Nexus 4 Chromecast issue - Google Chromecast

I got my Chromecast today, while watching some videos using my Nexus 4 Android 4.3 to Chromecast . I experienced lock up's, after the screen timeout. I can't get into the lock screen. So I have to reboot again..by long pressing the power button of my phone. The streamed content is still working while doing the reboot.

N4 Blackout Issue
I'm having the same issue. I'm on a bone stock N4 running Android 4.3 from the factory image.
However, it is an interesting development that the Chromecast continues to run even when our device is off... I'm betting that soon we'll see a crack to running the full Chrome OS on the Chromecast.

Why is that an interesting developlment? That is how its designed... you arent 'sharing' content from your device to the chromecast. The CC is pulling the content directly from the network itself.

No where did they ever say that the Chromecast could run without another device once it started... So since it was never announced or talked about, that DOES make it an interesting development... !

I believe it was mentioned in the demo. Once a stream was started from Google Music, YouTube or Netfix the phone/tablet is no longer needed. They mentioned that we would see no battery drain as well. This is because the phone/tablet is not doing the steaming. Essentially your phone is just a remote. Just like a TV ... You find the channel you want and the remote is no longer needed.
I too am experiencing the lock up when the phone is put to sleep during streaming. I think it is related to the lock screen. If you push the power button once and wait a while you see the new lock screen that shows up during streams.

same here with N4 w/ 4.3 ...

Has anyone figured out how to fix this yet? It's really annoying.

Same Here
Bone stock, unrooted 4.3 here. It's frustrating. Had to restart N4 5 times so far in last few hours. I am not even Casting anything now still the lockout.

I am having the same issues. Chromecast was working fine with Android 4.2 but after getting the 4.3 update my device will randomly lock up if I am casting from Netflix. It happened once with Play Movies but so far it has only been consistently happening with Netflix while using stock Android 4.3

Happening to me too. Seems like an awfully big bug to let out the door. Still remains unfixed. Since this is the only device I have to control Netflix on the Chromecast, does anyone know if Netflix in Silverlight/Chrome supports chromecasting?

I was having the issue and just wiped the entire thing and loaded the stock 4.3 odexed rom with busy box etc. Once i did this every time i would reboot i would get stuck at the google boot screen. Anyway, jumped into recovery and fixed permissions and all was well. That was after another 2 wipes and reflashes. So not sure what really changed, but thought i would thought my experience out here for someone to pick apart.

Yep having the same issue here, glad to hear it's not only me I guess.

The issue is with 4.3 and not just with Chromecast. The N4 seems to lock up when video is/was playing and the screen goes to sleep. You get a sleep of death. I've experienced it with Netflix, as have many others. I've seen reports of it with other video apps as well. And these were NOT Chromecast users, just regular users of their Nexus 4s.
So it's a bug in 4.3 that Google needs to fix, or possibly can be fixed by the developers of the problematic apps.

I've discovered if I plug my phone in and activate the dock screensaver then it prevents my phone from going into sleep of death mode. Not ideal but it is a solution for anyone that has a charger near their TV

4.2 more like 4.0 than 4.1

Hi all anyone else noticed that the 4.2 update seems to make the N7 worse not better compared to 4.1.2. To me it feels like a step back compared to the speed of Jelly Bean 4.1. It's like project Butter never happened to my device
I've seen a few scattered reports wondering if everyone is seeing this, for instance start up NFS:MW then switch to say Gmail or any other app, the entire thing starts to crawl for me. Problem wasn't present in 4.1.2
Considering reflashing but cant see that making a massive difference I did a full wipe before upgrading.
Thoughts all?
I am still on 4.1 with paranoid..will wait about a few weeks to read how is working..i am happy with curent setup so dont see to rush something "unknown" ..and i see that Bluetooth native tethering does not work which i use for connecting with my phone internet.

Same to me.
Updated via OTA on a rooted device with bootloader relocked. Enabled a second user.
OTA and no problems.
What made you think loading the factory image was the correct thing to do? Surely letting the device deal with it is the best route...

AHH now then, I've got 2 additional user accounts setup, 3 in total.. Could that be the issue, android is monitoring these other accounts even when not in use. I have two accounts with full access and another account sat at welcome.
Anyone else confirm that if you have multiple user accounts the N7 becomes sluggish switching apps?

I'll go out on a sturdy limb here and say.. Because it's the factory image provided by manufacture of the OS? That would seem like a right thing to do huh? Just like when you want to start fresh with Windows you wipe your drive and install via the factory image (DVD in Windows case).. It's 100% of the time a sure fire method the installation you have is the installation the manufacture intended.. Sometimes updates don't turn out all peachy and full of rainbows like they are intended to be.. So, some people take this into consideration and opt for a fresh install instead.

