How much storage space is available to us on a brand new device (both the 16GB and 32GB options)?

i heard the stock OS uses 6.5GB. if that is correct it would be 9.5GB and 25.5GB of free space.

I'm not sure where you got that number from. Even on the nexus 4 or 7, pure stock takes up only around 3.5-4.0GB. From the MotoX my friend has, it showed 11.88Gb of 16Gb right out of box. There isn't any bloat at all except for two att apps that can be disabled, but it requires a little extra space than pure stock due to the moto apps.

That number came from a Verizon x
And the x isn't a nexus, so it is definitely larger than a N4 or N7

Not being a nexus doesn't change the fact that it is close to pure stock as you get with just the moto apps added in. MotoX doesn't add any of the stuff Samsung or HTC does like the bloaty touchwiz or sense ui.
The 11.88gb number is from an att unit. But that doesn't mean the 2gb difference is due to carriers. I'm betting that guy installed his other apps on there before reporting that number.

Oh trust me, Verizon bloatware is pretty horrifying

Active notifications is an app, so it falls under the app category, not system OS. Again, the motoX also has active notifications, so the app isn't going to magically use 2GB more space on the maxx. But I noticed you have 32GB that could account for the difference since larger internal storage reserves more space for more general formatting than a 16GB.

Before I loaded my games and apps I had about 12gb of free space on my X

I had 11.88 GB when i first start my MOTO X Rogers virsion.

Nexus 4 hardware update incoming?

Yesterday, GSMarena posted that the N4 will be updated with LTE and a storage bump as well. 16GB and 32GB for 300$ and 350$ respectively.
According to the leaked manual of the N5 the 32GB was said to cost 450$. According to GSMarena the N5 will cost 399$ and 450$ respectively.
IF THAT IS TRUE, who's upgrading?
The N4 16GB costs 400$ in my country as it is.
P.S: I'll buy the N4 because of budget constraints, will be my second Nexus phone, after the Nexus S.

I'm waiting next year for the price cut like they did with the Nexus 4. I could buy it now, but it wouldn't be cost-effective.
That would be ****ty for Google to release an LTE version of the Nexus 4 this late in the game.. Anyone who is anyone knows the N4 is already LTE capable... To charge for a legit version is just a **** move
Sent from my Nexus 10
Don't think I can believe this rumor, don't know why Google would do this, They had 4 7 10, now if tis 4 5 7 10 it would just confuses buyers, and the screen size isn't much of a difference anyway. Also Google always had just 1 Nexus device a year, why two all the sudden?
I'd still get the N5 because it have the hardware for hand free Google Now voice interaction like the MotoX, which the N4 don't.
We already knew what happen with some of the previous false rumor like project road runner and theming engine. Just taking a quick glance at AndroidGeeks is already enough to tell me they are putting this up for more viewership than journalistic integrity.
First rumors were $299/$399 for 16gb/32gb.. now $399/$450...
THESE are all rumors... Dont believe it until you hear word from Google themselves...

the LTE capable is only 1 band... if google releases a refresh N4 with all bands of LTE, then it wouldnt be that bad, dependent on pricing of course...
Suppose it does come with all lte bands. I mean with Verizon and sprint you'd still need cdma for calls and I guess that leaves you with tmobile or AT&T still with a lte n4

i hope that's true. if they release a 16gb lte capable n4 ihope i can flash it to my og n4! then i won't have to worry about enabling lte every time i flash a rom update

it's only a d**k move if they release it with official band 4 aws only. then all it would mean is they pulled it and had a fire sale because they got fcc approval on the exact same existing hardware setup
If there was a Nexus 4 "LTE" coming, it would have had to hit the FCC. I have not heard anything about that one. I will be getting the Nexus 5 no matter what happens. Just hard to believe so many rumors and believers of the nexus 4 "LTE" where there's no leaks or FCC filings known.

FCC is closed. Bluetooth certification for a LTE Nexus 4 appeared recently. Its going to be a reality now I guess.

If this is the case it will suck for us who want to sell our current N4 to get an N5 unless the LTE N4 is not sold at such a bargain price.

Reports are saying its the same model number as the current n4, so it will most likely be a software and radio update to current owners,

Exactly. There's no chance a new N4 is being released, it's just going to be a patch for the current radios.

You had this closed once. I for one will keep my Nexus 4 even though I could get one,4+ or5. There is plenty of life in the nexus 4.im happy with it as is as I get hsdpa + speeds of 15mb/s +.
I'm not insecure enough to need the latest version for no reason at all.

