the Aegis case, and have ordered one from ebay for $6.99 after shipping.
It's been well covered in general, and you should read the SD card thread everyone's mentioning, but in particular, if you're booting from SD, buy a SanDisk card with a good general rep for fast random small-block writes, then benchmark it yourself with CrystalDiskMark before using it.

[Q] max size sd card using cm10.1

Hi
Ok reading over and over and have not seen this one asked.
If I use cm10.1.3 can I use a larger sd card say 64g or can it only still use a 32g? Also what specs of card do I need over my head since I never use sd cards for anything. This is the hd+

You can use any size you want, even 64GB. The best SD to use with the HD+ is a SanDisk class 4.

Yes, there is a reason. Some have reported i/o errors with class 10. But some work ok. But I don't think you can get 64GB in class 4, so you may want to try it. But be warned the 64GB will be mounted as ext_sdcard so is not very useful. All of your apps will use internal storage by default unless you use my swap from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature.

You're right, I should have thought to do a quick search for error class 10 and I would have seen a slew of reports. I don't want to risk it so I went ahead and ordered a 32 GB class 4 microSDHC. Thank you again for your advice!
I've been using a Kingston 64GB class10 for almost a year without any issue.
It got it for my original TF101 then moved to the Nook HD+ (formatted it to FAT32 from the start).
I use it mainly for movies, ROMs, TWRP backups.
I actually have many class10, class6 cards from many vendors (many Kingston)... never a problem.
I also use Sandisk 64GB without any problem. I have pics and mp3s in my sd card. No apps.

[Q] what brand / speed uSD card should I be using for SD boot ROM

in 2011, Everybody was using Class 2 / Class 4 Sandisk Cards for their Nook Colors for SD Run ROM, I've used Transcend and older SD card successfully in my Nook Color.
I am going to be experimenting again with hacking the Device after I've got up to speed in reading alot of these thread topics. I read somewhere a reference to the " OLD Sandisk SD cards " as the best, and noticed all the advertising for current Sandisk SD cards have " made in china " stamped on em.
So, what is the current recommended brand / type of uSD card being used successfully today to Run android from. Can I go to Best Buy / Radio Shack and pick up a China made Sandisk Class 4 card and be good to go?? Or do I need one of the high speed rated cards I'm seeing out there?
I need a new uSD card before I get moving.
Thanks
