[Q] Problems with HTC One and 2013 flagships - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a difficult choice to make between choosing the three 2013 1080p flagship smartphones...
HTC One:
-subpar camera
-4.7" screen but with thick bezels so size of the phone is actually same as the 5"ers (The curved back makes it easy to
handle one handed and thumb can reach other side of screen very easily so I think a 5" would be nice)
-removed the 3rd softkey and put a HTC logo there??? (wtf)
Xperia Z/ZL:
-bad screen, bad screen viewing angles
-horrible battery life, but that comes from the bad screen thats too power hungry probably...
Galaxy S4:
-Pentile Screen, Nuff said
I really wish there was a 1080p 5" compact (ZL/S4) RGB stripe screen flagship with good battery life (8+ hours screen on, video/browsing)
If the xperia had 8 hours instead of 5.5 hours i'd probably get that despite bad viewing angle and contrast ratio of the TFT screen...
I think I am just going to get the HTC One, what do you guys think?
I know this is the HTC One forum, but some unbiased opinions would be cool,
Im still scared if i buy one i'll get a unit with the gaps problem some people are reporting...

Judging from your negatives, I'd say the SGS4 is your best bet. Pentile won't matter at 448 PPI, you just won't be able to see the difference.

8+ hrs screen on? Not gonna happen any time soon.

I remember my Galaxy S getting around 3 hours screen on and being amazed. People are never satisfied

Hm, I just can't seem to buy into the "naked eye cant see anything past x ppi"
Even if we cant see the pixels individually, it would still be sharper when u look at it wont it?

Hmm...check the reviews and battery tests? S4 and HTC One both have 10 hours video playback or browsing while xperia Z/ZL 5.5 hours...

ANY 1080p phone will be very sharp, I'm not saying you won't notice a difference between them. I'm just saying the difference is going to be in the type of panel used.
Amoled = blacks, vibrant
IPS = brightness, neutral colors
TFT = washed out, poor viewing angles, light bleeding on edges of screen
If it was up to me, the Sony Z would have no business being compared to the One and the S4.

I agree and feel the same about 2013 devices. Just stick with the note2 and see what the note3 brings.

Samsung switched to RGB stripe with the S2, but they decided to go back to pentile cross hatch bs with the s3 and now s4...
They realized that overall it wont really hurt their image that much since majority of users don't even know the full specs
of their own phone...
Overall they cut a lot of cost in manufacturing and profits skyrocket...
Sigh, there needs to be more competition, which will be good for consumers.....whenever a company dominates a market, consumers lose out =(
Samsung could have made the S4 Aluminum body and RGB stripe, which will give their company the image of a premium smartphone maker, but they dont need to because their profits will be a lot higher if they keep doing what they do...

by adding a question in your title, this should be in the q&a section.
but anyways
if your looking for battery life, the s4 has a better standby time.
But both devices are great. You decide on which device you want.

Well there's a thread that actually proves that over time, htc one could give 7hrs of screen time so there...

Why not wait a bit for what Google and Motorola are cooking? Based on your post, I can (ALMOST) see into the future and see that you will be complaining about one thing or another no matter which of these three devices you'll get. No offense intended, okay?
Larry Page did say that Motorola would be launching a phone with an "unadultered" Android experience, and people would start to not need to charge their devices every day, worry about kids spilling liquid on phones, and drop their phones without getting worried. And rumors say that the next Motorola phones (or probably just the X Phone) would have a camera based on the technology that Canon (or was it Nikon?) uses.

That might take until August though...=(
I wonder how the new pentile layout looks, instead of the RGBG in the S3, now the subpixel arrangement in the S4 has the green subpixels on a diagonal axis to the red and blue subpixels....hmmm

motorola will release tiny 4.3 inch phones . Even though i saw the petition on gsmarena. I like the 4.7-5 inch sizes. 5.5 is fairly large, but that should be the limit on phones. Hopefully phones that are being released at the end of this year and next year will improve on software optimizations (also KLP) on making android super super smooth, and manufacturers working on their skins making it optimized. Even though sense is somewhat heavy, its good on battery life.
Being on stock android is boring imo.
This design on the htc one is phenomenal, hopefully next years htc will build upon this and hit every sweet spot.

