[Q] New Google Maps work on Galaxy Exhibit 4G? - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

On July 11, Google rolled out a new version of Google Maps for Android (V 7.0.1) for Android versions 4.0.3 and greater (less than 4.0.3 get a different update, I think.). I have used Maps and Navigation extensively for a long time. I also have used Waze. The new version of Google Maps will reroute you if traffic builds up on your route (just like Waze). I was looking forward to that feature.
I am currently running CM10 and the new Maps doesn't work well. The graphics are jumpy and stitchy (?). When I hit the options button during Navigation it brings up the menu, but then shortly thereafter that menu is covered up by the previous graphic and I can't see what I am supposed to select.
I don't know if it is a limitation of my phone, my ROM, or if Maps is buggy. On my previous phone, at one point I had to stop updating Maps because my phone wasn't powerful enough. I hope that isn't the case for the Exhibit and maps now.
I would like to hear from others, both good and bad, about their experience with the new maps.
Thanks.

The lag and stickyness is due to phone's ram. its optimized for phone with ics or jb out of box, which have sufficient ram. I was surprised to see it actually run on our phone

Thanks for the response. Sorry I am a bit slow. Can you clarify? Did you load it and also experience poor performance or are you just giving your reasoning (which I agree with) for my poor experience?
Also, which ROM did you use it with?
Thanks.

I tried it out on mine, saw the same issues you are seeing. Running the last available build of RootBox 4.1.2.
I restored the backup of the previous version I had made with Titanium Backup.
I see there might be a new AOIP 4.2 build soon, which will include overclocking options. I plan to try it on that one when it comes out.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app

I am using it on AOIP I don't have any lag, GPS lock is good, only issue on aoip is that the notification bar flickers sometime and that causes the map to go out of whack, (1out of 10 times) so its manageable

Tweaks
I experimented with different settings to see if I can make Maps work better.
CPU speed doesn't matter - CM10 is overclocked and I experimented with it
16 bit transparency option - doesn't help
Memory management, zRam - this *does* seem to help. It reduces the incidence of flickering. I tried 18% (default) and 26%. 26% seemed to help more.
Clearing up memory - This seemed to help the most. To clear up memory, I did it by menu - manage apps - running.
I will stop messing with it and just try it to see if I like it enough to live with the drawbacks. Perhaps AOIP will help. I'm waiting on the next version. I expect it won't. There is always a small chance that google will make it less memory dependent. Doubtful, though.
We have been very fortunate that we have good 4.1 and 4.1 ROMs for this device. Eventually we knew that our device just wouldn't cut it for some things. Maps may be the first/most prominent.
Thanks for the inputs/feedback. If you have more insights, I'd love to hear them.

Google Maps 7.0.1
I'm having the same problems here. I'm running AOIP 1.0 with the included kernel. I'm getting flickering and corruption. Also, the map display hangs and stops updating my current location after a few minutes, but the voice guidance is still correct. I can swipe the map and then click resume and it goes to the correct location. It doesn't seem like a problem with insufficient RAM to me because I can play music in the background and it works fine. It seems more like an issue with the graphics driver.
I wonder if Google is trying to make use of the fast cpu to gpu copy feature that most newer devices support? I think our current drivers from Qualcomm have a problem with this feature because I've seen similar corruption then using Robert Broglia's emulators that use this feature. Maybe the drivers report that the feature is present, but it is not correctly implemented? Does anybody know if there were ever any Snapdragon/Adreno 205 devices with an official ICS or JB ROM out there that we could borrow their drivers from, or does anybody know if the Snapdragon even supports this feature in hardware?
Here is my ROM and OpenGL info:

Thanks for your thoughts and inputs. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to comment on whether the cpu to gpu feature is supported or not. Maybe someone else can comment. The drivers seem to be available here, though:
https://developer.qualcomm.com/mobi...phics-optimization-adreno/tools-and-resources

Ok, I think this problem is definitely related to the graphics drivers and not the amount of RAM. I installed the new Google Maps on an HTC Inspire 4G that I have and it's having the same problem. The Inspire 4G uses the same snapdragon/Adreno 205 SOC as the Exhibit 4G. I'm running a flavor of JB 4.2.2, and the ROM uses the same version graphics drivers. The main difference between the two is that the Inspire 4G has 768MiB of RAM instead of 512MiB.
I'm going to try creating a Qualcomm login to see if I can download the newer drivers. It looks like the JB.04.01.01.00.036 drivers are dated Aug 2012. The most recent ones are JB_VANILLA.04.02.02.060.053 from April 2013. If the new ones are available as binaries maybe the files can be swapped in the ROM zip file and re-flashed. If it's source only I don't have a build environment setup, nor the time to learn how to do it.

Good luck. I appreciate your efforts.

I tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306286 to update the drivers to JB_VANILLA.04.02.02.060.053 and the phone boots, but the display is blank. I'm running a 3.4 based kernel, but I'm not sure if it meets this requirement
Needs a 3.4 caf kernel on the jb2 branch. Or at least the drivers from it

Team Insomnia had AOIP 1.5 up on their site, but I didn't try it because I don't like changing ROMs alot, and I want to make sure everything works before I flash. So keep an eye out for that. Maybe there will be some kernel updates, and then I'll try this again. Or maybe Google will update Maps.

Where did you see the "Needs a 3.4 caf kernel" info?
BTW, I PM'd one of the developers and he said "We cant use the new qualcom drivers because our kernel doesnt support ion."
I'm not sure what ion is.
[edit]
I found that: ION is a generalized memory manager that Google introduced in the Android 4.0 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) release to address the issue of fragmented memory management interfaces across different Android devices.

Does the end result of all of this mean we can't run Google Maps on our phones, as the chip just isn't powerful enough? Can we downgrade to an older Maps? I really liked this functionality of my old GB phone and would hate to lose it. Thanks.

I don't know the reason why the new Google Maps doesn't run well on the Exhibit. As has been suggested before, it may be a driver/kernel issue. I think the hardware is probably sufficient. It may not be, though.
In any case, you can still run Google Maps 6.14.4. You can find it here: http://www.apk4.net/applications/travel-local/google-maps-6-14-4-apk/
If you want nice traffic rerouting (new feature of Google Maps 7.0x) you can use Waze instead.

You can download it directly to your phone. Then you locate it (in file manager under downloads directory most likely) and click on it and it will ask you if you want to install it. It is pretty simple.

Awesome. Thank you. Waze is ok, except they linked to my FB. I am already running Tinfoil for FB, so they can't track me. This is Waze is counter-productive for that.

Unfortunately, I am having another problem. Maps keeps updating itself to the latest version, which doesn't work. There is no option to disable automatic updates, so how do I make it stop? Thanks.

Open play store then -> settings -> disable auto-update apps

The Google Maps 7.0.2 update from 7/17/13 seems to be working fine now. I tried it yesterday and it was very responsive, and no display corruption.

When trying to download onto my phone from the Market, I get an error message 'Package file was not signed correctly.'
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.5 on my Rogers Magic 32A.
Doesn't work for me in denmark
I think this is only US.
It's been released for the Market on all devices, but I think it has something to do with our devices using test-keys and not release-keys...
Thoughts?
Same problem in Belgium with 32A using CyanogenMod 4.2.5 with Kernel 2.6.29bfs.
Very sad
working fantastic on my MT3G running Dwang 1.13. Didn't get an 'update available' notification, but installing it from the market worked flawlessly. I gotta say, navigation with google layers is freakin' awesome

I have the same phone and ROM version and it updated just fine from the Market. However, I did push the software to my phone, following the instructions here. Not sure if that's why it works without issue.
So i guess its confirmed that this is still US only. BAH
"Some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the "navigate to" voice command as shown in our demo video. However, you can still create a shortcut that will allow you to launch Navigation and start getting directions to a specific place from your current location with just a single touch from your home screen."
Source: http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/11/happy-thanksgiving-travels-google-maps.html
ugh...
If it is US only, why did they not restrict it to the US on the market ? Or maybe that's technically not possible with the current market configuration ?

