[Q] SD Card not installed - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I recently bought a HTC One, I rooted it cause I wanted to change the htc icon to being operational so then flashed the kernel teaMSeven-sense-4.2.2-kernel-v2.1.4.zip. All appeared to be fine but now I am being told that I have no SD card installed so I can't access my photos, use my camera or access the Dropbox app properly. I presume there are some other issues but can't be sure yet. When I connect my computer to my laptop I can access the internal storage without a problem. When I go to recovery mode and go to Advanced - File Manager - sdcard I can see all the folders. Also when I go to mount and try it first gave an error that usb-otg couldn't mount and now it hangs at updating partition details.
Please help!

your sd card is there. there are some fixes in the development section. Take a look there

try this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1YiI-ZZGBs

USB OTG is not your internal storage.

I had the same issue and that video is far too complicated for what you actually need to do.
This is what I did when I upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 on my HTC One.
Issue: You will have a new place for your data now. The default under 4.2.2 is now /data/media/0. Under 4.1.2 it was /data/media. Notice the extra /0 - that's for a multi-user environment.
Resolution: Needs root access, of course.
1. Install ES File Explorer
2. Enable ES File Explorer to have root under it's settings.
3. Navigate to /data/media
4. Ta-da! All your old files are there! NOW...
5. Select and move your files that you want to keep from /media/data to /media/data/0
This worked for me 100%. My free storage was only 2.58Gb with a fresh 4.2.2 install. Because I moved all my wanted files across and deleted all the other legacy items, it's now about 13Gb free.

Used the youtube vid so thanks for that osmosizz, worked well and thought me a bit in the process like getting your java paths right!!
Will try your method Joe if this happens again, cheers

Fixing "Unknown reason 18" market error

So I was getting unknown reason 18 error when trying to install certain apps from the market.
I've googled and search the forum. The best answer I could get was to wipe and reinstall the ROM, which I did not want to do.
Then I checked the logs and figured out the problem was that all those apps that would fail were trying to install on SD card by default.
The solution: move all the apps back to phone, put your microSD into a card reader and delete .android_secure folder. That's it!
didn't work for me
Worked
That worked for me. For ever I could not update Sky map. When I could not install Angry Birds I went "searching".
Thank you for the fix.
I don't think it'll work for me either.
None of my apps are on my SD. I know this because I can't even do that. When I try to transfer an app to sd it the progress bar just hangs there (doesn't move it just shows the striped pattern)
It worked!
Hey ho, it worked!! Finally the nagging issue is resolved (for me)
I can't find that folder/file! :S
.android_secure is hidden, you need to enable showing hidden files on your file manager. I use ES File Manager and it has such feature.
...or, you can just make sure your app is installed on the phone, then unmount the SD before updating.

Holy crap! It worked for me. I didn't have anything installed on the SD card either.
when your market chache is moved to the SD then move it back to the internal memory and clear the market data...
Worked for me... Thanks a lot...
i've had this error for quite some time - i realized i need to move the app back to phone in order to update it and then move it back to SD card.
Will try this method!
Thanks for posting
thank god this!!!!! work i'm was getting piss off at is unknown 18 **** it was hunting me in my dreams THANKYOU
Please, I have the same problem but I haven't space in my phone to return the SD apps. Is there another way to solve this?
Simple FIX
Just take out the sd card, install whatever is giving you an error, then pop the sd card back in. No fuss no muss!
Nice SIMPLE solution!
Thank you. Didn't involve rooting the phone, installing adb, saying magic mantras etc. etc.
Thanks

Ok, so I figured out a solution that is hopefully "better" and "quicker" for all. Simply connect your phone to your computer (as USB Mass storage), browse to the folder '.android_secure' (make sure you can view hidden files/folders in windows) and delete the file 'smdl2tmp1.asec' (I just renamed it 'smdl2tmp1.asec.delete' just in case it didn't work).
Problem solved! Everything updates just fine now and I didn't have to move any apps back from the SD card to the phone.

zero need to delete, move, etc.
Just unmount the SD, instead of taking it out...

