Will I be stuck on EDGE speeds with T-mobile sim? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning to pull the trigger, like in 2 minutes.
I currently use T-Mobile ($30 plan) on my Nexus 4 and enjoy HSPA+ speeds in NYC. Does T-Mobile work on the Xperia Z on their 3G network? Or is it like my iPhone 4 and will be stuck on EDGE forever.
Thanks

did you buy the 6603 or 6602 version? if 6603 then yes if 6602, u will get HSPA+

I just got a C6602 replacing my Nexus 4, HSPA+ speeds are the same on a $30 plan T-Mobile SIM.

Since you are in NYC, head down to Bowery Street and At GSM in order to get the C6602. I bought my device there.
It supports the T-Mobile bands and is the obvious version to get for use in the US. The C6603 should be avoided since it lacks the important bands, not only for T-Mobile but it is also a bit crippled on the AT&T network.
The good thing is that the C6602 can use the same ROMs as C6603. So no need to worry about developer support.

That is a good option so go for it. The only thing I wonder about is how it can have the US warranty since the C6602 isn't sold here, officially. It is an imported unit and they are usually without US warranties. If Sony offers a better policy than Samsung for example and honor the warranty, it is great news for me too. My previous imported phones has been the Note and Note II and Samsung doesn't cover them under the US warranty so that is why I think it is surprising to see it for that C6602.

its never too late?
it may be too late but negri electronics has it for 581.50 plus a $10 coupon that brings it down to 571.50, no tax free shipping

got it on ebay from HK user...free BT lol not that i will use it but gonna bundle with my old phone and sell it. O and its 591 with free shipping, takes a while though :/

Z/ZL US Release date?

Does anyone know yet which of these models(Z/ZL) are coming to the US? And maybe a release date?
:fingers-crossed:
Both will probably be coming to the US, but only unlocked through Sony's own retail channels. If I'm right both sets will work with HSPA+ on AT&T and T-Mobile (so no LTE).
Spectre should have more info on this though.

The ZL will have LTE but not the Z which will only be HSPA+ (still very fast, I get upto 6.5 Mbps on my Xperia T on at&t on their HSPA+ network).

Not really, considering AT&T's transfer caps.
Even if I had LTE available in my area, I'd take an unlocked HSPA+ device over a carrier-mangled locked-down LTE device without any hesitation.
LTE isn't all it is cracked up to be, once you take into account monthly transfer limitations (Since AT&T now throttles "unlimited" users, there is no such thing as "unlimited" any more.), especially if you have access to HSPA+.
LTE was more critical for Verizon users, since CDMA2000 hit a wall without an upgrade path far earlier than UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ did.
I'm really hoping the rumors that the Z will be sold directly in a timely fashion are going to be true.
The ZL will be available from AT&T as far as I can tell, but that version will suffer from complete lockdown in addition to traditional AT&T firmware mutilation.

Its still up in the air about the Z availability in the US. Hoping its sold directly too.
AT&T isn't picking up the Z or ZL. but both should work on its network.
So till now, AT&T was the only carrier that sold the sony smartphones, with the only exception I think was the playstation phone on verizon.
So the most logical thing for me is Sony to push again through AT&T, because:
1) They already have done business in the past, and have worked out the business side, so it's a safe bet, they might try to work deals with other carriers later through the year to have bigger exposure to the market.
2) It's a flagship phone, Sony will try to get it in the hands of as many people, the comment that it'll be available only full price in retail channels made me laugh The situation is so heated, that they'll have to loose ton of money, just to try to snatch some market, to have a chance to stay a player in this market. They surely want to be in this market, why would they make the Z and show it at CES when no other big name was revealing top models - so they grab the spotlight at CES, and the phone doesn't get lost in all the announcements coming in Feb from the mobile congress.
3) AT&T would love to have another strong horse in the race so they are not dependent only on Apple or Samsung for the best devices they offer. For AT&T the bigger portfolio of manufacturers that want to move devices on their network gives them edge on pricing and other deal terms.
So yeah, I can bet money that in couple of weeks, there will be announcement/leak that AT&T will carry a Z/ZL phone, with LTE of course.
Spectre51 has said it before, AT&T won't be carrying the ZL or Z. The ZL will be sold unlocked through Sony's own retail channels, the Z may be sold unlocked too.

I'm starting to like this phone. I'm currently on T-Mobile so I probably will only see 3G speeds correct? If so maybe StraightTalk could be an option as my contract expires in June of this year.

I wonder why AT&T would skip out on such a great device. Especially considering what appears to be a long term relationship with Sony. It doesn't make much sense...

They were supposed to pick up the ZL but backed out a month or so ago. They will be picking up the Fall device from Sony and it's supposed to be a flagship phone.

Experia Z on AT&T in the USA?

