Case with plug extension? - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hi I am looking for a case that will plug into the microusb and provide an alternate port. The port being the weakness on every mobile device by plugging/unplugging all the time. Ive lost more than 1 phone this way. i just want to preserve the life of my Nexus. I dont mind if it increases the length overall. Has anyone heard of such a thing?

Here is how I solved it, I have:
1. Asus Nexus 7 Dock
2. Sena Ultraslim pouch
So if I need to charge, it easy to remove the tablet from it, as for transferring files, I use wifi or Google Drive, simple as that.

Maybe I'm lucky, I've never broken a charging socket on a phone....but...the idea of a socket extension on a case is a great one. I've had to 'mod' a few charger plugs to get them to fit into the space left by case manufacturers around the socket.

do you mean something like the battery pack cases for phones cause I have never seen one for any tablet. You could get an otg cable and mod a case to hold it in place to do what you want I believe.

Yeah I've thought about doing that but was hoping for something more professional. Also I use a $35 seido case (already broke 2 N7's so I need the heavy case), would have to buy a second one to extend it to make the mod, with a good chance of doing a bad job of it and wasting $70.

I still don't get it, according to Wikipedia, micro USB port, can handle like 10000 cycles of connect/disconnect, and will be fine..so how do you destroy them?
quote:
"The newer Micro-USB receptacles are designed for up to 10,000 cycles of insertion and removal between the receptacle and plug, compared to 1,500 for the standard USB and 5,000 for the Mini-USB receptacle. This is accomplished by adding a locking device and by moving the leaf-spring connector from the jack to the plug, so that the most-stressed part is on the cable side of the connection. This change was made so that the connector on the less expensive cable would bear the most wear instead of the more expensive micro-USB device"

My HTC Thunderbolt disagrees. Ive been having to swap the battery 3 times a day for the past year, using external chargers. For a while I could still connect to PC with a usb cable, not to charge but for file transfers, but now I can't do that either.

[Q] dealextreme dock and battery for dell streak 5?

Anyone have these 2?
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-ac...able-car-charger-for-dell-mini-5-streak-59493
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/replac...1530mah-lithium-battery-for-dell-mini-5-80156
How are they? I see another battery that is priced at $9.50, but it looks like its the exact same battery... for a higher price.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/3-7v-1530mah-rechargeable-battery-for-dell-mini-5-streak-59091
I don't have the charging dock so can't comment on it.
These two batteries look the same to me except the $5.80 one seems to have a yelloew sticker with a wholesales vendor's name on it. The $9.50 one shows an extra "Built-in safety and protective circuitries" feature in the description.
I have a different pack, SKU 57931, from them. It comes with a bettery but I am not sure if it is a $5.80 or $9.50 one since there is no serial # on the battery. After initial full charge, Streak uses about 25% per day. I have very mininum phone usage (few quick calls/texting/WiFi. I don't have 3G service).
Even it is a $5.80 one, it seems to be working fine for me.
BTW, it took a while to finally receive the shipment in US. (about 4 weeks after placing the order).
I have the charging dock. It works very well I use the streak as a bedside digital clock
at night while it charges. Good value as mine came with all cables and power supply.

Make sure you buy 3 .
I dont own either, but I do have a usb cable coming from them in a few days, as well as a zune cable amongst other things. Hope it isn't broken.
I got a USB cable from DX and it is very problematic - it causes the Streak to crash and/or drop its connection. I have a number of cables, both original Dell ones and aftermarket ones purchased from eBay, and none of these exhibit the same issue.
I have bought a LOT of stuff from DX over the years, and it is extremely rare to have any problems, so I guess that I just got a bad cable, but you may want to test yours carefully when you get it just in case there is a bad batch out there.

Can you explain what you mean? I'm not too sure what your saying... it... causes the streak to freeze?! That's so strange!

