Build Quality. - Sprint HTC One (M7)

As always HTC build quality is shifty. This from my personal experience with many HTC models dating all the way back to the Mogul. Scraped the skin off my finger and now it's embedded in this phone. My DNA will be stuck inside this phone for it's whole life. Make sure to give your phones a thorough once over. You can see the gap on the left side. Anything could just roll in there. No, Samsung did not hire me.

Yeah, I don't have that problem.

That makes for a good painter's putty.
Picking my phone up in person, so I will most definitely inspect for gaps before taking it home!

The aluminum does stick out farther than the plastic on both sides. Makes a great scraper tool. Lol. I don't mind that as much, just the gap area.

I love how you say as always. I have had 6 different htc models going back to the hero and never had anything wrong with htc's build quality. They make one of the best phones on the market if not the best.

So take it back friday and get a replacement. Theres an instore warranty good for 14 days. I really dont see why all of you are *****ing about this when its such an easy fix.

I wouldn't say "Shifty" build quality.. but I would say inconsistent. My 1st EVO 4G was built like a brick house with no "real" issues (the B-spot.)
But my girlfriends needed replaced due to the bottom left corner of the screen pulling away from the body. Which was replaced 4 TIMES because each replacement had the exact same issue.
Then, Evo 3D, I had to replace that because the touchscreen was going out, which I've heard is a major issue with the 3D line.
I'm hoping the One has better part quality.

LOL. One does have quite the audacity to post negative comments about HTC, yet have a link in the same post all about Samsung. The question I'd like to know is how he got his phone. I'm guessing he is not an HTC VIP, though I could be wrong.

I still have the HTC Hero and its been used and abused. Its still in great shape and i never had a cover on it. But I am extremely pissed off at the HTC Evo 3D build that I am currently using (and will finally be done with in a few more hours when i pick up my HTC One).
The glue or adhesive that HTC used to put the phone together is horrible. I had metal front cover falling off the phone and the red frame on the camera portion is halfway falling off. For some odd reason when the metal portion started to peel off the front cover the phone would act crazy and it would always have the phantom button presses making the phone unusable. To fix the problem I had to super glue what I could down but now other sections are falling off that have been attached from HTC's adhesive.
I can't say that I am not worried but I really REALLY hope that any of these pieces are not sealed with any adhesive.

I made some modifications to my HTC Incredible S! I bought it off Kijiji at an unbelievable price and wasn't expecting much, the black bezel was terribly scratched and you could see the metal in many spots. I decided to go to work and sanded the metal edges down, and IMO it looks great! Hoping to get your opinions, I'm a newer XDA member. Oddly enough, just grabbed some fine sandpaper and sanded it down by hand, took about an hour along the edges! Because its an HTC phone the paint was very think and took a lot of hard work to get it off, but eventually it did! Just removed the plastic battery cover and went at it! Much better looking than before, it was covered in scratches along the edges before
You must be pretty courageous to just use sand paper

I'd love a back cover! LOL I wouldn't say courageous, I could already see part of the metal from the paint chipped and it was so dinged up and for the price I paid I thought eh, I'll take a risk! Turned out great! I bought it for $75 and sold it just earlier today for $275! Nice profit for an hours work! Going to use that money towards my HTC One X fund, going to miss the phone, out of all my phones it had the best screen imo between iPhone 4S(yes, the demons!) LG Optimus 3D and Samsung Galaxy Infuse.
Hopefully the bugs in the One X get sorted out. Can't wait to get my hands on an unlocked quad core beast!

How should I sand it?
Greetings all,
Another newbie here. My question is to the people who sanded. Would you do it differently next time? Should I take the casing off the phone? Should I attempt it, never having done it before? The other option is tape it up and sand cautiously. I was just about to just order replacement parts online when I found this thread.
If anyone would like to weigh in, I'd really appreciate any advice you have to offer. I think it's best that I wait to make my decision.
I offer so much gratitude to anyone who can help.
Jennan
Lol I still havnt finished it but I think it looks cool partially sanded. You just have to invest time and get a few different kinds of sand paper. The finer the grit the easier the time I found. That being said its halfway done with 3 hours of sanding.

Hi there! Please welcome another newbie...
Anyway, man the sand papered Incredible S looks awesome Thinking of doing it
Just one question! Did you used some kind of alcoholic silver pen to paint the microphone right above the HTC logo?
Thanks in advance!

Is HTC One really slippery in hand?

Hi guys,
I could not find a demo device from my local telco stores and based on what you have discovered, is HTC one silver or black version very slippery when holding it with one hand?
I used to have HTC one s grey version which had full aluminum unibody but that beauty was very slippery to a degree that I would drop it when pulling it from my jeans. So how is HTC one doing compared to one s grey version?
Thanks!!