And there is nothing wrong with that. I agree with you.. 4.2 is a step backwards in Android development by a lot.. 4.2 spent 30 entire minutes on my device before I re-partitioned it back to a 4.1.2 file system (getting rid of the user account folder tree) and put 4.1.2 back on it and it'll stay that way until development catches up.

yup i like playing NS:MW and last night after the update the game slowed and stuttered like i was playing resident evil 4 on windows 95.
i think everyone soon will stop making ways to get to 4.2 and start concentrating on a guide for reverting back to 4.1 lmao
4.2 things i dont think i like:
the "edit" look lockscreen with 1 clock number bigger
the effects on games
no otg usb yet
the double notications windows
the update stole my working video cam effects and added a non-working photo-sphere mode....great

Agreed it does feel a bit slower. Opening apps and transitions don't feel as smooth as 4.1

Yeah it is a bit slower, no doubt. It's not just you. Hopefully 4.2.1 brings back the speed.

4.2 certainly "feels" slower to me. The transition on the running apps seems different but I can't tell if it has been updated or is just happening fractionally slower so I'm noticing the transition more. I notice that you get the screenshot and then fractionally later the icon slides in from the left. Has this always happened?
Certainly when tapping the power button to turn off the screen it seems to fade slower and the click noise happens fractionally later than I would expect, which suggests it is just a performance issue.
I have added one new user profile account which I suspect is part of the issue. Pretty happy with the update but roll on 4.2.1

It is definitely slower while the screen is turning off. I suspect adding another user has got something to do with the performance degradation. I really hope 4.2.1 solves these issues.

New Google OTA 15250

Looks like a new OTA is rolling out from google with build #15250 according to This reddit post. Once I get my hands on it, I will post any noticeable changes here.
Noticeable Changes:
Removal of v2mirrioring binary
Updated eureka_shell that prevents custom whitelisting
Addition of mdnsd service
Build version moved up to 1.4
New Kernel Loading Image (Now says Chromecast... instead of Loading Chromecast...)
Updated WiFi Drivers
Added bootloader boot/error images
New Image Signing keys?!
EDIT: *Retracted*
EDIT2: Source is dropped for most things, same place as usual: https://code.google.com/p/chromecast-mirrored-source/
Let this be a discussion thread for the new build. Has anyone seen the update yet?

It is really hard to notice changes to Chromecast updates easily. Most likely it is bug fixes and updates for the upcoming SDK. There could be some more apps coming soon and this is being done in preparation for that.

I'm betting the issues some had were not update related but related to Google Services being on the fritz that day.
Recieved the update earlier today. Not noticed any significant changes as yet, though connecting does seam faster as well as sending s stream from YouTube and Netflix. Not tried out Avia yet, but will be later today, will update with anything further I noticed. The main observations though is an overall speed improvement, though this could just be me imagining things not based on anything concrete.

I have my CC setup to go to US Netflix by blocking the DNS request and setting Unlocator's DNS's on my router. It has been working fine, but last night and tonight I have not been able to use Netflix on the CC - when I try the Netflix screen displays for a while and then it says "Unable to Connect at this time." I just noticed that it has updated to 15250. I'm not sure when the update happened but I'm concerned that it has broken our workaround...
EDIT: It is working now. I connected to the internet by watching a video on Youtube and then went back to Netflix and it worked, without changing any router settings.

Since I got the update, I cant cast my computer via Chrome. It just sits with a blank screen. Audio is cast, but no video. I've tried multiple computers. Trying to read up on it. The only issues I could find is a known router issue w/ upnp and the comcast router/modem combo. Wish I could go back. It was working great before.

The last Google Cast update was 3 weeks ago. It would of already updated automatically by now.
Oddly, I received the update last Friday and did not have issues.
Now today I am unable to cast a tab from my CPU and I am at a loss as to why.
I checked my router and everything looks correct, I have restated my CC twice and that has not fox the issue either.
Just going to wait and see if letting sit for a bit might fix whatever is wrong.

Only 720p video available on YouTube app?

Has any found a video that even plays in 1080p, let alone 2k on the YouTube app?
No matter what video I watch 720p seems to be the highest option available.
Same here. YouTube recently pushed an update earlier this week that removed the other resolutions. 1440p works on desktop via phone browser but is very choppy.

While I have been able to select 1080 & 1440 using your methods, it appears the resolution is now stuck on 720 regardless.
Take a closer look and see if your selections of high resolution actually are, because mine are not. Looks like YouTube/Google put the gabash on high resolution for now.

