Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've made this thread to help people who have some problem and make new threads instead of searching the common questions. In my next post I will start posting the FAQ's and since it's not possible for me to be online 24/7 so it may take sometime but i will keep updating it. And if anyone have some doubts feel free to ask. BTW Ifeel free to PM me if you have some ideas or nice questions to improve this thread

Q1: I get bootloop after installing a custom rom. What is the problem?
A: Have you done everything correctly?
-Firstly post your problem in the ROM thread as the devs there may help you better.
-Check your mobile compatibility with the ROM
-Check if you have installed the correct kernel for your ROM.
-Check whether you have done the correct wipes as mentioned in the ROM thread.
-Some ROMs require formatting system. So if it is mentioned in main ROM thread then you must do it.
-Some releases may require stock rom first before flashing the custom rom. So flash the stock rom and then the custom rom over it.
If nothing works just download the stock ROM for your mobile and flash it using flashtool. This may solve your problem.
Q2: Can you suggest me the best ROM or kernel or something like that for my smartphone cause i'm really lazy to do a bit of searching...?
A: as per XDA rules a user is not supposed to ask for Best rom, one can go to dev forum and try some roms and decided which is best for them
Q3: I have rooted my phone successfully, now how can I install CWM (ClockWorkMod) Recovery?
A: go here download the the cwm and follow the thread properly to flash there
Q4: I have a problem with this ROM and what should I....
A: It's a ROM specific question, better post it in the ROM thread. They will help you better.
Q5: What is the safest way to root my phone or unlock its bootloader?
A: There no such thing as safest way. If you do everything correctly you will be successful in rooting you phone and unlocking the bootloader
Rooting - go here
how to root new fw .245--http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405933

Q6: How do I deodex a rom
A:go here and flash the zip as per ur fw version
Q7: How do I back up my TA partition
A:use this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598
Q8: How do I build a kernel for SP
A: go here
Q9: From where i do download stock ftf files
A: go here where u need to flash these files through FLASHTOOL
Q10: How do I OC(OverClock) or UC(UnderClock) my phone?
A: If your kernel supports the function and if your ROM has inbuilt option for the fuction then you can do it directly from ROM or else you can buy/download apps like SetCPU for your phone and can use it easily to OC, UC or change governer of your CPU. *Playing with your CPU is at your own risk and if you go anywhere wrong your phone might not be able to recover(permanent brick). So if you are a newbie(noob) just stay away from these things*
Q11: How does Thanks Meter affect my profile?
A: Thanks Meter actually is not useful in becoming Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer. It is actually the appreciation you get on you works. Thanks Meter has been made so that members of XDA stop posting just THANKS on threads and thread could be clean and helpful.
Q12: How to be a Recognized Contributor/Themer/Developer?
A: Recognized Contributor is a role intended for members who produce some of the best original and helpful guides for users, as well as helping other users who have problems, in a friendly manner. Recognized Contributors will get a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Contributors, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Themers are those users who work (often tirelessly) on designing new theme graphics and user interface overhauls for ROMs. Users who aspire to be Recognized Themers should be creating original graphics work for their themes being released, demonstrate a commitment to crediting other users’ work when applicable, and seek the relevant permission in advance from the original creator. Recognized Themers will receive a custom user title and the faster ad-free XDA template, as well as access to developer tools currently being created. Any Senior Moderator on XDA can add Recognized Themers, should you feel deserving of this title.
Recognized Developer, as the name suggest are those who develop really good ROMs, kernels, etc. Anyone who is skillful and publishes his own creation other that just copying and pasting can be termed as recognized developer.
For more details and how to apply for these posts. See this.
Q13: Why does my phone say Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No?
A: It's most probably a simlock. The mobile you bought has a simlock of the particular company whose SIM is being used. Normally the companies used to provide the unlocking code after sometime but now I think it won't be provided from now since simlock unlocking has become illegal. But you can break your simlock through WotanServer, Omnius or some local shops.
Q14: Can you tell me how does thanks meter increases with regard to number of thanks?
A:No. of Thanks and meter:

Q15: What are BB Codes and what BB Codes can I use in my thread?
A: Mainly every kind of text formatting that we do in XDA thread is governed by BB codes. Here is the list of all the BB Codes we can use in XDA and explanation of each code.
Q16: Is there anyway to mount my sd-card using CWM recovery?
A: Yes! Many versions of CWM support mounting sd-card through it. For that go to Mounts and Storage->Mount sd-card and you're done! But remember if you press back button then your sd-card will unmount instantly.

