[Q] Washed out colors/poor black levels - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend just bought this phone and I am shocked at how poor the display is. I was so excited to check out this phone but compared to my Xperia S, the display is crap. The colors are so washed out, the status bar is grey not black...it's not so bad when viewing videos where bravia kicks in, but in the System UI it's piss poor. My Xperia S is so much vibrant and I can't believe that is the case.
I tried googling, saw a lot of people complaining, but some of the data is old and supposedly that was only the case in test models? Has this issue not been resolved or is my friend's phone defected?

The status bar is meant to be grey.

A a snippet from my post in another thread:
The screen looks stunning, like as good as (if not better than) HTC One stunning.
I think the biggest problem is genuinely the grey interface. If you dump the default wallpaper for one with some deep colours it really looks awesome. I reckon if the next update has black interface bars too, it will really show up that this is a really nice screen, just with a slightly dull initial interface.

Change your wallpaper to black you will see the black than.
Please Sony release the update and make the ui black and let us free. lol.

The built in wallpaper of a blue flower on black background really shows the blacks up well.

Why are people still responding to posts questioning the screen quality? It's obvious that the colours are not subject to over saturation and therefore will look 'washed out' next to other devices that have the saturation cranked up to the max. I was initially a bit disappointed with the screen myself, but after having the Z for a few weeks, now see the colours are actually displayed correctly on the Z.

Your friends phone is totally fine. The xperia z i like that. There are a couple of tweaks that can modify and improve the xperia z colours it like the whitebalance mod
Press thanks if i have helped

Thanks guys, I want trying to bash Sony, I was just surprised initially. Very bad decision by Sony with the UI, really looks bad and very washed out..
I went to service mode and did the display test, the blacks are fine.

The next update is said to have black ui bars so it should make that side of it better.

Ya, the worldwide edition status bar is in grey color, only Japan DoCoMo Edition origin in black.
That why a lot mod already here for changing grey bar to black or even now semi transparent possible.
Rumors also mention coming version will revert to black bar.

I have that on my S8500, Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note but none on my Galaxy S1.
Its believed to be a software issue and there is a thread discussing about that, but some claim they dont have those reddish/brownish lines. I'll search the thread.
EDIT:
I cant seem to find that thread anymore, but it was all about this issue.
Thanks anyways ill take a look around for it its more like black and grey lines the messed up thing is its only on the lock screen so I don't know if my screen is going or what

PocketNow Nexus 7 Unboxing (Video)

In the video, they also turn it on and play with it a little.
I like when they play with it a little.
And hey... they back of his is white... they're not all white are they? I thought they were like a slate grey? Is there color options I'm not aware of or that's a special one just from the conference perhaps?

Request/help on porting theme

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149482
Anyone remember this theme purestar alpha? One of my favorite themes. I was wondering if it was possible to port to the one?! I've never tried themeing but I will def try with some help unless an experienced themer wants to take it on.
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I figured since it's about a theme id put it here. Thanks.

Nice theme! You'd probably need to recreate most of the images yourself due to low res though

You got that right. These new drawable-xxhdpi folders, almost everything has to be resized now even from a lot of the newer themes. I think they come up with all of this new stuff to keep us pulling our hair out...lol.
looks like...
For the main part it looks like the inverted sense theme. With some neon green highlights and green icons... Shouldn't honestly be that hard to be done. If I get some more free time and get tired of dealing with spider man theme for a while, I wouldn't mind whipping that up. the current lock screen no longer has the sense 3/4 ring anymore though. I'll try and get to it sooner than later if possible and will keep you posted.
Haven't looked here in awhile. Thanks for the responses. I'm looking into recreating something similar with more white around the icons fitting for a key lime pie type theme. I think status bar icons and other elements would look great in lime green similar to this theme with a hint of white outlining them and dark backrounds. But I have no experience and I'm just lookin into where I should even begin.

Never understood the whining about on-screen buttons taking screen space.

Its one of those things that is just so ridiculous. When you buy a phone with on-screen buttons its so obvious that the actual screen won't be as big as a phone with the same screen size but hard buttons. How is this difficult to understand for so many people is beyond me.
The main purpose of on-screen buttons is to allow for a flexible and dynamic navigation not to maximize screen space.
Default size for navbar is the issue, indeed it look ridiculous and rather goofy IMHO. Luckily custom ROMs allow it to be shrunken or removed and replaced with pie.

