Just got a refurbished HTC One. Everything is great but... - Sprint HTC One (M7)

I just noticed I can see PM up on the top right side of the screen and some notifications in the top left corner during full screen apps, especially with a full grey screen. I didn't see those a couple hours ago when I got it.
Did I seriously just burn in my screen already? Is this normal for a "new" One? Or should I be freaking out?
I did nothing out of the ordinary since I got it. Just rooted it, restored apps, put it on the charger for a bit. That's all.

I see 127 views and no replies. No one wants to touch this one lol! I'm taking it back to Sprint in the morning. I shouldn't be getting burn in less than 24 hours into using any phone, refurbished or not.

Yea,i agree, take it back and make them replace it,it should last longer than 24 hours, wether you flash it or not,im upgrading to this from the EVO 4G,in 2 months, but it will be a new one, hahaha,i just cant wait,so i can start to dev for the One now and maybe port over my 4 kornerz rom.

I would take it back as well.
Also, pay attention to the screen. In my One, the speakers busted (same as my OG Evo, Evo 3D and Hero. Htc makes ****ty speakers) I also have a dead pixel so I filed an insurance claim. Today I received the new One and the display is garbage. The whites look dingy and yellow like a cheaper version. It doesn't compare at all to my current One.
I'm gonna send it back and try my luck again =\

Nope. You're lucky then because HTC speakers are cheap and it isn't just me who says so. Here is a quick google search but you can dig deeper and see for yourself. I never really cared because replacing the speaker was easy...but with the HTC One it is a repair nightmare.

Glad your issue is getting resolved! :good:

So apparently this thing isn't near impossible to repair if they are sending out refurbs as replacements.

I'll halfway attempt to break it down, but I doubt you'll understand.
There are people who break down how difficult it would be for the average consumer to do things such as repairs for these phones (hint:ifixit). The average consumer isn't gonna own all the tools/equipment or possess the knowledge/skill as a professional. This is true in probably everything you'll ever get repaired, otherwise mechanics have been ripping people off for years.
This phone scores as low as possible when it comes to repairs. It doesn't mean that professionals can't repair it. Ifixit isn't gonna breakdown how easy it is for HTC or other phone repair people, why the *@*! would anyone care about that? They are breaking it down for the not so skilled.

I got my phone replaced once already as well, but Sprint said they DO NOT use refurbished phones as replacements until the phone has been released for 6 months.
But what was odd is that my replacement phone didn't come with a box, so I dialed ##786# and checked the "reconditioned status" which stated "none." I wonder if this replacement is not a refurb, then why did it come with no box?

Sprint doesn't handle it, Asurion does. They'll tell you it could be new or refurbished. It all depends on what they have. Both of mine came with a box, but that doesn't mean they're new.
I'm about to send ny second replacement back. The screen is just too yellow and dingy looking. It's a damn shame I have to file an insurance claim and pay a deductible on a month old phone.

To update, my 2nd refurb seemed nice enough. But after having it a couple days, I've noticed the screen colors are pretty blown out and definitely not like it should be. Colors are as funky as they can be, and the screen itself is way too bright. And for insult to injury, the phone is unable to connect to 4G LTE. So back to Sprint I go!

Dust Under Screen...

