[Q] Contemplating switch to WinMob from Android - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been a avid android user and supporter for some years now but lately some of the models has started to let me down as time as has started to pass. Presently there are no Android phones that really gets me going and at the same point I would like to try out Windows Phone 8, but then problem comes; which phone to choose >.<
I ideally want one which has a MicroSD card slot, since I have a 64 gig card in my 9305 (SGS3 4g) that I want to transplant over, but hopefully at the same time not being forced to stick with an inferior WinMob model or version compared to what is already around and available. I am living in Europe which naturally also puts a hamper on the available models to me.
But any recommendations?

The top-end Windows Phone handset that also offers microSD support is the Samsung Ativ S. It's basically identical hardware to the GS3, though you might get better performance than was possible with Android (WP7 was better than Android on the same hardware, not sure about WP8). The best WP8 devices in general are going to be the Lumia 92x (920 and the recently-announced 925 and 928) models, but while these come with up to 32GB of internal storage they lack microSD cards, and their CPU/GPU/RAM are basically the same as the Ativ S (resolution is very slightly higher, 1280x768 instead of 1280x720).

Well, do you have a budget in mind? Although the Samsung Ativ S is a good phone, they lack of any particular support from Samsung is damning. As a result, as of now, if you really want a high end Windows Phone which will also get supported from the maker, then that has to be the Lumia 920 (although it doesn't have a card slot). The other option would be to get hold of the Lumia 720 (incredibly sleek as well as having a card slot), though not really high end, but in many opinions, better than the Lumia 820 (which does have a better screen aspect ratio).

The OS support mainly comes from Microsoft may be Nokia has some more features but all OS updates come from Microsoft for all the devices AFAIK

Yes that is true. MSFT will send out the updates and they do sport the same features, but what I meant was by the way of differentiation. Nokia with its various apps (especially Here Maps and Here Drive) amongst other stellar apps is really making a difference to the ecosystem. They regularly update their apps, as well as sporting many games and apps which are Nokia exclusive. Just look at the recently announced Hipstamatic app. It will first come to Nokia for an exclusive period.
All I meant to say was, by and far, Nokia is the only phone developer who is taking the ecosystem seriously and furthering its development.

Currently the Ativ S is the only top-tier WP8 phone with an SD card slot, but it is nigh impossible to get in the states, and I'm not even sure what carriers whould support it. Plus, WP8 is an afterthought to Samsung, so don't expect much in the way of support for the phone.
Nokia is a fantastic company, makes great phones and absolutely supports them beyond what any other cell phone company does. Their flagship phones (i.e. the 920 and variants) are unsurpassed, but they lack SD card support.
The highest end Lumia with SD card support is the 820/822, which is flagship minus the camera and big, high-res screen. Performance is at least as good as the 920 series and better than any Android phone.
The 8X is also an excellent phone, not quite up to par with the 920s but still extremely good. It lacks SD card support and the app support Nokia provides, but is more svelte and "fashionable" if you will.

There are two variants of the Ativ S. The SGH-T899M can be imported from Canada (easily and not particularly expensively), pre-SIM-unlocked and with no external (and very minimal internal; you have to go look for it) carrier branding. It works flawlessly on T-Mobile's bands (including their LTE). It will also work on AT&T, not quite as well (not all of AT&T's LTE bands are supported, I think, but some places are) but well enough.
The Nokia 92x line is definitely the "best" aside from the lack of expandable/removable storage. They have the highest-resolution displays, the most internal storage, the best cameras, and the best apps.

If you like swype keyboards, you'll miss them. Otherwise, the only real nitpick I have is haptic feedback not able to be disabled on the permakeys (back, win key, etc). I only got a Windows phone for app development though. My galaxy nexus is still my normal phone, even if Android is a bit more laggy and eats more battery.

Samsung phones are able to disable the feedback using an OEM app. Other phones would be capable of it if we can break out of the sandbox (yet another thing we had in WP7 and are missing in WP8, at least in the current state of homebrew).

[Q] HTC HD7 or Samsung Focus or Apple iphone 4?

