but should I ask for a Nexus One or a new desktop for my graduation gift? It's a tough decision for me

that's a tough one, and depends on what you want to do.
nexus is a great phone, and i love mine, but it isn't a computer. i built my computer, and i wouldn't trade it for my phone, that's for sure

The fact that you are putting the Nexus in the same category as a desktop should give you the answer....the Nexus of course!
Yep, really depends on what you want to do.
But, I find myself using the awesome Nexus One more then my desktop everyday!
I haven't used my computer in 6 months. I do all web, email on my phone. My phone has become more important to me than a computer.
However I do still have computer access at work.
Once the flash 10 update comes to the nexus, It REALLY can be a complete substitute for a computer.

Complete substitute?? Can you write a 25 page research paper on the nexus one?? Can you run netbeans?? Common a phone will never replace a desktop they both have different purposes... just my 2c

I agree, it simply cannot be done. The Nexus is definitely a nice device, but it cannot and never will be a complete substitute for my laptop.

Of course, but I already graduated so I no longer have the need for doing that kind of work on a computer. I was just giving my example for certain usage that the nexus functions like that for me.
I think you already made up your mind before you even posted your question. I think the real question is how soon til you get your new N1 in your hands and rooted.

ive started using my nexus more than my laptop...
and my laptop is pretty nice in my tech views
i reply to emails, fb posts, tweets, pics, etc etc from my phone now...
open documents is easy on the phone...editing them is a ***** pain
other than that my phone has replaced my laptop
wish the battery life was better but i push the phone so hard it makes sense to last for 2/3 of the day with no charge
Our kids are using the N7 and I wondered how I could go about making it a good tool for them to learn on (games, letters, numbers etc.) but at the same time hide/restrict the more grown-up stuff, like email, maps and all the other stuff they won't have need of at this time.
I figured I can make a folder for all their games and learning apps, but has anyone got any ideas of how I can tweak the unit so when they use it, it will be "barebones" for them but still allow me access to the full features if the need arises. The unit is predominately for the kids so I won't need access that much. It would be great that once they switch it on, all they see is "their" stuff. Ideas...?

As far as the "child proofing" goes, definitely get a good case and screen protector, maybe even something that they can put around their wrist when they hold it so they don't drop it as much.
To hide apps, download something like Apex Launcher and go to the drawer settings, it has a way to hide any installed app.
You could also install Avast! Anti virus. I think that has a way to block certain websites from being accessed and and also includes features to find the device when lost and lock certain apps.
There is also a new launcher coming out called Chameleon that looks a lot more straight forward for a kid to use. The launcher also includes pages of apps that change the feel of the device.

If you press the All Apps icon then touch and hold an icon for a built-in app, you can drag it up onto an Info icon. As well as showing you info about the app, it allows you to disable it. So you can install only 'safe' apps and disable 'non-safe' apps', including the Play Store.
Then all you have to do is make sure they don't have access to the Tapatalk app in case they read this post...

The Play Store definitely has some child-proofing available.
If you're on the more nerdy side, you could actually root the device, set it up how you like it, then either make the Market and other offending apps invisible, or lock access to them.
Just depends on how far you want to go. Something tells me that the Play Store child-proofing may be enough.
There is an app called Switch Me. Basically it lets you configure multiple profiles by setting up a new /data partition for each one allowing you to restrict access to certain apps and so on and even have multiple Google accounts setup for each user. You should check out out.

I bought my 5 year old an original Samsung Galaxy tab 7" and he is autistic so went through a throwing phase when he first started getting into electronics, like when he'd lose in a game. Anyway we have just a silicon case for it and it has with held the torture of all time and it is still in great shape. He even threw it off a second story balcony and it landed on a hardwood floor... bouncing afterward... but still chugging. No dents or scratches or defects. Thing is a champ.
While the Nexus 7 is a little thinner, I figured I'd reply anyway. GET A CASE.... and a screen protector. The Galaxy tab is a stout device but let's hope the Nexus 7 is AS good if not better. It feels solid.
I just got mine after lots of torturing myself that my Transformer was sufficient, but I must say the more I use it the more I like it.