Or you can search the Market for 'Nav Launcher' and it will enable these features through an external application. Works fine for me.
Same issue on a Mytouch 3G (32B,) in the US and also running Cyanogen 4.2.5.
This is a fresh install of cyanogen as well (literally nothing more than the 1.6 base image and then the cyanogen update.)
I'm also getting the "package not signed" error. Not sure what the problem is. Running CyanogenMod Android 1.6, but I honestly don't remember what version of Cyanogen it is.
This official update no different than the 1.6 hacked Maps w/Navigation that was pulled from the Droid dump.
Even if you can get it installed, you still need to use either Directions shortcuts or the Nav Launcher to get it working outside the US.
I keep getting errors cannont remove / no such file or directory
on cyan 4.2.5 seams like nothing different from 2.0 droid nav
I sure do wish that people stop giving apps 1 start because it doesn't work on cyanogenmod..... these are precisely the people that bring down heat on developers with their crying. God forbid they have to do a search on the net... and, dare I say, read 3 lines of text.
People need to realize we are not flashing official software here, and so we have no right to b*tch if something that's made for official software doesn't work on our hacked ones. There is not one dev here that I can remember who doesn't clearly say that if you break your phone it's your responsibility, not his, or the manufacturers. That's why we have this community here, if you're having problems most members here will help you out however they can because that's what this place is about tweaking our equipment as much as possible and fixing it when we mess up. I would say most people here enjoy helping others out with tech related stuff, I know I do in whatever way possible, but I have no sympathy for those that can't be a$$ed to read a few lines and just want to flash their phones with total disregard of what could happen.
How do you think google feels everytime they see a one star rating on one of their apps, or any other app, that works perfectly fine on official images when the person comments "DIS SUXXORS, IT B NOT WORKING ON C.M 4.2.5"? It's a miracle they didn't crack down on cyanogen much sooner than they did. PLEASE, PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE if you have issues with something you downloaded from XDA or any other site on the net that deals with this kind of stuff, don't go complaining to your mobile carrier, or whoever developed your mobile's official software; come here and ask for help... besides 99% of the time I'm fairly sure that we'll do a much better job of helping than anybody you can contact from your mobile carrier, or official developers. Also, if you brick you're phone be responsible for you're mistake; don't try to be sly and send it in because it's not working to your dev because again this only attracts unnecessary attention to this site. I'm fairly sure that cease & desist that xda received from MS a few years back was due to precisely this.
I've customized windows mobile, palm, symbian, android phones, plus ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, wii, and so far I've never brick anything, or at least not to the point I can't bring it back, so does this mean I'm super lucky? or super smart? Not really, it's quite simple really my secret is this: READ, Read like your equipment depended on it because quite frankly IT DOES.
Sorry for the rant guys, it's not directed at any one of you, but maybe just maybe one of these "people" will find it and correct themselves. I'd actually wish the mods would post something on the main page, but then again who am I kidding the problem originally arises from them not reading in the first place.
I agree.
Also not working on my phone (32a Magic). Currently looking for a work around.
I have searched for:
Google
Google Maps
Google Maps Navigation
Navigation
Etc, Etc, Etc...
and can NOT find this version in the market???
I updated to the latest "Google Maps" from the market, but it does not have the NAV Features.
AHA!
Redownloaded and now get the "Package Not Signed" error as well.

I got tired of running market enabler after every boot This build sets phone to US T-Mobile - you'll see all apps (including pay) for this resolution.
Nice work buddy.
PS. Are you from Canada? Maybe even Toronto?

Vancouver! nice. I'm in Victoria. Love The Hip.
Reuploaded and tested base.
i'm not sure I believe that market enabler actually does anything to the missing market apps for donut and above anymore. why?
1. after booting 320x480, getting full market, then going to 240x320 and using market enabler religiously, after 4-5 days my market still reverts back to having missing apps.
2. after booting a data.img at 240x320, I ran market enabler before entering my google account stuff. missing market apps still missing (paid apps yes, but no pandora, no google listen, no pdanet, no weather channel etc etc).
but i'm willing to be a believer. i'm going to fire this up in 240x320 with a brand spanking new data file and see what rolls. I think we need to find a way to fake resolution to google to avoid missing apps, as the market enabler/t-mobile footprint thing seems to only work for paid apps. waiting to stand corrected though . . . will post back.

This build won't show you the apps for different resolutions - just gives you the full market (as market enabler would) for 320 x 240; I'll have to correct the wording to avoid confusion.

love the build, fast as usual. I see you are feeling lcd.density of 113, I like it. love the animations as well. yeah, to me "full market" means everything - only way to get that, it seems, is booting a fresh data file at 320x480. I should work on a fix for that . . .
absolutely love it! same stable build as last time, updated. With bluetooth and fully functional gps, there is really not much more that I could ask for! For my phone and my use, this build is far and away the fastest out there, very smooth. Everything just fits right on the screen too. Nothing fancy but 100% usable.
Love that you have paid apps enabled by default too.
Tatnai, you figure out how to fix the market / resolution issue and I don't think there is a single thing left we can complain about...as small of an annoyance as it is.
Thanks Plemen! great work as usual
i´ve installed this version to my polaris and it runs very nice and fast. thanks!
just a few things i noticed:
- data connection works
- camera works
- wifi doesn´t work
- market doesn´t work (always getting a server error message)
- coundn´t test bluetooth yet
wifi not working is a big issue for me since i don´t have a data-plan. hope this gets fixed in the future

getting that too. going to try clearing my dalvik cache again and re-installing, I wonder if the new footprint has anything to do with it? if what I'm doing now doesn't work, I may try replacing the build.prop with another footprint, will post back.
EDIT 1: ok, i pulled myns build.prop and dumped it in, google voice works again. I don't know if it is the carrier settings (could be) or maybe the lcd.density (don't think so, unlikely but I guess possible; I know I've used 113 before and I don't recall it causing a problem). I've got to go to bed (my wife's about to kill me) so I can't test anymore. Someone should try google voice with myns build.prop changed to 113, and with plemen's changed to 110. I'll assume that plemen's is going to still force close at 110 cause I think it may be the carrier settings. then we'll need to figure out which setting in particular.

