Will the S4 Active (AT&T) skip 4.3 for Kit Kat 4.4? - Galaxy S 4 Active General

I was just wondering what you all thought. 4.3 is out, obviously, but with the recent speculation that 4.4 Kit Kat may be released in October, why not jump straight from 4.2.2 to 4.4 without passing GO?
This is AT&T we're talking about (SGH-I537), so am I being too optimistic?

Yes, you're being way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too optimistic but it's still a good thing I suppose.
I say this because I've noted it: I don't think the Active will be available much longer, and I say that because I was in Best Buy last week just after I bought my GS4A off craigslist looking for a battery and a case, and of course they stocked neither, and b) I was in Best Buy yesterday and they don't carry the GS4A anymore, at least not the store I was in.
Last week they did, and they had a floor sample/fake model on display, with the tags, etc, info, and even a brochure explaining the difference.
Yesterday when I stopped by (looking for some blank optical media) I walked through the exact same spot and the GS4A was nowhere to be found, replaced by the Galaxy Mega so I asked the guy about the GS4A and he said "We don't carry those anymore."
Now, Best Buy still has it listed on their website (the Urban Grey and the Dive Blue models) as well as the Urban Grey unlocked, but they did not carry it in the store directly for purchase. I got home and called two other Best Buy locations here in the Las Vegas region and was told the same thing: "We don't carry that in stores anymore..." and of course the sales people are clueless about why.
The Galaxy S4 Active just isn't selling well, and the negative press it received from owners that couldn't comprehend the basic instructions of "no more that 30 minutes in up to 1m/3ft of water, with time to dry off in between 'dunks' under water..." as well as AT&T giving in to a lot of customer complaints from idiots that didn't read the instructions, damaged their phones by not ensuring the seals were tight on the microUSB port as well as making sure the battery cover is on properly (when you do it correctly and press on that area just below the camera flash it will SNAP - with a loud snapping sound - into position which is THEN precise and sealed).
The overwhelming majority of GS4A owners don't get that, and they damaged their phones by not realizing it and not paying attention to it - AT&T and Samsung even put that sticker or the back of the phone with DIAGRAMS of how to ensure the seal, I mean really - and then AT&T was put into a position of having to replace a whole bunch of the GS4A's recently and it hasn't put the phone in a good light.
So I don't expect to ever see a 4.4 upgrade from AT&T, and I mean never. Potentially a 4.3 upgrade in the next month or two (when the actual GS4 gets it or sometime soon afterward which is rumored to be in October), but never 4.4 - AT&T isn't going to waste time supporting a device it's not even going to be selling soon.
Now, take this all with a few grains of salt: this info I just presented is based on my own experience in a retail Best Buy store in a 10 day period: they had it on the shelf ready to buy and walk out with 10 days ago, and less than 24 hours ago (of the time I'm making this post) they didn't - the same Best Buy here in Las Vegas on both visits.
It's my speculation that the GS4A simply won't be available for sale within the next 2-3 months, by New Year's Eve I'd say. AT&T wants to wash their non-water resistant hands of it, sadly... again, that's my speculation. I hate it, I hate knowing the GS4A is a damned fine device, seriously it is: it's a damned GS4 for Pete's sake with a gimped camera resolution and it's missing a few software features the GS4 has which I could care less about, and it's water-resistant as well and comes in a sturdy package/form-factor that I really like (and the Dive Blue color is awesome, I wanted the International version in Flaming Orange but, alas, it wasn't meant to be).
It's a shame this phone isn't getting more interest, it really is.
So for me I'm waiting till the official 4.3 is released for the GS4, then I'll be on the lookout for someone to dump it so it can be properly ported to the GS4A (because of Safestrap and our ability to run ROMs now) and that'll be what I use until KitKat makes an appearance and I do all that over again.
That is, unless the bootloader gets cracked open like the surface of a planet smashed by an asteroid, of course.

I agree... so sad that this phone won't receive regular updates (
guess we have to rely on the standard ROMs being ported now ...

My backplate never does the loud click you speak of. I have heard people say theirs clicks. The only clicks I hear are the ones around the perimeter of the backplate, never under the flash. I haven't had any issues with water leakage in 5-7 dunks. So I figure it should be good for an accidental dunk. Waterproof was second on my list of reason to buy this variant. #1 was the screen. I love being able to see my screen in sunlight.

Same here. It never clicks under camera but holds up to water just fine. The screen was also my priority and I have to say it is worth every penny.

They're still selling the Galaxy Rugby Pro, even in AT&T stores, and it claims to be water resistant and rugged. That phone is about a year old at this point. I suspect that Best Buy yanked it but AT&T will keep selling it alongside the S4 in corporate and AT&T-branded retailers. Why? Even when (and that day will come) they cut the price of the S4, they can still sell the S4A for a few bucks more because it is different. Going back to the Rugby Pro, the phone it was based on (Galaxy S II Skyrocket, of all things) is long gone but the Rugby Pro persists and at a $100 price point on contract and even got an official update to Jelly Bean 4.1. Hopefully the S4A will follow this same path where it hangs on for a long while, gets a couple of major updates, and its bootloader is busted several months after release.

