Again, just like my LG Arena, the camera disappoints. Especially at night.
When I like to shoot a picture when there isn't any daylight, the photo's turn blurry and unstable. This especially seems to be since i installed the custom rom from Paul (i guess, not sure).
Try this:
Outside at daylight. Launch the camera app. Now move you phone around and look at your screen. Is it laggy? Probably not.
Now do the same in your room at night with just some lights on, and it laggs a lot.
Am I the only one?
Don't expect night photos from a phone. If you want that you need a proper camera - ideally an SLR with a decent lens. And a tripod.

I‘ve had my phone for over a week and a half and aleady taken a few pics with it, including at night and though night shots weren‘t fantastic they were deffinitely not bad, in fact i was pretty impressed with the result, for a phone. I would upload a picture but not sure how, am new on here...

I mean, a blackberry bold 9700 can make better night pictures. I don't care about the amount of pixels. I care amount the blurryness of the photo when somebody moves just a bit.

the photo`s are overexposed, the one sets the exposure on what it is focusing on, so i would have though it focused on the dark water and raised the exposure, that`s is why the white birds are overexposed, if you focused on a white bird, the one would reduce the exposure, and give more detail on the birds.
You know you can touch the screen to focus, but there is a setting in the menu to take a photo automatically when you click on an area of the screen.
I wish there was an total area exposure mode instead of the focus spot one.

I'm not an expert but, I think you just need to focus manually (press on the screen to focus as Tinderbox said) to avoid an overexposed picture...

It's called metering. When you tap on the water to focus (dark), the camera turns the light up so that the water is clearly visible and perfectly exposed. But since you're making dark brighter, the brights will naturally be even brighter. You want the feathers to show detail, you tap on them and it adjusts the light so that they are darker and you can see detail at the expense of even darker water.
Your best bet in these kind of high contrast situations is to use HDR mode. It takes 1 under-exposed image (dark) and 1 slightly over-exposed image (bright) and merges the 2 together. Dark areas will be brighter and bright areas will be darker, giving the image a little fake look, but evenly exposed throughout.
On dSLRs, HDR actually takes THREE images to combine (sometimes even 5). This gives the processor more choices to pick and choose the best parts of each image to merge to a final picture.

I don't remember now, what I have been focusing on - was it the swans/seagulls or dark water, pavement. I think I tried both, focusing on different areas of the screen and the result was the same.
Same goes for videos, birds are overblown and shine like some white lanterns...
My firmware is 1.29.401.16

Just some samples to explain my previous post. First pic is me focusing on the wall, which is dark. The wall is now not but my lightsource is completely blown out.
As one pic shows me focusing on the light. Since it's bright, the camera has to darken the whole scene so I can actually see the object I focused on, turning the rest of the scene dark.

It's just the camera. I tested it against an s4 and an Xperia z. Indoor shots were way better on the one than either of them but both beat out the one hands down when it came to outdoor shots. I have tried everything and can't get a really good outdoor shot. I would like to see the result of someone porting the Xperia z camera app to our device but I don't know if it is possible.

It looks just like what ArmedandDangerous explained. In the first picture you seem to be focused on the water and the second it looks like you're focused on the birds.

Hey guys,
The problem is, that some extra white/bright objects are too small for the camera to catch focus for and adjust the settings.
I played with settings a bit over the weekend and the camera focuses OK on brighter objects, as long as they are big enough...
A bit of a shame, nor my Lumia 920, nor even galaxy S2 has problems like this... I guess, I can live with it, though
EDIT: So, I did some more testing and the fault seems to be with the focus of the camera. Initially when you open the camera app it auto focuses and this then leaves me with an out of focus picture and touch to focus never actually changes anything. I tested Camera FV-5 and this app has an option to disable auto focus, allowing me to take a picture without the camera ever focusing, this takes a perfect picture but if I touch to focus it goes out of focus just like the stock camera.
Obviously it is faulty as it no longer makes that click when you open the camera app, well it does, but only like once every dozen times the camera is opened (still out of focus btw) ... Macro shots work perfectly, focus is spot on but anything at a distance of about more than a foot or two away just seems to blur.

Thanks for the reply .. So it's not faulty then? Just a big negative of having so few pixels, no matter how much light they let in?
IMO it is hardware problem.

