Not sure how much confidence I have in Gorilla Glass but screen is just over a month old and I see two minor scratches. I babied the hell out of this phone, so I'm not even sure where they came from.
I figured I'd try to "buff" one of the scratches out which worked on my previous phone....not so much here. I used Meguires car polish and lightly rubbed at the scratch. It seemed to lessen the intensity of the scratch but now there is this...haze...where I used the product. If I wipe it away, the phone looks fine. After some use, it almost attracts the dirt/grime and you can see where I polished the screen which leads to me to believe there is some sort of coating I polished off.
Any way to fix this? Should I return it and get a new one?
You definitely polished a coating. There's an oleophobic coating that minimizes oil left behind from our fingers, and it actually also helps in preventing scratches. I'm a little confused from your title. Did the scratch occur while polishing, or did you want to say it's scratched and you want to polish it?

Sorry, it was scratched and I wanted to polish it out. The thing is, there is no evidence of anything until it starts collecting dirt. Otherwise, even under direct light, you can't see any difference.
I'll probably take back...my camera has been giving me issues as well. I'm past the 14 day grace period so I'm not sure what my next steps are.

Like the previous poster said it's oleophobic coating that was removed when you applied the polish. You could reapply it on your screen by using any liquid glass product.
Maybe you can try this? http://liquidglassshield.com/
It's not a real oleophobic coating but it should be practically the same.

Well I polish my screen too, screen protector and I get the same effect. Polishes do that, and they do that on your car as well. They're meant to protect metal so applying it to glass will give you a haze and, not attract dirt but the oil allows it to stick and it will show off more.
How do I know this? I used polish on my windshield. Same tthing. Try to wash it off lightly with soap. The other comments may be right but I think it's mainly the polish that did that

Possibly, but the bare glass underneath will still hold oil like crazy since the olephobic layer is gone there. I use the Oakley hydrophobic lens cleaner solution on my screens that don't have a coating and it works quite well. It definitely makes it easier to wipe oils off and fills in very minor scratches. Of course it's not as good as the gorilla glass coating, and the biggest problem is you have to reapply it once every couple weeks if you are using the screen frequently. Maybe the coating recommend earlier in the thread is better?
I guess alternatively you could just go the extra step and wax the screen... Vehicle wax is pretty good at repelling things but the polish does nothing like that by itself. Not common but neither is the situation

Hey hey, why not get a screen protector? I've gotten one from eBay that's flawless 3 weeks after getting the phone. At least that way, you won't have to worry about the screen anymore; you have a new layer.
Plus the scratches will keep coming. At least when you have some on a screen protector, peel the film off and get s nee one - gone forever. What do you think?

Also, about gorilla glass being easy to scratch, its really still like any other glass. Stuff like sand will still scratch it.
My last phone had GG and I found out that my earring (quartz mineral stone) left little scratches on it, nothing else scratched it though. And it lived in my pocket daily for about a year with no case or screen protector. So GG isnt all that bad, it just wont protect against EVERYTHING.

Mothers wax is where it's at haha. But seriously that's all I use on my vehicle. I always start off saying "I don't need a screen protector" but I always end up with one later... For exactly the reasons you mention! But I hate the way they feel

Haha I'll probably buy one, on sale for me here. Yea I can understand, but the key is to keeping it clean all the time. I have an idea actually, first thing would be to have a lint cloth with u always but if you can get your hands on "stoner invisible glass rain repellent" from a store. I heard about it somewhere in Xda and it is AMAZING. use it for ur car too of course haha but put just a dot or 2 on your screen protector, buff it and you'll never see oil and fingerprints again. If u do, it will be after a couple of days perhaps. It's amazing. Buy it for your car but use it for your phone too

Yeah I actually use that stuff and it is awesome! Never used it on anything but my vehicle though... It's mostly acetone but it does leave behind a repellant coating. The acetone will react with some plastics of screen protectors, but you may be on to something here! Honestly there isn't a better glass cleaner out there :thumbup: maybe even using the Oakey stuff on a screen protector?

