3d printable model of case for N4. - Nexus 4 General

Some of you may have seen the post about wiring a second battery to your N4, and getting fantastic battery life. For those who may have missed it, you can find it here
4200mAh Nexus 4 - second internal battery!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41203417#post41203417
The problem is that you have to destroy your back cover.
The average person reading this post seems oblivious the the wonders of 3d printing. I've posted a few times and it seems to go right over everyone's head. So I'm posting in the main forum.
I am willing to pay $10.00 to the person who creates a 3d model of a case for the N4, with room for the extra battery, that holds everything in place. I know I'm not the only one willing to do this. If we get enough people interested in chipping in, a 3d modeler could make a nice chunk of change.
I did a google search for "have something 3d printed" and I get a bunch of companies, all I need is someone to make the model.
Anyone interested?

$10 would not even be worth the material to print out a "custom" case you want let alone the time and resources involved.

I don't want or need someone to print it out. I am going to submit the file to the printing service and pay for that all on my own. As would anyone else who wants the case.
I am paying 10.00 for someone to create the model in autocad for example. Provide that file for download. So anyone can submit this file to the printing service, pay the printing service fee, and have the printed case mailed to them.

Ten dollars? To develop a product that might eventually change the future of this phone, I don't think so

OMG!
Does ANYBODY understand crowd sourcing?
I'm not saying to pay this person 10 dollars. I'm saying WE ALL PAY 10.00.
you know...that whole bit where I said if 25 people want to submit 10.00...this person gets 250.00...
And your right, something that WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE OF THIS PHONE...so I think that passing 25 people would be easy,
Hell, there might be 100's. Thus making this person $1000.00.
I'm getting rrreeaalllly close to hiring this person and flat out paying him/her myself. Then charging for the file and putting the money into my bank account.
Forget it. I am going to have it designed myself.

I'm not planning on paying 10.00 to have it printed. I'm chipping in 10.00 to have the document that is sent to the printer created. And paying to have it printed on my own. He w ever that much would be.
Regardless. The battery will be here after the 13th. I'm going to confirm the op. Between my roommate and I, we are going to *try* to develop an easy way to do the hardware mods to the device so almost anyone can do it. I'm going to hire the 3d modeler, have a few cases printed up and sell um on eBay.
Or... At least have great battery life and a nice case, depending on the cost I may just have one printed.
One way or another, I'm going to take full advantage of technology available to me.

IMO that project is much better suited for phones with removable covers, as you have a preexisting mounting mechanism and there's no need to modify the actual phone. I can say however that a printable case fit the N4 woukd be pretty sweet.

This post in particular disgusts me.. I would help change the future of this (or ANY device) for FREE if I had the required skill set. Not everyone in the world is in it for the almighty dollar.
Rant over. Carry on folks, I hope this gets going. If I ever shatter my back piece, I'll be right here with you.

I say throw this up on kickstarter, while I don't want this I'd chip in $5.

Sooo I came across this thread, and I'm an engineer, with access to a 3d printer and CAD software.
If a two piece hard case exists, I could base it on that, the 3d material isn't that strong when thin so it would have to be a two piece design.
This is certainly intriguing, though I must warn you, the "ink" our printer uses feels fairly cheap. I'm not sure what texture you're looking for, but I know other options exist, it would just be a matter of getting options from the shop who is actually printing.
Just want to note too, the ink is fairly expensive, plus there is hand cleaning necessary after the object is printed (driving up the cost).
I have a model N4 that I used to make a basic desk holder, I can send that to you to get a quote.
Let me know
EDIT: also, a case with a battery would need to be wired into the original, thus destroying your current back...unless a battery with qi like capacity could be placed next to the untouched back.

There is a web company that will print it for you. You just upload the 3d file and pay. Its around 30 dollars.