Write-Protected internal SD (Found problem)

Hi,
I'm using Darky's 5.5 Rom and after flashing the Advanced Voodoo 5 v1.1 Final final kernal. I can't change files on my internal SD, when I try to use mass storage and copy files, I get the error cannot copy due to "Write-protected".
I did a search and didn't get any hits
Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
EDIT: Nevermind, its a known problem in Advanced Voodoo 5 v1.1 Final that the internal SD mounts as a cd drive.
Hi there, question you mentioned that the problem has been solved?
Can you point me into the right direction please?
Thanks.

Look on the first page of the Darky Gingerbread thread, there is a link to "Known problems" -- one of them is the SD card issue .. basically the int SD is being mounted with the wrong permissions. There is a zip to fix those permissions.
My problem was that since I couldn't even WRITE to my card, how the hell could I put the zip on my card ....
Two solutions:
a) Bluetooth transfer
b) Easier -- go to Market and install DropBox .. do the same on your PC , then you can swap files back and forth between phone and PC without connecting via USB.
hope this helps

Moving CoPilot GPS maps to sdcard1

Update:
I made a tutorial how to get CoPilot save the maps on the external sd card.
For this method you don't need any root access so it should work for almost everyone.
Make sure you check check whether your sdcard path is /storage/sdcard0 or /mnt/sdcard
For me it worked fine without rooting the phone.
I have a samsung ace plus S7500
I made a copy of
/mnt/sdcard/com.alk.copilot.eumarket.premiumeupan/
to
/mnt/sdcard/external_sd/com.alk.copilot.eumarket.premiumeupan/
then (with KIES), i changed the
user.cfg situated in /mnt/sdcard/com.alk.copilot.eumarket.premiumeupan/
then i erased the
/mnt/sdcard/com.alk.copilot.eumarket.premiumeupan/EU/
The adapted user.cfg would be changed like this
[Directories]

Hi guys,
so this topic came up quite a few times for other phones, however I cannot get it working on my Razr I.
And I am talking about the Live version (that is the newest version which comes with all countries in 1app), not the Premium or Lite one.
So I want to move the maps folder to the external sdcard....
Basically what I did is this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42581577&postcount=2
But of course instead of /storage/extSdCard/ I used /storage/sdcard1/com.alk.copilot.mapviewer/
But after starting CoPilot Live it still overwrites the user.cfg file back to its normal settings (sdcard0)
Does anyone have a solution for that?
I also found out that there is a file called DeviceInfo.xml in the save folder that also has the sdcard0 included...

Dear Michael, your tutorial is fantastic, it is logical, clear and easy to follow, unfortunately the text of my “user.cfg” file is different, the text contained often the word “emulated” but there is nowhere the word “mapviewer “ I wonder if you could give me a push in the right direction. The device I am running is Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900i) and the CoPilot version is 9.5.0.440 Europa and USA

Hi Erik,
just look for the RootDir and SpeechDir tag in the config and change that from your internal card to your external card.
If you still need help, start at step 1 again and then copy the config file to your PC and upload its content to pastebin.com so I can have a look at it.

Hi Dagoban,
I followed your tutorial and it worked great. At least up to yesterday, where I updated CoPilot to version 9.6.0.634. Now the phone directory no longer says /storage/sdcard0 but /storage/emulated/0/.
Changing the Root and Speech directory (in my case to extSdCard) doesn't allow downloading of Maps on my SD card anymore.
Any thoughts or tips?
Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,
I had a similar problem with Galaxy S5 (SM-G900i), and rooting the phone did not help, after receiving just silly answers from ‘CoPilot Technical Support’ I purchased the application from ‘Sygic’ it cost a few Dollars more but for this you get annual several map updates and the service is excellent. The maps are slightly larger in size but the whole application can be transferred to external SD card (by cut and paste) for me it was an easy solution.
Cheers Erik
Seems to work, basically

I tried this on my Atrix HD with Cyanogen 10.2, and it seems to work. The Atrix uses an "emulated" sdcard0, so it had some issues, but I edited the user file & continued the install. When I ran copilot initially, it seemed to have some problems. I kept getting "Do you really want to quit" messages when I would try and move through menu options. I turned on GPS (which I had not done prior) and after a minute or so, I was able to browse the map, so maybe that was the issue. Now, when I fire up Copilot, it seems to behave. I tried an "goto" address in another state, and the route was correct, so I'm saying thanks very much for the process you developed. I really wish that ALK would just add this to their software.