I need 12.0.a.2.254 for c5302
I need 12.0.a.2.254 for c5302. Can i get the link to download the ftf file?

hi. i just bough my xperia sp last week. i have a very noob question since im all new to these: will this rooting method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375 (doomlord's method) work on a stock xperia sp? (literally out of the box, with the latest firmware v.254). thanks a lot. im quite undecided if im gonna root mine cause im afraid ill brick it.

Unlocking No or Yes?
I have a question: in my fisrt attempt to unlock bootloader, on the step to confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader, the configuration "Bootloader unlock allowed" sayd "No". So, i´ve flashed the newest firmware for C5303 (2.254) and now, the configuration "Bootloader unlock allowed" said "Yes". It´s "YES" really? Or am i risking to brick my phone on unlocking bootloader? (Sorry my bad english)

DELETED. Worked it out myself

Root 12.0.A.2.254
Hi Guys.
Sorry for the newbie question, but I didn´t find the answer...
If I follow the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375) to root my phone I will loose my data and configurations?
It is necessary to make the Wipes?
My phone was with firmware 211 and I had done the root successfully, but he upgraded to 254 and lost the root. When I open the SuperSU it presents the message that the binaries are not installed. Is it really necessary to do this procedure or is there another way to retrieve the binaries SuperSU.
Thanks,
Rafael

Hello
I don't think there is any wipe needed in this method.
If you really don't want to setup your whole phone again, try without any wipe. In the worst case you might get some force close. Do some backups anyway before trying to root because you might loose data accidentally. It sometimes happen and more often when you try to tweak / root your phone.

Even if you are rooted you can still flash an official ftf (for example official 4.3 when it's available). You might need to use flashtool instead of pc companion though ( I'm not really sure of that but I think you can easily find more info about that when you need it).
Bootloader unlocking is only to use a custom kernel. It is for example needed if you want to install a ROM based on aosp (pure android) instead of the stock Sony software. You won't need it and you should avoid that if you are not really sure of what you are doing.
Back to your Wi-Fi problem, the fixes available for root user don't really enhance it. They only make it a little more stable. It's not really worth it to root just for that and unless you have lot of free time to spend in this you should wait for version 4.3. There's many chances it will be fixed.

Xperia Rooting & Rom Flashing help

Hey,
Quick bit of advise needed - after reading various posts about rooting and unlocking the bootloader on the Xperia Z my head is not hurting..can I ask what I will lose if I unlock the bootloader using sonys method (bravia 2 engine etc) as I want to try out some roms however still have the safety net of being able to re-flash the stock rom should all go pear shaped.
I have the Android ADT developers bundle on my PC, the fast boot driver installed and my Xperia Z rooted using one of the all in one tools which was downloaded from this site yesterday.
I guess I am trying to see how easy it would be to take everything back to stock with all features working should the flashing of roms not work.
Cheers
Scott

thanks - the search blew my mind as there were so many different opinions and I wanted to get an expert answer.
never mind
Unlocking the bootloader wipes all of your data (it's a safety procedure), as you already know you lose the BE, you can also lose warranty.
If you mess up your phone, in almost all cases, you can use the Sony Flash Tool (Google it) to restore it to the stock ROM.
Hope I helped! ;D

