[Q] How to update to 1.08? RUU won't work. - HTC First

I already rooted my First on 1.05 and want to update to 1.08 since I want to go S-OFF and I saw in that thread it's for 1.08.
I tried the RUU dozens of times on 2 completely different Windows 7 x64 PCs. It sat at the Sending...... step for awhile with the phone on an HTC logo screen, and then ended in Error 155. I also tried booting into FASTBOOT USB and trying it. Same thing. Has anyone got the RUU to work? If so, what's your MD5 hash? Mine is 425MB and I would think it's a good copy since it was able to extract itself into Appdata\Local\Temp folder with no errors.
I saw in the RUU thread there's also just the OTA .zip. It won't install with TWRP. I'd have to flash to stock recovery to install it, but I couldn't find any place to get the stock recovery.
Any solutions?

I have a related problem, after bricking the phone I flashed the RUU and I cannot re unlock the bl again, anyway try to flash cwm instead of twrp and then retry with the Ota.zip. I don't know if this can solve your problem, but I've noticed that with twrp some roms did not work to me. I think also that the RUU does not work with unlocked bl, so you have first to relock, but if you do this you could have the same problem I have, that is you can't re unlock the bl... I am not an expert so I cannot assure you that these procedures are ok...

Thanks, that was the problem; I had to relock the bootloader and then the RUU worked. I was able to re-unlock the bootloader with no problems though. I used the All-In-One kit to do it and reused the Unlock_code.bin that I used on 1.05.

I must be blind, I swear I looked for flashable zips but couldn't find them. Too late since I already flashed the RUU, but hopefully that will help someone else who runs into this issue.

So the kornklown69 theory that also mine is correct, is S-OFF the problem. To re-unlock probably the phone must be S-ON.
So the procedure could be: Relock -> S-ON -> Re-unlock -> S-OFF.
But I don't understand how to obtain S-ON again.
Anyway my phone is Relocked and I can install custom roms, kernels and root it... Very strange!

That makes sense. With my original Droid Incredible, an S-OFF hack came out before HTC official BL unlocking and there was never any reason to unlock it since S-OFF was all you needed to install custom ROMs and root. So if you're S-OFF, there's probably no need to re-unlock it.

Having the same issue. In another thread, jmz said:
In my stock Rom thread there are new files up. They are the ota roms. So if you are running stock, download the odex one ending in 1.08 and flash in recovery, no need to wipe data. Then pull boot.img and fastboot flash it. You now have the ota software. I will post instructions to upgrade the firmware that came with the ota

I know what the odexed rom is, but can someone explain how to get the boot.img and fastboot flash it? Or should I just relock the bootloader?

[Q] Update to ICS from rooted phone

I have my HTC Vivid rooted and on HoliRaider v1.6. I really wanted to use the rom Rum Float Beta, which is ics. I tried to find the steps for updating to this but i get kinda confused... If anyone could help me that would be great!
Taken from a similar thread...........
the RUU or the methods that thecubed and i have laid out will get you the necessary HBOOT/RADIO/etc that you will need to flash a custom ICS rom
either method will get you the same thing....an updated HBOOT and ICS
if you run the bootloader unlock tool from htcdev, YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SETTINGS! it will wipe the device like its brand new......do NOT include this in your dreams of getting backups prior to flashing a custom rom....
please just read through the posts and understand what is going on.
in order for ICS to happen on your vivid you need the new HBOOT, Radio, and various other components that the RUU/PH39IMG contain
there are 3 different roads you can follow to get there, the EASIEST being just run the RUU (WHICH WILL ALSO WIPE SETTINGS!), afterwards, reboot to bootloader, unlock bootloader, reboot to fastboot, fastboot flash the boot.img and the recovery.img of your choice on (limited on boot.img's at the moment, better use the one from the rom), reboot to recovery and flash the rom
the other methods imply you understand somewhat how the process works.
relock bootloader (if unlocked), run PH39IMG install, unlock bootloader, fastboot flash recovery and boot.img, reboot to recovery and flash rom.....
if you wrap your head around HOW it works, its all really simple....so the first step is understanding HOW it works, not blindly following some tutorial or walkthrough.
please try to LEARN and UNDERSTAND what it is you are doing....
The thing that is getting me is how I have to Lock the bootloader again. Do I just lock it through the htc unlock tool? How do I " run PH39IMG install"? After, do i follow the same steps that i did before to root my phone?
To relock bootloader:
fastboot oem lock
To Unlock bootloader:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
The PH39IMG file needs to be on the root of your SD card. Boot into hboot and it will automatically find the the PH39IMG file and update. I hope this helps. Like you said it's almost exact same steps you did to root assuming you didn't use the supertool or one click method.