Review & Fixes for [ROM] IncDoes Sense "Desire HD"

My findings and fixes on the Desire HD ROM by IncredibleDoes with fixes maintained as they're collected from the community to help those with issues as well as provide those with information whom might be interested and are "on the fence".
After having run v0.2.1 but unable to get MMS working I decided to wait. While v0.3.0 or v0.3.1 does not fix MMS, there is a procedure that does fix the issue (listed below). I did not have my sdcard formated with an A2SD sd-ext partition and was awaiting IncredibleDroid's completion of v0.3.1 which does not require an sd-ext partition. However, after it was completed, many reported that they had no signal and a few other major issues. I had already backed up my sdcard and created an sd-ext partition but was hoping I could use the non-sd-ext v0.3.1 but with the issues posted regarding the v0.3.1 build, I decided to stick with the original v0.3.1 build that required the sd-ext partitioned sdcard and suggest you do too at this point.
First let me start with a big thanks to IncredibleDoes and a link to his main thread for you to get the latest updates and other information: IncDoes Sense "Desire HD"
Remember, a FULL wipe of data & cache is required.
So if you've skipped this process...start over rather than post any issues you may have.
Device Setup
My device info:
HBOOT v0.92
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
First, some have asked if having their sdcard formatted FAT32 was sd-ext - the answer is no.
Second, if you get the following error message:
Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 (file exists) 3 times, then
Can't mount SDEXT:
Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:ext SDEXT:
Installation aborted
Then you need to create an sd-ext partition.
Creating a sd-ext partition:
I tried to use the SD Partition option in ROM Manager but it did not work. It was suggested by ID to use Amon_RA's recovery image which was actually a very simple process.
NOTE: Unlike many downloads, you will actually need to read & follow the instructions properly. This is an actual .zip archive that you will need to extract the PB31IMG.ZIP image and place on the root of your sdcard, not simply rename it.
Once you boot into the Amon_RA recovery you should create a 512MB sd-ext partition and a 32MB swap file. You will need to select the SD:ext2 to ext3 option, then SD:ext3 to ext4 option to create the properly formatted sd-ext partition.
There is a link posted to an Android and Me article that shows how to do it via a command line but that's by far taking a more difficult approach.
The Amon_RA recovery is quite nice but if you have neen using the ClockworkMod recovery and want to flash back to the ClockworkMod recovery, the PB31IMG.ZIP ClockworkMod image can be found here "http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever" near the very bottom.
My Review
Three second boot:
I find this has been highly over rated. Since the phone is not completely shut down, it is not actually booting up. A restart or battery pull will provide you with the same boot speed that you are used to seeing.
Since the Shutdown option does not actually shut the phone down, people are complaining about having to do battery pulls to get back into HBOOT. While ROM Manager will reboot into Recovery, HBOOT is a different story. The way I have found to do this is to long press on the power button and select Restart. Once the lighted buttons below your screen goes out, press and hold the volume down button to boot into HBOOT.
MMS fix:
Use the provided files by es0tericcha0s but after installing APN Backup & Restore you need to delete the APN settings from the ROM before you restore the provided backup .xml file. This will fix the MMS issue in v0.3.0 (and possibly other build versions if broken).
Credit to es0tericcha0s for the post & files and to pd240 whom pointed out that the APN settings needed to be deleted before you restore the .xml file. Thanks!
Battery life:
In originally writing this yesterday (before the digital gremlins hit XDA), I had made a 1.5hr phone call using BT, downloaded just under 500MB of data over Wi-Fi for the Locations app (more info on that below), sent/received about 30 SMS messages, received about a half dozen e-mails, browsed the Web for awhile, watched a couple YouTube videos, streamed music over Y! Music & Slacker to test (but not for very long) and had GPS on for a bit. While I've seen several people complain of battery use, I did not see poor battery issues and was quite surprised since the 500MB download itself took well over an hour.
Call screen & Phone:
While broken in v0.2.1, as stated in the ROM's OP, these work 100% as expected in v0.3.0. Tone sounds for voicemail etc. work properly...all issues in this area are fixed. I believe that I read there were some issues with v0.3.1 however but I am not sure as I don't recommend that version anyway.
Camera & Camcorder:
Still broken as ID's OP states however it is different in v0.3.0 than it was in v0.2.1. In v0.2.1 the app would launch then quit back to Sense. In v0.3.0 it launches to a black screen and does not quit back to Sense and the back button does nothing. After pressing the Home button I used Astro's Tools to kill the Camera process and have since not futzed with the camera.
Chrome to Phone:
With many ROM's I have had trouble getting this to work and this was no exception. I figured out last nigh that even though I had played the Disconnect, uninstall, reinstall C2P game over & over without any success as well as logging out and back in with the extension in Chrome (Mac version) I had finally found the issue. Once I uninstalled the Chrome C2P extension, restarted Chrome and reinstalled the C2P extension and logged back in via Chrome, my phone was flooded with link notifications! All along I thought it was a device issue.
Date format:
I've seen people asking if the Calendar app states the actual day in the Agenda & Day views rather than just the date. The answer reported was no. This is not entirely correct. The date format set in the System Settings is a global setting. Whatever you choose is used for the lock screen, notification bar, clock widget as well as the Calendar app. Kind of odd but there you go!