I had high hopes that I had purchased a semi-mainstream phone that would be updated fairly regularly, avoiding the regular GS4 for the better screen and insulation from dirt/water so hopefully your thoughts are correct. Of course, if we have some heavy participation from the developers here, we are more likely to see future updates beyond 4.3/4.4. I'm already learning a lot more just from reading this forum.

To be completely and totally honest, I don't know you from Adam or anyone else...
My understanding was that you were implying that AT&T was going to drop a 4.3 update later tonight, not that you've created something custom so, I'll take the blame for misunderstanding this time (if I did, that is).

Nah, just have a leak for you guys

You still looking for someone to test, 'cause I'm willing if you're confident it'll work - not sure if you even have an I537 but now that I do know your reputation (did some research over the past few hours...) I'd be willing to be a guinea pig I suppose.
Not a developer, but someone that's been mucking around with ROMs of all kinds for nearly a decade now, from PocketPCs to this GS4A I have now.

Ah okay, well I, as well as I'm sure everyone here, definitely appreciate it! I too would be willing to be a guinea pig if you still need one. :good:

If they skip 4.3 we will be waiting till December at least for an update
Kit kat not expected till Oct/Nov time add then that it will take a couple of months to optimise tw,get it through carrier testing etc we will b waiting forever. They already skipped 4.2 to give us 4.3, it doesn't make sense to skip 4.3 especially when kitkat hadn't even been released yet.

Are you sure you're not talking about a different phone, the S4 Active ships with 4.2.2 and we have a leaked pre-release of 4.3 so I'd say a 4.3 release is right around the corner, and 4.4 will probably come some time next year shortly after the regular S4 gets it.

Bernice619 said:
Google should be showing off new Nexus devices (possibly more than one phone?) in October or November, which is when we are also likely to see Android 4.4 KitKat. With that said, Samsung has announced that it will be updating the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4 to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean sometime in October.

[Q] Check HDR microphone?

Simple question: Is there any way to check if our phone has the STM HDR mic? I know it's possible to check the bin of our SoC's so I was wondering if there's a system file that would allow us to determine the mic in our phones without taking apart the phone itself.
This is an important issue for me since I've just recently gotten the AT&T version of the HTC One in black. I previously had an early silver model that had fantastic audio and would like to see if this current revision has the mic as well.
AFAIK there isn't a way yet, or nobody's bothered to dig deep enough in the kernel source for it
Shouldn't be worrying about this just yet though, last I heard HTC had 2 full months worth of back-stock for those mics so it should still be going out there

Thanks! Not that i doubt you, but do you have the source of that?
Now that newer builds are rolling off the line, has anyone found a way to check what version of the mic HTC One's have? I'm seeing them advertised as "RARE - STM HDR MIC" on listings and am not sure if people are being BS'd.