When I have the Streak connected to my PC (or to a USB power outlet) using the cable that I got from DealExtreme, it frequently reboots and/or loses the connection to the PC. This only happens with the DX cable (I have 4 genuine Dell cables plus 2 bought from eBay and none of them have this problem).
There is obviously a loose connection or short inside the cable.
As I said, I don't want to put anybody off from buying from DX, as I find it's very rare to have any problems with their items.
any problem with this dock and battery so far?

Took a few weeks to get it but I finally got it. The dock is great, the only complaints I have is that the AC charger is only EU (thankfully I had my AC adapter from another Mini-USB device), the car charger can be easily disassembled because it's not glued, and you can't charge a spare battery AND your phone at the same time through AC power alone... if you want to charge them both at the same time, you must also use the USB adapter and connect the dock to a computer. There is an LED that changes from Red to Blue, depending on what it is charging at that moment. If you have your phone docked, it will charge the phone and the light will be Blue. If you insert a spare battery to be charged, the light will change to Red and only the spare battery will be charging.
I've been using the $5 spare battery for 3 days now and I must say it's as good as the original. Let's just see if it holds a charge after a few months!

The answer to this is no, the Streak with Otterbox is too thick for it.

Is my charger junk?

I brought my 7 home Saturday at 33% charge, plopped down on the couch, plugged it in and started playing. The battery level slowly dropped. The charger WILL charge it, but only when it's idle and it seems slow as hell. I figured a 2A charger would have my Razr Maxx full in no time but in an hour it went from 40% to 50%. After completely draining my Nexus 7 I plugged it in and charged it at idle for 12 hours. When I looked this morning it was at 67%.
I'm assuming the charger is bad. I also have a different cable plugged in to it which I suppose I should try replacing first. But if this thing actually charges that slow I'd rather find out now than keep searching for a problem that doesn't exist.
Is it possible that your cable is an older one and can't handle the higher electric current? I read that this happened to people who used older cable to charge the Retina iPad as well. Don't know whether this is the reason.
The cable is one I got on ebay for $1. Entirely possible that's the problem. I'll try the OE cable tonight.
You should always use what the device shipped with. More than likely, that's the problem.

Well, I can't very well "use" a 3' usb cable. I hope you don't think you should buy $100 hdmi cables, too.
Nope, but most devices don't ship with HDMI cables. I've bought cheap cables online, but if my phone or tablet came with one I surely use it.
I've heard and seen people messing up their devices or having weird problems (like yours) from using a different cable and/or charger plug. So I always use what it came with. So many little nuances .

I definitely need a longer cable. Guess I'll just have to pony up for quality cables instead of these ones that ship from China.

Non-sense. Go to monoprice.com and you can get plenty of dirt-cheap cables that get the job done just fine. It sounds like you're currently using a 2-pin micro-USB instead of a 4-pin. The extra 2 pins are for data, as well as high-power charging for devices that pull more than USB's standard 500mA.

Doh.. I'll start by pulling out the multimeter when I get home. Or maybe just looking before I even bother with that.

All in one mhl adapter

Since there are a lot of knockoffs on ebay I thought I would come in with a pleasant surprise. I bought http://item.mobileweb.ebay.ca/viewitem?itemId=130783773578this expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised at how well it works on my Note2. The only thing is the usb cord is not very long and you have to have it plugged in so that the phone is charging for it to work, but for the price is awesome.
I ordered one just like that off of ebay as well and it works for me too. They all have to be plugged in to power to work.
Well I learned something today. This is my 2nd Samsung phone and first experience with mhl adapter and didnt know it HAD to be plugged in. Thanks.
Thanks for the link.. at $12 it's a cheap enough gamble.
Can you detail where the length is lacking? Easy enough to add an extension for length?