Notifications:
With all of the ROM's I've run, none (even the 2.2 OTA) provided proper SMS, FeedR etc. "unread" counts. This new version of Sense does which is nice.
Also, for those not aware, recen apps are now listed along the top of the notifications panel in a sliding ribbon once dropped down. Could be useful if you remember that they're there.
Connected Media:
This is a cool central hub for the media (music, photos & videos) on you device as well as that which is "connected" to your device (e.g., via your Wi-Fi connection). In v0.2.1 this worked very well and was the only media app I used since it launches the required Gallery, Music & Video's apps as needed. Something cool I noticed is that it saw my DirecTV HD receiver. Now, there was nothing it was able to play on it but it makes me wonder if one had Hulu or Netflix setup through an Xbox 360 or Windows box, could it possibly stream that content? I don't have any of that setup to test but kind of looks promising.
UPDATE 9/26
via dgourd
Just to help clarify:
This is a DLNA addition to the phone, so it can basically communicate with any other DLNA device. I can confirm that it works since I have a Windows Home Server in my house which supports DLNA. My Incredible can find all my music and videos. It will only display files it supports though. For example, it can play all my mp3 songs and mp4 videos, put my mkv videos are unplayable since it is not natively supported.
Click to collapse
Unfortunately, there are some things that work differently in v0.3.0 with the Connected Media app. The photos aren't able to view full screen without first looking at a photo that was in a linked Facebook album. Once a photo was looked at in a Facebook album, photos on my device would display when the thumbnail was tapped. However, quitting the app would force you to go through the same steps again (this applied to videos too).
In addition, if there wasn't an sdcard installed, the app cannot see any media even if it's stored within the device itself. I do not know if this applies to the individual apps themselves (too lazy to bother at this point).
HTC Hub:
This is a cool idea from HTC that with an HTCSense.com account allows you to preview and download many items for your device. Everything from Skins (themes), Widgets, single Sounds and even full Sound Sets that you can listen to before you bother to download them. Pretty nice.
HTC Likes:
Access to apps that other HTCSense.com users can comment as well as "Like" (think of Facebook's "Like" button). There are recommended apps as well and this should rally take off once HTCSense.com launches!
Locations:
While I have no use for it, people were asking about this app so I gave it a shot. As I launched the app it wanted to download maps before it would work. The maps it wanted were just under 500MB (as stated above). After downloading the maps, there were several categories displayed as one would expect (gas stations, restaurants etc.) but selecting these provided a "no locations found" message then prompted to tell me that I needed to download updated maps (WTF?). The maps for the Western U.S. were over 800MB and I did not bother so I cannot go any further with how this app works...sorry.
Market:
I think it was a CM6 ROM I had installed that asked if I wanted Google to keep track of my data & settings that I answered yes to. This new ROM does the same and something nice was that after installing the ROM, all of my apps were automatically downloaded for me. Very nice! Now, since I had installed v0.2.1, I had already setup my System Settings, these too were restored during the v0.3.0 ROM install (but not any app settings).
The Verizon tab is replaced with a "Downloads" tab and many Verizon apps are not available for download (NFL couldn't be found, nor Skype, My Verizon etc.). Kind of a bummer for some.
Quick Lookup:
This is a cool app that will lookup what you've typed in the search box. Sure, sounds boring but, you select from where it searches from the ribbon at the bottom. Your choices are: Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, Translate and Google Dictionary.
Quadrant:
For those interested in Quadrant scores...first run 1108 second run 1168.
Streaming Audio:
As mentioned above, both Y! Music and Slacker streamed just fine through the external speaker. I was told that Slacker sounded tinny using headsets but I did not confirm this.
Web Browser:
Looks a bit more polished. Using Wi-Fi YouTube videos played smoothly (unlike the YouTube app below). There's a new checkbox setting for animated .gif files which is unchecked (off) by default. I did notice in the 2.2 OTA that animated .gif's do play now, I guess this simply lets you choose to turn them on or off for speed. If you pinch the window down, it gets displayed just as though you selected Windows from the Menu button which is handy if you're in the habit of using multiple windows (which I'm not).
YouTube:
The YouTube app is broken in so far as you cannot log into your account. When you try, after selecting your account from the popup, the app just sits there and you're unable to do anything without hitting the back button. I tried this both over 3G and Wi-Fi with the same results. Also, when choosing an HQ video from my YouTube Favorites from the main site it was very choppy & not worth watching (unlike in the browser above but that was at 360 not HD). None the less, the Gymkhana THREE Part 2 video that's at the top of the YouTube app currently plays just fine in HD so other than the inability to login, I'm confused why some HD plays and others do not (but do on the 2.2 OTA).
Well, there you have it. After a second write-up (now over 8 hours of time spent) I hope this is of some use to the community. Since it was suggested I create a thread for this so that the information did not get lost in the main ROM thread I think it will be useful. If there's something other than trying different kernels or over-clocking that you would like me to try & add, please let me know. I will keep this updated as best as possible.

