[Mod] ☆Reel's Mods☆ - .zip and .qmg Boot / Shutdown anis, Icons and Themes (10/14/13)
This will be a collection of all the mods and hacks I come up with, rather than just posting in the forum for my current device. Some mods will be universal and some will be for specific devices and ROMs. I will label everything accordingly but that doesn't mean I assume ANY responsibility for what you do with my stuff. Each section has it's own instructions so read carefully. Always make a backup before modding anything.

Boot Animations
Only tested on Galaxy S3 and Note 2 (720x1280 @30fps unless otherwise specified.
Thanks to smokin1337 for Bootanimation4U!
Thanks to kevinrocksman for his Boot Ani Zip Enabler for Note 3
Boot Animations: Touchwiz or AOSP
Easy Install:
If you haven't enabled custom boot animations or it isn't already supported by your kernel;
Read and grab Bootanimation4U
Download XYZBootanimation.zip and rename to "bootanimation.zip"
Add bootanimation.zip to /system/media/ (for Touchwiz) OR /data/user/ or /data/local(for AOSP)
Flash Bootanimation4U.zip in recovery
Advanced Install:
Flash bootanimation4u.zip from recovery.
Reboot and install Boot Animations Root from the Play Store. It is also included in Rom Toolbox, if you already use it.
Go into the app's preferences and change install location to /system/media/ (for Touchwiz) OR /data/user/ or /data/local(for AOSP) and leave the default filename (bootanimation.zip) and go back to the main screen.
Select the Local tab, browse for the bootanimation file (No need to rename)and hit Install.
Tap the options key and select Preview current. Make sure you like it and reboot.
You can preview it before installing the animation if you buy the Pro version, but the preview quality is better if you install it first anyway.
If you need to resize a bootanimation for a different device's resolution follow my video guide here:
Samsung .qmg Boot Animations
The Galaxy Note 3, and I am assuming newer Samsung devices do not support bootanimation.zip files out of the box. Until we have a way to get that to work we are reliant on replacing bootsamsung.qmg with an edited version. This is an extremely limited way of getting it to work. It causes bootanimations not to run as smoothly as .zip format animations with optimized images. The Samsung Theme Designer app I use to make TW shutdown animations is not very good at compressing or optimizing images, which becomes more apparent the larger the animation resolution is. Ideally, you would want to use a centered small graphic with a black background to make it look as if it were truly fullscreen. Well it appears that Samsung threw yet another wrench into the gears and now it doesn't work that way anymore. When I try to use a non-fullscreen image it stretches it to fill the whole screen and that makes it look like poo-poo. It does not look anywhere near as fluid as the smaller "fake" fullscreen ones did on my Note 2.
Samsung Theme Designer also only lets me import up to 255 images, unlike the usual 300 I tend to use in a bootanimation.zip for 30fps. I am not sure if that results in a slightly shorter bootanimation or if it means that it uses the same duration but runs it at a slower framerate. <shrug> But it could explain the choppiness. It could also just be that .qmg animations are more resource heavy. I also still have to figure out which way it runs smoother; a native res 1080x1920 or 720x1280 and let the device do the upscaling. I dunno the recipe, I am just sayin'.
I have only tried converting a couple of my 720x1280 bootanimations and they worked, although they didn't come out great. This is going to be a learning experience for me until I figure out the optimal settings to make them run smoother. I am going to start converting some more of my older bootanimations to the .qmg format, as well as creating new ones.
Installation:
Download and rename XYZbootsamsung.qmg to bootsamsung.qmg and replace the one in /system/media.
Update:
Thanks to @kevinrocksman we now have .zip support for Note 3. Just flash one of his boot animations here to enable it and you can install any .zip bootani after that.
If you want to request anything just post a link or youtube video. Obviously 720p or better results in better bootanimations.

Make sure it's "shutdown.qmg" in all lower case letters and place it in the /system/media/video/shutdown directory. Try another one and let me know if it's the file itself, thanks.

