Are apps and OS installed on the 32/64GB storage drives? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have the HTC Sensation 4G (TMOUS). It has 1GB of internal storage that was just for Apps and the OS, IE it was not user accessible (unless you had root). Then you had your MicroSD for the usual user and app data storage stuff.
From what I have read there are not two internal storage drives on the One, so I was wondering if the 32/64GB drives are partitioned?
The reason why I'm asking it that I am trying to talk myself into the 32GB model, but if there is 26GB of available space on the 32GB and 1-1.5GB of that will be apps and OS then effective the available space is reduced to ~24GB.

Not quite sure what you are getting at but the 32gb model is of course 32gb. The quoted accessible space is what is remaining to the user after the operating system and included apps are installed and can be used for whatever you wish (app. data, media etc.). This will not be reduced by the operating system as it is in a separate part (partition?) of the storage.

Perfect, thanks.
Do you know the size of the app/OS partition?

That's simply not the case here. The 32gb partition is used by os and apps. Actually, the available space right after unboxing is approx 25gb

On Froyo now, but wondering how much storage should I have now?

Here's the scoop, I have a rooted N1 and flashed, Froyo Vanilla AOSP 2.2 for N1, which I picked up from ChrisSoyars Twitter feed. It works wonderful, but my available storage is 152MB....is this correct?? When I bought the phone I had 181MB of available storage or something close to that. I don't have any apps installed and that is why I find this kinda odd>>>>>>I just saw that FB, Google Voice, Twitter and Google Goggles are installed, but this still doesn't look right.
So, though the N1 claims it has 512MB storage we can only use 200MB of it???
And why do I have less now than before??
Can anyone help clear this up for me....
Thank you.
You seem to be getting your jargon confused.

Are you talking about memory or storage? The N1 shipped with 512MB of memory, of which only about 256MB was accessible. With the Froyo update you will have access to all of your 512MB of memory finally.
The 200MB you're talking about seems to be the internal storage. That will be different after updating because different OS images are different sizes. Also your internal space will vary with the size of various application caches. Nothing to worry about.

You actually have your jargon confused
N1 shipped with 512mb RAM and 512mb ROM
The 512mb RAM is not what hes talking about. There is 512mb of storage but only some of that is available to install apps with
storage requires a type of memory. flash memory. -_-
RAM = memory
Flash = memory
As for the question, the 512mb storage is split for system files and applications. you only have that much space for applications
Yeah, flash is technically a type of memory but it's not a good idea to call it just memory without elaboration because by default "memory" refers to volatile memory.
Okay, so now that I am on Froyo I should have 512MB of memory aKa RAM available as opposed to the 256MB of RAM that Eclair was allowed to use?? And the reason I have 152MB of internal storage is because of the OS and the applications are eating into the 512MB of internal storage the phone shipped with??

it does not default to volatile memory. its all a matter of context. his context clearly indicated that he was referring to his onboard storage lol
its just that the general population doesnt care to make a distinction haha

yes your exactly right. the storage is split up into chunks. only one piece is dedicated to apps
Thank you for clearing this up.

[Q] Quick Q: How much storage available for apps on Streak 7?

Frustrated Archos 70 user here. How much space is available to install apps on the stock Dell Streak 7 rom? I'm thinking of flipping my A70 for a Streak 7 mainly because the A70 only allows for 300mb of apps (unless you want to void your warranty).
Thanks, all.

16 GB, and get Apps2sd pro you can move apps to a SD card.
I would like a2ext because some apps still wont move and they are big

The /data partition (used for apps & userdata) is 1.9G, I have a ton of crap installed and 1.3G free, and all of my apps are installed to the internal /data (no a2sd here).

Thanks! This was precisely the info I was looking for.
I use appmonster to move games and other non-essential apps over to the "internal sd" card.
I haven't run into any memory issues.
I have been bouncing around looking for a good 7" tablet WiFi only. Looked at several and keep seeing this 16GB internal SD vs app/data. So if I understand correctly you get roughly 1.9GB of available data/app storage with a 16GB SD card (built in) and the apps auto store to the built in card or do you move them as you normally do with Froyo?
I noticed it takes a full sized SDXC card which is odd but that would be for movies and heavy content is my guess.
Does this sound about right?

all apps default to that 1.9gb of storage, but I move ones that aren't system necessary (like launcher pro) to the internal sd card using appmonster. I'll check in a bit and see how much actual storage I am using.
I am using my 16gb sd card (actually a micro with adapter, didn't realize it was a full size, could have saved some money), for movies/ t.v. shows.

[Q] Internal Memory Location

I am not sure where to find the full 16GB of storage available on the Vivid. When I look at the folder structure I see an sdcard and sdcard2. Sdcard seems to be internal storae and has 8GB available. Sdcard2 is my external SD card. Does anyone knbow where the orthe 8GB of space is? Maybe I am lookin at this wrong and missing something obvious.
I am going to assume you installed apps already? Those will take up part on the phones internal storage. If you have loaded music and videos it is quite possible you loaded them onto the internal storage as well. Also you will never see a Full 16gb worth of storage availability because if I recall correctly it shares some of that storage for the OS.

