So I take it that google just doesnt care about the consumer experience. - Nexus 4 General

Just got a nexus 4 for a friend and I am appalled at how average the screen still looks with stock kernel, how on earth has google not fixed this yet? Why does someone need to install franco kernel or whatever to get the best use of the hardware? Wasnt sheer optimization the hallmark of nexus? What is google doing it doesnt even care.
Similar was the story with the nexus S. You needed custom kernel to unlock the audio capability of the phone because google didnt want us to listen to such audio quality? It was simply appalling and did not make any sense at all especially after listening just how much difference it made to the sound quality and power.
I dont have much experience with the galaxy nexus so I cant say but once again the same old BS with the nexus 4, install custom kernel for blah blah cuz google is too lazy/doesnt care. Franco kernel makes such a big difference to the screen and there is obviously no "drawback" to this that I can see so what is google doing? It doesnt want its users to use their smartphones on a more beautiful screen with no cost added? The nexus 4 stock screen is even worse than the i9023 nexus S, what more can be said!!
PS: I am a power user and have no issues installing custom roms and kernels but due to google's indifference on so many things it seems like the nexus isnt that great a phone for noobs as it could be.

The screen looks much better now in Android 4.3

"Noobs" probably don't even know about the N4. They all buy the Galaxy S3/S4 or iCrap.

I think the screen is pretty good on my stock nexus 4 and thats from someone whos been a amoled user from the very start and i dont think google is the only one which didnt unlock its audio capabilities as samsung did the same with their galaxy s, that needed a kernel change i.e voodoo sound to release the full wolfson power.

Most people I know never even heard of the Nexus. I have to explain to them it is a Google phone. It isn't that Android doesn't care about the consumer. It is that this phone isn't targeted towards the average consumer. It is more a developers phone and such being the case, tweaking can be left for the great developers here.

Yes but its an old story now, I havent heard of any such thing with the S3 and S4.

I think you've missed the point of the Nexus line. First and foremost it is a developer oriented platform. If it was meant to be pretty and have tons of near-useless eye candy and apps you'd be looking at an iPhone or Samsung or HTC. Customize the Nexus however you want, it is meant to be a blank slate.

From the sharp mind that brought you 'all android apps have lag' and 'I don't understand why people complain about on screen buttons'... Here comes another epic thread.
Please everyone, take a look at the wonderful content that comes out of this guy's mind.

Just kidding , don't.

Thanks @drakester but I think the best thing is that honestly I don't think Gambler even owns Nexus 4.
So I'm not sure why to crap with all the negativity against it or Google and in this day and age with so many choices I can't even comprehend why not to go with the device you like instead of complain or sit down and start tweeking the way you want it - its Android! And please don't say there are limitations to what you can do with the customisation...
Or as an alternative please construct proper discussion and not complain.
Edit: please.... Power user? Or maybe yes you are right just a user indeed. So if yoy have so many issues why not to create something that everyone else could use it and enjoy it and you can set Google example how you believe things should be done.

One of the reasons why I get a nexus. Everywhere I have gone, it grabs attention. People used to seeing S3s and iPhones go 'that's a cool looking phone, which one is it'. Has even been a good conversation starter for me a few times. One time when I said it was from LG, this guy was like 'lg makes such nice phones too?!!'? LOL

N4 is relatively unknown, Google intended it to be that way..... imho, that's the only thing that makes any sense. Had the n4 had half the marketing the s3 or s4 had I think the n4 would've really made some noise.
What a shame, so many miss out on experiencing pure vanilla awesomeness

yeah. #1...truly...but only if you're rooted.
Of course it's #1 even on a Nexus forum
I have yet to see a new phone so far that surpasses the nexus one in all the major boxes. Things like build quality, rootability, community support, hardware etc. There have been many since that have beaten in in some areas. But it is still a very solid contender.
Nexus one is by far the gold standard of smartphones right now. Yes technology will surpass it at some point, thats inevitable. But in the here and now its topdog. Lots of friends i have use iphones and various android models and ive yet to see them be able to keep up with the speed and reliability of my N1. Im rooted using cm6 rc1 (wanting cm gingerbread) and im very happy that back in march i took the blind leap and bought a N1. Yes the business model behind the selling of the N1 was flawed but the actual phone was well worth it.
I love my N1! I think that some devices beat it in some areas but as an overall phone, especially for 'nerds', it has yet to be completely beaten.
The NexusOne's position is obviously doggy-style.

Cousin sold the SGS and bought a NS recently, so I played with it. What to say ? Build quality is great, SGS is a plastic toy compared to it. System is faster, because it doesn't have the crappy moviNAND like SGS (so no microlags) + also AOSP Android helps with that. There's no 720p video recording though and no 3G video call. The SLCD screen aint that bad, AMOLED on SGS still prettier though. Performance regarding apps & games is the same on both (same hardware), battery usage also (same battery size). Anything else ? If you're deciding between those 2, go for NS.

