Possible to block IP from Kindle? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I currently have a friend who is somewhere in the middle east doing something (if you've ever been in the military you'll understand) and she recently purchased Amazon Prime not knowing it was only usable in the US and very few select countries. The issue I am running into is she's using wifi since she's on her Kindle and the p2p guards I know of don't work with wifi so I am hoping someone here in the xda community has an answer for me.

If your asking what I think your asking, its basically how can I use amazon prime videos and not be in the USA? If so I have never tried this to see if it works and I can't now that I'm on cm without reflashing, but I think if she proxies through a USA server it may work, don't know the militaries stance on you proxying though. Its completely legal to do but just like at school or at work they tend to get mad if u go through a proxy because it can bypass their firewall for website blocking and such. I think the kindle has the option to set a proxy but I prefer using proxy droid because I can save a list of proxies I use. You need root access to use it though. Once u have that u would just need a USA proxy server off the internet. Idk if this would work, but if they only check your country based off your IP then I would think it would work. Note when proxying your bandwidth will go down usually, the further from the server the more the bandwidth will suck. By the way what did you mean by p2p guards? I know p2p usually is involved in torrenting, so if your suggesting anything about torrenting be very careful, its bounds for getting banned I think if u mention much more than that.

IMPORTANT in regards to wireless tethering.

I was an avid user of wireless tether but please do not use it while still running stock rom. Verizon and motorola have security features built into the stock software to help them track people using what they consider illeagal tether apps. Please refrain from using such apps until there is a custom ROM released so as to avoid bringing us to the forefront of verizons attention. In the meantime use pdanet USB tether app located in market. It is important that we as a community stop using our knowledge to continue pushing carriers and handset manufacturers from locking us out completely. If we continue our current trend of outrite defiance in use of these wireless tether apps (wheather you think it should be ok or not is irrelevent until a court rules on it) we are only hurting ourselves in the long run. Please for now use pdanet or similar USB tether app as they are not frowned upon by carriers. If you need to know why here it is, USB apps allow only one device to be connected which limits bandwidth used at one time, wireless tethers allow you to run everything in your house simultatiously greatly increasing individual strain on the network and makeing the user experience for all worse in the long run as the network can only handle so much.
Well, there it all is, an informed public is a better public... Happy modding to all.

im sorry to burst this bubble but the securty system also stops you from tethering completely. Im rooted but open garden tether does not work.
Thanks for the info. I've deleted the Wireless Tether app.
Proof should be provided or people are going to chalk this up to fear mongering

This has been reported multiple times. Any device running the new gingerbread is going to be blocked from illegal tether unless a custom ROM is installed that overrides it, such as CM7.
Wtf guys? I have stated multiple times to use the droid 3 hack.

The proof will be when we are all sitting around complaining because we have been locked out. You can choose to follow this advice or not but, if you think that I would post something to monger fear then apparently you don't know me. It will be people like you who ruin it for all of us. If you don't believe me then do your own research. Disprove it but, until then don't be one of those fools that say global warming isn't real. The evidence is in front of us. Android was completely open in beginning and we were encouraged to develop away. Then as more people began to abuse their power (knowledge is power) the manufacturers and carriers started locking everything down. If you can't see it staring you in the face your blind. Another issue entirely is people who have no aptitude for this what soever are bricking their phones and then getting new replacements simply because they can't follow instructions and shouldn't be modding to begin with but, that's a different discussion for a different day.

Well, I'm happy to burst yours. Use pdanet, I've been using it since unboxing this beast. I used it to set up adb and to find rooting instructions. And then to download su.zip folder.

I agree with the premise of your original post, but when you resort to name calling and "You do the research to prove my point" all credibility goes out the window.
Im inviting him to disprove my point not prove it. My information comes from all over various forums. P3droid a well known developer in our community first brought this to our attention. And it has been discussed on many other sites. People can believe what they want. If you want to wireless tether then go ahead. You can do it by installing app from third party source or restoring a titanium backup version from previous device then freezing all stock apps and processes related to wireless hotpot in titanium. Good luck.
I am just a modder like the rest of you. I do not benefit nor have any reason to monger fear. I am just providing what I know and have read to increase awareness... do with it what you will.

please confirm anyone who has got this to work that the phone is to be in PC Mode.
Again I have all the drivers installed have .net installed and the radiocom program and the phone usb in pc mode
I am running windows vista home 32bit machine

I fired it up just to test it. Wouldn't work for me.
Wireless tether is one of the reasons I still have my Droid X on Froyo...I use it a lot.
If I were able to get it to work on the Bionic, I might would consider purchasing it...although I am not thrilled about the screen on the Bionic.
Tethering w/ a 2GB/Mo limit??
I'm afraid to run anything tethered unless I have to. I'm afraid I'm going to quickly exceed the 2GB/mo DL limit!!