Agree with what you are saying about the two piece case, I am studying my senior year to become an engineer, I don't have a 3d printer but have Cad and will try to design something today, do you mind looking at it and giving your thought on it?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

If it were me, I would copy the dimensions of the OEM bumper, use AutoCAD or Pro-E to make the 3D model, print and shove the rubber part from the bumper into the case. I'll take a look at my bumper when I get home and do a mock up. $10 for 10 minutes of work is worth it lol. The most time consuming parts would be getting exact measurements. I'll have my trusty caliper for that. The rounds would be a bit tricky though. Plus including some sort of tolerance for the mass produced 4's, though I suspect it should be fine if I stick with the same dimensions of the bumper.

Instead buy a travel charger !! Its too beautiful to be fk'd up

It comes with the original box!!!!! Win!
It might be worth getting if it stays cheap, because we all know that the market for replacing the digitizer on popular phones is pretty fast to start offering parts or repairs, might be able to fix it for $20-$30.
The display is fused to the glass, so fixing that would mean a new display/digitiser/front-glass unit. That's going to be costly.
Might be worth a few bucks as a spare battery, but LiIon degrades just sitting on the shelf, so not really worth keeping one lying around.

If the broken glass/digitizer can be removed without damaging the display, it could be turned into a very nice wifi digital picture frame with lots of storage.
Google sells additional Nexus 7 Chargers at $25. That' easy money.
And if all else fails, for $50 sell that 16GB eMMC to someone who regrets going with only 8GB. Big money. I'm kidding.
I was thinking it could be used as a media center for music in my BBQ area xmbc.., it would be nice to have 2 seperate xmbc setups in the house, one on the main media center and one just for out the back, it could mount the files on the other media center via UNC... BID!

anyone else flip phones on craigslist?

lol i do.
yesterday i needed some quick cash because of a move im doing and i was short on my energy bill...
so i put my sprint galaxy nexus on craigslist for sale/ trade.
last week i got it new in the box for 150. a deal to me for sure.
i got a bunch of crap offers but eventually someone offered me their epic 4g touch and 100 cash for the gnex.
so we met up at a sprint store and called customer care because the store cannot do active phone swaps and we both went home happy.
right away i listed the phone on craigslist, within a few hours i got a few offers, mostly junk but one was or seemed to be worth while.
a white iphone 4 8gb, with case and charger, even trade. so telling her i was interested i posted the white iphone up on craigslist also forsale/trade before i even had it. i got many offers, a few low balls (lol even 50 dollars with the excuse that its outdated and old and the new iphone will be out this month lol), then a 225.00 offer, a 200 dollar offer, you get the idea. i entertained them all, but one of the guys ended up changing their minds and made a even better offer, he retracted his 200 dollar offer and said he would trade me his mint condition epic 4g touch with case, charger and 100 cash... BINGO lol, i quickly accepted.
how could i loose, i met up with the girl at 615pm to do the swap for my epic touch for her iphone 4, after thats done i wait for the guy who comes at 7 and we call sprint all over again and do another swap, it all works out and i leave with another 100 in cash and the same phone i came in with lol.
so i was tainted with a apple phone for about 10 mins... Lol it wasn't that bad but the screen was hard to adjust to.
anyone else flip on craigs? needless to say i have my epic back up on CL for hopefully another trade or sale.
i already got my epic touch running jellybean and honestly its not too much different then my gnex minus the lte which i dont have yet and the HD screen which is noticeable to me.
Seems kind of immoral to me. It's like abusing Wal-Mart return policies to make a buck. You're using Craigslist outside of its intended use for profit. But you do what you gotta do to make the bills work: I personally would not make a habit of "flipping phones".

