[Q] Hissing on calls only - Sprint HTC One (M7)

I am getting an annoying hiss in call when the other person talks whether they are on a land-line or another mobile. I have also traveled to a different towers to rule that out as well. There is no hiss when playing videos or mic recordings as some reported and turning on/off beats does not affect it. Is anyone else experiencing this? With that said the other persons voice is load and clear TY

My calls are very clear.

I've got the same problem as you. Seems as though the device is not filtering out static noise frequencies like it should be. Didn't have this problem on my EVO 4G LTE. Hopefully there is a firmware fix possible for this.

Thanks for the tip! I already got one on the way for a dead pixel / black speck on screen... but I gather almost half of them have that too so I'll just decide which of the two to keep and move on.

OTA 3.05.651.6 finally fixed this problem for me. Nine months late but better than never. Here's hoping they don't have a regression for this in the forthcoming kit kat upgrade!

[Q] Buzzing Noise From Phone

Has anyone noticed intermittent interference noise on their SGS internal speakers? It is a high-freq buzz that lasts less than 10 seconds at a time, but can easily be heard when holding the phone close. I hear it sometimes in a call or when transmitting data and it seems like it is coming from the rear speaker.
Edited for clarification: The noise is coming from the phone; specifically the speaker on the back of the phone, not from external speakers.
Has anyone else noticed this kind of noise coming from their SGS?
Chris
No one? I am certain now that the noise is coming from the rear speaker and it is not heard when wifi is on, so it must be interference from the 3g.

No one at all?

Yes, it's always been a thing that happens with phones.. I remember with early generations of phones, they'd always cause speakers to make a specific series of beeping noises when someone received an sms.
I think it's caused by using one of the older data connections.. gprs or something maybe. There's nothing that can change this.
Yes, I recall hearing the buzzing and popping on computer speakers caused by some phones. My question was specifically to do with hearing interference in the rear speaker on the phone itself, do you hear anything like that? I don't actually hear any interference on external speakers.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Oh, you mean the speaker on the actual phone? Umm, nope, it's always been quiet..
Doesn't sound like it should be doing that, if it's been like that since you got it, might want to send it in for a check or something.
I just checked a friends phone at it does the same thing. The best way to check is to start an app that transmits continuous data on 3g, like speed test. And when its running put the rear speaker close to your ear. You can also hear it out of the front earpiece in a quiet room. These are canadian gt9000m's.

Edited original post for clarification.

Yeah, i noticed that aswell, usually when i make calls or take calls, for like 10 seconds, working on normal GT-I9000 here.
I'm wondering if this is a normal occurence, maybe they couldn't get enough shielding on that rear speaker.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Can anyone else verify that they can or cannot hear the buzzing? I am considering getting samsung warranty to look at it, but only if it's not a common phenomenon. Would hate to send it in and have or come back the same.
Thanks

Just an update, my phone was replaced due to the internal sd card issue and the new phone is exhibiting the same buzzing sound. Though the sound does seem somewhat quieter on this new phone. Unless I am extremely unlucky, it seems that the noise is normal for the phone but most people just don't notice it.

i heard the buzzing a few days ago and opened the back up and a bee flew out, ive not heard any buzzing since
sorry couldnt resist
same here.. found no solution yet.,... help
yes,i can hear it clearly...someone sad it named TDD noise which was caused by the GSM signal...if u use 3G,u may not hear it any more...
A few people in china found this problem too. They sad only the SGS produced in december had this problem...but it seems that u posted the thread in november....
re: december.
I have had 4 sgs's now (3 returns) that have had the noise, going back to september 2010.
re: gsm
My network here is 3g only, don't use gsm at all.

I also get the same thing with my phone as well, despite factory resets or exchanges thus far. Is this a normal problem?
So far, the noise disappears if you disable 3G in some way, either via turning off data or using Wi-Fi. I'm in Canada, where signals exist on 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. My phone was also purchased in November, and the replacement was sometime in early December.
My phone T959 .the brother of i9000, have the same problem...I have used HTC Universal ,and nokia 5230. Both are fine, no TDD noise at all..
Samsung have a long way to go...
i have it too (and tough it was faulty) and check out a friend's phone today and he has it too, didn't even know it and had the phone for a few months now. i guess we're just over demanding )