[thoughts] What the S5 needs to do before April 11th to earn my money

Well, THAT happened 10 hours ago........
The launch for the S5 came and my enjoyment faded pretty quickly. You can see from my track record in my signature that I've been a pretty loyal customer of Samsung for quite some time now, and this may be the first Galaxy launch that I won't have a pre-order in the system. Other than stepping away from the Galaxy line to pick up the Atrix 4G, the first mass produced phone with a fingerprint scanner, coincidentally, I've enjoyed only Samsung phones for the last 4 years. The "premium version" of the S5 was supposed to be 5th in line, what with the 20MP camera, metal body, G-Note 3 battery size, 5.25" screen - you've seen it all and read it all, it didn't show up today. Now unless Samsung is about to pull the biggest stunt they've ever pulled, the Unpacked5 event is in the books and we're not getting anything more than what we got today.
Is there any positive that came out of this event? Sure! USB 3.0 is a big thing for me as I have lots of 3.0 gear and want that from my next phone, it's dust and water resistant, cool fingerprint scanner providing it works flawlessly unlike the one on the iThing, updated TouchWiz which (try not to judge) I actually like a little bit, the wearables, the bigger focus on health, better processor, camera, and connectivity, but then comes the let downs, especially for S4 owners. Same 1080p screen at almost the same size, same 2GB of memory, almost the exact same front camera, soon to be the same OS (again, I like TW so I'm sticking it out on 4.3 until the TW 4.4.2 comes out), same plastic body that I don't necessarily mind, but would have appreciated a little change other than just putting dimples in the back cover, and probably worst of all to me, they're offering it in a 16GB format again after what they just did to us who pre-ordered and / or early adopted the S4, sticking us with next to nothing for internal space because they believe everyone has kids and needs to have likely a ton of space dedicated to a kid mode with pre-installed games and crap. I'm single and not looking for that anytime soon!!! It's like they claimed to listen to their customers but only those who are married, have children, want a "modern glam look," whatever the hell that means, and work out enough to bring their phone with them while exercising!
Damn that's a lot of negatives so far. So what can Samsung do between now and launch to earn my money short of releasing their ultra premium version that was supposed to exist but doesn't, and calling this one the S5 Neo? Let's take a look, and please, feel free to help me add to this list!
Ship the phone with an unlocked bootloader - I know, fat chance, right? But if you don't want people complaining about lack of storage, let us kill it off as we see fit! I also know it isn't up to Samsung on this, the carriers are the ones being douchebags about it, but Samsung put their foot down with them previously by stopping them from dictating all the individual revisions when they launched the SIII, making them all the same shape and size, so why can't they force their hand on this in the sake of making even the smallest group of their customers happy - those that truly use the phone for what it was meant for!
Negate the 16GB version - this is obvious, why the hell is this even a thing anymore with Samsung.... just get rid of it if you're not going to slim down this ridiculously large ROM of yours! Ship with the 32GB at minimum and announce the 64GB as well. iThings do this as a standard now, and while iSheep love to keep their music on their device and we have this little thing called external storage and another little thing called Google Music, we don't have to, but seriously, cut the crap and ditch the 16GB model!
Allow us to remove certain features we just aren't going to use, EVER - as I stated already, I don't have kids and don't need a Kids Mode. If you aren't going to let us root the thing AND aren't going to launch it with more than 16GB, let me get rid of the damn Kids Mode. Or the health features. Or anything else I decide useless or unnecessary. When looking at pics of the camera settings on the S5, I'm able to download more features as I see fit - why not make some of this crap downloadable and not don't ship it with the device? Why not make an Aroma-like installer when you first boot it and say "hey, would you like all of this crap or just some of it?" like any PC software does when it installs something - Typical or Custom installation. Sounds like I'm asking for a lot here, but really, I'm asking to not be forced a lot that I really won't use. And before you comment that if I don't need it, don't buy it in the first place, there are so many things I love about my S4 and TouchWiz that I'm not planning to part with in order to have "a phone," my N7 has a purpose and it isn't so I can keep the screen on when I need it just by looking at it. It does great for playing movies on a trip but not for letting me change the channel of my big TV when I want to watch a blockbuster movie....
Ship with at least the S805 processor for crying out loud - if you're not going to blow us away with something new and powerful, at least ship it with the very latest processor this time from Qualcomm. The 800 has been out for months, the 801 is obviously an incremental update over the 800, and the 805 isn't that much better, but at least give us the goods instead of just going along with the same processor found in the N5 and G-Note 3. I don't think we've heard which one for sure will be included, but from what I've read, so far they say it's the 800 or the 801. EDIT - it's the 801, confirmed by Qualcomm....
Include wireless charging in the box - I shouldn't have to say this, wireless charging is now old technology, the SIII had the capability but not the attention or love needed for Samsung to just release the official cover, the S4 cover took 3 months to post online for sale, and with all the competition shipping their phones with it included, why aren't we able to get it without paying $50+ for it? I used a 50% off coupon to get it for $25, but that's $25 more than I should have spent after being let down on a promise that the SIII was supposed to be able to do it on a phone with nearly useless internal storage....
Sell us some legit accessories this time, namely a car dock - I'm always impressed when people recognize me from my review on the only working car dock for the S4 since Samsung decided to screw around with the whole thing and make my Infuse dock useless. It worked on the Skyrocket and SIII, and would have fit the S4 except it wasn't possible to get the thing working properly by charging and outputting dock audio on it, so it's collecting dust in a box right now. Sure, I get it, you want to sell me something new instead of letting me use the same one for my last phone, and that's different than what you are doing (or didn't do?) with the wireless charging cover, but in this situation, you're not even selling me one! The S4 sold tens of millions of devices, did you stop and think that maybe ONE of them would be going in a car and being used for playing music or navigating that owner safely from one place to another?
?
?
?
That's all I got for now, I'm sure we can come up with more and while I highly doubt Samsung is listening to people like me, one of their 200M customers (I'd like to think I counted 4 times for buying 4 iterations of the Galaxy line), there's always a chance someone is listening. I bet they'll listen when they're trying to figure out why the sales figures are going to be monumentally lower this go-round, that's for sure!!!
A note to fanboys of all kinds, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, iThing, etc - let's keep it clean here, please. You haven't heard me bash anyone else here, even Samsung really, so please don't get this thread locked on me. I'm sure you have witty comments like Nokia and HTC have today, with their "Samesung," "Buyers Remose," and even the most original ones like telling me that you're disappointed or this phone is ugly.... As if we haven't seen those comments before. Be original if Samsung isn't, post something relevant to the discussion if you're going to post at all! I don't waste my time on writing this stuff to insult others, so don't do it to insult me. If you were never considering buying it, you don't have any reason to comment on here because nothing you're going to say will come across as helpful to myself or others. If you were considering buying it or even, dare I say switching from another brand, or actually will be buying this phone - let's discuss intelligently your reasons why!

