No data on 3G/E connections UK - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've jumped ship from an iPhone to HTC One. I am very impressed with the phone and although there may some tiny imperfections such as raised glass in one corner and slight gaps I am very happy. Mine is an FA33TW.
Anyway, my problem is with data connectivity here in the UK. I am with Vodafone and with an "H" connected I get great speeds but if it is ever on anything other than "H" (G, 3G, E) I get no data at all. With four full bars on 3G pages fail to load and I cannot check my e-mail. This happens in my house, outdoors, anywhere. I've looked on the internet and some say it's a Vodafone thing but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone is experiencing similar problems.
Cheers.

Prob a problem with the APN settings that Vodafone send down. Got to Settings > Mobile Internet > Access Point Names push the 3 dot menu and Reset to factory defaults. This is pull down the latest apn settings from Vodafone and hopefully fix your problem.

Not that

HI,
Thanks for the suggestion but that doesn't make any difference. I think it may be a problem with Vodafone's network as I found quite a few reports of an identical problem from other Vodafone UK users on the internet.
Any Vodafone UK users out there who can or cannot use 3G/E?
Cheers.

It's unlikely to be the Vodafone network otherwise it would affect all different types of phone as well. My Dad has a One X on Vodafone and has no problems on G/3G/H.
I still think it's a problem with the APN settings so I would suggest deleting the existing ones and then entering them back in manually (Use Google to find all the details.)

It's an odd one indeed. If I change the APN settings to anything other than the ones that Vodafone send me by text then I get no connection at all including H.
Right now I am watching (in the 4636 test page) the network type change from HSDPA to UMTS and back every 30 seconds or so. During this time I can't open an internet page at all. The notification bar shows 3G when UMTS and H when HDSPA. Neither let me open a page which is odd as I usually get a page with H. I have 5 full bars of signal strength all the time at the desk here.
What I have noticed in this test page is that when things stop working and my internet goes off is that another setting on the test page changes. In the location line there is LAC which usually has a number. Right now it says "ee" which I think means it cannot identify which node it is connected to which is odd as I still have 5 bars.
I think this may suggest the problem is to do with Vodafone's network in my area but if anyone can shed any light on this?

Got a new SIM from shop yesterday and have done all manner of resets to no avail.
I called Vodafone again just now and this time they claim they are doing work on one or two of the masts in the area. Had this problem for days now and last 2 times I phoned they said there was nothing going on.
So I think the LAC reading "ee" is because of a local mast/network issue and there's not much I can do but take their word and wait a few days.
Thanks for all the input!

3G Connectivity

I have an Orange branded TyTn II, and it never connects up to 3G even though the area i live in is well covered by 3G.
It mostly stays on G. It has changed to E (EDGE) on occasions but thats it.
I am from the UK and live in the yorkshire area.
Anybody got any ideas, or do i need to speak to Orange?
Thanks

Did u check the band settings in settings/personal/phone?
I went into the settings and it says it is set to Auto.
So i would presume it would pick upthe best signal?

Yes, at least that is doing in my case.
If that is the case any other ideas as to what it could be, and why the phone does not detect 3G?
Thanks

Where are u from?
Go to commanager and check if there is 3g turned on.
Did u try to search this forum?
Check my first post for location.
In comm manager there is no option for 3G, the only other choice i can see is data connection, and i cannot turn this on.
The Connection button is only used to disconnect active data connections.
I ,along with some friends, have also been having problems with Orange's 3G the last few days (I just came back to the UK so I'm not sure how far back the problem started - my friends say its been like this for at least a week). Not sure if it is related though. Oh, I live in Essex.

U can install advanced config tool, and there under menu u can choose the layout of the commanager(there u can put the 3G button on the screen). But it could be the above mention reason.
My problem just got more complicated.
Have a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2606166
Hi alt236,
The strange thing is my unit has recently come back from repair, and the main board has been replaced, under warranty, because of a dodgy ROM flash, and the 3G still does not work.
Weird.
Have you tried with a different SIM card?
Ok, I just had a chat with Orange support. Thankfully I got a pretty helpful guy
Anyway, according to him, Orange does not fully support 3G yet (at least not officially) as only about 50% of their masts are 3G enabled. This means that they get network congestion problems causing devices not to connect or drop connections unexpectedly.
His advice was to try to connect at different times of the day, and to force the connection on the Kaiser (not to set it to auto).
As I live in an area with 4-5 3G masts immediately around me (yes, I know I will die from cancer ) its a bit weird for me to be unable to connect, but I'll give it another go, at a unsociable hour (4 in the morning for example) and see what happens then.
He did ask me if I wanted to get my phone tested though, so if it doesn't work tonight, I'll send it off and hope for the best.
Nice One alt236, that would explain the lack of 3G.
I will give it a go at different times of the day and see what happens.
Thnx
No luck with my overnight test.
I passed by an Orange shop in town this morning and I spoke with one of the staff members there.
He proposed that before I ship it out, I should call 156 which is technical support for data enquiries (MMS/WAP & WEB/Email) and PDA's as they can see what my phone is actually trying to do when connecting and push updated settings to it.
I've tried calling a couple of times today, but the queue is too long. I'll post back when I have news.
i have the exact same problem, please let me know what orange have to say!

