Xperia Z from Bell Canada (C6616) - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just picked up my Xperia Z from Bell - here's a little information on the device, as after searching for a while there doesn't seem to be much out there about this:
Model Number: C6616
Android Version: 4.1.2
Baseband Version: 9x15A-ACEFWMAZQ-30110041-32
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-g6df7905-02328-g70ed36a
Build: 10.1.1.A.1.319
Customization Version: 1275-6311_R2A
Also, rather unfortunately, the bootloader cannot be unlocked (according to the Service info > Configuration page).

Can you tell us if the screen is better? I saw some videos on the Bell website and it did look better. I was gonna go check out the Bell store today but didn't have time lol

I don't have a lot to go by in terms of better than other Xperia Z models, but compared to my SGS3 it looks much better and is actually visible in direct sunlight.

Have you tried rooting it and flashing a custom recovery?

Not yet - this is the first Sony device I've owned (used to Samsung devices and the various Nexus'), so I'm a little gun-shy regarding flashing things meant for different models.

Tried rooting it today and, as expected, it failed.

Use DooMLorD to root, I think it should be fine.
Would you be able to backup your rom to FTF file?
Here is the instruction to make ftf file of your rom.

The update made the screen look a lot better but that was with 253 version already and 4.2.2 made it even somewhat better again and camera too.

Tried Doomlord's without luck, but I didn't use the new method to flash the other kernel (was fairly unsure if I would soft-brick it). I'll follow that guide and post the resulting file, though.

FTF Bundle here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44229119

Thank you very much for the ROM.

I flashed its baseband but it didn't work unfortunately.
This Rom only has band 4 LTE also even though Bell says it has AWS and 700.
It couldn't pick up t-mo LTE too.

For any other Bell users who are new to Xperia devices and unsure of flashing, I successfully flashed this 4.2.2 stock firmware using Flashtool (left FOTA, BASEBAND, and UNKNOWN unchecked). I had to add the Bell APN settings, but everything works!
Additionally, I rooted using this guide, but when I got to step 11, I reflashed the kernel from the first firmware image I linked instead.

So if I get this one, unlock it and flash standard firmware, can it be used with Rogers and its LTE?

Rogers and Bell both use the same LTE bands, so it should be good with the network unlock. Switching firmware is really only required for rooting/getting 4.2.2 at this time.

So bell's firmware is standard or it's a custom one with bell's apps per-intalled (aka you have to wait for them to release a new version 2-3 weeks after everyone else gets it)?

Bell's firmware has their apps, and is subject to their release schedule, but will work with other carriers - it's just the network lock that prevents you from using another carrier. However, if you're looking to root, or don't want the extra Bell branding in your face, switching firmware is a valid option.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of bell's branding tbh, because all my services are with rogers. But what is difference between 6606 and 6616, do you know by any chance? thx

Never used the 6606, or any of the other models. From the looks of things, though, it's a difference in basebands and supported frequencies.

laslow, I flashed baseband off the ftf file you posted, there is only band 4 LTE, not 700 (band 17) as stated on Bell website.

I'm not running it anymore so I can't verify, but that was the firmware bundle on the phone, fresh from the store.

So does that mean AT&T 8.9 4g lte will get their update?
If so it's great timing. The iPad mini is being released tomorrow.
That means I can sell this piece of 5hit Samsung AT&T delay device and get an apple.
I'm so pissed of all the delays Samsung has been doing to all their devices.
Great!

OTA for Canadian Carriers (Telus/Bell/Rogers)
It was reported today on mobilesyrup.com that the Bell, TELUS and Rogers Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich now available.
We know those ICS ROM's are available as per the OP's links, but some of the comments below that article indicate the Canadian Carriers have started OTA upgrades to ICS!!!

A CSR at Rogers told me their update was released by devs over two weeks ago but no one seemed to be able to download it. I just checked my device and suddenly I have it available as an OTA update. Odd...
Got notic=fication this monring on my tab, and took around 15 min (download + install) get the it upgraded.
New UI, I assume maybe just me, I am too used to honeycomb, it take time for me to get used to the new UI. But I do like the browser with the "desktop view " option. And I can get Chrome on it now as well.

Can anyone confirm this method to be a working root with i957 ICS? I just got this thing free from Rogers as yet again they messed up my account. Not concerned with the lack of ROMs as the stock firmware is pretty smooth, but would def like to debloat all the Rogers ****.