It seems that android 4.4.2 has limited access permission of the external SD card. Have a look at howto-avoid-the-eacces-permission-denied-on-sdcard-with-kitkat-4-4-2-version on stackoverflow (I can't post the link!).
I tried to change the folder permission via chmod but no lock. What is the workaround?

Michael previously published an instruction on how to move the maps to SD card, but his instruction does not work with the recent KitKat version of Android. People look for methods to root the device to obtain access to SD-cards. Still it is perfectly possible even with unrooted devices. Edit folder path for Rootdir and Speechdir so that it would point to a folder "Android/data/" at your SD card. For example, for Samsung Galaxy 5, it would be "storage/extSdCard/Android/data/...". Save the file user.cfg. If you have a different brand, your external SD card might be called differently, this is why copilot guys do not want to mess with external cards (shame on them, btw).
It worked for me with Kitkat. Have found somewhere that every application under Kitkat gets its own folder in Android/data with full writing rights. But the folder should be named strictly after the application name. If you copy the folder to any other place and adjust user.cfg accordingly, it might not work, since the application tries to write something into folders, too.

That worked great, Shato. Thanks. It even worked on my phone which doesn't have enough free internal memory for the maps. I downloaded the maps on my tablet and copied the folder to the SD. Then I put the SD in the phone and applied the config change.
An update the developer should do - detect extsd during app install/update
Seems like a lot of trouble. With Sygic's app, all you have to do is move the folder, launch the app, and clean up whatever old filder remains on internal sd.
[*ttp://help.sygic.com/hc/en-us[/*
Haven't tried a Sygic app upgrade since I moved it, but added maps all go to extsd.. I have noticed one small issue. If I shut my device off, it rediscovers the extsd and remounts it, and it can take a whie to finish indexing it (2 minutes with my 32GB U-1 cl 10 card) and until it does, apps using fies from the extsd seem to hang. on launch I say seem to. If allowed to wait, they eventually open unless they err after loading some of their files, but aren't able to access all of them..
The work around is not to shut completely down, but sleep or suspend after putting the device in Airplane mode to minimise drain.
Yeah, I know this doesn.t solve the CoPilot\Kitkat issue, but I had to stop using CoPilot because I ran out of space on internal SD. I'm not going to deal with an app that requires massaging after every revision, and this one has enough bugs that it needs revisions, not just map updates. When I see an announcement that either Google lifts the extSD restrictions (in L I hope), or Copilot fixes its code, I'll use Sygics free version with all its limitations- disable its app from updating, and manually update the few state maps I use periodically.
I was learning to live with CoPilots quirks untilI I ran out of space. Syngic isn't as nice to use, and has its own quirks, but at least it doesn't have to fill my internal SD with maps of states to which I'll never go., and it's too pricy for me to buy the full version, so I lose turn by turn.
BTW, both apps suffer from many inaccuracies suburban and low pop density maps, but Syngic's are slightly better, in that adddresses are more often correctly located on the right side of roadways and nearer to the correct ends of irregularlyoshaped "blocks"..
I am running an LG Optimus L70 (D321) with kitKat 4.4.2
After just installing copilot, and stopping at the point it wants to install the maps, I see that copilot is scattered all over the place
It has files in /data/app-lib/
/data/data
/data/media/0/
/data/user/0/
/mnt/sdcard/
/mnt/shell/emulated/0/
/pkg/
/storage/emulated/0/
Several have the user.cfg file in them.
Which one do I edit? Which one do I move to my external SD card.
On my phone the external is /storage/external_SD/Android/
This was way easy in ICS
OK, got things moved around so my maps go to my EXTERNAL SD card.
On my LG Optimus L70 (D321 Cricket) running kitkat 4.4.2 the external sd card is located:
/storage/external_SD/Android/data/
you must point to the "ANDROID/DATA" or it will not work.
I did find one short issue, Copilot still looks at the INTERNAL SD CARD for the amount of available storage. It may balk if you try to download the entire USA, 1.77 GB or all of North America 1.87 GB. I had to DL it in sections and all worked fine.