I ended up scratching mine too. I thought having a flip case would protect my phone but, I constantly clean my phone screen. I'd say about 10-15 times a day. And just once, there must have been a bit of git or sand on my cloth and it left its mark I have a screen protector on it now. Covers it up nicely.. but knowing it's still there annoys the hell out of me lol

Yea you could try it, why not? Not sure how it works, never used it, but as with anything you will apply on a screen, because with a touchscreen you're poking and rubbing, it will wear off in a few days. 2 more mins of your time for 2-3 days of clear screening, works well o think

^^^ This! This is my worst nightmare... I baby the hell out of my phones and, like you, I clean my screen all day long. I just don't stand smudges and finger prints on it so I use my eye-glasses cloth. And every time I use it I closely inspect it so as not to have some sort of debree on it that could damage the screen... I know, its crazy... All this cleaning and inspecting takes up tens of minutes of my day
Pardon if I'm talking about another product but as far as I know RainX is a brand of wiper blades lol! You clean your screen with a wiper blade?

Lol yes.. but they make a spray treatment that I spray onto a rag and wipe it down with. Leaves a nice slick coating that resists finger prints and I hope scratches a little

Hi there.
As the title reads I got a 3mm long scratch on the display of my galaxy ... the scratch distorts the colours, so it's quite annoying once you notice it (and it's particularly annoying on brighter backgrounds) ... I have absolutely no idea how it happened, as I am using a bag for it all the while it's in my pocket to prevent it from getting scratches...
Soo, my question:
Is there anything I can do to "fix" the scratch?
Once scratch happens, then it pretty much stays there.
Sometime a screen protectors can help hide the scratches make it less noticeable. Other than that there are no way to fix it I suppose.
Good screen protector hide all scratches.

Please don't try this at home!
If the scratch isn't too deep then you may be able to polish it out with some wet/dry sandpaper.
But you may damage the touch screen if you go too deep.

Wet/dry sandpaper is how a clear coat is polished on a car. As I said if it isn't too deep then it's an option. What you are saying is that you are screwed anyway and have to replace it. If the OP is already at that point of frustration, then they could at least try before having to replace the screen.

At first I also thought what a silly idea to use sand paper on glass.
But after googling the web and quick research, it can be done!
Using high grit silicon carbide wet/dry sanding paper can remove scratches from glass.
Though, I wouldn't try it my self but thanks for the pointer.

Screen protector I would recommend to hide the scratches is the Zagg invisible shield.
It is made of polymer that kinda adhere to the screen very tightly help smooth over scratches and make them less noticeable compare to other brand.
BIG BIG DISCLAIMER:
Zagg invisible shield is NOT for everyone. The polymer material can feel sticky and a bit soft. So be warned, it is a love hate relationship when it comes to zagg.

If you change your mobile phone every year then I can understand.
However, my mobile phone lasted me at least 2-3 years each. My previous two was XDA O2 > Samsung Omnia i900 and now Galaxy S

I noticed that the (super) AMOLED displays are relatively cheap in comparison to the traditional LCD screens that you can find on for example the HTC's. Here in the Netherlands I found a company that will repair/substitute a Galaxy S screen for 100 euro. (Compared to 250 euro for a HD2 screen) And I didn't search that hard. I bet that there are companies that do it for less.
If other solutions doesn't work for you, google the internet and look what the prices are for a new display in your neighbourhood. Maybe its much cheaper than you thought.
That's beyound any logic.
OLED/AMOLED screens are more expensive than LCD screens, 250$ for the HD2 screen is an overly blown-out price, you can find screens on ebay for less than half that price.
About sandpaper and whatnot- Yeah, high-grit sandpaper is a way to polish out scratches on glass.
I won't ever try it on the SGS, since i don't know where exactly is the digitizer layer.
You won't really need to replace the OLED screen, its the capacitive touch screen layer that needed to be change.
For my omnia i900, I have plenty of scratches on my screen and I replaced the touch layer at one of the local store for less than 40USD.

aren't the touchsensors build in the screen itself? If I remember it well is the biggest advantage of super Amoled that it doesn't have a touch screen layer.

