Death grip - signal loss - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I just watched 2 videos on youtube, both showing signal loss when the palm of your hand touches the lower left corner of the phone.
Can anyone confirm if this is true??

No signal loss on my phone.

what do you think this is, iphone?

Just tried, no signal loss.

Just tried it - holding it in that corner as well as covering both the top and bottom parts of the back (which are the antennas). No signal changes.

You're holding it wrong!

There is slight signal loss on my One (Sprint) when my palm covers the bottom left corner of the phone, but I wouldn't call it a "death grip." For me, it's the difference between 5 bars vs. 1-2 bars.

Anyway, anyone who holds their phone in a "death grip" during normal use is a bit off. Here, I need to make a phone call; let me hold the phone just as tight as humanly possible. Please...

Try holding with your left hand for 5 seconds.
That's what I noticed. From 5 bar to 1

Watch it for yourself. This is the third video with this problem. Seems like all sprint devices have this problem

Was holding it now for like 20 seconds in my left hand and no, no signal lost. Still 5 bars
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

Might send mine back. My signal rose from 3 to 4 bars when i just covered the bottom of my phone. Also, i l placed it on a table and looked at it for 5 minutes and it fluctuated from 3 to 4 to 5 and back without me touching it. I am so disappointed with HTC right now...
In other words, no death grip here. If you have a problem with your phone, send it back. It does not seem to be a widespread issue.
Currently interchangeably using HTC One, BBZ10 and Note 2

That's good to know. I think its only sprint devices then.
Anyone from developer edition can test it out?

Tried again, still no change. Perhaps it is specific to the Sprint model.

mine singapore's singtel set, no problem

I can confirm this happens on the T-Mobile version too, but it doesn't actually appear to have any effect on phone calls, at least in my experience. I haven't dropped any calls, nor have I noticed a change in sound quality. On a somewhat related note, I can also interfere with Bluetooth audio streams simply by putting my entire hand over the top right corner near the FFC, though it obviously looks wrong and feels awkward to do so.
It's a known fact that many phones have signal attenuation when you put your hands on them in certain places. If it's that big of a deal, you can always invest in a good Bluetooth headset to keep your hands off it.

Oh great just what we need more OCD driven videos.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium

Tried it with mine - was -83dBm on the table and fluctuated between -83dBm and -79dBm in my hand.

Just tried it, mine is completely fine. . .

This will happen on most, if not all phones. If you cover an area it needs to be usually exposed to maintain signal, what do you expect?
When it happened with iPhones however it was funny to see everyone who hates iPhone's making a big deal out of it...

Test Proves I-Phone 4 Reception Issue Is No "Illusion"

I hate to defend the iphone but....
Most phones have similiar issues. Even on the nexus we all love. I lose 3G/cell signal all the time when I cover the lower half of my phone. This is something common on all nexus unless you have 100% awesome signal.
I think this is why this has not been discussed on this part of the forum
1) This is supposed to be about the Nexus One, not the iphone
2) All of us N1 owners know the N1 also has radio problems.
That being said, I'll still say the nexus is the overall best phone there is.

I agree with everything you said, including the last part about the overall superiority of the N1.
table: -75dBm
hand in front of me: -85dBm
next to my ear: -79dBm
That's my N1
But the news is for iPhone not for Nexus so not relevant dor this part of the forum (or any else i guess)
I dont know why people keep saying "this is common among all phones"
No its NOT.
1. You are never in direct contact with the actual antenna on other phones.
2. It usually takes a full grip to replicate this on other phones. Even then loss is not as significant as you are still merely muffling a signal not physically shorting the antenna process.
The iphone merely needs the gap bridged for it to dramatically lose signal to the point of dropping calls almost instantaneously.
The issues the N1 had were getting and maintaining a fix on 3G signals. A far cry from dropping endless calls because you were holding it wrong.

No, there are plenty of reports of a dramatic drop in signal strength when you cover the back of the N1 with your hand. Not exactly the same thing as iPhone 4, but still a signal issue caused by antenna placement, so definitely in the same ballpark.

Again, it's not even close to the same issue. On the N1, you can muffle the antenna a bit; on the iphone 4, you can actually electrically short it out.