You could look into the Fuhu Nabi 2 that I read about recently. It is basically a nexus 7 without JB (runs ICS), built in protection, and defaults to kids mode (the dad mode is a normal android). 8GB for $199

No, not child proofing the nexus 7, but instead a "Childproof Nexus 7", as the title says, which is basically what that device seems to be. Though this would not help anybody who already has a Nexus 7, it may help somebody looking for a Nexus 7 type device for their child.

Thanks for the link to my blog. As for OP's problem of rendering the "original" Nexus 7 child proof, it's technically doable by "borrowing" ROM from rooted Fuhu Nabi 2. Naturally, presenting the kid an original Fuhu Nabi 2 and taking back an original "adult" Nexus 7 would be more practical.
Pfft! Just don't let your kids use it. Make them go outside and build tree houses, play with an abacus or read encyclopaedias. 80s *****!
I also agree on getting the nabi2 its a really nice device. My 2 year old never killed her nabi1 and the 2 seems even more solid. She has thrown both of them and took a crayon (washable) to it and wild off with no marks or scratches on th screen.
The only issue I have is no root on it, but its nice and quick. Screen is not as nice as my Nexus7, but it has microsd slot and HDMI port. I hear someone rooted one but Fuhu asked them not to release how, so if anyone hears about root please post it here on the forums. I thought about trying the root tool for nexus but she loves it too much for me to risk it.

Them Fuhuans can ask anybody anything, XDA-Devs is a free-rooting country. I think the race is on already, to turn Nabi 2 into a chewable/droppable N7 with SD slot/HDMI. My guess the N7 and Nabi 2 are twin brothers (ASUS 370T being their dad), so a "standard" N7 rooting tool will work. If not at the first attempt, then with some minor tweak.
I'm following Nabi 2 (and Furbi 2) progress in my blog closely, so you're welcome there. Can't guarantee being exclusive bearer of the news though....

I think you saw my other post about that guy and Fuhu. I tried a genetic tool. I was going to try with the nexus one, but Nabi is ICS not jellybean so did not want to risk it. Same boat, my kid loves it.
Also we got the glow in the dark bumper from fuhu with our VIP Gold upgrade, the new bumpers are bigger and thicker so should take a fall better. Just letting you know, not sure how rough you're kid is with it.

I recently was gifted a Kindle fire hd 7". I have a little experience in rooting and flashing OS's from an HTC tilt from maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I'm wondering what I can't do with my device in it's previous states, as in, what am I missing out on? So for Stock, Rooted, and I'm not familiar with what the choices are from their but I assume a small(or large?) variety of both homebrew and corporate OS's(like running windows on it) that people have tailored for this device. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site for how to do these things but I want to be more familiar with what I can do with all of the different states. Also, what are the limitations of Amazon's(or is it amazon's?) OS? It seems that even though it was open source this is a protected OS lacking a lot of customization not much different from an Apple OS.

Locked kfhd is like a bigwheel. Rooted kfhd is like a Harley. I got mine as a gift too and when I first turned it on, I was disgusted by the ugly presentation of the launcher. Then I didn't like how much crap was funneling through Amazon for a price. I knew within 5 minutes of owning it that I would be looking to root it. Now, I have go launcher on here and it works great. Waiting for cm10.

Literally rooted mine right out of the box. Never knew what true "stock" felt like, but I don't think I missed much.
Poor launcher, but most importantly google play store...
If you dont mind acquiring the apks and side loading them all and the carousel wheel, really all you lose out on is root ability thus far ive only needed that for google apps, launchers and the moga app...root gives you the ability to disable updates and ads...

