[TWRP][RECOVERY] ODIN .TAR (2.7.1.0) for I9505G GE Galaxy S IV - Galaxy S 4 i9505G Android Development

Hey Everyone the folks over at TEAM WIN RECOVERY PROJECT put together an image file for TWRP recovery for the I9505G. I take NO CREDIT for this but I did convert the image into an ODIN flashable .TAR file because an ODIN tar was not available on TWRP website. I have tested and flashed this on my Locked Bootloader and Stock Google Edition Galaxy S IV running 4.2.2. Please make sure you Unlock the Bootloader if you want to Root your phone, the Root will not work if you try to install it from Recovery on reboot.
As Always I am not responsible if you brick your phone doing any modification
HOW TO INSTALL
Open up ODIN and click on PDA
Select Recovery.tar from the attachment you downloaded
Make sure ONLY "AUTO REBOOT" is checked
Click START
After you see the PASS on Odin and "Removed" Unplug
Power Off or Pull the battery
Use Volume Up and the Power till you see the SAMSUNG logo and let go of all. Wait for TWRP to boot, it took a little longer so your not stuck, just be patient.

UPDATED TWRP IMAGES AND .TAR ODIN FILES http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/jgedlte
-----------------------------------------
KNOWN ISSUES For 2.6.0.0 & 2.6.1.0: 8/31/2023 ( post any help info on further releases ) UPDATE 7/21/2014 I have not been using the I9505G for awhile now so I am not sure of any issues or bugs on the latest releases please post them in the thread.
I have used TWRP from the Team Win site and the Odin package image I put together here and I have noticed and reported 2 bugs. The first is you can get stuck on TWRP screen booting into recovery, just pull the battery or reflash again until it boots up. The second is that when you restore sometimes you will get a FAIL immediately, don't panic, (1) reflash a ROM, and Restore or (2), pull battery and reboot back into recovery and Restore or (3) wipe and then Restore.
This build has some minor issues but if you follow this guide you will be OK.
Thanks to the Folks at TEAM WIN RECOVERY PROJECT and Chahk
MJ (attached file is for 2.6.0.0) PLEASE DO NOT USE ATTACHED RECOVERY PLEASE USE THE LINK ABOVE FOR OFFICIAL TWRP RECOVERY

I did not try to do a Nandroid this was the image from Team Wins website so I don't think you will have any backup issues like some did with the I9505 image. Goo Manager is always the best option but a .tar comes in handy at times that is the only reason I converted their image.

This is big news, but the lack of replies has me worried. I need more brave souls to flash before me.
BTW, did this trip your counter MJ?

Apologies if I am completely wrong - but does this mean that if I use this recovery my phone will be 100% identical to the official S4GE? I assume that would make a lot more stable and efficient than the current dumbs we have been leaked?
Thanks in advance!

From my understanding this is just a TWRP recovery. It's not something that will make your phone a stock S4GE because this is a custom recovery. It's a custom recovery for the S4GE GT-I9505G.

Odin is easier for most Windows users because of its GUI, using standard USB drivers, and not having to mess around with Command Prompt.

I have used odin to flash this TAR File and it passes but when I boot into my recovery it is still the stock recovery. My bootloader in unlocked but Secure Boot is Enabled. I think the secure boot may be why it is not flashing correctly. If so how to I disable secure boot?

This is a known issue with TWRP even if you download the image directly. Keep rebooting to recovery it will work...eventually. I already submitted this to Team Win.

If there is no difference between that .img and the one downloaded from goo.manager, Its freezing under advanced settings. Cant restore defaults. It froze on me trying to do a back up. Im sure there are several other issues as I have not had a chance to review the thread in general section yet, but just a few results from my own experience.
EDIT: I stand corrected, I thought I was getting freezes, I let it sit and it finally completed.

google now made my bluetooth act funky when trying voice commands, tried to use bootstrap to recover my backup and it failed on system.
I am now doing a fastboot restore
you have been warned.
I know the feeling...been through that with my Atrix, Bionics, RAZR, etc...thank God for the fast boot files! I'll grab those now...
Any additional details would be helpful. Did you try to flash the restore to stock file before trying to flash your back up? And did you use bootstrap to make the original back up or safestrap?
Thanks

I made the backup with the razr bootstrap, tried to restore the backup, it failed on restoring system.
I restored data manually (advanced) then it would go to the red M screen, then a blank screen with the backlight on.
I tried booting into stock recovery and a factory reset, didn't work.
Fastboot did though

I flashed the mikeyxda's version 7 online/offline with Safestrap to my safe system and it caused my safe system to boot loop. Unsafe system is working ok however.

How did you flash mikeyxda's version 7 online/offline to your stock unsafe ROM? Did you install a ROM to the safe side and flash that? When I attempt to flash a zip to the unsafe I get the warning that I cannot flash a .zip in unsafe mode.