[Q] Stock Rom won't update [uk]

I have the stock rom with no root (C6603) running android 4.1.2 on build number 10.1.A.1.434, it refuses to update to 4.2.2 over the air or using sony pc companion, I avoided rooting this time because I have apps the don't work when the phone is rooted (banking), I'm with virgin media but the phone is unlocked, is there a way that I can get this update without having to root the phone??
thank you for your time
There is no update to 4.2.2 for UK unbranded handsets. I assume that is what Virgin supplied you with.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler then look in Service Info -> Software Info. If your Customisation version is 1270-7689, then you have a UK unbranded device and cannot officially update yet.
You can download one of the many ftf available in the general section and flash it with flashtool however. That does not require root.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2
Here is a link to change the customisation number of your device (root required) that will make PC companion believe you have an available update to download. I tried this amd it worked first time
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311211
However if you do not want to root the devixe, then simply using flashtool and your stock 4.2.2 .ftf file you will have no problem achieving what you wish
Hope it helps

I live in Portugal, should I flash the Portuguese unbranded firmware or the Spanish which is in the latest version?
Do I have to delete my data to flash the new firmware?
... sorry for asking, I know that somewhere in XDA there are adequate answers, its just that it would be much nicer if Sony would just release the unbranded firmware for all unbranded Xperia Z's! I'm a software developer myself, and cannot think why, after Sony releasing the latest firmware in the UK (branded), would not release the unbranded version since the only relevant think is the country customization which must already have been achieved in the branded firmware.

Well I don't know of there is a Portuguese one. I honestly flashed a Chinese stock rom and i just check I have Spanish and also Portuguese languages. U really can flash any stock 4.2.2 rom u like. I don't know why unbranded devices don't get an update mine is unbranded too and I had to flash a stock firmware. But it wasn't a big deal. And u don't lose if u don't choice wipe data ur data but there some ppl that had severely issues flashing without full wipe. My flash went without any issues or data wipe. But I can't 100% promise it will work by u without issues too.

Do you know what tools I can use in mac or linux? The official stuff only works well on windows. I know there's a flash tool for mac but there are no up-to-date tutorials, maybe I'll risk it, this 2 firmware updates behind is not a comfortable place to be.

yeah, my version is
United Kingdom Generic UK 1270-7689 10.1.A.1.434 R14A 10.1.A.1.434 R14A
basically the unbranded and yes I bought it pre-paid from virgin media as I had a contract with them and could get the phone cheaper than I could get it online, find this pretty insulting that they have just ignored a huge portion of their consumers again, they did this with the last phone I had with them which they actually canceled the updates past android 2.1 even though people had 2.3.7 running on it fine at the time and even have jb 4.1.2 running (partially from the sd card of the phone) on that handset, sony release great devices and just leave them with little to no support, I'm tempted to boycott them in the future if this is the legacy they wish to leave behind, very sad since they have well polished hardware, any news on a possible release date for us ?
Im in the same boat and have a generic UK device stuck on 4.1.2 , what stock ROM is recommended to flash onto UK devices so they still receive OTA Updates etc? , really do not want root on the device at the moment due to Sky Go apps etc.
Cheers

[Q] Flashable Roms for T-Mobile Xperia Z

So far I haven't seen a whole lot on this just that CM doesn't work right now. Does that mean roms like Paranoid Android and PAC Man won't work either??
Which type of roms will work?
Can anyone list a few of the best ones? Mine's coming through UPS on Wednesday and I wanna be prepared to do everything right away. Thanks!
I assume you mean the C6606 (the T-Mobile US Z).
If so, you can only flash stock based roms.
The bootloader cannot be unlocked on the C6606. Locked bootloader means no custom kernels, which in turn means no roms like PA, CM, PAC etc will work.
So, to answer your question, any rom that says it's for locked bootloader should work.

i have been researching this. it doesnt seem like there is going to be anyone who can unlock the bootloader. but there might be another way around it kind of like "mini loader" basically we will be able to flash aosp roms and custom kernals just no unlocked bootloader. pretty much jump thru hoops to do anything with c6606 t-mobile has Royally F'ed us... i really want someone to unlock that bootloader n RUB IT IN THEIR FACE! i dont know why they bothered with this... but theres got to be a way around this.... keep on hoping and lets see what happens i guess...