I am confused which one to buy?
I love WP7 but I'm unsure which of those 3 smartphones to buy.
I hope there will be Zune HD2 and in that case I can have the iphone 4 and an experience of WP7.
Give me your opinions please.
I'm going with the Focus. I've been looking forward to have a phone with a nice 4" AMOLED screen. It only has 8GB internal, but is expandable via MicroSD to 40GB. Plus it has 512MB of RAM so it should be pretty good.
If I was on T-mobile I would go with the HD7, but AT&T is not getting that one. The Surround looks nice, but the focus is thinner and I don't need the speakers. I originally wanted the iPhone 4 when it came out but I was not available for upgrade. And now that I've seen WP7, I'm glad they wouldn't let me upgrade
Personally I would give it a while before making a decision. wp7 is new and probably troublesome. and besides there will be very few programs until it matures a bit...
Whats stopping you from getting an android phone?
Two things attract me towards Focus
1). 1500 mAh battery (HTC giving only 1200 mAh)
2). microSD slot (which I think WinMo7 is forbidding OEMs, somehow Samsung has got the signal)
WP7 supports "extra" memory but not "expandable/removable" memory. If you put in a SD card it will require a hard reset. If you want to upgrade your SD card in the future it will take a hard reset. No big deal if you ask me, I'll probably put in an extra 32GB on day one and be done with it.

That sounds a lot better than my initial impression of not being able to expand memory size at all. A bit of an odd requirement, but no different than a phone with an SD card slot underneath the battery.
Between the HD7 or the Focus, you simply have to ask yourself if you prefer the deep blacks and vibrant colors of the Focus or the larger screen of the HD7. Will all come down to personal preference. I've got a Captivate right now and I'd love a 4.3" device, but it's going to be hard to give up the Super AMOLED.

I think the reason for the non user replaceable SD cards is due to microsoft wanting to control the file system without user intervention. From their perspective it makes the device safer to manage.
Being able to upgrade the SD card is purely for OEMs hence the reason why it resets the device. The average user wont attempt to upgrade their cards, but it's great to see power users having this ability.
I also think it will vary from OEM to OEM how this is implimented. I cant see HTC making it easily available to users to upgrade so my hat goes of to Samsung for allowing it.
Maybe in the future most OEMS will offer a "one-time-upgrade" at time of purchase or when you buy every OEM has mutltiple options available, they just slip in a card before dispatch.
Anyway, my first WP7 phone is the HD7, my faithful HD2 is on it's last legs and due early retirement. I don't think I could go back to anything smaller.
This time next year I think the WP7 landscape will look completely different with more choice of phones per network (O2 UK currently only offer the HD7), I'll review the replacement for the HD7 again then.

[Q] Q: Upgrade time, Which to go for?

My upgrade is coming up soon and am thinking of either the Samsung ATIVs, Nokia Lumia 820 or HTC 8x, These are the only viable options O2 have on offer at present, Looks as though they will not be stocking the Lumia 920.
I am currently using a Lumia 900 running 7.8 and have used a Lumia 820 before it had to be replaced, Wife now has my 820 and from my experience with Nokia and HTC I have not had much luck with reliability.
I have had a HTC Titan & Titan2 and love the large screens.
Question is do I take a gamble on the Samsung? Can anyone share their experiences and or preferences to help me make a decision?
Thanks in advance.
Hmm, tough one.
For me, Lumia920 is the WP8 uberphone just 4 now.
Samsungs Ativ? IMHO it has only 2 pros and much more contras.
Pros: Big screen (But AMOLED, not IPS), and good front facing camera (1.9 if I remember correctly)
Cons: cheap plastic, although looks good (at start), ugly (at least to me, and reminds a lot to S3 which I despise).
It has a SD card slot, but WP8 has no good management of SD cards, so I consider it a con
Also, Nokia has its premium services like City Lens, and Maps...
This is only my opinnion, possibly some1 else has another...
Good luck with the choice
Lumia all the way, I have an 822 and besides a few personal issues that I have with it; its a great phone. No more Bing Maps.:good:
I have an 8X and an Ativ S. I use the Ativ S as my daily. I much prefer it to the 8X.
The reasons?
1. Feels much nicer in the hand than the 8X.
2. Expandable storage means I don't have to mess around with cloud solutions.
3. Much better battery life.
4. Bigger screen.
5. Physical 'Home' button to wake the device rather than hunt for the on/off button.
6. Better FF camera.
7. Additional benefits such as ability to block callers etc.
Thanks for your input peeps, I imagined the Samsung would have had better build quality and I don't like the plastic feel mentioned, Also the raised home button is not so good for me so I guess that's out of the window, Shame as that large screen is tempting.
I really love the style of the Lumias (800-900) and the 820 seems to have gone away from the traditional Lumia image, Also battery life on the wifes 820 is not too great,
The 920 is the only thing that is on that path and it has a larger screen than the 820 and 8x.
As for the HTC8x I have no idea and never used one but expandable storage of the 820 and Samsung would be handy,
I think my only hope is that rather than upgrading through O2 I try maybe Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U in the hope they will be stocking the 920 on the O2 network early in March, I think 32gb is enough for songs and stuff at least for now,
Failing that I am still a bit stuck, Cheers. :fingers-crossed:
Just had a chat with an O2 advisor for all that it's worth and they said O2 will be stocking the Lumia 920 for my upgrade in March and to keep checking the coming soon link etc, Great news if it's true, If not I guess it will be a sim free handset and a re-mortgage :crying:

