[Q] "Internet Sharing" (tethering) for lumia 822 - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

sorry for my english (using Google Translate)
lyumia 822 unlocked: GSM use the SIM card - not working "Internet Sharing" (tethering). Why? What can be done?

What's the error message? "Not working" tells us nothing much.
Also, isn't the 822 primarily a CDMA phone? I mean, yeah it has a SIM slot and apparently it supports GSM as well, but it seems odd to buy a phone that's basically a CDMA variant instead of one that's intended primarily for GSM networks.
One quick check: is your data connection working in general at all? You might have to tell it to use the GSM network instead of looking for a CDMA one.

Verizon 822 is a LTE phone, all Verizon LTE phones NEED a SIM card to run (Verizon is changing to a full SIM card model with LTE...it's about time) and it is factory unlocked (All Verizon LTE phones are SIM unlocked).
To the OP, the Verizon 822 has internet sharing disabled from the carrier, the only way to enable it is to contact Verizon on their network to use it. I know of no hacks of any type to enable it (if someone knows, let me know, I am interested too)

It seems to work fine out of box on the 928, but I have no idea if that is actually hard coded. I remember that for WP7, everyone had to download
JerryJiang's Tethering unlocker for Verizon Trophy.

I have a 928, it tells me I need to ennable it from my carrier if I want to use it. Are you using Verizon and do you have "tethering" enabled on your account or did you find a work-around for it ?
I would love to use it without paying another $20-30 a month when I only need it every once and a while.

No, unfortunately. We have their share everything plan. 20GBs of data including our HomeFusion thingy. I tried to look inside ##PST#, along with the 000000 password, but none of the fields can be changed on the 928. Any luck on yours?

By FCC law they are supposed to either use the 000000 code or 123456. Its because of one of the bands they use require this as well as all devices being carrier unlocked. It seems though they moved the settings into the sim, so the only way it might be able to be modified is through the Qualcomm boot loader which hasn't been pursued yet.

What Tether-X are you referring to?

Just sharing my experience, running 8.1 on nokia lumia 822 in Guatemala with TIGO operator and was having the same issue reported on first post, internet sharing option just hanged and it did not work, today I just install access point app, made sure my TIGO APN settings were detected just by opening and seeing it, went to internet sharing and it finally worked. easier that what expected it was going to be.

[Q] Can Lumia 928 be used overseas ?

Hello all- I have not found a definitive answer so will post my question here as well. I have a chance to get a Lumia 928 (Verizon) but would like to know if I can use it in New Zealand with my Vodafone SIM. I am not sure if there will be limitations such as maps, etc.. not working.
Cheers for any help, LL13- :victory:
LTE will not work in any country besides the US. Aside from that the 928 shouldn't have any issues with taking a different SIM, as all 928s are SIM unlocked when they shipped from the factory. Before you leave though, I highly recommend you download access point via sysapp pusher in the marketplace/store. Sysapp will check for any and all OEM apps that need updating.

The one warning I would give you with the 928 is that the APN settings are a little messed up, and you may need to play around with it a bit to get them to work. My experience (using the 928 on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US) is that you need to manually set the APN settings, even when Nokia Access Point says that the SIM settings are activated. You can usually get data fine, but MMS's don't work properly if you don't manually set the APN
If possible, avoid doing it with Nokia Access Point, because if you do you will lose the ability to use LTE when you get back on Verizon until you do a hard reset (you can't recover the appropriate Verizon LTE APN settings - it will only connect to CDMA 3g). Now that GDR2 is out, you can seemingly manually set the APN's in the Cellular menu of settings, so try using that first and if it fails, copy the correct APN settings into a new Access Point APN, then manually activate it. This has fixed my issue every time, but again, necessitated a hard reset / wipe of the phone to use on Verizon's LTE network.
Cheers for that information AR...
I can enter those settings manually, I've got them memorised :silly:
Cheers again, LL13- :good:
Wow very confusing topic, I mean the process of finding out whether data/mms will work outside of Verizon US, it seems it can not. Too bad as it's a beauty of a phone.

Its not that quite confusing.
LTE is only good for the country it was released in. The international LTE bandplan is different for every country, none of them match up. For using a CDMA carrier, switching to them will require a SIM (there isn't any way to flash the settings onto the phone yet for those providers who don't yet have LTE without it being official from Nokia) so its kinda a dead end.
If your going to a GSM provider, just insert your SIM and manually add the settings for data and mms. You can use Access Point if you don't intend on using Verizon's LTE.