Matches it perfectly lol.
Edit: almost.
Cool. I looked back at a previous thread I started about a Tron Legacy Swype and saw that someone was willing to do it. Turns out it was you. lol. BTW is this compatible ONLY with andromedia 1.2? and not anything newer like 2.1?

I didn't update swype it just naturally matches it. I do plan to theme the gingerbread keyboard like that though. It should work fine on 2.1 but it won't look right. This theme doesn't change text color. It's pure image editing. I believe I posted a 2.2 to 1.2 cwm zip in the glowen thread. You could use that then this right in a row then reboot. Fyi the 2.+ versions of andromeda are not newer just the themed version with orange.
Ninja update : music notification bar is now matches the theme.

Ah, I get what you mean then. Come to think of it the stock swype does seem to match it. Overall its a pretty cool theme. Much more unique than most of the wannabe tron legacy themes out there.
I'm going to be working on it a lot. Once I figure out how I'm going to handle the icon set and the launcher it should make a dramatic difference too. Going to take a few days off first though. Lol busted my ass to get it where it is now.
is it safe to use this with andromeda 2.2?

Haha there are like a million different color toggles on the market. I'll probably just leave it how it is. Plus I'm going to busy with icons for awhile. I'll think about it when they are done.
Holy **** this is beatiful. Gonna flash andromeda just to try it out haha
Any chance of this being ported over to Perception? No worries if it would be too much hassle, I'm already downloading Andromeda 1.2 to give it a go
Edit: Can i just replace the bootanimation.zip in the andromeda rom before i flash it then? (I forgot the directory it's in, but i guess i can snoop around and find it again)

I'll do ports when it's 100% complete, or close to it.
If I remember right the andromeda zip doesn't have a boot animation zip in it. But can try doing it. If it compresses it won't work. Better to just install andromeda let it do it's first boot then drop the animation zip in /system/media/ then reboot.

Ah ok. I've got the ROM all booted up and themed as well as finished my tibu restore. So far it looks really good, though the loading symbol is a bit choppy looking. I would also like to see some of the menu icons darkened as the grey menu icons don't mesh too well with the light blue backgrounds.
I gotta say though, the pull down menu is absolutely beautiful. And the blue notification bar throughout the os looks very nice. Now I just need to figure out how to theme my notification icons
I'm going to look and see if there's a bootanimation zip in the ROM. if not, does that mean that the rom doesn't support it?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
The loading circle is as intended. Though I may make it semi transparent. A lot of the menus are not how I want then yet. I will probably lighten the menus rather then darken the menu icons. Andromeda does support boot zips, I use the one attached here.
Cool beans, I'll be checking in on the thread for updates to see how it evolves
As for the animation, I dropped the zip into the media folder last night and it worked perfect.