Indeed that is the case. The SAMOLED screens have the touch technology integrated into the screen so you will have to replace the entire screen.
But someone found 100euros for a replacement in Holland... can you post a link to that? Seems like a good backup to me.
If its not insured, then get it insured and claim the repairs of the insurance. Accidental damage should cover it.

Use Coca Cola to remove small scratches. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and rub the scratches. Re-apply until the scratches are gone. The citric acid and carbonation in the soda help clean and remove small scratches in some items.

I think is the cheapest way to try to fix small scratches.. I think I will try on some old phones around the house LOL
I picked up the 3-pack of Att screen protectors from the att store the day I got my phone. They came with a cleaning cloth and applicator. Application was super easy and the feel of them is really smooth (much better than the squeaky feel of the zagg/invisishield ones). No water solution for these either. Its been a couple days now and absolutely no lifting and no bubbles. They're about an 1/8" too short to completely cover the entire front face of the phone, but they do cover the entire display no problem. If you line them all the way up to the bottom they will go to a little over the 'LG' logo up top. Oh and no affect on the touch screen sensitivity.
So if you don't feel like waiting for screen protectors to ship to you then I definitely recommend these at $10 for a set of 3.

It is actually very smooth. Easy to slide your finger around. Unlike most, it is just a little thicker than others. It is definitely not squeeky feeling. It has just enough of a matte finish to be strong, but doesn't sacrifice screen clarity. All in all, you will be very pleased with the purchase and chances are likely that you won't want to go with anything else.

How do you guys apply these? I have two dogs and even though we vacuum and clean a lot, I still seem to always get some hair or dust particle under the protector when applying. Lately Ive been turning on the shower and closing the door and the air thick with water keeps the particles down.

Haha. Yeah it took some patience. The att ones came with a no-lint cloth and then I used a can of air to get the tiny little particles left behind. The bathroom idea is brilliant!

The same here, I run a shower for a few minutes to steam up the bathroom, then write dirty words on...wait, scratch that lol Okay, I clean the screen with the microfiber cloth that comes with the protectors, then use a can of air to make sure it's 100% clean, then put them on.
inspire screen protectors
Inspire screen protectors fit exactly on the screen, except they are a little rounded at the edge but you wont even notice that. Side to side and up and down it is an exact fit. So if you can't get your hands on any thrill.protectors pick up some inspire protectors and they work just fine.

OK so first off I know I'm a cheap sod :angel:
My SG Nexus got wet and I'm waiting for the LG N4 to become in stock again...
So I've got myself a SG Note off eBay in perfect working order apart from one long crack that runs though only the glass (the OLED is fine).
I've looked into replacing the glass and tbh even thought I'm an engineer, nope.
My cunning plan is to fill the crack with superglue (let it dry) then slap on a zagg screen protector on it.
Any comments or ideas? Maybe lose the super glue? Maybe use something else other than superglue?
All ideas welcome - photos to follow when it gets here.
Just lose the super glue. The screen protector is enough. I would recommend the SGP screen protector maybe even the glass one.

Thanks, I have a long history with Zagg and all ready got one on order. Bit worried about the crack edge creating a refractive boundary hence the super glue... maybe I'll do a run with out the screen protector... maybe I'll stop over-thinking it

I'd skip the superglue since it's vapours will possibly stain the digitizer... In other words, it will make a mess!

Now that is something I had over looked. I had thought the glue would chemically react with anything. Have a digital cookie mate
Also if the glue sat proud when dry even a tiny bit the screen protector wont follow the contour & will have that nasty "lifting" look to it along the crack that you get at edges of screens some times.
I would fit a glass even if its involved, the part is about £15 & if you continue to use the phone cracked you risk pressure on your LCD & that's not cheap.