Atrix HD Beginners Guide

So you have yourself a shiny new Atrix HD and you've come here looking to flash custom roms. Before you get started, you need to learn the basics of Atrix HD (AHD) roms; how to root stock, how to unlock the bootloader, where obtain and set up our custom fastboot executables, what to do when things go wrong, what NOT to do, and what to add to your posts so your not just saying I have a bug or XYZ force closes on me...
Let's start of with a brief history lesson.
Motorola phones are notorious for being locked down and very difficult to do custom roms on. Very few Moto devices have native unlockable bootloaders, and most of the unlocked ones were unlocked via the great devs of the scene or from straight up blunders from Motorola. Our Atrix HD was no exception. It came locked down, but soon had SafeStrap Recovery from Hashcode. SSR installed itself to the /system partition and acted in a very similar manner to Defy 2nd-Init and other /system based 2nd-init recoveries. For a locked device it was/is the ideal recovery to use.
A few months back Dan Rosenberg successfully unlocked the bootloader for us and since then things have changed drastically and for the better. We've gone from Stock-Based Ports and CM10\.1 modded for locked bootloaders to full custom kernels, multiple Source-Based roms, using CWM over SSR, and all our old tips and tricks are almost all no longer valid and we do different things now. IF THE POST YOU'RE LOOKING AT IS BEFORE APRIL 2013 THEN DON'T BOTHER READING IT UNLESS IT IS FOR STOCK AND YOU RUN STOCK.
Where to Start on you Atrix HD Journey
You're gonna want to start off by setting up adb, fastboot, and if on Windows, the drivers & RSD.
ADB Guide This guides old and some of the links may be invalid, but tis a really good guide that covers a lot of things and is a good & recommended read, especially if your a total Android noob. I have a link to our fastboot guide below in the Unlock the Bootloader section, and the driver is automagically installed the first time you plug your STOCK phone into a Windows PC. Myth Tools can do all this as well, but you SERIOUSLY need to learn the manual way before using the all-in-one tools -- and that's for any device\system\OS\phone\PC\etc...If you know the manual way then you'll be better suited to fixing issues on your own if the all-in-one fails
You'll also want to visit this thread and read up on RSD. Keep in mind that that thread was made after our bootloaders were unlocked so you can't do the CMW swap or downgrade to ICS, but it does contain the links to RSD and a Windows Driver Guide so its well worth reading.
Rooting this Beast
The first thing you're gonna want to do is root your phone. We have three methods available to us. One method is ICS only and the other two for Jellybean -- One is Linux exclusive and the other works on both Linux and Windows. I'm not gonna tell ya how to do them, there are threads for that and here they are.
ICS ONLY
Linux Samba Root Method
Motochopper Root Method
Staying Stock and using SafeStrap
By now you're probably wanting to flash a rom...but we're not there yet. Now is where you have to make a crucial decision -- Go with SafeStrap Recovery, Stock Roms, and limited support from us; OR, Unlock the bootloader, flash a new bootlogo, flash CWM, flash a custom rom. If you go with SafeStrap/Stock, install SSR and download the stock fastboot that's the same as the system on your phone if something goes wrong. I can't give a whole lot of SSR info since I didn't use it very much (maybe 2 weeks tops if that), you'll have to refer to the SSR thread for more SSR help and info. You only be able to flash stock based roms without custom kernels with this method. Please be aware that this isn't supported by us anymore since all the AHD power users run unlocked bootloaders and custom roms.
SafeStrap Recovery Thread
Unlock the Bootloader
I'll start of by telling you the ONE & ONLY downside to unlocking the bootloader -- you will lose warranty. If you're phone is covered for things like water damage, broke screen, major breaks, then you can just break the phone to the point where they won't be able to tell if its unlocked or not and the not being covered under warranty is a non issue. And if you need to do a warranty or return, make damn sure you break your phone in a way covered. Easiest was is to splice a 110V wall plug with a Mini USB and fry the board...all ya gotta say is it quit working...Now that that's been said I'll go on to the meat and potatoes.
You want to first visit the Unlock thread and read it as well as my fastboot guide sticked under Android General. Between those two sources all the minor tidbits are already covered.
Unlock Thread
Fastboot Guide
Just A Good Source For Info
What to do next???
Provided you actually read all of the above you should have a decent understanding of what to do and what not to do. You're gonna want to first start off by flashing CWM. See the Fastboot Guide linked just above this... Once installed do a Full Backup of your stock rom and place a copy of that on your PC for safe keeping. Now you are free to have some fun and start flashing all the roms you want.
Myth Tools
Thie Myth Team has kindly made us a nice little script that can do most of the rooting, unlocking, fastboot flashes, etc. I haven't mentioned yet, and almost didn't at all because you NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING POSTED ABOVE BEFORE YOU USE THIS TOOL. The tool itself works just fine, but if you're not properly set up bad things can happen and we're tired of answering posts that start with "I used Myth Tools and"....I'm essentially a noob who didn't bother to read and study before playing with my Shiny New Phone. IF adb is properly woking, IF you're using the proper fastboot, and IF you bothered to run it as root/admin the you're gonna have a good time.

