[Q] Moto X off contract? - Moto X Q&A

I live in USA but do not have social security number because I am a student, (I am not a U.S. citizen) so I can not sign any contracts with carriers. I really want to buy Moto X and use it with AT&T, do you know if they are planning to sell it for full price?

i literally just got back from the ATT store, they wouldn't sell it to me without an ATT account

The regular price is showing $579.99 on AT&T's web site. That is way too much for the phone considering the Nexus 4 is $350 and can be used on T-mobile without any contracts. If you really want this phone then I would say walk into a AT&T store and see what they can do. Even though you don't have a SSN there may be special exemptions for students.

That's really hard to consider Moto X over SGS4 Google Play edition considering the same price, and people say the camera is really bad
Will have to take a look at Moto X in store today

Look at the review samples or even the "photos" thread here in the X general forum.

You can sign the contracts without SSN, all you need to do is pay a $500 security deposit, they will return it to you within a year if you pay your monthly fee on time.

I went into my local AT&T this morning trying to buy one off contract. They couldn't get the transaction to process though so the manager called support and was told that Motorola/Google are not allowing the Moto X to be sold off contract at launch.

Yeah, they told me that they won't sell it off contract for the first month

i bought mine sort of off-contract. but, instead a month-to-month "contract". pretty sure it would be pointless to buy this phone outright from AT&T. it's entirely locked down to AT&T. until someone proves otherwise, i'm unsure this "GSM" phone will work off their network.
i could be way off...

I'm on the $60 AT&T GoPhone plan. I was able to walk in buy one no commitment with no questions asked.

unbelieveably it is vailable in Future shop, Canad off the contract. I got mine on the release day. Even the future shop sales rep was shocked that usually system would not allow him to sell outright at least for a month...

Not sure if you can get it without a contract, but I paid full price (I and under contract for another year and not yet eligible for an upgrade). I paid full retail, which in the store rang up as $540. Not sure why, since the web site shows $579.00, but I won't complain about saving $40.
BTW - the store I went to said they wont stock 32GB versions in store, they will need to be ordered online. I bought a black 16GB Moto X.

So if I walked into an AT&T store and buy their Moto X full price, will they let me unlock it to use it on T Mobile?

[Q] Sim lock

Hey,
if I buy the phone at full retail price without contract, is it then locked for sim cards as well? I cant find this information anywhere.
I'm thinking about buying it and take it home to europa. Thats why im asking.
Thanks
It might be, considering it's on Verizon, but I'm not sure if it'd even work in Europe. It is, primarily, on Verizon's CDMA bands and presumably the SIM is only for roaming usage, I'm not really sure if it would work to just buy it in the US and take it back home.
You can buy the overseas equivalent, which is the Milestone 3 and should be available(if not now, then soon). The Milestone, unless I'm mistaken, is GSM primarily.
If I have undesrtood correctly, Motorola Droid 3 works on European WCDMA networks. They advertise phone like "3G works more than 125 countries".
I have same problem. I want Droid 3. I have heard only one comment about Droid 3 Europe edition. It says that Milestone 3 comes to Europe in Q3 or Q4. News also say that it will not arrive to UK.
Only problem on Verizon model is hotspot restrictions and contract needed. I don't want pay 30$ for 2GB, because unlimited data costs 15$, in Finland..

At droidforums.net guys want to take it to the uk, sim already insert.
It is defenetly working, my question is now, do i get it without contract?
The thing about waiting and buying it when it gets released at europa is no point, because when i buy it now for 460$ in the us, it means 340€ (if you now a Stewardess you do not even pay taxes and shipping). When it gets released here it might be around 450€, normally they change it 1:1.

Verizon wants to keep Droid 3. Still, if you buy it with cash, you must take Verizon to Operator.
I'm not sure, will BestBuy require Verizon use, because they are Verizon branded.

He has over 6000 evaluations, i'll see in a few weeks.
I have always watched Droids Google and Verizon marks, and I like them(as stupid as it sounds) and if models come to eBay or somewhere, I'll buy it.

Yes, it is SIM locked even if you buy it at full retail price without a contract. If you're a Verizon customer and meet a handful of qualifications, Verizon will unlock the SIM free of charge. Beyond that, the only way to get it unlocked is to wait until some online vendors get codes for it. Once it's unlocked, it should work on pretty much any GSM network outside of the U.S.