How kitchen works
Kitchen originally was build for HTC Desire, but now it supports most devices with Android OS.
Kitchen takes files from your rom and adds modifications you choose.
It works for most custom deodexed roms: Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbead (2.3).
You can use kitchen with stock odexed roms (if you have .odex files in your rom - kitchen works for you too)
How to use kitchen
1. Go to Kitchen page http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/
2. Browse through available mods and choose what you need (don't forget to press Generate preview if theris such button)
3. Go to File upload section and upload your files or choose rom from kitchen's list (most roms in the list is for HTC Desire)
Files needed to upload:
Froyo rom: framework-res.apk
Gingerbread rom: framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk
Gingerbread with sense rom: framework-res.apk, SystemUI.apk and com.htc.resources.apk
Cyanogenmod7 rom: Cyanbread.apk or Androidian.apk or any theme for ThemeChooser (rename as you like it to apear in theme menu)
NOTE 1: if you uploading theme apk - do not upload any other files (you just waisting trafic, because kitchen will ignore additional files)
NOTE 2: Font packs and Bootanimation do not requires uploading files.
4. Go to Summary section. All choosed mod must be in green background. If there is mod in red background - it means you did not finished it.
press Submit work to kitchen
5. Remember UOT file name. You can wait for a kitchen to cook your request, but after 5min waiting will be stopped (nothing to worry about).
6. Go to Pickup page http://uot.dakra.lt/pickup/ and wait for your file to appear (it can take up to 30min or more)
7. Download UOT zip into SD card of your phone
8. Reboot into recovery
9. Wipe cache and dalvik-cache (just in case). Do not make factory reset.
10. Flash UOT zip
11. Reboot phone
How get files for kitchen
Check your How-to page
What to do of the UOT-......... ZIP file
1. Reboot into recovery.
2. choose "install zip from sdcard"
3. choose "choose zip from sdcard"
4. locate your file UOT-... .zip in SD
5. confirm "YES - install UOT ... .zip"
6. wait for script to finish
7. reboot phone
If you cooked file for ThemeChooser - you can unzip UOT and install apk as regular one. After that - select new theme in Theme Chooser and reboot phone.
WARNING! Flash UOT file after you have first boot.
If you flashed new rom, boot up your phone first time
and after that reboot into recovery to flash UOT file.
What to do if you get SHTF error
Kitchen uses inteligent approach to your files and tryes to fix most of errors, but sometimes apk tools fails to recompile your files and kitchen can't do nothing.
If you get SHTF error and want to ask for help in forum - please, mention UOT file name and ROM or Theme you are using. Also, telling your device will be very helpfull.
If you using popular ROM/Theme - you can try to cook our corrected framework-res.apk from the list.

It took a lot of effort and time from us to make this kitchen and it takes a lot more to maintain it .Users should realise this and appreciate the work done.
Bugs and errors (except decompiling error) will be tried to solve but we need the code you receive back when you upload your file. backups of the same will be kept for 12 hours. so if you have an error respond within that time
We are not responsible for any damage that occurs to your device by the use of the themes created here though if such an unfortunate event occurs do tell us we'll be happy to help
There is a lot more to come in the near future like changing the status bar, icons, notification screen, the popups etc etc.
Suggestions are welcomed for future releases.

pick-up?
So iwent through the whole process and uploaded the cyanbread theme apk. from theme chooser, it completed the upload but when I go to "pick-up" section how do I identify which file is mine?
the "file upload" sevction did give a UOT-xx-xx-xx-x to identify exactly which file is the one I created..
Thanks

It might have been a bug but it was a welcomed one! Please bring it back!
Seriously, is there any way to implement it? The known method (editing notification_config.txt) doesn't solve the problem, it creates an empty space (see attachment). I'm sure I'm not the only one who would use it.
TIA.

removing this mod can cause FC's as system still tryes to use it.
will see what can be done.
Does it only support Androidian and Cyanbread themes because im having trouble installing a theme other than those two.

I did it using greybread, works fine. I can't seem to get a transparent/25% background working though.
mendozinas,
The resulting apk files that I get back from UOT Kitchen are consistently much larger than what I upload. The only mod I'm using is the battery mod.
For example, I just uploaded the framework-res.apk from ProTekk's #8, which is 3.29 MB. I applied the battery mod and cooked: nothing else. The kitchen returned a framework-res.apk that is now 6.19 MB.
The framework-res.apk I submitted contained 1,156 files. The kitchen added 178 files, which makes sense since it has to create all the battery images. But it also changed an additional 669 files. Why?
It looks like a lot of files are being unnecessarily replaced with less optimized versions that appear the same, but are larger in size.
Example: /res/drawable-hdpi/btn_zoom_page_press.png
Input: 2.98 KB
Output: 3.48 KB
Is there a way to prevent this?

Kitchen is not changing others images. File size can increase because kitchen is recompiling apk.
And it up to apk tools how it treats images.
Kitchen don't use png optimizing.