HAHAHA! Nah, it's just some Solar Activities causing communication flaws lately. It's near to 2012 anyway . Sorry, couldn't resist it either.
Anyway, I've never noticed about the noise. Been using this phone for almost a year? If its only with SGS, and all experiencing this are buying them at a relatively similar time, it would probably be a "batch issue".
Considering T959 experiencing the same issue, then maybe there's something wrong with how Samsung manufacture their phones. But somehow, there are lucky people who get good ones. Or most likely, this issue is too mild and there is actually nothing wrong with it. Nothing is perfect my dear friends

[Q] Call Quality - Hissing

Hi all,
Hoping someone can help; I've had the phone for a week and speakers have been fine, I've actually started making calls more this weekend and today and I've noticed a hissing noise whenever the other person speaks; it really reduces clarity a bit. I have full signal my end; I've made test calls to other people and my answerphone, when there's no talking on the call there is no hiss, it's only when the other end speaks that there's a hissing noise, almost like it's been recorded and relayed through the phone if that makes sense.
Does anyone else get this or is it crystal clear for everyone?
It's nothing to do with Beats Audio, I've made calls with that on and off with the same outcome.
many thanks!

How old are you? Serious question.
People with young ears can hear higher frequencies that older people can not and that's an established scientifically proven fact.
If you're in the 15 to 25 age range the HTC One may perform, to your ears, substantially differently to people in other age ranges.

This doesn't make a hissing noise acceptable. If it happens on every call, even in different locations, the phone should be sent back for an exchange.

I'm 29. It's definitely something not 100% right. I came from an iPhone 4S and although quality was never amazing, I noticed it being a problem as I have with the HTC. Seeing as this is a better phone than the 4S; I expect call quality to be better also, not worse.
I've just heard so many reviews saying call quality was so good and when I speak to people over the phone, it sounds like a recording made on a cassette and I find myself having to turn the volume up to max.
I did consider that the people I speak to may have a bad signal too so rang 3 (the network I'm on) and listened to their menus, the thinking being that if I have full signal there should be no problem and still there was distortion in the recorded menus.
Anyway, I've rang 3 and they've happily said they'll exchange the handset, only problem is they can't get stock until the 23rd April. I can still make out what people are saying so it's not an emergency, it's just that when you have a premium handset you want it to be just that. From all the digging around I've done it looks like a hardware issue with my phone. It;s just odd though because in regular use, the speakers are fantastic.

If you physically can not hear any hissing then hissing isn't an issue.
If someone who can hear 'hissing' and changes their handset and can still hear hissing then it's an issue for them.
Hissing could be a side effect of noise cancelling.
Anyone who's had any experience of ANR in recording situations will confirm that.

I've had 4 handsets now that have all had this problem. Try listening to classical music on low volume or record a video in a quiet room and play it back. Also try classical music with headphones on low volume, same issue. Beats audio makes this issue worse but does not create it. After so many replacements I'm now done with this phone, getting an s4 instead, which is a real shame.

Have done, did do, still am. Quality headphones, too. Lots of tops, still no 'hiss'
I listen to a lot of spoken word/classical/stuff, sourced direct from CD as well as radio/web/ and FLAC wherever possible.
I understand that 'hiss' on my HTC One isn't an issue for me but also happy to state that it might be for others
and I might not hear hiss as a result of loitering round 40k sound systems.
Look after your ears. Like your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone
i have had this very same problem on the 3 handsets i have had, all sim free phones from phones4u. I am also on '3' and wonder if its a sim card or network issue? When it works fine the call quality is very good however i would say that in 6/10 calls i have the hiss/static noise when the other person is speaking.
I have a 'late build' handset from one of the fw build places and generally the build quality is better and i also do not suffer the haptic button/lack of response on back and home buttons that i had on the previous devices.
Could it possibly be sim card related?
Hi all
I have the same issue with about 90% of calls and am also with 3. I'm on my 3rd handset now and all have had the same problem. The hissing is only when the other person speaks and although I can still understand them, it's very annoying. Apart from this issue, the phone is great but I'm seriously thinking of changing to the S4 which I'm really not happy about.
I've also changed my SIM for a new card today and it's made no difference. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Hissing. Try another handset. Troll.
Well, I'm pleased it's not just me then!
As I said, replacement due next week, if it's the same then that'll be a shame. I'm not sure yet if it's enough to make me cancel and get another phone but it would be nice if there was an improvement.
There is a low hissing on video recording in silent rooms but to be honest, it's not really audible in a normal environment and it's no different to other handsets I've recorded video on. You can't expect a phone to be 100% brilliant at everything it does, just hope for it! If I want a clean sounding, picture perfect video, I'd use my camcorder. When I need to take a video there and then and have the phone, usually it's of my kids and usually they're running and screaming so any hissing is not heard.
I did take a call this morning and although not what I would describe as crystal clear, was an improvement on yesterday; perhaps it is signal related and by that I mean the signal of the person at the other end. If their signal is weaker then perhaps this is just how it sounds on the HTC and I will have to live with it if I like the phone enough; which I do.
Thanks again everyone, you've helped me not to feel alone and that it was all in my head!

