[Q][APPS] Reqs 4 Nook HD+ Video Games/Emulators: Diablo, SNES, RPG, etc. - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ETA: I have DL'd a few free video apps I found and now can play the videos I have already downloaded, so that makes me happy!
(Thanks for the commented requests!)
I also am using this tablet for Graphic Novels/Magazines/Comics/etc with lots of pictures in mostly pdf and sometimes those strange comic formats I am so far unfamiliar with, Web browsing and Facebook and Email, and possibly for the first time trying out some cool games!
I am more focused on finding the BEST video/PC game EMULATORS I can find, and if they do cost a little bit, that's ok, I am willing to shell out a few bucks if it will get me a really good Android tablet copy of these games:
-Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (SNES)
-Diablo Original (PC)
-Super Mario (SNES)
-Super Mario Kart (N64)
-Any real decent RPG fantasy games (Skyrim), and some that resemble the 'Mystic Quest' and 'Legend of Zelda' older 8-bit game interface.
-Any good quality Zombie or Apocalypse FPS type games, particularly resembling 'The Last of Us' and similar.
-Steampunk style games (Bioshock Infinite), and would love some of those simple graphic, mystery-based games like the old 'Myst' first-person view style...
It would be like Christmas to get these on my tablet!!
So thanks in advance for suggestions and help! You guys are awesome!

I would recommend the Archos Media player (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.archos.mediacenter.videofree) it does a great job in scanning the files for covers and meta. You may find some of your files don't play properly. You could buy a codec pack from them, or just use this instead (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2)

another vote for MX.
It plays everything I've ever tried. also allows fast forwarding, rewind and volume
controls merely by touching side to side or up or down.
also does zooming and cropping very nicely.

Considering the Nook!

Hi guys!
Im in deep love with the nook! And im not too far from buying one.
But im a bit confused! What is the nook able to do with the available custom rom?
I mean, will i be able to play Avi movies with no problems if i install a custom rom? i will write down my needs and you can answer whether theyr possible or not lol, probably easier.
- Readin documents Pdf mainly
- Music (TuneIn aswell)
- Light games such as angry birds, tank hero
- MOVIES Avi, mkv and so on.
Idc if i have to root or install a custom rom. I just need to know if the needs is possible in any way..
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.
The froyo rom can play avi format along with many other formats. The stock rom can only play mp4 format. If you don't want to root the device, you can convert the video file by using handbrake, a free video conversion software. Nook is a good device for browsing the web and watch okay quality videos.

Do you have a nook sir?
If so, can you tell me if the froyo rom will help me doing all the jobs PERFECTLY?
64 views and no answers? :s
Froyo is not ready for prime time - however NC rooted with 2.1 is more than enough to meet your listed needs -it can play various video formats - just need to get the right player - i use mVideoPlayer and it plays mp4 plus the added plus of importing subtitle files. RockPlayer plays a whole slew of formats including avi and mkvs. I use handbrake to transcode my avi files to mp4 coz who wants to be lugging that huge file size around?
I would recommend rooting and using the stock ROM. I would only use Froyo if you need to watch flash video. (You'll definitely need to root to get the Market, Gmail, and Youtube vidoes)
(Overclocking it is a nice bonus to gain some more speed.)
Edit: and the 64 views is likely a lot of bots browsing the forums.
Okay. I have one clear last question:
Can it play AVI's (Notice i need it to play avis and not mp4s) With NO LAG on a stable rom, at the moment? Thanks!
I have two nook colors. One for my wife; and one for me. You can watch avi videos on the froyo rom. It is actually pretty smooth. I like the froyo rom because it is very stable and fast. The only issue is that you have to put it to sleep and wake it up when the screen becomes a bit lagging. You can view PDF files by using acrobat reader. For a 250 device, it is well worth.

Do the avi videos LAG? I mean, the pictures cant follow the sound or sumthing?
I too am considering the Nook Color. Sounds like a great entry-level tablet, that once rooted, can give you a great Android Experience at a mere fraction of the cost of newer tablets.
However, I'm likely to wait until the CM team comes out with an official ROM for the thing, as I value stability and smoothness in my devices.
I'm really exited to hear they may even be able to use the on-chip Bluetooth (the chip used has been shown to have Bluetooth hardware, and there has been at least one successful test). Using the Nook Color and a Bluetooth headset to use Skype would be a killer feature!
I'm keeping an eye on developments, and if there ever is a CM ROM for the NC, I'm very likely to buy one.
I didn't notice the lag when I watched the avi video. I also converted the avi videos to m4v format and it worked great from the stock rom

Depends on your avi bitrate and resolution. At 800kbps and 640x360 rock player is smooth and good quality
Note trying to play full 1080 p on tablet is not ideal - after all you only have a 7 inch screen and a lower screen res

I think BT has now been enabled -- but with problems. Let's hope the community finds a way to pair (properly) a blutooth headset.
Woohoo raised this thread from the dead for no apparent reason! I'm fairly sure the OP has either gotten a nook so he'd already be reading about BT in the forums, or he's moved on to something else. Either way why resurrect this thread?
I apologize. discovered the thread via search engine.... did not pause to verify the date!