Nexus 4 disappointment

I have to say that i opened my new nexus this morning with excitement. The build quality and style of the phone is great.
That being said as soon as i turned it on i was really disappointed with the screen quality. The colours look washed out like a cheap budget TV in a sun drenched room. Next to an S3 it cant even compare. Side by side comparison with an S3 leaves the nexus looking awful. I put phasebeam live wallpaper on both phones and there really isnt a challenge from the nexus. The blue corner on the nexus is nearly white the colours are so far off. I tried another live wallpaper called Magic Smoke 3D and the blue areas on the S3 are nearly white on the Nexus. Blacks are almost grey too its really poor. I know the OLED vs LCD debate but i think this is more an issue of a very good OLED vs a very poor LCD or at least very poorly calibrated LCD. The Auto brightness is so dim its also useless and i have to set it manually. Its so bad that its dimmer than my OLED which is insane.
Battery life is a real issue. i had nothing of note installed on the phone and went from 74% down to 0 in less than a half days use.
The loud speaker is tinny and sounds pretty bad and the ear speaker is sounding very odd compared to other phones i own.
Stock android has some nice points which i can appreciate but its lacking in other areas which arent easy to live with. No battery percent is a real stupid omission and i know you can mod the phone up but seriously not being able to dial a phone number directly from an email is pretty poor. took me a while to get the copy and paste working to do it.
Whilst a few things are Goolges fault i squarely lay the blame at LG since i saw the Optimus G and i thought the screen was terrible on that also and the other hardware issues are down to cost cutting and lack of care when it comes to colour calibration.
This phone is worth every penny at £280 and thats all its worth. Its nowhere near as good a deal as i believed before i got it in the post this morning. Its certainly not a £400-£500 Phone. Since LG is a screen company its a real shame they screwed this one up so bad.
Its going back to Google on monday and ill think ill wait for the S4.
Maybe try to calibrate it. Mine came out of the box looking good. After some calibration it is not far from the best screen I've used. Also in bright rooms and sun the screen rocks. Maybe you got unlucky?
Also I can get up to 6 hours of screen time usually around 4 though worth heavier use so I cannot relate to this at all

If you don't like it then just return it. This really isn't a difficult concept. However, for the price you paid you really can't argue about it.

Couldnt disagree more with the OP ,
but everyone's allowed an opinion .... I think the screen is fantastic and sharp, the S3 imo is oversaturated, and some professionals have said the colours are much truer to life than the S3s , and like @hewettBR said , you could calibrate it to pretty much do anything ya wanted ..
Im a little confused, did you not know what you were getting with stock android? its stock, bone, clean, if you dont like it maybe try a custom rom?
Also the battery life on my device has been fine, gets me through a days usage with 30% left and 3 hours of screen on time, no problem what so ever. also some custom kernels people have got 5-6 hours of screen on time
Just my 2 cents

I know about stock android but i never realised just how lacking stock android can be in areas. Whilst some complex stuff is included other simple stuff is missing. You really dont know whats missing until a feature that you might use every day on an S3 is just not there in Nexus. This isnt as much as a deal breaker as the screen though.
I really dont want true to life screen quality anyway. its a phone and not a window. I want the red green and blues to pop and amaze everytime i look. The contrast should be high and blacks should be dark. With my nexus i have Blue which is actually White! Black which is grey and washed out. I really think i must have a bad sample or maybe its because i have a comparison phone to put the screen against.

Totally agree with your answer, y asked a designer to choose which screen look better between the S3 and the Nexus 4, and she choose the nexus 4 because it has more realistic colors she said. I was a GSIII owner and I am not regreat about switching to the nexus 4.
Sorry about my english.
Just ordered mine last night. I too have an s3 right now.
I hope I'm not too disappointed.

