Root isn't specific to android but I'm not sure how the actual process will work... I'd imagine it requires a jtag.

connecting a jtag port isn't difficult, the chromecast is only $35 too if something goes wrong. I'm hoping that the usb can function as a usb hub if it is hacked via jtag, if so then maybe we'll get a proper android rom and maybe a linux distribution.

Runs android..
So if it has the NDK we can run the XBMC app and still have the chrome cast system run in the background and have the best of both worlds. Awesomesauce.

It makes sense that it runs Android, it's a real OS that can run apps unlike Chrome OS. However, it would not make sense to call it Android as Android is a religion that is polarizing. No diehard Apple fan or even casual iPhone user would be caught dead with an Android device.
Chrome, on the other hand, is agnostic and works across platforms.
The name choice was political.

Chrome OS as found on a Chromebook has a few apps like a video player, they are mostly offline versions of webapps, but still standalone apps.

Define app.
I have a rdp app on my chromebook that I can use on networks without internet perfectly fine. My text editing app works smoothly even without network. The ssh client works well too.
And, unlike android, with dev mode enabled I can run any gnu/Linux app I want without installing a second os in a chroot.
I personally prefer chrome os over android. Having a real Linux os tends to come in handy.

So apparently the os is based on android, but with dalvik and everything else replaced by a chrome binary.
So, its android, but its not android at all (no android app will ever run on it without replacing the os with android)

Wireless Mirroring

Hello y'all,
I'm a school teacher and the school just bought me a Nexus7 and I LOVE IT! I'm here because I use Power Point everyday and I was wondering if there is an accessory or a way to connect my Tablet to my HDMI projector wirelessly, so I can slid through my solids on my tablet. Any help would be great.
Thanks Guys!
Mirroring just isn't possible on the N7 currently :crying:
can you use the bluetooth to do a remote desktop with a laptop that is hooked up to the projector?
just a suggestion
I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for but if you can get a computer connected to the projector and the n7 on the same network there are several good PC remote apps. I used andremote for a long time and was happy with it.

You can use Splashtop Remote Desktop from the Play store
Look at mirrorop in market.
U can mirror nexus on a PC, or on another tablet/one.
I mirrored my Xoom to nexus7 and had xoom connected to TV so I had the Xoom screen on my TV and my nexus 7 and full control of xoom from my 7.

Just a protocol, you need software and hardware that uses it.
Lot of good suggestions so far but they all require another expensive computer or tablet. The easy solution that being a simple hardware device that listens on WiFi and connects to an HDMI video device without another computer that the Nexus 7 can talk to.
For a teacher, business, home user, you plug this device into any HDMI video device and play, images, video, whatever you have on the screen.
It's coming, but not here yet.

Miracast is JUST a protocol. It is not an app, or a program. It is a standard that a number of hardware vendors are collaborating on. You need software and hardware that supports the protocol to use it.

Tegra 3 already supports miracast, just needs to be enabled in the FIRMWARE. Most tvs in 2013 will support it without hardware dongle but a dongle will be a available for your HDMI slot. No different than using mhl cable with HDMI cable except, oh wait, this solution is wireless...

Android TV Software

I know nothing about Android TV software, but I'm interested in buying an Ouya (already pre-ordered) for the sole purpose of installing Android and using it as an Android TV with gaming capabilities. This may seem like quite a stretch, I'm not sure.
Does Google share the source code for Android TV? Is anyone else interested in this or something similar?
Well, someone can try to port the Android TV Apps to Ouya, but we need the sources...
Hey ... i think about the same Project.
First of all we should wait if the first Ouya Devices shipped because i think at these time they will release the needing Sources.
If not we have "GPL Violation" .... so we should wait.
I will perfom the integrated "XBMC" with now support Live-TV in Combination with "tvheadend" Server but need help to get tvheadend compile and run under "Android-Kernel" (Tegra3). If some developer will help it would be great !!!
XBMC is already working on supporting OUYA so no worries there. It will probably be ready by the time OUYA consoles ship out.

