Smart dock or adapter for the LG G2 - G2 Accessories

Not sure if this came up in another thread, but as I was contemplating a new phone, one of my main draws to the Samsung Galaxy S4 (or Note 3) was the existence of their smart dock accessory which essential allows you to hook up a hard drive, keyboard, mouse, and display to your phone for a complete desktop experience. Of course, I ended up with the LG G2 because it won me over on many other fronts. Now, having done some research, it doesn't appear that anything like this smart hub exists out there that would support such simultaneous connectivity to the G2. I realize our phone supports Slimport, and from the Analogix website, the slimport standard does indeed support pass through of USB slave or OTG connections, so it is entirely possible. Now, I realize the Nexus 4 kicked off the Slimport standard and from what I've read, it did not natively support OTG so I imagine such a smart dock was never conceived for that phone. If anyone has any more info beyond what I've found, do share! Seeing that LG is so eager to follow the Samsung blueprint, I contacted them with an inquiry to support a smart dock/connector type accessory. I also plan to contact Analogix. I would urge anyone here interested in such a dock to at least hit up LG with a request. If they intend to reach the sales numbers they announced, and for this phone to be a flagship like the S4, seems like this would be a no-brainer accessory.

I bought it, works perfectly when you plug in power cable (plays without it for a few secs but then turns off then back on)

Want simultaneous hdmi and USB OTG.

Hello kyler13,
I am also looking for a smartdock for the g2, so I decided to bring this thread up from the abyss.
Did you find anything useful yet?
I found one at amazon, but I'm not too sure if it will work on the g2
i am not allowed to post links so just google this:
MHL Adapter 5in1 Set HDMI Micro USB SD
and grab the first link that goes to amazon
It is truly annoying that OEMs don't include basic features like the possibility to use usb otg and hdmi simultaneously in their phones. Not to mention removable batteries and micro sd card slots.

I'm guessing this would not work since it's MHL and not Slimport. From what I've seen not all MHL devices are compatible with Slimport. It would be great if this one is though, but it's hard to say from the specs.

how many ampere does it produce? is it bigger than the fast charge charger of G2?

Has anyone tried this accessory with the GN2? Looks pretty useful, just want to make sure it works without rooting.

I have one and it works great. I've only used it for transferring in photos from my digicam and some files from a few thumbdrives, but it's worked perfectly thus far.

I have one. No need to root as stock OTG support is fine, but will not read NTFS.
There are a couple issues I have with it used with Note2:
- it will not act as a dock... it will not charge your phone while it powers memory or USB devices.
- it cannot be used with a case, unless you also buy an extension cable... M/F micro USB
- mine feels a little weak, like it might break off in the micro USB port & is intermittent if moved.
It's easier & cheaper to use a OTG cable unless you need to power USB devices... then you could add a hub. If you use a smart dock, you get charging, 3x USB, audio, HDMI.
For the cost, it would have been nice to have it charge as stated for S2.

Bought it for use with my Galaxy Note and now use it for my Galaxy Note 2.
Works great (yeah, not with a case on unless you have an extension cable), have used it with SD cards, Keyboard, mouse (yup, puts a mouse pointer on your screen!), external hard drive (but you have to plug in power (usb or wall charger) for that), I have even plugged in my Creative USB headphones and they work great! Awesome device.
If I was to make it, I would put a little sturdier plug on it (see other post for "flimsy feel") and make it so it had a VERY short plug (like a 1/4 inch longer) so it could be used without popping the bottom out of my TPU case).
If someone has a link to a SHORT m-f micro usb extender, SHARE please !!

Did anyone tried the version with the hdmi?If it works,it could be a good alternative to official smart dock (100$)
It seems that it doesn't charge the note, as per the reviews, when the usb host is used.
I want something that charges it, to use it in the car, sending video to my headrest screens FROM a USB thumb drive. So I'd need USB+HDMI out, plus charging. That would be great to have. But only playing videos from USB drive WHILE CHARGING it would be enough for me. Although there are dongles for the Note 2 that would allow HDMI+Charging, there is nothing AT ALL in the market that would allow USB HOST+Charging capabities. Not an Android phone, not a tablet (other than Toshiba/Acer with USB ports on the side).

