People have asked since discovery of our beloved Ouya once you've got it out of the box you may have noticed that their is a USB port on the back.
After quick maintenance of my own personal testing USB will simply not run from stock.(Not that I'm fully aware of).
There are a few key ways of going about this, two ways as far as we know.
But I'm only teaching one.
First off, if you've plugged up a USB and didn't get a mount, there are a few steps to take to attempt to fix. I've got a positive affect to this, others have had different.
So let's start off first by using the ADB method of getting root a.k.a Superuser onto out device using the tut in the dev area.
Once you've accessed this, download "[root] StickMount" from the market. Assuming that this .apk can't be found on Google let's use an app to pull your .apk from the downloaded stuff you've gotten in the Google Play Store.
Now there are a few apps that do this, I used App2SD and rebuilt the .apk myself(which took a good while recoding), once you've pulled the .apk either load it tons cloud storage area you use, or side load it, you can also find a tutorial in the dev area as well.
Once you've got the app loaded make sure you set the setting properly to detect the USB you plan to use! This is key to getting something detected. From here you should be able to check in your file explorer and locate "ExternalSD" or whatever you see it fall under. If, and only if the USB doesn't show up, that may mean you've got the wrong format. I want each and all of you to give FAT32 a go as this is standard.
Warning, I don't know who all has tried this so if you're not happy with the occurrence, don't come beating my door in.

if the root and stickmount way works for 1000 GB+ storage sizes i have no idea. However i don't see how it should affect external storage size

You're doing it wrong, then. Mine mounted my fat32 USB ssd right out of the box. No extra apps or haxx needed. It mounts to /mnt/usbdisk or something along those lines.

All Ouya's should mount a harddrive with no problem. You just have to plug it in when it is off or restart using a app or the terminal. It just has to be OFF not in sleep mode.

No, there's different methods for different formats.
Terabytes won't read unless you've got a certain thing installed.

This is true, all of a sudden this week there were many people having trouble using their USB drives. Mine used to work until sometime this week. NTFS included. I was able to mount an NTFS-formatted 1TB Seagate Expansion drive earlier tonight. What I had to do was root my Ouya and use the USB OTG Helper app. I made a post on OuyaForums about it here.

I have a "2"gb, or 2,000,000,000 bytes. 1.86 real gb... anywho, its a Lexar jump drive I wanted to copy files with, and I have a single FAT32 partition and was not able to mount it simply by plugging it in. Tried rebooting, and re-plugging the device. It doesn't work. I imagine it may with stickmount.

Certain Jump drives will not mount because the USB port does not supply enough power. Powered USB drives or very efficient ones will work.

Nope. I have an 8GB usb stick and it doesn't work no matter what I do or what format I put it in. Haven't tried this method yet but what you're talking about does NOT work for everyone. And the powered 2TB external drive just causes Ouya to freeze every time at boot.

I have never seen a powered USB flash drive. Furthermore, if a flash drive isn't mounting due to the port not outputting enough power, then the drive or the mobo is broken or otherwise failing to adhere to the spec. External hard drives (spinning platters) of the type common a few years ago when flash drives were cost prohibitive generally DO require an external power source (or at least draw from 2 USB ports), but they generally aren't referred to as jump drives. In my experience (which is considerable but not infinite) most flash drive issues tend to be due to bad connections after the drive is beat up or by managing to write past the end of the drive. Flash media is generally reliable and does not draw more power than the USB port puts out by spec. I highly doubt that power supply problems are a common cause of mounting issues.

It seems that you just wanna shun the method I gave you.
If you dont want help, that's fine with me but please don't come into my threads to tread on my method.
Firstly, I need to know!
Are you rooted or stock?
If either, have you installed Ouya Plus?
If so! Try the given method above or Google an apps that suits your needs.
We are here to help, and I'm telling you right now that this method has worked for me, and maybe other users.
FACT:
Not all Ouya have been able to read USB from start, more than others have reported having issues with USB and have had to use the root method to even get a reading.
TIP:
Wanna check and see if your device is/has been read?
Please either use FX File Manager or Astro as these are the best at the moment. Both can be found and side loaded onto the Ouya.
Once you've installed either one, go to the manager, do you see an "External Drive" or "USB Mounted Drive" on the device? You're good to go.
ADVICE:

I've only heard of Apps2SD working with ROOTed Ouyas only.
If you can't find the solution here, go and check the official forums, there are some people there who helped me.