I downloaded and installed 3.1 beta 6 and it fired up. As soon as the program started the default tether from motorola also started. I was able to send out a SSID and my eee pad tablet picked it up, however in the list of devices there was a * next to the name. I tried to connect, no go. Sure do hope Verizon doesnt send me a nasty letter
Guys... this happens. I pretty much think the kernel needs to be modified as this happens on my TBolt when a kernel has a bug. Until we see if the boot loader is going to be unlocked... dont hold your breath
There seem to be a lot of people who depend on tethering... why don't you guys just get PdaNet. Works perfectly fine on the Bionic and you dont even need root...

although you have said this multiple time, i have yet to see someone get it to work on a bionic.
nobody seems to be able to reproduce your results (if you have done this, not saying you didn't but i don't remember you saying you did either)
waiting for a custom rom may be a bridge to far for most people .. just depends on unlocking the bootloader... I am hopeing it will be soon...

[Q] How do I prove I'm NOT tethering?

I have a stock, but rooted Captivate. I do not tether. I do not even have a tethering program installed. I just got a warning letter from Att that I am tethering and unless I stop they will upgrade me to a tethering plan (from unlimited). I'm not even a heavy user (usually around 2GB/month).
I suspect my problem is that I use Dolphin browser with a custom user agent string (below) to force websites like Facebook to deliver a full website and not a mobile version.
Is there a "safe" user agent that will work that Att won't interpret as tethering? I doubt there is any way to convince them that their detection method is flawed - or does anyone know of one?

Dumb question - have you called and spoken with someone, and told them pretty much what you said to us?
My own personal experience is that as long as you're proactive and polite, they'll usually be pretty helpful.
richb500,
Have you deleted or uninstalled the Tethering Manager through Titanium Backup ? If not, I would suggest doing that... If that manager is gone, then how else would they know about any kind of tethering, whether intentional or unintentional ?
Just a suggestion since ur rooted.

I haven't done anything with Tethering Manager and I don't have any tethering programs installed - that's why I suspect it's a false positive hit they are getting on deep packet inspection because I have Dolphin pretending to be Firefox on Windows.
I had a very nice conversation with a very pleasant ATT rep. I explained what I am doing with Dolphin and she confirmed that this is fine. However, I couldn't convince her that this is likely what is causing the false positive.
Now here is where things get really crappy.... she can't tell me when I tethered, for how long, or how many times. No one reachable can. Only the unreachable, unquestionable networking group. There us is no way to challenge it, even if it results in my plan being changed. She said if it gets changed there is absolutely no way to get back into the unlimited plan.
It sounds like a real problem. Tomorrow I will try once again to reach a higher level person. If that doesn't work I will contract my consumer protection agency and also try to get the attention of the press.
A lot of innocent people are going to be mistreated. It's like the Salem Witch trials. No proof. No way to prove your innocence. No way to stop doing what you aren't doing.
Too bad we all don't have ergot poisoning though and aren't tripping balls like the salem witch trials...
Nope no unknown rye contaminate causing mass hysteria....just plain old boring and frustrating greed at work here.
Somehow I get the feeling that everyone that got grandfathered in to an unlimited plan is being super scrutinized and the slightest sign of anything "wrong" and they will change it. Like they're trying to get rid of all those unlimited plans and get everyone down to the 2gb limit, not to mention the ridiculous automatic $50 a month tethering plan...just a thought from a cynical zombie.
That's ridiculous. A lot of us are tethering, even if it isn't all that much. You are one of the innocent people who are not and you got a nastygram. I wonder how many more false positives there will be?

[Q] Using rooted Fire HD outside US

Hello guys!
I need some help with new Kindle Fire Hd.
I plan to use it outside US.
But the guy from Amazon support told me that outside US no internet connection available for device.
Is it even possible to control my wi fi connection over my location?
Here is another user experience using NOT rooted device outside US and sounds like it's completely useless.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892574
So I've decide to root my device, problem is this my first android device, and I don't quiet understand is rooting solve this problem?
I understand that rooting gave me ability to install side apps, see file system and stuff.
But what about internet using by location limitation?
So question is it possible to get internet connection on rooted device outside US?
I'm very sorry if it's noobish question, but right now I got pretty short amount of time to get "into android".
Thank You all anyways this place is great source of info!
I live outside the US, and received my Fire HD today.
While it's true that stuff like Amazon Prime doesn't work (and indeed, the Amazon Appstore as a whole), it's far from "completely useless". I rooted it pretty quickly, using the automated script posted here (and thanks the awesome community for that), installed Google Play and got pretty much everything I need on it.
Some apps from Google Play didn't play nice with the Fire at first (Skype and Facebook are two I had problems with), so I figured a kind of a workaround for the Amazon Appstore - just add a second payment method, using a test credit card number (which can be found on Paypal) and a random US address. This method allows you to download the free apps from the Appstore.
My Fire HD has been working fine since I got it 8 hours ago, so there's definitely no internet restriction of any kind if you're outside the US. The only restriction is on the Amazon content, which will hopefully be lifted in the future, as they expand their services.

