YouTube audio out of sync / simple games lagging & other issues - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings XDA users! As you can see, this is my first post on this forum. I have registered here in order to get some answers from other users of the HTC One concerning some problems that I have experienced. I have been using the device since more than a week now, and these are the issues I've come across so far, so please let me know which ones of these you are experiencing as well:
1. YouTube audio / video out of sync
I noticed this the first time I used YouTube on my HTC One. Lip sync simply looked horrible while watching some videos. To test if you have this issue as well, you should try something like this video where it can clearly be seen in action: Link (Since I cannot post links due to below 10 post count, simply search YouTube for "BBC HD audio sync test")
2. Simple games lag / do not play smoothly
The first game I tried on my HTC One was Doodle Jump. It's a very simple game, and before purchasing the One, I have read about other recent HTC smartphones having problems with such simple games because some HTC devices don't know how to properly use their GPU/CPU in situations where games don't have high demands. If this is still the case with the HTC One, and not just some issue with my own, it is simply unacceptable. After all, a new flagship smartphone should not have any issues when playing the most simple of games that any old android smartphone can do perfectly.
Note: I have already tried to cure both of these problems by doing it with / without power savings enabled. I have also tried with / without Beats, Bluetooth, NFC and so on. Nothing helps.
Please let me know if you are experiencing these two issues on your HTC One as well.
Other issues and annoyances I have noticed, that come to mind right now:
3. Blinkfeed share bar at the bottom of the screen is very annoying, and apparently can't be removed at all. It's doubly annoying because sometimes you can hit this bar when trying to use the back button.
4. 3-dot-menu bar at the bottom of the screen in some apps. There even used to be a built-in feature in the setting menu to get rid of this, but HTC seems to have removed this in the final software versions, for questionable reasons.
5. Video camera settings such as 60-FPS-HD or slow motion keep resetting themselves each time the screen gets locked and go back to "Normal".
6. Audio issues (cracks / pops) when using YouTube (maybe other apps as well). This happens especially often with Beats turned on, but I have also heard it happening with Beats off.
7. Odd volume jump that happens around 80% volume when increasing volume while streaming music via Bluetooth. (Volume actually goes down instead of up, and the next step after this sounds much louder than just 2 "clicks" more.)
8. Wifi reception gets a lot worse when covering the upper side of the device with my hand. And by covering I mean holding it normally in landscape orientation, I'm not intentionally trying to smother the signal. This is quite noticeable in areas where the signal is not that strong to begin with, as I've experienced multiple times that I've choked my wifi signal by simply holding it that way to watch some YouTube videos. The wifi bar can jump from 2-3 bars to just the dot by doing this.

I am rather disappointed to see this thread buried on page 3 already without any replies at all. All I asked for is a simple yes-or-no answer if your device also exhibits un-synchronous YouTube playback and/or unsmooth Doodle Jump gameplay.
So I guess this either means that I am the only one experiencing these problems and should promptly return my phone to get a properly working One, or it means people here simply do not notice these problems or accept to overlook them.
(By the way, the Bluetooth volume oddity seems to have been a randomly caused bug, as it was working fine again this afternoon)

I'm having the same issue with YouTube. It's basically unusable, the sound and lip sync gets progressively worse. Tried wiping the app data, re-installing YouTube, disabling Beats. Still no luck, this is the only beef I have with an otherwise excellent bit of tech. I tried the test videos and it looked spot on.
If I watch the same videos on my Asus Infinity there is no problem, so it's definitely the phone. I'm pretty much out of ideas.

YouTube audio / video out of sync
is indeed very horrible.....

ive never experienced anything like that, are you guys running stock rom?

For me, it's everything BUT YouTube. Games, apps, anything, there's about a 1/4 second delay between the on-screen action and when I hear the accompanying sound. Audio sync is one of my pet peeves, so this drives me absolutely crazy. I can only assume there's some kind of processing going on with the audio that's causing it, but damned if I can figure out what it is. The only audio switch I've seen to turn stuff on and off is Beats, and that has no effect on the latency.
I'm running stock ROM. Friend of mine with a ROMd unit says his doesn't do it.

I'm also having issues with the YouTube...

