Location issues when network location is disabled? - Moto X Q&A

Is anyone else having issues with apps not being able to use GPS to find their location? Specifically, the weather extension from DashClock and Notification Weather Pro. Neither seems to be able to use just GPS to find my location. I must have network location turned in in order for them to work. That doesn't seem normal to me.

OK never mind, Notification Weather Pro seems to be working now. DashClock still can't find me though. Probably something wrong with DashClock.
edit: Yep, just DashClock. I installed it on my S4 Active and it's doing the same thing.
2nd edit: First post still stands. Upon Notification Weather's next sync, it lost my location.

Did this just happen yesterday? I had to turn airplane off and on in order for maps to find me and realize my tankcar was actually moving.

Well I installed notification weather yesterday, which prompted this post. I spoke with the developer of the app last night and he said it was designed to function that way. I'm going to assume the same is the case with DashClock. That said, I have zero issues with GPS or any other app that uses location, including Maps.

I've had this problem on my N4 and this phone so I don't think it's specific to this device. If I turn off network location and wifi so that it ONLY uses GPS, it takes so long to lock a location that I just saw forget it. I've had to leave the wifi/network location active basically to have any function of quick GPS polls for things like weather.
my first realization was when I did a factory reset for the hell of it the other day to see if it would help anything. By default network/wifi location was off. I opened up maps to let it load and adjust location settings and it gave me the old "enable network/wifi" jargon which I ignored and set to never remind me. I sat here for 5 mins and didn't get a lock. Turned those settings on and instant gps no problem.
If you figure it out, please update because i'd be really interested too.

The dev I spoke to last night said this is exactly why his app requires both GPS and network location to work. He said GPS takes forever to find your location whereas network location is near instant. That said, I don't think there is any solution because there isn't necessarily a problem. It's just the way it is. Now my question is does having network location enabled cause any more of a battery drain than just GPS?

That's the kicker. I feel like it's a double edged sword. Turning them off IMO would save battery since there is less polling and work being done. But at the same time, when something needs gps, it's going to take longer to get the gps lock which would be more battery. So i'm not exactly sure and haven't done any real world testing yet.

Do you have Google location services enabled?

If so ..why?
Does it consume more battery?
Nope and I would bet it does. Who wants google knowing where you are at all times? (even tho google maps will tell them) Leaving any GPS feature on will consume battery, best bet is to use the standalone GPS and turn it on only when you need it.
I do for beautiful widgets, only turn it on to find the location then turn it off.
Yes I do. I use it for my home automation.
Google's location inst as bad as GPS but GPS is far more accurate.
CM
Yep. I used it to help localized searches in maps.
I've never measure battery life with and without it, but I can get 13+ hours on a single charge under light to moderate usage.
Do you need it for gmaps?
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Not really.
You can still view maps, but your location will be unknown until you activate gps and it gets a lock.
Searches will also be genralized under your current map view.
I have all location services on. When I want to use an app that uses location, I want them to know where I am ASAP. I don't really care if Google knows where I am. I doubt that they really care where *I* am.
I also have VZW location turned on. Of course, as long as my phone is on, they have a pretty good idea of where my phone is, so using VZW location doesn't bug me.
Location services only gives a general area. Normally its a kilometre radius. Google can know my general area I don't care. I keep GPS off unless I'm using maps

I leave all location services on, because I could honestly care less if they know where I'm at. Now once I get into drug dealing or the mafia, or maybe CIA work.then I'll care. =-)
As far as the GPS/location debate.the GPS doesn't technically go on unless an app calls for it. Enabling it, just means an app or service can tap it as needed.most apps only use it infrequently.but not enough to notice a major difference in battery life. Unless of course you're using navigation.
Don't believe me, just try it out for a week. GPS on, then GPS off another week. You be the judge.

This...100% correct. The GPS doesn't do anything until an app calls for it. No battery drain just by having it enabled.
This app is awesome https://market.android.com/details?id=ch.rrelmy.android.locationcachemap it lets you view the saved locations in your phone's memory and clear them out. It even lets you block saved location updates. Cops routinely pull this info off people's phones, so there's no reason to save it (even if you've done nothing wrong)
One cool thing is that when I am at home somehow with ICS it remembers to turn on my Wi-Fi when I get to the house. I don't know how exactly but it does. I have Wi-Fi location enabled.

GPS on google .com

Does your guys vivid find your location on google.com mine says location unavailable I tired everything to fix it and it still doesn't work any advice ?

The GPS thing is odd for me too. It shows me where I am perfectly, however shows my girlfriend sitting over on a nearby airport runway when she is right next to me. She has the Thunderbolt on Verizon.
And to make it even more strange... She sees me over there too but her phone shows her location perfectly.
And it's always off like that... no matter where we are. we see ourselves fine but each other as off by about 1000 feet or so.
Wow that is weird does your location show on google.com ?