FM radio..
In Slovenia in past month we have major electric blackdown becouse of mother nature - no internet no nothing.. but FM radio did work.. on my S2 I could still listen what is happening, but on newer device.. bljah.. must have tool which cost them 1 euro cent per device..

I agree with all you say. Particularly about wireless charging, and accessories which get launched with fanfare and then never see the light of day. The other thing they could do is to put one of the new gear items in the box too. That would be a good sweetener. Lol.

NO KNOX!!! Or forget about Custom ROMs and warranty.

How do you know it doesn't ?
Two points here:
1. I see you are American, and that in the US the carriers **** in their customers' heads when it comes to freedom. The international S4 has an unlocked bootloader, it has been like that since the original S.
2. The Snapdragon 805 isn't available yet, sadly.
And why isn't 2GB of RAM enough? I have 300+ apps here, 9 accounts syncing and available RAM never goes below 700MB.
I'm going to point something out to everyone here that wants Samsung to get rid of security features such as locked bootloaders or Knox.
We are the minority. Do you Expect Samsung to tailor to us and risk the average consumer's information and safety so people can run an AOSP build or a custom kernel?
Ship the phone with an unlocked bootloader - I know, fat chance, right? But if you don't want people complaining about lack of storage, let us kill it off as we see fit! I also know it isn't up to Samsung on this, the carriers are the ones being douchebags about it, but Samsung put their foot down with them previously by stopping them from dictating all the individual revisions when they launched the SIII, making them all the same shape and size, so why can't they force their hand on this in the sake of making even the smallest group of their customers happy - those that truly use the phone for what it was meant for!

While I'm not excusing the US carriers for doing this, but why do you think they try to steer people away from rooting and unlocking the bootloader? People mess up, brick their phone, and then try to do a warranty claim on them. They're protecting their profits, and as a business you cannot blame them for that. Anyone else here would do the same thing to retain profits. And what do you mean "use the phone for what it was meant for?" The phone is meant to be a mobile multimedia cellular device, which in fact still does on the software it ships with no problem.

You can disable features you don't need. But just because you decide a feature you think is useless or unnecessary, does not translate to everyone else will think this too. I like the kids mode feature, I've got kids and nephews that get my phone somehow all the time.(Anyone with kids can attest to that too! ) I'm sure people will love this feature.

This is Qualcomm's area right here, ARM cpus are following the development of x86 cpus. Meaning it's reached a point now where development for ARM cores is slowing down, tremendously. We probably won't see any groundbreaking ARM cpu's come out for maybe at least a year or so now, took x86 cpus years to show good and cost effective performance gains.

I do agree with this, but also at the same time there are 100s of other companies making accessories that Samsung does not make.
Samsung is not going to tailor the phone just for one person or a small group, they're doing it for what they believe are the best choices for their devices. Looking at their track record of the Galaxy line up, I'd say they've got it down pretty good.
Why do u need a 2k screen on a 5" device? It eats battery life, it bogs down cpu and gpu performance for something that your eyes can't notice. I cant even see a pixel on my s4.

My wishlist for S5 -Premium
1. 5.2" inches screen in body-size of S4. It's not too hard if they look at LG G2.
2. Radio FM, and playable via loudspeaker.
3. Good camera in low light condition.
4. Smaller bezel, by aluminum.
5. QHD display.
6. Better performed in drop-test, maybe
7. Keep removable battery + external SDcard.
8. Snapdragon 805 or Exynos 64bit octa-cores.
9. Only 1 "main" international version, both have LTE-A, 4K video rec etc...
10. Wireless charging included.
11. Ram 3G
12. At least 32 GB internal memory, like Note 3.
13. Fingerprint inside screen.
14. Max brightness at 600nit, like Note3.
15. Flash Xenon for camera and flash led for Camcorder.
16. 120 fps video recording at 1080p
17. Not too heavy. <150g.
18. Clearer audio recording, noise reduction.
19. Stereo sound on louder speaker like HTC One.
20. A better earphone with improved DAC
21. Sapphire glass for screen and camera lens.
22. Dust and water resistant is good, but I hope it will not affect the bezels.
23. Remove Samsung logo in the front and rear. Just Galaxy.
24. Note 3 fake leather still better than this S5C, or aluminum body.
25. Working, interchangeable for S-pen or any stylus pen, docking, etc
26. Front camera 5MP, rear 18MP
27. Hot plugged battery, SIM and microSD card without restart phone.
28. Include an projector like Galaxy Beam
29. USB 3.1
30. Removable and downloadable all bloatware, Knox, gesture...
31. 3000 mAh battery
32. New flat Touchwiz, it's still ugly.
33. Touchwiz fully runnable in ART and compatible with any pixel density.
34. Free lags, especially open the contacts/dialer must be faster.
35. Dual boot Android & WP, maybe triple with Ubuntu or GPE rom.
36. Update firmware at least 24 months, not like i9300.
37. Not too many versions in worldwide.
38. For some sharing features like Galaxy Beam, Samsung should share this app to works on other Android devices, (now we only have Android Beam).
The same for SS smart watch, smartTV....
39. Still support Adobe flash (it's not SS or GG obligation, but I hope it).
40. Improved airview and air gestures in smarter way than before (Example: hover finger on the links help user preview link, not zooming like now). Open the API for all the sensors function and support the developers to create much good app based on them.

