using own AC - Google Chromecast

I don't have any choice but to power it on the AC. It was connected at the back of my receiver (Yamaha) but unfortunately the USB on my receiver is in front but I'd rather use its own power for a clean look. The problem right now is the chromecast is always on. I can see the white led is always there. I'm afraid this will not going to last if its always on

I don't think you will have a problem with it being always on. If you are really concerned, you could always get one of those Green power strips that turn off specific power ports if the main power port isn't in use.

I agree that this shouldn't be a concern. Most modern LEDs running at standard intensity 24/7/365 should last 8-11+ years. You should be asking yourself if you expect to still be using your Chromecast over a decade from now. Also: When was the last time you saw a consumer electronics device in use with a dead LED?

I have a tuner/amplifier that I still use to power my small Bose speakers that is from the early 90s. The LED panel on the front is burned out so its no longer useful to tune radio stations, but the amplifier still works as well as it did from day 1. Amplifiers are hundreds of $$ for one with similar wattage, so i have continued to deal with its problems.

The manual says nothing about overheating causing damage to the device.
All that the manual says is to unplug it (to let it cool off) before removing it. Heat shouldn't be a problem.

Does your receiver have a 'switched' outlet on the back? That outlet will go on/off with the receiver. You could plug the Chromecast into it.

Galaxy S dead?

Hey everyone,
My galaxy S ran out of battery, I plugged it into my car charger and it went into download mode? Got home, it completely died. Plugged it into my charger and the screen wont even turn on.
Can someone help?
Anyone? Ideas? It's completely dead.
Tried removing the battery, wait for say, 2 minutes, and putting it back on?

Yeah, I've tried this. Won't work.
This may sound stupid, but could it be that the charger / wall socket is the one broken? Try plugging it into a computer's powered USB socket.
If you're on a laptop, this is usually all ports except one that doubles as an e-sata port, and for desktops, this means all ports. You might need to plug the laptop into a wall socket though. Don't connect it to a USB hub.

Tried 3 different computers :/
1 of 2 things
1- your battery is ****ed. and i think thats the case because u plugged it in a car charger
" why you people keep doing that "
2- your phone is fried " over power from the charger "
again
" why on earth you people keep charging from the car. even the official chargers are stupid . any your car might not have stable elctric current in it. #$#@ >_<
try different battery.
Did you connect your phone before starting the car?
Some chargers don't have a fuse, or the fuse is set for higher currents.
Some cars will run a peak-current (a high jolt of electricity) through the electrical systems when you start them, this might have fried your battery indeed.
Thanks for everyone's help. The car chargers fuse is blown. The battery isn't dead though, just went to a Samsung service center and he "shocked" the battery into starting. Phone went back into download mode so he is keeping it for more diagnostics.
No phone for about a week . The annoying this is, if this was an iPhone they'd replace it on the spot. I love Android, and I couldn't live without it's features, but Samsung really make it hard to love their warranty process.
Just an update for anyone with future problems similar to mine.
The memory had died, and Samsung replaced all the internals of my Galaxy S.
Also, one more thing. Since getting my phone back pressing the power button turns the screen off but doesn't lock my phone. When I press a button to wake my phone up it goes straight into whatever I was doing before, no lock screen.
How do I fix this?

I had that same issue when I swapped from an 8 GB UK to a 16 GB Australian model. I don't know the cause but it's just a bug, if you reboot it should go away. You can also try something like adding a screen unlock pattern. I still get the issue every now and again but I just fiddle around until it goes away.

Weird cable issue

My USB cable is red now(the little N light on it). Before it would either be green or orange but now when the nook is not connected, it's on and red. Why? Anyone know? Is this a problem?
mine has been doing that too, but it still charging, so I didn't think any thing of it...

