[Galaxy 2 tab 7]Cm10.1][Tvheadend And Rvbt Running] - Galaxy Tab 2 7" Android Development

This is a copy paste thread from this To here
please don't ask me about anything of this the thread has been created by @cmarxmeier
Finally made tvheadend running on galaxy tab2 7" with it913x dvbt-stick locally:
Using own modified nightly cm-10.1 (only a few bins like iptables-save/restore etc. integrated) i'd set up an ubuntu raring loop image with 3.82 gb on tablet with linux deploy.
After setting all dev-tools and espresso10 source i'd took media_build from linux-tv.org and compiled all kernel modules to get it913x working (was supported from kernel 3.2.x on - espresso10 is 3.0.3x).
dvbt-channel-scanning with wscan from droid tv worked fine but dvblast to get stream from within droidtv always failed - even with self compiled versions from git source.
I checked out TVHGuide (frontend for tvheadend) against my ubuntu notebook install - worked fine. After that i installed tvheadend-source in ubuntu image on android - was often inperformant but worked.
Next way was to compile tvheadend for espresso10 with toolchain (HowTO link war blocked by system ) and pushed to /data/dvb by means of adb.
firmware was pushed to /etc/firmware, modules to /system/lib/modules or /data/dvb to be loaded from script.

DroidX source posted! tun.ko should be possible now

Sources are here:
opensource.motorola.com/sf/frs/do/viewRelease/projects.droidx/frs.droidx_source.shado_x3_1_13_5_10
Hopefully I'll get some time to work on tun.ko for openvpn or vpnc.
But if someone beats me to it, please post it here.

Downloading the source and pre-req's now. Will work on the tun.ko when I get back from dinner if no one else has it done.
Droid X source code! What!? Does this mean a bright future could be ahead for us?

Good luck to you and all for any work on this sweet phone. You rock!

Hi Drew,
Did you have any luck with tun.ko?
Thanks & all the best!
You can click in the bottom right of that that link and download all the files in one zip. SHADO_X3_1.13.5.10.zip is around 275MB.
I have unzipped that, then untarred all the individual archives.
According to the README, you need some files from source.android.com, but their link doesn't work, so that will take some more digging. (maybe I missed something...)
It appears to be the complete build process. I was just hoping to jump in and get a tun.ko modules compiled, but I still can't find the kernel config (I was just quickly looking around).
Anyway, bottom line is that I will have to get up to speed on the android build process, not just the cross compiled kernel process. This will take me some more time.
If anyone gets one before me, please post.
Thanks, Jeb
Anyone had any luck yet?

hmmm... I think that you should be able to compile the kernel with the default config options, but just enable the tun/tap module... I don't think that the module would really depend too heavily on any of the other config options?
I have compiled the module multiple times with multiple config files but none work. I get a exec failed error which is presumably because i compiled for the wrong architecture.
I have tried all the omap3 configs i found and the defconfig with no luck. I am away today but will look at it again tomorrow.

I'm no droid expert but it looks like according to the droid readme file you want ARM arch, but the compiler that youo should be using is arm-eabi-gcc (comes from the prebuilt tools from android) - in the Makefile set CROSS_COMPILE to /path/to/prebuilt/linux-x86/toolchain/arm-eabi-4.4.0/bin/arm-eabi- (or whatever the path to the file is on your build environment)
All the best,
Okay, after a bunch of hours I finally got it compiled
The 'exec format error' that you were probably seeing is not because it was compiled for the wrong architecture. I originally compiled the kernel modules with the default .config file that 'make menuconfig' generated.
When I tried to load it, I got the 'exec format error'. 'dmesg' showed:
<3>[46706.378570] tun: version magic '2.6.29 mod_unload modversions ARMv5 ' should be '2.6.29 preempt mod_unload ARMv7 '
So, that gave me a big hint - after a few hours of customizing I finally got the .config file to a version that will properly compile and load the openvpn module.
I'm attaching the .config file (config.zip) and tun.ko file (tun.ko.zip)
*NOTE* - I have not tested the kernel module yet, so I have no idea if it works. Even if it does work, the .config file is the default one that I manipulated so that the tun module would compile. You probably don't want to use the .config file as it may not match all of the hardware and configs of the droid x. If someone has the actual droid x .config file used by motorola then that would be very helpful.
*update* - the attacked files *do not work*. The working version is available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7417520
Hmm... it looks like tun.ko does compile and install, but is not working properly
# lsmod
tun 11392 0 - Live 0xbf00c000
sec 4808 0 - Live 0xbf000000
# cat /dev/net/tun
/dev/net/tun: No such device
#
The response should be 'cat: /dev/net/tun: File descriptor in bad state'
If we only had the .config file from motorola this would be a lot easier.

I'll post on Motodev board for the running .config (they should have left it in the running kernel at /prog/config.gz ...)
Anyway, thanks trying -- could you post any tips on getting a dev env setup?
I've been using linux for years, but this is my first android setup.