That makes me a bit more comfortable, cheers for that information thals1992 !!
It seems that the main issue would be with the LTE which would not be a problem since I am not even sure what it is !! I believe it may have to do with 4G or fast download speeds but there is no 4G in my town anyway.
I saw one post on another forum saying that some 928's had no way to add/edit APN settings, etc...
Each post and person seems to have a different experience, but if I can simply get a 3G data connection and normal use I would be happy.
I may just go for it then.

When you travel abroad and use the phone on a GSM carrier you will get data up to HSPA+, unless the carrier happens to share Verizons LTE band. The issue with Verizon LTE after you have used another APN is that Access Point won't deactivate all the APN settings, and since Verizon doesn't have dedicated APN data settings, it doesn't override properly and connect toVZW LTE properly without a hard reset.
The 928 has a CDMA radio as well as a fully unlocked GSM radio

a hard reset is required as the access point app changes the LTE settings and can't change it back completely.

Can an AT&T WP8 be forced to allow tethering?

I currently have a windows phone 7 that I unlocked to allow WiFi tethering. I'm looking into vetting a lumia phone, however I don't want to change my plan.
Can windows phone 8 be forced to allow WiFi tethering as my current windows phone 7 is?

I'm not sure if AT&T devices allow for tethering as is. If I'm correct, then this needs to be enabled by the carrier. I had this issue with my T-Mo 8X. It was on T-Mo, and tethering worked, then I went to Family Mobile, and it wouldn't. I'm currently on MetroPCS, and they allow tethering so its enabled once again. Same thing with Visual Voicemail.

Sometimes its carrier dependent, sometimes its device dependent. If you switch to a subsidiary of your original carrier it will sometimes work. On WP7 there were tutorials to do this, but since the 4G/LTE switch things have been changed on the backend where it checks for "entitlement". Android hackers that have experience with how the process occurs won't help us....
AT&T allows tethering if you pay for a large data plan. My sister has a Windows Phone 8 and if she tries to enable tethering on it is says to call AT&T to activate it.
When I looked at it, it was more specific saying that you need a data plan that allows it.
In a pinch, you could use Tether-X I suppose. I've used it in those situations, and it worked fine for my needs.
I got the ATT 920 around September last year.
Day 2, I flashed it with the unbranded French ROM to get Amber and GDR2. There is a thread over at WPCentral regarding that flash procedure and there was a weird trick that enabled tethering. I dont remember the exact procedure, but I think it involved downloading the Spanish keyboard (as random as it sounds it worked.)
So I enjoyed the ability to tether, but my 300 MB plan didn't make it practical. With the Black update, my tethering was back to normal (meaning not working) but I heard of people getting it back by hard resetting their phone and doing something. I'm not sure off the top of my head.

As you have experience with this app, can you let me know if a tablet or iPod can be tethered to your phone?
It's rare, but on occasion I allow some other things to connect to my phone such as a deactivated android phone. I really only need to allow 2 devices at once as a minimal.
To answer your actual question (which everybody seems to be missing): The only phones we currently have that has the required unlock level to change stuff like that are the Huawei W1 (maybe others than the W1?) which is very low-end, and the Samsung ATIV line (ATIV S, etc.) which are pretty good although not on the same level as the new top-end Nokia devices (they were good at launch, but are now about a year old). Still far more powerful than any WP7 device, though.
Unfortunately, I don't know that anybody has found the required policies to set, yet. It's possible, but highly unlikely, that the same provxml used on WP7 could be used with WP8; provxml is very limited on WP8 so even though we can theoretically use it on interop-unlocked phones, it's not very useful. However, hotspot control may be one of the things it's useful for. Otherwise, there are capabilities (normally locked, but interop-unlock usually also means capability-unlock) related to setting those features as well. An app could be written that uses such capabilities. We would simply need to figure out how to do it...
I'm not thinking that would work for you. The Tether-X app requires your WP to be connected to a WiFi network, and the internet sharing is limited to the browser, with proxy set up in LAN settings. As its completely browser dependant with the need to have an existing network to connect to, I'm not sure how it would work for you. There's almost always workarounds to everything though. That app does have a free trial with limits only on the number of connections per month. I suggest try it, play around.
I'll have to try it out on my sisters phone. Otherwise I'll have to really compare what family plan we have now to what the new one that allows tethering.
Forgot to mention I plan on registering the phone with a developer account to get the latest updates from MS.
AT&T is so slow at approving things.
i've never had an issue activating the wifi hotspot on my lumia 920. i pay AT&T nothing extra for this feature; just go to settings, internet sharing, and slide to enable.
I also have this feature on my lumia 2520, and again, pay nothing extra.