Intermittent GPRS / Internet issues.

Hi all,
I am using my Diamond on the UK Orange network and am having constant problems with the data connectivity over GRPS/3G. I have the phone synced to our Exchange server and also have an IMAP email account. It is set to use push but I often find the active sync in "waiting for network" mode rather than connected. If I keep hitting "sync", it will eventually connect and get my mail. I also find frequently that Opera times out and my IMAP mails fails saying it cannot "connect to server". Other times I can see the data connection restart or just go missing. I thought it was just my handset but after looking at a few collegues with Diamoinds, also on Orange, they seem to have similar issues. I'm going to bring this up with Orange but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.
We are all running the official Orange 1.93 Rom. (With us having replacement insurance I am not keep on flashing a non official ROM via HARDSPL. I've had four Diamond already due to various faults!)
Any advice would be appreciated. data is a business critivcal function for us and currently either Orange or the Diamond are letting us down.
Thanks!

YIPPY me 3!! i thought it was just me with 3G problems!!
i'm also having issues making video calls and surfing the www via the 3G on orange i have looked and looked for settings concerning 3G and it's coverage and i'm drawing a blank.
i've called orange too and was told there should be no reasons as to why i'm having so many problems with it, as all things were normal and correct as far as they could tell and my location nottingham has 3G masts all over infact i was in the middle of 3.
i was wondering what effect changing the network type would have from auto to GSM/WCDMA and changing the GSM/UMTS band from auto to one of the others listed (too lazy to type them all out )
are there any tweek tools out there which can booost the signal reception?? it does my nut in to see the 3G icon flash up and disappear as soon as i try to use any of the 3G functions..
I've been getting this problem the last week or so too. Very odd as it used to work perfectly.

Problem with Diamond GPRS
Hello all,
I live in Tehran, Iran and I use Irancell network operator.
GPRS is available in this network and I could use it on my old cell phones such as SonyEricsson W810 and Nokia N81. But now I have HTC Touch Diamond and when I try to connect it to GPRS it tooks a long time to connect, showing "Connecting" but after a while it cannot connect!
Everything is OK, all settings, etc. I called Irancell but they say your phone is not compatible our network!
I think there must be a way to use this networks GRPS on my Diamond!
The first reason that made my buy this cell phone was its Internet capabilities...
and I know this networks use the same settings as South Africa Network Operator.
If anyone can help, please tell me.
Thanks.
Sounds more like a network problem than a handset problem imo. I hope I am not tempting fate but I have not had any problems with data connections on UK T-mobile. That said, I get a weaker signal than I do on my old MDA Compact III handset so I think part of the problem could be the internal aerial
The bottom line for me is that the Diamond is a good but flawed phone. ****e battery life and too clever, compact, aestheticaly pleasing for its own good
You get a very quick GPS fix for Google maps and sat nag though
Apologies for going off at a tangent
I'm on Orange, also in Nottingham and have been having this problem for the last week or so too.
Must be a network problem. I have to tap on the "H" connection icon, tap Disconnect and try again.

I agree that it's flawed, the biggest problem being battery life. The next biggest problem is that TF3D seems to be incredibly poor and half-finished. My solution is not to use it, that way you have a normal old-style WM phone but smaller, sleeker and faster with a VGA screen. HTH
Im all good here

I have a orange Diamond and live in cheshire, i have never had one problem with connecting to data services, always get a strong signal.
My phone is running duttys rom 2.3a (there are newer virsions, time of writing 2.7rc2) and the latest radio BS14, That radio is very quick at switching from Gprs, 3G and HSDPA, it has also increased my signal strenth a tad. its worth looking at that.Other than changing these, knowing orange it could be there network, it happens from time to time.
i have considered flashing my phone with a new ROM but since i've never done this type of thing before, i'm worried i'll end up creating a nice looking paper weight and with all the ROM's out there how do know which is best??
wrong answer edit.