Just a suggestion...if you can wait, that is....
If I myself would be upgrading to WP8, I would most definitely wait for Mobile World Congress due to other phones being announced then. There are rumors that Nokia is developing 920 successors and if my hunches are correct, they will be announced next month. -However, realistically they would only be announcing the phones...I'm sure there are a few/several months off from release time.
Soooo, that is just my 2 cents. If you don't really care for that then maybe Samsung is the route to go. However again, this could be entitled as my own opinion...Samsung/HTC seem to focus more on the droid side than what they do with WP7/(8?)...From experience with owning previous WP7 Samsung/HTC devices, don't expect too much in terms of "extra" WP8 satisfaction from these OEM's -compared to Nokia, that is.
Anyway...I wish you luck on your quest to finding a WP for you!
Thanks for all the input, I am going to see if O2 keep to their word for a Lumia 920 in March, Think sticking with Nokia would be the best deal seeing as they are 100% committed to WP, It would also be interesting to see what is around the corner too so for now my options are still open, Things hopefully can only get better now wp8 has had its teething problems and fixes are being made. :good:

[Q] Frightened Old Guy in need of upgrade to WP 8

Firstly I am getting older, thus I just lack the knowledge you younger smarter folk have. So I would like to know what my options are when you see my needs.
I would like a larger screen, as the phone I have now is just too small 3.7" on my HTC Radar. Due to age and other I am starting to loose my sight, so I think a 5 or 6 inch screen would fit my needs. I also think I read somewhere that with WP8 and it's update to GDR3 there are added settings for someone who has poor eyes. I have looked at a Galaxy Note 2, but I just do not like Android.
I always buy my phones outright, as I never lock into a plan, and I prefer to run pay as you go. Now from everything I can find online as of yet no Mobile companies here in Canada have said they will carry the new Nokia phones ( correct me if I am wrong), so I guess I will have to buy unlocked. But which site would be best....that ships to Canada.
Lastly I am through Wind Mobile here in Canada on a $40/month Unlimited prepay plan that I love!! So What phone will work with the network I am on???
Do I have any hope of ending up with a phone that will fit me, or will I have to change to a Note 2 or 3 ???
The largest-screen WP8 device that I *know* is available right now is the Samsung ATIV S, at 4.8" with a 1280x720 display. As you mentioned, yes, there are settings to scale up text size and such. I bought mine from Amazon (it was intended for TELUS but SIM-unlocked from the factory with no external branding). There are other sites, such as Expansys, which are also known for offering international shipping on phones.
Nokia has announced two new phones with huge screens, the Lumia 1520 (http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia1520) which has a 6" screen and 1920x1080 resolution (but will run a high price), and the Lumia 1320 (http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia1320) which has the same 6" screen but at "only" 1280x720. The 1320 is a mid-range (in features and price) alternative, though its specs are still respectable; 1GB of RAM (enough for all WP8 apps), 8GB internal storage + microSD (cramped but you can put all your photos and such on the card), dual-core CPU but clocked at 1.7GHz. The camera is a low-ish end 5MPixels, but you get the Nokia photo apps and the optics are probably better than most other comparably mid-range phones will have, and it does have a (VGA-res only) front-facing camera too.
As for where to buy it... I'm just going to recommend doing some searching online. There will be options, if not yet, then soon.