Pwn Pad Build

For those of you who do penetration testing, InfoSec, or for the (greyhats), I'm planning on trying to recreate the Pwnie Express Pwn Pad as a side project. If you don't know what I'm referring to, take a look at the following link:
http://pwnieexpress.com/collections/pwn-pad/products/pwnpad
I would never pay $800 for a N7 but I will pay the $20 for the wifi adapter and then build my own!
I work full time and am a n00b when it comes to Android development so any help or testing offers are greatly appreciated.
Holy sh*t they really over price that :/
You would need a WiFi adapter capable of doing your task. Most WiFi adapters are not compatible with aircrack-ng etc...
Also I know some programs listed need the drivers for the specific WiFi adapter used. Let's just say its not a beginners job, but hey, research and test and maybe it will be possible.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have a working knowledge of several of the tools used (aircrack-ng suite, reaver, john the ripper, etc). I have a few good wifi adapters that support packet injection, however I'm not sure about any Android capability. I think I even have the wifi adapter they sell with the Pwnie Express version but I'll have to take a look. If so, at least I know that specific adapter will work as intended via OTG cable.
adxgrave, thanks for the thread. I know that the aircrack-ng suite does work on the ARM architecture because I've run it from my Raspberry Pi before, however I understand that's not at all close to making it work on the N7. I'll keep digging into this topic this week and get back here with some more information.
Again, thanks for the replies fellas.

Even if android doesn't support air crack, I'm pretty sure it does, as I had the alpha app waaaay in the past, you could just boot up Ubuntu and use air crack from there assuming there are Linux drivers for your adapter. Remember, using air crack to crack pass codes is against the law in many places. *unless perhaps you are trying to crack your own to try to increase your security defences on your network.

Basically unless someone can get the atheros drivers working on the nexus 7 all this discussion is useless. Pawnpad has already done that.
Everything else is simple as you can use deploy linux to run kali or your own distribution for all the tools.
The broadcom drivers could be ported (they already work well on the samsung S2)
However much better to have the atheros usb adapter as the range is much greater.

no need for multirom. simply install linux deploy from google play and inside the program choose kali linux as the distribution that you want to use.
Linux will run on top of android and use the Nexus 7 connectivity. However you can't inject or monitor, however you can presently do almost everything else like use metasploit, arpspoofing, etc...

The Android sticks have USB WiFi and USB-LAN support out of the box. Funny they throw in a few $5 accessories and repackaged it as $800. Wow.
When I test work, I like to test with a mobile devices since they run on batteries and typically a "worst case scenario". If you can connect with a less powerful device then everything else should be good to go.

Ubuntu for Android App

On the Indiegogo page for the Ubuntu Edge, you can see a video of a proof of concept for the Ubuntu Desktop.
She used an app on a stock Nexus 4 (if I remember correctly, she says AOSP) and just launch it like that on Android and sent it to the screen.
Am I the only one who find this more amazing than running Ubuntu Touch on a Android phone ?
If you take a look at the size of the ARM Ubuntu version, you have a 500 MB file and I was wondering how Android can just load like that Ubuntu and run it along Android ?
Cheers.

As you point out, the video demonstrates a fully functional version of Ubuntu for Android. In the IRC channel, Ubuntu VP of engineering stated that U4A requires the Android OS to be modified slightly. I'm hopeful this process is unveiled soon and U4A becomes publicly available. It likely won't be very smooth on current commercially available hardware, and there's not really enough storage on an N4 to make it very practical, but it would still be nice to get a glimpse of computing convergence.
Thank you for your answer, is there any way to have access to this discussion ?
It seems pretty smooth on the video, which is surprising when you know the current hardware limitation on Android ...
For the storage, the cloud allows you to only download the file you need so it might not really be a problem.
I'm currently thinking about building a NAS to use it as a storage and download platform, it might be a custom solution for this problem.
Another option is my linuxonandroid project, see it as ubuntu for android but with just a one man team doing it in the spare time
Big plus side is we support a range of distros and are not limiting to Ubuntu