Hi guys, My Z is coming tomorrow and I'm on the AT&T network in the USA. Now I know the device will work on the HSPA under the 850 band just fine (which is in my area) I am un-sure about AT&T's LTE working. I want to say that it will NOT work on AT&T's LTE. Aside from that, anyone here using the Z in the states on AT&T..? And if so, any problems at all..?
Thanks!

Are you sure you area is 850? Most different states my note 2 hardly ever works on HSPA+ via 850 most of the time its 1900 for me anyway. But thats the only reason Why Im stopped from buying it I dont want it and just have EDGE haha. Where did you order? Handtec has it for 650 after shipping and such.
Also No go for AT&T LTE. Only for the ZL>
Ya mine would of came friday had it not been for customs, so monday it is and hopefully there wont be any problems.
I live in NJ and most of the north east has 850. Matter of fact, I had heard that AT&T was replacing all the 1900 HSPA towers with 850 as its a better frequency. That conversion was sappse to be finished at the end of this year.
Where did you get it? I've dealt with Handtec before for Samsung phones.
How can you tell what band your phone is on by the way? (I live in MD with no LTE support anyway)
I'd like to place an order tonight.
I'm in Chicago and I didn't pull the trigger on the c6603 because the rep I talked to at AT&T highly advised only buying a phone that had 850 and 1900 bands. So now I'm waiting for this supposed c6602 to come out that will support HSPA+, or the mythical c6606 that supports LTE.

+1 or the ZL C6506 about to release and less expensive...
Just placed my order with Handtec. Was $646.36 shipped.
I live in California and 850 is everywhere on att. I think you should be fine in most places on att as they didn't even really start building out PCS until 10years or so ago. It's hard to find frequency maps but for the most part it's everywhere, 850 has better building penetration and 1900 is used for capacity/high density areas... there are of course are always exceptions. I should be receiving my 6603 sometime before Wednesday so I'll report my findings.
I ordered from clove which was a bit more expensive than handtec shipped ($680) but they include the wireless blutehooth speaker w/nfc pairing which is about $100 by itself. Can't wait to get my hands on this beauty.

What state do you live in? Att has quite a few markets where they either acquired PCS or just chose to build out 1900 and that is the preferred frequency. Like I said there are exceptions, it would make sense for you to wait for the 6602.

No, customs or vat charges don't apply when ordering to the US. I'm not sure about handtec but clove - I ordered on Thursday and they shipped on Friday, it arrived in the states on Saturday so now I'm just waiting for snail mail to actually deliver. Just a heads up with handtec and or clove, they may make you jump through some hoops to verify your identity if you've never ordered from them before.

With Handtec there are no other charges. (price + shipping is it)
If you checkout with Google Wallet, you shouldn't have any issues. (I've purchased bunches from Handtec via google wallet, never had an issue)
Tried using my visa bank card once, had major problems with fraud prevention flagging it, so I've only used a credit card since.
I did a LONG time ago have a problem with my International SGS2 from Handtec, it got pulled in customs by FedEx. I had to call customer support, fill out a form, and email it to a FedEx agent. Little bit of hassle, and added an extra day to shipping. Its never happened since.
Mine just shipped, I wouldn't be surprised to have it by Wed. They are amazingly fast getting things to the east coast. (usually Handtec is faster for me than Negri... and cheaper)
Negri JUST sent me an email ad for the Xperia Z. $748. I paid $643 with Handtec.

Where did you hear that 1900 was preferred? AT&T has stated time and time again that they plan of phasing out 1900 in favor of 850 as its a way better band all together. They say by year end of 2013 they plan to convert to all 850... Gotta find the link that talks about that a repost.

Why hasnt anyone tried the z1 with at&t!!!

I am literally loosing sleep over the z1 ready to buy it but just weary of the fact that it wont support lte in my area.. what can I do?

Are in in the USA?
If you're not under contract, I'd just get a Straightalk t-mobile sim. What Straightalk does is " rent" other carriers networks, includung both AT&T and T-mobile. Straightalk doesn't support LTE. With T-mobile' awesome HSPA+42 speeds and great coverage, you won't miss LTE, plus it's only $45 bucks a month. HSPA+42 is really close to LTE but with better coverage. One of the joys of having an unlocked phone is freedom to choose a cheap carrier.
The reason T-mobile doesn't suck as much as it used to is because of the failed merger of AT&T and T-mobile. It gave them extra money to upgrade their network and more bands.
It seems there is a model that supports AT&T LTE, the C6906, but don't count me on it. Refer to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2438443&page=2
If you end up getting a z1 model c6903 which doesn't have LTE on AT&T, and must have AT&T, I'd again recommend a straightalk AT&T sim so you are not paying for LTE which the c6903 can't use. On AT&T HSPA+21 is the fastest you'll get.
If you're close to the end of your contract, I'd just get a C6903 and switch when you finish out the contract.
you will get hspa+ but no lte
That is on AT&T.. On T-Mobile, you can get LTE!