I'm sure many people have asked these questions in the past and yes I have looked through the forums as well as good old fashion Google but not seen a one stop shop.
Please could someone take the time and help me with the below?
1. What are the best apps to use? What are the apps everyone is using?
2. What is the best things for Themes? I've heard of Novo and Apex but which one is the best? As a point of knowledge I'm looking for a minimalistic theme.
3. Is it really worth putting a new Rom on? Bootloader? Sorry all very new to me this stuff.
4. What do people use they Nexus for on an average day?
5. I want an app that I can draw add notes in but it is seamless with the PC so I can then transfer it to that and work on it in windows (works pc) possibly something like One Note but not One Note.

The stock ROM is great, the stock launcher is great. Look for the best reviews in the store.
I would start with ShadowGun Deadzone to see how great multiplayer gaming is on the N7.

1. This is completely relative. My favorite or most used apps could be your least favorite and never used apps. Your best bet is to wander around in the Play Store and just experiment.
2. Nova and Apex aren't themes, they're launchers. They offer more customization options than the stock launcher. You can also theme with them, yes. Again, there is no such thing as "best" - there is only preference. I personally prefer Nova Launcher Prime.
3. It depends on what you are after. If tons of customization is your thing, then yes, go with a custom ROM, such as Paranoid Android. If no, you are just a casual user, the stock ROM does a superb job.
4. Depends on the person. I read articles on it, books, some games, Skype, etc.
5. Asus Supernote.
6. XDA, Google Play Store.
7. I personally just use Chrome.

For backing up I recommend Carbon. As it works with or without root. If you're rooted you can use Titanium Backup but I've found it to be way more than I needed.
For browsing I use the default chrome. If I need flash I use firefox. You have to make sure you have flash installed seperately. See here for instructions. This works without root.

Some people recommend a custom kernel for better performance and battery lfie. Personally I have been very satisfied with a stock kernel and rom. I have rooted mine but I only use it to reset my bluetooth configuration because a gamepad I have sometimes doesn't pair properly. Somewhere on here there is a comparison of custom kernels if you want to check it out. I've forgotten where it is though.

I agree with CrazyPeter...
If as you say, you are a complete novice with regard to Android... for the time being, just forget about ROMs, BOOTLOADERs and ROOT. All that will come much later.
Just enjoy your tablet as Google intended... there's a whole plethora of interesting stuff on PlayStore to be played with first.

Here are some of my 'core' apps, which I have installed on all my Android boxes (and would consider to be incomplete without).
QuickPic, CatchNotes (In which I'm typing this), Dual File Manager, Temple Run 2, IMDB, Apex, Opera Mobile (although the new WebKit version, Opera Browser Beta is shaping up to be a great browser).
When I got my first Android device in 2010, I spent six months just playing around with stuff available on PlayStore... (read the reviews and recommendations).
This was well before I even considered rooting and flashing custom ROMs.
I would recommend you do something similar, just to gain the experience of using Android... and read, read and MORE read, everything you can.
XDA is a veritable Aladdin's Cave of Android knowledge. Avail yourself of it.

Definitely install multirom, it will allow u to multiboot different roms so u can test them out before deciding on one (or keeping them all). I personally multiboot a cm10.1 (android 4.2), paranoid android (4.1), and ubuntu (a desktop os). The reason for the 4.1 rom is coz its faster and less buggy than 4.2 , and "directory bind" app actually works - letting me run 16gb worth of android game files from a usb...awesome right?
Install flash player. google it to find the apk
use naked browser for flash.. Fastest and lightweight browser... great for flash

As what CrazyPeter said, just enjoy your tab and get all the juice you can from it. Everything will just fall into place if you want to experiment a little bit. I myself have not yet rooted or flashed custom ROMS but I'd probably will (to maximize my gaming experience). N7 is really doing well in gaming (Tegra 3 is a beast). I suggest, if you play a lot of games, go get an OTG cable and a PS3 controller or a controller built for Android (MOGA is really nice). These controller matches well with games like Shadowgun Deadzone and some pretty good console emulators (NES emu).
If you read a lot, there's a lot of really good readers (Adobe Reader, Kindle Fire) in the Play Store. Perfect Viewer is awesome for comics