I've always heard about this problem with htc and getting dust underneath their screens but I never thought it would happen to me on my first HTC phone.
Has anyone found any video tutorials or guide on how to take apart the Vivid?
Sent from my HTC Vivid
I had a similar experience...
Okay, here we go:
I noticed dust under my screen the day after I got it--definitely a defect. I finally had a chance to take it back to the corp. store where I got it last Saturday and spoke to a CSR. She obviously had no clue what to do, so she went and spoke to her manager, when she came back she explained that her manager told her that it was "just something that would happen over time" and that it was essentially "normal" to accumulate dust under the screen of a $500-$600 device...
I was surprised at a such an explanation and could see that she was nervous about then having to tell me that her manager was not willing to replace it because he didn't consider it a defect (since he considered it to be a "normal" thing) and that the best thing to do was to "just buy a case for it"... I didn't feel like arguing, so I ended up speaking to customer care, who was surprised by what the manager said, and called the store and basically told me that the manager explained the situation and I could exchange the phone for any other device, just not the same make and model... This was the point were I got pretty pissed off
I called HTC and spoke to a rep who said it definitely was not "normal" for this to happen... Well, I wanted to inform AT&T of this, so I tried customer care again and spoke to a very understanding lady that totally agreed with me about the issue--that, defect or not, I should be able to exchange the phone. She wasn't totally sure how to help so she connected me with tech support/warranty claims. The girl I spoke to in that department agreed with me to, saying that she had "never noticed an issue like this in any touchscreen device" that she ever owned. She was nice enough to call another corp. store in the area, because "obviously that manager you ran into today doesn't know what he's talking about", and worked out a replacement.
The moral of the story is, try and get that sucker replaced before busting it open and voiding the warranty. Tell them that you didn't shell out hundreds of dollars for dust under the screen... I really hope that helps!
TLDR: Noticed dust under screen day after purchase, took back to store, was denied replacement because manager considered dust under screen "normal occurrence over a period of time", called HTC and confirmed that this was NOT a "normal occurrence", called customer care back and ended up with a replacement via another corp. store. So try and get it replaced before busting it open and voiding the warranty..
Edit: I am aware that people have noticed dust under screens of other HTC devices over a period of time, but I still don't think that this should be considered "normal" as a way for a store manager to weasel his way out of replacing a week old phone..
After taking out the Vivid from my pocket, even more dust got under the screen.

That really sounds like a defect to me...
I feel your pain. I had the same issue with the Inspire 4G with dust getting underneath the screen. It's like getting dust under the screen protector except you can't get it out. What I ended up doing is returning it within the 30 day period and purchased another one. That's when I started using a case with my Inspire and dust no longer gets in. It's kind of funny considering I'm using a case with my Vivid and Inspire not for protection (I'm VERY careful and never drop my phone) but for the fact that it keeps the crevices around the screen covered so that dust won't get in.
I'm primarily a Samsung device owner since I started using Android and never had this problem. I thought HTC was build quality king?

Looks like they don't fuse their screens properly. If I get this problem when I get my Vivid, I'll return it instantly and get another one.
If it happens 3 times within the 30 days, I'll get the skyrocket.
Well I bought my phone off contract so I can't exactly return it. I'll just have to wait until someone makes a guide on how to disassemble the phone.

+1. Even phones that are bought offcontract are still subject to the 30 day return window. That is what I was told from my corp. Store when I bought my Inspire offcontract at the end of Feb. It don't matter how you paid for it, if it has dust under the screen, you are within 30 days and you have the same right as someone who upgraded to the Vivid to get a replacement.

Ah crap. Black dots under screen.

Didn't notice it until I turned up the brightness (I just bragged about having a flawless device less than a minute ago) and I noticed dark spots in the screen.
I'm going to call them up and see what they say. Sucks. It doesn't look like much, but it's very obvious when scrolling since it doesn't move with the rest of the screen. Only the circled area is affected. It looks like a dead pixel at first, but it's much bigger and has a "blur" around it.

No black dots on mine. 16GB received today. Strangely enough, mine had no plastic covering on the bezel, while my friend's 8GB model did (4 small strips, one for each side).

Through Google directly. They are handling the devices themselves for the time being. Not like with the SGN and Nexus 7 devices, where you had to go through Samsung or Asus directly.
Google is probably handling RMA's for now, but later on it will be handed over to LG With crappy support, and they will ask you to pay shipping.
I thought RMA's for Nexus devices were always done by Google?

The RMA process with Google is very good. I had to send two Nexus 7s back and it was an easy process. The only issue I had was that I didn't receive a TNT shipping label with my first replacement so I actually had 3 devices for 2 days while I waited for the shipping label.