I'm in the same boat as you - android newbie, linux veteran.
I started out by getting the whole android environment - http://source.android.com/source/download.html - and ran 'repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git' - all of that was just so I could get the prebuilt directory with the arm-eabi- files that will be used below.
Then I just downloaded the entire project from opensource.motorola.com - extracted it all, went into the kernel directory and hacked away at the .config file from there.
To compile the kernel I ran:
CROSS_COMPILE=/home/MY_USERNAME/prebuilt/linux-x86/toolchain/arm-eabi-4.4.0/bin/arm-eabi- make -j 4 kernel
CROSS_COMPILE=/home/MY_USERNAME/prebuilt/linux-x86/toolchain/arm-eabi-4.4.0/bin/arm-eabi- make modules
I spent a few hours with it - playing around with environment variables and modifying some Makefiles so I may have left out a small thing or two
It looks like running 'make mapphone_defconfig' created a functioning .config file and I used that to generate tun.ko.
I've posted the files at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7417520
Attachments removed as per OP's request.

Sorry, I don't understand your question :S
how would i implement a dualboot
You can take the initramfs.cpio.gz posted by letama in another thread (look at the link to Ice Cream Sandwich - the file is inside the archive you download).
Then extract it and have look at the scripts, which are provided there.
Basically you have to get the system to ask you, from which filesystem image you want to boot
yep! you need to install SDE, restart your device, go in the developer menu and flash the initramfs.cpio.gz that letama posted in the ICS post, atleast that's how it was in the Gen8... by the looks of it the SDE menu is the same. Hope I helped
i wait the multi OS install
2.3
4.0
Ubuntu
Nice, I'll give this a go now.
Edit:
Works on the 101G9.
Keyboard Functions through OTG/Host Cable.
USB Mass Storage (Pen Drive) Functions on 3G Stick Port
Not tried anything else yet.
Are you using a lot of the same kernel objects which android is using?
Excellent Work.
alright thanks

Thank you very much, and also thanks for testing
I am using initramfs + kernel + modules provided by letama for his ICS-build.
By the way - I will upload a new build this night.
I have managed to get basic network functionality via adb + usbcable, so I have upgraded all packages and installed a touchscreen keyboard.
In the new build the LCD backlight brightness is now set to max on boot.
I also have added a user with sudo-permissions, so now settings are saved on reboot (not like in 0.1 where guest sessions were created).
Oh, and I will change the filesystem type from ext3 to ext4.
Still no real progress on WiFi or sound
P.S.: New build will support choosing between booting ICS and Ubuntu
//edit: sry guys, got some problems with my internet provider. i get reconnects every 30 seconds. i hope they get it fixed till tomorrow... sorry for delay, i'm going to upload the stuff tomorrow..

Might be worth giving it a go with a version 3 kernel, you may get some free driver support. although I could be talking nonsense

I activated the root login with my own password from adb and the touchscreen keyboard worked straight away on the 101. It must come with the the drivers preinstalled. I think letma's' done some work into the difference between the 80 and 101.

I've been playing with this all night. I think the drivers have been integrated in the main linux kernel so you should be able to build your own.
They could some prebuilt binaries out there as the OMAP4 board seems quite a popular board.
Also you might have some joy with this http://dev.omapzoom.org/pub/scm/integration/
It's all Good!
Archos 101 G9, HTC Sensation, HTC Hero
Hi Guys,
A1Pha, sorry, didn't have time to test your build, too much stuff going on...
Here is a quick feedback on wifi that may help you:
In android, here is how it works (from memory, don't have my laptop to check)
1) you need to create a nvs file corresponding to tablet, check android init.rc for the way it's done there...
2) Then when you do need wifi, insmod the tiwlan.ko
3) Then, load firmware (check wlan_loader in android init.rc, you should be able to reuse the command) and nvs. If all goes well up to here, you should be able to do ifconfig tiwlan0 and it should have a mac address.
4) Then start wpa_supplicant. You need the appropriate version of wpa_supplicant, 0.8 I think in android source code. You may want to build source code from android source with the appropriate options to remove android extensions.
Again, this is from memory, I'll try to give you more details tomorrow.
Regarding audio, this is mostly alsa so it shouldn't be impossible, you should be able to re-use the configuration found in archos rootfs in /usr/ sub directories. You have to insmod the proper modules though.
Best,
LeTama
Suggestion for the sound, try running the alsamixer and playing with that... worked in debian...

ahh. Thanks for that letama , You're a fountain of knowledge.
I'll give it a try during the holidays.
I was playing about with wpa_supplicant and android kernel drivers. I didn't have the right magic ) and my kernel knowledge is still in it's early stages (only been on the linux desktop for 1 year).

[TOOL] guestekrnL doItYourself STOCK KERNEL BUILDER for dummies - MAKE UR OWN KERNEL!