(GUIDE) Hisense SERO 7 LT (Root, ClockWorkMod & EXT SD Swap)

This info is all over the place on the forum so I decided to add it to its own little area for those who need it. Enjoy
I am going to step by step tell you how to root and get CWM recovery in hopes this will help someone and in turn they can help me by at the least giving me a nandroid backup or something so I can restore my brick. I take no credit for these meathods theywere done by other XDA members I am only repeating what I searched and read throughout the XDA threads if you want to know who the members are Google or search XDA.and I take no responsability for anything you do to your device thats on you this is all for your reading pleasure.
ROOT From Klown80's post
Before doing anything make sure your device is completely updated
#1 you can search all over to get the drivers to connect your tablet or use this: Snap Pea Android Connect (Make sure you have USB Debugging checked under the Dev settings before you connect your device when prompted

Use EXT SD card as Internal Memory
#8 You must be rooted.
#9 Download Root Explorer ( only if you dont have it) from playstore(paying ) or use ES File Explorer ( free) from playstore. Then instal it.

Here is the open source firmaware from the Hisense site for anyone who can use it: Hisense Sero 7 Open Source Kernal and firmware 4.1.1
Do we have any ROMs being ported or developed for me to actually need to install CWM? I have two SERO 7 LTS for my girlfriends kids and I love to Tinker with every android I get my hands on. I already have them rooted and over clocked with some Xposed modules.

Some people like to have nandroid backups after rooting their device and as far as ROMs this device may be low priced but after you do the mem swap with 32gb and having a 1.6ghz dual core your batting 100% maybe people will figure out the financial advantage here
Oh that's true, I'm not a developer or anything near it. But I get what you're saying if I take a nandroid back up, than there's not as much worry about me tinkering either as I could just restore my backup +1 to you.

Nandroid backup or RKImage stock?
May you be much blessed, kind sir!
I don't know what your status is yet on Jan 10th but I have successfully fixed a Sero 7 LT for a friend's daughter using the stock recovery bootloader menu and an RK image. Make sure your Sero is fully charged overnight on the 2 amp adapter that comes with it. You will know it is fully charged because if you unplug it and then plug it back in after 10 seconds, there will be no "charging" symbol that comes up on the screen after about 10 seconds from plugging it in. It will stay dark.

Download Option #1 from Mediafire
Use 7Zip to expand, you'll need at PC card reader adapter for your Micro SDHC and possibly a USB to SDHC reader. For some reason my HP laptop doesn't like to read adapted micros in the normal slot on the laptop, so I used a MediaGear XtraDrive MGXS-200-HC on my Win7x64.
Once 7Zip has expanded the .img file rename it to update.img and then place it on the root of your micro SDHC. I did a quick format with mine beforehand just to be sure there were no other files that were going to interfere.
Do the normal bootloader from your Sero 7 LT: Volume Down & Power until Hisense, then with Android on his back, POWER FIRST and VOLUME UP once.
The option is down about 3/4 of the way "RKimage"
It will be looking for Update on root, which is the only option. Select with Power button and it will tell you it found it and would like to verify. Select OK and then wait. The first time it goes through the file, nothing will happen. It will CRC the file, boot to the spinning circle screen as if it is a bootloop and then the screen will go blank.
Simply press the power button quickly to turn the screen back on and it will tell you it has found the file it needs and are you ready to restore the update.image. Touch yes, and the whole process will start over. This time when Android finishes, it will boot correctly and ask you for your language input as if right from the store!
Good luck!
Who knows if it is working or not?
I followed the steps listed here for using the external memory card as internal memory. Unfortunately, the only thing I can definitively say about it is that it will make ES File Explorer stop working.

