Moto X (can bootloader be unlocked)

Thinking about the Moto X, the GSM edition, not the developer edition because I understand the developer version comes in white back and black front. I want all white Moto X. So because I am not getting the developer edition can I still unlock the bootloader??? I tried checking before asking this and could not find the answer.

it depends.
if you buy the t-mobile one on motorola.com its unlockable. if you get the at&t one it is not unlockable.
if you buy a rogers canada one its unlockable. if you buy a telcel or claro latin america unit they are unlockable. if you buy a mexico nextel GSM one it is not unlockable (some people are holding out hope that its a mistake and will have its IMEIs added to the unlock list..).

If you're asking if the BOOTLOADER can be unlocked, as of right now, no.
If you're asking about carrier unlock, then you can go by sleepy guys answer.

Well, it's not a "no." Like the poster said above, it depends on your carrier. VZW and ATT are a no go.

I have a Latin America Moto X (Movistar Chile), but when I try to unlock the bootloader, the Motorola Page throws me "your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking"

I have a Fido Canada version of this phone and I'm trying to unlock the boot loader but it tells me I'm not eligible . i know the my phone is the same as rogers. Why am I not able to?

Carrier needs to provide Motorola with the OK to allow the unlocking the bootloader, obviously Fido hasn't given them the OK, see if you can return it and pick up the rogers version at full price and use your Fido Sim card,you shouldn't have to Sim unlock as we all know Rogers is Fido's parent company

Okay well my phone is on contract. Im pretty sure the Rogers and Fido phone are the exact same. I don't think they would trade mine in for a rogers. Is there any other way to unlock the boot loader? Will there be one in the future?

Basically the problem is some carriers are not giving their imei lists to Motorola to have those phones in the unlock program. Thats probably why there are some Latin America units that can't unlock

Being Fido makes no difference, it runs the Rogers firmware and is unlockable. Its looking like several people have tried to unlock bootloaders today(including me) and the Motorola website has said they are not eligible. So my conclusion at this point is that the backend server that handles the codes is down/broken.

For the Nextel Mexico XT1053, It has been confirmed that is a mistake as can be seen in this thread on Motorola's Website. They are working the issue, but it may take more time.

Wrong. I contacted Moto. The GSM unlocked version is NOT bootloader unlockable. My unlock code does not work. I am sending it back.

If the carrier doesn't want Moto to let you unlock, you can't. Motorola's web site for unlocking will tell you your device doesn't qualify and there is nothing you can do.

As far as which motos that can not be unlocked 2 are unable, Verizon and AT&T consumer versions, all other motos have the unlockable boot loader to date.
If you have attempted to unlock and get ineligible, then your imei has not yet been entered into motos system. When calling the "not the Sharpe's knifes in the drawer" folks at moto, please establish what you wish to unlock your BOOT LOADER not SIM UNLOCKED because they normally ASSume the sim

The off contract, GSM unlocked phone has nothing to do with carrier's wishes. I have this phone with an activated TMO sim and it is not eligible for unlock, period. This is sold directly by Motorola and is supplied with a TMO sim. TMO has no issue with bootloader unlocks, so it's not the carrier - this model is not bootloader unlockable.

Been there, done that. I was told by Moto that my off contract, unlocked full price GSM Moto X shipped with the Tmobile sim is not bootloader unlockable. The two people I spoke with fully understood the difference between sim unlocked and bootloader unlocked, and also knew that bootloader unlocking automatically voids the warranty except on the Developer version.

So your situation is totally different than any other situation, normally T-Mobile phones are unlockable, so Motorola has itself made your unlockable

Update: Moto just sent me a note saying that their system may not be updated with my IMEI yet, but once it is, the warranty is automatically and uncategorically voided when I apply for the unlock code. Since it's the 32GB version, I'll still RMA it and get the Developer version instead. It's the exact same money and unlocking the developer version does not void the warranty.

Think you need the DE.

It was my understanding that the standard VZW X didn't have an unlockable bootloader, and only the Developer Edition X for Verizon was unlockable.
i.e. the Developer Edition X for Verizon ships with a locked boot loader, and you go to the moto site to unlock it. Once you get that code, the's phone warranty is void.

Is there anyone with a moto x on vzw that can just verify for certain?

I just tried my phone, and it said I can't unlock my phone.

Oh, and for that matter, I assume a developer edition should just be unlockable by doing fastboot oem unlock, just like the Nexus devices.

Unfortunately the X is not a Nexus... or like the Moto Xoom for that matter.. See -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sxgz7jxRMw which is someone going through the process of unlocking the bootloader on his X. It does require sending moto data from your phone as part of the process to get the unlock key.

