Custom kernel and maintaining slow charge rate? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Is the slow-to-charge behaviour of the HTC One hardware based or controlled by the kernel? I'm running the Bulletproof kernel but I want to ensure that the charge characteristics are the same as stock (for battery longevity).
Assuming the use of the stock OEM wall-charger, and USB fastcharge left off in the kernel, should the charge rate be the same between stock and Bulletproof?
Thanks in advance.

Yes it will be the same if you left USB fastcharge off in the kernel installer, btw I recommend you try faux's kernel and you can download the faux kernel enhancement app from the play store and you can tinker with the settings using the app anytime you want instead of going through the installer and it has really nice settings but anyway I digress

Thanks very much for replying. In kernel terms all I really wanted was the stock kernel with the ability to write /system (which the stock kernel disallows). Bulletproof seemed to be the closest to stock I could find, but I'll checkout faux as you suggest.
Thanks again.

Yup, which is what I'm trying to preserve while using custom kernels. I'm trying to work out if the slow-charging is imposed by the hardware or kernel.
Thanks.

Ah I see. I think it's the hardware as all kernels have the same charge rate. You don't need to worry about battery longevity unless you plan on keeping the phone for 3 years +

Cool, that seems to be the prevailing theory, I will go with that

Undervolting saves me battery life. And, more importantly, all you have to do is change your kernel - not that difficult.

I wouldn't go lower than 925mV kernels for the Nexus One.
Use a good kernel and a good ROM, and just by doing that, you're got better battery life. Oh, and never, ever, EVER, use a task killer. They're completely pointless.

Most ROM's have at least the stock kernel built in, but it's usually safe to flash any kernel on any ROM, so long as the OS matches.
Make a backup before you do anything. If you've got a working ROM, back a nandroid backup, then flash to your heart's content. If the phone decides not to boot, just yank the battery and then boot into recovery (hold trackball + power button) and restore your backup.
thanks for the help
are there any recommended kernels for cm6 rc2 right now? I'm looking to get the best battery life I can with out damaging my phone

Try the 925mV CFS 1113 Mhz kernel from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=693375
If you don't install setcpu it will stay at the stock 998 Mhz, so don't worry about overclocking if you don't want that.

[KERNEL][I9100G][2.3.5]MyGKernel - CWM5, Root, CIFS

Hi, this is my first compiled kernel for Samsung Galaxy S II I9100G. Compiled from Samsung's latest source code. Compatible with DZKI1 firmware.
No mods or optimizations yet - I just added CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6 I pulled from another kernel.
Credits:
nunon4 - for pointing out link to rooted kernel here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18744675&postcount=85 - this was where I pulled the initramfs with recovery from
Unknown dev who created the above kernel
CLockworkmod developers
Disclaimer:
I'm not responsible for any damage to your phone, other properties or persons due to you using this kernel.
Everything seems to work for me, but I haven't fully tested it yet - please tell me if you have any problems.
Instructions:
1. Downloaded from the attached link.
2. Flash with Odin.
Changelog:
v0
Initial release - CWM5, Root
v1.1
added CIFS support - mount Windows shares using CifsManager from Market
removed debugging information from modules to reduce file sizes
v1.1.1
Bugfix - phone keeps booting into recovery in v1.1
You are a MAN!! Great job!!! looking forward for optimization.
Since it have CWM5, The custom ROM will follow now.

Any chance of tweaking the charge rate in this kernel to allow the use of higher output chargers like the ipad charger that outputs 3 times the current of the stock one? The stock charge rate is locked to 650ma which is close to the output of the stock charger that came with the phone, regardless of which ac charger you use. Don't even mention the charge rate when plugged into a usb port.
my biggest gripe so far with this otherwise excellent phone.
Jacking up the limit to around 3000ma on both ac and usb, and letting the phone draw the maximum current that the adapter can supply would really speed things up.