Mines dead on and Fast.
Do you receive any pop ups when you first launch Maps about improving your Location?
You may want to turn on Wifi (you don't have to connect to any Networks).
Wifi on speeds the process up quite a bit.
A few years ago Google was in the hot seat for gathering Wifi info while gathering data for Street View.
all third part apps work fine on finding my location maps finds its quick and fast my problem is on google.com the browser in general does not find my location it keeps saying location unavailable

I have the same problem and found a couple more. The Places tab on google .com does not work either. If you hit the Facebook website and try to use the check in feature, it won’t let you. So it’s definitely a gps/browser issue.
same here anyone have any advice to fix this

I've tried contacting HTC about this. Has anyone heard of a possible fix?
AT&T referred me to HTC because they did not have a solution. HTC had me check all settings and do a soft reset but that did not work. I was not willing to do a factory reset. HTC said that since the phone is new they are waiting on customer feedback to see what issues the phone has before they issue a patch. So I guess this will stay an unresolved issue until then.
Any word on a fix for this? I'm encountering 'Location unavailable' in the browser (any browser, actually, tried Dolphin and Firefox) and I can't seem to fix it. I actually DID do a factory reset, no dice (restoring nandroid now).
Maps apps (Maps, My Tracks, Latitude) work fine and locate me whether I'm on wifi, LTE, GPS on/off. Same with widgets. Everything but the browser. It's really frustrating. I've tried every combination of settings, both in the browser and the general phone settings.
For what it's worth, I've been in touch with HTC, and they're looking into it. I won't hold my breath.
My Location
This is so frustrating!!!
When I'm at work My Location (image and info) is correct, but at home my image is correct but my info shows the street behind my house!

If you are talking about the position marker on the map, GPS positions and/or the apps using them can be off. At work and at home, the marker can be as much as 50 feet from where I am actually located. This may be due to the number and position of the satellites being tracked. I have found some apps to be more accurate than others. Personally, I think the Vivid GPS works well, but you are rarely going to have the marker less than 15-20 feet of your actual position -- unless you are a military weapon or a military target.

GPS not working

To add to the many other problems I seem to be having, my GPS has now stopped working. It first worked when I got the phone (a week ago) but now seems incapable of finding my location. All location services in google accounts, location settings, etc. are switched on but it just keeps saying my location is unavailable.
I'm really thinking of taking this phone back at this rate, or at least getting it exchanged because it's ridiculous. It shouldn't be this difficult just to get a phone to function fully.
+1 But am not gonna return it though...

I solved this way:
- Open google earth
- Click menu button
- select "my location"
You are redirected to a setting page where you can switch on gps location.
Hope it helps!

Google Now Showing Wrong City Weather in Lollipop...

Guys,
For some reason the Nexus 6 is showing the wrong weather location card in Google Now. It is showing a city about 40 miles SE of where I live. Has anyone else noticed this?
Thanks,
Y2J
May want to try resetting your device and/or toggling GPS. Also, what level of GPS accuracy are you using right now

High accuracy...I always use high accuracy...
Does it show you in the correct place in maps? If it doesn't use the send feedback button and send Google a report.
Most likely the WiFi access point you are pinging has the wrong location in Googles database.
I've had good results with Google fixing this on two occasions.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I didn't know that it would show a picture of the city you are in. I've been using it since day 1 and never seen anything that resembles where I live. I thought it was just a generic picture....?
Mine has always showed a place a couple miles away.... Thought it was just my device..
I got the same problem, only with google now, other location apps work like yahoo weather, maps, earth, news

Help with 1Weather App - SOLVED

I have used 1Weather for a long time without any issues. Lately I have noticed that the radar takes 15 -25 seconds to load, even though the map and present location load immediatley. I have noticed this on my Nexus 6, my Nexus 5x, Samsung 10.1 G5210, and Samsung SGS III --- all running different android versions.
Have contacted 1weather but they say they do not experience this.
So - can some of you install 1weather, and tap the map icon at the bottom to see how fast/slow your radar loads? I am in OKC area if you think that weather data feeds for this area might have something to do with it.
Or any other ideas - wifi speeds are excellent otherwise
SOLVED - Thanks to all who posted and made suggestions. It turned out to be the wifi router (ASUS). I went down to the AT&T store and tried their wifi - 1Weather loaded fast and so did radar. Bought another router (Netgear) and 1Weather worked properly. Some setting on the ASUS router (on or off I don't know) was the culprit - but I think it had something to do with parental control, because I initially had same problem on Netgear. Then I turned on parental control but did set it to block nothing and that did the trick. Have no idea why, but it's working now. May re-hook up the ASUS to see if there's a similar setting to turn on/off
1weather Google Play Link
I'm in the Dallas area and mine loads quickly. I also have some locations in New England and they load fast too.
At least you got a reply from them. I emailed them a question a week or two ago and they never answered.
I have the app and my Radar seems to load very fast.
I am in the DC-VA-MD area.
So I hate to say, but the problem might actually be with the area where you live.
Mine loads fine as well on Android Marshmallow and Android Nougat. You may consider clearing cache or at the very worst data and resetting up the app if problems persist.

I have actually done that and also rolled back to a previous version...with no success.
I did change my router to a dual band router, but am pretty clueless as to 95% of the settings.
So since you mention the router, are you saying on mobile data it loads fine?

No I have checked that as well. But interesting is that it loads the "still" radar first on mobile, not the animated one. It loads the animated one on wifi 1st.
Well it sounds like your wifi is working fine regardless if data is coming through and its just this app and the fact that its happening on mobile data too confirms its not the router settings. All I can think of is check permissions under the app settings, make sure its got the location access
(im sure it does) as well as storage permissions. Other than that if I cant replicate it then all someone can really suggest is uninstall/reinstall. The storage permission is to cache map data for radar which should be what makes it load faster.

Thanks for the comments. I'm gonna try it at the local AT&T store on 1 of their phones, if they'll allow it.
I wonder if it has something to do with the data source of the radar in my area? Oh well, will keep searching
If thats the case try setting it manually to a diff location. You could try 33411 for example which is in florida.
Just a suggestion...if nothing else works...you might want to try another app such as
Radar Now
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.usnaviguide.radar_now
I use 1weather and it loads radar very fast on wifi and even faster on LTE. Gotta be a conflict with something else on your device.