[ODIN][N8013]Stock Kernel and Recovery Images

This post will contain N8013 stock kernel and recovery images. For UEALGB these were dumped from a device that was rooted using the "root injection of /system" approach. For UEALH2, they are simply extracted from the Kies dump at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847706 so that you can get a stock kernel or recovery without downloading 1GB of files.
If you flash any of these using Odin, they should not trigger your flash counter. Note that for some reason, flashing these in Heimdall will trigger the counter (unlike Heimdall on most other devices).
Pardon for some ignorance. What should be the steps to follow in order to root from an updated to latest OTA update stock Rom on a 32gb USA version? Do I need to flash the kernel, or just recovery should be ok?

Why don't u ask this in the root thread?
Here is what you should do:
Root Via CWM (method 2 in the root thread)
1. Download and put the superuserzip on your internal memory on your device
2. In odin uncheck auto reboot and load the cwmrecovery tar in the pda slot
3. Start odin
4. Once finished boot directly into clockwork (volume up and power til the samsung screen then let go of power while holding volume up)
5. Use the volume rockers to scroll in clockwork cause its finicky and flash the superuser zip you put on your device.
6. reboot
7. Make sure you have root and touch screen and pen works
8. Download goo manager
9. In goo manager hit menu and hit the install recovery script
10. DONE
Have any problems odin back to a stock image and if things go bad flash entropys triangle away kernel and clear your binary count
Any chance you could update the thread to account for the updated kernel for the N8013, that adds support for exFAT?

I have the Canadian 8010 model, and installed the prerooted firmware that was provided. It didnt flash right the first time but the second time it did. Everything works great and Im rooted with CWM. The only thing I noticed is that it says I have the 8013 model now which is probably because of the firmware but its not a big deal.

You can't, but you can flash the entire H2 ODIN image from here (about 1GB):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847706
and not lose your data. You lose root though (which you can get again through the alternate recovery method)

[HOW TO]Update to 4.4.2 NAE w/Root while Keeping MF9 Bootloader w/ Lock Screen Fix

THANKS To Unknownforce, Sac23, Phil3759, runwithme, cmonsterf50, fgr, tallblazer124 and Chainfire!
For Lock Screen FIX Only Skip to Bottom of OP. You can Also Skip Flashing MK2 if you decide to do it this way.
This HOW TO will help you update your Sprint S4 to Stock Rooted NAE including NAE modem while keeping the MF9 bootloader.
MDC, MDL, MF9, MJA, MK2 and NAE are versions of the stock OS released by Samsung. MDC was first then MDL, MF9, MJA,MK2 and now NAE.
The recent MJA/MK2/NAE update was major in terms of firmware in that Knox was incorporated. (firmware on the GS4 is the bootloader, recovery and modem/radio. the ROM is the OS) Currently, once you update to the new MJA, MK2 or NAE bootloader you can't go back.
Why would you go back? Well Knox is a pain in the a$$ and trips the flash counter in the bootloader, which will most likely void your warranty. For crack flashers this is a nightmare.
Right now staying on the MF9 bootloader and flashing the stock NAE Rooted ROM from Unknownforce gives you no lock screen security settings. I have found a workaround that lets you keep the MF9 BL and flash the NAE Rooted ROM with lock screen security working. To go any further you must have NOT accepted the latest OTA and are still on MF9 Bootloader.
I am not responsible for anything happening to your phone. Proceed at your own risk. Basic knowledge in flashing via Odin and custom recoveries is required. If you follow this guide word for word you will not have any issues. Read entire post and download all files needed before starting.
ALL FILES Needed:
Odin 3.07(Other versions may work. This is what I use): http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1168421&d=1341114315
NAE Modem/Firmware - http://d-h.st/zWf
Philz 6.08.9 Recovery (last one I tested) or later - http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/jflte
Stock MK2 Rooted ROM Odex - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23321874045862533
Stock NAE Rooted ROM - http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407572159 OR Sac23's v3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673380
SD Card Write Fix - https://www.mediafire.com/?tpnv6l67wdl98i2
Hot Spot Mod (Choose NAE Odex) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2653666
How To Video: thanks wwjoshdew!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoM5P93m-yg
Step 1 Update modem and firmware to NAE
Download NAE modem and NAE firmware (with knox removed) thanks to Unknownforce (be sure to unzip before use)
Follow his instructions for installation from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338919
Step 2: Install Philz Recovery
Download Philz recovery version 6.08.9 MD5 (last one I tested)
Turn off your S4. Wait for a full power down. Boot into download mode (hold power and volume down, then volume up) Connect USB cable and boot Odin.
Using Odin v3.07 flash Philz Advanced CWM recovery in PDA mode with AUTO REBOOT UNCHECKED. When it says RESET hold the power button, and as soon as the device turns off hold volume up to boot into the new recovery.
Step 3: NAE ROM Install and Workaround for Lock Screen Security Settings
1. Back up Apps with Titanium Backup
2. Boot into Philz Recovery
3. Factory Reset>Wipe to install a new ROM
4. Install the Stock MK2 Odex Rom
5. Boot the Stock MK2 ROM. I did not set up any of my google accounts nor wifi, I just skipped until the pre-setup was finished. I then let the Sprint stuff install.
6. Go to lockscreen settings and set up a pattern or pin lock.
7. Reboot to recovery and wipe System, Cache, Preload and Dalvik Cache. DO NOT WIPE DATA.
8. Install the NAE Stock Rooted Rom from Unknownforce OR Sac23's v3 ROM
9. Reboot and profit.Your lock screen settings should now be functional.
10.Flash SD Card write fix if needed. (most likely you will)
11.(Optional) Install Hotspot mod.
12. Install Busybox and ROM Toolbox from Google Play. Fix permissions In ROM Toolbox go to (Run Script) > (Fix Permissions).
*****Alternate Lock Screen Fix*****
Thanks to @tallblazer124 for this much easier way to get lock screen settings:
Another fix for lock screen which is very quick, is use root explorer or a similar app and edit the buildprop in the system folder.
You can just add # before
security.mdpp=None
in build prop and it will work.
The entry will then look like this
#security.mdpp=None
Then restart your phone and you should have all the lock screen options.
I am now trying to add recovery, but it doesn't work. I tried so many times, it doesn't work for me. I did the 3x , plus the battery pull. I also tried both recovery, still it didn't stick. I will just wait.

