hi all,
im not able to understand why all the pictures taken by my Xperia are hazy..... even in daylight. please see the attached images for sample. which are taken in different lighting conditions, in "Auto" settings.
Bright Outdoor:-
, Sunny:-
, Indoor :-
i tested almost every settings but all reproduces the same, where as Xperia is quite capable of taking quality pictures (http://www.flickr.com/groups/xperia/pool/)
Im using the stock ROM, with stock camera software.
i tried the instruction in the threads (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5087670#post5087670 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577364) but not able to solve my problem.
The Quality of video is good & i don't have any problem with that.
I might be missing some setting in Still image. can some one guide me or share their settings to get bright & vivid images.

Well I'm not sure.
But once I experienced some effect of this kind and was surprised too.
Than I looked at the camera eye cover
and observed that this invisible cover is scrached.
And discovered that the camera eye cover has a little invisible
layer on. So I removed this by strong scraching with a cloth.
Once I removed this layer and made the cover clean again
I never experienced this problem again.
As for settings - I almost always use Sports mode
which gives crisp and sharp photos..
Touch zoom works great with far/close object effect.
Usually I have unfinished ∞ zoom
or automatic.

Thanks for your reply, but my problem is not related to shutter-speed or grainy thingy...
my problem is about the colors & brightness, i noticed the moment i click the image an additional amount of brightness has been added to the image before saving.
Please see this image to know my problem better.

I had the same issue - disappeared on it's own after a week or two...
I still believe it's just a lens problem,
where camera sensor badly interprets visual input.
Remember it's a DIGITAL camera,
so all the light/picture information is digitally interpreted.
There's nothing optical about it...
photo quality is good of my xperia....may be brightness control (adjusted through keys around dpad, up down ) may be high or the camera is in multishot in shoot mode...just a guess...
Hazy pictures
I had the same problems, my lens was scratched from dust and other...
I polished it with a Display-Polish (you get it in a cellular accessory store, or search at amazon for displex) and the pictures are nice and clear again.
But take care: Don't use it on the Touch-Screen!!!
Just dirty from sweat and/or greasy hands. Just wipe it of. But depends on how long has it been there. You probably need few minutes to clean it. Mine was exactly the same

when in viewfinder mode (when just about to take a picture. you know, the part where you are hunting and focusing on your subject), the picture quality is great. no smudges, the light balance is ok and the focus is just right.. but when you press the shutter button and it takes the picture, it like suddenly gets another hazy layer of over-exposed fog above your view finder preview.
as stated as well by the thread opener, the video quality is good.
if it is something to do with dirt and/or smudges on the camera's lens or lens cover, surely you would see the haze and the bad quality on all camera related stuff, including viewfinder mode and video. as another note, i have the HTC camera installed in my rom and it doesnt do the hazy, over-exposed picture on it..

Like I said - first try it, then write Mine had also great videos. Why? Well not hard to find out
And yeah, the lens seemed also OK to me.
Like I said - try to clean it first. Otherwise it's pointless to write here and complain, coz nothing else can fix it Had this on my Qtek 8310, 8500, W910.. Know what I am talking about

i have the kodak easy share C1013 which has 10 mega pixels apparently. but the problem is my phones comes blurry what ever i do, even if the flash is on for some reason, but this only happens indoors and even if the lights are on...if anyone here is good in camera, can they help me pls

Well the third photo the picture is recular out of focus. The problem with Point and SHoots is that they take a while to focus (especially in low light) and (this with all cmeras) the shutter speed has to be much lower for the sensor to gather more light...and P&S's have tiny sensors compared to an APS-C, CMOS, ir a full frame sensor. But you should just retake that shot making sure the camera is focused and maybe add some more light on the subject to make it easier for the camera.
Are you using a manual setting? Have you dropped the camera? How close are you shooting?

i have tried both manual and automatic, but both come out blurry. the camera has never been droped and this occur only indoors even if there is plently of light.

i alway focus my camera properly, when ever the focus is right, the box thing becomes green. how to lower the shutter speed i will take some photo with plenty of light. also the the the third photo was taken in a room full of light and also with the flash on
You mentioned that the room is well lit. But perhaps you are standing in front of the light and casting a shadow on your subject?
You mentioned that the camera has locked focus before you fully pressed the shutter. But with inadequate lighting, perhaps the camera is focusing on the wrong spot?
Some cameras have a light that comes on when you half-press the shutter to help the camera focus in low-light. If your camera has this, then make sure you enable it.
Also, if you didn't crop the photo, then perhaps you are holding the camera too close to your subject. Try backing off at least 2 or 3 feet. Then crop the photo with an editor to exclude anything you don't want.
You could also check settings for your focus point. It could be set to spot focus off center, I've seen it before.

i tried what you said and see the pics i uploaded, but still i dont find the quality of a 10 megapixel camera tho
For those types of pics you need a camera with a macro feature/setting.