Mines charging as well but I figure a red light like that must mean something and I'm worried that the cable could be damaged and charging my battery incorrectly.
I emailed customer service at Barnes and noble to see what they say. apparently poll who don't root it who have asked on their forums have the same problem, but there was never any real solution/answer.
They replied with the following
We are sorry you are experiencing problems with the charger for your NOOK Color and we are eager to assist you.
If your NOOK Color is plugged in via USB to a computer, try plugging the cable into a different USB Port; a red light generally indicates "no connection." You may also want to try plugging your NOOK Color into the AC Adapter and charge it via a wall socket.
If your NOOK Color is plugged into the AC Adapter and is charging via the wall socket, make sure that the USB cable is connected properly and it is not loose on either end. If the light is still red, the cable may be defective.
We reviewed your email, and based on the information you provided, we feel that we may need to process a warranty claim for you. Before we can get started, we need to speak with you to verify certain information about your device, and to make doubly sure that we understand the problem.
We ask that you call us at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665) and select option 2 for NOOK Support. We are available Monday through Friday from 8AM to 11PM EST, Saturdays and Sundays 9AM to 11PM EST. Customers outside of the United States may contact us at 201-559-3882.

based on their description, I think they are saying if it's plugged in to the charger and the nook and red, then it's bad. not if it's not plugged in...
Guess I will call them tomorrow and see if that is correct.
Mine spent the last couple of weeks failing in very weird ways, finally being dark, red, amber, or green depending on just how I held it. New cable fixed it up.
The really bizarre thing was that it kept the same "plugged in" state it had at boot time; if I plugged it in and booted, it thought it was plugged in forever, and if it was unplugged at boot, it never charged or thought it was plugged in at all. USB mounting didn't work no matter what state it was in.
I think that the software has more to do with charging than I thought.

Just got my nook, and my cable won't light up at all. When I turned off the room lights, I can see a very low orange dim. My unit won't even charged. I may have to buy a new cable. there were alot of bad comments on the B&N site about the defective cables.
I hate proprietary cables, and the fact that if it breaks, I'm SOL until I get a replacement.

Why buy one? Go to B&N with your cable, charger, and NC and you'll walk out with the appropriate component. Most likely the cable, but it's possible the charger is bad. There have been cases where they don't have any to hand out and they have to ship it, but either way you don't have to buy one.

Tasker In-Car power issue

I have built a Nexus 7 into my car and I have a small issue.
I need a tasker profile:
When I turn the car on, the screen turns on and music plays.
When i turn the car off, the music stops and the screen turns off. (along with other stuff)
I have created a "test" version of all this so when I connect a power cable (i.e when charging) it turns the screen on and plays music.
When I disconnect the USB (i.e. stops charging) the screen goes off, music stops, bluetooth off etc and all this works fine.
However, the USB will always be connected with power coming through so I cannot use this option. I need another way to detect if the car is on and when it turns off so I can run the correct tasks.
One option i thought of is buy a wireless charger and build it into the car. When my phone is placed on the charger, send a text message to the tablet to turn it on, and when i turn the car off the charging will stop, then the phone will send a text to the tablet to turn the screen off etc.
However after purchasing the wireless charger, i realised everytime i get a call or take my phone of the charger for whatever reason, the screen will go off and music will stop, so this isnt an option either.
So the question is, what can i do so tasker can detect that the car is on or off so the nexus can perform the tasks?
Hope that makes sense

You do realize that you really have two problems, right? The Nexus 7 will not know when the car is started, or stopped. Unless you can disconnect the power, manually etc.. If you can do that, you can send a command in fastboot to force the N7 to power up when power is connected, otherwise you'd have to boot it up manually.
You could unplug the USB charger.. Or have the tablet turn off after N hours of inactivity, although how do you detect "new" activity if there's no change when the car is started.
If your car has bluetooth, you could detect that as the "turn off" task perhaps, but turning on is probably your bigger issue.
Will the wireless charger idea work?

No idea what you mean by wireless charger (2012 model has no wireless charging), or how you'd control it with the phone. And unless your tablet is a 3g one, I don't know how you'd directly communicate with it either.
I just put my phone back to stock so I had to uninstall Tasker, however your tablet does not pull power once the car is off correct? I had a power based one as well, I remember testing it with a surge protector. I could leave the USB connected but flip the surge protector on and off (to mimic power to the phone being halted). To my knowledge when the car is off your USB shouldn't be drawing power therefore you could run the profile off that. Export the profile and post here. I'd like to help test it.

My last four cars (current and previous of wife and my cars) the lighter plug stays powered when the engine is off.
I think it's getting increasingly common for the plugs to stay powered. So there's no way for the tablet to know the car is off unless the car has bluetooth and you can look for that.