It doesn't make sense, the Phone is totally capable of doing 1080p and 1440p but Youtube won't allow we viewing it. My iPhone 6 Plus does 1080P without problem, I think event Google is admitting iPhone is better, so I will agree with Google to sick with my iPhone, Google made the App for both, and their own App on their own operation system do less feature, unless they have hard time to deliver that video, otherwise it makes no sense. Google makes me think Apple is better now.
I'm not sure why google went this route for android either. All my devices defaulted to 720p. Although on the note 4 the 720p is actually sharper than the 720p on my note 3. I'm assuming it's due to the better screen on the note 4.

root has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of "lag"; its what you install or delete/freeze after rooting that could be contributing to any "lag"

You should worry .... I never had ... I have had so many phone rooting since the G1 and never had device issues .... Just pay attention to what your doing to your device and you will be ok ... Because you can kill a phone less than 5 seconds ... Its simple .... Its up to you if wanna take the chances on Rooting .... Also rooting the phone doesn't make the phone slow its the Apps that you delete ...
im gonna give it a week. if all goes well with the device and no warranty issues i will root the phone. i understand the concept of rooting but with other phones you can return to stock. with this phone it sticks which creates a little caution with me naturally.

Sadly Screen mirroring does not work, only Audio gets routed and I gte a blank screen on the TV with chrome-cast connected, Any one else have this issue ? please advise

It was my understanding that while they added support for 4.4.2 devices, actually getting it to work was going to be hit or miss.

Yes that is true, Its a Hit or Miss, But I wanted to check if its a problem all Intel based devices are facing or not...

I would think the Intel units had more than enough power to do it but perhaps their HAL does not support it.
Mirroring screen does require some Kernel code to support it so it is possible you got 4.4.2 but the kernel was not coded for Screen Cast support.

Well there are options to look for...
You could try a custom Rom, See if a Custom Kernel is available. Both if available would be found here at XDA.
Best place to find it and get answers is over at the Venue8 section of XDA as thats where the development roms and Kernels would be and you might even find instructions to get casting to work without changing roms...

Please don't. You'd be wasting your time. MirrorEnabler is no different than the feature that Google provided. Some people are having reporting success after leaving their device on the black screen for a while. They say the video just magically comes up after a couple of minutes. Not quite sure why.

Found something very interesting .. When I hit the cast button .. It usually takes close to 5 minutes to start the casting .. But
I tried this trick.. I hit the cast button and then start the stop watch and the cast initiates in 30 seconds exactly.. I was able to replicate this several times.. Tried it on 2 Intel based tablets.. Same results
That sounds absolutely crazy, but you're absolutely right. The stopwatch trick works ! :good:
Tested wit ASUS MeMo Pad 7 (mod. ME572c with Intel z3560) . The screen was casted at 30 +/-3 seconds. Without the trick, it's total coincidence, when it starts.

HAHAH , Thanks for Testing it out bro. totally weird huh.. if we could just figure out whats stopping from it being cast instantly
Also just to clarify when u dont use the trick, it takes longer rite ????

Correctly working YouTube? Anyone?

This is more of a rant than anything. Does anyone have a good working YouTube app? I just noticed recently that the app will not play newly selected videos right away, it just plays the beginning of the Queue everytime you select a new video. Also if you stream to a chromecast, if you let the phone or tablet screen go off and then turn the device back on it will stop the video. I have 4 devices and three don't work right. The only one that works correctly is the Ascend mate 2. Huh? My damn Chinese device is the only one getting it right. Can't wait for the Huawei Nexus!

Never had one issue with YouTube. Multiple ROM's, AOSP or CM based. Even stock. ???

Probably a problem at your end, this is the first post afaik regarding this issue. Clear the data of the YT app or deinstall and reinstall the app if the first option doesn`t work.
Seems weird that 3 out of 4 fail and 1 of that failed 3 is stock on an asus tablet.
Sorry.....just bitter.....

And no need to bring race into a subject when you are sore. Especially when the Nexus 6 is a "chinese" phone also. Research on Lenovo, and look at the shipping threads here on XDA to see where Morotola shipped from directly from the plant.

Really? Everybody seems to hate the idea that one of the next nexus devices might be Huawei. Is it not Chinese made, making my statement true? I did not put it in quotes like you hence making it 'racist.' My post was not being racial in anyway. Stop being so sensitive. Wow....
I like the idea that it might be Huawei.....they got some good looking devices.

Good thing you edited out those racial statements earlier. We will just leave this as is. I don't want a Mod getting upset for any OP's subtle dislike of other nationalities.
Have a wonderful and safe weekend.