And if it becomes unstickied I'll get it stickied back....not all of us WANT to unlock the bootloader or CAN unlock the bootloader (work/military/etc). For those cases we need them to have a recovery option available. Hashcode updated the instructions to include locked bootloaders only as well as Mattlgroff adding unlocked bootloaders only in the CWM thread. It can't be made any more clear than that.
We have clear, precise, and correct instructions for most things around here. We all answer questions when asked and we're generally nice to new users; though we will flame if a question has been asked too many times . Most of the information is either stickied or linked in the sticked posts. If someone is in of a hurry, stupid, or didn't read the instructions, faqs, guides, and OP's then its on them. For the few things that might not be in the stickied posts, a quick search will usually find what's needed.
That cartoon clearly explains this point.
It doesn't need to be stickied. Because of all the new guys thinking that's the only thing to use. It's better just being mentioned in your guide. That way if they need to use it they can use your link.

I am rooted and bootloader unlocked and I recently flashed xenon HD. But the issue is that my GPS wont work no matter how long I wait (Worked like dream on flash JB though). Also i cant make my laptop to recognize my phone ( yeah i did turn on the USB debugging mode)
So i went through the forums and I got to know that I have to flash stock ICS and then again flash a custom ROM to make it work. So searched around for stock ICS firmware for ATT and got this file 7.7.1Q-144_MB886_MR1-22_SIGNED_CFC.xml.zip. Now the page where I got this info says that I have to edit the xml file and then flash it.
I have Mythtools working, so all I have to do is to use the option to flash firmware and place this zip in respective folder ?
P.S : I intend to use HOLOBLUR ROM by younggun2008. Since it is on 4.1.2 I am wondering If flashing it directly will solve the purpose or I still have to go back to ICS.

So what term did you Google? Because I seriously doubt you've tried. Anyway, if you do decide to unlock the bootloader, promise me you'll backup your TA partition first. Don't even Google for that, just browse the XDA Z1 forums. I promise you you'll find the links you're after.
You say you googled it...This is the only way to do it

As for wanting to pay someone to do it for you, please read this

then you will be better at doing it for yourself

i find a lot of the information on the forum to be confusing and spend hours and hours trying to get my head around something which would take someone 10 secs to do if they a proper developer.. i was asking for help, if you didn't want to provide any then don't comment on the page.. i don't need your sarcastic links.. i don't have time for it. i want to learn and understand how to do this for my self, but i am better with some live chat help instead of someone just doing it for me.. i was more then willing to donate for the use of your time.. but you insist i just want the goodies out the bag without knowing where the bag came from.. please learn to be more respectful and give help if you have time.