You need to return it in "good" condition (scratches are fine, but no cracks). Software wise, mess with it all you want, then
Code:

Review from a former LL3 (Received Yesterday)

So I got my phone yesterday evening at 7pm from the UPS driver and of course it was the latest I had ever received a package!
Anyways, all I have to say is that getting a phone from the "second wave" seems to have been a great thing because I have had ZERO issues at all so far. Right away I looked over the entire phone for any cosmetic defects that have been reported and nothing was found wrong. The screen IMO is amazing and colors look perfect as well. There is NO yellow tint whatsoever and I even had my GF look at it to make sure. Battery is already better than my former Blaze 4G and that's saying something. This phone is definitely a fresh start from the touchwiz ui and made me realize that was really kiddish looking like IOS IMO. The camera takes pictures just fine although I am still trying to figure out all the features on it. The phone got pretty warm on initial start up when all of my apps were being installed from the Play store but after that, normal browsing and such did not make it any warmer than anything i have felt before in other phones. Finally, there is NO buzzing in my earpiece at all, and yes my hearing is good, this again I had my GF check too so I knew I was not crazy.
So honestly, I think that maybe the second wave was produced better or something I really don't know, but I encourage anyone to get this phone if they have been debating because of other peoples "issues". Thanks
That's great to hear. I also ordered a N4 from the second batch and I can't wait for it to be here. Nice review
Mine does rattle. Got it yesterday. But I could care less about that. Loving the phone so far. Just want to be able to order a bumper and get my best skins ever in so I don't worry so much about using it.

Grats on getting your phone; you're gonna love it.
I got mine a week after the initial ordering and my phone is perfect, so I don't know about any second waves or anything like that. There are always going to be phones with manufacturing-related defects; that's why they do exchanges. Don't get hung up on a few people who think their phones are s**t.

I got my 2 Nexus 4's yesterday. The one seems fine, but I have an issue with the 2nd one. During calls, the earpiece buzzes while making sounds. The earpiece does not make any sounds when it is off like a lot of people seem to report. This is strictly a problem during calls and it sounds like the speaker is blown. It does rattle a bit when I'm putting it on a table or whatnot, but that doesn't really bother me.
Called support yesterday, and they were supposed to send me an e-mail with instructions on sending this one back and getting a replacement, but haven't actually received anything from them.
I seem to have some kind of knack for getting bad phones from Google. I had ordered 2 Galaxy Nexus phones when they came out, and ended up getting a replacement for one of the phones because there was dust in the camera. The replacement had the wifi go out, so I had to get that one replaced. The third one actually had a similar buzzing issue with the earpiece but it wasn't as bad, and I was tired of dealing with them at that point, so I lived with it.

I get what you are saying, but he is still literally correct.
I'm sure he could care less, otherwise he wouldn't have an N4. If he cared less:
- he could have not bought the phone
- he could leave it at a bus stop and go on living
- etc. etc.
Now, I'm sure he could care a hell of a lot MORE about it, taking to the internet in fits of rage, driving to Mountain View and knocking on the front door and such. But still, he could also care less.
Just saying.
Received mine yesterday and it has zero flaw. I don't take the mini rattle as one as it comes from the camera (autofocus?) and all the phones I tested since learning that on this forum have it.
For those of you wondering if the bumper is worth 20 euros, it's definitely well made, perfectly fits the look of the phone and prevents the back from direct contact but... well, the phone has a perfect size for my hand and the bumper adds about 0.5 - 0.7 cm in width which makes it awkward to hold. I find myself removing it often when using my phone.
My 2 cents.

HTC One with major light-bleed ...

Just got in my dev edition M7 earlier today (04-22-13).
Phone is very beautiful, well built and almost seem perfect until a few minutes ago whiles I was laying in bed playing around with it, when I notice the long light-bleed coming from the lower right corner.
I was like NOO this is not happening!!! After having waited for so long.
It is really annoying because of the length and brightness of the bleed.
Tomorrow I will definitely call up HTC or LetsTalk for a replacement.
See pics.
Hope no one else has had this major defect.

i just checked mine and i do not have any bleed. I also played the HD dark knight trailer and no bleed confirmed. *phew* ....
Did you drop it or bang it against something. In that last picture I can't tell if that's a smudge or a chip in the glass on the edge of the display in the area.
No. All I did was unbox the phone, took some photos of the phone to post online. Then I immediately put it inside a clear case. Next I went through the setup and only when I was passed that I noticed the light from the corner.
It was handled like a new born baby from the moment it came out from the box .
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Def get it replaced that's not normal at all there should be no light bleed at all. What is your batch # build date? Should be like FA345 or like SH etc it's on the box that the unit came in on the bottom part.

Wow that's pretty bad. I am sure you will get a replacement. That really sucks though.
I am going to use this phone for a month before I unlock the bootloader. Just in case something happens and it's defective.