Mine wouldn't work right out of the box. I turned it on and set it up. Plugged in my 2.5" spare laptop USB 3.0 HDD. Nothing. 32gb NTFS Thumb drive. Nothing. 16gb FAT32. Nothing. MicroSD 16gb (used in my MK808). Nothing. Thought my USB was blown. Plugged in a PS3 Sixaxis controller and it worked. So something was strange.
Read online that there was a firmware patch that must have broke some things. I'm assuming this broke if a USB was previously mounted.
Only a Factory Reset would fix it. Plugged in the USB HDD and it booted right now first time. Spent 2 days screwing with it.
So if nothing mounts, factory reset. It SHOULD mount out of the box. FAT32 and NTFS are both confirmed to work with no additional apps.

I did a factory reset, still wouldn't work. I lost hours of work to set it up.
I managed to fix it with a script after about 5 hours

yeah no problem. However i REALLY fail to see how this belong in the development section. This should be for ROMs, MODs and tweaks, not really how best to get a build in stand feature working. No matter how bad it has been implemented by OUYA.
Could some of the mods look into moving OP's topic?

I think all you have to do is to slide top panel in SGS down and click on USB notification to mount your phone storage.

Personally didn't figure it out till a week into owning the phone that there was an extra step
involved in activating mass storage mode.
As mentioned, just slide down the top taskbar, click on the usb alert box and mount.

Supposedly, one should firstly "safely remove hardware" via the usb window on the PC anytime there is
a need to sever a USB connection to a device.
However, in all honesty, I only know a handful of people who ever do this, and I'm not one of them.
Most if not all products with connections via USB won't be affected when it is just manually unplugged (disconnected from usb port)
unless you have data being transferred while you unplug/disconnect the usb device.
But for devices with their own proprietary OSes (PMP, MID, MP3 players, phones, etc.), it is recommended
you follow whatever steps they provide for you in the manual.

Thanks. I kinda freaked out today when I clicked "safely remove hardware" AND "remount internal SD card" on the SGS. The device later failed to recognize the internal SD card and screen went black. I thought I had bricked it and killed my internal SD. From now on, I might use an external microSD card to transfer movies into my device.
In the user guide it states "You need a USB On-The-Go micro cable adapter to connect HTC phone and a USB storage device. HTC phone supports USB storage devices (except portable hard drives) up to 64 gb."
I have downloaded ASTRO File manager and on attaching the OTG cable to the ONE and than the 64 GB GB Flash Drive, I am unable to find the flash Drive. The drive illuminates but is not discoverable on the phone. I don't know if 64 gb is too large a flash drive, but it seems strange to state up to 64 GB if it can't take it.
Any help would be appreciated. The phone is locked to 3 and is running 4.1.2.

Are you going up to the root of the filesystem or looking in the built-in storage where DCIM, documents etc.. live? You won't find an attached drive inside your "SDCard".

I have opened Astro File Manager and am presented with the options under locations of
1, My Files
2 Scan local Networks
3 google mail
4 box
5 Drop box
6 Facebook.
7 Sky Drive
No where in any of the folders, do I find anything that resembles what appears to be a flash drive. Please advise so that I can get this to work.

I don't have astro, but best location to start would be my files, then look in the settings to see if you need to change something to allow access to the root filesystem. To be honest the easiset thing to do would be to install root explorer as it will default to top level of the filesystem. Should see a folder called something like "USB storage" there.
Use ES File Explorer much better.
All you do then is press the / button and it takes you to root of the phone and then from there you can choose sdcard.
I think the 64gb flash is formatted as exfat. try formatting it to fat32 instead.

Strange, on my ES File explorer I needed to enable "Up to root" in settings and press the folder with the up arrow on it. Can't see a / button anywhere, just in the location history.

As has already been mentioned, it has nothing to do with size, only how you've formatted it. It can read any drive that goes up to the maximum of FAT32 (2TB IIRC).

theres an app that you get that will help mount ntfs over otg.
and yes you can mount portables.

Like skram said....there is an app in the appstore for that and it is free. you can watch full 1080p movies above 4gb with no cropping. you are looking for an excuse to go with plastic.

I have tried Paragon's NTFS driver. But two reasons I wouldn't choose it:
1. Requires rooting. I'm past the experimenting-with-my-phone stage since a long time back.
2. Doesn't work with the internal 32/64GB.
And no, I wouldn't choose Samsung. My current phone is the Sony XP, which with its aluminium body seems to be HTC's inspiration.

have you tried usb otg helper? it requires root also but looks more promising than paragon's ntfs driver.
if your no longer experimenting with mods, roms, tweaks, root, and such then why even bother checking out xda?

I do still experiment with ROMs. Right now I'm trying to get the newly announced JB for the SXP. But beyond loading different ROMs, I'm not interested tweaks etc.

Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

Understood. Hardware manufacturers modify drivers so frequently though that that is probably the issue. Can't say that I've attempted to connect to my linux box yet...