No 3G since FRF83

Any solution?
Only GPRS/EDGE does work, if 3G is available, it disconnects automatically until 3G isn't available.
Solution: Set to 2G-Only :-(
Anyone has the same problem?
I didn't have this problem with FRF 72.
Provider: Sunrise Switzerland
Radio: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Have you tried going into your phone settings from *#*#4636#*#* and setting it to wcdma only? I did that on mine not too long ago and no more dropping to edge for me!

does it lose complete signal? or does it show 3g still but just not doing anything?
Mine was working at first after flash. Then at about 2am it just kept trying to load then times out. Still shows 3g but just dont do anything. Im hoping its just tmobile messing with their towers... I dont see why it would work at first then not now..
The problem is, that i can only have a internet connection, when the phone is logged in into a gsm or edge network.
as soon as wcdma is available, the phone disconnects from the internet.
the signal is always available, but it looses the internet connection when it changes to 3G mode.
when the phone changes from 2G->3G mode, i see for 1s the 3G icon and then no icon will bi there.
when it changes back from 3G->2G, the EDGE/GPRS icon is visible again.

So Im hoping soon its working again for me... And I hope you as well figure it out.....
Thank you Good luck!
Had the same issue after update, did *#*#4636#*#* and noticed I was set to GSM only. Set it to WCDMA preferred and now it's good.

Thank you. Updated to FRF83 this morning and I've had a full 3g signal, just couldn't pull data all day. Could over edge. Sure enough, GSM only was selected.

I'm having the same issue on a non-rooted phone on T-Mobile. No 3G after the FRF83 update. Full bars of service and 3G displayed in the status bar. Dropping to Edge only works but there is no data with 3G.

Same issue here.
Switching to WCDMA preferred doesn't work for me though.....any help is welcome
I think it's a hardware problem with a lot of N1's.
Mine was ok the first 2 months, and later, 3g not working. This is driving me crazy ):
I have tried everything. Change the simcard, I did a reset of the data with my telcon, and nothing happens.
I've seen these problems on many N1's.
I hope google / htc release a fix for this problem.

how bout checking your bands in the service menu. so *#*#4636#*#* -> phone info -> press the menu key for more options -> select bands -> choose one appropriate for your region (ie "USA BANDS").
If all else fails do a factory reset by going to the settings -> privacy -> restore factory defaults.. of course do a backup/sync/whatever before just to make sure you can get all your apps back.
There's other ways to do a factory reset via the bootloader .. its under recovery and you press up volume or the trackball I think and you can just select all the clear/erase settings there and that should clear out everything on the phone's internal storage.
The factory reset worked for me (via bootloader) when I upped from update-1 to FRF50 and didn't have any data icon next to my signal strength. Could call out but couldn't get data.
Hope that helps.

Check your APN settings. Do a full factory reset from the bootloader. If nothing works you should call tech support again. Most 3g issues where you have issues with connecting are service/signal level related. I *****ed early about my 3g issues on tmobile and it was the network as they've pretty much gone away with improving the backhaul in my area for HSDPA+ or updates to the phone's radio.
HTC is really really really cool about swapping phones and repairing them. If you feel you have a nexus that has hardware issues call them. I did this 3 times already (one time for minor cosmetic issues with the refurb they sent) and I couldn't be happier about how willing they were to replace/repair the phone. It turns out I really didn't have any issues with them at all.. with any issues with hardware from the second refurbished phone. It was service or software related and I'm happy to say with updates/tmobile service improvements I couldn't be happier with this phone.

Thanks blisk, but the thing I don't understand is why Blackberry 9700 with T-Mobile bands, doesn't have problems at all ?
By the way, I rooted my phone , so the thing with the warranty it's complicated
I had it happen last night at work all night, but when i got home i checked my wife's tp2 and it also was doing the same thing so for levity wasn't the phone but tmobile. They started worming the same time also.... I think its tmobile.
Hello, I had the same problem with my imported n1. I'm using the tmobile version non rooted fully stock manually updated to frf83. I did a *#*#4636#*#* and selected wcdma only, rebooted and couldn't connect to my gsm network. Went in again and did a wcdma preferred, rebooted, and I works better, still changes fast to edge and G, but less often, I'm still trying it but I have high hopes its gonna be ok
Mmmm i did have problems with 3G too after pushing FRF83, but i found out that for some reason the APN settings weren't set correctly after the update. In my case the port setting after the proxy of the APN wasn't set, i changed to the correct value and it worked.
In conclusion, check your APN settings.
Just went from FRF72 to FRF83 and it's working fine.
I'm currently set to GSM auto (PRL) in the *#*#4636#*#* and I didn't change it to that after putting on FRF83.

Calling to UK o2 customers.....