I just provided you with help.
Look at the link I gave you, its not sarcastic, it takes you to the site where you unlock your bootloader.
I also spend a lot of my time on here helping people, and many people have helped me. Apologies if you think I was time wasting, I am just trying to get you going on the right track without leading you by the nose. Trust you learn more by doing it yourself, finding out by yourself and asking for guidance is the best way.

its not just as simple as googling, i asked if my bootloader can be unlocked and if i can take root control of the latest firmware? it would take a developer less then 10 secs to say or no to this question. if you look up at the last post i attached a screenshot showing my phone doesn't have a unlocked boot loader.

OK no bootloader unlock for you then.
Also, the firware you are on cannot be rooted.
You need to flash a .534 FW (Find them in the mega collection int he general section) and flash it on flashtool from here. Then you can root it using kingo.
If you want to upgrade to the latest FW then you will need to install dual recovery (Look in the original dev section) then flash a pre rooted rom from the dev section.

Our point is that asking such questions is just cluttering up the forums and wasting peoples time since the answers are easily available by browsing the stickied topics (or searching for that matter). If we just answer all of your "10 second questions", then we set a standard where it's OK to post a topic like this, and as a result we will likely end up with hundreds of topics asking the same simple question as this one. It's just not an appealing idea and so we meet questions like this with a bit of resistance in order to set a more maintainable and educationally conductive standard.
Do you understand my point?

But actually, the most common reason for locking bootloaders is to stop the customer from unlocking the bootloader, finding a hack to unlock the baseband and switching carriers, it makes sense that with a carrier locked device the bootloader isn't unlockable.

Yes, but you can sim unlock and still have the bootloader unlockable, and vice versa.

They include all of the code groups, header files and checksums as well as a RAM Downloader for all of the device partition images in a single file and flashed from the legacy boot loader enumerated as a flash device.
The new format for all dual core Motorola devices is zip archive of fastboot images and an XML file that can be used with RSD lite to flash in a single operation or flashed as individual images using the fastboot binary and DLLs in the Android SDK from the fastboot boot loader and enumerated as an ADB device.
These are entirely different modes of access and operation and SBF is both wrong and a misnomer for the firmware files for current devices.
The fast boot interface provides far more flexibility and safety for flashing than the old flash interface and avoids all kinds of problems that would arise from managing and updating he firmware on newer chipset devices.
It is an extremely important distinction to make and understanding to have about how these phones work.
Please stop using SBF when referring to XML.zip files.
The current acronym for Motorola firmware files is FXZ and means Full XML ZIP file.".SBF, XML.zip and tar.gz" are Official Motorola file extensionsQ13: Can I use the Droid Bionic, without activating with a carrier (WiFi only)?Yes, see Bypassing the JB Activation Screen of any Motorola Device*Forum Rules | New Users Guide | XDA Tour | Report Posts
I just pulled out my previous Droid Bionic to give to a friend and it has Android v2.3.4. It doesn't appear to be rooted but I think I may have done it when I was using it, but SU rights aren't available.
Details
Android v2.3.4
System Version 5.9.905.XT875.verizon.en.US
Baseband Version CDMA_N_04.07.02R LTEDC_U_07.1F.00
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-g4fc328e
[email protected] #1
Build number 5.5.1_84_DBN-74
Webtop Version WT-1.3.0-108_DBN-24
I want to wipe this phone to factory and root it but not install any custom ROMS, just get it working for my friend who needs a phone. I would like to remove any bloat ware but that's not absolutely critical, just prevent it from being locked by Verizon, although it's going to be used on the Straight talk system.
I went through several of the forums but I'm not sure what I need to do to accomplish this?
Any suggestions or pointers would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks for any help!

wipe data in recovery
Thanks sd_shadow
I did all the wipes and didn't help what so ever ......but I did fix it as it turns out it wasnt a software issued it was hardware issue jejeje I was about to kill the thing and a friend came in with some tools so one thing let to another and we figured that the front camera(and speaker maybe) where creating a short in the system so I removed the peace (it's real simple) and h...f.. s...... it booted right up without any hassle
Hope someone that needs this tip will read it and save a lot of pain killers lol.
Locked myself out of my old Droid Bionic and now stuck in fastboot mode
I recently found my old Bionic in my nightstand drawer and wanted to see what was on it. It was locked by a pattern lock which apparently I didn't remember correctly and it's not accepting my Google login. I went to the phones menu (power and volume down buttons) but somehow I got it stuck in AP Fastboot screen. I can't get it out of that screen and if I let it boot normally then I am locked out. Is there any way to still get to the data off the phone or get it unlocked so I can see if it's even worth it?
Thanks all.