Fastboot OEM lock. This is done from the fastboot screen. This is covered in the superguide and mentioned several times throughout these forums.

Before you start are you savvy with fastboot commands? I'm confident you can do this but just read read read. I'll answer your questions as best as I can. I"m not a dev or anything but I was able to do this following the steps created by PG and Thecubed.
i've tip toed around with it. Back when i had my evo 4g. I'm pretty familiar with the commands and stuff. i think i got a pretty good idea with the superguide also. after the getting the img file on and cwm i'm decent at the whole flash thing. If i can just get past that point i think im good.

Yes keep the superguide thread open as well. It's a great resource to have while you are doing this. The steps are nearly the same just have to update the HBOOT first. Good luck! I look forward to seeing you post having a successful install.

[Q] Please help me

I cannot find an answer to my problem as hard as i look. today, i decided to root my phone (HTC vivid). I rooted it successfully, i went to the Superuser and it said it needed to be updated and to flash a kernel or something like that. (i was using this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003) I went to the program that i meantioned above and i clicked flash stock vivid kernel, thinking that this was the kernel i had to update or flash or whatever then my phone reboots and its all like Hurr duur im stuck on the HTC screen watcha gonna do about it. I tried many things:
One thing i tried was to do the .zip thingy, with the boot loader relocked, and it wont boot to anything else but the boot loader
i tried also to do the ruu thing, but it kept giving me errors about my phone model or something like that
Can someone please tell me what i did wrong and how to fix it?
i would really appreciate it big time!
Edit: i have an micro sd, if that info helps
I would try to restore it back to stock.
Relock to bootloader if it isn't still locked.
Then run the stock ruu for your phone from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338919
I had my vivid stuck on the HTC screen and this worked for mine.
Also, If you rooted to ICS you are most likely stuck until the official RUU from HTC is out...

You need to install HTC sync or the htcdrivers before running the ruu otherwise it won't see your phone and will just error out.

1. You obviously didn't know what you were doing. Lessons for next time.
2. If the .zip thingy made the bootloader update and it seems like it managed to flash everything alright, then you need to make sure the zip isn't on any storage connected to the phone, then go from bootloader to fastboot, unlock the bootloader using the HTCDev bootloader unlock procedure (I hope you kept your unlock_code.bin!), then fastboot flash a recovery.img, then boot to recovery from the bootloader, and flash an ICS ROM, then go back to fastboot and flash the boot.img to get the kernel flashed.
I'm guessing that you may have flashed the ICS bootloaders, but you aren't specific enough. What ruu did you try to run, exactly what zip did you try to install?
You didn't do anything wrong, you just didn't complete the procedure.

Well I hope that was a given. BUt I guess I should have listed it. Good point!
If you have an AT&T Vivid, then you should be okay, run the latest ICS RUU and hope for the best. If not, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way through lots of fastboot commands.
thank you everyone!

[Q] Stuck on black screen after updating

So the other day I got the update for 4.25.654.14 but found out I couldn't update without relocking my bootloader and reinstalling the stock recovery since I'm S-On. Today I got to reinstalling stock recovery but I forgot to relock the bootloader before installing the update and now I'm stuck on a black screen after the initial HTC splash screen. I was able to get back into bootloader and relock the bootloader, but that didn't do anything. Anyone know how to fix this?

The RUU contains the whole software(including firmware and ROM) so it should work, but it MAY wipe the whole SD (most of the time it does), so backup everything on a computer. You will need the proper RUU file and a re-locked bootloader ONLY if S-ON.