Hi everyone,
I am trying to find out if anyone in the UK on o2 is able to see "3G" on there notifcation bar at the top?
I have been trying to find out for a while and have recently changed my sim card to a 3G as i have had mine for ages and was still an old 2g one!!!!!!
Since swapping I still only see G all the time while downloading data. Does it actually change to 3G when its available?
My current settings are:
o2 mobile Web Post Pay
APN mobile.o2.co.uk
Username: o2web
Password: password (i think!)
APN Type: Internet
Any help would be great
Regards Jim
Well when I'm inside I get HSPDA, I some times see the 3G logo, not often, but HSDPA is better anyway, when I have a decent signal or it drops to edge, but outside I always get it, It could be due to lack of a decent signal?
Make sure in Mobile Network Settings you have Network mode set to GSM/CDMA (Auto Mode)
My Internet settings are the same as yours
So you actually see a 3G logo then.........humm
I checked my network settings and mine are on auto as well.
Im wondering if there something wrong with my phone????
The only reason I say this is because my m8 is on 3 network and when were next to each other he can pick up a 3G signal and I cant. I find it hard to beileve 3 has better network in my area. Specially I always have a 5 bar signal.
Cheers for replying

Have you checked your signal on the o2 post code checker? I wouldnt bash three's signal thinking o2 is better! as 3 network share nearly all 3g sites with tmobile now and have really good coverage so dont use that as a president.
Also best to try your sim in a unlocked/o2 phone in an area that you know gets signal like the o2 shop. Also i didnt think any network needed new sims for 3g apart from orange with the strange usim!
I see both H and 3G.
Yeah i needed a new sim. Got mine about 4 years ago and was told i had an old 2G sim. I didnt know they updated sim cards !!!!!
Ill check the postcode checker on the website and will probably go to the o2 near me. Hopefully Ill pick it near there.
Im not overly bothered about having it where i am, just want to know it works ok.

Frequent Random Network Drops

I've seen a number of threads where people post about their device dropping network data connectivity, and needing a reboot to solve it.
My issue is a bit different. Occasionally (I've noticed it 3-4 times today) when I go to send a text (SMS) or to use a data enabled service like Hangouts, that my phone shows no bars at all.. not even just no data, but the bars are grey and there's a red x. I wait about 15 seconds and it reconnects, then another 10 seconds later, the data is live again.
Phone is a private sale and under 1 month old, and all the Stamina functions are off.. I do see that the "Queue background Data" is turned on, but I don't think this should effect, no?
Not sure what digits I should be looking at to know if this might be a hardware vs software issue.. build is listed as .93
Im no stranger to unlocking and flashing, but I've kept this stock cuz it's tight and I adore the battery life.
Suggestions?

I've seen a number of threads where people post about their device dropping network data connectivity, and needing a reboot to solve it.

check in settings in network and set your network to the one you use , like gm/wcdma /lte , maybe your phone is strugling to find 3g or 4g , try it , who knows it might solve the issue , ty
Been about a month since I posted, and I'm still experiencing this issue. I often thumb my phone on and it's not connected. I don't really mind waiting for the 30 seconds or so that it takes to jump back on the network, but it often means I miss calls, and since it's my business phone, it kinda bums me out to suddenly get a VM notification of a missed call even though it never rang.
Is there some sort of utility that I can use to monitor the network activity to see how frequently it drops, and for how long? I've looked into ones on Play but they don't seem to have a history, just something that shows what data up and down is currently being reported.
Sadly the only Sony store in my city (and I think the country - Canada) has recently closed for good, so I'm not sure how to go about warranty repairs...

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that you're not alone. I've been experienced the same thing on my Z3C. I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the MVNO I use doesn't support 4G LTE.

Interesting.. Your issue isn't just data, but a complete network disconnection? Im with Fido which is an MVNO under Rogers, but I thought they supported LTE. The issue also persists even on wifi

Yes, it seems to be a complete loss of the mobile connection. When I wake the phone I see gray bars and a red X on the signal strength indicator. Within seconds the phone re-acquires and the indicator goes to 2 or 3 bars. I have also seen it happen with wifi active. The frustrating part is that it doesn't seem to do it often enough to troubleshoot. I'll notice the problem maybe a couple of times a month and there's nothing obviously different about my usage patterns in those instances.
Mine does it at least a dozen times a day. I can only assume this as I frequently miss calls and at least 3-4 times a day I see it happen. =(
Same Problem
Randomly I have no connection at all but after a few seconds everything wents back to normal. Did not have this problem with T-mobile in Germany but with with O2 I have. With T-mobile I had LTE but with O2 I don't, so I guess that's the reason.
Interesting... I've disabled LTE and now have it on 3g/GSM. We'll see how it works moving forward, and I'll post again in a week. Stay tuned.
Service Providers
In the mobile network settings one can change the service provider manually. With LTE enabled my provider has three entries: LTE, 3G and 2G. Connecting two LTE fails, because my provider blocked it in my plan. Having LTE enabled, it often tries to connect to LTE I assume. I switched off LTE and set the provider manually to 3G. Maybe that helps. We'll see.

Interesting.. I have LTE as part of my network and plan... But once I made changes to the settings as I indicated, I no longer receive the network drops I originally experienced.. I might just be missing the alerts, but it seems fixed... #crossedfingers
