MAXX Volume Hack for most Tab2's FOR ROOTED DEVICES ONLY!! - Galaxy Tab 2 7" Android Development

For starters,
Credit where credit is due, xda member "tobbbie" http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=393455 informed me of this and after some Goggling I found the original thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722136
UPDATE see post 52 on page 6 for KitKat files UPDATE
With that thread I made a copy of the default_gain.conf for my P3113 and made the modifications.
This Hack comes in 2 forms "MAXX Volume" and "BOOSTED Volume"
Maxx Volume has the value turn up all the way to 63 getting the most out of it, but in listening today I feel like sometimes may have a slight distortion, so I created a second one just now called Boosted Volume that only goes to 61 instead of 63 with the hope that the slight reduction will remove any signs of distortion but won't be able to test it till tomorrow.
This SHOULD work on all the Tab 2's as is but make a backup of your current version of the default_gain.conf file before starting.
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download which of the 2 you want and unzip the file
2. Copy the file (default_gain.conf) to the internal storage of your tablet
3. Now using a file browser with FULL root privileges copy the file to System / ETC replacing the one in there now, reset file permissions if necessary (I didn't have to using ES File Explorer)
4. Reboot the tablet and check that all sounds are working
5. Profit
Warning this will signifigantly increase the max volume of your headphones and listening to headphones at such high a level for extended periods CAN AND WILL cause damage to your hearing!!!
This Hack is primarily for those of us that use the tablet as an audio source to run into the Head Unit of our car stereos.
The Maxx Volume is tested and working on a P3113 but should work on all versions of the Tab 2's (so long as the ROM your running has a default_gain.conf file in it for you to overwrite), Please report in if it works for you on other versions of the Tab 2
Odds are this will probably only work on Stock based ROMS as this is a Samsung specific tweak and non stock based ROMs (from what I've seen) don't appear to have the file in there system at all.
EDIT: I've added 2 additional files that are for ONLY NON STOCK ROMS like CM, AOKP or others based off of them. The difference in the install is this file needs to go into System / ETC / Sounds, I have not tested these personally but give it a try and let me know if it works.
EDIT 2: I've added a new file called Revised Stock Boosted, I did some testing and this is almost a perfect match volume wise switching between my tablet and the headunits CD player (tested using the same song). This was my ultimate goal to match the output of the tab to the volume of the HU when playing CD's, of course this is for my radio, but you can try it and see if it matches yours.

I thnik this goes in themes and apps but im not sure.
Anyways. Nice! Will it work on cyanogenmod/cm-based?

I wasn't totally sure where to put it, but the original thread I got the info from was in Development for another device.
I haven't played with CM enough to say for sure (I'm running a stock based ROM), but all you need to do is go into that folder using a root file browser and if there is a default_gain.conf file in there then it should work.

Nice, i noticed a definite increase. It works well on stock, but there wasn't the right file for the ROM I'm running. However, i was able to find the sound config file, and edit it with the values from your hack. i went to etc/sounds/ and edited the file called expressowifi.
And it worked, i did it for both speakers and headphones.
Edit: Oops i must of did something wrong when i pasted the code. I just found where it said speakers changed the output value to 63 and did the same for headphones.
Thanks.

Hey man.. U don't knw what u have done for us.. I tried ur boosted non stock mod in my cm based rom (slimbean).. N it works like a charm.. I definitely feel increase in volume.. I didn't try maximum mod as u said earlier it has some kind of distortion.. Massive thanks to u man.. Amazing..
Come on guys.. Tried it.. As we all know custom rom has bit lesser sound volume as compared to stock.. So tried his mod.. U will definitely pleased after using it..
Download boosted or maximum non stock mod.. Extract it to sdcard card.. Go to system/etc/sound n replace the file with the downloaded one.. If u find espressorf in the place of espressowifi in system/etc/sound.. Jus rename the downloaded file matching with ur default file and simply replace it.. Set permission.. Reboot.. Enjoy..

PAC is a NON stock ROM, try using one of the ones listed for NON-stock and copy it to system/etc/sound replacing the expressowifi file, I have already said default_gain.conf does NOT work with CM or AOKP and PAC is a combination of those 2 and Paranoid android (which would also be NON-stock based) all of those builds have to be tried with the NON-stock options.

I realize that PAC is non-stock. I was just confirming that there was no default_gain.conf file. BUT I think when I downloaded the file from the OP the non-stock files were not there yet. I installed the non-stock expressowifi and the audio is great. Thanks for your helpful comments. Sorry you had to repeat yourself but if you didn't, I might not have looked back and noticed the newer files.