Ohai, everypwny!Wanna impress your girlfriend without spending any money? Show her your love through compiling her your own O2X stock kernel!
Requirements: A PC capable of running a virtual Linux machine -- if your PC isn't much older than 5-6 years there shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you have enough RAM (at least 1,5 - 2 GB recommended) -- no programming - or special linux knowledge required!
## Info: The VMWare image has been created by Jonas Hendrickx for XDA (I just altered/modified it for my needs).
5 simple steps to success: -- EVERYONE can do that!
Download and install Vmware Player (Freeware): http://www.vmware.com/go/get-player (VirtualBox will work too if you like this app better)
Download the file "guestekrnL_doItYourself_developer.rar" (http://guendhoer.com:9000/guestekrnL_doItYourself_developer.rar or https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5HJ_FpcC9ymM3ZCS0l5RFJtZnc , 1.5GB) and unpack it (using WinRar or 7Zip or...) to any folder of your choice, and afterwards double-click the file "Android Developer.vmx" -- or alternatively open VMware Player first and then import the virtual machine located in the unpacked .rar contents
Click "I copied it" and wait until virtual machine starts up, login with password "root"
Open folder "kernel_source" (on Desktop), double-click file "buildkernel" and click "run in terminal"
Wait until terminal window closes, and start using your new kernel located in folder Desktop/kernel_source/guestekrnL_BUILDS
After this an exact copy of current guestekrnL "SR99R100.1PI.1337-GoodBye" has been built and packaged to a flashable CWM-Zip.
Possible things you can easily change yourself for making your own different/improved kernel versions:
Use a different compilation toolchain
(p.ex. http://releases.linaro.org/<choose a release version>/components/android/toolchain/<choose a gcc version>/)
download the file "android-toolchain-eabi-linaro-..." and replace the folder "android-toolchain-eabi" on Desktop of virtual machine with the unpacked content of the downloaded file
There are many different builds of linaro toolchains available, resulting in different smoothness, battery life and stability of the built kernel. Important:
[*]After toolchain change you have to edit the file "buildkernel" (rightclick -> open with gedit) and change the gcc version number to the one of your new toolchain (you find it here: Desktop/android-toolchain-eabi/lib/gcc/arm-eabi/<gcc version number>), save the file afterwards
Attention: if you switch to a toolchain newer than september 2011, you MUST change
# CONFIG_ALLOW_CPU_ALIGNMENT is not set
Click to collapse
to
CONFIG_ALLOW_CPU_ALIGNMENT=y
Click to collapse
in file Desktop/kernel_source/arch/arm/configs/gueste_defconfig -- otherwise kernel won't boot!
Only use toolchains with a number up to "4.6" in name, the newer ones ("4.7") are for ICS and not Gingerbread!
NOT every new toolchain will work with O2X stock kernels -> p.ex. 4.6.4 might not work while 4.6.2 works. Every toolchain older or equal to september 2011 should work BUT maybe you will have to remove some of the build flags not recognized by the older chain.
Always check Desktop/kernel_source/guestekrnL_BUILDS/build.log for errors after you made a new kernel build, especially at the bottom of the file. (Warnings don't matter.)
Use a different version-name for the built kernel
right-click file "buildkernel" in kernel_source folder -> open with gedit -> change kernelVersion there
Use a different general name for the built kernel (other than "guestekrnL")
double-click file "Makefile" in kernel_source folder -> click "Display" -> change kernel name there (change ".9-guestekrnL" to ".9-<yourKernelName>")
Attention: the Android app GuesteOC won't work if it doesn't find the String "guestekrnL" in kernel name! You then have to use the function-reduced version of the OC app by TrymHansen available for all kernels!
Use different build optimization flags
double-click file "Makefile" in kernel_source folder -> click "Display" -> search "CFLAGS_GUESTE" -> edit the build flags there
you find a good overview + explainations of available build flags here http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.5.3/gcc/Optimize-Options.html
and an interesting article on which flags the toolchain guys use here: http://www.linaro.org/linaro-blog/2...aro-android-2011-10-and-future-optimizations/
it is completely up to YOU which flags to use and not to use!
Stock standard would be:
CFLAGS_GUESTE = -O2
Click to collapse
while the flags of current guestekrnL are:
CFLAGS_GUESTE = -O3 -ffast-math \
-mtune=cortex-a9 -march=armv7-a \
-mfloat-abi=softfp -mfpu=vfpv3-d16 \
-fsingle-precision-constant -fgraphite-identity \
-ftree-loop-distribution -ftree-loop-linear \
-floop-interchange -floop-strip-mine -floop-block \
-fmodulo-sched -fmodulo-sched-allow-regmoves \
-fno-inline-functions