I have been using ES FILE EXPLORER ever since I did this and have not had that issue. Weird!
Still can't get it to work
I followed the instructions and tried to use the vfold file you created so I can use my external SD card as internal memory. It still won't work. When I try to move your vfold file to the etc folder, it won't let me, saying that it is a read-only drive. This is very frustrating. I can't imagine what on earth Hisense was thinking when they made the SD card internal. Isn't there a way to just switch the names of the SD card and the external SD card?

Its not his sense its the jellybean os that's makes the card internal. Are you rooted? You have to be rooted for this procedure, then you move the vold file using root explorer or some other program that will allow you to change from read only to write.
I desperately want to install CWM to my Hisense Zero 7 Lite but in your instructions I have NO IDEA what "chmod" means. Once I figure that step out I should be good. Thank you in advance.
That is the permissions you need a file explorer then get the option for the file and choose permissions and change the permission and save it
CWM Help : (
Holy cow it has taken me a week to figure this out and now I feel like a total idiot. I was trying to change the permissions of the file "update.img" which it would not allow me. It never occurred to me in days that "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" WAS the file I needed to change permissions for. I've read that line at least a hundred times, ha ha. Once it clicked that I was trying to alter the wrong file it took me literally 5 seconds to fix the issue and FINALLY install CWM. Thank you for this post and for replying to my question. Awesome. Now I shall go wipe the stupid sweat off my brow.
Question about internal memory
Hey all, thanks to this excellent guide I now have my tablet rooted. Now that I'm rooted I've been using SnapPea to move apps to the SD card, which was my goal all along. But since I'm still new to this, I was wondering if it would be better to follow the part of the guide that says "Use EXT SD card as Internal Memory." Is there any difference between moving apps to SD with SnapPea and making the SD internal memory? It would be nice if it was all one block and I didn't have to choose what went where (plus some apps don't work right if they are on the SD). Thanks!
Cant get my Sero 7 lite to use the sd card as the storage
Hey there, done lots of reading. I got the tablet rooted, (checked with root checker and titanium backup) HOWEVER I cant get Super user to update its binary, it keeps saying fail. I can access the root and move stuff around, but no permission window pops up. I did the vold file and got it transferred into the external SD card, and system and etc folder. Now if I reboot it, it gets stuck on the Smart screen unless I remove the SD card.
The tablet is now reading the internal flash as if it were an external SD card, and not showing a nand flash. I'm quite stuck. I assume its probably a little thing that needs changed but i cant find it anywhere!
16GB Internal SD...with apps?
So I've got my 16GB SD card showing as the internal SD.
Now, I can't install/move apps to the new internal SD storage.
How can I fix this?
Thanks!
First off, I apologize for my noob-ness. but I have no idea what "chmod 644 /" means. How do I initiate the chmod 644? I have managed to root my sero 7 lite, but CWM didn't install.
Also are there any custom roms using a newer version of android available yet? Thanks a lot!
CWM RECOVERY This is from Takenover83's post
#4 First download the ClockworkMod Recovery Image here: CWM Recovery Image Download
#5 Upload the image to your external SD card/ Micro SD and change the name of the file to " update.img "
#6 use a file manager like root explorer or ES file manager or whatever and right click the file and chmod 644 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (This is extremely important it will not work otherwise)
#7 I just simply plugged my SD card into the tablet and it updated automaticaly but if that isnt the case for you go into the stock recovery and Choose the option to update via rkimage from external storage

I'm trying to make an external SD card act as internal. For some reason, I get a fail to copy error when trying to copy the vold.fstab file to the etc folder. It says it doesn't have permission. Any ideas? Did the rooting process not take properly?

