Bluetooth GPS working - Nook HD, HD+ Accessories

Using verygreen's emmc install 6/24 I paired with my SirfIII Bluetooth.
Did not work initially until I installed this;
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImRlLm1vYmlsZWouYnRncHMiXQ..
A blue tooth provider. There's others (one on source forge) but this works for me.
Hope this helps.

As of the last update of this app, it works on stock too. I had it working with my BT-359, but I lost that on my vacation ( just this weekend )! I just purchased a replacement off of eBay. Sigh....

I have a GPSlim236. On stock. It pairs but it seems there's absolutely no BT activity. I have checked Use Mock Locations. Nothing seems to happen. Any hints?

Just to be clear I need to know the exact steps you are taking when trying to enable GPS. They should be:
1) Have Bluetooth GPS Provider loaded.
2) Have Allow Mock Locations and GPS Satellites enabled.
3) Pair the bluetooth GPS.
4) In Bluetooth GPS Provider choose your GPS, and in its settings make sure the GPS type is set to SiRF III ( or whatever your actual GPS type is ).
5) Start Bluetooth GPS Provider ( I also enable Bluetooth switching in the app, but that is my preference since I am currently using no other bluetooth devices ).
6) Use GPS applications.
Hopefully I haven't left anything out...
But as they say, it works for me.

I think step 2 is where the problem lies. I enable mock locations under the developer options. Where is enable GPS satellites? It is usually under Location but I only have Wi-Fi and Use Google...

I am so sorry, I had brainfreeze. On stock you need to do the:
Extras - includes enabling Unknown Sources - (rev3 - 5/6/2013)
From the | [CWM/ROOT/EXTRAS] HD/HDplus Stock Root and other Mods - via CWM flashable zips | thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613
to enable GPS permissions, and as a bonus sideloading of apks and userinit. I did this mod on my stock with no adverse effects. Of course, mileage may vary, so don't forget to do a backup if you do this as well.

This is where the problem lies. I have tried flashing that twice. looks like it flashes ok on CWM but GPS Satellite option never appears. Do I need to root first?
That thread seems to indicate you do not need to root but perhaps in this case it is incorrect
"All of the zips below can be installed and work without the Universal Root if you don't want to be rooted. Just copy any additional zips to the SD while it is inserted in the PC, remove from the PC, insert into the Nook again and boot to the CWM and install per the previous paragraph".
Thanks for your help so far!

Thanks for putting up with my brainfreeze.
Okay, revised steps, since you already loaded the 'Extras' and enabled 'Mock Locations'.
1) Pair Bluetooth GPS.
2) In Bluetooth GPS Provider choose your GPS receiver, and then press 'START'.
3) In Bluetooth GPS Provider 'Preferences' set GPS Type to SiRF ( if that is your type ).
4) Use GPS apps.
Everything else is just and illusion...

I'm looking at acquiring the BT359 and have a few questions if anyone is still following this...
Is there any reason to chose Bluetooth GPS Provider over the Globalsat's GPSInfo app?
Am I assuming correctly that this can be pointed at G-Maps?
Have you heard of or used any navigational apps that work?
TIA!

I haven't tried GPSInfo yet, I need to look into that.
I use Bluetooth GPS Provider with MapFactor: GPS Navigation, which is my new favorite.
It works on an unrooted tablet ( my new one - a Hannspree SN14T71, I know, huge ) with no built in GPS support, as well as my Nook HD+, which is rooted and on CM11.

Much appreciated RageAgain.
After reading up a little more on these 2 apps I noticed Bluetooth GPS Provider has more downloads, better reviews, recent updates and is noted to work with Google maps.
The manufacturer's app, GPSInfo hasn't been updated since 2011...
May I ask how sensitive the BT359 is in regard to placement of the device in an auto?
Would I be able to hide in in the console or glove box & still acquire position?
Also, I see I can use this on my phone as well... how is the trade off on battery between using the Bluetooth radio and built in GPS on a phone?
Thanks again!

As to sensitivity, I would say it is pretty good. You need line of sight, so you can't have metal in the way. I would say try it, as different vehicles have different specs as to metals and metallicized plastics.
Aside from running your own tests for power utilization per device, or looking up the chip specs, I would look for reviews for the particular device in question. I know this, I have Galaxy Players and the built in GPS is crap, so power consumption doesn't even come into the equation for those devices. On the other hand, I have an LG smartphone that I got cheap and even though I don't have phone service for it it works well as a stand alone device where GPS is concerned.
I mainly got my BT359s ( yes, I bought another to replace the one I couldn't find, and then my mom found it so I have two ) to use with tablets with no built in GPS.