I mean really....
As someone who had an S3, went to a N4, then went back to an S3 I noticed the following things after going back to the S3:
The S3's screen is nowhere near as sharp as the Nexus 4's. I never thought the difference between pentile and non pentile was big, but it is. Text is far clearer. Colours between the two are preference. I like the pop of the S3s screen.
The S3 is a slow phone. The Nexus 4 craps on it for UI speed.
The Nexus is a beautiful device. It feels really nice in the hand and feels very high end.
The Nexus battery life is rubbish. I do not understand how people are getting 5 hours of on screen time - maybe they have everything turned off. I like to have wifi, gps, BT, 3g all turned on all the time and the Nexus 4 would barely get me through a day. The S3 easily does it and also has the option of spare battery. Also when gaming on the Nexus the battery goes down a % a minute at least. I played sworcery for 20 mins and my battery had gone from 80 to 50something%!
The Nexus 4 gets HOT during demanding gaming. Like, really hot. Changing the kernel fixed this - I don't know how.
I also missed the swipe left/right to call/message from touchwiz.
Stock android quick toggles, whilst looking really good aren't useful at all. All they do is take you to the settings menu.
I think that on screen buttons are far nicer and the back button being on the LEFT is the right place.
Forgot to add - The main reason I switched back was because of the Camera. It is ASS! Just take a look at the photo thread on these very forums for proof. Also lacks burst mode which is a bit annoying. It also took longer to render HDRs and they weren't that great. A lot of people think it's good because they came from a Galaxy Nexus , which had a mid 2010 5MP shooter in it.
I was a s3 user but I do like the nexus 4 color
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I think the display is worse on the SGIII.
iPhone 5 for example uses Sharp IPS LCD panels and have won many tests against SGIII in terms of display quality and the Nexus 4 uses a newer and better display - though the IPS panel made by LG.
Or perhaps you just like oversaturated colors and the blueish tint that you get from OLED.

Interesting points, but yes the s3 definitely has better battery life than the nexus, unfortunately that is something the nexus isnt good at. But its the fastest android phone, maybe the optimus g as well? I dont know but the nexus is ridiculously fast. Im confident that future android updates will adress those battery issues. In the mean time there are great roms and kernels that give extra juice like franco's kernel or matrix kernel.
I also missed the swipe left/right to call/message from touchwiz.
I agree on the screen, washed out and viewing angles are horrible.

I agree on the sharp screen of the Nexus but thats LCD tech and any LCD with 300+ PPI gives that.
My S3 isnt slow though? i tend to use Omega Rom which is rapid. Its easily on par with nexus.
The 400 PPI S4 looks to be the phone for me that will give the sharp text
Dear soon-to-return-nexus-4-users,
You realize the Nexus phone, or any Nexus phone, runs Android WITHOUT any 3rd party skin/addon/UI/etc...?
Yes?
OK. Then Why you ***** about a certain feature exist in a certain 3rd party skin/addon/UI/etc... not available in plain Android?
Next, you should also realize that the pro of owning a Nexus phone is not only about getting updates faster, It's also about the development of Custom ROM/Kernels.
So if you buy a Nexus phone and expect to use it like S3 (i.e. without tinkering the device), you are buying it wrong and I do, REALLY do suggest you return it and go back to your TouchWiz phones.
Later.
it's true google calibration is a bit washed out and weak out of the box
but..
1) let the glue dry and screen burn in for a week or two
2) you can make the colours burn your eyes out with gamma control kernels if you want

You won't be able to tell the differences under normal usage conditions. Trust me.
And I can already forsee tons of website will use magnifiers to tell you how small the pixels are and how sharp things are.

Complete waste of phone battery and processing power IMO - why the **** would you want 400PPI when you can't even see the difference!
And no damn website would ever use 400PPI images - simply because they would be HUGE in size.

[Q] Help?

Honestly - I say wait.
Either way, we will know about the GS4 before the launch of the HTC One if I'm not mistaken.
As above, if you're not too sure, you're better off waiting for the s4 so you can test both out.
Also, please post any questions in Q&A from now on.
Depends. If you're like me who liked the HTC One on a design perspective then get it now. If you look on specs or features then better wait and decide.
I can make things Simplify its almost confirm that s4 will use 4.9 or 5" screen but dafinately never yet able to made phone using complete metal unibody Samsung is about 85% plastic, afaic I never pay premium price for plastic from now as off coz HTC increase the bar in terms of premium design I don't care at all if it look more or less similar that endless comparison will never end for me how I feel personally to it is more important
Another thing S4 will never have ultra pixel or similar innovation so quick as for now like on HTC one and duel speaker and irda remote and Zoe and complete unibody will surely differentiate HTC ONE from other
For me higher GHz, more mega pixel better benchmark larger screen, card slot or any type software which feature which can be easy to port across android devices and these things can't make phone better so even thought s4 equipped everything but not htc one's premium distinct feature like irda, metal body exact size, qulity cam, ois Zoe, duel and loudest sound
I see Z and One and withing 3 min I finalize on One coz Z got poor viewing angle slow interface, too big and can't take advantage of full 5 inch coz on screen is tricky to appear and dissolved some time and taking space
I suggest don't expect too high but suggest you 'ONE'

