Rubber around charging port cover coming off - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guess this isn't covered by the warranty? How do I put it back? Glue?

I have the same problem but near the earphones jack... Going to experiment with super glue just to get the rubber back in place... No sony warranty doesn't cover it plus they'll charge you for the cover and labor

That's the problem right there. The rubber piece has been torn off due to excessive use. i just noticed a piece of rubber is missing on my phone too and Sony isn't going to cover physical damage cause by negligence of the owner. In short, we're to blame for not taking adequate care of the flaps. Anyway, good luck and do tell me if they get it fixed for you. Sony India refused.

Neither do i. BTW your phone isn't water resistant anymore until you get that fixed. I had a little water seep through that's when i found out that the rubber is coming of.
Edit: Just to clarify things, i asked if mine would be taken under warranty and they said no. I didn't ask how much it would cost. There's a chance that they might just replace the rubber instead of the entire flap, hopefully, so try your luck.

Why not source your own from somewhere like here:

I spoke to Sony UK around a month ago as my headphone flap is missing its rubber seal. No luck, these are apparently 'sacrificial' and aren't covered under warranty for ANY defect or damage in normal use.
Sucks to be us right now.

Absolutely...we finally we have a unwaterproofed phone which looks ugly without the rubber seal on the flap and a old hardware as well..:''(

Hello everybody,
i have a question also to all rubber seals .Xperia Z is now like 6 month old how is the qualtiy and the snapping until now. Does it become a bad snapping feeling?
The reason why iam asking is that i want to buy maybe the Xperia Z Ultra and want to be sure that the qualtiy of the rubber seal is good.

Any luck getting it fixed guys
Mine just got torn of overnight.....i left my phone beside my bed charging it next thing you know i just cant seem to get it to lock in place then i saw the rubber piece got removed(the phone is just 1 month old)....luckily i found it and tried gluing it back but the piece got torn of so a bit of bad luck there.Any chnace the service centere could fix it i dont mind paying though (xperia z ultra)

the flap pulls right out. so just buy a new one online and pull the old one out
done, much better than spending a good chunk at a service center. and it's not like they could tell you did it so you'll still have warranty

Sacrificial? I guess that means we can easily source a replacement seal.
WTF...
How hard is it to replace the flaps? And anyone have a source? My problem one is the charging one, as obviously that gets opened and bloody closed daily.
The flaps are really a poor design. My only physical complaint on the phone.

They pull out? Have you done this, or read of it being done this way? Everything I keep seeing indicates the rear needs removal for it.
Looking at the pics I've seen though, they should be able to be installed with them in place, but it'd be touch and go pulling it out without snapping it. If you had a really fine micro "slim-jim" type tool you might be able to push it down the hole and trip any clasp.
I also guess even if it did break, you could install the replacement without the thether... It probably would work better without, you'd just have to not lose them... I mean having them flapping when open is irritating, and probably the reason the rubber seals are damaged. In fact, looking at my phone now while it is charging, I can see that the rubber seal when open is physically touching the USB cable. Bad bad design...
Cheers

Water resistant flaps

So I've had my XZ for a week now, I'm on my 2nd one which I had exchanged. I've noticed on this one the flap that covers the charging port doesn't press down completely! If I press down on it there seems to be a slight movement, like 0.5mm of give, not much but I'm worried if I decide to put it into water would it survive?
Does anyone else have this problem, or am I being really nit picky! My first one shut completely flush.

I've noticed that as well, as long as you press in the end of the flap nearest the top of the phone first, I find it holds the cover in more securely.

i have no problem with it!
it keeps in its port properly B
Mine sit tightly. Maybe ask Sony about it as they might be faulty. If they move - it means they don't sit there properly and might leak ( i think )

How tough are these flaps? and what if one was to come off?
I ask because the other morning, got up late out of bed, picked up my XZ and pulled charger cable out also pulling on the flap, with it being dark and couldn't see properly, I thought i'd pull the flap off as that's what it felt like. Thankfully I never, but scared me a little

[Q] That's it, water inside. Where can I get new flaps?