New 1.93 ROM disappointments

Hi all
I've succesfully updated to the new 1.93.XX ROM, I agree it's faster but I'm a little disappointed. The TouchFlo 3D menus transitions are not as cool anymore. For instance when you navigate through the menus with your finger acroos the screen (not using the slide menu in the bottom) the menu sections don't flow anymore, they just disappear and fade in instead.
Other than that I don't have much to complain about, but I just wanted to check if it's like this for you guys as well.
Has anybody else found any other disappointing "improvements"?
Cheers
as i have understood it, the transitions you mention was there to "hide" the lag in the previous ROM, and it's not needed in the new because of the speed increase.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421311
Try using swots new ROM. It retains the animations yet apparently its much faster .
The Diamond is really disappointing me these days. I too am on the latest official (UK) ROM.
Some of my problems..
Battery Life - absolutely terrible if you use the phone for business means and push email. I dont leave BT or WIFI on and still the battery lasts no longer than around 12 hours
Alarm - the windows mobile alarm simply doesnt ring if you recieve an email or notification before the scheduled time. Its useless and has failed to wake me on a many a occasion
Reminders - for some reason dont pop up on the screen. You have to manually tell it to via sounds/notifications in settings, and even once you have done that, the Diamond some how reverts back to default settings automatically and the reminders fail to display again!
Answering calls - If your phone is docked in the official cradle and you tap the answer button when reciving a call before you take the phone off the cradle, it will reject the call regardless.
Opera - no flash and no way to click on a youtube clip and watch it. Why cant it operate like iphone and launch the you tube app when you click on a link to a clip on the webpage??!!
Activesync/Push/MS Exchange - loses sync sometimes and you have to softreset or manually launch activesync and hit the sync button... why??!
A2DP - doesnt work at all, it should be REMOVED as a listed feature. Im listening to music on a tube train via A2DP - I hit overground, I recieve a call, I answer via my headset. I end call, music continues playing THROUGH MY PHONE SPEAKER! Its embarassing and happens all the time. Useless. My old HTC Touch never acted that way.
Camera - Absolutely useless. We have a 3 Megapixel autofocus camera, yet the iphone still produces better quality images. Diamonds photos are fussy, soft and undefined - they lack sharpness and clarity. some say its because of the plastic lens cover, I see it as poor design.
GPS - works fine... apart from the LAG, which defeats the purpose of turn by turn navigation.
Its these annoying problems that are seriously pissing me off and will probably tempt me to the dark side come next generation of phone.
oh dear
I'm using Duttys latest rom..
I like the phone but I can give you my view on your points.
Battery life lasts me a day with pretty heavy use .. I expect to charge it and I'm not normally that far from a charger.. charges quickly
Ive never had a bad experience with the alarm. I will try and emulate what you said though.
reminders.. they sound and I can see them.. in fact it speaks them at the moment too
Answering calls. I don't use the dock but sometimes it does drop calls when i go to answer them ..
Opera No flash.. so whats new there then? You tube.. I like the you tube app.. but to be honest if i wanted something to watch you tube on id probably have gotten an Iphone
Active sync. I have never had a problem with active sync with any phone.. All my mail for my phone is collected/sent via orange so mail is no issue for me.. as for synching files.. no problems at all.
A2DP .. sorry but its not even an issue I don't listen to music through it. I do use bluetooth devices though and have no problems.
Camera.. Now I do use that and I like it. Its a good practical camera.. that takes adequate pictures.. except in poor light when its rubbish..
GPS.. mine doesn't lag and works much better than my old M700 and looks miles better
Dont get me wrong.. I dont live in Diamond Utopia .. but for what I need and use it for.. (on the move office related stuff, phone calls and sat nav) Its great.. it cost me nothing and it looks good too. I think its very good.
Now if i'd wanted a phone to play music through and watch videos on Id have probably gone to something else.
For what I need/want this phone hits the nail on the head.
Ive also grown to quite like the rom development side too.. !