Chromecast on University Wireless

When the Chromecast launched, I was under the impression that it was merely an Android device that was limited to streaming video/browser pages and would behave on a wireless network just like an Android device. However, I received a unit this morning and it's failing to connect to the Internet. Does anyone know of any special requirements that the Chromecast has? It obviously needs 802.11g (which we have), but I can't imagine it would need any special ports open.
I know this isn't a Q&A forum, but I figured it would be important to have this figured out and documented before millions of college students return to school over the next few months and network administrators freak out when Google provides no answers.
I've tried the chromecast on two different college networks, both without success.
From what I'm aware, the cc doesn't support 802.11. Also, many universities block multicast which also blocks chrome.
Any place with a NAC is doubtful at this point that will work
Also, most hotels will not work at this point as many have nacs, thus there is no way to log into the network. Hopefully Google comes up with a fix

If you do not have access to your router settings, or if you are attempting to connect through a guest, hotel or public network with AP/client isolation, you will be unable to set up your Chromecast.

Thank you both so much for your help. It's really disappointing being the bad guy that says students can't use X device on the network, I hope Google figures out another way to operate Chromecast.
It would be nice if they could make a way to enter in a pw after connecting. I think they will have a lot of complaints about this
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Unfortunately this is less likely a Google issue. The university and public wifis behave the way they do so people cannot see other peoples shasred devices easily, amongst other reason. Being so the ip address will be isolated and devices can't see each other.
One thing you can do is set up a router in your dorm. This is likely against protocol but they might not know
Also, you could try to share your Mac's WiFi connection, if you have one. This would potentially put your devices on the same subnet but I can't confirm. The DHCP leasing might still be handled by the university network.

It's funny that you mention that, I'm the guy that shuts down rogue access points in the dorms. Although I can't speak for all universities, most (if not all) of the universities that we are in contact with have banned personal APs because of the interference they cause (on 2.4GHz, I usually let 5.0 slide by, but Chromecast doesn't use 5.0). I believe that sharing your Mac's wifi connection would work, but AD-HOC networks are going to cause the same problem.
I'm actually stunned that Google would use a P2P connection over wireless. It represents a huge security threat, which is exactly why universities and businesses block it.
Is your network sophisticated enough to manually permit individuals to let their own devices see each other while connected to the campus network?

Recommendation for best VPN for Android

I need suggestion, I want the best VPN for my Samsung mobile
I have seen the cheapest deal of FastestVPN, they are offering 92% discount on 5 Year plan cost just $49.95 further they have also 10% extra discount coupon "FAST10"
I really got amazed with this deal as no other VPN provider is offering such awesome deal
I just want to know that have any one here tried this VPN?
Here is the deal link: blog.fastestvpn.com/black-friday-vpn-deals
I use ip vanish, from the following they have also for pc and android app. Been good to me for over a year. Just my opinion

I have been using Windscribe. Non idea whether how it compares to other options.

nordvpn and pia
stop using free vpn noobs
I would suggest ProtonVPN. Been using it for over two years. Had Pia and NordVPN before but they heavily rely on ads and sponsored reviews. Not bad companies but I just prefer to know where my vpn servers are located. Proton also has a secure core feature where they route your traffic through two countries.
Out of all the VPNs I've tried EspressVPN has the best speed for me. It's the most expensive out of all of them, but it's worth it for me since it's almost always connected, to a USA server and I'm in Romania, I've never seen content buffer, in Youtube or Netflix.

I use Express as well just because it has an app for the TV.
I've been using ExpressVPN for about 2.5 years now. They are pricy but I love their apps and the fact that at home I set up my home router with their services so anyone on my network is hidden/secure.
Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk
i use their Services aswell, never got any problems
FastestVPN I'm having loads of problems with both on WiFi and mobile data, not working with all providers
I use ufo vpn , quick and works on streaming services where noordvpn fails , plus you get a free service and chances to get premium for free
My vote is expressvpn service this is one of the best vpn For Android also other vpns are best like pure, nord, surfshark, ipvanish but i am always using ExpressVPN many good sources available to get the best VPN for android Like Pcmag.com , Cnet.com and Rivipedia.com are the best soruces to share the list of best providers
I also use Express vpn keep using the 7 day trial
Put any email address in they dont ask for clarification just let you get using asap which is a flaw in there system..
Enjoy