I think MHL will not work because the 11 pin vs 5 pin connector we have like the Galaxy S3
Found this comment on amazon:
This thing is magic! All of these different ports in one simple accessory is brilliant! They don't claim that MHL on this unit works with the Samsung Galaxy S3 and sure enough MHL does not. Everything else does though. Having all of these ports on one small accessory makes the most of any compatible smart phone.

But if you also use a Micro USB 5 Pin To 11 Pin (4$ from ebay) I guess it would work

Chances that it would work on the Note 2 are slim I fear.
Anyway I will probably get the older version with the card reader and usb port,it is more portable!

SlimPort - a new kind of magic? I Doubt it.

Hey all,
seeing all the threads about OTG and the difference to MHL, I thought I'd try to clear things up a bit:
Is this just another name for MHL?
No, it's not. MHL and SlimPort do the same, but in different ways. It's not the same and accessories are not compatible. You will need a new adapter, e.g.
Aren't we being 'appled' here?
Just a little, really. SlimPort does have several advantages, such as support for more than just HDMI and the freedom not to connect a power source, if you don't want to. Also it helps make the device as cheap as it is, because while MHL requires fees, SlimPort does not.
Does this device support USB OTG?
No, not yet. It should be possible though. Analogix (the makers of SlimPort) state their product will pass USB OTG signals to a host controller. Is there a host controller? Yes, there is! The N4's CPU includes one Figures it's a matter of support in the kernel, someone will likely get to this in the near future.
Sounds pretty impressive, huh? I'm afraid it isn't. While most manufacturers switched to a 11-pin design, SlimPort still uses 5-pin according to the whitepaper. Now, what does that mean? There's 3 data lines less, usual USB connections are not even possible, says the whitepaper. So it will most likely not be possible to use video output and OTG at the same time.
Most people will not care about this, but it will be a big deal for those - including me - who want to use it as a 'PC replacement'.
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I did some thorough research and believe I should be right with my statements here.
Regards,
dobbi10k
I'm disappointed with this switch to SlimPort.
1. I just want to get the display of my phone to the TV. So to me MHL and SlimPort do the same thing and it doesn't matter if they do it differently.
2. I feel "Apple'd" big time. Only one company makes these SlimPort adapters that I could find and they charge $30 for it. The MHL adapter I already own can't be used. Argh.
And I kept hearing about how I wouldn't need a power cable and that was suppose to be an advantage to SlimPort. But reading on their website, it sounds like the TV or monitor must support SlimPort too in order for the power over HDMI to work. Standard HDMI ports from the TV to the adapter will still need a separate power source.
I doubt SlimPort will catch on and I know I won't be spending $30 for an adapter that nothing else will probably ever use.
God, I need a freaking Miracast box that will work with my Nexus 4 in the worst way.
I think you pay the fees with the cable rather than possibly paying fees with the phone for a feature you may not want. I think this is why the cable costs more.
I could be wrong though and its just a company profitting because they are currently the only supplier.

I thought the micro usb sockets only had 5 pins anyway, so where the hell doe the 6 pins come from?
Edit: Galaxy S III has a 11pin port apparently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link

No, that was true for MHL, either the screen had to have a power output on the HDMI cable or you had to connect an external power source. SlimPort however makes this unneccessary, you CAN connect an external power source to charge your phone, but you don't have to.
If I already bought an MHL adapter, I would probably feel apple'd too, got you point, though

The standard is maintained by VESA and it's completely free. However, the HDMI standard still requires fees, which you pay with the cable. A display port adapter could be made way cheaper. But the latter is true, too. All these adapters could be made cheaper.