Try setting the phone to GSM / 2G and see if you still have the "hissing". I have this on Xperia Z on Orange and 3 mobile when the phone is in 3G or H mode while making calls.
Edit: sorry I noticed you're on 3 mobile and they don't have 2G. I think it is related to network mode though and not reception.

Thanks for that helpful and constructive reply. HTC told me to try changing the SIM card, unfortunately I'm not as phone savvy as you obviously are!
I'm just trying to work out why all three handsets had the same issue. I only have 8 more days left of 3's 28 day exchange policy, so need to decide whether to put up with this or exchange for an alternative handset that hopefully won't have this issue.
I don't honestly think that getting another handset will change the call hissing issue as u have had it on all 3 if mine. Honestly think it must be '3' thing don't know if it's network or SIM or setting problem. I am just trying to decide if I can live with it or not.

I have read about this issue. It is due to the noise cancelling mic configuration. It was first noticed in 1080P videos where there is a slight hiss no matter what. So far it is thought to be a software issue that should be fixable via changing a gain setting we don't have access to currently. Again this is just hear say right now so take it with a grain of salt.
Hope HTC recognise this problem quickly along with the other things like the captive button issues and release a fix asap or they face undoing all the hardwork that was but into designing this phone and forcing everyone to the gs4

[Q] Speaker Static?

I rarely use the speaker while on a phone call, but today while on a call I noticed that while the other person talks, or makes any noise, I hear a slight static in the background. It's more pronounced if I have the speaker volume as low as it goes (still on speaker mode.)
If anybody can test it and let me know if they have it too, an easy way would be to just call a 1-800 number, such as 1-800-BEST-BUY. I'm curious to see if my speakers are starting to go out.
Once again, the issue is only there while they're making a sound of any kind. If they're quiet, there is no static.
Thanks!
[EDIT]
I just noticed it happens in non-speaker mode as well. Maybe it's just the fact that it's a phone call and it's not meant to be crystal clear?

Yeah, 4.4.2, and reception is fine. It's slightly there with headphones, so I'm thinking it's just the fact that it's a phone call, and phone call quality is never the greatest.
My one does the same randomly. I find that calling back using gvoice makes everything clear. With all this NSA mess who knows

Earbuds mic not working on CM11

After a few issues i managed to install the latest CM11 nightly on my att htc vivid (s-off) however today i noticed that my wired mic is not working when doing a call, the person i am calling can not hear me.
I checked the CM11 thread and it seems that there is at least another memeber that is experiencing the same.
Is there anything i can do? I have tried my iphone and galaxy s4 earbuds with the same results...

If you read through the forum you should find a number of other people having the same problem. I have seen a couple of people claim that Skullcandy buds do work, haven't heard any others.
I dont think it is an issue of the brand of buds
I have tried several types with the same results. Whats more, everything works fine when i use Vonage or Skipe, the other person can hear me without problems.
This issue only happens when i do a regular voice call. Rather than hardware, it seems like an issue on the voice call application in the phone

hiss in call

Hello all,
I have noticed that the calls (at least on Tmobile) are quite noisy / with hiss - both on the earpiece and the bluetooth headset. Anyone else noticed this?
I feel like I had a slight hiss noise where I hear in the background but it's intermittent, not continuous. I could be describing it wrong though. GPS 32gb.
A lot of peeps have this issue. There is a long thread about this. Most likely you got a bad unit. Good luck though i had 4 units have same issue.

I also hear this 'hiss' during phone calls. Also when I am playing a game, that I have muted all sounds for, the speakers keep giving empty noise.