Thanks, but installing the glass involves separating the glass and OLED and there glued together. You have to heat the glass with a heat gun then pull them apart. I'm thinking that's going to crack the OLED.

That thread is a bit scary isn't it, its one of those jobs where having seen one done & exactly what's involved drastically increases the chances of success but most people haven't got that luxury.
But, if i wanted the phone repaired i would see risking the cheap way first as a worthwhile gamble.
But hope your screen "protector over crack" method works for you.

What about the car windsheild repair kits ? The ones that Auto-Glass (UK) use to fill cracks and chips on car windsheilds ? It leaves no residue either, Its basically like liquid glass until it sets.
worth looking it to surely ? would be cheaper than a whole Screen replacement.

Dam good link. I like the idea of one of those oil. Maybe baby oil would be to viscose (runny) so I'm thinking that a drop of two of that corn sirpe could do the trick... maybe even some wax? I got some clear natural beaswax... I feel some experimentation coming on....

again good shout. My only heastitaion is thats a one way street, no going back. But I think if the screen protector doesn't work then that can be dam good plan B!
I'm a little sick right now. On accident I slid my phone on its screen on a very smooth table and I now have scratches everywhere. All on the corners and a ton on the bottom by the touch buttons. At least the good thing is you can't see it unless in the light. But its pretty obvious. And of course I have slight OCD so this is bothering the **** out of me lol. They almost look like big scuffs all over.
Edit**: I just wanted to update you guys and say that now that I've gotten used to it its not so bad. Yes it still bothers me a lot but the good thing is you can't see them unless under a light or outside. So on usual use you can't see them.
Also to all the idiots who think I'm stupid or something. 1. Yes I do know gorilla glass scratches easier 2. Do you idiots really think I just slide my phones around on their screens on purpose or something?? Its called an accident 3. Stop jumping to conclusion saying how stupid this thread is, it was mainly for the people just getting their nexus 4s and telling them to be careful with the screen so they dont make my mistakes.

Most if not ALL surfaces have some form of dust/sand particles on it. Sand scratches glass no matter how "tough" it claims to be!

Gorilla glass 2 just means it's a thinner protective layer compared to the last generation, not twice (2) as thick nor protective.

Just a side note, apparently Sand is tough enough to grind down granite. This is because of small but tough grain in sand (sand has several components to it).

I'm pretty sure that most of the ppl here knows that Gorilla Glass, no matter what version, isn't scratch proof.
That isn't really a negative for the N4. You basically let your phone's screen nakedly rub against a surface (very smooth or not). Do it with any phone and you'll probably get the same results.

i learned that lesson with my scratched (gorilla glass) asus transformer.
on my n4 now i have a screen protector on the front and a slim hard shell on the back, with a slight lip that keeps the front screen above surfaces if placed on its front. I've also drilled a couple of mounting holes in the case for a wrist strap.

Flat glass against flat glass is a formula for disaster. With no air between the two surfaces, the smallest imperfections like dust will scratch the hell out of your screen.
I have this on my galaxy s3 and my galaxy nexus, when I sell it on eBay I'll be letting people know about it but I feel they won't understand just how small the scratches are.
For my nexus 4 I've already got a screen protector and a back skin because of this same problem.
It sucks.... I feel your pain brother.

Sorry to hear this. I too am pretty OCD about my devices. I love the look and feel of my N4 without cases and screen protectors, so this is of course a nightmare for most of us. I'm just glad to read that you're not one of the many users who thinks that just because someone puts the word "Gorilla" in front of another word must automatically mean its the most durable thing on the planet. I dare some of those people to go kick a set of gorilla balls and see how durable they are.

I go crazy over scratches too! I stuck with the factory protector until I bought the SGP protector. Feels just like glass and you can't even tell it's on the Nexus 4.
I honestly don't get why people are getting so pissed off. All this post was to show people my experience. Also a way to warn people about the screen. It was to tell everyone and warn them about my mistake and be careful about it.