[Q] Nook Color Video playback Question

time for another round of noob questions
I have been tossing back and forth the idea of getting a nook color and a archos 70 it.
both are in the price range that i want 250 to 300.
both have a large following and have good community support , but after my experience with my hd2, i am leaning towards the nook color, as xda is developing for it
I am planning on running android 3.0
mostly i want to use this for video playback and lite internet useage.
now here is my question:
for video playback on the nook color, will i have to convert the video to a specific size / format? or is there a player /w codecs that will allow me to watch videos with out that step (i think the archos has this)
If so, what program can i use?
thanks!
You won't be able to playback anything 720p.
There are some video player (i use mobo player) that play sd video fine. There is no HW acceleration for anything else than mp4, it use the CPU. So I think HD is prohibited (didn't try)
About android 3, i think you can forget it until google release the source code.
I have used a program called DVD Catalyst 4 to rip my DVDs into a format that's suitable for viewing on the Nook Color. Program is great in that it comes with pre-defined settings for the Nook Color (as well as a bunch of other Android devices). It's also a steal at $9.95.
http://www.tools4movies.com/
So far it's handled almost everything I've thrown at it like a champ. I've done about 140 GB or movies so far (about 90 to 100). They play and look great on the Nook Color.
I use handbrake to convert for the Nook. The iPod touch preset works great.
With that said, hardware acceleration only works for the stock and Froyo ROMs. Honeycomb does not support anything above CPU decoded divx.

Does that convert from MKV to Nook? I have a TON of MKV's that I'd like to use.
or you can use handbrake. google "handbrake nook color" for instructions

To be clear, mkv is a container format that can be played using third party apps like moboplayer on the nook just fine, its just that the encoding of the video within the container must be within the confines of what the nook can handle reliably. So you could encode a video in h.264 baseline at a resoultion below 854x480 pixels and wrap it in mkv format and it will play fine in apps that support mkv on android.

I Do!
DVD Catalyst 4 converts your DVDs (original, iso and folders) as
well as all common video files, including MKV, MPG, VOB, MP4,
AVI, DIVX, XVID and more, without the need to install additional
software.
thread necromancy.
I just got my nook color 2 days ago ( i ended up getting a g tablet, and i just got rid of it)
Rock Player Lite will play any videos with out having to convert them

I thought they'd implemented Hardware Video Acceleration in CM7. Am I wrong about this?

Good to hear.
So is it buttery smooth playback for preperly formatted MP4 files, like the stock 1.1.0 Nook Color?
I'm interested in CM7 and will probably start using it (maybe the Phiremod version) once the sleep issue is fully resolved for a stable relase.
Yes. I've got 854x480 (max size for NC) videos encoded @ combined audio/video bitrate of ~1780 kbps running fullscreen with no issues at all.

best hd/ video player?

I tried rock player lite, but it doesn't play hd vids very smoothly; I transcoded Star Trek 2009 to mp4, and its very jerky and doesn't play smooth..
Any other video players that you guys might recommend?
thanks so much; lovin' this damn thing!!!

The best I have used so far is MoboPlayer (http://moboplayer.com/moboplayer_en.html) You have to use the medium version since the Xoom doesn't support Neon. This is the only player I could get to play 720p video smoothly. Hope that helps and if you find something better let me know!

I tried this and it works the best out of all i have tried. Make sure you get the medium version and not the Neon version.
unfortunately, mobo player does not recognize .m4v files, which is how I have saved my ripped Blu rays..

tried renaming them as mp4? usually does the trick for me if i recall. the two formats are almost identical.
I have had no trouble using the stock video player to play 720p videos encoded into a mp4 file. I would go that route and use the hardware decoding

thanks; doing that, and encoding 720p instead of 1080p seemed to fix it!
Any news on the android version of VLC??