It doesn't void the warranty until you actually unlock the phone, so no harm in trying. Plus it's a work phone and they don't do insurance, but will buy me a new phone I think. So no worries.

Yeah; I ended up ordering a Moto X and getting it this weekend. I tried it too and no go; I hope some day, Moto or VZW will reverse their policy and allow bootloader unlocks

DEV Editions have unlockable bootloaders without voiding the warranty. An unlockable bootloader allows you to flash a recovery not signed by Motorola (like TWRP or CWM) which will allow you to flash root and other .zips.
Non-dev editions on AT&T do not have the ability to unlock the bootloader.

No, you'll be able to unlock the bootloader, root and install any of the methods that give the hotspot feature.

I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and MotoMaker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
When it comes to hardware, the GSM Developer Edition (XT1053) is the same as the T-Mobile or Carrier Unlocked/Unbranded (XT1053) and uses the same ROMs. The big difference is getting the unlock code from Moto for the non-dev edition voids the warranty. When it comes to the (CDMA) Developer Edition X for Verizon, they too are identical hardware, but as said, you can't get the unlock code from Moto unless you have the Dev Ed. (Note: for a brief period, there was a Chinses site selling the codes, but it was shut down and is not presently available. No one knows for sure if it ever will be again)
If they are the exact same price, get the dev edition so you can unlock the bootloader without voiding the warranty.
If you have ATT, know that their X is the XT1058, you can not get its bootloader unlock code from Moto. More importantly, by specs it supports 2 additional LTE bands (originally said to only be used outside the USA, but lately there has been talk that ATT is using one of them in the USA now), but does not support HSPA on AWS (used by t-mobile for non-LTE 4g, but t-mobile has been reframing their 1900 from 2g to HSPA in some areas). So if you have AT&T but got the gsm dev, you'd be at risk if ATT starts fully using one or both of those "other" LTE bands in the USA in the future.

As for "hot spot"... There is hotspot software in the X ROM. Since the gsm Dev uses the T-Mobile rom, it might work as is on ATT without modifications. You'll have to look that up. But there are other options to remove any "entitlement" checks (there are threads about it) or you can use WiFi tether when the Dev Edition is rooted.

I like developer. I think developer option has better opportunity than others.

I'm stuck on Verizon but I absolutely need a phone with an unlocked bootloader for what I'm trying to accomplish.
From what I can tell the Moto X seems like a good option. Unfortunately, what I've read seems to imply that the Verizon version's bootloader cannot be unlocked. Is that correct?
So other than getting the developer edition of the phone (which is obviously much more expensive), do the Verizon Moto Xs from the online motorola store have an unlocked bootloader or are they the same as one purchased from Verizon?
I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was unable to find a clear answer. Would really appreciate if someone could please clarify.

Get the Developer Eidtion for Verizon. I think it's on sale ending today. There's a coupon code floating around I saw that will take off $100 dollars or so.

WHen it comes to the Moto X for Verizon there are 3 ways to get it... Developer Edition (on Moto's Dev Edition web site), Moto Maker edition (Moto's web site), or Verizon store (aka Retail edition).
The Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon have their bootloaders LOCKED. Motorola does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code. The only way to unlock it, would be if the Chinese Middleman (see thread in general section) is still available and selling codes, but he hasn't been as reliable lately (some users have received wrong code, some have received message back saying no code available).
They use the same rom, radio, baseband, etc. They have the same software pre-installed, the same features, etc.
The Dev Edition comes only as Black Front, woven white back that says Dev Edition, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), 32gig, and unlocking the bootloader does NOT void the warranty.
The Moto Maker and Retail are basically the same, except available as 16 or 32 gig, fully customizable front/back/accents, and unlocking is not possible via Motorola. The only possibility is IF the Chinese Middleman will sell the code.

There is no "fix", and likely will never be. AT&T won't let you unlock your bootloader. Neither will Verizon. You could sell it and get a Pure Edition (XT1095) and use it on AT&T if you want to unlock your BL. That's the "fix". There is information everywhere about how AT&T and VZW don't allow unlocking on their carrier-branded variants.

Look on the bright side, If you have a "PURE" edition, then you're in luck as far as the resale value goes.
Also if you don't require root, you can get the "locked" ones on ebay for under $300 right now!
I was bit by the "Locked Bootloader" issues with Vzy and Att. Just recently, I bought the xt1096, saw the threads here, waited, then bought the ATT xt1097, waited, and now I'm getting a new PURE GSM version. Next time , I'll look for the specific Unlock-and-root instructions b4 buying. Life would be simpler if carriers would stop locking us out of these devices that we own.