I used non-stock boosted volume file on my CM10.1 tab. It work and louder than before, it's like night and day. :good: :victory: I didn't try Max volume yet maybe later. It's already awesome with boosted volume. Thanks !!!!

They where added after I was informed about the file differences between stock and non-stock so I made the mods for them aswell, here's to hoping the ROM devs notice it and start incorporating it into future releases. It was a footnote in the OP so it's not surprising you didn't see it.

I've got some more testing to do but I hope to release a final revised version of this before the weekend gets here as I'll be going on vacation, this will be a mix of the previous versions a sort of MAX boosted (boosted pushed to just under the threshold that gets the harshness I heard in the MAX version).

good work ... i'm with PSN Stock Rom ... and i see the difference

I'm using SlimRom 6.5 and there is no default_gain.conf in etc\sound.
But there is a file called espressorf
It can be edited in the same way. Works like a charm.

I think this mod would be great if you could add more volume steps to make the volume control smoother. I tried to search for such a mod (which I had in my Xperia phone) but can't find something similar for the tab 2. Thanks

Thanks man! It's great to see more dev work on the VZW LTE tabs. Does this rom have a fix for the "volume warning" issue when playing media over line output? My tab cuts volume to 70% and displays a warning about how loud volume can damage your hearing. I use my tab in my car, so it's a right pain to have to adjust the volume every other song.
Updated OP with v1.1.

I haven't looked at it, but I know what your talking about. I only have to change the volume once on mine, though. I'll see if I can find anything on it.
Hey Hyde...
Love the rom... working great for me.. I got a couple things though..
as a request.. is there anyway you can look into making the ext sd card the main storage device so we can get more room on this tab?
and idk if its just me or not.. but I'm having very bad battery life running this rom.. I love the rom, don't get me wrong.. but my tab is dying overnight for the last few days since I flashed this rom.. I have no idea why? maybe the kernal that is included?
I am looking in to the SD card thing whenever I have time.
I noticed this battery drain too... not sure what it is. I'm gonna be testing it tonight. I doubt its the kernel as the kernel itself is 100% stock. Only mods are to some of the configuration files, not the zimage.

Ok great.. thanks hyde..
good luck on finding the culprit that is draining our batteries! hopefully you can figure it out
Ok, So I know it's not the kernel. Flahsed it over a restored stock J1 base and battery only drained 1% in 1 hour. So there's something screwy in my ROM.
Scott released a ROM also that isn't too much different than this, and honestly probably better haha. This is my first ROM ever, so go easy on me
Scotts ROM is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2022879. You can flash the DecafKernel (based off of Scotts init.d unsecure kernel) over on top of it for custom boot animation support.
Ok, so it IS my kernel..................... Still looking into it.
Updated OP. Check Change Log for changes. Battery drain workaround so your battery won't die over night.
It's not ur kernel. I been running it for 2 days now. With out charging my tablet. It's j1 update crashing with open source code kernel.. Therefore you can't use this kernel on the j1. Sorry
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
It was actually. And it's based off the J1 unsecure kernel from Scott.
When you unpack the boot.img, under the ramdisk directory there is a file: init.rc
In this file there are several sections:
service powersnd .../.../...
...
service samsungani .../.../...
...
You have to add a 'service bootanim /system/bin/bootanimation' and another group of code that I can't remember off the top of my head. If you remove powersnd and samsungani, OR you remove bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg, the kernel defaults to the performance governor. With this in mind, service powersnd, service samsungani, bootsamsung.qmg, and bootsamsungloop.qmg must all remain as part of the ROM. I don't know why, but I've found another thread for the S3 with the same issue. Now I'm sure if it was compiled from source with these modifications it'd be a different story, but I haven't had the time to dig through that yet.
I'm running this latest release with the J1 kernel and J1 system and it's running great
OK I'm pretty stupid I guess but I didn't presume I would have any issues. I tried to go from this ROM to my backup of the J1 using CWM recovery. Now I'm pretty sure I've soft bricked the tablet because recovery wiped system but errored out on writing the /system backup. So I can't restore the backup I have and flashing this ROM again does nothing because its not a full /system.
Anyhow I'm gonna wait till I get home from family dinner and try to break it out of a recovery boot loop with a fresh ODIN flash...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
That is odd. Perhaps your backup got corrupted? But then cwm should have caught it via md5 check... I've reverted to an older cwm several times and haven't had an issue.
Let us know the what happens.

You can try the next approach. A butcher-like way of doing things if it ends up working:
· Make sure you take out all of the themes from your ROM, if any. They cannot be odexed and will stop the progress.
· Install your custom ROM on your phone.
· Odex your ROM via CWM or ADB using the suited method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264611.
· If everything goes smoothly, extract the .apk and .odex files from the ROM.
· Put the files back in the ROM zip. You can add your themes back at this point.
Not an elegant solution by any means, I know.