Do you have an idea on how to go about doing that? I'm actually a novice in this modding business, so I can't really do any original mods, but I can try to incorporate mods that others have done, providing that instructions are provided.
Having said that, I'm actually reluctant to attempt mods that tamper with voltage or current settings like what you're proposing. Maybe there's a good reason Samsung has limited the charging current. I don't want to fry my phone.
For now, I'm looking at mods that improve functionality, like BLN or CIFS. Maybe some overclocking of the CPU/GPU at later stage once I have more understanding of the platform.
Already use it..awesome!! But after that I see a yellow triangle at boot...why?

That's normal when you use custom kernels. It would disappear if you reflash with a stock kernel.
root your phone first, then install kernel flasher, then flash original kernel, and finally install this kernel via kernel flasher and you will won't see the triangle anymore.

This kernel is compatible with the latest MIUI (1.14.0), at least for me
I added CIFS support. Now you can use CifsManager or similar app to mount Windows shares. See first post.

[Q] Kernels + settings?

Hi everybody,
Running ViperROM right now. I want some of the features badseed wolfpack kernel has to offer. Fast charge, logo2menu, s2w, governors, thermal control...
I downloaded it and flashed it over all my data after a cache wipe. I don't see any difference, my kernel version doesn't seem to indicate that it's the wolfpack. How do I use/activate those features? I'm assuming I have to use an explorer of some sort, correct? If not, what? I tried looking it up on the interwebs but nothing seemed to help.
Thanks in advance.

Try Trickster Mod in the play store

Tried it and kernel tuner. They don't have (or don't show) any of the features that the bad seed kernel exhibits.
Am I not supposed to use an explorer? What's up with those 0,1.2 etc?
How can I check if the kernel properly installed?

In settings about should say in kernel info. I remember there is a file you can edit to enable what you want the htc logo to do. Check kernel thread for details. I wish I could help out more but I haven't ran any custom kernels in awhile

[Q] custom rom for xperia TL lt30at ?

i have official jb 4.1.2 firmware 9.1.F.1.120
which custom rom to put in?tnx, sorry for bad english
Honestly, you should experiment to see what roms work best for you. There are a lot of excellent roms on here made by really talented developers who put in a lot of hard work.
I'm currently using Peetr_ 's Hybrid rom. Even with no undervolting (due to locked bootloader), with only setCPU (set cpu profile to 384mhz-486mhz when screen is off) I'm getting insane battery life- 53 hours of standby time without charging and still ticking at 61% (granted, the phone was actually used for an hour.)
Hope you find something you like.

Refering to my post in the HybridRom thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48796459&postcount=1018 Do you know if there is a way to install the stock kernel to a unlocked bootloader phone.
As I have a permanently locked bootloader, I am unable to try out any custom kernels. I do have a Nexus 7 FHD with an unlocked bootloader, and by experience, a custom kernel does help with battery life, as it gives you the option to undervolt the phone, among other tweaks already implemented by the developers of the kernel.
I had a look at the NK kernel features, and it does give you those options. Slight undervolting should help. I suggest sticking with what you have. Remember that the main source of battery drainage would be the screen. My screen is off most of the time, with short timeouts and liberal usage of the on/off button (screen is off when listening to music).
Hope this helps.

I highly recommend ElementalX. IMHO it's the best kernel available for the M7UL (Sense/GPE). Aside from all the extra features I'm getting better battery life and faster performance by undervolting and overclocking my CPU/GPU. The developer flar2 also has an app available for a small fee that is well worth the price so that you can tune all of the kernel parameters. If you are running a Sense or GPE based ROM, give it a shot and see for yourself.

like said above, its a great kernel. Battery life is good but you can expect it to drain a little bit faster depending on what settings you'll use. Anyway try it and if you don't like, you can always flash your stock kernel back.

so there is no risk of bricking my mobile or somthing like that cause previously also on some phones i flashed roms and nothing really happened and i really want to flash this kernal so i think if it is no risk then i should go ahead and flash it
If you are really worried, then just take your time, read the OP for ElementalX and make sure you understand what you are doing. I don't understand how you could flash a ROM and have nothing happen.. If you mean that it worked fine, then yes, you should have no problem with this kernel, it is rock solid.
Kangaroo Kernel is also another good one. I suggest trying elementalx and then kangaroo if you fell like trying something different. The kangaroo script to modify the settings can be a bit "advanced" for some.