[Bootanimation](Updated AGAIN04/10)Flavored HoneyComb Boot & HitchHiker)MOAR Colors!
**EDIT**
This thread in the Evo Themes & Apps Section
Link & attachments are here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028921
The last boot preview cycles through Google's signature colors, blue, red, yellow, and green.(Changes colors every 3 frames). If you have photosensitive epilepsy, please be aware. I wouldn't know whether or not this could cause a seizure or something of that nature, but this is just a precaution. (I mention it because it reminded me of this music video).
I recently moved from the MIUI Rom on my Evo to the CyanogenMod 7 RC4 (for now). While on MIUI I had it Honeycomb themed for the most part. Wanting to try something new, I moved to Cyanogen, and was for the most part burnt out on the honeycomb theme, but I really still enjoyed the honeycomb boot animation.
To stay in line with the Cyanbread theme, but keep the honeycomb boot animation I created the below for myself. It was actually a pretty simple modification, considering my less than desirable Photoshop skills. I also optimized the images as much as I could to keep the file size down. The end results actually ended up being a bit smaller than the original, with no real visible loss in quality.
If there is any interest in other colors just left me know, I would be more than happy to throw them together.
To install: Just use a File Explorer. (I used ES File Explorer). Rename the boot animation of your choosing to bootanimation.zip and rename your current boot animation bootanimation.zip_bak or something in case you want to move back to it. You now also have the option to use the flashable zips included below!
Note on ES File Explorer:I've never had any problems replacing system files with it, however you may need (while file explorer is open) Press Menu - Settings - Root Options. Make sure Root Explorer and Mount File System are both checked. If they are checked and it isn't working, uncheck the boxes and recheck them and it should then work.
Location of bootanimation:
The boot animation for CyanogenMod is currently in the system/media folder.
To my knowledge for MIUI it would be in /system/media also, or possibly the data/system/theme1/boot (if you are using a themed boot screen already).
Some people might also find it in the data/local or system/customize/resource folders.
All credit for the flashable zips included go to Tiffany84, Thank you!

I designed it for my Evo, i'm not familar with the Thunderbolt, but I would believe it would be the same process and a similar if not the same location. Are you rooted? What method are you using to install? Are you using one of the flashable zips, or are you manually moving the bootanimation.zip to the correct folder? Are you using root explorer, ES File Explorer etc?

I agree, I think it would look awesome with an android logo! I'm actually not a big Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fan personally, I was just helping out someone who requested it over in the Evo forum, so I made it to his specifications. I wouldn't consider myself an artist/animator really, but I don't think it would be that difficult for someone verse in Flash or Photoshop to modify it appropriately.

Thanks, Glad you like it. I originally wasn't going to do a blue, but I wanted to try something different with the multi colored Google themed version, and I had already batched the entire thing blue anyways for that one, so I just zipped it up and tossed it on here. Same goes for the yellow version.

I believe after a really quick search in the MyTouch Themes threads, it looks like the boot animation might reside in the data/local folder or the system/customize/resource folder? In any case, if the flashable versions are not working for you, you would need to move them to the correct folder, (delete or backup the current bootanimation.zip) and rename new animation to bootanimation.zip. Root access is necessary of course as well.

i know how to change the bootanimation.zip and all........but since the only time i really see the animation is when i flash a CM nightly, i will never get to see the boot animation in this forum unless i can flash it, since when you flash a nightly it goes back to the CM7 boot animation.

yep that is exactly how to get it to work on the MT4G, data/local for CM6/7 and system/customize/resource for "pure" Sense except for Espresso based ROM, in that case it is system/customize/resource just like "pure" Sense, but they would need to rename the file "TMUS_bootanimation.zip"
these are recolors are awesome! I'm running the blue one right now on my MT4G, the "Google" one on my MT3G-S and the pink one on my wife's MT3G-S running CM7RC4 with a combo of the Punk Pink and Pink-a-ton themes... she loves it

Whether you flash it or move it manually, it puts the files into the same folders, its just two different approaches at getting it there. (So anyone feel free to clarify or correct me if I'm wrong) So after each CM nightly flash you would have to move the bootanimation manually or flash it again anyways? Tiffany84 actually put the flashables together for me on the Evo boards, I'd assume flashing a nightly would overwrite the update-script in her flashables anyways? Again I could be wrong but thats just my educated guess.