What plan do you have? I am on the old family plan.
Did you get your phone from AT&T?
I have Internet Sharing available on my AT&T HTC Titan WP7, Lumia 520 GoPhone version, and AT&T Lumia 920.

Well, I'm on a AT&T Family Plan. I checked my sisters phone, a Nokia Lumia 920, and I got an error telling me to order a plan that supports Internet Sharing.
I have a gut feeling that tethering is controlled, because Microsoft deliberately uses different APN for the phone's own internet connection and for the internet connection sharing. So when you try to enable the feature, phone tries communicating via the internet sharing APN, and in case it is now allowed by the carrier, fails and reports back the error.
I have a TMo Lumia 925 and my main carrier is Telus (in Canada). The unlocked phone used to work fine with internet sharing in Canada, and was giving me wrong plan error when I was trying to use it with my $2/day TMo prepaid plan while in US. After Black update TMo broke the internet sharing with Telus as well, so I flashed one of the Latin America ROMs to be able to get both Black update and Internet Sharing working with Telus. However, even with the Latin America ROM it still fails to turn it on with TMo.
I think the Access Point app contains settings for all carriers, and it doesn't let you modify the internet sharing APN. I bet that if we were able to somehow trick the phone to set the same APN for it's own connection and for internet sharing, carriers would have much harder time blocking it on plans that are not supposed to have it.
Well I'll have to really compare my options in terms of AT&T's plans.
In my opinion, its real stupid that carriers would block this stuff.

No, it is not. The $30 3GB DataPro smartphone dataplan does not allow tethering. The carriers typically sell more expensive dataplan which allows tethering. All AT&T brand phones have always prohibited any form of tethering, regardless of smart or dumb phones.
To get around such restriction, you need to use factory unlocked phones. Carrier unlocked phones may or may not work depend on carrier's policy on tethering.
Or if you are adventurous enough, then you can choose a carrier phone that can be de-branded. Good luck finding the generic firmware and tools for flashing the phones. I was able to get Internet Sharing working on Nokia Lumia 520 GoPhone after debranding with generic firmware.
Any idea where to get either the firmware or a factory unlocked phone other then eBay? I would prefer to just get the firmware, but from what I have heard Nokia has decided to block access to the firmware images and possibly the tools as well.
Reason being the upfront cost of the phone.
My thoughts on it being stupid is using AT&T's reasoning for the limitation. There statement is to help prevent customers from going over there data plan. They could just as easily have a warning every time you enable the feature.

Well, that's what every carrier wants their customers to believe. They are doing this to protect the customers, including forcing dataplan on every smartphones they know of without the option to pay-per-use or just a simple data blocked. The customers are too *dumb* to disable mobile data on their *smart* phones.

LG G4 Sprint SIM / Network unlock

Has anyone been able to SIM / network unlock Sprint variant of LG G4? For international use? for domestic carriers?
The phone appears to be locked. I tried putting GSM micro SIM and putting phone in to GSM mode. Got an icon about invalid SIM in notification tray. But no prompt to unlock. Also no menu in settings to unlock via network like my note 3 had. Even worse, no menu to select GSM Network operator in the settings.

I know , that is the theory, I am curious if anybody actually tried it. I am concerned about the fact that I don't see a menu to select GSM network, which was there in Note 3
it almost looks like the phone can roam on GSM network using Sprint SIM, but all the menus that would allow presence of different SIM where removed.

Friend called Sprint and they unlocked his phone OTA. Now when non-sprint SIM is inserted it no longer complains about invalid SIM, however it will not connect to any networks in USA and still no way to see a list of networks or do a manual selection of network. That menu is still missing. I suspect the phone will now work outside of the USA in automatic network selection mode only, which may not be a good thing some times.

You must be new here. Domestic gsm has been unlocked on most modern Sprint smart phones. Just in the years I've been with Sprint ive unlocked the Moto Q, G2, S4, and now the G3 for ATT and straight talk. Ive read of several others having the same ability. The s5 can also be unlocked but only one guy knows how but you gotta pay him for it. Kinda ****ty but it actually works.