Yes, though I myself was disappointed, moving from a 4.0 inch (with the buttons not on the screen( to a 4.3 inch device (with the buttons taking screen space), and seeing very little difference.
PIE/custom ROMs are the workaround, but for "most" users, the workable screen area is not what is implied.

was kinda disappointed how much they take space the nav bar buttons on stock...but again at the same time i just got used to it..simple really..and with XDA well you know how awesome these guys are
@GAMBLER - the reason of crating a separate thread is actually beyond me and not people being different and having different preferences and different needs. So I don't really understand what's your point, as people can decide better what's good and what's not for themselves and with android they have plenty of options to change things the way they want it. Also its only software buttons so you can do whatever you want with them, if everyone was complaining about the hardware buttons taking space then it would be different story

I think it's ok, but the black space around the keys are a waste... there's a lot of pixel lines to take away from the nav bar...
I like it, it makes the phone much easier to use. My same sized One X with it's lower down capacitive buttons would become uncomfortable after a while of repetitive thumb moving.

Its a forum for discussion, his topic is related to Nexus 4 and is general. It doesnt matter if he wants to talk about a nexus 4's processor/ram/camera or the shape of the fingerprint he found on the screen, i think he's entitled.

It would be very interesting if they made a transparent nav bar where maybe buttons pop up when you press them or the symbols float over the app.. Or maybe the symbols are floating but with an inverted color scheme like the windows XP inverted mouse o.o

@younix yes your are absolutely right it is forum and it is for discussion. But what I don't like is the generalisation and the tone. If it was written in a different way maybe then it would be perfectly fine as it would invite for discussion.
Also it's best when ideas are supported by some facts and not just bashing something without concrete support.
But then again its my opinion and whether you agree or not its up to you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Well I can see WHY people are concerned with the buttons taking up real-estate, but I don't agree with it. I'd much rather have the on-screen buttons rather than the alternative: hard buttons.
And I get the concerns that the stock buttons are too large. I kind of agree, however I'm pretty used to it so I'm indifferent about any changes. Right now I'm using PIE anyway.
I think it would look nice if they take away the black background (make it fully transparent) and separate the buttons.
The transparency would give a feel of a bigger screen, and we'd still have the buttons, circle/square or whatever shape, separated from one another, as if they're floating over the wallpaper.

Because it consumes the space of the display yet the phone still looks like it was meant to have capacitive buttons below. (That huge space below that is ruled by a small led light!? Hell lg or google can place that damn led light near the sensors)
I'm going to buy a nexus 4 soon . but I don't think it will take much place. I hope I'm right..

The first thing I did after rooting and installing custom ROM was reducing the navbar size
Stock navbar is ugly as hell !

I have mine 85% transparent and 65% of normal height. It doesn't look right transparent when using an app though so only when on the launcher.

Almost every custom ROM I've seen lets you change the nav bar height. Others will let you change the colour and set transparency.
This is really easy, if you don't like onscreen buttons, don't buy a nexus.
I never understood all the complaining about the onscreen buttons also, for the people that don't like it, I will suggest to get another phone.

I prefer capacitive buttons on a phone or mini tablet. Maybe its just what I am use to. In didn't fancy the nav bar on my n7 and I really didn't care for pie controlls. On my note 10.1 I think they work flawless andthe screen is so large that I don't feel I am missing anything. I don't understand why people hate capacitive buttons if you don't like them you are not forced to use them. But it's ok we all have preference and neither is right or wrong but just an opinion.

Nova Launcher + DCikonz pack = No worries about anything changing. Or you could just switch out the apks from 4.3.
Not really worried about the change more wondering if these leaks are phony. Its smells like apex launcher with an iOS theme too me
Sent from my XT1080 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
They're from genuine sources as far as I know because the people that leaked them want to remain as anonymous Google employees. However one thing that I find annoying is that they're getting rid of the holo blue statusbar notifcations. I'm not really fond of the white which reminds me of HTC Sense.
Please use one of the existing discussion threads, there's too much clutter in this forum already for people to be posting a new thread for every new thought they have re: these leaks