When kitkat was being written all the engineers had to use a smart phone with only 512 mb of RAM.
This will be moot tho with TouchWiz which is the most bloated god awful software on Android. 2gb IS enough yet the s4 still suffered from lag.
With the newer processors not being available yet Samsung should have focused on design. They put zero effort into that. This will be their first flop in the galaxy line. And by flop I mean by their standards. It will still sell millions.

this is so true. people just want a better spec sheet not realizing going above 1080p will actually lower benchmarks particularly with the s800 and 801 being the only SoC available now. To get something you probably wont even notice you will be sacrificing just about everything else performance wise.

Come on It was a pretty common bug on the s4. I have a Samsung tab note 10.1 and it lags considerably.
I've had numerous HTC phones over the years and sense has been toned down quite a bit. sense 3.0 was a system draining nightmare.
I really don't think you can compare a straight android ROM to A samsung rom and say with a straight face this makes no difference on performance or lag.
Just compare the size of a nexus 7 rom to any s4 rom.

Sure, the Note 10.1 is slow, but the problem isn't how light or heavy the ROM is, the lag happens because the Java-based Android Runtime isn't a optimized as iOS, for example.

It's actually dalvik at runtime. Dalvik virtual machine and kitkat is optimized quite well.
When you add a huge amount of code on top of that of course it will change the performance.

[Q] Would you still buy the Z3c today?

Hello from North Carolina, US.
After carrying the Note 2 for two years, I am over the large phone form factor and was considering the Z3c back when it was released. But, I'm on Verizon (CDMA) and it just wasn't a good time to shift to TMobile. My Note 2 died, and I started carrying my wife's old Galaxy S3, which confirmed my preference for a smaller handset. Since my contract with Verizon is over in June, I figured I would carry the S3 until then, see what phones were announced at MWC and make my next phone decision based on that.
Frankly, for my use cases... MWC was MEH.
The S6/edge and HTC One M9 are both lovely phones, but I don't feel like they meet my needs as well as the Z3c. With the Z3c, I love the small form factor, the waterproofiness, the battery and the dedicated shutter button. Also, an S6 with as much storage as the SD card I already own will be hundreds of dollars more expensive than the Z3c.
That said, is it crazy to buy a 6 month old phone? Considering my use cases (primarily utilitarian - music, email, rss, news/weather, social, navigation, camera - no processor intensive games) and considering how surprisingly well the S3 is still running with these use cases at nearly three years old, I am thinking the Z3c may still be a good fit for me. And, I don't want to wait as long as the rumors are saying I would need to wait for the Z4 series (autumn 2015).
What about you, would you still buy the Z3c today? Do you think, based on how I've described my uses, that it would be a good fit for me? Is there another small form factor device I should be considering? Should I suck it up and wait for autumn and the Z4's?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.
Cheers
Jack

For sure I'd still buy the Z3C today.
You're using your wife's S3 which is over 3 years old, so calling a 6 month old phone 'old' is kind of bs (No offense @ all)
As for the Z4, well.... there is no word about a Z4C and based on what Sony previously did, there shouldn't be a Z4C, but a Z5C (if ever).
The Z3C is a great phone, besides the occasional build flaws and bad camera under low light conditions.
That's great feedback, thank you.

None taken. The last 5 phones I've bought for myself or my wife have been purchased within 2 weeks of release, sometimes by me standing in line on release day. I buy them early, use them for 2 years when I can contractually upgrade and get a new one and start the cycle over. I typically use a phone for two years and it starts to feel "old" to me at ~18-20 months when a couple new cycles of phones and android versions have been released. My concern is not that the phone is "old" now, rather that, being 6 months old now, it may start to feel old at 12-14 months rather than 18-20.
Btw, I followed your photo link from another post of yours. Like you comments here, your sample photos are really helpful.

Well I don't know, in terms of specs I don't see much changing any time soon, unless all manufacturers decide to make 64bit phones or use a new type of battery that either lasts long and/or charges super fast.
In the end as long as you're doing 'normal' things the phone should be your companion for at least 2 years without you really noticing a difference between your phone and other people's.
Z3 and Z3 compact are best options on android right now.
implying you don't want a phablet.
new phones like GS6 and ONE M9 are cool but you can find a Z3 for 500€/$ and a Z3C for 400, (gs6 and one ~750$)
you'll have same software 5.0.2 with better UI, and better battery, only the camera will be a bit behind but still excellent.
so unless you have money to waste just go for it it's a good deal
I love my z3 compact but if I were to buy a new phone now, I would get the galaxy s6 edge.
The biggest issue I have with the z3c is the speaker. Currently if I am in a semi loud surrounding, I can hardly hear the other person on the line.