The 3rd and 6th photos are blurry because your subject spans a large depth of field. In those two photos, the base of the iPhone is close to your camera while the top of the iPhone is far away. The distance between these 2 points is too large for your camera to handle (especially under those lighting conditions). Your camera needs a smaller aperture setting than it can handle for those shots.
(In the 3rd photo, the camera seems to have focused on the farthest point. Notice that the top is in focus but the bottom is blurred. In the 6th photo, it's the opposite. Notice that you can clearly see the cracks in the cardboard box on the bottom while the top is blurred.)
The others look on par with what you should expect from your camera under those lighting conditions.
Remember that more megapixels doesn't mean better quality.
The following is just a tip. Lighting is important. Try to take your pictures with sunlight. Don't depend on your camera flash. If you use your flash aimed directly at your subject to compensate for lack of lighting, your pics will look terrible more often than not. (I see from the reflection off the rear of your iPhone that you're using a lamp as your primary source of light. That's not adequate...)
Shallow depth of field is not a bad thing with good lighting. It allows you to highlight certain aspects of your subject. See the following examples.

The 2nd pic draws your eyes to the bottom right corner while the 3rd pic draws them towards to the top left.
These were also taken indoors with a 10MP camera. But I used my Nikon D60 with SB-400 speedlight to bounce the flash off the ceiling.
Recently i purchased Galaxy Note & i really love it but i dont like its camera.
When i open my camera app picture look beautiful & very clear but when i shot the picture it becomes dull. I tried several other camera apps also same result.
I think its because of HD display picture looks beautiful before capturing it. After capture the picture it becomes dull. I am confused why so? its because of HD display or software problem or hardware problem??

I was having the same problem, go to settings, ISO, remove from auto to 800, the pics wouldn't become dull anymore... i hope...

All cameras with digital zoom will look very bad if zoomed in. It is because the image is enlarged using its pixels rather than the lens....so as you zoom in the pixels just get bigger. I t's just like when zooming in on a photo using pinch to zoom.. ..if you zoom right in you can see individual pixels and the image will look blurred.
This is not a fault, just one of the downsides of using digital zoom.

It's not digital zoom, it's definitely the auto focus.
I have a batch of good pics from when I first started using the Note, so makes me believe the latest firmware update messed things up, especially since macro pics look fantastic.

Forgot to mention, I am experiencing the same problem as the original post. The pictures look perfect in the frame a micro-second before capturing, then the actual image turns out a bit fuzzy.

I had the same problem, but I think I have solved the problem now. When I took picture, it turned out to be very dull. I was playing around with my case today and all of a sudden, I found a clear film attached to the lens. After removed, the new picture taken became well again. You may want to see if you also has the film on the lens not removed.
I wish it was that simple.
Something in the image processing is softening the image before it's saved to the phone. If anyone has any suggestions please reply (though I've pretty much used up all the combinations).
Note, (ha!) the front facing camera takes nice crisp images, what I would also expect from the main camera.
Yes im facing same problem! I see a nice preview and when i take a pic it looks really bad ! It is disappointing really...It was not like that on the Galaxy SII.
A few things to try.Enable the anti shake function and try to keep the phone still when taking pictures.No phones take good pictures in low light situations,so when abundant light is not available switch to night mode.This will brighten the picture considerably.
Also I find the auto ISO tends towards the low setting even when light is poor so adjust the ISO manually.This might explain why some people find pictures a bit dark.
The image for me after taking an image is very dull. Like the recorded colours are reduced from what you see on the screen before capture. This is also true for video recording. I have attached a photo compairing the images of captured vs shown on the screen before capture. Hopefully someone can fix this. It must be a software issue because the hardward already shows great images before capture.

Which firmware version are you running?
hi. actually i got this problem on first time. i got this problem fix after i reset camera setting. try it yourself
I suggest you turn off the auto brightness and set the display brightness to Max and turm auto adjust screen power then try again.
I think you think the pictures are dull after they were taken because of the screen auto brightness .
I figure the camera app will increase your screen brightness for whatever brightness setting you are on and the gallery app. Wouldn't.
So you will see a duller image in gallery preview versus the camera app viewfinder , hence lead you a misconception of the picture look dull compare to the camera viewfinder.

It actually has nothing to do with the screen, rather it's how the image is captured. The software is softening the image, so even downloaded images appear dull.
And it's only the rear camera. My front camera images are crisp both on the Note's screen and when uploaded elsewhere.

Your right, brightness was set at 0% but camera app always goes to full.
Silly me!
However, the problem is still there but not so obvious as in the images I posted. The colour is undersaturated compaired to viewfinder and its also blurred/ not as sharp. That is also when taking a photo using a perfectly still stand.
I'm noticing the same thing. The pictures are dull and not as sharp as what I see on the screen. this is a huge disappointment that I hope Samsung will fix soon.
i would like to know some fix about this too... hopefully there is a nice reasoning to image becoming dull...
faced kinda a similar prob on my HTC desire hd wherein the pics became yellow however changing the AUTO WHITE balance helped me.... However on my note it doesnt.
Hi, I noticed today that when I take photos with 1x, it seems like lack of focus.
With wide camera, 3x, and 10x, the results are fine and sharp. Just the main 1x is the problem.
Note: I used manual focus with Pro mode

I don't think so, if it's the case, the pro mode will also produce blurry one. It only happens with indoor photo.
I have turned off scene optimizer & focus enhancer as well.