Hello folks,
I own a Xperia Z since its release, but only recently I bought a dock and a bluetooth headset. Before that, all the time I was opening ang closing the flaps that protect the phone from water. I knew that was not good for those little isolating rubbers attached to the flap, which do the job, but I thought they would take longer to break. Both sim and sd card ports are like new, but the micro usb port and the 3,5mm jack port are damaged, and the water indicator is red =\
Where can I buy new flaps? I want to replace the damaged ones for new ones.
I bought this phone in a travel to USA, because in Brazil it was not lauched, so I can't get the flaps in some Sony repair centre.
thanks
Please, help. I really need a new headphone flap.

try either just googling it to see if some online distributor has miscellaneous parts for sale, or check a local cell phone store to see if they have some wrecked one you could buy parts off of
I take it you're replacing the flaps so that you can get service you are not entitled to? There really is no other reason to replace the flaps...

The OP didn't say the phone was damaged, only that the water ingress indicators were red.
Perhaps they want to replace the flaps simply to prevent more water from entering and actually damaging the phone.

That's actually a pretty good point hehe. Sorry for jumping to conclusions OP!
The phone is not damaged really... Some water did get inside it, but nothing a night in the rice couldn't handle. It's working fine now... but not water resistant anymore. The little rubbers on the usb and headphone flaps are damaged, so the indicator is red (I don't think they can go white again). I'm using a dock and a bluetooth set now, but it's too late. I want to buy new flaps and replace them myself, that's it.
And no, I couldn't find any yet =[

New flaps coming with the new housing, and new housing coming with a new LCD+Touch unit wont be cheap pal.
No point to get new housing alone as you going to crack your lcd anyway when you take the battery out.
For you if you really want to change flaps need to get: a parts only unit.

You're right they cannot turn white again (at least not on their own), they turn red as a result of a chemical reaction with the hydrogen(?) in the water.

About youtube the guy broke the lcd and with his tool scratched the ribbon, which likely makes the audio not working.
Sorry I'm not scaring, I used to do that almost every day... If an small piece of the original flap's white joint still inside, there is no way you can close it properly even if you stuff the new in, because it will be on the way. You need to dismantle the unit to get the broken piece out. there is no spare room inside. At work when we have an xpz with battery change we just order a new LCD+Full housing with it then remove battery and mainboard than fit it in the new housing with a new battery because the Battery 90-95% cracks the LCD when we pull it out. To remove the mainboard we need to take the battery out.The LCD just 2mm thick not even a frame on it, and the battery is glued onto the LCD with a strong glue. That's why when you drop your phone your lcd breaks, not because is a piece of glass rather because the battery breaks it. Consider this i just want to help, not scare. Top of that you not supposed to know any of this info. I only know because i been trained to do it, by a sony tech, as i working in an official service provider for EE.

At the forum posted that phone normally working. Sony refused to guarantee
What to do with this? I have new phone and can I put my phone in pants pocket ?
Its link to polish forum: http://forum.android.com.pl/f867/krzywy-telefon-dosa-ownie-352418/
I dont understand the problem.. Perhaps you can share some more info since I cant read polish..
My problem: I dont know whether this is a defect in the model, and I'm afraid that it is going to happen with my phone. It is a strange phenomenon.
What is the defect. Like I said I cant read a thing on that website
Can you use google translate? I cant say this better ;(. For me defect this phone is "easy to bend" sorry for language.
Holy cow that's a serious issue if that happens when just in your pocket.
I carry mine only in my pocket too, no case, and its perfectly fine.
Can you post some pics with the phone face down, I would like to see how big the gap is.

How on earth is that possible. A phone that has bend?