I know. Never understood the need for specialized drivers when they could just mount as a standard USB Mass Srorage device and be compatible with everything out of the box
But I guess that would just make too much sense...
Has anyone tried a otg with it yet

I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

chazall1: You have to authorize the computer on the device. The screen must be on and unlocked.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.

Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:

Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?

According to Verizon, its not possible to connect the Turbo as a mass storage device. Epic fail in my opinion... U can bypass it by using google drive...

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.

I have access to a 3D printer, and I was thinking of designing a case with a bare flash drive built in. If I cut one of the USB OTG cables down that allows usb and charging simultaneously and fit it in the case design would I be able to have the USB connected and still be able to charge? If that is a possibility, is there a way to trick Android into thinking that the USB drive is instead an SD card? If we could trick Android into thinking it was an SD card wouldn't we be able to merge the flash drive with the internal storage and increase the storage capacity of the phone? My other thought for this idea was using multirom, and just sticking a 256gb flash drive in the case and just booting off of that. Do either of these ideas sound like they would work well at all? I just have the 32gb model and it just isn't enough.
No. The phone will not charge while in USB host mode, if you try to just throw in voltage you'll burn out the flash drive and or damage your phones micro USB port.
You're multirom idea wasnt bad. But all multirom does is allow a system partition to be installed with an image to a flash drive, and then boot it from the flash drive. It still reads data cache and such off your devices partition.
How are you using your storage? I got use to the "no expandable storage" with my lg and Galaxy Nexus.
Are you encrypted? Unencrypt your phone, you'll save 1.5-2gbs of storage capacity. Use Google photos to backup your photos and videos in HD quality and have it delete files after backup. Do you flash roms? Go through your android/data and Android/obb folders and delete everything related to apps you don't use.
It's not a bad idea to backup music/photos/videos to a PC, then wipe internal storage and restore all the photos and such. You would be amazed at how much storage our phones will use that you can't find and delete without digging around.

I am un-encrypted so I do have that little bit of extra space. I have a lot of music on my phone for listening in the car. LTE is spotty where I live, so streaming isn't a great option. I was under the impression that with a modified kernel it is possible to charge and access a device at the same time. Doesn't the nexus 7 have a kernel that allows that? If that is in fact possible is there a way to trick android into thinking that it's an sd card instead of a flash drive?

lets you use any external storage device as adoptable storage letting you use a OTG drive as internal storage. Could've just been my drive but it stalled at 20% for a couple minutes, mighta finished but my OTG adapter is kinda flaky and lost connection. After a bit of reading I've learned it might be since my phone isn't encrypted and adoptable storage is encrypted by default.
Also from what I understand about OTG things is that you CANNOT charge the phone while it's connection with OTG even wirelessly.
Though with the N6 having USB 2.0 it'll likely be very very slow.

Awesome!! Thank you. I'll do some tinkering maybe this weekend to see what I can come up with. That was exactly what I was looking for as far as adoptable storage!
EDIT: I ran the adb command you gave me through terminal emulator on the phone itself after giving it root access. All 3 flash drives I tried integrated with my internal storage just phone. All 3 were 32gb usb 3.0, but each was a different brand. I built a custom "y" cable, but you can buy them on Amazon. I'm talking with a kernel developer and it seems it is possible to charge the phone at the same time. Both the nexus 4 and 2013 nexus 7 have custom kernels that allow what's called USB OTG Host mode that allows the device to charge and use a USB device at the same time. From what I can tell it's a kernel module that needs to be added. For the nexus 4 it was just a zip file that patched whatever kernel you were currently using. I don't have a lot of experience with compiling kernels, but I'll try and find out what needs to be done and fire my Ubuntu box up.
Hi ,can anyone recommend a good app for copying/ moving file on an Android device? My Razor2 is rooted, I'm having trouble copying, moving, or transferring files between the system, internal sd, and external sd card.
The Android system sucks, is slow and sometimes hangs up in definitely. Some app don't even see the usb sd cards.
I've used Root Explorer for awhile and I've liked it a lot.
I'll give it a try. It utilizes the external SD card and the USB port, both?

Not sure about the USB port, but it does have access to the external SD.
Solid explorer. It's been my exclusive file manager since like 2012.

I have used it before too. I mostly use Es File Explore. Had very good luck with it. But Android Os has made it very difficult, unreliable, to moving files especially to otg drives. If the aap even see's the drive. I've ftied both last night, and again they don't see the usb otg drive plugged into the phone. The Files system app does. I even had the razor 2 format the drive, but no fix. Moving multiple files with system File app always hangs up indefinitely.
Google's Android Os ain't what it used to be!
I use solid explorer it's a solid file manager!