I have actually found the exact opposite to me true. My wife's 2014 Pilot goes off as well as my 2012 Veloster whereas my 2001 Sable and her 2007 Passat left them on. I'm not sure if you can resolve your issue then. I'll keep looking into it. You could trigger it based on speed I think

I suppose that could work.. Find out the speed for several periods in a row, if it's zero, assume it's time to shut down. But that'd mean it's playing music etc during that period etc.
IMO bluetooth, or a plug he can turn off, is really the only way if his USB is powered up all of the time.
Also remember, he has no way to know when to power UP either. I still maintain that's the bigger problem, especially if it's a fixed install and he can't poke the power button
At the moment, its connected so when the car turns on, the USB is powered up and when the car turns off, the power in the USB stops. So at the moment, my tasker profile works on "when charging" do Task A, when not charging do Task B. And it all works fine at the moment.
However I am having issues with charging, (The device is not charging fast enough when turned on and the battery drains over a couple of days) so i planned to keep it always charging, so the power in the USB will always be there regardless of if the car is on or off. So i cant use the "when charging" on tasker anymore. So i needed a new way to it to figure out when i got in the car.
Here are my ideas:
1. Have a wireless charger in my car for my phone. (Not the tablet). When i get in the car, i could put my phone on the charger, have the phone send a text to the tablet to turn it on. When i remove the phone from the charger, send a text to the tablet to turn it off. Simples
2. Connect a wifi router in the boot or something and have it start up only when the car starts, and turn off with the car. It doesn't have to be connected to the internet, it just needs to power up. Then i can do a 'When wifi near' on tasker to see if the car is off or on, and turn the screen off accordingly.
3. Connect the tablet to my phones bluetooth. Whenever i get in the car, they will connect and the tablet will power on. when i leave the car, it will power off. (Not the best option since it will stay on even if i am near the car)
4. Similar to option 1, but have a nfc sticker in the car. when i swipe my phone on it, it communicates with the tablet and turns it on, n then off when required. but i dont want to do this since i know i am going to forget to turn it off one day.
I don't really want to do the speed option, since i want it to turn on as soon as i enter the car, not when i start driving, and i want to be able to park up and use it when i need to put an addess in the sat nav etc.

If your charger isn't charging fast enough, you're using a crappy charger or one that isn't designed for Android. If your car has a built-in USB port, those are usually super slow, maybe 500mA, most less.
Anyway, glad to hear that your power follows the car state, that makes it all simple.

I've tried about 20 different chargers, up to 2.5amps. The problem isnt the charger. The problem is i dont drive the car long enough to give it time to charge. So if i drive the car for about half an hour a day, for the other 23.5 hours, its on standby. so the battery is always going to go less. So thats why I plan to connect the charger directly to the battery so it will always be charging.

Oh, I thought you had the tablet turning off when the car went off. If I were you, I'd set up a profile that turns off the tablet if it hasn't had power in a few hours, pretty simple to do. On Power, set a time var, every so often check that time var to see if it exceeds your threshold, and power down if so.
If you don't have much installed, it should be a fairly quick power-up, especially the plug goes hot when you start the car.
BTW I hope you're considering cold and heat if you're leaving the tablet in the car. Leaving it in the heat all summer will will the battery.
You can use Timur's kernel, it senses power to turn N7 on or deep sleep it.
Also charges N7 while using OTG.
It;s designed for car install.

I agree, you need to get at least a 2A charger for your car. My wife would watch Netflix on long drives and my car USB port or the normal USB charger I got for the cigarette lighter worked until I up'd it to a 2A charger. I can have screen on for hours while streaming video and still fully charge the tablet in a reasonable amount of time.

It's very low power draw (someone recently checked it with a Kill-A-Watt) and having it on continuous power means:
Much less chance of mishap during a firmware update (since they happen without you knowing)
It can turn on your TV and switch it to the appropriate input, if your TV or connected device supports HDMI-CEC. Mine is connected to my sound bar's input box and it seems to change the TV to the correct channel as well as the sound bar box! Magic!!!
So many things don't turn "off" now. Instead they "sleep." My Xbox one is never "off", my blue ray is never " off" either. Its such a low power state that who really cares. I've tried to get my power bill down to the days of an apartment, but its impossible.