if you have many flags like above, make line-breaks using slashes like above and only put 2-3 flags in one line!
Use different basic kernel configuration values
open folder "kernel_source", click the search-icon, search for "gueste"
edit the 2 files "guestekrnl.c" and "guestekrnl.h" of the result set according to your needs
guestekrnl.c and guestekrnl.h contain many default voltage/speed/... values, you can change them easily there
if you change MAX_OVERCLOCK to a higher value, you might need to change MAX_VOLTAGE as well and have to alter the whole cpu voltage and frequency table (see next point)
Help & explainations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26696158&postcount=25
Change CPU scaling voltages and speed steps
Edit the file Desktop/kernel_source/arch/arm/mach-tegra/nvrm/core/common/nvrm_clocks_limits.c and alter the two arrays "FakeShmooVoltages[]" and "FakepScaledCpuLimits"
the difference from one voltage step to another one needs to be lower or equal than 100mV;; too low voltages for a step results in freezes !!
the values for MAX_VOLTAGE and MAX_OVERCLOCK are located in file guestekrnL.h!
Help & explainations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26696158&postcount=25
Example of creating a kernel overclockable to 1.5 GHz: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26759653&postcount=58
Enable/Disable kernel features you want to use or don't want to use
open folder "kernel_source", click the search-icon, search for "gueste", edit the file "gueste_defconfig" according to your needs
"<featureName>=y" means the feature is enabled
"#<featureName> is not set" means the feature is disabled
Google for more information about what the different kernel features do, just past the kernel feature name in Google and you will find a description for most of them
Change the text shown to user on CWM installation of kernel
Edit the file Desktop/kernel_source/zipstructure/META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script according to your needs
If you are completely bad-ass you can also compile the compilation toolchain from the official sources yourself instead of using a prebuilt one (even if the prebuilt ones tend to be much more stable than the self-compiled ones)
Useful & important additional tipps/hints: Check this out
Info: If you ever stop the compilation progress before finishing, you have to edit the file "Makefile" in kernel folder and remove the version number from the version string (so only .9-guestekrnL should remain), otherwise you will have double version number in next kernel build.

Great initiative Stefan. Download stops at ~300MB for me as well, looking forward to trying it.
Are the guestekrnl-scripts included in the finished kernel installer? (Just wondering if GuesteOC will work out of the box.)

Yeah I'm just uploading to a new FTP mirror, will take about 2 more hours I guess!
And yeah, the exact zipstructure of current guestekrnL release will be built automatically, including GuesteOC v2.1.5 + Myrt UV GUI, all working out of the box!
(In fact the most actual guestekrnL release was built exactly the way I describe it in first posting: I ran the virtual machine and double-clicked/ran the buildkernel-script. That's it.)
great tutorial Stefan...made it look very simple....NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN THIS WORLD..I am going to try doing it myself Stefan...as they say...the modern world is a place where a butcher can become a goldsmith, a carpenter can be a captain of the ship and a cleaner can be a pilot....
Thanks for the make urself tool kit mate.I am sure that we will find a lot of Kernels floating in this forum....
just a matter how many are good like urs or temaseks or vadonkas or so many others....time will tell that...have to wait to see that.
I appreciate the hard work put by you to make it so simple for starters and noobs morons like me to understand.
THANKS THANKS THANKS a million.I really mean it truthfully my friend
Stefan, will your tutorial works with original source (eg, V20q) and others (eg, spica HP)? and which file/folder to make our kernel support ext4?
My idea was using stock kernel but add ext4..
Downloading with FF stopped at 500MB, but with Free Download Manager, I could download it without problems.
The sources are very cool. Playing a bit around with them...

run the buildkernel script, kernel will be built
Attention: don't use linaro/gcc toolchain newer than september 2011, otherwise kernel won't boot without additional modifications (the included default toolchain will work fine)
For every other stock kernel sources (in order to compile & zip-package them using kernelBuilder) the procedure should work similar!
Spica horsepower kernel however won't work that way, because spica does not upload his defconfig to his sources @GitHub (thus making rebuilding more difficult).
And default defconfig of stock kernel won't work with spica kernel. (Without the right defconfig the kernel does not boot.)
Older spica kernels (older than SR3) completely won't work and can't be rebuilt because spica never offered full sources @GitHub until SR3.
So in order to get a current spica kernel source working, you have to additionally
install the kernel you want to rebuild first on your phone and then
copy the file /proc/config.gz first to your internal SD and then to your PC,
unpack it and then rename the file you get to "spica_defconfig" and
place it in Desktop/kernel_source/arch/arm/configs/
finally edit the buildkernel file again so you have
make ARCH=arm spica${1}_defconfig;