Navigation without data?

Are there any apps that load full maps onto my gtab so I don't need to have a data connection to use my bt gps for navigation? As it is now, I believe Google navigation requires either wifi or tethering to work...
Co-pilot in market.
or you can find a version of motonav (basically igo 8.x) and maps from mobilism.org -- best 3d nav software out there that only requires gps, no data. map sets are ~1-2gb and you can get every single state and pretty much any country in the world now (teleatlas/navteq, mixed or whatever).
sort of tough for newbies to get really into customization, but i was huge into this on my past 2 mio devices, so if you need a hand drop me a line on here, no prob.
Thanks. I just dl'd co-pilot, but it says my trial is over, even though I entered my market order id.
I'll try motonav on my other machine and compare.

I use Co-Pilot. It is in the market, and if you want it for here in the good old USA it only costs $4.99..
Not as refined as a Garmin but it works. There is also NDrive. More expensive, more refined, I have never used it though..

I went round and round with Co-Pilot about that. I had it on my phone and had de-activated it but it would not activate on my G tablet. They sent me a link to download directly from them. It worked with my registration info after that.
How hard would it be to get Google navigation setup with an external GPS unit? I'll probably be picking up a GTablet soon, and am wondering how hard it would be to setup it as a navigator. Could it be done (if so, how easily) by hooking it up with a GPS unit? (Yea, it already does what I want the tablet to do, but its 3+ years old and slooooow to run haha). That or I could use the GPS on my phone once I get it running (HTC Vogue).

It is not hard to make GPS work with an external unit. Using Google Navigation though requires an internet connection since Google does not store the maps on your device. So you can use an external GPS receiver, and tether your phone for data. Or, there are ways to use the GPS in your phone and tether too. I have not tried it but hear it can be done.
BTW, I still have an ancient HTC Vogue that I run Android on too...

Yeah, my vogue has a slow data connection so I haven't bothered with any data-intense apps obviously like Google Nav. Guess I would need to get a different program on the Tab to hook up with the GPS unit itself. Any suggestions (preferable free ones haha?)

I would prefer to use Google nav because it works really well. The Vogue does not have wifi though and I have not found a way to tether it using bluetooth. So I use a program called Co-Pilot. It is only $4.99 in the market for the US version but it can be a pain to get activated on the G tablet. ALK who makes the program sent me a link to a non market version that did install with my registration info. It works ok, but not as well as Google nav. Seems to be missing plenty of addresses that are not new and should be there. They do have a way to let them know what is missing but I don't know how often they update.

Yes. I use CoPilot USA,$4.99 from the Market. You can download any or all US State maps for offline use. I use my DroidX as my BT receiver and it works like a charm. . . . I, too had trouble with activation. Had to send an email & call support Toni get it resolved.

No Joy with CoPilot
I purchased CoPilot through the Google Market place ($4.99 for USA) but no joy in installing it. Same 703 errors. Finally got through to someone in tech support (emails went unanswered) but their advice (basically wipe program and start again while downloading the maps separately onto my PC and then into the g-tablet) still resulted in errors. Since the holiday is coming up, this will probably not get solved in time for next weeks vacation/test run.
Oh well. For five bucks I wasn't expecting a lot and my MIO unit is still operational. Just hoping for some text to speech voice turns from my g-tablet. I will poke again after the holidays. Seems like a combination of the date not resetting or hard coded in the downloaded apk or authentification not getting out (since it is a wifi only machine; the program is expecting the telephone).
Unless anyone has any other suggestions?
success install after rom uprade
I installed latest ROM upgrade (3.1.1) and was able to get co-pilot installed and working. Combination of wiping user data and alk receiving gapps sales information.
No luck with John or Lisa. Anyone with hints for getting the voice portion working.

GTab navigation - Setup??