That's what's posted up a bit and mine wouldn't work without power source. Learning curve lol.
One thing I did notice is that even with it plugged in and "charging" after a couple hours on watching you tube the phone dropped from 80% to 72% battery so not really sure if it's charging or if it just takes that much power. I was using the wall charger that came with my phone so it should have been getting the 2 amps.
I think this mhl cord probably only allows 500ma. Something I use to counter that is this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nkahoang.screenstandby
It allows you to turn off your screen, because even on the lowest brightness it still eats up the battery.
Good thread. There are a couple on amazon like this as well
For those of you who shop at monoprice, their 11 to 5 pin adaptor is back in stock and they even bundle it with an mhl adaptor.
I can't link to it as I just registered here, but it's under accessories>cell phones

Smart Dock Alternative???

smart dock knockoff.....may be worth a shot because the samsung one is too dang expensive....this one also looks like it will accept cases unlike the stock one....i may have to give it a shot after payday http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMART-MULTI...ories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item5657f3c0a2
Since in US it will still going to cost more than $50, I will wait for some reviews before getting one. Good find for sure
the official dock does accept some cases.
I've had it working with the official flip cover, and with the official protective cover +.
I had seen this exact dock from a different seller on ebay a couple of days ago. I was about to buy it, but then I noticed that it said in the fine print that the mhl and otg connections can't be used at the same time. I'll see if I can find the link again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that the oem dock can do both simultaneously?

Very good in hdmi e 80 inch projector ... :good:
I got one from Amazon for 2t bucks. Compared it to a real one . It's got all most the same circuitry.
The chips that process the otg and charge curent signal are a lot different. But mine works it will charge while I runmy powered usb hub with my external harddrive. In the one I have you only get one otg option at a time. Like you can do one sd card or one usb thing or the hdmi out but not all at the same time so your going to need a usb hub thats got it's own power supply.
And like all Chinese knock offs you never know witch of there military owned slave labour operated plants actually built it . so there's a good chance you wind up with a better one.or one that isn't as good. Or maybe even one that doesn't work at all. They're all in the same case so its hit or miss.
My cheap knock off doc failed as off last night its no longer recognized as a doc. It shows up only the hdmi and charger.you can always charge and use hdmi out. But otg mod reverse the usb port so you can't charge.
Someone know a gadget that allows both usages? HDMI + USB at same time?

Newegg is carrying these now under the brand name "Baaqii".
It's $34 ($28 when on sale) but it also states, way down at the bottom, cannot do both OTG functions at same time.

I'm thinking That to get otg charging theres got to be a switch in the software someplace that lets you turn offotg mod and turn in back on really fast. Like pules on off on off on off constantly in the kernel. But I'm also thinking that there might not be a switch like that in our phones.
I'm thinking that the chips in a smart doc probably do that. So that leaves us not much choice. We either got to buy a doc. Find that switch or
Get a wireless charger.
I found a port of the famous faux kernel. I tried it with the 5 dollar add on app. It had no effect on otg charging a note 2.
I'm thinking the best cheap solution is one of the inductive charger sets. Or possibly putting a 555 timing circuit into a usd cable.
But a $35 1 amp wireless universal charge plat and coil would probably be the easiest way to go.

Micro USB port durability

Hi All
I have this OCD that I'm going to damage the Micro USB port when inserting or removing the cable. Is the port durable? And should I just not worry about it?
In note 4, it will get loose and you need you find position that charges the phone.
Well using the app "phone info" on my rooted note 4 I can tell you I have connected a usb lead 712 times in the last year and I have no looseness or connection issues whatsoever.
No the most scientific of responses I know, but hopefully it will give you an idea.

I don't know I've abused the port a lot, plugging in at night, moving it around quite carelessly too, then I also flooded it with water once accidentally, after a few hours of weirdness it still works great, not loose or anything

If you've got a dodgy connection, replace the lead. They're cheap (much cheaper than trying to replace the socket)
My experience is that most micro USB leads are good for a couple of hundred connections or so.
Thanks to everyone who has replied. I really appreciate it soo much. I now will charge my phone worry free.
I charge wireless to save a little wear and tear on mine.

It is much better than Mini-USB standard, which usually get broken in mid-long use.
My Micro-USB port is working very fine in my Note 4. Charged around 800 times.
almost 2000 count on my phone
and still work fine
800 times, no problem.
FYI, the MicroUSB standard states a design lifetime of 10000 cycles. The weakest parts are on the cable side.