1. Yes you're right. But samsung will be adding little aluminum on the sides of galaxy s4.
2. Samsung will indeed never have ultrapixel as that is copyrighted by HTC. Plus on my own preferences I would still prefer megapixels over this unless they balance this out. And also! Samsung was the first with the IR Remote so don't say that HTC was first. Even Xperia Z/ZL introduced them earlier than HTC.
3. Just to be fair enough with samsung. Samsung will have irda, S-Pen, multi window.
4. Z does not have poor viewing angles. It's pretty obvious you never seen it personally I could say it's only average but no not poor. And yeah the UI is not slow I didn't encounter any UI hiccups even just once when I was testing it.
And seriously? Too big? Mind you the Xperia Z is only less than 2millimeter bigger than HTC One. That's almost like as thick as the cloth/textile on your shirt.
I am not trying to go against you but I don't really like biased comments.
The Droid DNA does very well in reviews and benchmarks. Check out the YouTube videos about its reviews and benchmarks.
I have a Note 2 and it is also a good phone if you like to watch movies/shows on the go.

What can you tell me about the xperia z

Hi guys. Have gone back quite a few threads in here so apologies if this has already been asked.
I am coming up to the magic upgrade date and am very keen on the xperia z. I have been on xda for nearly 2 years now and know that this community is the dog's and you guys can help me out. I know it all comes down to personal preference, but seeing as you have had the phone for a few months now can anyone give me any comments, likes or dislikes or reviews on the phone? I am asking the same question in the HTC one page as torn between the two, but keen to mix it up with Sony for the next few years. Your help is much appreciated.
Peace out.

first tell us what do you want most out of your phone? battery life? esthetic? what do you do with your phone? movies? text? games alot?
I own the Z and I dont feel its a substantial upgrade from the S3, limiting battery life from a 7000mah battery kinda sucks too.
I assume you are using a HTC Incredible S, according to your signature.
If that's the case then my experience may reflect yours.
Previously i've a SE Xperia Arc S. It was incredibly fast coming from my old motorola milestone, the screen was better, had HD recording etc. However after the ICS came it became sooooooo slow and choppy, i couldn't stand even touching it. Luckily i had an unlocked bootloader, so i could install CM/AOKP. The major bottleneck of the phone was the low RAM. 512 MB onboard, 380 MB usable due to the Exmor sensor. The battery life was poor, so was the quality of the arc (plastic cover breaking, cracks, scratches on the display, chrome parts loosing their color etc.)
Finally, after 2 years i replaced it with an unbranded xperia z. Oh god, where should i begin? The look and feel of the phone are outstanding. The build quality is top notch (it fell off a table 3 times, surviving without a single scratch). The display is incredible, very very crisp, natural colors and good brightness. If you are used to oversatured colors then you might dislike this one. Perfect perfomance in my opinion (coming from a single core 1,4ghz cpu ), rarely any hiccups or slowdowns. Sure the HTC One might have a snapdragon 600, but whats the increase on paper? 15%? You wouldn't even notice the difference in everyday use tbh. The development is also really fast. I think the first working CM10.1 was out before the phone was actually released.
Anyway, i'm in love with this phone, and if i had the chance to exchange it with a different one, i probably wouldn't do it.
I personally have a xperia z love it battery life is good screen excellent as I had a Samsung galaxy note 2 and traded up to the xperia z. I send text make calls listen to music I use the sat nav software very quick phone can't fault it even with stock rom.

first tell us what do you want most out of your phone? battery life? esthetic? what do you do with your phone? movies? text? games alot?
I own the Z and I dont feel its a substantial upgrade from the S3, limiting battery life from a 7000mah battery kinda sucks too.

Good point! I don't have the time to play games on it and when I do I'm straight on the xbox. The look and build quality of the phone is important to me that is why I have never gone for an xperia in the past and not considering the GSIIII. Camera and video is important as I have 2 kids... for my sins, as is battery life and speed of the phone. This will be my first quad core. Support is also important. My ICS is rooted and flashed so I may do this with the new phone. For all these reasons I'm looking at the Sony.