This smacks of rationalization to me. People report dropped calls as a result of how they hold the phone. Whether it's because the antenna is "muffled" on the N1 or "shorts" on the iPhone, the result is the same from the user's perspective. In fact, the iPhone issue is arguably less of a problem because you can solve it with a case. I love my Nexus One, but I don't think we do ourselves any favors as consumers by rationalizing the phone's shortcomings.
Ummm...how is this related to Nexus One general?

The issue with the iPhone isn't that it has signal attenuation when held normally. All phones do indeed have that problem. The issue is the amount of attenuation. The iPhone 4 loses about 20 decibels of signal when held normally, the N1 loses 5-10 decibels, which doesn't mean that the iPhone loses 4 times as much signal. Decibels are an exponential metric, 10db loss is a tenfold increase/decrease, 20db is a hundredfold increase/decrease. If you use the "death grip" on the iPhone, you might see a 30db loss, yeah that's 1000x. That's why a lot of people didn't even realize that phones did this until now, the iPhone is particularly bad at this phenomenon.
There's a workaround to avoid losing signal when talking, and it's applicable with ALL phone with antenna at the bottom:
Just hold the phone top part when talking and keep hand off the bottom, but it's not possible when doing internet or messaging, or email.
When holding the phone for messaging, try to spread out fingers.
Sounds like Apple is trying to start a new FAD LoL...hope it doesn't catch on!

which is ridiculous and something a consumer shouldnt have to do. Its very annoying to not be able to hold my phone how it naturally feels to while watching/listening to anything streaming.
its really not that hard to fix this, just make a vertical antenna that way you address the heath hazard of an antenna next to your ear, and still not sacrifice much signal.
Wow, another feature that Apple will try to pass off as being first. HTC was the first to have dropped signal, dammit!!
(Tongue in cheek, guys. I realize the seriousness of the iP4's reception woes is much worse than the N1's.)

There are reports of a 20dBm loss in signal strength from the way you hold the Nexus One:
If you go to Settings -> About Phone -> Status you will see a display for "Signal strength". When my phone is sitting on the desk, the signal stays consistent. However, the second I touch my phone, the signal drops up to as much as -20 dBm. I am able to replicate this test every single time, whether the signal is incredibly strong or weak.

Google's "solution" was basically the same as Apple's -- i.e., hold the phone differently.
Weird, my Nexus One is just fine...........................
WRONG FORUM. Who cares.
Thread moved to OT.
what i specifically want to know is WHY is the nexus' antenna so sensitive compared to other phones. all my nokia phones would lose signal too when covering the antenna, but it seems like nokia and other phones use a moving average to calculate signal strength, over a period of the last 10 secconds or so. so that when the signal is blocked, it takes a few seconds to even start to drop. but the nexus almost seems to give dBm in real time, with no moving average at all. cause the dBm can drop intantly when blocking the antenna.
this is why i try to say that HTC just uses different bars, but the signal reception is no worse than other phones. it just shows in real time.
anyway i was at ATT store yesterday, and all 4 iphone 4's drop from 5 bars to 1 bar just by touching the lower left side. not even squeezing, just lightly pressing it. all 4 units. so what are these new phones doing with antenna that causes them to be so sensitive?
also, about the nexus, we have to think that because the nexus is only 9mm thick, the internal antenna is only seperated from our hand by barely 1 mm or so. so we too are detuning the antenna. its not a short like iphone, but close to it.

[Q] Signal strength / reception quality?

Hi all,
The HTC One S is well known for bad reception issues outside urban areas.
We constantly miss calls on 4 HTC Ones which were upgraded to all major ROM versions since 5.2012.
Other / older phones (HTC, Nokia, Motorola...) are always reliable in this area.
I wonder if the great aluminium design of the new One has similar issue?
Have you lucky people with pre-series phones noticed any strengths/weaknesses in reception?
Thanks

Tried out GPS and call qaulity yesterday, outdoors in noisy street and indoors in three store no issues what so ever phone is loud and clear and no issues with reception.
Have you tried holding the whole body on the upper part and lower part? Because that's the grip of death the iphone encounters. It is ok if you hold it normally but if you grip it fully on the upper part then that's when the problems comes in.

Was your experience in the city or outside, where the next GSM Base Transceiver Station is many miles away?