No problem, anytime I see something cool like this that will/should work on multiple devices I'm more than happy to help get it working on other devices if I can and help get the writer's eye-candy out there to spread the word.
side note : for those who do decide to put this on HVGA devices such as the MT3G-S you need to un-zip the file > open the desc file and change the first 2 groups of numbers from 480 800 to 320 480 > save changes and re-zip the file then push/flash whichever method you use on your devices. you don't have to do this but it will look "right" if you do.

If you happen to have the bootanimation.zip(or whatever it may be called) for the xoom, I can theme it, i still have the settings from all the colors in photoshop. If your rooted you should then be able to just replace the one you have now with the one I make. I'd assume this one would work(as it was initially pulled from the xoom, I just themed it (you should just be able to change the resolution in the desc.txt file to whatever the xoom's is, and use the ones I have.) I dont know if the original animation pictures are bigger for the xoom. Sorry if that response is kind of garbled, I'm actually at work

funny, resolution is like 1408 x 800 according to this... maybe they over-stretched it to compensate for something... the original boot anim is kinda lame quality on the xoom!

Sorry, yea I didnt have time to refine my thought process at that point in time lol.
If its working and doesn't look stretched or anything, great. I was just attempting to say that if you wanted me to theme your stock boot animation, instead of using one of mine from the OP, I could do that for you.
I wasn't sure if the animations I used were of the same quality as the one found on the xoom, as our screens are smaller than the tablet. I know they originally came from the xoom, but i didn't know if any resizing occurred when someone originally used it on our phone.
Hope that makes a little more sense
I just tried flashing the red bootanimation an it cannot be flashed through cwm 3.0.0.5 abort error message comes up talking about a script thingy sorry I couldn't be more specific.

The picture quality is identical, the bootanimation used must have been originally that size, the images even from your xoom are only 512 x 256. ( So I'm assuming it has to stretch even on the Evo, so it must really stretch on the zoom.) I've messed around with one and even rebooted it to see the animation in the store, lol, but I guess I didn't examine it real close. Here is your boot screen revised with the google colors however, in the proper landscape format,(Evo's are rotated for portrait mode) and the stock resolution settings. Try that and see if it looks better/same.
Edit: Just make sure you rename it bootanimation.zip again before you swap itout again.

BIOS Boot Animation with sound
This has been floating around for a couple of years now so I take no credit for the original idea.
I simply edited all of the images to match the specs of the Thunderbolt.
When booting it has a sound of a hard drive starting up with beeps like an old PC.
This file greatly speeds up the boot proccess of the Thunderbolt as well!
The original file is about 3meg, this file is just over 1meg.
Animated gif preview:
The attached zip file is not a flashable zip, it contains the boot animation.zip and the mp3 sound file. Open the zip file and copy the bootanimation.zip and the FinalThunder.mp3 to your computer so that you can copy them to your phone.
Depending on the ROM you are using place the 2 files in the following directory on your phone. If you are unsure, just look in the directory and if it has bootanimation.zip and FinalThunder.mp3 then you are in the right place.
You may have to set permissions on both files to rw-r--r--
(You could also use adb to push the files to your phone if you would rather)
If you think you may want to revert, copy the originals somewhere on your SD Card first.
Stock ROM (and probably most custom ROMs:

Boot Animation
This is the same boot animation as in 1.4 but where the 4GLTE fades in at the bottom with the lightning around it I changed it to BAMF.
When it fades out and comes back in it still says 4GLTE.
This is just one frame to give you the jist of things.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.
Download the file to your phone (make a backup copy in case you want to revert)
NOTE: rename the file to: bootanimation.zip
Move it to the appropriate place on your phone and set the permissions rw-r--r--
NOTE: in 1.4 the bootanimation.zip has been moved to:
/system/media

If you like it hit the thanks button!