It's 12 PM and the light is everywhere. Not sure why the pro mode and 4:3 did better details tho?

Brace the phone to eliminate cam shake.
Make sure it's getting a AF lock.
Where you too close?
Compare the shooting settings from the pro vs photo auto whatever mode in the photos exif data.
Not every shot is a keeper...

Could be... but a couple blurry shots can happen.
Make sure the lense cover plate is clean as that can skew the AF.
Try clearing the cam data and the system cache.

I think it is okay now. I switched the full resolution and format my phone. I'll let you know if it happens again

No. It happens again.
Hmm there are actually people also having this problem.
S21 ultra 5g 1x camera auto focus issue.
So I'm on vacation in Arizona and was trying to take photos at the grand canyon. Normal 1x camera is stuck won't focus, pictures come out blurry. All other camera lenses work great. What is the problem, spent a lot of money on this phone for the camera and when I need it, it doesn't work...

What's the resolution of the resulting photos? That doesn't look like blur, but more like low resolution.

Just took the full resolution, they are 1800x4000.
The only difference is the main camera is blurry, while the other cameras work well, sharp fine photos
Even if you put your phone in one spot and you are not holding it in your hands the photos from the main cam still come up blurry?
@Sky33 what you are sharing there are screenshots which is not ideal. In order to clear the situation up let's do the following:
0. Disable location saving in the camera app.
1. Pick a well lit scene (at least as lit as a cloudy mid day) with a well defined object (the sky or a wall won't do) that is at least 2 m from your phone. Most of the times indoor lighting is not enough, except maybe for a very bright kitchen light.
2. Place your phone on an object (preferably on a tripod) or make you're holding it very still (you have to be in a confortabile position yourself).
3. Frame the photo with the above object close to the middle and force the camera to focus on it by tapping the screen on the object.
4. Take a picture with the auto mode.
5. Switch to pro mode and repeat points 3 and 4. Be careful to have approximately the same framing.
6. Upload the original photos to a file sharing service (Google Drive, One Drive, mega.nz, etc.) and share them here. Do not use a photo sharing service as that might compress the pictures. Do not remove any EXIF data from the pictures.
In case I wasn't clear enough please point it out. I'm not in the best environment to write.
Let's see what comes out.

On my N10+ I will use manual mode when automated mode fails. Usually because of an AF lockon issues.
These micro lense systems have no adjustable aperture so no aperture priority mode, the most useful mode to have when shooting.

I came from N10+ and didn't have this issue. Usually just open camera, point, and shoot, and will definitely get those fine results.
I guess this is a new normal for me :/

I came from N10+ and didn't have this issue. Usually just open camera, point, and shoot, and will definitely get those fine results.
I guess this is a new normal for me :/

Return it if not happy.
If anything it should be better than the 10+'s AF.
I got a second new N10+ 2 weeks ago because both Samsung latest and Android 11 didn't thrill me.

Sorry for my late response but I've been rather busy lately.
I kept on looking at the two sets of pictures and I must say there are some interesting things happening there. I assumed that the objects in focus are the boxes of Crunchies and the chair on the grass, respectively. I took a look at the EXIF data and it might explain a lot.
Indoor picture:
Auto: The blur seems to be caused by movement. If the exposure time is correct (1 s) than it is very much explainable. I'm not sure how capable Samsung's OIS is, but from my experience 4 stops is what OIS would compensate for and there are approx 5 stops (1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1) between pro and auto exposure times.
Pro: The exposure time is just about right for a clear shot (1/50 sec). The exposure seems to be calculated differently, for whatever reason.
Outdoor picture:
Auto: Same as before, there is a 1 sec exposure time.
Pro: The photo seems to be more sharpened in pro mode.
I would recommend you wipe the cache of the camera app and try again. If the results are not improving then try wiping the data of the camera app. If things are still blurry, call Samsung service center. There is a possibility that your camera module is not properly calibrated.
A request to those who have updated to 12.1, check the optical stabilization. In the camera application, in photo mode, on the main module, with micro movements, the picture should be static. Or through instagram, telegrams, etc. Stabilization should also work there.
(I just can’t understand either a mechanical failure, or OIS disappeared after the update)
Same here. OIS only works on video mode, not in photo mode.
The preview is shakey but the picture seems focused nicely. So i dont see any issue here.

It is more difficult to take a night photo without a tripod. Or a long exposure photo.

^ this summarize OPPO hahaha
the preview while your taking the photo is sh*t like it's not focusing(it keep saying go further or go near the target) , not colorful enough and somewhat pixelated but after taking it and OPPO applied AI correction and HDR it would turn out really beautiful
usually i just ignore warning like go near or further the target since it would still take the photo anyway

I dont get any warnings like you do. In addition preview is shakey when you shake your phone, but when you click shutter button the picture is cristal clear and sharp in my case
If you dial *#899# then go to manual test - camera, you can see how the stabilization should work in the photo.
It's not a bug, it's a feature
Hope it comes back in the next update.