Just like my project they do not use a VM, they use native Chroot, which allows Linux to run on the Android kernel from within Android.
SO you get normal access to hardware and kernel features and no performance hit.
Then for the sharing its a mixture of both OS's having access to the same storage so music and files are viewable from both.
For app data shared acrossed it simply requires so work to pass this across from one side to another, something that could be done pretty easy and I have started working on myself
Nice thank you gonna give it a try tonight.

Okay, cool. I am extremely interested in this and I am a developer as well, so if there is anything you need tested or anything I can help you work on, please let me know.
I have a rooted Nexus 4 with sock jelly bean on it. I have played with installing Ubuntu Phone on it a few months back, but went back to android as I felt extremely limited in Ubuntu Phone.
I have the SlimPort® SP1002 from Amazon coming today. As I said before I would love to run it without the lag of VNC. Convergence is my main goal and I am so excited about Edge, but I want the Ubuntu for Android app for my Nexus 4 that I saw Leann talk about being already ready toady. Any idea of where/when we can get it?

Will you implement native chroot at some point too?
So now that the Ubuntu Edge campaign has failed, if/when do you think they will release Ubuntu for Android? I am going to get the new Nexus (Nexus 5?) and hopefully they will have it released for that phone.

kodi

Is it possible to install kodi nativity on the Chromecast 2 so I can run it directly from the stick instead of using my phone to stream

Because there is no way to sideload anything into the unit...It has virtually no place to put apps.
CCast is really just a glorified Chrome Browser when you get right down to it. When you cast something to it, It loads up a webpage (player/receiver app) that has the code to play the content you sent. That is why it requires internet connection to operate because it needs to be able to access those URLs to load it's player apps.
I doubt the CCast even has enough storage space built into it to run Kodi.
It's very different from a FireTV which is basically just an Android stick device with a Amazon branded Launcher.
If you want Kodi you are better off with one of those cheap AMLOGIC 905 Android boxes. You get a remote, can expand the storage capacity with an SD Card, and get a full Android to run any APK you want including Netflix and Hulu. If you shop around you can find them for just a few dollars more than a CCast costs.
PLUS most units are compatible with Win10 Cast To Device feature.

Yea, was thinking of my tv, which sideloads just fine.
With that said, there is apparently a reasonable way to cast kodi, though still seems just screencasting.

Your TV probably runs AndroidTV which is very much like FireTV in that it is running a full android operating system with a custom loader. Unfortunately even AndroidTV has some limitations in the Play Store of what apps you can put on it which is why it hasn't sold very well.
Not that you can avoid it these days, but I advise my friends to ignore all the smart features when buying a TV and just look for the best bang for buck on resolution and picture quality. If you want a smart TV it is much better to buy an external box which can be upgraded easily without having to wait for the manufacturer to catch up to current tech.
There was a time where you could get a great TV sans any Smart capabilities without paying the SMART TV premium but today just about all TVs have some smart built in. They rarely get updated, Rarely get the same support as native Android does and eventually that processor will be too slow to run the latest and greatest software.
TV can last years and still work but how many have an Android device that is over 5 years old and still useable?
I say find the dumbest TV you can find that has a great picture and add whatever smarts you want externally!
They are even selling TV mounting hardware to hide the box and wiring!
Thank you for the input, getting my old Nexus 5 setup to be the streaming device to cast kodi to Chromecast.

Does the N5 have an HDMI output? (I think it does with an adapter...
You could just plug that into the TV and add Kodi to it. Then use any Kodi remote (like the Official or Yatse) to control the device from your current phone.
You wouldn't even need the ccast then.
Yup Hdmi compatible I just have to order a cable with charging capability on it

I think any Powered OTG cable will do for that purpose.