Why is did not repaired yet? You cant work with this phone like this?
That is not a normal defect. Return to Sony for Repair or swap. You must wear really tight pants for that to bend

I don't think it's that the pants were tight, something's wrong with the aluminium I guess. This really don't look good at all..
OK now I'm paranoid, my phone has a slight rock when it's face down on a flat surface. The movement less than a millimetre, so I hope that's just a natural manufacturing variance...
First time in my life I see a Xperia Phone curved!
You better get it to sony center!
no aluminium body can bend just like that if we keep phone in pockets
this is manufacturing defect
is it brought with warranty or without warranty??
because when i got one without warranty, i paid less but it has some serious defects on its body!!
I hope Xperia SP doesn't earn the nickname banana phone.
Of maybe it is Sony showing Samsung and LG how a real curved phone should be?

[Q] Are my port covers failing?

I'm noticing that my charging port cover is starting to have some issues staying closed. Sometimes it pops up unless I close it in a particular matter. Just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about regarding this phone's ability to be waterproof. Does this happen with all models overtime (Only been 2 months!) and will replacing them compromise the IPX58 certification in any way. I'm kinda disappointed i'm having this issue so soon.
Absolutely you should be worry about it because this can compromise the water resistant option. Is the first time I hear about that so probably not happen to everyone. Check if the rubber inside is not pinch or something like that. Anyway this will not help so you should go tho the store and ask if is covered by warranty, do not panic, even if is not the flaps are cheap and even if you will have pay for it, will be few back only, i know is not fair but ask them first.

Easy, you don't have to open even the phone to replace them, just pull out the flap from the small hole, be careful to do not cut it so no pieces will stuck inside and then if you get the new flap with a toothpick you put it in.
EDIT: Sorry, I was thinking you want to replace them and not oil them! My Bad!
..but you can do it in the same way.

If flaps are lose, then its not normal.. Your waterproof feature is compromised.. U have to get em replaced in service center, but no warranty for that.. U have to pay.. It costs like 1200rs in India.. They replace all the flaps.. Price depends on the region though.. Good luck with the flaps.. Also one more suggestion.. Use a bluetooth headset, dont open flaps at all.. Keep it safe.. Be gentle if u open.. Use Airstream to connect to PC's.. Use charging dock u bought..

Is it possible you're somehow pressing on the glass surfaces and the air pressure is making the flap pop out?

No.
The flaps routinely handle the pressure due to the normal daily variations of the atmospheric pressure, and due to the temperature variations. Both are much stronger than that what you would get from pressing onto the glass. Yet I bet that any of those are smaller than the mechanical force of the rubber friction that prevents the flaps from falling out when you simply tap on the side.
I had the same problem with them, one was opening itself and the other one has ripped rubber and they replaced the flaps under warranty

Try to clean the rubber (the flap and inside) with a toothpick, do it gently, unless you want it to get worse, that's what I've been doing with my xz.

Use charging dock u bought..

what's the point of buying a phone when you don't use all of its features, sooner or later you're going to have it broken though.
I'm just sayin' my opinion, no hard feelin' mate :highfive:

I just posted an alternative.. I just told him about the 2nd way of using the same features, which makes easy without any wires and also gives the phone a better durability.. That's all.. No features are excluded here.. Its just few of those tricks we can use as an alternative to maintain the phone neat and don't let it wear off... Although i would like the old fashion using cable to connect to PC..

Flaps are not covered under warranty but since the phone is brand new, this falls under defective/manufacturing error category.
@OP: Don't repair your phone. Take it back and demand a replacement as you clearly got a defective unit. They are not supposed to be loose, therefore if they are, it means there's a manufacturing defect.
Never had a problem with my flaps. Open and close them every day.

Even though this is OT, i'm gonna reply. 4.4 is coming to our devices in Q2 (may), so we are really close. You can find 4.4 leak in android development forum.
The flaps are cheap, you can buy them yourself if you really have to (no warranty?), even the detector-strips can be bought for the Xperia Z and Z1, in case you are a heavy sweat(er) (not sure if that word exists but anyways :silly
The skill to replace the Xperia z flaps
The video about how to replace the sony xperia z flaps will help you.