You can run a RUU but doing so will wipe your internal storage so make sure you back it up to your computer first. Also, if S-on you will need to re-lock your bootloader using the command fastboot oem lock prior to running the RUU.

HTC One M8 With TWRP: Trouble With ROMs

Huge amount of frustration with trying to deal with my phone
I soft bricked my HTC One M8 HK not too long ago, and had left it sitting in the dust for a while as I had no options of fixing it because I wiped the memory on accident (how I did, I don't know. Guess I'm dumb. That's not the point though). It's been sitting on my dresser for about 2 months being unused as I had no microSD cards in hand. All it had was an unlocked bootloader and working TWRP.
As of right now, I've tried to install 4 ROMs. All 4 did not work. I followed the instructions and unlocked my bootloader and did all other essential things. I installed ViperOneM8 before being ignorant that my WiFi wouldn't work. It was the only ROM I installed that actually booted properly. The only issue was that I had no WiFi. Had it worked, I wouldn't be making this thread. Then I got Android Revolution HD, installed it and it installed properly. I booted it into system, and it brought me to bootloader. This was the same issue I had while trying to install my first ROM, and still happens. Then I got CyanogenMod, and it didn't even install. TWRP told me it failed right off the bat. Same thing with whenever I tried to install a stock firmware recovery of the variant I have, HK Sprint.
Right now, I'm getting the 4.2.5 HK RUU in hopes that it works. I tried it previously, and it was a literal waste of time. I've been here for 5 hours trying different ROMs and to no success. I was very faithful I would get to use my phone again, although unless this RUU actually works, I don't have a lot of positive faith for my phone.
Are there any fixes for getting something like CyanogenMod to work? I actually really wanted this ROM after I remembered it, and was quite let down after it failed to work. Also, is there anything I should do with the phone before I go farther with anything?
Thanks for any help you all can give, I would greatly appreciate it. Sucks not having a phone, so I'll take any help I can get. Thanks once again!
EDIT: The RUU did not work. It failed to update. Waiting for answers I guess..

Flashing RUU requires locked bootloader.
Alright, I'm seriously about to just throw this thing in the dumpster. I've been here another 2 hours trying to get Cyanogen to work, and I figured out the issue with it. The updater script file wasn't accepting m8_whl. I'm still unaware how in the Mod Edit I'm supposed to put m8_whl into the script for it to be accepted.
To be more specific, the actual updater script has m8whl, while my phone recognizes as m8_whl. It denies it.
I thought I put it into the script correctly, although it is not accepting it. I found a quote not saying the location, and I assumed in the latest release of Cyanogen 12 for M8s, it was in /META-INF/google/android/updater-script
Please, someone help me before I have an anger episode. This thing has literally wasted my whole Mod Edit day.

Don't toss it, it's still worth something, even if not to you. But as @popthosegaskets said, you need to relock the bootloader to flash the RUU. If it's been sitting for awhile, what version of firmware and hboot was it on prior to not working? Perhaps the issue is that it's older, also try flashing the newest version of TWRP if you still want to install a custom OS.
If you want to RUU, just use the fastboot command "fastboot oem lock" while in fastboot and then run the RUU. I think it reboots after locking.

[Mod hat on] I know it can be frustrating at times but please take it easy with the swearing. [/Mod hat off]
You might try flashing the Full firmware that matches the RUU that you are trying to flash, the past couple updates require hboots to match on both your device and the RUU or you will get an error.

My apologies for the swearing, was angry at the time.
Also, my hboot version seems to be 3.18. Not sure what to do in order to be able to flash firmware. My OS version seems to be 2.16.651.4 as well if that helps.
What would I have to do in order to install a ROM and how?
If you are not flashing the full firmware to begin with, that's the issue. From your OP it looks like you only have an unlocked BL and had TWRP.
You must relock the BL and then run the full RUU, you can get it in the thread here, or get it from HTC. Either way you need the full one, it flashes the FW and Software as well as bootloader and radios.