I have seen the dummy black one in 3 store, it was not very slippery but the back was very smooth indeed. I am more concerning the silver one which I would probably get, just really want to know if that is the same as black one or more slippery cos I it seems like they are different finish.
Really want to preorder but cannot decide yet before I know how slippery one would be. Thanks for any help!!

Ohh sorry but I couldn't help you there. I didn't even get the chance to see the device other than on the internet. But thanks! I am buying the black one and glad it's great.
I've only held one briefly, but I did find it very difficult to keep hold of. It's the shape that's the problem - it's too thin at the sides, and because it's all curves and no edges there's nothing to get a grip on.

Silver. I've not encountered a black one, but as I said it was the shape that was the problem, not the texture of the surface, and the black one is the same shape.
Something I should have said earlier is that I don't hold phones the way normal people do. I hold the phone in my left hand and operate it with my right index finger, rather than holding it in my right hand and using my right thumb. That may make a difference.

I tried the dummy black the other day, given the fact that I have galaxy s3 at the moment, I have to say I felt harder/sharper edge than holding a s3.
Of course it could be all because the quality of dummy is no comparison to the real thing, that's why I am planning to go to Stratford westfield to try my luck if I could have my hands on a demo device today. will report back later.

Went to Stratford Westfield today, haha super happy got my hand on a silver demo device from 3 store. It felt much better than dummy phone I have to say, the edges are much smoother and surprisingly not as slippery as one s grey version!! I think this is because One is thicker than One s so it gives you better grip.
Overall very very very happy about the silver colour, may just preorder one tomorrow!!

I have held three different devices now, I have not felt any slipperiness
It's similar to the Desire HD .. a bit slippery but not too bad!
I would recommend getting a nice case for it

HTC One Drop Test (Accidental)

Ok, so pretty much just as I did with my iPhone 5. Had the HTC One since last Friday, I have protected it so well however.....
I was just about to get out of the car and slotted the phone into my shirt pocket under my jumper, got out of the car and slap, the phone obviously wasn't in my pocket, hence it was on the pavement. Soooo gutted right now.
Damage to 3 corners of the back case, front is perfect luckily and the screen is undamaged at all. All works perfectly, however I am sooo annoyed with myself.
Will post a picture up in a bit, I will sell this on now and get another I think. Any idea of what it's worth? Sim Free bought from Phones 4U.

I don't think the back of the one will scratch easily. The back was the least damaged from that fall just a tiny nick that was all.

tha was early. sorry bout your phone man. that a real pain with unibodies when dropped. i gues that why samsung sticks with the plastic bodies.
Btw, we see the advantage and disadvantage between Iphone 5 and Htc One here.
Iphone 5 gets stratched very easily. HTC One does not.
But on the other hand, they take dropping better than HTC One, both will suffer stratches but HTC One is more fragile that Iphone 5 it seems.

Well based on what I have seen I could easily say that nokia n8 still has the best anodized case to date. That thing is just so hard you can't even scratch it easily even if you hammer it with a knife.

Htc One build quality

Hello,
Been following this thread for a couple months now, almost bought the xz, but seeing both took their sweet time to launch and one's finally available...
So just returned from a mall, seen it in 2 stores, live.
It looks really nice just as pictured by everybody in these forums. The screen looks amazing, very sharp, cannot compare to anything else. Sound thru loudspeakers best I heard in a phone.
However..
The built quality seemed to lack.. Alot.
The metal parts didn't seem to be aligned properly to the point where visually they were protruding out; the corners felt rugged, especially where the metal will stick out. There were minor gaps, albeit too visible on both models.
Now, surely I have heard about these possible issues. Wasn't too worried before as consider myself less picky about things in general. But after seeing the store model, I am a little worried. I know I get to bring it back if not happy my question is how the store demo version compares to the actual thing? Aren't the demo units supposed to be better, at least in build quality? One thing I am sure of, will carefully inspect it in store.
As an aside, all my phones past 10 years bought online: I wouldn't take the same chance with one whatever return policy.
Sent from a pizza..
I had a few issues with build quality on my first few handsets , rough edges etc and then on my last one (which didn't suffer from the capptive button problem) I decided to just take care of the rough edges myself and used a bit of 2000 wet and dry sand paper on the polished edges and white band, now have a perfect handset

Wow, hard to believe that! In any case I don't think I would do it.
Just went to similar other threads mostly concerned with stuck or dead pixels.

Pixel issues are going to increase as pixel density has more than doubled over the last few years. No way around it. We also need to remember that it is in no way HTC fault and that every single phone manufacturer has similar failure rates.
From what a fair few people on here have said, the most recent builds are fixing these issues.
I myself have a model with very minor build quality issues but it's not enough to make me want to get a replacement or switch to another phone.
The phones so good that these minor issues can be overlooked, by me at least.