No my friend ! Bacause of shortage of super amoled screens samsung used lcd screen in nexus s for many countries ( i am from india and its lcd here) ! Also the processor is same in both galaxy s and nexus s but nexus s is a bit thivk also internal memory is just 4gb while galaxy s has 16gb! I dont think that nfc has gr8 use in the near future so dont compare in terms of nfc ! I also had the same choice and i chose galaxy s! But for a fact i must tell you that nexus s will be the first phone to be upated to ice cre sandwhich when it comes out ! Bit still go for galaxy s ! Its the best ! Also development of roms and all that stuff is more on galaxy s and in some countries nexus s has thr bootloader locked which can be unlocked but requires some work !

Honestly there isn't much difference. Nexus S gets stuff first, but the SGS eventually gets the same FW anyway.

Nexus vs Google Edition Phones

Hello
As you know the release of Samsung Galaxy S4 GE and HTC One GE offering the same flavour as Nexus users already have a taste for.
Do you think inclusion of the new type of camera app and various other features in these junks defeats the purpose of owning a Nexus? It is we who should get the update of even a minute bug squash or changes to any core app.
What would be the update cycle of these junk phones? Will the Android updates be prioritised for the Nexus or will it released for the junks together?
Sorry for being rude, as a loyal Nexus fan, I seriously hate these so called idiotic Google Edition.

I sound like a broken record saying this since day 1. The OEMs have to put their proprietary drivers and kernels (firmware) into the image or the software wont' know how to communicate with the hardware. I guess if the OEMs were willing to release them to Google then I guess Google could handle the updates. Then you have to ask: why would Google take on that responsibility? Would the OEMs openly give Google those drivers in a day and age where anyone can sue anyone over anything because something looks similar to something else? None of that makes sense.
Yeah I'm kinda dissapointed... I want the latest and greatest on my N4 but still don't have it... Hopefully it's just a matter of days... Hopefully hours....

I don't understand what you are saying. What other "features" are you talking about? A red phase beam wallpaper? These phones haven't been released yet. My guess is the N4 will get those changes when 4.3 is released which may come before the GE phones are even released. Most likely lots of backend changes to the camera were needed to get it to work with the new driver hardware in the GE phones.
Once they launch will be the last time they have something the Nexus doesn't. The moment Google said that HTC/Samsung were responsible for updates and they weren't hosting/posting source means those phones will almost certainly be behind the Nexus.

That's the point, why are GEs getting the new camera app with new arc like settings and Nexus are left behind. Why is that "we" should wait for 4.3 and expect that the new camera would be included in that. It is a clear blow to the loyal Nexus owners who actually gets all updates to the Android first, even a small bug squash.
And talking about other features, I'm sure there would be some still hidden not available to the Nexus owners.

why are some people sooo sensitive, "my nexus should get this first" , "all others must wait" ...
look a little out of the box, these Google Edition phones are promoting stock android, whether they'll get updates parallel with the nexus or will join after a few days/weeks delay it doesn't matter. We all want more stock android options, and that's a step in the right direction, popularizing stock bloat-free android.
So, yeah, grow up and stop acting like samsung galaxy/iphone/etc.. blinded fanboys.

PSA: Galaxy SII now $199 on HSN

OK I have a birthday tomorrow and as a present I am moving on to the Galaxy SII (yes, it's FINALLY my turn to say that!). $199 was too good to refuse, especially with 4 flexpays of $50. Two years of battling the Exhibit are enough, wouldn't you say? Anyway I will miss the forum around here a bit, even though we've had a number of departures over the past year. If it wasn't for the good folks in this community the Exhibit would have been retired LONG ago for me. Frankly without a custom ROM/kernel it is a POS device. No other way to put it! At least we have one or two new guys on the block to carry on for those who still have this phone or just got it. I wish them luck. As for myself I can't wait to try all the things that are available on XDA for this device. Hope I don't flash more ROMs than I did for the Exhibit or I will have no life left, LOL.
Anyway for those who are interested, go here for the deal: http://www.hsn.com/products/samsung-galaxy-sii-no-contract-smartphone-t-mobile/7334966
A couple months they ran out and just now got these phones back in stock. At that price I bet they don't have them for long.

Thanks man. Unfortunately HSN just raised the price back up to $249, same as they have it on Amazon. Man glad I didn't procrastinate anymore like I always do. Funny thing is I watched the video presentation they did on TV and I'm thinking how many more they could sell if they promoted the fact you can root & get the latest ROMs out there. Of course if they did that people would know they can get rid of that bloatware! Just think of the poor sheep who will just keep stock ICS on it.

I think that rooting is beyond the scope of most people's interest. As it also voids any warranty, the manufacturer would be slightly against HSN promoting the practice, is my guess.

They said 4.0 on the commercial and on the website. A friend of mine has one and it has ICS on it. No matter because it will be rooted and updated when I get it. Question will be whether or not to go with a 4.2.2 rom or KitKat. So many apps need to catch up to ART and the whole 4.4 OS system.