in there!
In order to see the differences of guestekrnL compared to stock kernel, Download Meld Diff Viewer in App Store of virtual linux machine and make a folder-comparison of folder Desktop/kernel_source and a folder where you keep unchanged v10E kernel sources!
New direct download mirrors online! (Thx to cojo & myself ) Please report if the .rar files are error-free thx!
Additional tipps/hints:
change your keyboard layout to the one of your language/country (right-click top right most left icon and choose "change keyboard layout")
use versioning! :
double-click "Terminal" on desktop
enter "sudo apt-get install git-core git-gui" (internet connection is required)
enter the password ("root") , confirm installation, after install exit the window
enter "cd Desktop/kernel_source"
enter "git init"
enter "git add ./"
enter "git commit -a" then enter "first commit" & save & exit (the keyboard combinations for this are shown)
enter "git gui" and in first menu click "visualize master's history" -> you will see all commits and changes you made in each commit there
everytime you have made a few changes to the kernel, run "git commit -a" again (and if you add new file git add ./), so a new commit will be added to the commit history and you can see all changes there
use a diff viewer (Meld Diff Viewer of virtual machine linux software repository) for comparing guestekrnL sources with unchanged v10E stock kernel sources, so you can understand custom kernel making better! -- you can find orig sources here http://www.lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensource-detail.jsp?detailCustomerModelCode=LGP990 , download the v10E archive and unpack until you get a folder called "kernel", make a folder-comparison with Meld Diff Viewer afterwards!
Just take your time, begin with only compiling the kernel without changes (and try if it boots) and then slowly change more and more stuff, don't change too many things at once, always compile&try the kernel between more changes.
Learn by viewing the commits other developers make for their kernels, but pay attention that some commits might not be complete or incompatible with your kernel! Some commits of CM7 kernels can be useful, but not all will be compatible. When I started I learned much by just reading the commits of ironkrnL, from this commit page upwards: https://github.com/SetiroN/lge-kernel-star/commits/v2?page=5 (only the things "SetIron" directly commited) -- Please note that my own git repo is a mess, as I don't split up changes to single commits, I just make a commit for all changes a new kernel version has, so my repo won't help u much in learning
Always check Desktop/kernel_source/guestekrnL_BUILDS/build.log for errors after you made a new kernel build, especially at the bottom of the file. (Warnings don't matter.)

[WIP] PostmarketOS for motorola moto g5s

/wiki/Motorola_Moto_G5s(motorola-montana)
The kernel used is from motorola's repository, since working usb networking is a must have, I'm not so sure if I can rely on lineageos kernel(I'm not sure if it is a matter of a kernel or of the vendor/device tree I decided to play it safe) , so I decided to start from scratch.
Right now on the roadmap:
1. Clean up the messy commits and start from a new branch.
2. Get merged into postmarketos official repository. (I can do so right now, but I rather go back and re-do the commits, remove the unnecessary changes).
3. Fix DPI settings, default ones are optimized for Desktop.
4. Find out the right pixelformat to use with osk-sdl those will translate into charging/battery-sdl and Filesystem Encryption.
5. Get wifi, gps ,accelerometer, bluetooth audio working. (Wifi and accelerometer doesn't work for 100%, )
test gps/get it working, get accelerometer working ,fix DPI.
6. Lastly mainlining kernel, which is required to get the WIP postmarketos modem driver and 3D Acceleration working.
Optional:
1. Porting MultiROM and patching a kernel to support kexec-hardboot patch on our device.
Once I will get my internet back I will work on @up things and provide:
1. Instructions on getting this linux distribution compiled.
2. Fastboot bootable kernel and sdcard image. I would prefer for you to boot a kernel and using sdcard over a flashable zip image for now, disappointment guaranteed.
WIFI networking most likely doesn't work since I haven't created device/firmware-montorola-montana package with wifi firmware.
If you want to contribute hit me up, I have a very slow connection and possibly have it for couple of days, so I might not be able to do any work for some time.
I don't have enough posts to make a DEVDB nor a development thread, so take it as [Q&A] thread that will hopefully get me to the minimal number of posts I require.
I also can't post outside links apparently the repositories I here present are relative to postmarketos wiki, github, gitlab or codeaurora git.
Repositories:
Kernel:
/kubast2/kernel-msm
Wlan kernel module and firmware:
/MotorolaMobilityLLC/vendor-qcom-opensource-wlan-prima
/quic/la/platform/vendor/qcom-opensource/wlan/prima/tree/
For configs I use a twrp image of stock oreo, I will need to use some config files from that backup image in place of the wlan driver provided configs.
Device and proprietary repositories by the montana development team will be useful for reference of existing blobs and configuration files, while other device ports from postmarketos repository will be useful for reference on when they need to be placed within the rootfs of postmarketos:
/montanadevelopment
/postmarketOS/pmaports