haha i think speed difference between LTE and 4G(h+) is huge man..
I would pay extra cash for the phone with right lte frequency for my current service provider, without any hesitation, or i would even switch to other carrier that supports right frequency if i can't afford to change my phone, which in your case, T mobile i think.
But then again that's just me

It's my first time to buy an unlocked phone with full price. I used to use contract phone till time is up to get a new contract phone. Same model #s: F8132 for dual SIM (mine), F8131 for single-SIM.
they're the exact same radio according to Sony. so hardware wise if intl can do it so can us version. but do the carriers allow it is a whole other issue.

Ok thanks for checking acme! Well the XP has all the same bands as T-Mobile, so they should! Though I found out that XPs used in other countries like Hong Kong DO get VoLTE (I've seen screenshots too), but in the US, both AT&T and T-Mobile SIM cards don't enable that. Weird! I'd still like someone WITH a US XP to confirm that they do or don't have VoLTE though on AT&T and/or T-Mobile.
Yeah like today I was in downtown Chicago with family, and like my parents have the Sony Xperia Z1s (locked phone from T-Mobile). We were down by Navy Pier (by Lake Michigan), and my dad's Z1s (released Jan 2014) was getting better reception than my brand new int'l XP (unlocked not through T-Mobile but from Sony b/c Sony are idiots who don't release phones through carriers anymore and I hate them for it lol).
Now, I thought this was maybe b/c their phones were from T-Mobile so they'd been "configured" to their network, but then my sister's b/f was saying that some of the older model phones have better radio reception than the newer ones b/c the newer ones have more crap CRAMMED into them, which can impede radio reception, despite the XP having a polycarbonate (aka plastic lol) frame which is supposed give you better reception than metal would.
You think that's it? Or do you think it has something to do with the XP not being "configured" by T-Mobile??
Thanks.

i'd bet money it has something to do with a configuration. If Sony already designed a phone where all the radios work why would they break it in later iterations, doesn't make sense. it's also illegal to say the phone can do this and that when it actually can't.

Ok then how do I reconfigure it? lol If it was that the radio was just better/stronger on the Z1s that's one thing, but if it was that my XP somehow wasn't configured "well enough" to T-Mobile's network, despite having all the same bands, then how do I fix that? lol
It could be that the phones are designed a certain way but then the carriers (when they get them to sell) do some extra configuring or tweaking too?
I remember being again in another part of downtown 2 years ago and 2 friends of mine who both had Sprint and the same phone (Galaxy S3) had differing reception. One had all 5 bars lit up, while the other who was only sitting 5 feet away, had like no reception. WTF? lol That's what happened yest except 2 different phones though both are Sony, oh and mine of course is unlocked int'l version.

Sov,
Yeah I know. All I REALLY care about is that I can get Band 12 for data from T-Mobile on my int'l Sony Xperia X Performance phone. I think I can, b/c that has NOTHING to do with VoLTE, which only is used DURING phone calls. I don't care about having Band 12 during phone calls, but I DO care about having it when not on a call.

Haha..........so you have the int'l Sony Xperia X Perf on T-Mobile AND live in the U.S.??? Or know someone that does?
Well I live in Chicago which right now doesn't have Band 12 from T-Mobile. HOWEVER, a few mos ago T-Mobile bought a ton of Band 12 from an AT&T subsidiary, and so now it's only a matter of time before my entire area gets it (pending FCC approval). They say it could be as early as later this year or latest is prob next June. I'll know when it's available b/c T-Mobile will announce but I can also check their spectrum map too. When the area covered by the green circle around Chicago becomes "magenta" and has a bunch of circled 12s put into it, then that'll mean it's live. Can't wait!!

Oh wow! That's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you have T-Mobile too though????!
I just wanna be able to get reception (data) in certain areas in downtown like at the Ogilvie Metra Station basement, Untitled club on Kinzie, etc. I'm hoping that Band 12/700 MHz will make that happen. But also for when I'm indoors in certain places in the suburbs.
Thanks for sharing this great info!! I figured it would but wasn't sure. I think the ppl who said no were thinking of VoLTE, or aka having 4G LTE data and/or voice DURING calls.

Awesome! Good to know!!
Haha...........I already tried doing that. I even had someone at T-Mobile's "Network team" contact their "contact" over at Sony Mobile about that issue. Last I heard, they never heard back from the Sony guy. lol But go ahead.........can't hurt!
I couldn't agree more. It's ****ing BS. It's the least they could do after not giving the US Z5 and X Perf a working fingerprint sensor. lol
