[Q] Has anyone got a ANT+ heart rate monitor working with any apps? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
As the questions says, I've got a garmin heartrate monitor working with the ANT+ app but I can't get any other app to see it (mainly runtastic pro) - wondering if anyone has any success with it?
N.

I might trying updating to the latest firmware, currently on 14.1.g.1.518.

I've got a Garmin monitor, and a PowerCal monitor running with IPBike. I tried to get the Garmin Fit app working but there's no option to add the sensors.

Iam using My tracks and Garmin heart rate monitor.Works well.Dont forget to download and install ANT Radio Service.

Anyone using ANT+ with anything but the stock ROM?

I'm using rooted stock rom(NUT .757), but ANT+ is not working.

Oh no that is a nightmare. Maybe I won't be upgrading then!
I'm on NUT's .136 and ANT+ is unreliable but just about works. For example when I run an ANT+ app, the bluetooth icon appears. If I close bluetooth, ANT+ stops working! Both bluetooth and wifi continually switch themselves on without any intervention from me on this ROM. Anyway, the ANT+ often mysteriously stops working during a (bike) ride and I either have to toggle bluetooth on and off (twice) or reboot to get it working again.
Good luck, I do not think many Android devs are also fitness orientated.....

Doh, you cannot turn off BT, that's how the ANT+ works on the device.

Interesting - I was using my Samsung Galaxy Nexus with a ANT+ dongle which did not exhibit this behaviour i.e. I did not need bluetooth to be switched on to enable the ANT+. And my understanding is bluetooth and ANT+ are separate radios. Do you know different?

That because Bluetooth and ANT+ are integrated in the same Chip so you have to enable Bluetooth to let it work. In Samsung probably they are separated. Many Manufacturing use different Chips Radio so some can have this behaviour.

I recently upgraded to the latest (4.4.2), lo and behold bluetooth is not activated when I use ANT+

That don't mean Bluetooth and ANT+ are not in the same chip.

[Q] External GPS

Has anyone experience with the connection of the galaxy with a bluetooth GPS ? My car's windows are provided with a heat shield made of a metal film, i can only use a bluetooth GPS in my cars GPS windows.
I would use Sygic.
I'm now using a HTC Touch Pro WM6.5 and it works fine with a Bluetooth GPS
I contacted Samsung with my question but the only answer i got was that i had tot contact route 66 ???
The bluetooth GPS is for me the point to buy a galaxy or not<;
Don't buy any android phone, far as I know, bt gps not supported on android. May be some workarounds for specific programs.

Its a pity that android does not suport external gps.. I'd like to use that too. (I just got a Galaxy S).
I think the galaxy S has a socket for gps antenna on the back (under the cover).. so you can at least try to plug in one of those 5€ ebay gps 1.5ghz antennas to improve signal. Just put the magnetic box on the roof of your car.
As I've replied in the GPS Poll thread, I believe TrekBuddy supports external GPS just fine, so I wouldn't think it's Android limitation rather than a choice of the programmers of most apps - IMO they just don't bother supporting external GPS when there's not a single Android device that doesn't have internal...(I guess).
I guess you got a point when you say that all Android devices have a gps chip embedded. But I sill think it's an Android limitation not supporting an external gps.
On Symbian devices, you just have to say 'use bluetooth gps' in your application once you've paired it.
In WinMo the internal gps has a com port, so does the external when you hook it up. Again you tell the gps software which com port it has to use.
This kind of association does not exist inside Android. You can hook up a external GPS, but no program will access it. The OS itself doesn't have access to it.
BTW I looked this up, but I could not find what chip goes inside the SGS. Is it SirfStar III? Can anyone confirm?

It is a Broadcom BCM 4751 chip. Designed on a friday afternoon, after a long, well-wined lunch. Or so I heard. But I hear a lot of nonsensical rumours.

Beowulf_pt did you manage to redirect data from external GPS?
I can read data with "bluetooh GPS" aplication but i did not find any redirect software.
I have a Hollux receiver that say's 10 satelites in use rather then 8 of the galaxy.

You got me wrong. I'm not trying to use the BT GPS with the SGS as that is currently not possible in android. No native stack support nor navigation apps that use the units over the internal GPS. Only that little experimental app that reads NMEA data but has no real use. I hope Android gets this in 3.0 but I doubt it.
What I will try to do with the Samsung is to connect it to an external amplified GPS antenna (1.5 GHz) via the connector on the back of the samsung (net to the SIM card).
I have not recieved the antenna yet so I can't comment... but it should at least provide some better SNR results.
PS: I also have a Holux. It is quite nice, I use it a lot with my Nokia E72 and it works fine unlike the SGS

I can understand their decision not to invest time in this as all android devices have an internal GPS... but time has proven that that is a bad idea as many units have really poor GPS. The Galaxy S is probably the worst of them all.
Without the ability to use an externa receiver you're pretty much screwed... no alternatives at all.
Guys,
Did any one try this app ?