If Esthetic is the most important to you then this phone is it. If you are not a photographer or dont have photographer eyes the video and photo are "good" (low light is bad) battery life- will you be around wifi alot? if not then my typical usage is 13 hours standby and 2.5 hours screen on no wifi. speed is good no lag with NOVA launcher slight lag on xperia launcher if you have alot of widget like me. support? like dev? not alot lol...I think you should go with S4. I honestly only kept this phone because its different then what the rest of the U.S market uses. I miss my S3 a lot though.

yes i got it its fast and everything but the sony dont know how to make a software
the speaker is a joke
the headphones is not loud

its a boring phone go for the galaxy s4
Well I traded my S4 for the Xperia Z and I am not looking. Back. I mean I do not like that I can't change the battery but that's about it battery life on this device seems far superior to everything I used yet. I also didn't like that the xperia has software buttons and take away a good amount of realestate from the screen but there is hack that makes it possible to get the whole screen back. I am personally using this hack. Now I have really 5 inches of beauty. Anyhow besides that the experia z is a great phone. By the way it wasn't a one on one trade. The S4 I got 550 for and bought the xperia z for 300 so I got a better looking better battery somewhat worse camera and 250 on top for pretty much the same thing plus u still can use the normal mhl plug in and don't have to buy the special Samsung S3 S4 mhl version. I like that. So to sum it up. Besides the non removable battery and the not as good camera I think the xperia z is a even match to the S4 in some stuff even superior to the S4.

The main issue with Samsung phones is that the screen always burns in after a while and that it has when u have a black background those visible black spots on the whole screen they look like black drops and also it has a very bad black pixelation when watching movies with a lot of dark in it. That's just the amolad screen tech. Not that good when it comes to burn in and black.

I own the S3 for a year (since it release), this never happen before, are we talking over a 5 years time span? who own a phone for that long? this isnt a TV. The black is very very nice black Samsung did alot of study with this IMO, they know the consumer love saturated picture and thats what they incorporated, for photographer this is a nightmare because we stick to "true color". In the end, they are doing this to make money, I guarantee you they make more money with their AMOLED screen then Sony with their true color TFT screen. Also people complaining aobut the weight of the S3, isnt weight was a big deal for a phone in recent years? the fact that they make the phone plastic, so its as light as possible just doesnt satisfy some people. if you want a device that is not plasticly then you gotta have an aluminum body which create more weight. I dont think Samsung did it to be cheap, just what the masses want. A phone that is bigger than the iphone and yet weight less (or the same) is a win in my book.
Just have a black picture or a black background and u gonna see some black bleeding issues. I had this with all Samsung phones and there r a lot of postings and also videos about those black clipping issues on amoload screens. It is a known issue.

Planning on buying a xperia z.

I'm planning on buying a xperia z, but with all upgrades there's a few things I have to check before I can commit on buying a new phone.
1 - how stable are the cm10.2 builds ? Such as battery performance ?
2 - battery performance on stock firmware ?
Screenshots would be great...

i got the phone for like 5 months and battery life is like 2.5 - 4 hours of screen time and 18 hours - 1.5 day of stand by
without stamina i dont use it
on stock
Cm 10.2 quite stable, battery is ok.

i come from an s4... i get at least the same battery usage from the z...
it even performs better in games than the s4.. at least better than the one i had.

The battery life is pretty bad OP to answer your question honesty. Also the screen is poor, which may bother you. (very bad contrast and viewing angles). Aside from that it is good. Great design, definitely turns heads
Go look at battery tests, S4 sits as one of the top.
Also op, if you get one without an unlockable bootloder (like myself), you'll never even get to try cm

yep, two people on this site get battery life like this...
Seems legit.
Go check any battery tests on gsmarena, etc.. Did not fare especially well.
I mean it isn't horrid, but 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours of screen on time isn't anything to write home about
Depends
Depends on how you intend on using it.
If you're a avid gamer, then I probably would not recommend it. Battery life when gaming is average or below average.
However if you're not, and gaming is reserved for the tablet, then I highly recommend it.
Aside from being one of the most beautiful phones out there, you can get it for quite a good price now. Performance is, honestly, all you really need at the moment.
Despite what people say, the screen is very sharp (admittedly viewing angles are not the best, but it's not a concern for me as I pretty much always view it front on. Also when you think about it, you get more privacy).
Battery life is not bad at all (if you don't run heavy games all the time). On screen time varies and can be between 3.5 - 5 hours or so, but don't be obsessed with the times though, just enjoy it. Unless you have nothing to do all day then it's quite hard to run out of battery during the day. Talk times and quality are pretty good.
Loving my Z, I can't say that this phone is the best at anything, but all together as a package it's quite awesome. Waterproofing is a bonus.
Give it a 0.2 mm thick back cover, custom rom, maybe a sound mod and I guarantee you won't regret buying one!
Coming from my beloved ville, I'm just looking at phones with 2gigs of ram and a quad cpu, and good dev support. its between these 4 phones at the moment
-nexus 4 (mainly for support and xda support)
-s3 i9305 ( better then the s3 as it was an extra gig of ram)
-note 2 (big ass screen)
-Sony xperia z (1080 screen)
Im not the hugest phone gamer, i mainly use my device for Instagram, tumblr, and other networking apps. Iv watched a few reviews on all 4 phones and I'm kinda leaning towards the s3 and the sony ATM. Its just the screen problems (battery drain, and poor viewing angles)