I would honestly do more tests indoor and outdoor to see if its a hardware problem.
I was having focus problems too, and I thought the OIS should be working better.
Then i started holding the phone a bit closer to me when taking a photo making sure both hands are holding the phone, kind of like holding a regular camera.
Also take advantage of exposure/focus lock; then snap the photo. Once I starting holding the phone more like a camera my focus issues went away. This was most noticeable in lower light conditions when the shutter speed isn't as fast as outside. I think something is going on and the OIS is trying to compensate for movement.
I also drink tons of coffee so my hands get a bit shaky!

Lol, I don't have the caffeine issue but with regards to tests, I have done lotssssssssssss lol. Pictures I've taken close up, especially ones where I want to focus on something in particular, look good, but anything at distance or ones where I don't want to focus on a certain area, just a scenic shot, they all look blurry like the examples.

Same here. Macro are great, standard are blurry and lack of details.

I'm 99% sure it's software related and that's based purely on a test I just did with a 3rd party camera app and the stock one. I took the same shot with both camera apps and did nothing but let it auto focus and take the shot, one looks fine, the other looks blurry ... Doesn't take much guess work to figure out by these results, that it must be software based because both pictures use the same hardware
Check these 3 pictures. One is a nice close up with the stock camera on Sense, which looks very good. The other two pics are the two mentioned earlier, as you can see, stock Sense camera is blurry and out of focus but the 3rd party one is much, much better ...
Both look like crap, sorry. No details, no sharpness.

They're not going to be full of detail, it's dull, I didn't adjust any settings, I didn't manually focus or adjust exposure and I took them from my room ... Through the window.
I didn't take them to capture detail, purely to show how two different camera apps using the same hardware, give completely different results when it comes to backgrounds not being blurred or out of focus. If it had been a nice day and scenic then the pictures would obviously have looked better but then my issue is with focus and blur on the Sense camera, not how little detail the HTC is capable of capturing when the conditions are anything but perfect.
My camera just seems to have issues staying focused, pictures aren't bad by any means though.

I am on my 3rd HTC One M7 since April when I initially ordered. First two had gaps and poor build quality. I finally get a good build but have the same camera issue. Its all out of focus and bit blurred. I have reset to factory etc but no fix so its hardware problem.It's now on its way back for repair with P4U in the UK. Hopefully 4th time I will get a workable well built phone.
I seem to be experiencing the same issue. It didn't start happening until Sep. 14th. Did your issues start suddenly, or did your One always have this problem?
Here are some example shots:
Proper auto focus at a short distance
Improper auto focus from maybe 10 feet away
Improper auto focus from far away
And my phone issues, you can interview about the android4.2.2, perfect results, the focus is normal, close-range vision is normal, personal guess is driver problem, but no ability to solve, hope can help transplant drive.

I keep seeing reviews and comments talking about the great quality of this camera (above the average, at the level of high end...), however, my phone does not cope very well with some situations and I do not know why. Is it defective? is it low light? I am going to post some images but right now I am going to describe the behaviour.
For some reason the main camera struggles a lot when taking pictures of thing in movement. I does not expect a shutter speed of 1/1000 but I cannot make my son to be more steady either. The image seems focused except the moving part which is always blurry. This happens in low light but also in conditions which I consider good light (exteriors, rooms with 25W LED + side lamp...)
The front camera IMHO does not deserve any compliment, it struggles a lot to focus, more than half the pictures are blurry and/or out of focus, most of them have a lot of noise like in low light. It is a bit better after turning on the flash in screen but, again, is this normal?
I will thank any comment on this.

Pictures 2 and 3 has very good light in my opinion and the camera struggles.
4 and 5 are made with the front camera and both are below the standard IMHO.

I honestly think that the camera on the Moto G could have been much better. I like the camera APP interface itself, but the photo quality is mediocre. Aside from picture quality, anyone notices their camera lens getting scratched up? Mine is.

The photo quality is not as described. Image stabilization seems just not there are or not working properly.
Photo quality is good only if still photos are taken during day time with more light in. That is all.
But for the cost of around $200 its a good phone but not a camera phone.