No. All I did was unbox the phone, took some photos of the phone to post online. Then I immediately put it inside a clear case. Next I went through the setup and only when I was passed that I noticed the light from the corner.
It was handled like a new born baby from the moment it came out from the box .

One of those photos looks like there is a chip on the lower right of the screen. I can't really make out what that is. picture 9 of 12
Honestly..this is what turns me away from htc... yes the design is amazing but at what cost? I dont know why everyone says it has good build quality...i bet htc will get millions of these back for repairs

Time will tell; it looks like more and more people are complaining about case separation issues as they use them for a few days/weeks.
I'll tell you what I saw: a demo at a store that had been handled a lot (no scratches or dents, so probably not abused), but it looked like hell -- the case was coming apart all around the seams!!
HTC has compromised a lot of things in the last couple of years, and I think they have really compromised build quality now. It might look good brand new, but they don't seem to hold up under normal use like their earlier phones did.
We'll see.
Well I got a prepaid RMA from letstalk and it left this morning for Thursday delivery. Lets see how long the wait will be for a replacement to get out and if an RMA depends on preorders vs stock availability.

I did a cross shipment this morning too. Did you get your shipping e-mail? I was told that they wouldn't know when they would ship mine out.
I don't know what a cross shipment is, but the phone was sent back to letstalk today. Process the RMA directly from their website. It's due for arrival on Thursday. Guess until then I wouldn't be hearing from them. But I will call once I know they receive the defective phone.
Just got off the phone with them after waiting over an hour, they made the shipping label yesterday and will be shipping overnight today. So I should have the replacement by tomorrow.
Called a few minutes ago and the lady said they would have to charge me again if they did a cross shipment. In any case there isn't any phones available until Friday she informed me.
Update: 04-26-2013
Was on a chat with rep from letstalk about my RMA, and was told the following ...
Candra: The exchange order will be processed after the rest of the preorders are being fulfilled once the phones are in stock.
Bernard: serious? that's not fair. I had my pre-order from the 6th ... now I must wait much longer because I received a defective phone?
Candra: We still have orders from the 5th that haven't been fulfilled. I do apologize but these orders do need to be processed first.
Well, from the looks of things, it seems like I might get my replacement in a few weeks!

Hi everybody! My One has been in the service center for a week after getting hard bricked for no reason, and repair hasn't been started yet, and they're giving me an ETA of a week or two more So, if any of you is in any way related to HTC, could you pm me a number or an email ID, which isn't ignored, to talk or send a message to convince htc to get my phone repaired quick or give me a replacement? Talking/chat with any of the higher authorities, who actually care about customers would do.
Thanks
Hopefully I'll get them convinced

Yes, they take that long. It happened with me too and there's nothing you can do about it. Mine is supposed to come on monday...let's see if that actually happens.

But don't carriers in the US replace faulty phones on the spot? Anyways, I'm just too impatient to wait it out.. I'll try whatever I can

I bought my phone with a carrier that I'm no longer with so they aren't doing anything. I was forced to use HTC.
I guess it wasn't that bad since I had a backup.
And the ETA was given by the call center people , who don't know ***t about anything. The service center guys are saying that it may take two weeks or more because of shortage of parts. Why don't they replace the damn phone if they're gonna replace the most expensive parts anyways? Btw, my phone has a faulty mobo, camera, and speakers.

How do you have that many things wrong with the phone? They almost never replace the phone because (according to them) it changes the IMEI number of the phone. It does do that, but how the heck does it even matter? HTC support is useless IMO.

I don't bloody know. I took proper care of the phone, it was never out of a case and it never fell. And believe it or not, this is the third time I'm having a problem with this phone And if the mobo is changed, the IMEI is changed anyways, so what difference does it make? HTC support is always like "I'm sorry sir, but we can't do anything for you right now. Please check back in a week" it driving me crazy

They transfer the IMEI. Apparently it's legal for them to do it, but not us.

Well, no. I got a new IMEI the last time my board was changed, and 3 months of data more from my carrier, so I'm pretty darn sure that at least here they don't

By here, I'm assuming you mean where you live. I guess I asked them to not change it (I would have to get another unlock code) so thats probably why,.