[Q] Sprint Release AND Sprint MotoMaker Date?

SO yes...
What are we looking at for a release date and MotoMaker on Sprint? I am on Sprint and am PUMPED about this phone
Copying and pasting the same thing I wrote about Tmo in a different thread, except it applies to Sprint as well.
All black and white will be available for Tmo on Aug 23. $199 on contract, but off contract pricing still unknown. Motomaker for Tmo in November.
Play store version sometime before the end of the year. No clear details on timing or pricing, except that it could be around $350-$400 range.

At&t won't sell me a phone

At&t won't sell me a Galaxy S5 with out a contract plan. Currently I'm on At&t Gophone and tried to purchase a phone yesterday and they said completely not. The only retailer that would was Bestbuy but of course there phone is $100 more. I'm thinking about going to T-Mobile prepaid since they said they would no problem. Uh decisions, decisions. Has anyone else had this problem with At&t.

Best Buys in my area we're always jerks and wouldn't match carrier retail pricing. They would for contracts though.
It seems like it's dependent on store management on whether they will price match carrier full price.

Well I was able to get Bestbuy to price match Amazon's 699 price which I am happy enough with. But its just irritating that stores make up there own policies. Some one won't price match at all, some are saying they cant sell unless its on a contract, and one said okay and gave me the $50 off.
Sent from my XT1034 using Tapatalk
Being a corporate retail chain aren't they supposed to follow the corporate policies that Best Buy has in place, its not like they are a franchise and can do as they please. They are supposed to follow the rules, but then again thats why I buy from Amazon.

I got Best Buy to price match and regretted it; maybe buying outright is ok but whatever you do keep them away from your plan/contract. I don't trust them at all at this point for anything.
They screwed us up badly at our last upgrade (a simple 2 phones - 1 plan) and we spent at least 2 hours/week for 3 months getting it sorted out. The AT&T rep it eventually escalated to was mystified as to how the Best Buy employee had altered so many points of our plan without noticing it could not work for us, even offering an upgrade on a line that I thought wasn't eligible for 2 more months. We stopped in for just my upgrade so we should have recognized that something was wrong when that happened but I had lost track of how far apart our upgrades were and she was reading it off our account screen (or so it seemed).
Our bills for that 3 month period totalled almost $2000 as Best Buy had left it. Somehow we were billed full price for the ineligible device as well. It took a while but AT&T wiped it all away and even gave us a bill credit for the hassle. The AT&T rep joked that we had to promise to avoid Best Buy for our next upgrade in exchange for the credit. Apparently this is not an isolated problem.
On the plus side it realigned the upgrade dates for our lines when AT&T restarted our original plan so I got this S5 and she got a M8 on Sunday.

Will the american Nexus 6 be unlocked?

Do you think the american Nexus 6 will be unlocked even when bought on contract? Sometime similar to how all Verizon's devices come unlocked??
The Nexus has never been locked even on carrier subsidy. But Verizon does things in mysterious ways....
HTC One M8
I hope not. I'd like to be able to buy this on carrier subsidy as I'm due for an upgrade and would like to not have to pay full price. Don't plan on moving off AT&T anytime soon, so yeah. But if the device is bootloader locked on subsidy I'll be pretty frustrated.
I'm betting it'll be just like any other subsidized phone. I doubt they'll lock the bootloader but carrier lock I'd bet on.
I'll blow a gasket if AT&T locks it down as I too have been due for a upgrade for years and since ive decided not to jump ship then I might as well get something out of it by buying a subsidized phone.

Locking a Nexus bootloader is sacrilege. I highly doubt that would be the case. Verizon didn't even lock the bootloader on the GNex when they had it. Can't speak for carrier locking though, as after that GNex debacle, I buy my phones off-contract.
what is the benefit of buying phone from carrier vs google store? granted carrier will subsidizes upfront cost of the phone. is there any other benefits when buying from carrier over google store?