EDIT: I managed to finally make it work, by downloading another superuser app. This one simply called Superuser. I was able to copy to the root folders and change the file permission in the system folder after this through the ES File Explorer app. How do I know that the system is using the external sd card as internal now? In settings it still looks the way it did before.
We do have a kernel source for this tablet.
http://www.hisense-usa.com/support/firmware.asp
Search for Sero 7 LT
With that we could get CM13 and what not ported over. Something tells me given the info @dolorespark mentioned with the Sero 7 Pro kernel source having quite a bit of bad coding that the Sero 7 LT will have the same issues potentially.
Hi guys and gals, I have a Hisense sero 7 le e2371, as far as I can tell it is the same as the lt lite, the difference is it is the Australian version! My question is, how to install twrp, it is rooted, but i cannot install anything via stock recovery, no fastboot mode, no bootloader mode! Any help will be greatly appreciated. PS, it is running kitkat 4.4.2, i ultimately want to upgrade it to lollipop or even marshmallow, one day, lol thanks in advance

[Q] Restore symlink to external SD after update to 4.1.2 / V20B?

Hi guys, I updated my P880 to V20B and now have problems with using the external SD properly. I found it being mountend to storage/external_SD and I can read/write there. BUT: I can't set a folder on it as the backup location in Super Backup (as I could before), my LG notes aren't backed up automatically to the external SD location (as it was before), and I expect many similar problems to arise with time.
Formerly, the external SD was mounted to mnt/sdcard/external_sd, if I remember correctly. Now this symbolic link (?) is missing. When I performed the update and then first booted the updated device, I had the external SD removed to make sure my backups were safe. Might that be the reason for the missing link? My questions are:
1. Should I flash the kdz again with the SD card inserted? Or at least perform a factory reset?
2. Or could the link be created afterwards, preferrably without rooting my device? Would that solve the problem, at all?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Nothing?
How about formatting SD card ? Did you tryed that ? On 20a my card is read as storage/external_SD just fine.

Hey dimi, thanks for the suggestion! However, I am afraid you didn't read my post very carefully. I wrote that I actually CAN read/write to my external SD. But I cannot set the path in applications like Super Backup (when I navigate to some folder on storage/external_SD, the button "Select this folder" is inactive). And I suspected it is because it is no subpath of mnt/sdcard anymore. Also, some apps like LG notes don't write/backup to the external SD by default any more, and some of them unfortunately are not configurable.
That's the reason why I thought creating a simbolic link for mnt/sdcard/external_sd (as it was before) might solve the problem. However, I am absolutely not sure of this (plus: how to achive it) and would be happy about an expert's opinion.

I can set path anywhere on storage/sdcard, but not on storage/external_SD. Also the Notes application doesn't back up to external SD, as it did before. Coincidence? Maybe. I will find out with time using other applications.
Am I right that creating symbolic links without root access is not possible?

Idk about creating links but it is not coincidence that you and me cant select any folder on external_SD i guess it is app bug or maybe as i sad premium version requirement.

It worked on 4.0.3.
Hi again, I made some progress here!
I managed to create a symbolic link to my external SD (I am on a rooted CM10.1.3 now), but that didn't help. I could use it within the ES file explorer for navigation, but not within Super Backup (didn't see it). So I tried to MOUNT the external SD instead. Here is the command I finally used:
mount -t vfat -o rw,umask=000 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /data/media/0/extSD
No errors, I can access my SD via this mount point with ES file explorer, and I can navigate into this top folder now with Super Backup and select it as backup location. BUT I can't actually back up here, as Super Backup can't write, I guess ("backup failed").
I was hoping that this "umask" parameter would do the trick, but unfortunately not. Interestingly: when I navigate with Super Backup to this new backup location, all the subfolders of my external SD card appear as files, not folders.
I am pretty sure, it is nearly done and only has to do with setting the right permissions.
Does anyone have an idea what I could try now?
EDIT: I just unmounted, applied "chmod 777 /data/media/0/extSD" and remounted again (this time with "rwx" parameter). No changes.
Ok, I am back to 4.0.3 ICS and everything is fine.