Ignore the critics mate.
I did this early on with my s2 and was gutted. Seems the glass in whatever form has a long way to go before it can resist sand and general grit.
I hate cases, bumpers, screen protectors, skins blah blah but when I get a new device always buy loads.. Sad thing is novelty wears off and in 3 months it'll have none of the above on it and I'll have fallen into my bad ways of keeping it in a pocket with change or keys etc!
Moral of the story - what seems bad now you'll get used to and start to ignore! Doesn't make it a huge bummer tho.

Hi folks,
Just a word of advice.....if you want your oleophobic coating to last as long as possible, try to not clean your screen too often with alcohol-based wipes such as those lens wipes (blue/white packs) you can buy in Walmart.
I now have a tiny spot (5mm) on my screen that on initial glance looks like a scratch, but then you realize and wipe with your fingers, is just oil smudging when the rest of the screen is fine. If you rub and clean it out with your fingers, there is no scratch underneath.
It doesn't bother me, but it's something those of you with bare screens should keep in mind.

Good advice... Ask that is needed is a damp cloth like the ones you get for cleaning glasses. I don't use any type of cleaners y screen..
Maybe you can get warranty coverage on that..

Do you know about any long term effects that Rain X might have on the screen? I've seen comments indicating that it can provide some fingerprint protection, but a friend also said that it can damage the screen.

Rain x should be alright all it is is wax for glass. A straight carnauba wax should do wonders though, with no abrasive cleaner polishes in it. I've actually seen a video, can't remember where of someone applying wax to a screen. If you do use wax make sure its just wax, not an all in one which has polishing abrasives in it.

Rain X isn't a wax, it is a polymer that binds with the windscreen, the polymer hates water and loves glass. The polymer will also repel oils.
The problem with Rain X and things like it is the polymer is carried in alcohol. The alcohols job is mainly to clean the glass of oil and dirt allowing the polymer to bind better. The action of apply it to a phone is it can damage the existing coating, or what remains of it. Of course if this coating has already worn away that doesn't matter and it should give a similar feel when applied.
If only a small part of the screen is damaged the best way to apply Rain X is to wet the corner of a cloth with it and let the alcohol evaporate until the cloth is dry. The polymer will still be on the cloth, and provided the screen is clean (mild soap then polished clean with a microfibre cloth), the polymer should still transfer from the cloth to the glass.
Carnauba wax will not bind chemically to the glass screen and will just rub off and smudge.

This looks interesting. I'll go this route a year later once all of it has come off.
I occasionally use a chlorox wipe, but I keep a xoskin on it. I know windex is bad for it too. The skin came with a spray bottle of water and soap, I just refill it when it's empty with a drop of dish soap and water, then use paper towels to wipe it clean. Stuff like windex or alcohol can be acidic and leave behind stuff.
Best thing to use is an anti static cloth.. They're cheap and last forever.
Been using that Zeiss wipe. Absolutely no problem.

That's odd. When I first got it, the spot was definitely not there. I don't do any type of jobs that expose my hands to strong chemicals. It's something I noticed in the past week alone. It is very evident when you "softly" wipe over the screen with the Zeiss as the part where the coating has worn off stays wet and smudges whereas the rest is sort of streak free.
I can't think of anything else that i did that would have caused this to be honest.
Like others have said, it may have been a defect such that too little coating was applied to begin with?

What's wrong with a cloth and some good-old-fashioned water? I mean its not like it could get any cleaner than that.

I am a bit of a germaphobe and use alcohol wipes on my phone every time I leave the house and come back with it. So I clean it 2-5 times a day. I have been doing this for years and never had a problem. Maybe I removed the coating a long time ago and don't know the difference? lol

Just wiped with Zeiss again. Didnt notice anything like you said.
First of all, alcohol is water based. The coating is definitely not water based, so there is no way that alcohol affects the coating.
If its just a small patch, it is highly possible that your finger touched some other solvent and then touched the screen. The patch should be bigger if its caused by the wipes, right?

I haven't even removed the protective plastic on the front and back and use Glass Plus to remove fingerprints and food accumulation.