As for how much free space you need when running a script, I'm afraid I don't know the answer for CM9. However you should have no problems of the like with SystemCleanup.

Well, it appears for these soundpacks to work, the original sounds have to be present. I usually delete most of the media files and some system apps before flashing a ROM so a lot of these sounds weren't working for me. So what I did was extract them to system/media/ui and set permissions, and that did it.
They are a tad loud, though. Otherwise, cool idea.

Check the links in the first post. You have to create an xml file to correspond to the sound files, I think, and zip them up. And they have to be in ogg format.

[MOD] [init.d script] disable BCL [MM 6.0.1] 10-1-15

Credits to DespairFactor who wrote the original script, Original Thread Here, I just modified it for the Nexus 6 running MM29S 6.0.1
Basically BCL checks your device's battery level, temperature, etc and limits frequency, in my case whenever I hit 35% battery it would throttle down the CPU to 2.0ghz, some custom kernels out there disable it, some don't, so instead of bugging a dev to implement it in a kernel I found that DespairFactor made a very simple script to disable it for the Nexus 5X, just make sure you're rooted and your current kernel supports init.d scripts.
Steps:
Download Zip and extract the file "00DisableBCL" inside.
Place the file "00DisableBCL" in /etc/init.d/
Change permissions of the file "00DisableBCL" to 0744
Reboot
Done
Just wanted to add that I am on Nitro Rom. When I use this ROM with Flash kernel and flashing the disable-throttle.zip file on xda N6 forum I get no dropped volumes on full blast when playing music. However I get better battery life with Nitro Rom and its Nitro kernel. So I tried this file and followed the above steps and it works perfectly on my N6 with Nitro Rom and Nitro kernel. I am currently as I type this playing Journey full blast at 100% volume with battery at 34%.
In case anyone wants the disable-throttle file here is the link:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/mod-disable-throttling-battery-low-t3440814
Thank you OP for making this modified file! Much appreciated.
Edit 1 - I made a flashable zip of the BCL disable. Seems to work on my phone when I removed the one I manually moved, and then flashed this one. See attached. If any issues let me know, thanks.

This my first ROM for this device. Hope you enjoy. It is a stock based ROM based on T210 firmware with added features. Works for both T210 and T210R. Keep checking back, this ROM is ever-evolving and constantly being updated.
***Note***
With the 210R kernel you will gain the IR, but lose Vibrate sound profile option. (In notifications pulldown and power menu.)

Thanks. I was looking for something to breath some life in to this old tablet. I installed it and so far its going well. I like the voice notifications.
rom works well and is fast. is there a way to turn off voice notifications?
Yes. It's not actually voice notifications... I changed the lock, unlock, and boot sound. I think the lock and unlock ones only work when it is on swipe. If you use a pattern or pin I don't think it does. You can turn off lock sounds in settings or use root browser and navigate to /system/media/audio/ui/ there you will see the lock, unlock, and power on. (Lock_none_effect.ogg, PowerOn.ogg, and Unlock_none_effect.ogg) You can either delete them or rename them. You will also see the original sounds, I renamed them with .bak at the end so if you want the stock sounds back delete the others then rename the files ending in .bak. All you have to do is delete the .bak off of the name.
Also, these files I used are not in any special format, I simply downloaded them from Zedge and used Root Browser to rename them. They are actually mp3 files renamed to ogg. You can change them to whatever you want, just make sure you rename it exactly how the original was named and change permissions of the files to 0644 before you reboot. It is 3 checks down the first column and just the top check of the middle column. Leave the rest unchecked.
Let's try this.
Maybe it will bring new life to my kids tablet.

Just download the zip and install with TWRP. It will install a system.img and a boot.img.

Great rom, thanks for your work!
Happy to see some development for this tablet again! I will try this out some day
*Edit: Can't you add like a way to switch between a few different themes, like in the systemUI folder, you could have the other themes but with another ending (like Icon1.IconTheme) and then it would rename itself to the file that it's overwriting
Awesome work

@RealWelder you don't know how much your ROM has improved my wife's T210.

No problem. I appreciate the kind words. I was late to the party...only got this thing about 6 months ago...really cheap from a friend. As long as I have it I will keep modding it, though. At least until I can port something else like MIUI ROM or something.

Yes, It is set up to install a raw boot.img and a raw system.img, so no need to wipe data. Just cache and dalvik.

@RealWelder Any plans to introduce your own OTA updates system into settings?
There is absolutely no problem with downloading and flashing an update but just for convenience so to say