As usual it depends on what you need. Me personally there is no other phone than the Z3c atm. Size/hardware/design... its perfect for me.
So if you're looking for a smaller phone (one hand use) with excellent battery life and fast hardware just go for it there is nothing that comes even close in that department.
I'm very torn right now, I'm frustrated that I would have to use the bloated stock software to get decent camera quality (no barrel distortion and better low light) and that CM12, while it runs decently doesn't support the features locked away by DRM. I'm contemplating reverting back to a Nexus 5...I think my biggest issue would be the camera, I thought it would be superb but in reality it only matches my nexus considering the distortion. And Sony's DRM and bootloader locking nonsense seems ridiculous to me.

That's easy...the hard part is losing all the customizations. I went to stock 5.0.2 rooted, system R/W support isn't there, I lose all sorts of little features like expanded desktop, quick unlock, navigation customization...

Rw is already fixed though you wont like the process if you want to Stay on locked bl. Those features will be implemented either by Sony or more likely xposed working. Just give it some time

Pretty sure Sony is done with us after this update, minus maybe a couple security patches there won't be any new features. I already tried CM12 for a good month, just couldn't stand the camera and the bugs were a bit too much for a DD. Hoping for xposed and working recoveries on lollipop...that's about all I can do right now.

Let's see... The Xperia Z that has been released for about 2 years also received the Lollipop update, why would you think that Sony would stop update a phone that's just been out 6 month's. Can you please tell me your logic?

Nice Features
There are some things which are so nice. Most of the new phones arent waterproof. Phones are getting bigger and bigger. But the z3c is smaller but quite good.
I certainly would buy the Z3C again, the biggest gripe I have is the lack of Quality Case choices. Great phone IMO, size, battery, speed and takes above average pictures(Auto mode) and if you take the time to use the manual settings it can take excellent pictures.
So far, Sony Z3C has no real competition. In android world. I just bought one.

Well with the persisting rumors that Sony is either scaling back or dropping their mobile division...I just have a gut feeling.
And I guess I changed my mind. Just ordered a replacement Nexus 5 like my old one. I will miss the size and it is a sharp looking phone, but the broken features that can never be fixed (mostly camera stuff) and the DRM nonsense really turned me off of this phone. I may be an oddball but I just don't like that I'm missing all the little customizations and things on CM12 when I'm on stock, and Xposed will probably only fix about half of those features. Miss Privacy Guard, Quick unlock, all that good stuff. And I just don't like the UI design choices. Plus all the no-name "device reporting" and "anonymous reporting" services running in the background that can't be disabled.
I'm sure in a few months CM12 will have the microphone & other issues ironed out, but what's the point of having a 20MP camera that has distortion and poor image quality that (from what I've read) can never be fixed in an AOSP rom?
I would recommend it to my fiancee that doesn't use her phone for much more than texting and Youtube, but not for a tinkerer like myself.
FOR SURE! Unless you want to wait for a Z4 Compact to even be announced, and then eventually come out, I'd say the Z3 Compact remains the best phone at it's size from anyone, still to this day. The Galaxy S5 Mini just came out recently, and it's a Snapdragon 400! The Z3 Compact has a great, waterproof build, MicroSD, Camera Button, and 801 processor. Nothing else comes close unless you're okay with a leviathan of a phone I love my Z3 Compact and really do not desire a new phone or ever again something larger...
Would definitely still buy again. Just ticks so many boxes that other devices don't (size, speed, battery, microSD, camera). It really has no competition. I'm not sure we'll see a Z4 compact at all - doubt z3 compact is a big seller and with Sony in such a mess, they may just focus on the Z4. If that happens, we're in bad shape for fully spec'd < 5" Android devices. The good news is that the hardware is advancing so slowly now, the z3c will probably be a viable platform for quite awhile.
My Galaxy S4 (two generations old!) still runs CM12 perfectly fine. It's an SD600!

So, anyone getting a Blackberry?