I myself have a model with very minor build quality issues but it's not enough to make me want to get a replacement or switch to another phone.
The phones so good that these minor issues can be overlooked, by me at least.

Same here. Very minor issues here too. The headphone input (and sim tray) looks to be deburred by hand (and a bad job at that, I got a scalpel to mine to clean it up)
But other than that I'm happy.

Wow, hard to believe that! In any case I don't think I would do it.
Just went to similar other threads mostly concerned with stuck or dead pixels.
Will bite the bullet tomorrow and will try to inspect it in store, hope for the perfect one..

No joke, I used a bit of 2000 wet and dry just take some of the rough edges and what seemed like glue or something of the white band. It now feels silky smooth .......then I put it in a case and don't feel it anyway lol!
My ocd is moving to new extremes I think lol

Got my One today and it's perfect or very near..
Checked a little bit on the issues I seen or heard of before, mechanically it's almost perfect, alignment and all, no dead or stuck pixels, call quality seems alright, sound recording and playback.
The only issue if I may say so, on maximum volume there's a bit of distortion on loudspeakers.
I will get to play more with it this weekend, can hardly wait, but so far it seems like a nice replacement for my sgs2.

Yeah I'm usually not very anal about those kinds of things but I must admit that the headphone jack is pretty bad. Like mine is halfway on the aluminum casing almost. It's not in the center of the plastic between the aluminum at all like the power button. Is this normal?

Yes headphone jack is in normal position.. my Inspire was like that as well. Not aesthetically pleasing, but am sure it has to do with placement of items inside the phone.

What about the part where if you move the notification bar down you can feel the screen is not flush with the phone. Like the screen is risen. On the bottom there is no issue. Is this a common "problem"?

I got that too, but decided it doesn't bother me that much. However I am going to exchange it for another with better power button, mine is way too recessed.

cracked screen !!!

Has anyone else had problems with a their screen being easily damaged , just knocked the phone off a chair with a drop of about 1 foot to a wooden floor and have popped the back case and cracked the screen !!!!!!:crying:
Wow the build quality seems to be really disappointing, but I guess you cant expect much from a 350$ device
Wow sucks to be you ! That's some bad luck, had my n4 since launch not a scratch or crack.
I doubt it has a weak screen more a badly angled small fall, lesson here is get a case asap and be careful.
I know the feeling dropped my girls nexus s one week after she got it,she was irate !

Noway.. The lesson here is not to be a complete numpty and drop your 1 day old phone.

I rock all my devices without cases.
I'm OCD to the extent that I don't put them down on tables without a napkin or cloth of some sort first (yes...THAT OCD).
I could resell everything I've ever had as "mint" if I chose to.
Cases suck. Be an adult and treat your $X00 device with some respect.

This. I have NEVER cracked a screen on any of my smartphones, not because they all had good build quality but because i take care with my gadgets. For example before i got my case for the Nexus 4 i would not put it down on a table without a cloth underneath.
Sorry to hear that thats crazy is it too much to ask if u can pay a photo of it?

Simple physics guys..
Glass will shatter if it hits the ground hard. Don´t forget you don´t own a simple phone anymore like a Nokia 3310 Your smartphones are actually very sensitive mini computers.
Gorilla Glass may prevent the glass from becoming scratched very easy, it will never prevent it from breaking though.
This is hard to read. I have an S2 that's I've dropped many times from hip level, no case, and the screen has yet to crack.
I definitely bought a case for this one because no matter how careful I am I can't keep my phone from dropping.

samsung continues to pay good, huh op? "screen being easily damaged" sounds very legit; when i broke my phone screen the first idea is write "easily damaged" (note the "easily", lol) on one of the most famous developers forum where i registered with 0 post. Yeah, good try.

My point was that the S2 has a gorilla glass and it took many falls without cracking. T barely has any scratches after 2 years too.

Now random cracking is an issue, but even 2 inch toughened (laminated) glass will break if it hits the ground along its edges/corners because the stress distribution is concentrated there.

I obviously agree with your first statement but why do people always have to bring up the iPhone to compare things to. How about an HTC One, or a Samsung Galaxy S4 or an LG G2? People think if an iPhone does something then we can just accept it. I would expect an iPhone to break. It is built by underage kids and is known to get damaged easily regardless of what Apple tells us.

Budddy, Gorilla Glass doesn't make your phone shatter-proof, it's just protecting your phone against scratches.
Sorry to hear that dude.

The only reason I brought up the iPhone is due to the "popular opinion" that it has the best build quality.. Not that it's my opinion though

I find it really disrespectful when people talk down on people that drop their phones and say they should be more careful.
The reality is we are all human! human's make mistakes! Some make less than others, but we all make mistakes. If you have never tripped, said the wrong thing, accidentally dropped something, well then congratulations you are a perfect person! But no need to put down others.