Are you S-Off or On? If you are running the *.651* then that's the non HK version. It's ok if you flashed a modified stock, but if you got that from an RUU, that would be what the issue is. I think

Ok re-lock your bootloader if you have not already.
Flash this for Non HK 4.25.651.18 Full Firmware
Flash this for HK 4.25.654.18 Full Firmware
Instructions:
-rename firmware to firmware.zip
-copy firmware.zip to your sdk folder
-boot into bootloader
-plug in usb
-select fastboot option (screen should say fastboot usb)
-type fastboot oem rebootRUU
-when u see the black screen w/ HTC, type fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
-when it's done, type fastboot reboot
Once done flash the latest Non HK or HK RUU found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
Then unlock your bootloader again using the unlock code you got from HTC.
Re-flash the latest TWRP found here... https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
This will give you a fresh start then you can try to flash the rom you want.

If you have a platform-tools you can use that or use the folder attached.
Unzip it and copy the files to a folder.

Alright, I did it all, but it doesn't seem to be changing once I send over the zip. Is it meant to take a while or is there something wrong?
EDIT: 20 minutes later and still at the sending. Something probably went wrong.
EDIT 2: 30 minutes later, still sending.

Quick noob question on RUUexe

Hey guy
So i need to update firmware currently on 1.32.531.33 on my t mobile htc one m9 s-on. I was gonna use ruu.exe from herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-one-m9/general/please-read-rooting-using-twrp-t3069022. To my understading this will unroot and flash stock rom and i will be able update via OTA. Am I suppose to use the 1.32.531.33exe or 2.7.531.6exe(since on trying to update it)? Do I need to be s-off to use? Will this relock my bootloader? Is there any other changes in adb I need to make. Anything else I should be on the lookout for? Planning on rerooting after update. I couldnt find a guide with this info so any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

If you are looking to upgrade to the latest 2.11.531.19, you can get the RUU here.
You do not need to S-Off unless you plan on flashing older or intl firmware, Ruu will not relock the bootloader.
keep in mind, running RUU will completely wipe the phone, so Backup.
I would
1. Run latest RUU let it boot and set up.
2. Reboot to bootloader, flash Twrp (fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-hima.img)
3. Reboot to recovery and flash SuperSU here.
Unless you are going to flash roms then you only need to flash the firmware and twrp and rom
You can get the firmware in my thread here
Hope this helps

Thanks! I took a chance yesterday and ran the 1.32.531.33.exe to play it safe and updated via OTA to 2.7.531.6. But for future reference is it's okay to run RUUs that are above current firmware or do you have to use the one your current firmware matches (for instance running 2.7.531.6.exe when the device firmware is on 1.32.531.33). Also will roms running on older firmware work if device firmware is on 2.11.531.19?

With S-on you can only use current of newer firmware.
They might, depends the roms base.
Hey guys,
I just got HTC ONE M9 T-Mobile version. I'm trying to unlock it. Saw a bunch of stuff online and keep trying everything what is out there. Tried to unlock it from htcdev but it says token is too long. I copied it multiple times the way it was described, still nothing happened. Copied it piece by piece, typed it... nothing worked same thing. Questions is this, I can't get it to root, unlock bootloader, s-off or any of that so what's going to happen if I install a RUU which is rooted so at least I'll have a start cause now I can't do ANYTHING. Whatever ideas you have, please let me know.
I tried htcdev, sunshine, kingroot, kingoroot, supersu, root apps.... nothing. The tmobile unlock app, no chance... Thanks

I'm still an amateur myself but here is my understanding and recommendations.
RUU will update firmware and flash stock rom basically bringing you back to square one. You should be able to use it with a locked bootloader. If you can't do anything with the phone I would suggest to to use RUU dot exe of the latest firmware and update all OTAs. I used a video guide on youtube by "sakitech" when I rooted mine. Just search "root HTC One m9" it should be the first link. Make sure you're copying no more no less than your token ID. Hope this helps
You're way ahead of yourself, RUU is not rooted. It's a completely stock system. Like if you were to buy a brand new phone. It will wipe your phone completely too, nothing on sdcard.

Thank you very much for responding.