[Q] problem with mhl-hdmi adaptor

Good afternoon, everybody. I can not find the problem, on the Russian Forums Help is not found. (I am from Moscow). such a problem-acquired mhl-hdmi adapter. connecting entirely in accordance with the instructions is nothing happens. no pop-up window on the connected hdmi no display on the screen. the problem is clearly not in the adapter. I believe that I have something extra frozen / deleted. please if someone knows tell me what process / system file is responsible for displaying the image on the hdmi.thank you all in advance. and please do not delete the question if he is in the wrong section. move to the desired section please.
Make sure you are using 11pin (not 5 pin) adapter. Can you check adapter with another Note 2 to make sure that adapter is ok?

you can also test the adapter with a Galaxy S3, and probably S4. I don't believe the S4 changed anything in the HML or USB port, so it's very likely the same as GN2 and S3.
Also, if you are using a HML adapter, make sure it has enough power. Not all adapters pulled enough power from the phone, so you will need an external power source. Most just use the USB cable and charger that come with the phone.

unfortunately I have not the opportunity to try something different to what note2 or s3. if I had the chance I would not have asked for help. I just ask somebody to check on his device and see what process start when adapter connect to the phone and tv. sorry for any mistakes
the idea was to confirm that your GN2 wasn't working correct, and it wasn't the adapter. If the adpater worked, then it's the phone. If not, the it may be the adapter.
Depending on your adapter, it's possible there may not be enough power, thus, it's possible the HML isn't registering. I'm assuming you're not using some one directional HDMI cable.
I use an adapter as well. I needed a 5pin to 11pin adapter. I have to use the phone charger to power the adapter. The above video shows the setup and it working.
Maybe you can let someone at the store where you got the phone to test another phone with the adapter or an adapter with your phone. Hopefully they have TV with HDMI to test with. Maybe try an electronics store.

By the way your adapter is not like mine. Apparently, in different regions of different designs.

It's don't work It is a pity. Don't know what's next search. What's the problem
the adapter I have is a generic one I got from Monoprice; they're a company that sells cheaper electronic, which is usually made in China. Thus, it is not the official sumsung one.
it looks like you're still in the situation where you don't know if it is your phone or the MHL adapter where the problem lies. I would consider going to an electronics store that sells TVs, phones, video games, and so forth; whatever is the similar to Best Buy in the USA. I don't know the stores that would be in Moscow. Bring your phone and adapter and see if they will let you hook up to one of their TVs. Also, see if they will let you test out another adapter, maybe one that they sell. And maybe they can let you test Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 or Note 2 with your adapter.
I think it may be the easiest way to figure it out based on your don't know anyone locally with any of the Samsung phones list above. There's just too many variables right now to effectively to say one way or the other.
thank you very much for the advice. yesterday went to the official store samsung. asked to check but no one helped me. so I will look for original cable and test all over again. today tried my cable on another galaxy note 2. no reaction. even tried to connect another cable hdmi, the more expensive and high quality. It seems the problem is still in the adapter.

not aware of the USB debugging should be enabled or not? and then perhaps because of this problem?
that should not effect the HDMI/HML. Mine is always enableed, but only triggers when connected to a PC. Most likely, the HML uses more pins than the USB for a PC, which is why it doesn't trigger.

Smart Dock Alternative???

smart dock knockoff.....may be worth a shot because the samsung one is too dang expensive....this one also looks like it will accept cases unlike the stock one....i may have to give it a shot after payday http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMART-MULTI...ories_MobilePhoneChargers&hash=item5657f3c0a2
Since in US it will still going to cost more than $50, I will wait for some reviews before getting one. Good find for sure
the official dock does accept some cases.
I've had it working with the official flip cover, and with the official protective cover +.
I had seen this exact dock from a different seller on ebay a couple of days ago. I was about to buy it, but then I noticed that it said in the fine print that the mhl and otg connections can't be used at the same time. I'll see if I can find the link again. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that the oem dock can do both simultaneously?

Very good in hdmi e 80 inch projector ... :good:
I got one from Amazon for 2t bucks. Compared it to a real one . It's got all most the same circuitry.
The chips that process the otg and charge curent signal are a lot different. But mine works it will charge while I runmy powered usb hub with my external harddrive. In the one I have you only get one otg option at a time. Like you can do one sd card or one usb thing or the hdmi out but not all at the same time so your going to need a usb hub thats got it's own power supply.
And like all Chinese knock offs you never know witch of there military owned slave labour operated plants actually built it . so there's a good chance you wind up with a better one.or one that isn't as good. Or maybe even one that doesn't work at all. They're all in the same case so its hit or miss.
My cheap knock off doc failed as off last night its no longer recognized as a doc. It shows up only the hdmi and charger.you can always charge and use hdmi out. But otg mod reverse the usb port so you can't charge.
Someone know a gadget that allows both usages? HDMI + USB at same time?