im using a public website that is made for buying, selling, and bartering.
thats exactly what im doing.
im not "abusing" or misusing anything, and its not a mega corporation where im scamming their return policies.
its a buy sell and trade website..
thats exactly what im doing.
in fact there are reality tv shows based on this same thing, that where they use outlets like craigslist, people do it with everything under the sun, from tvs, to cars.
im not ripping anyone off or telling people things that they arent.
im giving people what they want and im getting what i want.
exactly what the website is for.
When you start to talk about morality, you instantly are entering into a subjective paradigm in the philosophical/metaphysical sense. However, I do agree you're in a way taking advantage of peoples lack of knowledge on the tech you're trading. Is this immoral? Depends on how you define it. If both parties are happy and walk away from the deal feeling like their was an equitable exchange, then I personally don't think so. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Now, if you intentionally mislead the other party into believing they're getting a much better offer than they realize for your profit then yes this is, to me, immoral, but I don't think your doing this. It is the reason I believe the majority of advertisements and those working in the field are in some sense immoral, but this is getting off topic.
In short, I haven't done it and for me the amount of time and effort isn't worth the small return.
I didn't mean to imply you're ripping anyone off. I just find it interesting how one can make a buck nowadays. I stress the kind of part because I read about the iphone part and it boggles my mind how people are willing to pay so much for so little. I get that if the needs are met then it's fine. However it boggles me further how people can conclude the iphone 4 and the galaxy s2 phone is of equal value. Galaxy s2 clearly has better specs plus MIUI more than makes up for the iOS experience. I get that not everyone is gifted with our passion which is why I use the term "immoral" for someone who knowingly barters with this information in hand. But I do agree with l3lessed that if the girl is happy then that's what matters. Then I conclude that while the ends justifies the means this time, I wouldn't make a habit of this kind of business.
That said: I'm sure you can many people in the MP that has "flipped phone".

I was just short this month and this way its legal Lol
Everyone was happy. In fact all the deals I did were brought to me, made by the other party.
I agree the iPhone to me isn't worth much but as everyone can see they have a huge faithful following, enough so to dump more premium phones (in our eyes) in order to have one.
Locally regular iPhone 4 non s versions are still selling more than galaxy s2s.
Its mind boggling to me actually.

I flip phones all the time. If i find a great deal then i will most definitely snatch it up. One thing I never do is low ball. I always offer them a fair price that's low enough for me to make a profit, yet sits well with conscience. Business on Craigslist is easy money if you can negotiate.

I can't see the immorality in his actions. He's entertaining offers from others and not misrepresenting his goods. If anything, I'm impressed by the fact that youre arranging Craigslist deals in advance and juggling it all. You should get into stocks or futures or something and make real money with your talents.
It's not immoral, nothing wrong with it.
I have done that once or twice, it's how I get "new phones for free" but honestly it takes too much time/effort/driving and to me is not really worth it. I do it like once a year to upgrade my phone but that's about it. It's not a bad way to get a decent device though, just be willing to put up with all the BS that goes along with it.
I actually prefer the MP here for the most part, except for a few items that are overpriced here that I want to buy or underpriced (compared to local prices) that I want to sell.

Its not hard to do,but can be time consuming and irritating when you run into tire kickers and people who bs.

$10B/year spent on minimum wage...

For McDonalds fast food workers. Their jobs are the best example I can think of that are so easily replaceable by a machine that does it for next to nothing. Even the initial development, fabrication, and testing of a computerized system which would make the perfect double cheeseburger would cost less than a single day's employment costs. I could probably find a group of people right here in these forums capable of it.

I understand this is a touchy subject. Increasing socialism appropriately is what needs to happen for those families.
From a company's perspective, what gives? Are they afraid to deviate from the status quo and try something new? Or, more likely IMO, a set of government regulations which make it unfavorable to automate.

I think it's more the first one. It's the old saying, if it's not broken, why fix it. Fast food makes more money then Hollywood and video games combined. Why risk that? Also, they want to protect their image. Can you imagine the bad PR if a big chain went completely automated in a short period of time. Also, what will happen if it breaks down? Will all restaurants have to have a full time staff of mechanics on stand by?