Many many Thanks GoodDay !!!
I would have held out for the 1520 or the 1320, but as I saw online they will not work on Wind. So I ended up getting a Nokia 1020.
So I have gone from WP7.8 to 8 and a 3.7" screen to 4.5" with the text size pushed up. So far it looks as if this will fit my needs. As there is still room on the slide bar to make the text even bigger as my sight goes from bad to worse. :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Should I get a Lumia 520?

hey guys
ive been using a nexus s for the past few years, and i've enjoyed android, but ive realized to get a fast android you need to spend money. nexus s is good, but ive found it really slow and painful. also its broken now.
so what i now want to know is should i get a windows phone? ive heard they are fast and dont have to be very expensive. ive been looking at the lumia 520 and it looks pretty damn good for its price. if theres something better for about $200 australian please let me know here
The 520 is well worth it's money. Sure, you have to sacrifice a couple of things, but it's still miles ahead of similarly priced Android devices.
My sister bought one recently, she switched from Galaxy Mini, so obviously she's impressed with the phone's performance. Hell, I have an 820 for about a year now, and I was impressed with the 520. It really is a solid device all around, it even got the "Best low-cost smartphone award" at the MWC, so that tells you something.
520 is definitely a good starting point for trying out WP. On the other hand, you could go for the 620, it's similarly priced, but has some advantages. Have a look online and compare them and you'll see what suits you best...
Yeah.... not sure what the price of something like the 620 is in Aus, but it's worth looking around a bit. There aren't that many WP8 devices anyhow; you could basically compare them all on one page if you ignore minor variations.
The 520 is one of the lowest-end WP8 devices out there. It lacks quite a few things that are otherwise standard, like a camera flash LED, and has the minimum RAM that Microsoft allows (which means some games will not run on it). On the other hand, it performs all the core features of the OS, and runs most apps, quite well.

thats good to hear, thanks. ive done a bit more googling and just found out nokia has released the lumia 525, which has 1gb of ram compared to the 520's 512mb. the most annoying thing is it hasnt been released in australia yet. do you know if a windows phone like this bought online (unlocked) would work here... ive had problems with flashing the wrong radios on my nexus before, is there something similar that could occur in the windows os? ive always been cautious with buying online and there always seems to be a bigger risk with support and returning products

According to my research, Australia uses GSM-900 and 1800 bands, as does all of Europe, Africa, middle east and most of Asia. So if you're planning on buying the phone online, make sure it supports these two bands and that it's carrier unlocked and unbranded. As for 3G, Australia uses bands 1, 5 and 8. Other than that, you should be fine.
I forgot to mention the 525, so if you can, get that instead of the 520. Although RAM is the only difference, at least you'll be able to play all games, and it costs mostly the same.

Not really, someone else would probably be of more help than me...
I've had my 521 for few months now and have been very happy with it. Its the sister phone of the 520.
Sent from my RM-917_nam_usa_100 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I got mine (ATIV S, which is one of the more hackable WP8 models) off Amazon, but there are plenty of options.
I have the Lumia 520.. definitely worth the money. Camera is extremely good despite lack of flash, and it feels faster than my Nexus 4 more often than not.

Hey, I recommend you very much, I have a Lumia 520 and it's pretty cool.
200$ is very much, you can get it for 60$ (for AT&T, with unlock code $90): http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Lumia-520-GoPhone-AT/dp/B00E45043A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393866160&sr=8-1&keywords=lumia+520
I would recommend Lumia 525. It is running Black (GDR3+Nokia features) and have 1GB RAM but has no LED flash. You may also look to 820 that has a better display and cam and priced about 280$ US in Russia (or 10000ք (Russian roubles)) also it`s no longer produced so you`ll probably need to find it
I like my Lumia 520 but the lack of a file manager, flash, and a better selection of apps were a bit disappointing. Also every time I turn on my phone I get an SD card warning even though my SD card is perfectly healthy and fine and works in both my computer and my secondary android phone. I reallllly am hoping 8.1 dramatically improves the phone.