Warnings: this kernel has been tested on the TB-X605F (SDA450) only. It will not work for the:
TB-X605F (M10) released with the SDA429 chipset
TB-X605L (M10 LTE). This kernel is currently for the wifi variant only.
TB-X505F/L (M10 HD) or any of the other M10 variants that use the SDA429 chipset.
TB-X605FC (M10 FHD). See the opensource released by Lenovo. Note that the X605FC kernel is 4.9.112.
Introduction
On 4 June 2020, Lenovo released the kernel source for the TB-X605F/L.
Prior to that, this kernel was developed by porting the kernel source for the the P10 (TB-X705F) released by Lenovo in January 2019.
Current version is: 3.18.120 merged with CAFCAF LA.UM.5.5.r1-05300-8x96.0.
The update zip will load some modules. So backup the "System Image", "Vendor Image" and boot partitions with TWRP before loading this kernel.
For kernel developers
Lenovo have released the opensource for the TB-X705F (Smart Tab 10 wifi) dated 31 January 2019 at s000018_20180913_row. This kernel is based on that kernel source (3.18.71). The default config (YM_X605F_defconfig) is almost identical to the kernel config of the M10. Some of the main differences with the P10 source are:
removed the MM8013 chipset config. The P10 uses the MM8013 for battery stats etc. There is no MM8013 on the M10.
upgraded drivers for the primary autofocus camera.
set CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE to "n" - so kernel will load stock modules from any version. Thanks to @yener90 for the suggestion.
While Lenovo releases the (compiled) stock M10 kernel at 3.18.120, the P10 kernel opensource is 3.18.71. Great job Lenovo!
The source will build signed system modules, if you want them. If you want the wifi driver it's pronto_wlan.ko, compile with CONFIG_PRONTO_WLAN=m.
Features
This kernel compiles and runs. It seems to be stable.
Working:
- wifi
- bluetooth
- power charging (USB and dock)
- camera
- FM radio
- touchscreen (including DT2W)
- audio
- OTG

Installation
I assume you have unlocked bootloader, TWRP and Magisk. If not, follow these instructions.
The update zip is packaged using AnyKernel3 by @osm0sis .
if you are still on stock ROM & kernel, backup "System Image", "Vendor Image" and boot partitions in TWRP. You only have to do this once, not everytime you load a new version of this kernel.
download update_X605F_kernel.zip and copy it to your sdcard/OTG
boot to TWRP and use "update" to update the zip file
check that the update was successful, then reboot
confirm the kernel is loaded. It should start with "3.18.120-X605F-YM":
Code:
X605F:/ $ uname -r
3.18.120-X605F-YM-xxx
To return to stock kernel, just restore the stock boot, system and vendor backups you made in TWRP. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to reload system ROM using LMSA.

Lenovo releases the stock M10 kernel at 3.18.120. However, the P10 kernel source is 3.18.71. This means that system modules and the wifi driver need to be re-compiled, signed and distributed with this kernel. This means that the /system and /vendor partitions need to be touched, not just the boot image.

Just disable the modules, the kernel wont build it anymore. It's also not urgently required.

Thanks for the neat suggestion.
I disabled signed module enforcement (CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE) so we can use stock modules. That means no need to update system or vendor partitions.
I left in *_SIG_ALL in the defconfig, so you can compile and sign modules if you really want to. But I haven't included any modules in the new update zip. If you've used the old version of the update zip, then restore stock boot, system and vendor images before using this new update zip.
I've released a new version. Main changes are:
rebased kernel to 3.18.120
merge CAF LA.UM.5.5.r1-05300-8x96.0
added DT2W
fixed "adb reboot". The rebase fixed it.
added a defconfig for LineageOS
included signed modules in zip file (including wlan)
I've updated the OP.
I've added a new (default) branch called msm-3.18.120 in the github repo: Yahoo-Mike/android_kernel_lenovo_x605f.
The camera auto-focus is still not working. I haven't looked at it. Lenovo have not released the source code. It looks like the P10 uses different cameras. The main camera is a hynix hi556 variant called: hi556_m10. I'll have a look at this soon. One of the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M1) variants uses the hi556. That might have a usable driver. There's also a new video driver for the hi556 (CONFIG_VIDEO_HI556) released by intel for the linux kernel.
If anyone wants me to rebase to 3.18.140, just ask.
Latest version fixes camera issues. Camera (Hynix hi556) is now recognised and autofocus works.
I copied the Hynix (eeprom OTP) code from the Lenovo Tab4 kernel source. The code in the P10 kernel source never worked - probably because the P10 was never released with Hynix hi556. The P10 uses OmniVision ov8856 (8MP) and GalaxyCore gc5025 (5MP). Whereas the M10 uses Hynix hi556 (5MP) and Superpix sp2519 (2MP).
This kernel is stable. I can't find anything wrong with it. I've tested it using stock ROM with no issues. So I guess it's safe to load up with the stock ROM (Android Pie)...at your own risk. Just be sure to backup the system & vendor images, plus the boot image in TWRP. You'll need these when an OTA comes along, anyway. The updater-script in the OTA will refuse to apply, because it won't recognise this kernel.
So until someone finds some issues with this kernel, I guess it's time to polish up some LineageOS code...
Two exciting announcements:
prima drivers added to staging
I've added prima drivers to the kernel github repository. It's used by the lineageos_X605F_defconfig to build the wlan.ko module (CONFIG_WLAN_PRONTO).
Lenovo released official kernel source yesterday
The official kernel source for the X605F and X605L has just appeared on Lenovo's support site.
I'll have a closer look over the next few weeks, but here's some preliminary observations:
it is released at msm 3.18.120. This is the stock kernel version. (Lenovo released 3.18.71 for the P10.)
there is only one download for both X605F and X605L. This might be good news.
the autofocus camera drivers for the Hynix appear to be included. I'll take a closer look.
kernel compiles without any changes. I haven't loaded it yet to test it.
edit: I've added the official source to the Yahoo-Mike/android_kernel_lenovo_X605F repo in the official-3.18.120 branch.
The opensource drop for the X605F from last week includes code for the kernel at msm-3.18.120. Surprisingly, it includes a defconfig for the P10. This confirms that the M10 (X605F/L) and P10 (X705F/L) are very similar.
I'm going to test Lenovo's kernel source on my TB-X605F this weekend. Is there anybody with a TB-X705F/L and the skills to build and test this code on their P10 ? PM me and we can coordinate.
The only differences I can see are:
Code:
m10_msmcortex_defconfig | p10_msmcortex_defconfig | Kconfig definition
----------------------- | ----------------------- | ------------------
| CONFIG_BATTERY_BQ27x00=y | drivers/power
CONFIG_CAMERA_TAB5_M10=y | | drivers/media/platform/msm/camera_v2
| CONFIG_CAMERA_TAB5_P10=y | drivers/media/platform/msm/camera_v2
| CONFIG_FOUR_PA=y | sound/soc/codecs & sound/soc/msm
| CONFIG_SENSORS_HALL=y | drivers/input
CONFIG_TP_MP_DIFF=y | | arch/arm64
The TP_MP_DIFF setting is used to load different firmware for the touchscreen drivers: one set for the M10s; another for the P10s.