I am holding it in a way the GSM antenna in the lower part of the body is not covered.
Otherwise calls are not even possible where I live.
It's locked to GSM as G3/HSDPA is not strong enough.
Placing the phones on the table is enough to miss calls quite often.
No other phone we've ever owned has such a bad GSM/G3 reception in the 800 MHz band.

Me and My GF both had the one S aswell and never had any reception problems, infact had more reception problems with the GS3/Note 2
open the phone cover, there you can see 6 connector, pull them out a little, less than 1 mm. it might help. there is video on that on YouTube.

[Q] HTC One wifi problems

Hi,
I've noticed my HTC One's wifi is really weak. I barely have full bars from my wifi and worst when I am not in the same room as the wifi router I would lose connection altogether.
This only happens with the HTC One as I have tested this with different devices. Has anyone experienced the same problem?
Thank you

Don't grip it? The problem is when you conductively bridge the two metal pieces or you completely cover the emitter/receiver portion. The first is unique to the phone, the second is a universal issue because WiFi is easily absorbed by watery bodies.
Edit: If you hold it so that the right side of the phone is the bottom in portrait, don't cover the top left metal area. (Looking at the back, top left metal strip) That is where the antenna is for WiFi, and there is no other antenna for it.

Actually that part of the phone is easy to avoid gripping but i would prefer HTC to put in a secondary Wi-Fi antenna in the bottom like for cellular.

I think HTC had no choice here, it is very hard to make it work. The same issue is present on the iPhone 5, if you cup the bottom WiFi/BT reception drops like a rock.
Easiest solution is to use a case and never worry about it again, but even then, 2.4 GHz is the same frequency used for microwave ovens. Oil/water absorbs it very easily.

5Ghz only works well line of site. If there are walls etc you'll probably get better connectivity with 2.4. Try different channels. This device is much better than the One X+ as far as wifi. on the One x+ in regular 99% of the time grip it would drop wifi almost completely In my bedroom (4 bars wifi) Grip it and drops to 1 or none. With the One i still get 4 bars untouched but it only drops to 3 when i grip it. If i grab top left then it drops like the x+ did. Yes it has a grip issue but ive seen much worse.
My ONE has amazing wifi reception, I can finally use the wifi from my bedroom in other areas of the house which I couldnt do with any galaxy or nexus phone i've owned.

Hi, I want to buy htc one.i heard that its wifi drops signal a lot of times and when you turn on wifi then you have to get the sim out of your phone.is it true? And what do you think about htc one after using it?
Okay what metal piece we should stop covering ? I have a case and it worked fine now it's losing signal all the time but data works
Not every HTC One is created equally?
My wife, her son Ian, and I just bought three HTC One phones. Of the three, Ian's phone is the only one having troubles with 2.4 GHz in my house. It seems to work better with 5 GHz. But my wife's phone and my phone work fine with 2.4 GHz. I did have one problem though. Last night for a while mine could not connect at all until I reset the phone.
Using WiFi Analyzer I saw that Ian's phone was getting significantly lower signal strength.
Has anyone else see anything as specific as this?
John
Don't know if it is a problem of the router or the HTC One, so please help:
When I'm connected to wifi (only tried it at home at the moment) it sometimes have full bars and then suddenly drops to zero bars and disconnects (I didn't leave the room or move). A few seconds later it's connected again and shows full bars. 10/20 minutes later - same as told.
My HTC Desire doesn't have this problem.
Is it hardware related or could it be the router (dual - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)? Is there something I can do?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Hmm, nevermind, problem solved. On phone I changed frequency to 2.4 GHz and ticked "best Wifi" (something like that) and now I got full bars and stable wifi.

To be honest, no. If it's a hissing sound you're hearing (which I haven't heard myself), I would take it back to Sprint and tell them about it. Then get a replacement. I'm sorry if I sounded like a DB, but it's just that the phone really isn't anywhere near a problem as some people make it out to be. People over the on the EVO 4G LTE boards are saying it's hardly and upgrade, I almost wanted to ball my fist around my One and punch a hole through my monitor.

I agree, I just can't stand some people that act like the phone isn't as hyped up as it really is. This phone is HUGE for HTC, and everyone should really not nit-pick at not having a removable battery, or no SD card slot, or kick stand, or this and that. It's really all just trolling in my book.