Despite joining the forum in 2010, I only really started using my account when I got a Nexus 7 last Christmas, so I'm still a bit new myself. However, I think I have a somewhat impressive mass of some of the best apps/options available to a N7 power user. Especially what's been posted so far, no offense. Sure, usage is mostly personal preference, but comparing apps to find the best is what's most fun about a competitive apps market. Also, there's no reason to think that custom roms/kernels/recoveries will "come with time." You should just do it now and have an awesome tablet asap! It's basically impossible to permanently brick your device, and it's very simple to do this stuff if you just read instructions and threads before asking questions.
On that subject, if you have any questions, ask away!
1. What are the best apps to use? What are the apps everyone is using?
Browsers: xScope (my fav), Dolphin, Firefox, Opera, Boat, AOSP
Launcher: Apex and Nova, lol
Music: PowerAMP, n7player, Google Music
Video: MX Player, Netflix
File Manager: ES File Manager (stream videos/media via wifi/LAN)
E-Books: Moon+ Reader
Word/Excel/PP: OfficeSuite Pro
Cloud: Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, Box, MediaFire, MEGA, Bitcasa
Weather: The Weather Channel
Misc: Beautiful Widgets, Reddit Sync (#1 reddit browser), TeamViewer, ShareKM (really cool), uTorrent+uTorrent remote, Changelog Droid, BetterBatteryStats

2. What is the best things for Themes? I've heard of Novo and Apex but which one is the best? As a point of knowledge I'm looking for a minimalistic theme.
I don't use themes because stock is the only really great looking one to me, but there's a Themes List in the Themes and Apps section of the forums.
3. Is it really worth putting a new Rom on? Bootloader? Sorry all very new to me this stuff.
Roms, Recoveries, and Kernels are all very important when it comes to heavy optimization/customization on your device, and it's all very safe and easy on Nexus devices in particular, imo. They heavily impact functionality, speed, and appearance. Basically the Rom is what your operating system is, Recoveries are custom bootloaders that you can flash/backup/wipe/whatever with, and Kernels are like the backbone your Roms run off of.
I've tried a good few of the most popular roms/kernels, and there's a good reason they got that popular. TWRP is almost unarguably the best recovery you could get. ParanoidAndroid is outright the most used custom rom because of it's amazing customizable interface. M-Kernel is about the fastest by a margin and the developer is a cool dude. You can find these three (what I use) and a couple other good things in my signature. There's more detailed instructions if you just search around the forum or wikis or something.
4. What do people use they Nexus for on an average day?
I'm just a generally unbusy teenager, so I use mine for browsing the web, videos, reading, navigation, social networking, gaming, GAMING, file management, even working on documents for school. I know the iPad has a good handful of excellent tablet apps that just aren't really on Android, but there's still not much limitation with what you can do versus a laptop. It fits in your back pocket and the battery is god damn excellent.
5. I want an app that I can draw add notes in but it is seamless with the PC so I can then transfer it to that and work on it in windows (works pc) possibly something like One Note but not One Note.
Evernote? I dunno. I don't really take notes.
6. Where do people get the Nexus fix from? What is your source of information (apart from this wonderful website which I can believe Ive never registered on before)
reddit.com/r/Android is alright, I guess. Most important news surfaces there, and there's the occasional awesome app that recently came out. AndroidPolice is cool. Honestly, I mostly just browse the hell out of this forum and find pretty rad stuff.
7. Best Android browser (flash)
The Android Open Source Project Browser, AOSP Browser for short. It's the stock Android browser for most devices, but for some reason Google decided flashless Chrome would be a better fit, despite being slower and more quirky. The AOSP browser isn't available on any official site, but you can get it Here. Flashing it is easiest, but you can do it with ES File Manager if you wanna feel pro. Also most roms tend to replace Chrome with AOSP or a superior flash-compatible browser, just as a heads up.