Great find! I've successfully built the kernel and was also pleasantly surprised I could use the browsable menuconfig (like the setup for my Linux Desktop) after using the P10 defconfig i.e.
Code:
make -j24 ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-android- O=out p10_msmcortex_defconfig && make -j24 ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-android- O=out menuconfig
I've disabled requiring signing of loadable kernel modules, as well as generated some modules for USB-to-Serial chipsets I use (pl2303.ko, ftdi, etc.) for projects.
Now to test the Image.gz-dtb: I have not had much luck unpacking boot-TB-X705F_S210120_191029_ROW.img and repacking with my tools. I just end up on a blank screen on the P10.
Do you have a recommended set of tools that have worked with your M10?

Glad to hear it compiled for P10.
I use AnyKernel3 to inject the kernel for me. It can also load kernel modules, if you build any.
I use these properties in the AK3 mod script. Modify it to suit your purposes:
Code:
# begin properties
properties() { '
kernel.string=X605F kernel built by Yahoo Mike @ xda-developers
do.devicecheck=1
do.modules=1
do.cleanup=1
do.cleanuponabort=0
device.name1=X605F
supported.versions=9
supported.patchlevels=- 2020-06
'; } # end properties
Then in my script I copy the kernel to AK3 root directory and modules to ./modules/system/lib/modules directory (or vendor equivalent) & zip it all up.
Code:
# zip it all up, ready for installing in TWRP
# this zip will replace kernel, plus any modules you included (if any)
# don't forget to TWRP-backup boot, system and vendor images
# also good idea to copy /system/lib/modules/* and /vendor/lib/modules/pronto/*
cd ~/tools/AK3
zip -r9 update_X605F_kernel.zip * -x .git README.md *placeholder
adb push update_X605F_kernel.zip /external_sd/
Optionally, you can also create a "version" file with something like this (before zipping):
Code:
MY_KERNEL_IMG="$(pwd)/out/arch/arm64/boot/Image.gz-dtb"
MY_KERNEL_VERSION="$(make kernelversion)"
cd ~/tools/AK3
# create a "version" file
MY_ZIP_DATE=$(date +'%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S')
MY_BUILD_DATE=$(stat ${MY_KERNEL_IMG} --format=%y | cut -c1-19)
echo "**************************************************" > $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
echo "unofficial kernel for Lenovo Smart Tab M10 (TB-X605F)" >> $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
echo " version: $MY_KERNEL_VERSION" >> $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
echo "compiled: $MY_BUILD_DATE" >> $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
echo " zipped: $MY_ZIP_DATE" >> $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
echo "**************************************************" >> $MY_ANYKERNEL_DIR/version
The Lenovo opensource seems to be working on the TB-X605F. The modules are also building and installing ok.
There is something odd about the device tree, so make sure you use Image, not Image-dtb.gz. When I used the dtb kernel, I kept getting the dreaded "Qualcomm HS-USB Diagnostics 900E" mode.
I'll add a "lineage-17.1" branch to the github repo. It includes an M10_lineageos_defconfig for building the kernel and modules, and wlan.ko source from CAF for Android 10:
Code:
June 01, 2020 LA.UM.8.6.2.r1-07600-89xx.0 msm8953_64 LA.UM.8.6.2.r1-07600-89xx.0.xml 10.00.00