I agree. The core functionality of the phone should work 100%. Mine works as it should, so I'm not complaining. But like I said, Sprint should be told about it, and it should be replaced if it bothers you.
But the overheating feel is a little overbearing at times when I'm holding the device, especially if it's on the charger at the same time

I got this phone on release day and I haven't experienced anything close to what I've read from other people about the build quality. I've been totally satisfied with the phone and its feature set. There has been times my phone has gotten hot but it happened with the evo3d too. When devices use as much power as these things demand of course there will be some heat. But overall the phone is well built and works flawlessly for me

True. When you compare it to other phones, it gets just as warm. The reason why you think it's really "hot" is bc it's aluminum, which is a good conductor. Keep in mind that when the phone is in cooler conditions, the internals will be much cooler than the insides of a plastic phone.

Right. And in the end I think it is a good thing. If the heat is dissipating through the metal case, the processor is staying cooler. Plus with my case on it I don't feel the heat as much now.

I 100 % agree with you. I just wish those people would stop trolling, it's going on for months.

Mine had quite a bit of hissing on the first day I had it (launch day). A couple days later it was gone. Maybe Sprint did something on their end?
I think my biggest issue right now is that bluetooth audio is distorted when I stream to my car. It's pretty much unlistenable.
The only other thing I can think of is that when I'm using headphones to listen to music and one of my alarms goes off, after the alarm is dismissed the music goes up to the alarm's volume level. Pretty painful when that happened.
Minor Issues Experienced So Far:
- Long gaming sessions make the phone incredibly hot, almost too hot, but not quite
- Sometimes pressing / holding Home button doesn't open Google Now ... or do anything
- Kind of difficult to use with one hand sometimes due to it's length and fact that it's top heavy
- Camera 'over-focuses' at night - Takes good night shots but sometimes will get stuck in a 'focus loop' for a few seconds
- Trying to switch to Swype takes some doing - It's in the notification bar but not in the Language / KB settings
- Annoying that unlocking the bootloader (rooting) erases all user data with no option to not do that
- Annoying auto-brightness for screen - Placement for the sensor for a righty is right under hand
- Confusing Camera Settings for Scene Types: Normal, Night, HDR. Night setting makes WORSE photos than Normal setting AT night.
- I miss the Motorola / Samsung options. Night, Twilight, Backlit, Inside Dark, etc.
- Last volume before mute setting is actually fairly loud, have to use touch interface to dial it in right
- Micro-USB slot is 'upside-down' compared to most others which have small end on top.
- Little slippery without a case
- Touch doesn't work with gloves at all - vs. my previous Droid Charge which did
Moderate Issue:
- No LTE in my area (yet), 3G gets terribad reception indoors (could be a Sprint thing in general).
Even with these minor issues - most of which can and probably will be fixed with software updates - I still love this thing. It's just unbelievably fast. The fact that it boots in under 10 seconds, the fact that I can run any game (ShadowGun and Real Racing 3 look amazing), and load it in seconds, is awesome. The IR blaster is probably one of the features I have used the most. From controlling a bar TV to my home, it's incredibly convenient. I also have come to love BlinkFeed and just about everything else. This phone gets attention in public for the screen and the beautifully engineered design. I love it.

This must be your first HTC phone. My EVO 3D, EVO 4G LTE and my HTC One all have the USB port positioned the exact same way. I've never really handled a phone other than HTC phones, so I don't know if Samsung has it the other way, or any other manufacturers.

Had a Droid X, and Droid Charge are like that for me.

HTC One M8 complaint thread.

I figure I make one thread where we all can voice our possible dislikes with this phone without having to create multiple threads with different complaints.

Why make a complaint thread?? If you don't like a phone get another one.

I love this phone. But you know with every great new device there's something to complain about. So why not just talk about it? Like I would of loved the settings button to be on the bottom rather than pulling down the top bar.

not being able to use data while on a call is my only complaint. great phone other than that

That's definitely sucks. Unfortunately that's something we going have to get use to.