No More Updates for the Moto X

I was doing some research on the processors of the Moto X and discovered that it is using two of Texas Instruments' processors. As we all found out when 4.4 was released, the Galaxy Nexus ceased to receive support as it as well used a TI processor. And now that TI is quickly leaving the mobile business, are we to expect the Moto X to lose update support as well?
TI left the SoC industry, they didn't leave chip making entirely. Qualcomm makes the SoC, TI makes co-processors that help the SoC. There shouldn't be any issues getting further updates, provided VZW/Moto/Google approve them.
Exactly, this is too far of a reach. My guess is that the the moto x gets updates for 18 months like the galaxy nexus.
Personally I think Google should extend there updates to 18 months after the phone is sold not from when it came out, but that is there policy.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
As "imnuts" indicated, the TI chips in the Moto X are still in active production. Regardless, the Galaxy Nexus was retired for Google's reasons, not TI's.

imnuts, I remember you from another XDA board, I don't remember which phone it was for though lol.
Anyhow, do you have the Moto X? If so, what do you think of it? I have the Note 3 right now and I'm considering the Moto X with the $150 promo code I got on Wednesday.

I just got the moto x and love it so far, but as far as the update thing goes I think since most carriers only let you upgrade every 24 months that Google should continue update until 24 months after the phone stops being sold through retail or upgrade options! My opinion of course but if I bought a phone 18 months after it came out hum mm you know Verizon then they should support that device longer! My phone may be 18 months on shelf but I only just got it! Again my opinion!

I was going to originally get the note 3.however I saw that Motorola was doing a promotion. Now I'm expecting my custom moto x to come in on Tuesday.

Rate of Development?

I have the $150 promo code and am thinking of getting a MOTO X as a secondary phone. However, am I under the impression the DEV community is not jumping all over this phone based on the amount of threads/posts?
I also own a Nexus 5 which of course has tons of ongoing developmen but it has its quirks and issues, despite its low price point now being matched by MOTO X.
I would hate to buy the MOTO X as I notice very little development going on for a phone which has now been out for @ 3 months. I don't want VZW as I already have a primary VZW Dev Edition Galaxy S4 (whose development is now starting to thin thanks to Sammie locking it up for those not owning a dev edition).
Was thinking the GSM unlocked version was the way to go since I have a Straight Talk SIM.
Now that the MOTO X is more affordable with perhaps more owners, will dev pick up? Comments?
Custom roms that are cm based lose the Motorola fun stuff like active notification and touch less control. Also, most are finding you can customize almost anything cm like with xposed. Also we can't make custom kernels yet.... So there is not much need or demand for custom roms.

Thanks for the info! Not really a CM guy..more AOSP. But I do like exposed framework when needed. So it sounds like this phone is worth it right out of the box, i.e., fun factor. I would probably appreciate the option of not spending hours flashing, etc like I do on my N5/GS4.
I have a couple nandroid backups.... And mess around with xposed. Can do a lot with it. If there were a bunch of roms, I don't think I'd be flashing them anyway. Don't see the need. I think that's a common feeling.... So demand is very low for them.

down the road when we stop getting official Android updates.... That's when the custom roms will come in handy.

Devs will fix things, but right now, there's not much to fix, software-wise. If Motorola/Verizon stop updating the phone (I guess we don't have 4.2.2 yet, but sounds like it will be coming soon), then maybe it will pick up. I have the Vz Dev so I unlocked the bootloader (because it wipes everything on the phone, so I wanted to get that out of the way) and if I didn't need AdAway, WiFi tethering, and TiBu (I was shocked how many apps the non-root backup apps such as Helium can't do), I'd still be unrooted.
The stock android is great. Motorola just added a couple of useful apps the rest is AOSP. Xposed works great. This phone is a daily driver not a secondary phone trust me you won't regret it Android at its best.
Bit the bullet.. Ordered it and in process. Airjacket case was 50% off as well and I got $10 Google play credit and another 50gb of Google drive storage.

Android OS killing my data package

It seems that Android OS is using a ton of data. More than anything else on my phone.
I only have an 8gb package with Verizon, and the OS has used 800mb already.
How can I find out the culprit?

Try a data monitor app from the play store.
My guess is, as always, something to do with location services, or at least an app using location services.
Try turning it off completely for a day. And see how it is then.