The phone is using 4gb for apps and 8gb for sd card storage. Obviously you know that we won't get the whole 16gb to use.
Here is a screenshot for the apps:
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
OTB I was showing 9GB Phone memory, 4GB Internal storage and 3.15GB left on my 32GB microSD card.
Hmm now that I actually went back and looked I do see what you mean. When connected to PC the available storage is 8.83 GB. What you need to remember is that Sense takes up an extraordinarily large amount of space compared to say Stock Android or pretty much any other version of Android out there. So my guess is once we see a CM7 or an Optimized Sense Rom we won't be able to access more than what we have right now. Kinda does throw you for a loop though when they "Say" 16GB worth of Internal Storage and Don't include an SD Card to compensate for the "Lie".
SGS2 has 16GB and you get 11.3GB. Not to mention a reset doesnt wipe the 11.3GB while the Vivid does wipe its 8.83GB.
So I am not sure that Sense takes up that much more space than touch wiz.

Thanks for the responses guys. I realized after I posted that I hadn't even looked at the data partition. I expected a certain amount of spece to be eaten up by the OS but not 8GB. It makes much mor sense now.
The internal space is actually partitioned into three: 3GB for apps, 8GB as "sdcard", and the remaining 4GB are a system partition.

Only 2.88GB Application Storage. Stock phone. Where is my space?

I was having issues with my phone and accidentally deleted some system apps so I restored my phone using the fastboot files and cleared my internal SD card storage. Upon reboot (with no apps installed), there is only 2.88GB of application storage available.
If I remember correctly, 8GB is allocated to the internal SD card. Does that mean 8GB goes to application storage? If so, where is my other 5GB?
2.88 for Apps, 8 for internal, and the rest(no more than like 4 gig) for the OS if IIRC.
The OS takes up that much space?
Your internal storage is divided up in to three separate sections...
Apps (your app storage), Media Storage (this is actually like extended app storage or Apps2SD) and SDcard. Not sure the split but I think 8 for apps and media storage (split there however) and the other 8 for /sdcard.
An external SDCARD added would be /sdcard-ext
OS space is never listed as part of a phone's available storage so the 16 GB is has is dedicated to Apps/Media Storage/SDcard

So under storage it lists:
Total Phone Storage
Total Space 16.00GB
Application Storage
Available Space 2.73GB
Internal Media Storage
Available Space 8.00GB
Windows Media Sync
Windows Media Sync Storage Internal Storage (8.00GB/8.00GB)
The phone is stock with no updates/market apps. No pics, music, etc (Was backed up and formatted). I should still see 5.27GB somewhere right?
This summed it up pretty well for me. I think I answered my own question. This is exactly what my phone shows.

Awesome, thank you. I don't know why Motorola does that. They should advertise the amount of space that I can use, not how much is in the phone.
They inflate the phone's storage capacity to fool you into buying it, thinking you're really getting that much. It's an old trick.

Repartition the phone and flash with custom OS and you can use all that space, right?
Yea, that's probably why Moto Mobility is going down under.
I think a custom OS takes up space from your media partition.

Does this phone ever show "Insufficient Storage" when updating apps?

My wife has a Droid Incredible 4G LTE that is basically out of space because of the way it is partitioned by HTC. Rather than having 1 big partition, it has one partition labeled internal storage, one labeled phone storage and then the external SD Card. Unfortunately, apps can only be moved from from the tiny 1GB internal storage over to the still small (not sure of size) Phone Storage. Even though every app that can be moved over to Phone Storage is moved, big apps like Facebook always fail to update and say Insufficient Storage available. Although when I look in Settings, it does show over 100MB free for the Internal Storage. On my Galaxy Nexus, when I go to Settings->Storage, it just shows my 1 big 32GB partition and everything seems to use it and I have many more apps installed than my wife and never once had an app fail to update because of insufficient storage. Has HTC gotten away from the strange partitioning setup that the Incredible 4G LTE uses with the One and gone to one big unified partition?
The partitioning is part of ICS I believe. But as of now, I've got tons of big apps and I've never run into that issue. Apps according to the Storage settings is taking up 7.53GB, but that includes the big ass game files of 3 racing games, Batman and a few others that actually reside on the SD.

The programs also has to download, and then installed - so it takes more storage than one would think. I ran into this on my old Amaze that had been upgraded to ICS. The only solution is to remove files from internal storage. I'm assuming you have run the utilities to clean out the storage?

Thanks. That looks more like my Galaxy Nexus. The Incredible 4G shows how much space is available on the different partitions. It seems like the One allows all of your storage to be used for whatever you want.

Yes I have run the "make more space" utility. It usually will let me do that round of updates. But a couple days later its telling her insufficient storage again. Its quite annoying. Just glad to see the One doesn't have that issue. Once Verizon gets it I may upgrade to it.