[Q] To N1, or Not To N1: Help w/Multitouch

I've been obsessing over the N1 since launch. Android is super neat, and unlocked phones rock. The only thing that really held me back from the purchase was the multitouch issue. I could easily see having to reset my screen with a lock cycle would drive me crazy. That said, I love the idea of the N1, and wish to escape my iPhone prison.
I recently purchased a Galaxy S phone, but am annoyed by the lack of support (saw this coming) and non-functioning locational services. The GPS and Compass are totally and utterly busted. Sadly, Google stopped selling the N1 on the day I decided to order one. However, I have been given a second chance, by purchasing the dev phone (which I am now considering).
So, let's make this like ripping off a bandage. Have mercy, internet. I have questions that require honest answers. I'm sorry if you've heard it all before, but this kind of information is annoyingly hard to dig up. Lightning Round, Go!:
Is the multitouch problem with the N1 (inverse axis swapping when two points cross) still present with 2.2?
Do any custom ROMs, apps or tweaks solve this issue? I read that the Moto Droid had a software setting ticked that allows proper multitouch (a sort of software hack), that google had not opted to enable by default? Sounds a bit silly to me, but what's the deal?
Does your screen still lose track of your fingers (inputing the wrong characters on the keyboard), causing you to lock cycle your screen to reset the digitizer?
Are the touch-buttons difficult to use?
A fellow N1 owner I met told me that his phone showed no signs of the multitouch 'bug', when using 'Multitouch Vis Test'. He said he was running the Modaco ROM. Is it true that something in this ROM fixes the multitouch problem?
Thank you, Princes of Internet.
Personally i dont experience any multitouch issues on my n1. Im running stock froyo 2.2. I have only had to re-lock my screen once and it never happened again. The capicative buttons below the screen take a bit of time to get used to at first it might take you a couple of tries to register a click but a few hours of use you get the hang of it.

Thanks for the reply.
Would you mind taking the 'Multitouch Vis Test' app for a spin, to see if the problem is gone, or if you just don't notice it?
If the issue is gone, would you mind making a youtube vid of it?
The multitouch on the n1 will not be "fixed" unless google/htc decided to use different hardware. If you can live with a device that can only do pinch to zoom, but not true multitouch, then the n1 is fine.
Honestly at this point, I'd hold off until you see the rest of HTC's lineup that's coming up before december.

1) It was possibly noticable in 2.1, in 2.2 in months now I havn't see it once. You can see with the visualiser you really have to know how to force it to get it to go, its just not something which will occur with correct commands you'll be doing.
2) Its down to the hardware, I'm not aware of any custom ROMs which have anything/anything significant.
3) The only time I EVER get this is with beta super bundles of ROMs, which is either the fault of the ROM, something going skitz in dalvic, how I installed it, or just a self generating bug. All of which are easily fixable. However if you were to stay with stock or more tested ROMs, you'd literally never see this.
4) For me they just work, at the start yes they wouldnt act the same a touch screen, but now they'll act like I want maybe 99% of the time. Sure friends using it to start with have to get used to it, but its not 'broken' if you will. The only thing I will mention is if your using it in weird orientations, there is a chance of hitting the buttons [mainly search] without meaning to with parts of your hand.
5) Again, this problem ONLY shows up if you know how to 'break' it. With 2.2+ its really hard to do it if you handed the phone to someone who's never used it before, because also again you wont be doing any commands which would conflict with the limitations, so you have to be misusing it in the first place to get the bug.

Agree with this.
Multitouch is completely crap on the n1. I loved it otherwise, yes every now and again it goes wack and registers the wrong thing... the capacitive buttons also suck and are hard to get used to... on Multitouch test its wacky and registers the wrong finger and won't register more than 2...
Great device, but galaxy is better.. I don't have any gps issues so can't complain about that.
No. No roms will fix the Multitouch issue. Nor make it any better.. if your into gaming with controls on the same axis forget about it, if ya want Multitouch keyboard forget about it...
I still have yet to ever experience the actual axis switch issue using this phone in real world. Sure the issue exists, but it just doesn't effect a single thing unless you use a certain game. But even that works fine, watch YouTube videos showing emulators on the nexus.
The point is, if you're looking for a reason to not get the nexus, The axis switch issue is not the reason that should sway your decision.
I recently came from an iPhone and I haven't noticed any difference in the multi-touch screen (except maybe in the typing on occasion, which I just attributed to my big fingers). I'd say for a good 95%+ of what you would do on the phone you can't tell any difference between the iPhone or N1 multitouch.
With the touch buttons on the bottom of the screen... Sometimes I hit one while typing, which takes me back to the home screen, but since the N1 has true multitasking all I have to do is reopen the app. A minor inconvenience. Or I could just type in landscape mode and not have any trouble at all.

Games like toonWarz or nova will mess up. Has the controls on bottom right and shooting on bottom right. So when your running using the left controls and shoot real quick with the right, it'll now wig out and keep shooting even when you let go and the dude will walk a different way be cause now the sensor thinks your touching in a different spot..
Now you can let go of the left finger then shoot but when ya need precision in some shooting games you will be dead if you do that....
Pinch to zoom is fine and emulators with controls on the top and bottom vs just the bottom ( same axis), but for games like nova, heavy gunner, modern combat, ps1 emulator (unless it has opposite axis controls) which mine don't, took Warz, etc. It will not work properly ....