Ok, I understand the need GPS, etc... however, what seems to be overlooked is how is someone who is attempting to do this while in their car where the isn't wireless is going to make this work.
It seems to me that you need 4 things to make this work.
GTablet (duh)
GPS Receiver - BlueTooth for now (maybe USB someday)
Navigation App - Google Maps?? Maybe something else? Suggestions?
3G/4G card - how else could you get updates while moving?
It seems to me that without a 3G/4G card, you're GTab would have to all the entire map data loaded on the device - like a real GPS.
I'm not doing this now but someday I may. Did I get this right or did I miss something? Maybe someone is really doing this would chime in.
There are several threads about using your GTablet as a GPS Unit but I think you've pretty much outlined the requirements. I am using the TomTom Bluetooth GPS transponder, several pieces of software (some purchased and some free) and a paid app called Co-Pilot that has the maps and downloads them to my sdcard (since I don't have a 3G/4G option). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847936&highlight=GPS
I have reviewed quite a few threads. It just seemed that no thread acutally said you need all of this. Lots of thread on GPS, a few on apps, a few about 3G/4G cards. I was just trying to have a HowTo do it and keep it in one thread.
This thread seems to be a pretty explicit "how to do it"

http://www.appbrain.com/app/bluetooth-gps-provider/de.mobilej.btgps if you're using the new build/kernel with bluetooth working.
Otherwise, not going to work.
I have been able to successfully pair my NC with a Global Sat 352 bluetooth GPS receiver using CM nightly 17 and BlueGPS4droid. It works in Google Maps but the range is horrible, around 12 inches.
I have a really stupid question about this.
I don't see how it will work with just GPS.
I understand that GPS will give you location, but what about data for getting the maps?
When I'm using google maps on my blackberry or my wife's Iphone, it needs to download the map via data aside from just providing location.
Does the GPS do that as well?
Thanks for your patience.

You will need data connection (tethered to another phone if you are on the road) to use Google maps(navigation). There are a few programs (Navigon and Co Pilot Live are two I found)that install all the map data that they use to your SD Card so you don't need a data connection.
you need an external bluetooth gps receiver. Install the Program "Bluetooth GPS" to your nook and use it to connect the bluetooth GPS Receiver.
They are roughly $50+
It needs to be NMEA compatible.

The latest version of Google Maps will download and cache your route if you plan it in advance while on a WiFi connection, however, I haven't had a lot of success retrieving that cache once I get on the road...and usually end up re-downloading the map over my data connection.
So the answer is: You PROBABLY DO NEED a data plan. Unless you buy map software that downloads all the maps locally, there are a few Apps in the market.
There's a Gmap cacher program that I use on my netbook.
Perhaps something similar (or another gps program with prebuilt maps) for the nook?
(I think it's absolutely ridiculous to require a data connection for any program like this, it can be done preloaded at home. I also despise requirements of cell phone data plans based on this premise.......)
I know this is a little off topic but there's an app that allows you to share your phones gps over wifi.
You install the host on your phone and the client is installed on your book.
I am going to search for it.....

I'm looking at getting one of these guys from DealExtreme. The reviews are all pretty positive about the battery life, the speed, and it's ability to lock on to many satellites reliably.
I'm really close to pulling the trigger on one.
Working OK for me with my BT GPT-600 SiRF Star III GPS.
Range is about 3 feet, so that knida sucks, but same as all the rest of the BT range so far.
Same as this one:
http://compare.ebay.com/like/150572...fe1ec11&itemid=150572160930&ff4=263602_309572
Since I have an HTC EVO, I think I will still use the tetherGPS, so I can get the data along with it.
Is there anything like tetherGPS for other phone OSes (Blackberry, Windows Mobile, iOS)? I have a BB at the moment; they suck, but it does have a functional GPS chip.
thanks for the links guys. i will check them out

GPS Settings and Fixes

Due to a pretty high demand of people that have been PMing me about my GPS I would like to write up this short help guide that works for me and many other people that have tried these settings.
1. I would like to point everyone to this thread, the Solder fix did wonders on my phone and many others that have done it, it REALLY Does work and it REALLY does work well. If you know someone that can, or if you can solder yourself, DO IT, you will be very happy with the out come.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970
I Take no credit for the above fix as it put together by a few people, it really helped many people to get their GPS working properly, the solder step only added to it.
2. This is a step by step guide to MY settings that work on any rom that does not have a broken GPS kernel and always has great results.
A. Head to the Market and download SGS Tools, or search XDA for it.
B. Tuen off your GPS and Wireless Networks
C. Open SGS tools and click on Secret Codes
D. Click on GPS- Test and Settings (LBSTestMode)
E. Click on Application Settings, Change Operation mode to MS BASED
F. Go back one menu and click on SULP/CP Settings and change server to supl.google.com Port number 7576
G. Go back to the main GPS test menu and click Delete GPS Data
H. Reboot
I. Once fully rebooted, turn on your GPS ONLY, do not check use wireless networks.
J. Go outside, REALLY GO OUTSIDE, dont be lazy if you want this to work, Start up maps, or Nav and give it 3-5 minutes, you should have strong lock.
K. If you STILL CANNOT Get a lock, proceed to the next steps...
L. Head to the Markget and down load GPS Status
M. Open the app, click options, click tools, hit manage A-GPS state and hit download.
N. Let the app sit, WHILE YOU ARE OUTSIDE, you should now see a lock within a few minutes or so...
Anytime there after if you cannot get a lock, open GPS Status and redownload the A-GPS State and it should see a lock everytime. These are the settings I have been using for months and they work flawlessly on any rom I have been onm, as long as the Kernel allows it. Give it a shot, even if you dont apply the solder fix (But I cant stress enough to give it a go, it sounds a lot scarier then it really is and it will do wonders for your phone. Feel free to PM if you have any other questions and I will do my best to help
I think solder fix is not required for GPS devices after Oct 2010.
Anyways, what's difference in results for MS BASED and MS ASSISTED ?