Try this. After you flash a custom recovery, instead of doing the battery pull right away, hold down the power button until the device turns off. Then do your USB cable pull and battery pull. I had to do this for a friends S4.

Congrats man on getting everything with the MDL update.
Since i know a lot of people including myself are having problems getting this to stick, wouldnt it be easy if you could share your rom so the developers could use that as a base since you have everything working .
Just a thought not trying to step into anyones toes or anything. Again congrats on the update

Yes. Since it does not include kernel and modem you should be fine. Do nand backup first though

Everything worked flawlessly bro! great job on this post.
I must admit the tricky part is getting the recovery to stick but once that happens the rest is cake! Good looks
Too kool of you to leave your nand backup so some of us who are too lazy, or want to avoid odin can restore your back up!
Now, can I use TWRP to restore or do I have to figure out how to change recovery to CWM?

Not sure. I havn't used TWRP. I'm going to guess and say yes? I guess just try it. If it doesn't work load Shabby's or SexTape's CWM recovery. They are both easy to install if you can follow directions
Worked great, no issues. It all went through the first try for me.
We just have to get this nag permanently fixed

The weird thing is, I have never had an issue with getting recovery to stick. Even after flashing MDC, taking update, then ODIN Shabby Recovery. Dunno why all the fuss. Maybe different versions of ODIN. I'm using 3.07 I think. Great write-up though.
Is it possible to just update the modem without touching anything else?

Flash CWM in current recovery and your good. I (personally) wouldn't try restoring a nand from a different recovery. If there was a newer version of the recovery and you have a backup under and older older version, you should be good. Your still within the same recovery.

UPDATE: I was asked for a copy of a nand backup of my rom. (Link Below) Here is Stock MDL Rooted with updated Modem, Shabby's kernel, MDL Hotspot mod and MDL Reboot Menu mod. (Data has been wiped) If you restore this in your custom recovery, make a back up of your current rom first. After restoring my backup, do an advaced restore of your data only.

Good post. Thanks for the help. I just wanted to clarify that if people restore your nand it won't install the modem. I see you mentioned the modem so just wanted to clear things up in case people tried to do it just to get the modem.

No you can't, you'll need odin to flash any custom recovery first. The stock recovery will just report a signature error.

screen malfunction at startup
I flash this CWM over my N5120,
I am not sure if I get anything wrong in the procedure.
However, everytime I start the machine. It get a screen malfunction.
Cwm and download mode work fine.
Then, I decided to flash back N5120 rom from sammobile thr. odin.
Screen malfunction still exist and I found out that snote will FC no matter which version of rom I flash.
Anyone has any idea on the issue?
How should I fix it?
Thank you very much for help.
May i know how you install this? Newbie here