Exactly. Same thing with ATT if you buy it unlocked(google play, no contract) then you simply pay $15/month if your on mobile share plan. If you take a two contract(subsidiy) then you pay $40/month. If you do ATT next you pay a lease fee of $30 dollars or so monthly plus the $15. So its more expensive monthly but you can pay the phone off when you want.
So two yr vs unlocked, $40-$15=$25(the difference). So $25/month x 24 months=$600(roughly price of phone.
In short, its the same thing, they always get their money, its just over what period they get it, you still pay. If you have the money buy it from google play, and have a cheaper monthly bill.
it will eventually be unlocked

I know some of you said something about carrier unlock. So does anyone here know what the chances are that AT&T unlocks the carrier lock so that we can get OTA updates just like the unlocked version from the Play Store?
Trying to avoid paying $649 all of once, so if I can get the same phone from AT&T while making installments using Next, that would be awesome.
I'm assuming that the carrier phone be the same exact phone as the unlocked one, only difference being carrier lock.

I would like to avoid paying $649 as well by using my AT&T upgrade (no plans to leave so may as well take the discount)...however I won't buy a "compromised" Nexus. Worst case scenario I'll buy a S5, Note 4, or even iPhone 6 on contract and then sell it on eBay to make up for paying the full $649 for the Nexus 6.

But what if it's not comprimised? I mean if you can change it to be exactly like the one you can buy from the Play Store, what really is the difference? Big IFs because we don't know enough right now, but I mean I would be certainly fine with turning into a "Play Store Edition" if I have the ability to do so.
If I can't, then yeah, I'm definitely not buying one from AT&T. I'd rather just get it straight from the Play Store and just pay the full $649 up front.

If it's not compromised, then it's a no-brainer for me to buy the cheaper one.
If it's compromised but still possible to change it to be almost exactly like the one from Google, then it's just a question of do I prefer to workaround the compromise or is it simply easier to buy the Google version and then use the contract to buy then sell a flagship phone on eBay to recoup the difference.

True but what difference would it make if I, for example, bought the phone from AT&T at full price to avoid the two year contract and next program? I'll still end up paying the $20 or so a month of the subsidiary cost of a two year contract phone. You still end up paying almost double the price of the phone through AT&T's lovely loyalty customer gets f***ed program. Now let's say you're the financially smart guy that decides to buy the phone elsewhere and just use AT&T's service, you may save $100-150 on the cost of the device(which is a significant savings) BUT you still end up paying that $20 or so a month in subsidiary cost over the life of your service. Either way you look at it, you, the customer gets F****D! ☺

to be a nexus, it has to have the option to unlock the bootloader. so, to answer your question, which is supposed to go into q&a, not general.. no, wont be bootloader locked. but, in the same idea, it can be sim locked. which no one knows, except verizon.
edit.. got moved to q&a
This is the first thread I've seen about this device on Verizon, good work op!

lol thank you
Does it really matter? Verizon doesn't have any information in regards to a Nexus 6 release, if you want the phone, you would just purchase it from Motorola/Play Store/etc already and not count on Verizon to offer the phone. It'll work on Verizon network anyways.

Can someone enlighten me how purchasing Nexus 6 from Google is a viable option for Verizon? I understand you just need the chip, but plan-wise, there are no cheaper plans which remove the price of the phone in the plan, right? In other words, you can get the phone working, but aren't you still paying their high monthly rates?

Well actually we do know it won't be sim locked, Verizon can't legally sim lock a phone that uses their LTE network.

Yeah but that goes for any phone you would buy from Verizon. You can save money if you know what you're doing. I got the droid turbo subsidized on launch day, sold it on craigslist and bought a note 4 for cheaper on craigslist the same day. Then I did it again to get the nexus. Technically I spent less than $100 to use those three phones since the end of October (when the turbo launched).

OK, I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something like how T-Mobile's charges less for their plans if you pay monthly for the full price of the phone. I even looked into their prepaid plans, and they're almost more expensive than the subsidized ones... Do you receive any discount on their Edge plan if you supply your own phone? Sorry if this is a little off-topic.

Oh no, that's because T-Mobile doesn't technically subsidize the devices, although obviously you pay less overall.
I'm not sure about a BYOD policy with the Edge plan, but I do know it's a very costly plan for what it is. As I mentioned, a little wheeling and dealing can get you a new device whenever you want for a whole lot cheaper.

If you supply your own phone for Verizon the monthly charge for that line is $15 not $40 (the price on contract). This only applies if you are not currently in a 2 year contract. You have to call them and they will switch it to $15 for the line which is the same price as if you had edge. The price for data remains the same.
Yet another useless thread :good:. First it's Verizon reps, now Motorola reps, what's next? Reported, hope it gets closed.
If there is any further questions about the N6 on Verizon please use this existing discussion thread.