BTW if I forgot somebody it wasn't on purpose. Now on to the hard work of rooting and finding a ROM for the new phone. It has some sound bugs (some sound is fine with some apps and not others) and the vibration isn't as strong on key presses (but in other areas is fine and a tester app I found shows the vibration motor is fine). Meh, the speed just kicks butt! Also, having 2G of RAM is ..... awesome. The quad core ... anyway .. you get the idea.
I am still thinking of which ROM to put on ... I had cyanogenmod on my other phone and I loved it ... but they're not quite ready.
Take care and thanks for writing man!

Augh! RebelROM!!! I'm having a PTSD flashback! AD, it was good to work with you. You taught me a lot. Good luck. I will try to nab one of those Galaxy Lights to use as a DD, so i can keep playing with the Exhibit. It's a solid little phone and good learning tool. I wish you all the best and don't forget us!
I know I haven't been active in the exhibit community . But I'm glad you guys enjoyed RebelRom so much . Enjoy your nexus 5!

It's really good to hear from you man, and yes RebelROM was hands down the best GB ROM this phone ever had. People here can testify how many times I went back to it every time I got frustrated with one of the ICS ROMs back in the day.
Lol I just came back from rebel Lol, ran great but I sure did miss all the features of newer ROMs. But I like that galaxy light as well quad core with 1gb ram sounds a ton better then this lol

Man, I'm gonna miss seeing you around here because I don't say much and when things got a little quiet , you were still there, keeping the ball rolling. Everything ends at some point and I'm just waiting for the day this place turns into a ghost town. At least some awesome devs left us in a pretty.good spot. Also, thanks for all your help as you were part of making this phone great as well.
Good luck fellow Kentuckian!

long time no talk

Hello everybody!
Yes its been like for ever since i broke my HTC First and moved on and since then ive had an Atrix HD and now have a Red Nexus 5. Running lollipop.
But still i look back to this phone and still think this is probably the best phone ive owned. All day battery, great size and build quality, stock android. Yes development was always a minus, but still.
How is everyone doing?
PS: thinking of getting my sister an HTC First, its a pretty solid device hardware wise and she doesnt care much about software, she is using an old ipod touch and an ipad, shes tired of ios
Good to see someone else converting to the Android master race > lol. I agree with the fact that the battery generally lasted all day, but the lack of speed is what caused me to want to get something better. But yeah it was a good device when I came from a MyTouch 3G and then 3 Windows Phones.
Off topic here, are you seeing any drop in battery life on the official Lollipop update on your N5 compared to an AOSP version from a few days ago?

Haha I've converted to android since 2011 and my sister never likes apple anyways.
Miss this community so much, looks like everyone has left like Abraham and loir.
Um at first battery life was more like battery death but after a reboot and full charge I did manage to get my minimum of 4 hours screen on time. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get 5 hours.
I was thinking moto g, vs the HTC first, but I haven't found anything in it that is better than in the First. Especially for my sis who has really small hands surprisingly (she's 5 years younger but as big as me and I'm 19...)
still using my First and still hoping to get at least KitKat so that i can pair with android wear...
but looks like no luck and i have to change my phone soon.
:crying:
but seriously between first and Moto G, i'll get the moto G
at least you get official Lollipop support. 5 hrs SOT.
The 1st gen Moto G size is not that much bigger than the 1st

Yes you get software support..but this isn't for me. Its for my sister and plus I'd like to get back into hacking and stuff cause with a nexus you don't really want to tinker much

Yeah Lloir is no longer here since he bricked his First so he just upgraded to something else. Jmz is no longer here, and I'm not sure if sun_dream is here either. I know someone was working on a CM11 port but he told me that he needed to learn more before it was going to work well enough for daily use.

I just hate to see such a good device "go to waste".
I also wish i could port cm11, atleast learn some how, but my only computer is my desktop at home, and internet at 700kbps is not enough to do anything except browse the web. But if internet wasnt a problem id definitely try even though i have no idea how.
CM puts so much effort into mainstream devices that will get updates anyways and never focus on forgotten devices.

Yeah and it's sad because it didn't use to be like that. It's gonna be even worse when CM12 is released because they said that if a device 1) is not owned by maintainers or 2) can't cooperate with the new security measures then they won't support it at all.

Yeah probably. The best part is though that the GS3 Mini and Motorola Defy have both gotten 5.0 ports.

I'm gonna try to contact carbon ROM and see if they could take up development here. Better than nothing.

Its like a more stable version of CM with more features brought over from other Roms but its not as crazy as paranoid android or aokp
I dont want to upgrade also, I know i'll miss the design of the First if I sell it
I agree, First is a great phone, stylish, great design and ergonomics, i will keep this phone no matter what. My daily driver is Moto X, 2013 model. I like to use my phone in one hand, never liked anything over 4.7-in screen size, have had Samsung S3, original Note, Note 2 and Note 3, traded them all, although i really liked S3 the most, couldn't live with the Notes. Htc First has become my backup phone. Previously, i used a Palm Pre Plus as my backup, but i finally traded it in.

Not that I know of. It's strange considering getting drivers for this chip set should be a piece of cake...