this is a good explanation of what is effected. if you're a big gamer then consider it, but things like pinch to zoom in the browser, maps, pics, works just as great as ever.
Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Coming from the Galaxy S, I imagine I will miss a few things. One of them being: media playback and overall storage.
I guess with the N1, I'd need to find a non-bootlegged 32GB microSD card. But my other question would be: is there an easy way to play all of the content that the Galaxy S can handle, or is the GPU in the Samsung phone so much better that the N1 can't keep up?
I really like that about the SGS: I just drop movies (mp4, xvid, divx and so forth) onto the internal ROM and they play without issue. Media capabilities are very nice.
Does the N1 play lots of videos like this out of the box? If not, is there a decent media application?
Also, about HTC's other devices: I'd love to wait, but I'm worried that the newer phones won't have nice accessories. The N1 has that awesome car dock, that I would use all of the time. The SGS doesn't have any accessories like that, and it makes me sad. Most of HTC's N1 follow-up lacked similar docks and cradles.
If I return this SGS (likely), I will probably be jumping to the N1, just for that 'official' feel of it (very sturdy, solid first-party accessories).
You have no idea how sad I was, when Google announced they were giving up on creating their own phones. Hate them all you want: but Apple really has that system (solid build, quality integration / lack of fragmentation) nailed. I was really hoping that Google could bring that unification to Android with their own branded devices.
Loving Android, though. Never going back to iOS.
Anyone saying the n1 doesn't suffer from multitouch issues is sadly mistaken. The one thing that bugs me about the n1 is the touch screen issue. You won't be able to play games like nova, or certain games on emulators (when using dpad plus buttons that are at the same level it has issues) and it does have issues when crossing the axises.

everyone said the issue exists it just doesnt show up unless you...play....games. otherwise its a non issue.
The N1's touchscreen is totaly crap. There is a thread about touchscreen issues at oficial forum. It has more than 2000 posts explaning all problems of nexus one touchscreen. Check it out.

The gpu is OK. But definitely a lot less powerful than the sgs, you will notice in movies, live wallpapers and especially games... there's a decent video player called rockplayer that plays a lot of stuff like avi and xvid , but its not ad good as the sgs player ...
Put it this way, either stay sgs and have a not so well navigation but awesome everything elsex or go nexus with good GPS but a old touch sensor that will hardly recognize both fingers on anything other than pinch to zoom.....
The only real world scenario i have encountered the axis switch is when you do a pinch on an album in the gallery to have it flick through them, it switches often when doing that.
Nexus One multi-touch sucks for games. I've tried some fancy gameloft games that req two fingers on screen, or PS & gameboy emulators that req this and it drives me insane. Can be so frustrating for gaming and is the only thing that I find a let down for this device. I wish I knew before I purchased it because the gaming although not the only thing I brought it for is something that I thought would be cool on my phone.
Simply put, don't get the N1 if mobile gaming is important to you. I'm not talking about simple single tap games, but the intricate ones (PSX Emu, EA Sports, Gamesloft, etc). If you could live without it, the touchscreen is fine for regular day to day use.
Or just root and carry your favorite bluetooth game controller. I have a mini bt keyboard that works great for emulators

[Q] Video Playback Issue

Hey guys, need a bit of help...
Been using the Z a few days now, and I'm having 2 issues...
WiFi and Bluetooth won't work together at the same time, one knocks the other off whenever I'm browsing and listening to music on my Bluetooth stereo... In the ratio of about 5:1 for WiFi:Bluetooth like...
That's one issue that's a little annoying.
Another is that video playback over WiFi is broken... If I load up a video on the YouTube app, depending on video length, the video normally freezes around the 40 second mark. If I load a video up in my browser, more of the video will load, but never the full video, could freeze 3 minutes in, 5 seconds in, but never fails to freeze.
I've reverted to stock YouTube app, cleared cache, didn't solve a sausage.
I haven't gotten to the end of a single video since I bought the device.
EDIT: Above issue is most likelyan android wide YouTube issue, if the comments on Play are anything to go by.
And that's on top of the Bluetooth/WiFi clashing that I mentioned above.
Not what I expect from a quad core device with 2GB ram like! Any ideas? Faulty handset? Factory reset? Return the handset? I've never rooted or used custom firmware ;so don't really know how to go about it, open to any suggestions to get the best out of the hardware...
Thanks in advance guys.
WiFi/Bluetooth issue
Seems the YouTube issue is an android wide issue, sorry for bringing it up.
Just leaves the Bluetooth/WiFi clashing issue where they keep knocking each other off while they're both being used.