In case anyone still around is unaware, Blackberry has just released the closest thing to an upgrade in a long time for us physical keyboard users: the Priv.
Brief specs of interest, use your Google for specifics:
A "security-hardened" version of Lollipop (with Marshmallow in the works)
Snapdragon 808
3gb of RAM
32gb of storage, 22gb of which is user-usable
5.4" AMOLED screen (QHD, ~540ppi), Samsung-esque curved edges for doing fun things with
3410mAh battery
18mp back camera, 2mp front camera
NFC
Stereo, front-facing speakers. The first part of that sentence may have been an unintentional lie.
MicroSD slot - yes, in this day and age
Notification light - yes, apparently a proper one
And of course, a physical keyboard - that is not only backlit, but also doubles as a trackpad
Caveats:
The keyboard is a portrait slider rather than a landscape one as we're used to, but apparently it's fairly well-balanced and isn't as horribly awkward to use as it looks like it should be
It's a phone with a 5.4" screen and slider plates, not exactly small or thin - though I would argue the latter isn't a negative
No fingerprint sensor, in case that's your thing
Probably no built-in inductive charging, or at least I've seen no mention of it The US is at the moment receiving model STV100-1, which has inductive charging; the STV100-3 is for the Canadian market and lacks inductive charging but has more LTE bands unlocked
Micro-USB only, and apparently only transfers at USB 2.0 speeds, so that'll be fun
And finally, possibly the greatest negative considering where we are: not only is the bootloader locked, it actively verifies system files at boot to try and prevent tampering. That's gonna be fun to figure out how to root, let alone get CM going on...
Unfortunately, BB has decided to make the bafflingly terrible choice of launching it as an AT&T exclusive, but have said that they intend to release for all major carriers, so (assuming sales are decent enough) we should see a Verizon version around the end of the year/going into next. The radio in the 808 is completely capable of doing Verizon CDMA and LTE, but you know how they are these days. Edit: Verizon has confirmed both via twitter and their site that the phone is "coming soon", so it looks like we'll almost certainly get at least a short run even if things don't go well.
There's also the pricepoint problem: it's expensive at $700, or $250 with a contract.
It's out of my price range for the moment even if it were available on VZN, but it has definitely piqued my interest, and I'll probably find a way to pick one up when/if it's available.
I've been waiting for Droid 5 for a long time so It's not gona happen and I love my new pocket computer, the BlackBerry Priv.......I left Verizon after 8 years to get one. I'm glad they are getting them soon to But I really hope that the QWERTY board will survive cause I Hate typing on a flat screen more then sitting in mindless traffic ...
I love that they released it, hate the security model. My response to the poll would be "Once the price goes down & root and CM is possible."
I prefer smaller phones and I think that landscape slider is much better than portait. The biggest deal breaker for me is the price. That is why I'm not going to buy Priv. I decided to make Android qwerty slider myself. Take a look: Qwerty Keyboard Slider [DIY]
No Blackberry phones. I want a DROID 5.
Maybe a Samsung slider phone, but specs would have to be good. MicroSD card slot. 4G. Not the dollar store variety.
I've had Motorola phones since before the v3 RAZR. and a Samsung slider when the first iPhone came out. But other than that.. I'm on the DROID wagon.
I would if it was landscape, I don't care for portrait much.
i really cant see myself ever getting a priv because of the locked down system. as a vzw unlimited data user i tend to use hotspot quite often and having to go through hoops to get around verizons paywall is a huge con for me.
theres also the portrait keyboard which really doesnt do it for me so maybe if its as cheap as a droid 4
at least i know theres a device i can go to if the world runs out of replacement droid 4s
Still Waiting
Do not like the portrait profile of the Priv. Have a Passport as a secondary phone and it is a solid phone but still prefer my Droid 4 as the best UI and size for a phone. Luckily have Asurion and am on my 10+ replacement Droid 4. One of these days the marketeers of all these "me too" cell phone companies will realize there are some of us out there that prefer this form factor with a slide out keyboard. Looks like Apple just figured out that there is a whole market out there for smaller form factor phones and I think it will be a solid seller. Just cant get used to the glass being the only area you can type in. And when others see me typing on the Droid 4 they realize the superiority of this UI. The keyboard on the Passport is OK but does not hold a candle to the Droid 4 keyboard. It just does not play well with the Google Play store so is only half compatible. The Priv is a full Android phone but it is not build as solid as the Passport. Also the phone on the Passport is incredible.
Can't root the Priv, way too expensive and no cursor keys - nope, definitely won't buy it.

Unfortunately, Motorola got eaten by Google (which was actually potentially promising), then practically given away to Lenovo, and Lenovo appears to have no interest in physical keyboards at all. Given that most consumers seem perfectly happy with typing on glass and trusting autocorrect to catch any mistouches, I don't think the Droid 5 is ever going to be a thing : \
It's sad to see one of the device lines that really helped get Verizon-driven Android on the map just sort of...peter out quietly. It deserved more.
Price is down to ~$400 for a new unlocked unit now, occasionally on sale for around $300. Verizon's CDMA flavor is still around $500 used, looks like. So hey, the pricing situation is sorting itself out fairly quickly.
Blackberry still has a wonky portrait slab with a fixed keyboard and a rebadged all-screen slate coming out, perhaps they'll throw the rest of us a bone and produce a landscape slider if things go well with those...

Should i get a nexus 6?

Hello, i was wondering if its worth getting a nexus 6 sealed in box bought in june 2015 for 250. im just scared of the battery bulge problem, any advice will be great.
I'm using it for 2 years and didn't face any battery bulge problem, at least not yet.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The phones dated march 2015 or later did not suffer the battery bulge problems.