i had a weird issue, one specific to this rom, and it ended up being the deal breaker for me
i have a california phone number, but recently moved to the midwest. on EVERY other rom ive used, across two different phones, this hasnt caused an issue, my messages and clls all read the right time. however on this one, my recieved texts messages were reading as california time. since the messaging app uses conversation style messaging, i would have to scroll up through two hours of my texts to find a text that i just recieved.
it was insanely annoying. that coupled with the camera killed it for me. i dont use the camera much, but the two in conjunction were just too much.
i tried pushing the old htc messaging app and using that, but no cigar.
the verizon tab issue can be fixed easily with some build.prop mods btw. im not familiar enough with the INC yet to give you the changes off the top of my head, but with the eris, the issue was solved by editing the ro.product.name and ro.product.device i believe
Just need camera to work and it will be perfect! Already is the best Rom for me

I wonder if doing a *228 option 2 would help by setting the proper local tower info for your phone? Have you tried this? I know ID said this was a GSM ROM which confuses me that it works at all (at least from my BB days) but I guess it's quite an apples & oranges comparison for Android OS to BB OS.

i didnt even think to try that, it may work. ill have to give it a shot later. thanks
I just wanted to say thank you for writing this review. It is a process to go create a EXT4 partition on an SDCard so I have been hesitant. This is well written and I really hope you take it upon yourself to write more reviews about new roms in the future. I think I might have to check out the next version of this Desire HD rom when he releases it. I can't wait for this to officially show up on our Incredibles in the future and get optimized to our liking by some of these guys.

Thanks!
The partitioning after reading the command line process was a no go for me. While I would have no trouble doing it, it was just too much work. The fact that ROM Manager was failing was a bummer too but the steps I took were very simple. Being that I had 10GB on my 32GB sdcard was the most time consuming portion (about 20 minutes to back it up from an adapter & an hour to re-write the data). Partitioning was/is pretty easy.
Also, now that the ROM is in ROM Manager, that should be helpful too (even though it's a tad under 200MB).

I wasn't taken to a premium option, just a simple menu selection of map locations (World wide). Being basically homebound, an additional 800MB+ was just kind of silly.

[ROM][P75XX/TMobile][Oct28]Cyanogenmod 10.2

I'll summarize the standard disclaimer: By downloading, you accept any and all outcomes no matter how strange.
Big thank you to forum member epinter for getting early builds to work. The CM has already integrated a patch like his.
DO NOT USE OLDER A1 KERNELS: They don't have SELinux support. The included kernel is really just V1.9 with SELinux turned on. It has all the same features that the A1 kernel normally provides.

I am no pershoot or other highly talented developer. It is very unlikely I can make any major bug fix if major bugs are found. For example: I have no hdmi (or HD) TV at my house so if that doesn't work, you're SOL. I test features that I use and that I find important. If there is an issue that deals with hardware I don't have (various bluetooth accessories for example) there is no way I can fix it since I won't be able to get a logcat and I'm not that great at intepreting logcats. Getting CM10.2 working on this tablet was very much a trial and error process involving mostly error.
ROM Name Trivia

Since my kernel is named A1, after a childhood fantasy character my brother made up, I figured it would be fitting to name the ROM after A1's home world. A1 was head of the Diamond Cave world and the leader of the Diamond Force so I named the ROM after his world. That is his original 2001 hand drawn logo in my signature that I touched up in gimp.

-(if coming from stock recovery) Look up my A1 kernel thread and download the appropriate TWRP recovery for your model, and look up the dd method of flashing. Hint: the A1 kernel thread is linked in my signature. TMobile variant use pershoot cwm.
-Download gapps and the cm10.2 zip.
-Put on some (good) music.
-Boot into recovery.
-Do a data wipe/factory reset. (Only for the first cm10.2 install. Not required for subsequent CM10.2 builds)
-Flash Cm10.2 and then gapps (Only flash gapps the first time)
-Reboot