Any chances of unlocking when outside US? I got my phone from Amazon and got it shipped in my country. Tried calling them but they said they only unlock activated phones. Also tried various sites that offer unlock codes but since G4 is not asking for unlock code, they can't do anything.
Do I have any other options?

I can't confirm, since I don't have access to any AT&T SIM at the moment. If you're already rooted, you can try it out, but make sure to back up the files.
Another update: After updating the APN, my data finally worked. LTE is impossible at the moment since the this doesn't support the LTE bands here in my country
Warning: Don't try to disable auto activation for now. I got the Security Error and still on the process of fixing it.

tap phone and open the dialing pad an hit *#*#4636#*#* then tap Phone information and scroll down to "set preferred network type" in there you'll find a way to switch to LTE/GSM but I don't know if it will work unless the phone is S-off or already carrier unlocked.

So does mine and it's also CDMA and from what I know the CDMA phones cannot be unlocked from the carrier to use another network and the only one cable of doing that is the GSM phone not the CDMA ones. So mines still locked to Sprint and I'm s-off too.

If you want to get s-off, and your phone is 32 bit and NOT 64 bit, you can go to the website ---> The Root Ninja and download the app called Sunshine that @jcase made specifically for obtaining s-off. After you get your one time, one use license, if you need help with it you can either talk to @jcase or if he's not available you can come back here and I'll help you out. If your phone is 64 bit don't bother even trying to s-off it's not going to work with Sunshine and don't bother @jcase about it working for 64 bit because it doesn't and won't.

If you're not in USA then it doesn't matter because you're phone is most likely 64 bit since only 32 bit is sold in USA. If you're sim unlocked already there might be a way to get GSM to work so try this... Open the phones dialing pad and enter code *#*#4636#*#* and then tap Phone Information and then scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select LTE/GSM auto (PRL) and then see if you can get it to work. But you'll most likely need your service providers APN (Access Point Name) and you'll have to set it up in the phones Settings in Network.

no, my phone is a virgin mobile (from sprint) i have tried the 4636 menu but with no luck, the phone only allows me to change to some of the options like LTE only, LTE CDMA, LTE WCDMA, CDMA EVDO GSM WCDMA LTE AUTO, GSM WCDMA LTE AUTO, GSM WCDMA, CDMA + LTE EVDO AUTO, and others and with any it doesnt wrabs signal. any of the gsm ones should do the trick but none does it.
and when i try to auto connect to network show that my simcard dont allow connection to this network and i tried 2 working sims with the same result

I've tried to tell a lot of people that there's no way to get a CDMA Virgin Mobile brand phone to work on GSM Networks, it's impossible and no one bothers to listen to me so I don't tell people to not try anymore I just try to support what they want to do. It's never going to work but you can keep trying and if you find a way to get it to work post the solution here.

ok, but how are you so sure?
the htc one m7 and the m8 from sprint can be used on gsm being cdma phones in first place, in fact i do own a htc one m8 from sprint that i succesfully unlocked and use it right now with a gsm network in my country.
also i do remember that other cdma/gsm phones like the htc pro 2 was capable to work on either network.
maybe something is still missing and we havent done all to achieve succes. ill keep try before selling the desire like this

Because Virgin Mobile purposely made it that way so that it can never be used with any other carrier but them... I know this because I have gone out of the Country a lot because I'm in the Military and when I asked VM to unlock the SIM card they said they cannot unlock it because even if they did it's never going to work with another SIM/Carrier and believe me I tried and tried while I was in Afghanistan and I eventually just gave up and bought a small stupid flip phone to use while over there instead. But like I said, you can keep trying. I'm not trying to tell you not to try because you might find a way when I couldn't.

hello,
we had a discussion about it in other thread. people tried it, soffed 510, and tried all the way. i have sprint, virgin, boost 510 sim unlocked. i am using it with other cdma carrier with evdo working. i even tried it setting to gsm, but it doesnt works. i tried adding gsm bands via dfs tool too, but still it doesnt work. igsm bands are locked in radio or radio doesnt have support for it. We need a gsm 510 radio to work on it. if someone have a knowledge uptill radio level, who can patch radio of 510 then it may work..
but @MrMike2182 is right too.. lol , but we never know... like sprint htc m9... people thought its impossible to unlock, but now you can sim unlock it ..

im begginning to suspect that the lower level devices the issue is that the hardware is acutially different. flagship phones are not made with many different variants,so the simlock and profile are controlled via software and thus able to be "unlocked"
ive gotten a sprint one max to work on gsm,but tried alot of different things trying to get a virgin mobile desire 816 to work with zero success. the fact that folks to use these phones on other cdma networks does indicate they are no longer sim locked.
cheaper phones like this the best advice is to sell it off and just get a gsm version. there are plenty out there that will work without the hassle.