Complaints:
* The M8's screen is almost impossible to see when wearing polarized sunglasses. This problem is only when you hold the phone in portrait mode. In landscape mode it looks fine. This is a common problem with LCD screens, but there are steps HTC could have taken to eliminate it, such as using a 45 degree extinction angle, or using a compensating film.
* Button placement: I do not like M8's button placement. I find it hard to turn the phone on or off without inadvertently pressing one of the volume buttons. I greatly prefer M7's recessed volume rocker to M8's non-recessed rocker.
* THIS MAY BE FIXED WITH THE NEW RADIO FIRMWARE IN THE 1.54 UPDATE: My biggest complaint is the fact that the phone often takes over an hour to connect to LTE even when there is a STRONG signal.
My complaints:
1. The power button being on the top of such a large phone is pretty annoying. I came from the GS3, which had the lovely side power button. This is something that I will get used to though. It'd be nice if they made a gesture to lock the phone too.
2. Since the latest update, my mobile signal has been poor. Where I used to get LTE, I now get 3G only. My wifi signal is fantastic compared to the GS3, but the mobile internet is looking rough. If I don't see improvement, I may need to replace the phone to see if it can get better.
Everything else is just incredible. Even with these complaints, I freaking love this phone!

IDK, I can use call+data on 3/4G, it's just not supposed to be possible on spark, which I don't have in my area

No you can't.
Only way that's possible is if you're on wifi (obviously).
Here are mine, which I'm sure others have mentioned.
1) Size; I actually prefer the size of the M7 over this. It's hard to reach the power button as someone mentioned and the phone is very hard to hold without a case because it's slippery. It almost feels like I'm holding a gigantic EVO LTE. The m7 felt right in my hands. I was surprised because most of the reviews mentioned that it was easier to hold than the m7 due to the curved back. Using it with one hand is pretty tough because I'm so afraid I'm going to drop it.
2) The Gun Metal Gray definitely scratches very easy. I have a small scratch on the back of my phone already and I'm not quite sure how I got it since I baby my phone like my own kid. i was actually going to wait out for the silver version, but with Bestbuy price matching Amazon in conjunction with their $50 instant credit for people who registered their numbers, I felt like I needed to jump on it for $100.
3) Loss of data randomly (never happened on my M7); I understand there is only one antenna and Spark phones rely on CSFB and that it will eventually be fixed.
No other complaints other than those 3. Love the SD Card, Boomsound Speakers, Camera (Yes I do) and the amazing battery life. I no longer have to worry about running out of juice for the entire day.

Ya, you're right I can't do it on this phone, could do it on my old one though
Apparently unlocking the bootloader prevents you from redeeming the Google Drive bonus. I still bought the device so why no freebie?
Still glad to be s off though.

I'm very tempted to buy this phone on my upgrade but I know that I do not want to cover it up with a case. My hands are rather grippy on smooth surfaces so I find the gunmetal gray to have a perfect finish. What I want to know is how scuffable the finish is on this phone. I only ever keep it in an empty clean pocket or laying back-down on my desk which is usually clean. Will I have an issue with tiny scratches accumulating in the clearcoat?

I've gotten a couple light scratches and I baby my phone. Not sure how I got them. Never had a problem on the back of the m7.
Anyone else's earpiece crackle during a call or when listening to music? I've been through 2 of them that have been that way. Not sure if its supposed to be this way or what. It's not on the bottom speaker, just the top one.

My Observations
I got this phone as a precursor to replace my 5S, if the iPhone 6 doesn't have a 5" screen. I've only had it one day so far my observations are:
The phone takes a long time to load web pages and play youtube videos
The placement of the buttons is a bit awkward.
The Knock feature doesn't work all the time, nor do the swipe to unlock.
I must've gotten a factory defect, the screen is starting to come off in the upper right hand corner where the front camera sits. How that happened? I couldn't tell you.
I have the Sprint Spark Icon in the notification bar (Spark is in Orlando) but the switch between networks is sometimes slow.
Sometimes to get rid of notifications, I have to reboot the phone. Some icons will stay in the notification area even after the app is closed or I clear it.
Coming over from iOS, not being able to quick scroll to the top of a page is frustrating to say the least. The only place that works is in Blinkfeed, which is pretty cool, IMO, thus far.
Twitter apps for Android suck (can't knock the phone for that though.)
I hate the loud beep you get in your ear when ending a call if you're wearing a Bluetooth.

My only gripe is the stupid HTC in a space not used for anything else. If we are dropping capacitive buttons, give us more screen in that spot... not a space for logo.