As far as I'm concerned the camera quality is really above average. Your problem seems to find his cause elsewhere.
To keep it simple, your photos may be blurry because of the lack of light indoor. Smartphone are known to have small objective (while real camera have big one) that can't gather a lot of light by themselve. It means that you'll have to sacrifice quality if the environnement is not well lit. In this case, you're phone try to make up for the lack of light by gathering more light before taking the photo which cause a more blurry photo. You can also manually set it to take it faster but you'll have to use a higher iso (which mean more noise).
If you want a good photo you need :
- light (even for a galaxy S7)
- A good objective (also the bigger the better but we're on a smartphone so...)
- A clean objective (I can't stress how this matter ! Even more if we consider that it's really use to put à finger on the objective of the moto g4)
Here you go, hope it helped, if you want to test your camera to see if it has some problem you should do it outdoor with the sun at zenith and some cloud to avoid bad shadows and blinding effects.

Thanks for your answer kayet95. The main point is that the camera is not reliable enough and you end up taking 5 pictures each time just to be sure one will be fine. Of course with the lighting you suggest the camera does well, it would be a complete rubbish if not, but take a look at my attachment sunlight. The window was fully open, there where sun coming into the scene and the camera struggled once.
I agree the camera is capable of taking great pictures, but it is nor reliable.
My experience is that the camera in G4Plus is above average for a phone. I think that who expects more is delusional, you need to buy a real camera to take good pictures - in low light or with any level of zoom.

This camera is very good for a phone camera, especially one of this price. To expect high quality pix from it in every lighting or motion situation is simply ludicrous.

The camera is capable of good pictures, however mine seem inconsistent. Sometimes take the same shot a couple times to get good one, even in good lighting. I upgraded from last year's moto g, and consistently got excellent pictures with it.
Overall I feel the camera on the g4 plus isn't quite as good as last year's moto g. I was really expecting better.

As a fairly new father I am taking a lot of pictures of my daughter.
In still shots the phone is fine but when she is moving, which can be quite a lot I am getting lot's of pictures of blurry arms and feet.
My wife says my new phone is rubbish and I should return it because of this, compared to her iphone 6 which takes perfect pictures of moving arms and legs with zero blur.
To be honest I never had a phone cause so much blur with the standard automatic mode...before this my P9 took pictures in the same circumstances with zero blurry limbs and my Lumia 950xl was perfect taking pictures of my dog.
Does anyone else have blur with moving people or animals?
Any tips on how I can avoid this problem?
I have turned off HDR and flash to try and reduce the time needed for each photo but I need to take photo's fast some times and don't have time to mess around in the settings.
Its not really a fault of the camera or the phone, it is attempting to get a correctly exposed shot with the light available and if there is a lot of movement in poor light the bits that are moving get blurred due to a slow shutter speed.
You might want to try using the colour sensor only although it is well known the camera app is a bit crap, you could try another like Camera Zoom FX etc.

Trouble is comparing it with an iPhone isn't going to help either, i think the camera in the Nokia 8 gets a bad rap but clearly it cant compete with an iPhone which are known for having great cameras.

iphone 6 is 3 years old so I would expect it to produce better photo's than that (ignoring the blur factor), when I had my Lumia 950XL my wife was amazed at how good the photo's looked compared to her iphone.
If I can just find a better camera app than the default one it can be ok.
But did you try Google Camera on the dev section ? the BSG, Cstark or Arnova one ? There is zero shutter lag like Pixels, and it's very good.
You can't compete with Lumia 950XL though. Still a king after these years and incredible in low light

Age has nothing to do with it though, a good camera is a good camera, my (now little used) Canon 20D is 14 years old and still takes a cracking photo.
The f2 aperture is the weak point on the Nokia 8, even my Moto G5 Plus has an f1.7 aperture and sadly Nokia cant do anything to change that other than force the camera to shoot with a higher ISO and therefore a faster shutter in low light.
Use the google camera app. Turn on "HDR+ Enhanced" and you should not get blurry photo in decent/good light. A bit of delay per shot but you'll get great image.
The phone still gives up in low light, however.
Bit late here, but I have the same issue. I think the camera is ****. Even my old phones (and cheaper phones are significantly better at capturing moving targets). Really disappointed. Got new kitten, 1 in 10 photos is keepable. Even in bright light. It just takes way too long to focus, often missing the moment altogether.

Slow/blurry focus is already a common problem on Nokia 8. You can install the Google Camera to resolve the problem. It also comes with some new features (such as motion picture) which is currently and exclusively on Google Pixel 2 camera as well.??