Trust me I've done everything under the sun to get this sucker to work on GSM and it won't do it... When Virgin Mobile refused to SIM unlock it saying it cannot be unlocked I got pissed and S-off'ed the phone and it works with other CDMA carriers but it just won't work with GSM but I was thinking it may have something to do with the radio but I don't want to mess around with that just yet because that'll brick it for sure if I get it wrong..

true. lower end devices, dont have capabilities. i used htc one max sprint on gsm , it works on cdma with nv and also on simcard. m7 also works that way, but to make it work with other cdma sim, we have patched radio for m7, it was realased on some chinese forum, later posted by someone on xda. Htc one m8 sprint, verizon works best. works on gsm, works on cdma sim, works on nv too with other providers, you dont even need to touch radio.. i even relocked and got latest ota. still it works best with all. truly world phone..

SM920P Can't establish wireless data connection troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I bought a SM920P Note 5 (Sprint) in , I could use 3G at VietNam without any problems but when I arrive at Japan, I can't use 3G anymore, only ordinary phone calls and SMS. The phone keeps alerting this error : lte:esm - 29 emm - x unable to stablish a wireless data connection.
I have entered the APN setting of the carrier. I tried to put the SIM into another phone and it works without problems.
In the settings>more>about device>status : the networks says HSPDA. So I changed the Bearer in the APN setting to HSPDA but still no luck !
My OS now is Nougat, and I don't think the phone is rooted because I'm receiving auto updates.
Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem?
Forgive me if there were missing information, just ask me and I will provide, sorry I'm not very "technical" !

Thanks for the reply.
I only have 4 mode in my network mode :
- CDMA
- LTE/CDMA
- GSM/UTMS
- Automatic
If I chose CDMA or LTE/CDMA there won't be any signal at all, the working options are GSM/UTMS and Automatic which I assume is the GSM/UTMS itselft.
Any ideas ??

Did you get Sprint to unlock your phone for a different carrier before you left? Those APN settings have to be set exactly right and you must save it. Once you change your network mode it may take a bit to get signal.

No, unfortunately I bought the phone in Vietnam, are there other ways to solve this? Like rooting the device and make some system changes?

I do not know if rooting it would do you any good. I am not sure if changing the firmware would allow you to change carriers. I am not even positive that's the problem. Did it ask for some kind of code after you inserted the new SIM?
Is it a data only SIM? I think it needs to be a data only SIM being a CDMA phone.

Hi RedNeck, sorry for the late reply.
No it did not ask for any code when I inserting the SIM, the SIM is capable of Call and SMS.

No problem. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure your Sprint phone is CDMA and I am pretty sure that the only thing your phone uses your SIM card for is LTE data. So if I am correct you need a SIM that is data only. The other phone it works in, is it CDMA or GSM?

Actually I don't know anything about the CDMA or GSM things. Here is the result I got from googling the spec of the other phone :
Technology
GSM / HSPA / LTE
So, assuming you're right, can I just "disable" the calling and SMS function of the SIM, make it to become a data only SIM? I already got into a 6 month contract here, so I can't change the contract type in about 5 months !!!

You are welcome. I do not think you can do that to a SIM. The other phone sounds like a GSM phone and if the SIM works in that phone it will not work in a CDMA phone. I would go to your new carrier and ask if there is anything they can help you with. That's assuming that you are not carrier locked to Sprint. Then you have the fact that the CDMA SIM will not work in your other phone.

Thanks, but are you sure this is a CDMA Phone? Because when I change the Network Mode to CDMA or LTE/CDMA, the phone will lose all the signal?

Yes I am sure. I have seen CDMA carrier phones that were refurbished by third parties that "claim" they are unlocked for GSM carriers. I am not sure how much I trust that. You may hit up Sprint support and see if there is something they can do for you. If you bought it on contract from them they may not do anything for you.
Good luck.