Equip each McDonald's with triple redundancy food lines? If one breaks you can schedule a team of regional mechanics to look at it on Wednesday next week.
The PR is an important factor and you mentioned a reputed company's brand if they did it in a short time.. But McDonald's could test it by creating a separate brand and hiring two individuals with the best customer service personalities. They would make money hand over foot because they only paid $40/hr for labor to produce a product with superior quality, less cost to the consumer, and in whatever amount of time it takes for the conveyor belt to make (half) a revolution.
I use McDonald's as an example.. My point is WHY isn't this happening across the board?

Clamshell Keyboard

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Google and Samsung seemingly refuse to develop a competent and attractive keyboard solution. Especially with the Microsoft Surface Touch and Type covers selling so well with the actual Surface. The Nexus 10 has such an ideal connector in the pogo pins, and creating a keyboard dock with a hinge could not possibly involve heavy R&D costs. The market is clearly there. I would love to see a third party maker, like the creators of the ClamCase for the iPad, come up with a solution. The new ClamCase Pro is absolutely beautiful and greatly increases the productivity potential of the iPad. I'd buy one for the Nexus 10 in a heartbeat. I suppose I should not be surprised as we have yet to see an official pogo charger, although the one I bought works rather well, from either Samsung or Google. Both are doing a horrendous job of supporting a flagship tablet.
That was the rant portion of this post, my apologies.
I'm very curious to see what the best solutions everyone has come up with. Yes, I have perused all the other threads regarding the topic, and I've found the answers and workarounds less than appealing. So unless Google and Samsung miraculously come to their senses and release an accessory that should have been available 3 months ago, I'm hoping that one of the brilliant minds on here will spark some hope or joy into my search. So if you don't mind, please share your ideas, opinions, and possible solutions that I may be able to try out and attempt to assuage my growing frustration.
I just hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and put the tablet on a stand.
From a business standpoint, it's a waste of good R&D money to try to develop an integrated keyboard solution for a tablet. Nexus devices always have vestigial ports and plugs, and this is just due to Google's lazy practice of axing a particular feature over cost concerns, and then they just ask the hardware manufacturer to leave the remnants of it in rather than spend more money revising the design.
People that really need keyboards and mice will already have a preferred Bluetooth or OTG USB solution, meanwhile the OS itself doesn't require nor is it designed around those input devices. Personally I find it annoying and slow to use the OS with a mouse and keyboard, and only use the keyboard if I have a table nearby and need to type for extended periods of time. If such an occasion wasn't so rare, I probably would have bought an actual laptop or Chromebook instead.
Microsoft makes a point of marketing the Surface as more of a business device, but the RT still fell flat in that regard (wtf no Active Directory integration?), and the Pro is obscenely expensive for a device that doesn't offer any additional business features that can't be accomplished by a cheaper Windows 8 laptop. Keyboards and mice on tablets are niche features, and most people balked at the fact that a touch cover for the Surface RT costs an extra $100, which was also a pretty terrible keyboard overall. Google wasn't ready to make the same mistake, because historically Samsung charges obscene amounts of money for their accessories as well.
If given the choice between a $30 Motorola Bluetooth keyboard that requires its own batteries, or a $70-$100 Samsung keyboard that hooks into the pogo pins, I'd prefer the $30 option. I use my tablet like a tablet, and use a desktop or laptop when I need to do actual work. Trying to shoehorn my tablet into being a laptop replacement often ends in failure and disappointment, so I just accepted its limitations and moved on.

At last!!! I've been checking this accessories subforum since the Nexus 10's release waiting for one. I wonder if I can sell my logitech keyboard that I never use. Please please let us know how it works. Kind of can't believe it took this long
also, you can find it cheaper here:
http://www.amazon.com/VSTN%C2%AE-Aluminum-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Cover/dp/B00BP4QGTY/ref=sr_1_368_m?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1364153448&sr=1-368&keywords=Bluetooth+Keyboard+nexus+10
i discovered this link after i ordered...but in my case it's the same thing due to shipping cost to Europe.