I can get the dtb kernel to work by replacing the arch/arm/boot/dts/qcom/ directory from Lenovo's opensource with the same directory from the "msm-3.18.120" branch of the repo. It boots fine with the stock ROM and LOS.
The "msm-3.18.120" branch is based on the original P10 opensource from January 2019.
So yes, there is definitely something screwy about the dt blobs from the June 2020 codedrop.
Not sure if this would be a valid kernel or not - On the back it says model is TB-X605F. I
In settings it says hardware is TB-X606F and so is the software.
It's the m10 gen 2 tablet. I believe Mediatek chipset.

The CPU-Z app from the playstore will tell you which SOC you have.
I added pstore/ramoops support on branch msm-3.18.120. I have no idea why Lenovo never configured pstore/ramoops in the first place.
The ramoops device will dump console-ramoops, dmesg-ramoops-0, pmsg-ramoops-0 into /sys/fs/pstore/.
I'll add pstore support to TWRP for the TB-X605F in the next update. I'll use this branch (msm-3.18.120) to build the kernel.
I'm hoping pstore will tell me why GSI images fail to boot when installed over stock Pie.
Hello and thanks to all of you to invest so much time and effort. I'm not the best in this android world so forgive me if I ask something stupid Recently I got a Lenove Tab M10 TB-X605L and well I rooted it (with magisk) to use Linux on it. As I said I don't use android so much and I just got this product as present so when I saw this post I thought If I can put a new Kernel why not compile it with NetHunter Kernel and give it a try. After some effort (I'm not sure if it will work) I made the kernel. My problem is:
1st I rooted my Tablet with Magisk (as the same way you mentioned in another post) after the rooting I download twrp from google play. Till here all is good. Now:
TWRP is working when I boot it. But asks for a Password. I tried some swipe data, cache etc. but still I see that PASSWORD field. I can't pass it. (And when I pass it without Password I can't see the kernel neither yours nor mine)
I don't care what happens to my Tablet as I said I'm not a android user. I would even would try a crazy Idea even if its end with a dead tablet but I would really wanna check if the compiled NetHunter kernel works.

TWRP will ask for a password if you have a password, PIN or pattern set on your tablet, and/or your data partition is encrypted.
If you have a password or PIN set on your tablet, try entering that. If you had a pattern, try this.
You can unencrypt the data partition by reformatting it and then installing Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt.zip (created by Zackptg5). Just be aware that this wipes all your data and breaks OTA updates. (Magisk also needs to be uninstalled before OTAs work.)

Remember: android recovery (twrp) uses the kernel in the recovery partition, not the boot partition.
So, where are you injecting your kernel?
If you are injecting your kernel into TWRP's recovery image, which kernel do you see when you issue this command?
Code:
adb shell uname -r
If you are injecting your kernel into the system ROM's boot.img, then you won't see your kernel in TWRP. You'll see the kernel with which twrp was compiled.
BTW...interesting project. Good luck. Let us know if you get it working.
Hi there,
I just compiled your kernel source you've uploaded on the Github (official branch) with m10_msmcortex_defconfig. Then, I flashed it to my device with anykernel 3, also included all modules, but the wifi does not work(It cannot be turned on). Before I flash it, my device was running well at the stock firmware, so I wonder what's wrong with my compilation.
After that, I also tried to compile the lineage branch, with lineageos_tbx605_defconfig. I flashed it to my device running well on AOSP 10(project treble), but the problem was same as the official source.
Could you please tell me that what's wrong with my compilation or how to compile it to work well? Thanks a lot .

It sounds like the wlan_pronto.ko module is not loading. That's why wifi is not working.
It might be easier to build the msm-3.18.120 branch with YM_x605f_deconfig. That should work.
It does not force module signature checks (CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE=n). So the stock wlan module (/vendor/lib/modules/pronto/wlan_pronto.ko) should load ok.
If that fails, check the kernel log (dmesg) for errors loading the wlan module. Let me know what the errors are.
official source
The stock wifi module won't work with the kernel from the official branch because CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_FORCE=y. You'll have to download the wlan source from CAF and build it with the same signature. That's a lot of work.
I also had some DT and dm-verity issues with the official source.
lineage-17.1
The lineage-17.1 branch includes the CAF wlan module (in drivers/staging/prima) for Android 10.0. I'm not sure why it's not working for you. Check the kernel log for wlan load errors.
The included CAF wlan module (and your GSI system) are Android 10. Your vendor is Android 9.0 or 8.1. Maybe there's a compatibility issue ? I'm guessing. I haven't tried that kernel with a GSI ROM.