Quite a few people got phones with bad speakers. They make hissing crackling sounds when the battery gets to lower percentages. Mine does this and it's a minor annoyance. Everything else about this device to me is SWEET! I LOVE my Nexus 6, but it's roulette getting a device without the speaker issue. Like I said, minor annoyance and totally usable without too much issue, but noticeable nonetheless. Great phone however, love mine.

Personally I would say Go For It...especially at that price!
I got my Nexus 6 in March of 2015 and Love It. So far it is the best phone I have owned so far. And that is say a lot since I previously owned the HTC EVO, HTC M7, and HTC M8.

Keep your 250 and by a newer model.
In a few months their will be complete new Nexus models.
I am using N6 for about 2 years.
Out of the box the battery life wasn't enough for intensive use between 9 to 17. Cause the white user interface. I needed to unlock the bootloader and root the N6 to change the dpi and install layers and apps with a black background.
The N6 is good but the Google stuff is not.
Personally I would say for the next few months, try to put away $50-$100 each month until the new devices are released. While this phone is still operable for the age it is at, it lacks a few things such as fingerprint scanner and a nice camera. Not to mention the size, which can be off-putting for some.
My suggestion - Save your pennies and buy something with a Snapdragon 820+...That is at least my plan.
For 250.00 its still a solid option. The camera is fine and finger print scanner is not a huge deal. I would say it is a bit better then "operable". You will be looking at spending 600.00 to get the newest Nexus when it drops.
@smokinjoe2122: What do you define as "nice" in regards to the camera?
I personally find the camera to be quite excellent. It's no substitute for a dedicated camera if you have one. At the same time the best camera in the world will not help you if it's sitting in the camera bag when you need to get a picture.
Case in point, this picture would not have happened if I had to look for a dedicated camera in a bag. However, because I had my N6 on me, a seagull casually standing on a car was immortalized. But à chacun leur propre.
None of the things you mentioned, except for the size, are truly dealbreakers. The size can be intimidating, but to gain converts to the cause you simply have to time it right and hope they can keep an open mind. I managed to convert my roommate to a large-screen phone simply by letting her play with my N6 for a little while after I had gotten it. She got a Moto X Pure two months ago and couldn't be happier.
@Simplyeduardo, go ahead and spend the money, but you might want to invest in an OTG drive while you're at it. Especially if the phone only has 32GB of storage on it.
To answer your questions:
Comparing my Nexus 6 camera to my girlfriend's Nexus 5x, the difference is night and day, especially when it comes to HDR or low light pictures. There's also missing support for the latest features such as 4k video.
I also feel like finger print scanners are getting even more important for things such as Android pay and enterprise applications. If you've used an iPhone, many applications can be locked down with security only to be unlocked by the fingerprint scanner or pin. The Nexus 6 unfortunately will never have that technology (Sure you can use a pin, but FP is much better imho).
Lastly, the performance of this phone isn't the worst out there, but it defintely isn't the best. There's plenty of posts here and on Reddit that talk about performance issues, lag, stutters, ect. I for one can validate that, and I have a feeling it'll only get worse as Android will be designed to run better on the newer generation hardware.
So, do you spend $250 on a 1.5-2 year old phone, or do I put away another hundred to two hundred and get the newer generation Nexus or OnePlus 3?
my november 2014 bought n6 has an ever so slight buldge, with the back cover raised about 1mm(yes, barely). i bought mine for the full $650, plus tax. anyways, ive never even considered getting it relaced, as it does absolutely no harm to me or my use. ok, i cant use my n6 under water for sure, or water will get in..
but for $250, i wouldnt even think about it.
With all the development we have these phones are still relevant, and will be for quite some time. I used to trade up every 6 months to a year, but I have had this phone for almost 2 years now and see no reason to get a new one. IMHO a new phone wouldn't be an upgrade anyhow, we would have to wait on development. Just look at all the sweet mods and roms these awesome devs. Have created for us! There's something for everyone. Good luck, Happy flashing.

Question in the singular. I only asked one.
The larger CCD pixels in the sensor do make a difference, I do admit. Especially if using the Google camera app as it is barebones. However, switch the camera app to one with manual controls and that advantage is lost, since it's possible to adjust not only the ISO of the camera, but how long the shutter stays open. If you adjust the ISO to 1600 or more, you improve the sensitivity of the CCD. If you can control the length of time the shutter is opened, more light is let in. Recording more light is the name of the game.
The camera is not a deal breaker. It's a good camera that gets better when coupled with the right software. 4K video is a non-starter to me, i.e. it's irrelevant.
Fingerprint scanners are a security hole, since you can be compelled to unlock your phone without need of a warrant. One of the reasons I DIDN'T spring for a 6P at Christmas 2015 was because of the fingerprint scanner. So, not a deal breaker.
As someone who has used Touchwiz, I'm very familiar with lag. I have yet to see any lag on this device. But not everyone is as fortunate as I am, I guess.
I still would recommend this phone over other Nexus devices. The 1+3 is a tougher sell.