I'm thinking That to get otg charging theres got to be a switch in the software someplace that lets you turn offotg mod and turn in back on really fast. Like pules on off on off on off constantly in the kernel. But I'm also thinking that there might not be a switch like that in our phones.
I'm thinking that the chips in a smart doc probably do that. So that leaves us not much choice. We either got to buy a doc. Find that switch or
Get a wireless charger.
I found a port of the famous faux kernel. I tried it with the 5 dollar add on app. It had no effect on otg charging a note 2.
I'm thinking the best cheap solution is one of the inductive charger sets. Or possibly putting a 555 timing circuit into a usd cable.
But a $35 1 amp wireless universal charge plat and coil would probably be the easiest way to go.

MHL 3.0 Adapter...

I have been scouring the web & even overseas manufacturers looking for anyone that can provide a MHL 3.0 Adapter. Has anyone seen one on the market yet? Some of the overseas sites are poorly worded, MHL 3.0 USB, but upon further investigation, all have been MHL 2.0 with support for USB 3.0.
If anyone has a source for these, in either single unit or batch lots for resale, please let me know.

NO> Any that aupprts the 5-pin should work fine. It is just that 2.0 & 3.0 don't need external power, if supported by the device, & 3.0 has greater speed & bandwidth capabilities. 4K video & 7.1 surround sound (L-PCM) support.

Except that one states in big red letter that external power is REQUIRED. WHich would make it MHL 1.0. It also states 1080p, again MHL 3.0 supports 4k video. Most of the MHL 2.0 devices also support at least USB 3.0, that one supports USB 2.0, which again supports it being an MHL 1.0 device.
That's the thing, I have found a few that claim to be MHL 3, but none of them seem to pan out to actually be MHL 3.0. Most of the time when you contact to call them on it, or inquire, you get zero response. Ebay is pretty notorious for knock offs too, like the 128Gb & even 64Gb UH1 Micro SD cards.
So there is no mhl 3.0 5pin out there adapter yet.
Which 2.0 5 pin adapter should I be
buying for the HTC One m8?

Good question. I am researching that now. I find it hard to believe that a year old standard still isn't supported by accessory manufacturers, even though it is by the device manufacturers.
I'll let you know what ones I try & how it goes.

That's the same exact one I bought for my LG G2. I assumed the G2 supported MHL, but in fact it supported DisplayPort, so I had this laying around for a while, and it works just fine for the M8.

It might be a year old standard, but devices/phones supporting it are only just now being released. So, accessory manufacturers have had no reason to manufacture any adapters until now. Hopefully it won't be too long until we start seeing some now that there are some devices that can take advantage of it.

Thanks. That's the one I tried and didn't work but maybe it was defective. Did anyone bought that one also? Does it work on the HTC One m8?
For what its worth the one I bought I have to plug things in in a specific order or it won't work. I believe it is power, then HDMI, then MHL into M8. I have to do this each time, if I unplug it from the phone and just plug it back in it won't work until I unplug everything and reconnect in that order.
Nice, thanks for the tip

I finally received a different MHL adapter I bought but it still dosent work. I did what you said, first power, then HDMI and then MHL to the phone. The symbol of MHL beeing connected appears but there is onde more no image on the TV. I even tried connecting first power, then MHL and then HDMI but it´s the same thing. Can someone give me some tips, please? I am getting desperate
Did you ever get this figured out? I just used mhl for the first time on my m8. I used the same cable I did for my m7. It's a
Skiva 6.5 feet MHL (Micro USB) to male HDMI cable. I had trouble at first but here's how I got it to work flawlessly: first I plugged everything in, no particular order... Next I plugged in the micro usb part to my m8 while the tv input was still on my normal everyday input... I waited until my red charging light turned on my m8 then I switched to the correct tv input. My m8 went into mhl mode and I streamed a movie perfectly.
I tried switching the tv input first then plugging in my phone and it wouldn't work. But, when I left it on my normal input, then plugged my phone in and saw it was charging, then changed inputs.... Success!
Thanks, I will try if that works. But I've got little hopes, to be honest