Oh yeah, one last thing. In terms of source, I wrote out how I patched the CM10.2 source to make this rom and what those patches do. I thought that would be more informative rather than just throw in a bunch of edited files with their original locations.
So I have a use for reserving the second post
FAQ
1: I have no root even though I changed the superuser settings.
A: Go into about tablet and keep clicking "build number" until developer options appear. Change the settings in there.
2: Titanium backup fails to restore.
A: Set the backup folder location to be /storage/emulated/legacy/... instead of /storage/emulated/0...
3: The UI looks like honeycomb.
A: It's supposed to. I like the old honeycomb UI.
--> 3b: Is it possible to get the phablet ui?
A: No. The UI mode is hardcoded directly into the source. Making a flashable zip every time would be annoying. Also, the old UI produces a much smoother experience.
--> 3c: What would it take to make the phablet ui smooth?
A: The only solution that I know works is disabling the screenshot feature but that seems like quite a huge loss.
4: I get notifications for other users when using multi user.
A: It's a side effect of forcing the honeycomb ui. Multiuser was added in android 4.2 which is when the honeycomb ui was discontinued so it's likely that some bits are missing.
5: Focal won't change resolutions or is laggy
A: It's a focal bug. I'm not good enough to edit focal to fix it.
6: Is a Verizon variant coming?
A: No. It takes 3 hours to make the initial build and then 30-45 minutes each subsequent time. Also, it takes 20 minutes to upload each rom.
7: ADW drawer icons/start menu icons look pixelated
A: Use another launcher like nova. That one seems to work.
8: Some kind of text to speech engine crashes when launching google maps
A: Unfortunately it does. Change the text to speech settings to use pico in Settings.
9: Google Now crashes
A: Please see the workaround by pitpit24
10: 3G Mobile mobile data doesn't work
A: Please see the suggested fix by member John Kester
11: Will this ROM work for the German P75X1 variants?
A: Yes. The only difference between the German and international variants is that some features are missing from Samsung's stock rom. The hardware is the same. Blame this on apple for sue happy.
This is seriously awesome man. Really appreciated, nice job!

This is awesome Aaccount! It runs extremely smooth on the tablet, big thanks to you guy!
Edit: let's make some evaluation of this ROM:
I installed the ROM along With A1 kernel and twrp, i had no complications at all, except for the Gapps which gave me an error on first attempt.
complications?
My first start on android 4.3 started with ALOT of crashes of the system, launcher, tekst to speek engine,... After several reboots everything works okay. Exception for the web browser, when i'm surfing arround and when i want to write something on a website (like a status update on facebook) the keyboard crashes, even when i install google keyboard apk.
is this ROM really buttery smooth?
Yes, it runs very smooth with animations turned on, it's a faster experience then 4.2.2.
would i recommed this ROM to other poeple over 4.0 or 4.2 on the galaxy tab 10.1?
YES!
video playback?
No or minor stuttering noticed
bugs?
When i longpress the recent apps button, my touchscreen doesn't react anymore, fix by reboot or lock/unlock screen
root?
Root access lost on 4.3, you need to manually re-root
Awesome!!! It is just installing...let's see

No complaints at all. I think I like it more than 4.2.2.
Seems to run quiet well. Thanks!!!
Only thing is the tablet ui that looks a bit ics?-ish and misses qs tiles. It also shows emails arriving on other users mail inbox. Is there an option somewhere to go back for the moment to phabletui? Don't want my wife to get my mail notifications

Strange, was coming from latest cm10.1 and only wiped caches and system. Then I flashed ROM and gapps flawlessly. Booted up without any issues or error message. Also root is working fine after setting root to apps and adb in dev settings
I also noticed the recent apps thing. But only once so far.
Thanks for this awesome rom!!! It's really smooth and I have found no major issues so far
Please add an option to use the "normal" UI instead of the tablet UI, that would be great! Also I noticed that the recent apps animation is "wrong", maybe becuase of the Tablet UI?
By the way, Aacount how did you learn to build roms, modify kernels and stuff like this? Thats really great!
Thanks,
Regards Fleckdalm

What do you mean by re-rooting? Isn't it enough to allow root access to apps+adb under developer options?

I believe this rom is for the P7510 which is wifi only.
Very nice of you to make this build AND to make such a useful guide on how to build this yourself. Was finding my way, but the last few issues were easy to solve with your guide

Is the a1 kernel 1.9 not compatible with cm 10.2? When I search all I see is says the cm version is for 10.1 only.
Also I don't see any versions for wifi. When I look through tab 10.1 development I don't see a a1 kernel listing anymore. Or did I not look far enough
Can I use the version I'm on now 1.8.4 on cm10.2?
Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm kinda confused here .
nvm reread the op and i missed the part where the it said 3g works on wifi. my bad
I think I've caught up on reading the thread.
As for the phablet ui, I can't make a toggle to go back and forth between since those variables are hard coded. If I was any better I would add an option to the system settings which would let you choose. Since I personally don't like the new UI, it was actually one of my goals that the rom be released with the old ICS/honeycomb style UI. It looks like kasper_h and djmatt604 are going to be making their customized versions so I would wait for them to come out with the phablet ui. Since the old honeycomb ui was discontinued in android 4.2 and that's when multi user came out, I can imagine that there would be some shortcomings in using the old ui since the code is likely not updated. AOKP had a way of doing it but that solution was written by a team of talented developers and I am just a single enthusiast.
@shawnwojcik
The new selinux A1 kernel is included with the rom. You don't have to worry about that. In all honesty, I haven't tried flashing an older A1 kernel without selinux support to see what happens. However, there is no point in doing so since the included kernel is exactly the same as the latest V1.9 but just has selinux turned on. There is no loss of features.
@arizal
I can't make any guarantees that it'll work properly since mine is wifi only but...
And just a survey: how many of you guys use the tmobile variant or know somebody who does and actually does flashing?
I really don't like the old tabletui but it's your ROM and your choice. Thanks for this great ROM!!!
Gonna try this this weekend. *excited*