Imagine if you had to wait for your TV to boot up before you could watch TV.

If you want you could always cut open a USB cable and just install your own on/off switch on the 5v power lead. The wiring diagram for USB cables is on Wikipedia.
But just out of curiosity I got out my own power meter and checked the Chromecast. It consumes less than 2 watts on standby with the screen background photos cycling (that's the lower limit that my power meter can read). While playing a Youtube video it's still only 2 watts, though from the way the reading varies it looks like it's slightly higher than standby. As far as I can tell it's independent of whether the TV is on or not.

I'd shut down my PC save for the fact that it takes 20 minutes to become useable. Maybe I need SSD, heh.
I have some smart power control devices (TrickleStar, APC green UPS) too.
One thing I learned only a few years ago - if you unplug a battery powered device, DISCONNECT the device from the charger!
Even though it's not supposed to, some chargers allow some back flow and slow drain the device's battery, killing it.

Yep there really is no point to trying to save power without just going over and unplugging it....
As of now there are only two reasons I can come up with for really wanting to power off a CCast...
1 - The damn thing will change inputs anytime it reboots or updates
2 - The CCast gets pretty hot after awhile...It just seems like the kind of device that if you do not have a conditioned power source coming into the house it could easily fry.
On a more serious note if thats all your worried about (not Power use) then anyone who has one of those X-10 Home automation systems can easily plug the CCast into a module and shut it off from the phone or tablet.
And if you don't care that the CCast can't turn the TV on and the TV has a USB port thats probably the best way to save power.
I personally don't trust the TV to give it stable power and you will find yourself having to unplug it anyway to reboot from time to time...
If you really have issues with a high Electric bill there are far better ways to save on that bill than powering down a CCast.
Even something as simple as keeping your Freezer fully packed will save more money in the long run than the few hours the CCast is unplugged.
I don't mind it consumes energy, it is very little but I am more concerned about the fact it will be broken faster. It's like a light bulb, when you are not using it, why does it need to stay on and will need to be replaced faster.
Also the chromecast gets quite hot. So without turning it off, it never gets a chance to cool down.

It makes sense that it would be an always on device considering it needs to be there when you want it...
But some sort of sleep state might be a nice addition to any next generation model which I hope can also be wired to the network and use Wake On Lan to full power up when you want to cast.

TF701T suddenly turned off and won't turn on.

Hello,
I was using my tablet Transformer TF701T for the first time in a couple of months today. It had 5% battery or so, so the keyboard dock was also plugged into the wall charger and everything was fine.
Suddenly, during use, the tablet just went totally blank; not even the power LED is on (as it normally would be if the charger was plugged in).
The orange light is still on the keyboard dock, so that is charging. (In fact, after a few hours of being plugged in, the keyboard dock is now green)
I have tried holding down the power and volume down buttons for periods of time, but this has done nothing. I have tried plugging the charger into the base of the tablet where it docks. This did not make it light up either. (The charger has been plugged into the base of the charger all night but to no avail)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tom.
Solution
I have the same problem here. I don't know yet if it is a physical problem or a software one.
Here is my explanation and test.
I think at a certain point, there is a ''bug'' and the screen goes black and doesn't turn back on. That said, the tablet is still on. If you manage to press power, unlock by sliding, and lower/raise the volume, you should hear the DING DING sound. If it works for you, it confirms my theory.
The only way I found to fix that problem is to let the battery reach 0%. It might takes 1 week maybe. After that, connect a charger and press power quickly, you will see the red battery indicating the charging of the tablet. From that point,,, I leave it charge 30-80% then power on again. It works fine until the next ''ceasure''.
I don't know if it is related to usage. Pressing power multiple time, or reaching a certain temperature or usage level.
I've also read solutions with putting 2 cables on the battery to short it. There are also applications that can be remote triggered to ''burn'' the battery and empty it faster. I regret I didn't bring that back. I'm also wondering if cianogen could fix that. No more updates or support coming soon, although if I saw a conference in singapore showing compatibility with the new kitkat os.
anyway good luck, I'll keep my researchs.

I'm afraid that did nothing. Hearing no response whatsoever!
I'll keep experimenting. I can't send it back to ASUS as I don't have the serial number.