The free version is a trial, it disconnects every 10 minutes or so. The full version is 1.99€.
I tried the free version with two of my bluetooth devices (Holux M1200 and ncs-navi 150), seems to work fine with both.
BTW, with JM7+voodoo fix combination, the internal GPS has been quite satisfactory so far (touching wood...)
Has anyone experience with this application yet ?
Bluetooth gps seems to have a bug. It seems to update it's location and after that sgs will give its location, what happens is that it starts switches between the two locations every second
If you turn gps location service off from android settings, the lag is gone.
However, an app named "gps provider" does not lag in the same way. I think bluetooth gps mouse app will have updatea, where this problem will be fixed.
Other than that the location is very precise using an Nokia LD-W3 bluetooth gps.

What you mean with "quite satisfactory"? Does the internal GPS get a fix without A-gps support? I mean without being online?
I use GPS Bluetooth mouse unlimited on a daily basis with Motonav , Sygic or Navigon.
Internal gps receiver AND Mobile networks( A-gps) are disabled on my sgs.
My external gps receiver got a sirfstarIII chipset . In a hot start I get a fix in less than 20 seconds. Otherwise 4 to 6 minutes in a cold start.
Once again no need for internal gps receiver and / or A-gps (celular network) for for a fast and stable satellite fix. Pure GPS navigation pleasure...
Offline GPS navigation = Freedom
And it rocks on my super-Amoled gs screen!!!

Bluetooth Low Energy

LG Optimus 4X HD and Android 4.3 should support a BLE aka Bluetooth Smart. However I was unable to pair my bluetooth 4 heart rate monitor and use it.
So I looked into it and found that there was not "android.hardware.bluetooth_le.xml" file which I believe is necessary for BLE connections. I also found it in one of the LG Optimus G's custom roms. I put the file to system\etc\permissions file, extracted and installed the zip. Still I was unable to pair the device. I have tried latest CM, PA and Vanir roms.
Have you been able to get BLE working with your devices? Is there something developers might be able to do?

No I haven't because to my knowledge Android 4.3 is needed because of its Bluetooth API.
E: I finally got it working. All that was needed was the bluetooth_le.xml and BLE Heart Rate Monitor -app from Google Play. It' still doesn't pair in in the Anroid's settings though. I am not sure yet if it works with other apps.
I would recommend developers to add bluetooth_le.xml to their roms
.
I am also having this problem. I have only tried cyanogenmod 11 though but I cannot get my ble heartrate monitor working.
Is there an optimus 4x rom that supports ble, or any plan on implementing in cyanogenmod or other roms?
All roms based on P880-dev sources have BLE support.
Is the CM11 based on P880-dev? It would seem it isn't because it wasn't possible to use the BLE with it. Instead I had to manually place the .xml file. It is quite impractical to do this every time instead of using OTA updates just because of a lack of one small file.
I have been using lately Vanir and unofficial CM11 and as many other roms they do support the BLE so I don't understand why the official CM11 couldn't as well.
Thundermand:
were you able to pair your bluetooth device in any of the roms?
I am able to use my heartrate monitor but only in some downloaded apps (BLE Heart Rate Monitor, IpSensorMan). When I am trying to pair it in the bluetooth setting it does nothing.
I have a noname monitor I hope that it is not the problem.

No, the pairing in Android settings doesn't work (it didn't work on 4.3 too). I might have the same cheap noname HRM from eBay as you do. But all the programs which support Bluetooth Smart have built-in pairing so I suppose that the problem is more Android than HRM related.
You should try Polar Beat and Ride with GPS too. They are fine apps but there are some problems with RWGPS and my HRM.

Yes we probably have the same monitor.
Pairing would be important for me as I have been using endomondo pro for some time, and it has no built in pairing. But I'll try the ones you suggested, thanks.

I got it working, too, using android.hardware.bluetooth_le.xml and it worked fine for a while but after an update of Cyanogenmod (cm-11-20140503-NIGHTLY) it stopped working. I looked and the file was gone. But even after putting it back in /etc/permissions/, it doesn't work anymore.

I use the unofficial cyanogenmod. I thought it was p880-dev based, at least partly (I remember there was a time when ble worked on unofficial when it was not working on official). Was it necessary to disable it also on unofficial? Did it cause that big of problem. Unfortunately this is a feature that I can not do without.