My advice is not to be overly fussy about what you're looking at. By the time you decide, a bunch of new phones will be released and you'll have to start all over again.
IMO all 4 phones have all the goods you need to do what you want. For what you want to do, battery life on all 4 would be sufficient for a whole day.
They are really not all that different unless you go into the tiny details. Honestly, in my experience, being overly focused on the details will make you regret your purchase no matter what you buy.
I understand why iPhone lovers can be much less stressed with their phone choice because there is really no choice for them. I prevents them from feeling bad about making the wrong decision We all know that the iPhone is not the best but it's owners are happy. For android lovers there is a paradox of choice........ which in this case is a bad thing.
So try to look at it a different way.
Since it will be with you everyday, think about which phone matches you as a person, just like when you're choosing clothes, or a car. E.g if your practical or stylish. Reckless or careful etc.
I got the Z because I like style. You may think it may be a bit superficial but the viewing angles are really irrelevant when you think about it. When would you ever need wide viewing angles anyway? It's not like you have a group of 4-5 friends watching a movie on it all the time (if at all). I don't see anyone tilting their phones at an angle to use it. TV, yes, but phone, no. Everything is pretty much on par with the rest of them (except for maybe battery life on the Note 2, but it's too big IMO)
Trust me. Thinking about it this way will allow you to enjoy your phone more and not regret buying it.
If you ask me, I would recommend the XZ, S3, Nexus 4, Note 2 in that order.

It isn't just viewing angles though, the screen is extremely washed out looking with bad contrast.
But view angles matter if, for example, your phone is laying down on your desk and you turn it on to glance at the time, a text message, etc.. It isn\t extreme angles, it is unreadable if you aren't looking at it directly on.
I own a note 2 and this phone, I wish I could have the two make a baby.
I love the design of this phone, but the screen really gets me down :/
Spending that much money, you shouldn't have to "settle"

Get the z only if fashion over function is your thought process (you want a nice looking phone, until you turn it on)

well... at first my s4 got 4 hours of screen time (set on low brightness) after a couple of months it was 2,5.. the samsung batteries are very bad..
the screen is poor... yes... but i like it better, the screen is more visible in the sun compared to the s4... i dont really like the oversaturated screen of the s4 anyway... so win win
great design... that is one of the things.. and waterproof... that was actually why i wanted to change... on my s4 i always ended up hitting the screen when touching the damn buttons and it made me angry in the end.
what amazes me.. is that the camera is the same but samsung has made a better firmware.. the camera works very well on s4.. and the z has a very poor camera compared... focus is not great, black dots etc, low light grain and such... EXMOR surely is just a name.. not worth anything imo

Strange must have been a rogue app, I've had my note since it came out and battery life is the same as it was.
You can change to natural mode in screen settings to completely get rid of the oversaturation.
I definitely agree the z's design is amazing. Easily one of the nicest, if not the nicest, looking android phones there is.
What I don't get is why there is macro mode on Samsung but not Sony :/

It's a good phone for the price. It's got a sd slot which is always appreciated. Performance is fine and it's got 2gb ram, that will make it last at least 2 years.
The screen is fine for me. Yes, viewing angles aren't great but nothing to worry about, unless you watch very dark movies at night.
Battery is average, standby time is quite good, screen time goes from 2h - 5h depending on what you do.
Haven't tried cm10.2 but Sony stock firmware is quite vanilla.
It all depends on what do you want, how much do you want to spend, etc.

macro mode? in what way?
well... the phone was deep sleeping properly... so i dont know why the battery was that bad... at least now i can say that my phone has used 60% for 2 hours 10 minutes screen time, 1 hour of calls, sms and web usage... with 2 days of standby... i am not unhappy with that.
all stock.. no root or anything.. i have relocked as i need to get the camera fixed... as i have quite a few black dots... when i get it back.. i will root and unlock the bootloader..