He meant Wifi Calling, which is only available on T-Mobile firmware. He just put a period in the wrong place.
Bump...any new Roms where we don't lose wi-fi calling?
None that Ive seen. Only ROMs for locked BL that are coming out are based on firmware made for the international market (4.2.2), none on T-Mobile (4.1.1).
The locked BL is really disappointing. Really limits the possibilities. I bought the Z on impulse and didnt research the Development situation on the Tmobile version before i bought, now im regretting it. I love the hardware and design, but will likely be trading it in by Christmas because of the lack of options for custom ROMs. Samsungs may be ugly as hell but you can hack the hell out of them. If HTC makes a phablet with the design of the One, Ill probably make the switch.
Back on topic, which LB ROM is most recommended and bug free? Any way to fix the poor wifi signal? Its chewing my battery like nobody's business.

Really disappointed with no custom Roms too might trade for another phone but not going to samsuck. Still have faith in what the devs here can do though.

Beautiful work with these stock files and posting all the rooting/recovery info and links in one thread. Looking forward to the ride on the GN4.

Which Rom section Can I use then to flash the Canadian version ? Tmobile, Att, ?
you say that
"It is also sim unlocked, so it can be used with any Canadian carrier."
I have a roger version, seems to be locked. So if I root and flash this will unlock the sim carrier?
thank you

Odd my Bell one is unlocked, I popped in my buddy's Rogers sim with no issue.
Also says it's unlocked on the box.... I'll post a picture when I get home.

Nice, at least we know now that Bell version is unlocked! I had to pay around 15$ to get it unlocked!
very odd, my bell was locked.....had to unlock before poping a rogers sim...

Rooting will not Carrier Unlock your device - Flashing a Custom Rom will not Carrier Unlock your device - Either pay Rogers $50 after 3 months - or go to sammobile.com - They offer a Carrier Unlock service.

I had problems with a tmobile rom so i used your steps with the stock NJ3 Wind rom. However the file turned out to be a Bell Rom. My csc even says BMC when i check it. My signal hasn't been as good on this stock rom.
Any chance you know where i can find the actual Wind rom that came with the phone?

Its All Just N910W8

Mine definitely is, and came out the box that way. I've adjusted the OP to omit the sim unlock given that its inconsistent.

Firstly getting them from sammobile wont change a thing; the files provided are the same.

Now to clarify, unlike the US or the rest of the world; all the carriers in Canada use the same rom.
Meaning no matter if you have wind, bell, telus, rogers etc its all the same modem, kernel, recovery, and system.
Its all N910W8, so there cannot be a modem/signal difference.
And for proof here is a list of MD5's checksums for the files I provide and what sammobile provides:

It was the exact same with the Note 3; we only get one ROM.
So I am going to change the OP to reflect this fact and only provide 1 set of files with instructions on how to change your CSC.
Boom done problem solved.

So this confirms that any bell, Rogers or tells phone can be unlocked to work on the AWS networks such as wind or chatr? I have done a ton of research and could not find the AWS bands on bells info but have seen both model numbers on bells, winds, etc. As N910W8
Has anyone had luck unlocking even though a company?

I'm going to say yes given that they are all N910W8 and all running the same rom.
But I haven't tested it personally; buddy at work has wind, I will try his sim in my phone next week and report back.

[Q] Is CM12.1 worth it/safe? And whats the best way to install?

Hello from Australia, still on KitKat, the ISP's haven't even received Lollipop here and its not looking like we will get an update any time soon...
So i have been thinking about CM12.1.
From what it looks like, there are only nightlies available....
Is it worth getting on that?
Are they safe enough?
Are there any other methods of getting lollipop on my device as a daily driver?
How would i go about installing CM12.1 on the Xperia Z1?
Cheers,
Marcel
Why don't you flash an official lollipop firmware? (from another carrier or a generic one). CM12.1 still have some bugs...
Search in "General" or "Android development" for stock lollipop "ftf" or "pre-rooted firmware" it's easy and safe to install

wouldnt one from another carrier (have to be a different country as the only 2 in australia dont have anything) not work with networks here? i have read in lots of places all the builds that people offer for the Z1 have issues with network and the camera. would all features work??
Well, just check frequencies...
Here in Italy we can flash anything that is EURO-LTE... Just have a look for GLOBAL-LTE rom... I think it might actually work. If it doesn't, you aren't bricking nothing, just flash 4.4.4 ftf...
I also suggest you to use xperifirm to check and download the ftfs

Question is does Australia use LTE or 4G? Because I tried a LTE variant on my UK handset and it wouldn't work, I had to create my own pre-rooted rom to allow me to use 4G.
4G LTE is not the same thing? [emoji19]