thats what i want to know too
THis is what Google/ Wiki turned up
Standalone - The handset has no connection to the network, and uses only the GPS satellite signals it can currently receive to try to establish a location.
MS Based - The handset is connected to the network, and uses the GPS signals and a location signal from the network.
MS Assisted - The handset is connected to the network, uses GPS signals and a location signal, then relays its 'fix' to the server. Which then uses the signal strength from the phone to the network towers to further plot the user's position. Users can still maintain voice communication in this scenario, but not 'Internet/Network service', (i.e. Web browser, IM, streaming TV etc.)
MS Assisted/Hybrid - Same as above, but network functionality remains. Normally only in areas with exceptional coverage.
Great work Sols and Wood!!
Just in case anyone was looking for SGS Tools because I am not seeing it in the market. There is an SGS Toolbox in there but that is slightly different that this one. Do yourself a favor if you use GPS. Use Sol's settings and it will drastically improve your locks. I tend to drive on some backward country roads that don't have names, but rather numbers and the GPS always gets me right to the front door of my destination.
If you download the apk, click the thanks button. This isn't in the market anymore, fyi.
Thanks Woodrube, your the man!

Thanks Woodrube for popping in this app, when I am at the market after I download my paid apps (87), it is hard to remember all of the free apps that I need to download as well.
I'll give this a try when I get home tonight. I can get GPS locks on Froyo, but on GB or ICS roms it takes a long time to connect, if at all. Sometimes I have to reboot the phone (not really practical) and it'll give me a lock instantly.
Shame sgstools fc's when trying to access secret codes part for GPS.
I also tried to access lbstestmode settings from the old dialer numbers options but doesn't work for ICS.
Shame.... Would love to take a look at this.

Same here, running ICZ.
SGStools doesn't work for ICS ROMs. Never had and probably never will. Need to use something like AngryGPS or the like.

I'll test that when I get home, I just want to test it because I want faster locks. Last night I was testing the gps on paranoid 2.5.0 with Devil kernel 1.7.5 I these are my results. Again I need to know if I do this will lock the sats faster. Thanks in advance for this info!

GPS Tethering

When I saw the Black Friday deal for $37, I couldn't resist grabbing one to use as a bigger navigation screen. Ooops. I didn't realize it did not have GPS functionality. Thankfully, there are options to tether your phone's GPS to the Fire. I've tried several apps, and have gotten them to connect up, but I'm having issues with both Google Maps and Waze. Has anyone tried this and gotten it to work correctly? The issue I'm having, both apps will detect the correct GPS location and place my vehicle accordingly, but both apps also will not correlate that with navigation function. It's like they are half working. Can anyone confirm or deny getting it work correctly, and if so, which apps? I've tried a couple and have the same results with both. GPS Tether and TetherGPS.
I got it to work! There are some issues with dropped GPS signals, but I finally got the correct app and settings to have tethering working. I will be putting together a post explaining it, in case anyone wants to use their Fire as a navigation system.

First, you need to make a wifi hotspot with your phone. I'm on Verizon and have that as part of my plan. If not, look into FoxFi. Once you've got the hotspot up and running well with the Fire, then you need a GPS tethering app. I tried a lot and kept having issues with Waze or Google Maps not working right. TetherGPShttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.comptonsoft.tgps&hl=en is what worked for me. You need to install it on both devices. Also, you need to go into developer options and turn on mock locations. Once you're set up, just connect via the hotspot, open TetherGPS on your phone and start the server, then open it on the fire and start the client. I do have some issues with it dropping signal every so often, but a quick toggle of the client and it's working again. I hope that helps!
Also, grab yourself a magnetic dash mount. The Fire works great with the Scosche mounts from Walmart.