Question Why so many good features have to be installed from Galaxy Store?

I just do not get it, there are so much good things in software but why for gods sake they have to be installed from galaxy labs? I have the phone for couple of months, just now discovered that we have something like sound assistant, keys cafe and many more. Why Samsung can't just add those features into the build?
Others are complaining Sammy puts in too much.... Now the choice is yours whether or not to install!
People complain about apps and the inability to remove them.
goodlock and stuff are just features in the sense some of them could just be implemented in the core features of the OS.
for example I just use Keys Cafe to remove the WWW option from the samsung keyboard as its annoying because it makes the space bar smaller and end up hitting the dot everytime.

That's my point, all of those features should be available in OS natively. Such a stupid thing, when we have submenu for lets say Keyboard and we have to install additional application to add just 4 options, same thing with sound. Full submenu, but things like Bluetooth delay etc must be added by additional application. It just doesn't make sense, even if they are "afraid" that some people may "brake" the phone, just add something like advanced options and put all of those features there, and they could be even turned on/off by flipping single button in options.
1. Power users dislike bloat and what you are wishing for will translate to bloat or unneeded features for people who do not use it or need it. TouchWiz all over again.
2. Apps used to be included into the ROM update which caused delays for bug fixes and new features being available to users so updates are faster via the app stores
3. You don't need to use the Galaxy Store if you don't want to. All Samsung apks are a search away on apkmirror.com. They can also auto update if you install their app
I ask why "Good Lock" is not available in my country?
Why only in USA?

Don't know what your country is, but Good Lock is available in Galaxy Store in Europe too, for sure in The Netherlands. Check Galaxy store not Play Store.

You do not get the point. Most of those functions should be built into ROM. Not as apps, even I didn't know that some of them exist...
Also blending them into rom will not make it sluggish, not sure where did you get this from but you are wrong

He is right.
You have the choice to install it if you want to.
For the ones who do not, they don't have anything to do.
It's better and easier this way around.
For example, the only add-on I use is One Hand Operation, so I'm not gonna be glad if I find 200 other options and don't know how to turn them off.

I have to install all of them and now what? Many people do not even know that such things exist. Still not understound how lack of function can be better, even if they add them you still can use only the ones you want...

That's a lot of functionalities that could be bugged, use resources, be turned on... etc...
This is not a lack if you can install them.
I understand your point but you have to understand that Samsung's are designed for everyone, not power users.
Those people do not want options, they just want a working phone out of the box. They can be lost if they have too many thing to understand.
So if you want more, you can, that's all you need to know.

Wellness for me your arguments make 0 sense as you miss one basic thing which I mentioned twierdzi. People do not know that such things exist! Also thats why we have Beta tests so they can fix bugs. But nice 1200usd Phone and we must install additional functions form the stare, where we do not even know ghat they exist. On top of that, 90% of those functions existed 10 years ago in Cyanogenmod mod made by amateurs during free time...

Once again, I don't know why you are complaining.
You know that they exist, so install every module you want and that's it.
You want a system where everything is already there, but maybe some are not okay with that.

1. I am complaining as those options should be melt into system by default, there is nothing preventing them from doing it.
2. I know NOW, but terenie was no info anywhere that such options can be added so plenty of people do not know about them.
3. I would like to know why they do not want them by default. Lets say I do not want AoD build info rom. Can we have it removed and have it available as app in galaxy stare? Seriously think, if you have an option YOU DO NOT have to use it, so how someone might say "I do not want to have optional thing in my phone", what a strange logic or lack of it.

It's probably to reduce space as not everyone is going to use all the goodlock modules. If they were built into the system users would be angry at the fact they are taking up storage and resources when it's much better to have the goodlock app and choose what you want.

100mb more when phones have 128GB+ and Rom itself is 4gb? There are so many bloatware apps which cannot be uninstalled and you think it is to save the space lol? Heh that make so much sense.
adamlee2012 said:
Exactly, there's already so many bloatware apps so why add more by adding goodlock and all its modules.

But they would not be an bloatware but rather system functions. I się noone complain a about and, Dolby etc
What if Samsung would put a list of those apps with a short description both in the User manual and one app on the desktop to control installing the extras.