Um, that s a long story.
First, I flashed CWM6.03.2.
And I found a bit strange at boot up. The screen blink at bootup.
Then, I tried Custom CWM 6.x - N5100 / N5110 / N5120 - Ex#6.
I also restored the rom from sammobile at the same time.
Screen malfunction at boot.
But, everything works fine, except 2 things.
1) CWM factory reset didn't work.
2) Snote FC
I try every cwm in the forum. Nothing change until.......
I flashed PhilZ 5.03.0 and try something like "clean up to install rom" or "prepare to install clean rom" inside the recovery.
After reboot, my machine bricked.
DaDaDa, I should be the first one to brick N5120 in xda because I flashed everything without thinking.
Right now, when i press down+power right now, the machine directly jump to download mode without asking.
However, odin wont detect.
It is not the connection issue. It can connect my note2.
I am now waiting usb jig from ebay and hope THE MIGHTY JIG will at least bring me the real download mode.
emwno said I might have soft bricked the bootloader.
I will keep posting on final result about jig, in case some newbie like me flash everything they saw.
N5100, stock N5100XXBMD1_N5100XEZBMC3_N5100XXBMC8, rooted by framaroot, recovery applied and seems working. Backup done by EFSPro, donation sent (TID:*644C). Terminating connection.

Press, hold, shake, upside down???
Okay...here's an extremely stupid question: How do you boot into CWM recovery manually on the Note 8? I've tried every button combo I can think of and haven't been successful.
EDIT: Nevermind! Got it. My bumper case must have been interfering with the volume up button. Duh!
Added version for the GT-N5120 , tested by AndyGod and reported to be working.
363 downloads and only 7 people find it worth to click the thanks button? Strange?
Works well on my n5100
Thanks Civ

LOL!
Great job Civato, work good, and i like full backup
I'm on stock rooted using framaroot. Put my note in download mode, and flashed the tar file through odin. Now, I can reboot into recovery but I can't access anything on my internal storage. Any pointers on what I could be doing wrong? Do I need an external sd card for flashing/nandroid backups etc?
Edit: Looks like its because I have the note encrypted. Will decrypt and then try again.
Is there any way to make it work on portrait mode???
by the way, nice job mate!!!
Can I use mobile odin to install this?
a few folks have, but there is no guarantee that it will work for everyone...

Did you use the recovery or pda slot of mobile Odin?
i dont recall Mobile odin asking you for a "slot" choice; using "regular" Odin, PDA slot would be the proper choice..
here is chainfires post explaining it..

updating twrp?

First off I'd like to apologise if this is the wrong forum.
I'm using an old version of twrp on my i9305, 2.3.3.0 to be exact, and I would like to update it to the newest version but I'm not sure how. I've looked on their website and just found it confusing; goomanager isnt supported, it couldn't find the file when I tried using terminal emulator and I couldn't get a response from odin for some reason.
So what's the easiest way to update it for a newb like me to update it?
I believe I used the s3 toolkit last time but I'm not sure which phone to select because I'm using sentinalrom and all the options seemed to be for stock phones. No option for 4.3 phones.
Web site downloads and either cwm zip or Odin tar file .
Sorry for the stupid question but I've downloaded the cwm zip and was wondering whether I have to install cwm or can I flash it using twrp?

First step read the faqs and guides before you brick your phone .
Above points to fail to understand the very basics .

I've read the FAQs and can't find anything relating to this. Hence the reason I asked.
Thanks for the useful post though.

The basics would show that cwm is a recovery and twrp is a recovery . You flash through recovery .
So you have more than one copy of your EFS folder backed up good .

But it's realy easy to DL latest twrp tar image from official site.
Install mobile odin and flash it from there.
EASY!

OK that is one solution.
But I don't have "mobile Odin"...
how can I convert the TWRP IMG or TAR into a flashable ZIP?
Or can anyone confirm what the correct ADB command is? (I don't think the command from TWRP is correct)
thanks
Here you can find a download for twrp.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46874790
It is attached in the 3rd post.
There is a *.tar and a *.zip.

I wish it was this easy. Every time I try using mobile Odin it crashes, says settings stopped and boots into TWRP... I presume this isn't meant to happen at least?
I think I'll just have to give up. I've tried everything and nothing works for me.

I decided to give it one last try with Odin on my pc and I dont know why but it worked!!! I have no idea why it didn't before, perhaps it was a corrupted file but that doesn't explain why none of the other ways worked either. But the main thing is I'm now running the latest version.
Thanks for all your help everyone.

I needn't have bothered tbh. The only reason I wanted to update the recovery was because most roms wont install on my phone, which is the main reason I'm using sentinelrom, and I had hoped it was because I was using an old recovery but they still wont install.
This phone really is crap. I didn't have any of these troubles with my old x10. It might not have had the power of the s3 but I could flash things at least.
there are two kind of files you can download from the goo
the img file and zip file
the img file is for download mode and the zip file is for recovery mode
you can use mobile ordin or ordin in PC to flash the img file,or use the old version TWRP to flash the new version in recovery mode
Flashify is another way to update TWRP after downloading the recovery .img manually on your phone. Just be sure to install the right one for your device.
Apologies for the reply to a thread that's been dormant for a month.