I love HTC support

This is my 2nd HTC in a row and it's partially due to their support. Usually they just respond to email, but very quickly and not usually with a canned response but rather some useful information.
This time, they called me. I just got off the phone with them and the gentleman I was speaking to asked for as much detail as he could get out of me to address the several issues I've had with this phone.
This is why I love HTC

I had a nice little list, I didn't want to worry others that there are major issues and most of mine seem pretty isolated. but since you asked...
1. I've had a couple moments where it would be connected to wifi, but no activity - other devices on the network worked fine. (rare occurrence)
2. HDR images in brightly lit area (sunny afternoon) are over exposed - they seem to be aware of this but are telling people to adjust the exposure in image settings, which is grayed out in HDR mode (can be replicated on my phone every time, normal mode works fine)
3. Beats audio seems to go in and out over bluetooth, you can actually hear the effect turn off/on randomly but the setting shows it is on. (this is also consistent for me)
4. When calls are connected frequently in a short period of time (3 or more calls within a minute of the previous one ending), the audio is quiet and full of static and distortion. The other person hears me just fine, it's only my end. (seems to be regular occurrence)
5. Notifications aren't being sent through the headphone jack, but only the speakers - as a result, I can't hear the notifications. This is apparently normal that they still play through the speakers, but not normal that they don't also go through the headphones. (this can be replicated every time)
6. I periodically have wifi/3G/4G hand off issues. When switching from one to the other, it gets stuck with no data - as in no symbol in the notification bar and no activity. Airplane mode doesn't resolve it, still have to try switching data on/off. Only resolved by restarting the phone. (this is rare, but has happened several times in the almost 3 weeks i've had the phone)
7. Capacitive buttons not very sensitive
That's about it, they seem to only be aware of the capacitive buttons which they're looking into, but feel isn't an issue it seemed and about the hdr images being over exposed. The rest the guy I spoke to was unaware about and was probing pretty deeply about when/how/what with these issues. In regards to the HDR images being over exposed, what they didn't seem to know was that you couldn't adjust exposure or other settings when HDR is toggled. They apparently had been suggesting this to people previously.
Also, I asked if Sprint's version shipped with the fixes the European model recently received an update for. He said he wasn't sure and didn't have any information about the international versions.

I don't like this one myself, it's one of the few unavoidable breaking issues with the phone.
I see it too. Screen's been on, I've been connected to WIFI for a while... strong/excellent signal... then I see the WIFI icon disappear, maybe a message about "you can enable GSM roaming" and the app I'm in fails with no data connection being present and tells me to retry (or in the case of YouTube, it'll spin loading and loading indefinitely).
Then I might see 3G appear for a moment, then WIFI comes back. Then the phone will work again.

I am a long time HTC fan and I have experienced #1 and #6 more than once. It can be annoying but the build quality, support, and overlay of sense make it worth dealing with. Just a personal opinion I have. I think my wimax phones had far less problems than this one and my evo lte. Just a matter of them being new for sprint I guess. It may not even be HTC's fault. Something on sprints end. Who knows.

Note 7 bugs

I don't know how much longer I can put up with Samsung. I've been with them since the note 1 and it's so bad now. Everything from poor software to faulty hardware. GPS seems like its never worked correctly, no matter what they do. Updates cripple their phones. Their camera has certainly gone backwards in quality since the note 4 camera. The phone is lagging and slow always. Even in safe mode. The battery life is 3 hours at best, which is unacceptable. They force updates now, like Microsoft. They bundle things that you can't remove like facebook and instagram, but make you separately download their media players? That's backwards. The reception is horrible compared to other phones. Wi-Fi drops all the time, even next to my router. It has to warn me every single time I plug in headphones that it could damage my hearing. It has to notify me every single time I open the camera that location is either on or off. Charging is slow. Games shudder and lag no matter what I do. I can remove huge, useless apps like facebook. I can't root because of the locked bootloaders. I can't ever quickly see my new facebook messages because it has to now group multiple notifications and there is no way to turn off the "open chat heads" nonsense. The only thing mine doesn't do is over heat it seems like. That green battery ic9on update with the ultimate new UI completely compromised my Note. T-Mobile won't take it back without paying $50 either.
Samsung seems to have turned their backs on what their actual fans want in favor of being an iClone. Why does every single app and menu have a search bar now? Annoying. The drop down menu and notifications have severely dropped in quality since ICS. Does anyone else feel this way at all? It took me a long time to swallow my pride and get the note 2 way back when. Now I regret that I did. I can't find a way around these issues and no one will help.