Yes I realize my phone is most likely defective in that regard but I was not saying its a problem in the entire line of Lumias or even this specific model, just my personal experience. As for the last part about 8.1 improving the phone, that was just an in general thought, I really hope the new update improves everything I love about the phone and fixes what I do not. Also can anyone recommend a good music player with good playlist building support? The default music app is kind of convoluted in creating playlists right now.
Hi there, and good to see another potential convert!
I'm Kenneth, and I've been using a Nokia Lumia 620 for almost a year now, and I have been a Nokia user from the womb 'til the tomb. I've used the Lumia 710 as well for about half a year prior to my 620, so almost 1.5 years using Windows Phone. I have used both Android and iOS and have settled for Windows Phone because it just felt natural to me.
Anyway, enough of romanticizing my relationship with my Lumia 620. However, the Lumia 620 has the same internals as the Lumia 520, i.e. CPU, RAM, storage. Even though the specs are absolute bare minimums on the Lumia 520 and the Lumia 620, I've noticed that those phones are extremely snappy. They run majority of apps from the Store, however, not all that require 1GB+ RAM, which is a small minority. Furthermore, usually Windows Phone apps that require 1GB of RAM will get optimized to run on low-mem devices.
If you disregard what the specifications look like on paper, however, my phone has barely lagged with Windows Phone even though it uses the bare-minimum specs. Using Windows Phone is a very rewarding experience with constant updates that are quite uniform between all Windows Phone devices, with a few pretty quirks from Nokia if you have the Lumia series devices. Also, along with a fast and snappy OS, it looks beautiful and simple. Everything works and is quite logical. It is a difference to Android and iOS, a fresh face, which gives it a somewhat unorthodox approach to a smartphone UI. The apps bundled are also good value-adds.
Currently at **** Smith the Lumia 520 is on sale for $99 locked to Telstra in Australia. However, I am not sure if the offer has expired yet. Typically it's $149 outright. The only alternative I can think of is the HTC 8S which only has 4GB internal memory which is a suicide mission on Windows Phone, whereas the Lumia 520 has 8GB. So nothing is better there. However, it is a more rewarding experience using Nokia for WP because Nokia puts a lot of effort into the Lumia series compared to HTC and Samsung.
That's all I have to say, but hope it's all logical. Would definitely recommend a Lumia 520 mate, for that price range. However, a Lumia 620 might be a better bet with the front facing camera and the LED flash - if that matters to you because I chose 620 > 520 because of that factor. However, Lumia 620 is a bit fatter, and the screen is smaller, hence making it look a tad chubby.
Good luck with your phone choice, and I hope you enjoy being a Lumian/Windows Phone user when you do purchase one.
Oh, I almost forgot - if you need 1GB RAM, I would recommend checking out the Lumia 525 from http://www.kogan.com.au/ which is about $20 more than the 520 on the same site. It comes unlocked, runs more apps than the Lumia 520/620. Choose that phone if camera flash and front facing camera isn't important from the 620.
Kind regards,
kunafpls

Also every time I turn on my phone I get an SD card warning even though my SD card is perfectly healthy and fine and works in both my computer and my secondary android phone. I reallllly am hoping 8.1 dramatically improves the phone.

A bit of a necro but I just noticed this thread in my secondary email, and I'd like to say I have this SD card problem as well on the 525 I did end up buying. The issue could have arisen when the card actually physically got jammed in the slot, and I had to remove it with tweezers. I'd test it with other SD cards but my only other ones are formatted to my PSP. It does get really annoying sometimes.

Help - maybe buying a Windows Phone?

Well, I'm actually pretty satisfied with my HTC Sensation, but as I'm using Windows 8.1 on my PC and my Tablet is used for Android-Gaming, I was considering buying a Windows Phone.
I don't want to make too much steps back from my Sensation and as I found out, many Windows Phone HTC-Devices lack of microSDHC-Slot and GPS functionality, which I find neccessary.
I tried PDAdb, but except a bunch of Nokia Phones, which mostly all had a less display-res than my Sensation, there was no clear answer for me.
I don't need dual sim and a better Cam than my Sensation would be nice.
From the Uprade Standpoint - In don't know, how many Windows Phone 7 Devices get/got Windows Phone 8 or 8.1, so help would be fine.
In short, I'm looking for Whindows Phone Device, that has nearly the same, maybe a bit better Specs than my sensation, a better Cam and no need for dual sim.
Thanks in advance for any advices.
Okay... let's see...
What you want is a phone that has the same or better than your HTC sensation, right?
Screen: it has to be 720x1280 or better
Cam: It could be 8 MP but with better optics and algorithm.
MicroSD and GPS is a must...
With the config you mentioned, you basically get to choose the following phones:
Nokia Lumia 830
Nokia Lumia 1520
Samsung Ativ S
Samsung Ativ SE
Samsung Ativ S Neo
All other Nokia phones have the features you requested except the SD-card slot.
Now, all of those Windows Phones come with Windows Phone 8.0, which is upgradable to 8.1 and to 10.0 next year. Windows Phone 7 IS NOT upgradable to 8.0, so don't bother looking for those phones.
By the way, Windows Phone is very optimized so it will flow like silk no matter the model of the phone.
The Lumia 1320's camera might be a bit of a downgrade, but otherwise fits your list.
The HTC One M8 (for Windows) has a bit of an odd camera that you might call a "sidegrade", but is otherwise excellent.
There really need to be more phones with high specs *and* an SD card.
How about Lumia 730? Great display and decent camera.
Knowing the carrier is useful. I'm digging my new M8 though. I'll likely get a 128GB card soon and load this thing up with music.

M8 with Windows is the way to go