Those are actually rather awesome clock widgets, but there's this one that was created by a Google dev called "DashClock" and it's exploded with support and popularity as a suggested replacement to the current bland simple clock. If you search for it in the Play store, it'll show up with loads of optional extensions.
Basically it's like the stock clock, except it allows for extensions and it'll list weather, email, notifications, music, calendar events, alarms, any function you could imagine below it. Apparently a minimal-style list is easier to use than the stupid swiping left and right for additional widgets.

- Mx player is THE video player, it plays everything.
- cloud print, if your printer supports it
- almost every printer nowadays has an app to print and scan too, very useful

Saves space on N7

- adownloader (torrent client)
That's what I use daily. Browse trough play store, most of the apps that you know from iDevices are available for android too.

Its called launcher, kind of like desktop replacement on Linux, but not really. Try the both, but only paid versions offer any real advantages over default launcher. I use nova prime.
Minimalistic themes are useless, they are not very productive, IMHO.

No, not really. You will get a hang of it as you browse xda some more, but keep it stock for now, rooting it is worth it though, for example to remove adds.

Emails, web, series and movies on the go, music player through Bluetooth adapter in the living room, news, games...
And navigation, once I get a suitable car mount.
Its also a great eBook reader, I use Mantano app.
I also use it for video monitoring my baby, using IP webcam on my phone and tinycam monitor on nexus7.

Chrome for everyday browsing, Firefox beta does flash I think.
You have to find flash apk yourself though, I never need flash.
Try all popular browsers and decide for yourself. I did, and I stuck to chrome.

My 73 year old dad is a proud new owner of a new Nook HD tablet. I am not sure if the gift was a mistake for him because it's just too big a leap of technology at this point. He just asked me, what is WiFi? Lol. I also unfortunately bought this with very little knowledge myself of nook and their OS, so that doesn't work in our favor either.
I still think there's going to be at least a few things he'll be able to do on it that will make his life better. My main thoughts are: reading, playing bridge, checking email, Facebook, browse the web. Any other easy things he "should" do on it, I would love to hear.
Since I won't be able to help support this very much after I set it up for him, I am wondering what experienced users on this tablet recommend doing with it visa vi setup? Should I leave it stock or flash an android ROM to it? Whatever is going to function the best and not cause him to deal with ANYTHING he might have to troubleshoot is what I think would be best for him. He's obviously going to be confused at times, and I just want to be able to show him how to do as many basic things as possible that keeps him using the device and makes it something useful for him.
Any advice at all greatly appreciated, since I don't own a nook myself educating me to help him will go a long ways for him too.

Honestly, if your dad is not tech savvy then I'd suggest leaving it as stock. It's a perfectly fine tablet as is for an entry-level use, certainly enough to read, check e-mail/Facebook, browse web, etc.
Plus if anything goes wrong with it, then he can always take it in to a B&N store and they can troubleshoot for him without any confusion about ROMs and such.
My 70 year old mother-in-law has a Nook HD Plus and has no issues now. She was a bit confused at first but now she gets it. She rarely asks me anything now. I left her stock she doesn't know it can run faster and if there are any issues I don't have to worry about her walking into a Barnes and Nobel with a rooted system.

I set one up very recently for a friend's dad who had suffered a stroke . I've set up countless Android tablets but not a nook before. I basically left it stock but I installed Nova launcher prime as I didn't like all the junk BN had put on the home screen. I didn't like the carousel and I didn't like that you could not create folders on the screen. After installing the launcher, I left on the home screen a five day HD weather widget, an internet folders containing Chrome and one other back up browser, Facebook, email, radio and you tube. a second folder with various type of games. Third folder with reading apps which could access his e-books. There is nothing else he need to know about. Showed him to press the n button should he find himself in a strange page or settings.