@Demetris included the disabling commit, because it got merged into official device tree.
I"ll revert it. Think is why Ricardo disable it in first place. I thought there was a bug or something

Hmm, I saw this: Add support for BLE and installed cm-11-20140605-NIGHTLY but BLE still doesn't work. Has the change not yet been merged? I'm relatively new to git and github, so I'm not sure if I understand how and when a change should show up in the NIGHTLY builds.

Bluetooth GPS & Internet at the same time.

Ok Gear owners. Who of you that DOES NOT have native Bluetooth Internet Tethering, have you been able to get both a GPS receiver and Internet receiver to work at the same time?
I have a Note 3 (T-Mobile) and I can only connect Internet or Bluetooth. not both at the same time.
I have tried several Bluetooth GPS services on my phone, but none of them will let the gear connect at the same time I have PdaNet+ running.
I have PdaNet+ & ShareGPS running on my phone
I have BlueGPS & PdaNet Tablet on the gear
Running (Null_9)
Also what map program are you running on the gear? does it provide audio navigation?

OK, so I borrowed a Beets BLU Bluetooth Smart Heart rate monitor and it would see the device in the available devices list occasionally (1 out of 4) but would not pair, I also borrowed a Garmin Premium HRM (ANT+) and could not get that to connect at all.
I could of course be doing something completely wrong especially with the ANT+ device as I can find no instructions on home to pair the device
instructions or help with either?

You might just have be having the typical 290 issues with Bluetooth where devices can't pair. Maybe someone else will chime in with more feedback, but I don't have any BLE devices to test.
Ok So I managed to get the ANT+ device to work by installing ANT Radio Service & ANT+ Plugins from the play store following guidance from this website
http://www.thisisant.com/consumer/ant-101/ant-in-phones/
Which was really helpful, especially as the Z1 is slated as being ANT+ native supporting but still needs additional software drivers installed, but there is nothing on Sony's documentation to drive you to this conclusion.
As for the Bluetooth 4.0/Bluetooth Smart device still no joy - Anybody any further ideas or is it just a case of waiting for a bug fix?
Install BLE Heart Rate Monitor from store. In the settings pair with your HRM. Don't try and pair through phone bluetooth settings. Bluetooth smart isn't designed to be paired like this apparently.

Thanks for the info - partially works, connects but drops the connection routinely even after refreshing the Bluetooth system , as suggested by the app - probably needs a bug fix
This happens sometimes unfortunately. I had no problems on my Nexus 4.
I would like to understand whether it's possible to activate bluetooth 4 and bluetooth "classic" individually. The background: I want to use a bluetooth 4 tag in combination with tasker to automate certain things once the tag is within reach. I got a Texas Instruments SensorTag which is recognized by the Z1 and can be accessed via the TI software. Tasker is currently being improved to play with BT4 devices. The issue is that there is just a single bluetooth switch within Android, but of course I want to avoid the power hungry classic bluetooth and use bluetooth instead.
Any ideas if there is a solution? Maybe via an Xposed module?
Cheers,
Torsten

It is already BT 4.0 as long as device you use has it too, no further activation needed. If you try to use it with device that has older version like BT 2.1 functionality of BT 4.0 will be downscaled to work with older version.

Many thanks! This sounds good! To be fully sure: once a BT2.1 device disconnects, BT falls "back" to 4.0? The longer I think about it I wonder whether it really makes a difference if a phone waiting for a connection is using BT2.1 or BT4.0. Do the 4.0 improvements have an effect on the power consumption before the connection is established?

It is more like imposed limits by older version go away. Power consumption in BT 4.0 is more like: little power used to connect, pair and then it uses more power when large amount of information needs to be transferred (like opening higher bandwidth based on Wi-Fi that uses more power for shorter period of time). While discovering device awaits connection it consumes very little of battery on either 2.1 or 4.0. from what I can see versions of BT evolve in added functionality that is based mainly on transfer rate as well as better power management.

[help] Connecting Polar H7 via Bluetooth

Hi there,
Has anyone already succeeded in connecting the "Polar H7" to the HTC One M8? The H7 is intented for iPhone, but it also works for some Android devices (Samsung S5 for ex.). The official "Polar Beat" app isn't compatible with the M8 device, but the app "BLE Heart Rate Monitor" should work with the H7.
But I can't see to get the H7 paired with my device. I Already tried removing the battery and wearing the H7 while trying to connect.
Anyone who can help me ?
I'm on a custom rom ViperOneM8 1.3.0 and using Kernel 3.4.0-ElementalX-0.6.
Thanks in advance
Mike
I'm in the same boat. I click to pair it and then it goes right to Last paired on:......
For a BLE HR sensor to work on Android, the app must specifically support it; not many of them do yet. If your app is compatible, you do the pairing from within the app; not from the main bluetooth settings.
(I don't have a Polar H7 but I do have a Zephyr HxM which is also BLE. I'm using it with ithlete).