[Q] Upgrading to the Z1 from my HTC one!

Yo Guys!!!
This is my first post here so please take care of me.
I am going to upgrade to an Xperia Z1 from my HTC one by next month. I just needed some input from you guys on a matter I am a bit insecure about.
Online reviews are constantly bashing the phone for its sub-par brightness and ultra bad viewing angles. My HTC did everything right in the screen estate department. I would like to know what changes should I expect if I get the beast from Sony in relation to:
Viewing angles
Outdoor Visibility
Contrast
It would be awesome if some genuine Z1 user shed a bit of light on this matter.
The Z1 is a step above the Z screen but is not the best that is available in the market.. the Z Ultra although larger is a better display..if are alright with a PolyCarb build phone I would suggest a LG G2 as its got a great OIS camera and a larger (and superior) Screen plus the same internals as a Z1..I Know I am gonna get a lot of hate for this but it is a logical move if and only if water and dust proofing is not a criteria..I moved from a Z1 to the HTC One and I have owned a G2 For a couple of months so u know where I come from..I would suggest u seriously give a thought to the G2 before u invest in a Z1..
I hope I helped..
Cheers

-Viewing angles: Definitely not the best in the market, but not a dealbreaker at least for me. How often do you look at your screen off center? If you look at it directly it's one of the best screens in the market. Anything more than 20 degrees off-center and it starts washing out (but you can still read text). This is largely subjective, for me it's not a huge problem.
-Outdoor visibility: one of the best devices out there for that. IMO it's the best Android phone for outdoor visibility, 2nd only to the iPhone 5S. Where did you read that it was bad?
-Contrastretty good head on. Probably not as good as the HTC One but as good as the LG G2 definitely. Of course because of the not so good viewing angles contrast starts going away pretty quickly once you move off center.

Hey,
Thanks for the awesome reply.
In relation to the outdoor visibility, I just wanted to know how good it is. I never said that I read it was in any case bad.
And thanks for clearing out my viewing angle doubt. Probably I have to live with it, but oh well, I really don't care much for it. The only reason I asked was because if I am getting a $700 product I wanted every inch of it to be worth $700.
I have just made your move from a week ago.
Go swap your phone without thinking twice.
You wont notice any change unless u tilt the screen for extreme angles.
And yes the display is as bright sharp and great as the Htc One in normal handling.

nobody talk about battery? I find z1 the best android phone I have ever had about battery, you can cover whole day with heavy use( or at least I do) and this is the real point with today smartphone......with my z1 I never worry about battery......I think this is important....
and just two other tips.....if you take z1 I suggest you to NOT peel off the anti-shutter film, you can live with it and please don't unlock bootloader or root or downgrade or anything else, the phone is great as it is, consider that in a few weeks sony say give us 4.3 and maybe a few months we have kitkat(sony as just say taht) so for now dont mess up the phone and enjoy as it is.......maybe later in 2014 when there'll be more custom rom you can consider to root ecc ecc.......just my 2cents.....
I had an HTC One so I know exactly what you're getting into! Viewing angles are not an issue for you, it's a problem for others! If you wanna show some photos or something on your phone for a bunch of people at the same time some of them may complain! Blacks are better on the Z1 but whites look better on the One, and outdoor visibility is better than the One but still not so good

And G2 is a great phone but it is extremely ugly like Samsung (I think it's a Korean thing!)
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
one more thing to be honest. the only thing made me felt sorry and felt downgrading is the Speakers Experience. the Dual Front boom speakers of the htc one are the best in class. So am saying that to expect a very inferior speaker quality. BUT thats because u can go swim with the Z1 without a worry
i had htc one x
one x has much brighter screen, deeper blacks, better viewing angles - screen is much better in general (even tho its lower resolution)
color reproduction and viewing angles dont even come close on my new Z1
and viewing angles DO matter, as screen gets washed out from just about every angle, you HAVE to watch the screen head on in order to get the full experience which is damn annoying
IPS screens are that much better
TFT doesnt even come close, no matter what software tech sony puts in it
luckily build quality and battery are great so i am not that disappointed with my purchase
also HTC phones have MUCH better developer support for their phones (huge number of roms)
hey anybody know if ATT will release any of the xperia hopefully the c6909 since its lte?
thanks