The Xoom can easily handle 720p videos. I haven't tested 1080. It all depends on how you encode the video.
From what I've seen on the threads and in personal experience, there are really only two viable players: the Android native video player, and RockPlayer. Between these two, you should be able to enjoy all your video, provided you have encoded them correctly.
I hate converting videos, thats why i use mobo. Its played all my videos great. Much better than Rock played, vplayer advance same spot.
found one!
Vital player will play everything for me, including 1080p videos that I have encoded with Handbrake..
Loving this thing!!
rockplayer and the stock video player handles blu rays i convert with handbrake very well
I tried different players and playback quality is mostly the same. Perhaps minor, but I like the interface in mVideoPlayer - posters, IMDB links etc.
I have said it before and Ill say it again. Your best bet for video is to get PLEX. As of this writing it is still not Honeycomb ready. As a beta tester working with the devs, I can tell you that its playing video like a champ on my Xoom and a release to public should be coming very soon.
what good is telling us that here if WE can't download it yet?
you should wait until its released before you keep posting that here..

Two reasons really.
Lets face facts that the majority of us here own a Xoom because we are Android nerds and already own a Android phone. So purchasing Plex on your phone will give you access to it on your Xoom when its available. In truth you can install it on your Xoom already, the video just does not work in the current release.
Two there is no quicker way to know about its updated release for Honeycomb compatibility then to have it already installed and letting the market inform you.
Lastly this is a community page and a community OS, so keeping others informed is kind of the way things work. If you have a problem with someone telling you that there will soon be an app released that will do X, but you cant have it yet, mumble quietly to yourself, but keep it to yourself.

QQPlayer is free and doesnt want any special permissions
Hi,
I use QQPlayer. It plays everything I have thrown at it and it does not need any special permissions to install.

I'm still using Mobo. I just played a 1080p Meet the Fockers avi I got from a torrent site over HDMI on my big TV and everything was perfect.

Obviously wasn't high profile or it would have stuttered without sound.

Various Video Format Playback (i.e. AVI)

Hey everyone,
I thought this was an appropriate place to discuss the viability of multiple video format playback on the legend. I've been trying out all the different apps that claim to be able to play an impressive array of video formats, but none of them can play a simple avi video file (even though it says avi support/playback in the app descriptions). Most just crash, or the video just doesn't play.
So, my question for you is, have any of you discovered a way to watch avi files, or any other video formats on the legend without flat out converting it to a playable format? (ex wmv, 3gp, mpeg are the ones supported i believe). Post your comments/thoughts/experiences! Not so much a question as it is me creating a thread for the discussion of app development for this problem (not technically a problem), or even integration of this added functionality to our fantastic bunch of ROMs cooked up by our friendly neighborhood devs.
Thanks,
Michael
I think there is nothing we can do about the inferior hardware on Legend. Compared to the N8 and C7 that Nokia gave me, the same ARM11 cpu but the Nokia came with Broadcom GPU that does include hardware video acceleration. It plays 720P with ease.
With rock player I did watch avi files.. (the normal 700mb files)

no its doesn't.
It will play .avi files but not 100% smoothly like on pc... but it is playable.
and note: yxplayer is not working for well on android 2.2 and it doesnt work at all on higher > 2.2
yxplayer sucks. Rock player is really the only decent multi format player. Unfortunately doesn't work very well in CM7
I have been using summer player on cm7 and it plays avi files.

Seaman player is the only one that worked smooth for me on cm7 nightlies playing the 700mb files

Moboplayer ... It is free, and with a bit of fiddling plays avi and most other video formats I throw at it.

[Q] Watching dvd/bluray rips ?

i am considering buying the HD+ for mostly media playback.
I would like to hear about your experiences with playing ripped dvd/blueray movies on this device.
thank you.
Watched Star Trek the other night. Was a Blu Ray rip to around 2.6gb. Downloaded via tTorrent direct to the (additional) MicroSD card (32gb)
Played great in the Archos player. Audio and video in sync. Subtitles available as well.
I roll my own bd rips with makemkv and handbrake.
plays great on the HD+ with MX Player
I crop 4x3 HD content (star trek etc..) to 960x720 with mx player zoom feature it fills the HD+ screen
only cutting just a bit of the top and bottom...looks great at full screen.
thanks
I appreciate your info. I think I am going to pick up the 32 gig version.
would the HD+ have the battery life to last for 8hr's ?
I work 8-12 hr shifts with lot's of free time to kill.
again thank you for the info.
I use DVD CATALYST to rip dvd's - with the NOOK HD+ setting...movies are stored on my micro SD card and look great on the nook played using the built-in video player.... whether the battery will last as long as you like, I can't say... haven't put it to the test yet.