BAMF Boot Screens
This is not the boot animation, this is the first screen that shows up before the boot animation and when booting into cwm.
NOTE: If you flash this, restoring from a backup will not revert it, it is there to stay until you flash another boot image.
This is a flashable image, it has to be flashed via bootloader.
Download the file of your choice and rename it to PG05IMG.zip and place it in the root of your sdcard and reboot into bootloader.

Unfortunately skins don't change the icons in the status bar.
Those are in the system framework files.

I wonder If we can find a way to add more without overriding anything....but I got my hands full for now.

Thanks man, I take that as a real complimentary coming from you.
As far as creating more...
I tried the easy way, I added a new folder "clock8" but no luck.
Since these clocks are all called from HTCclockwidget.apk, it would have to be something in the code in that file.
I personally didn't care for any of the clocks I replaced, and for that matter have never seen anyone run them.

Thanks for the hard work, they look great!
Can you create a version for Rolex Daytona watch as well?

[update:22/05 New type5 boot animation]My custom Nvidia Bootanimations & wallpapers
Disclaimer I am not responsible for any damage to your device.
I wanted something else as boot animation so I created a couple myself. I only tested this on shield tablet K1 , stock MM 6.0.1 and do not guarantee it to work on anything else.
The source of the animation is intended for landscape view only so the portrait animation might not look as appealing as the landscape animation. I intend to smoothen out the animation a stretch more in near future when time permits.

I did not create the base images for these boot animations, i just extracted them from source, edited them to liking(paint.net, photoshop) and packaged them into zip files. Q&A's
what is general file naming structure used ?
Files are usually named in bootanimationtype_fps(_splchar_).zip
Which files to download?
Initially choose which type of boot animation style do you want, then decide which fps rate do you prefer then download that type of boot animation file of that particular fps.
ex: i decided i like type 2 at 30fps so i have to download type2_30fps.zip
How do i restore to default stock one?
currently unavailable , ill provide a flashable zip for this tomorrow.
I am unable to see the boot animation on my device
Which rom and android version are you using, these are meant for stock MM rom.
I don't understand the animation part 1 & part2
Okay so basically each boot animation has two parts part1 and part 2 ; part1 will only play once and then part 2 will kick in and play infinitely until the device completes its booting process.
Are these flashable zip's ?
Absolutely not , i will look into them once i upload all intended boot styles and and iron out some glitches.
Yes i got some time and now all boot animations are available in flashable zip formats.
What are padded and zoomed animations
As informed in first post , base images used for these boot animations is in landscape so when viewing in portrait some tend to cut off[zoomed] so I provided an alternative [padded] where images remain same size but black bars appear on top and bottom . Its up to you to decide which one to use.
I hate both padded and zoomed animations, is there any alternative?
I'm pretty sure there is but editing ~125 to 200 frames per animation is insane and I might only do this if many people ask and time permits.
Wallpapers
I made these while creating the boot animations ; so I uploaded them just in case anyone finds them interesting.
Suitable for both landscape and portrait orientation.
resolution : 1920 X 1920
format : png

Awesome!
Hey shy and hidden 400 xda members , i would like to know if you guys are okay with 30 and 60 fps or would you like me to create another batch using 24 fps , cause i feel the boot animations are rushed out even in 30 fps.
Thanks for this!
I'm using the type 2 @ 30fps - it would be nice if it could be slowed down a bit more to be really appreciated.

Hey I've added 24fps but type2 animation is very small in total frames available so there is not much of an improvement with 24fps.
Where links for Part2? On all links Part1

Part 2 is in the Part1 flashable zips. [All type animation zips contain part 2 within them] You dont have to download any extra file for part 2.
Just download a type of animation you want and flash it in twrp. You will see part 1 animation followed by part 2 animation when you boot.

Can you explain this?
Lovely animations but how can I make them to play an infinite loop? (part1 in loop...not the part2) also I would like to know if I can change the first image when the shield is booting with one of your wallpapers and how?
This link are fallen "Downlaod type2_60fps"