OTA updates on unlocked bootloader 5.1
I've got a turbo that I unlocked using sunshine and put on twrp and SuperSU. Now it keeps downloading an update and I can't seem to stop it. While I can delete the downloaded file it keeps coming back and giving the full screen "update ready" prompt.
Unless I am mistaken I should not take the OTA. I tried the FOTAkill.apk route but that hasn't stopped it from downloading the update file.
What can I do at this point? It is driving me crazy. I don't really want a different ROM as I like the stock moto feature and don't want to kill camera performance.
Thanks!
Put a .bak at the end of the apk. Then reboot
Just to be clear I should put that at the end of the OTA .apk after it downloads?
No your phone already has the apk on it and by adding the .bak to the end your phone will no longer look for updates. I feel foolish for not mentioning that CF does amazing work with the stock based ROM, it's definitely worth checking out. I have had zero issues with his rom and am thankful he shares his work with us because my phone just keeps running better and better. Thank you CF!
It seems to have worked! Thank you!
anybody know how to downgrade to .44 from .49???
Unfortunately you can't.
Bootloader and root
I have been trying to find a reliable means to unlock my bootloader so i can root my droid turbo. Unfortunately i found this site after ota updates that i thought were manditory to keep my phone running smoothly. Now that i realize my noob mistake everything i have been finding seems to indicate its too late to fix anything now. my build is past the 44_44 is there a way to unlock the bootloader even a paid way would work for me as long as it will work. Im a bit reluctant to spend money on things im not possitive will work especially since unlocking bootloaders and rooting is frowned upon by some. im also worried that if i purchase something that doesnt work ill be unable to get a refund due to the nature of what i am purchasing. If anyone can offer ideas that i havnt considered to unlock my bootloader or maybe even root without it i would greatly appreciate it. even if there are some experimental things i could try id be willing to donate if the process works to accomplish what i am trying to do. thanks in advance and if there is no way to do this i understand fully.

Thanks for the reply. The sunshine app keeps force closing during the testing phase. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck.

Su4tl-49 build number
XT1254 hardware SKU
Android version 5.1
I know my build and kernel are past the version that the bootloader is currently for, which is why I'm trying to find another way

Turbo now 3G
Please be kind, have a Droid Turbo on Page Plus, all stock, running fine for a few months with 4G. Yesterday I thought I would be really smart and do the *22890 programming. Now I have a 3G Turbo. Customer service saying they can be of no help, "I shouldn't have used the programming on my 4G device." Is there a fix to return the Turbo to 4G? My apologies if this is the wrong place for this question.

I don't know the answer but I don't believe the Turbo required special programming (like some older Motorola phones) to work with Pageplus .
So the issue is the on the Phone or On the sim card.
Guess I would reflash the firmware with RSD Lite, if that doesn't fix it, get a new sim card.
Another option, swap sim cards with someone else, you don't need to tell Page plus, just needs to be a nano sim compatible phone
Ether the sim car works in other phones or not, I switch devices fairly often, and have used the current sim card in 6+ devices (really have't kept track)
What system version/ build version is on the phone?

Was told by Page Plus the programming was not for a 4G device, that I turned it into a 3G device. The system version is 23.21.49.quark_verizon.verizon.en.US.vzw, and the build is SU4TL-49. Thanks for your response!

I'm sure Pageplus customer service has no idea how to flash the firmware, or what that does.
The bootloader is locked? if yes just flash the SUTL-49 firmware with RSD Lite

If the bootloader is unlocked you could try just installing the STUL-49 radio in TWRP