Interesting. Looks identical to the Minisuit Case I order a couple weeks ago that is still on preorder:

Maybe it's time to cancel that order and go with Amazon.

I don't know if that would make a difference. I ordered mine a couple days ago and Amazon estimates three to six weeks for delivery. I will let you know if I get it sooner.

Thanks. I didn't cancel and will also keep you posted.
I see now that minisuit has changed the picture to the black one - it was originally the brushed aluminum - so this should be a fun wait and see experience.
I received an email today saying they are out of the black ones until next weekend if I want to wait or they can send me a silver now. Either way they're offering a 20% refund for the inconvenience. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I wanted the black one.

I noticed from the pictures that this clam-shell keyboard and the other 2 i found on amazon all have a big piece of plastic that sticks out right in front of the space-bar key... i suppose its necessary for it to close properly with the N10....
When anyone gets it, please let us know if it get on the way of typing normally!
Thanks!
So any reviews?
Yeah I have been watching these keyboards as well. I love how they snap onto the nexus to protect it.

As soon as I have it I'll post some photos and a review.

Best Buy Reviews

I can't relate to most of it and seems most others can't either. The storage issue is understandable, but I though Samsung was going to address this in a future update.
And I don't understand giving it "1" in all other categories for one failure.

To me it looks like HTC fanboys are overwhelming the s4 reviews. Most of the 1 star ratings recommend the HTC One.
I used to be an HTC fan boy, but their apple approach and gs4 converted me.

Those are crap reviews. They aren't based on anything other than the storage. Just htc fan boys. They don't seem to mention that the One has no expandable memory. No removable battery. An aluminum body that will easily get messed up. I've always liked htc products, all my prior phones were htc. However, the lack of sd card and removable battery killed it for me. The One that my Co worker has is already all scratched up and scuffed from being in his pocket. Does anyone know how much storage is available on the One?

I had the One before I got the s4. The expandable storage didn't bother me at all, and had tons more compared to the s4. Was really shocked to see how little storage there is. But an sd easily takes care of the issue. I don't have many apps anyways. Personally just need storage for music and backups/ROMs.
The phone looked great as well, but a 3" drop really messed it up. Also the vibrator inside was loose and would rattle, and almost none of the trim pieces lined up, including the screen.
If the phone was built better, I might have kept it even though I was never able to successfully stream a YouTube video on the mobile network cause the signal was to crappy.
So far, glad to be back in Samsung.

I stopped going to best buy back in 2007 let alone reading any review from them. Go and ask Geek Squad to fix your next broken PC and you'll see what I mean... I'd rather buy my electronics from a crook on the street than walk into any Best Buy.
The only reason to buy from best buy is their warranty
Other than that they seem very biased
Yeah....anytime I see 3 similar negative reviews and all 3 of them recommending the same alternative product (HTC One), all credibility flies out the window.
Wow these guys at best buy lmao.

My s4 upgrade is in 1 week. I'm up in the air about go through sprint or best buy. The Best buy no deductible is nice and no limit on replacements. Has anyone used best buys insurance? If yes is it good? I like assurion but getting sick of forking out $100 each.

I picked up my phone at Best Buy this time with their insurance. I asked others experience with their protection and I hear good things. I also buy all my electronics there and have never had anything but good experiences, so I trust them.

Exactly. Aluminum looks pretty, but scuffs easily. Especially the black version

It is kind of funny. These guys are clearly promoting HTC all over the place and anyone can see through that.
Thanks for the replies. I also never lose phones. Saying that I'll lose an s4 and be out $700! I've been looking for reviews on their replacements. Knowing there free has me kind of iffy about them. Assurion cost $100 but I've always had nice and sometimes new devices.

Assurion is $150 unless you have a older smartphone.

Those are spam. If you look, all of those user accounts were just opened and they left negative reviews on 3 different variations of the S4. You can't tell me they bought the Sprint, Tmobile, Unlocked etc S4s all at the same time.
