When are the displays going to improve? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Saw a brand new Z1 and unboxed it instore in phones4u, and the screen was perfect.
So i jumped the gun and ordered one for my wife from phones.co.uk.
Arrived this morning and tested the display, very good looking head on, but viewing angles are horrendous.
Im in two minds about keeping this, my wife probably not going to be bothered about the viewing angles so i may keep it, but this is a serious flaw in an otherwise amazing handset. Not yet checked camera or anything, this is supposed to be a surprise so dont want it to look used!
If I return it, how long should i wait before getting another one in hope of getting a better display?
Also, where is the fanboy that insisted retail units would be fine and crappy screens were restricted to pre production samples?

You bought the device knowing it had bad viewing angles and making a thread about when it is getting better lol
I'm sure you can answer your own question. You're one funny guy.
So you bought it for your wife. But your using it. So let your wife use it and let her decide. Again you bought it for her.

I really don't understand how people can say a screen is bad based on it's viewing angles. I mean, come on! What kind of angles are we talking about? Don't you look at the phone straight on?
I find it useful for me, I don't like people having a peek at what I'm doing... But definitely the screen itself isn't bad, viewing angles are a subjective topic!

I think it's just because this determines the quality of a display in general. Sony is putting low-quality TN matrices into their devices and that's a phenomenon in mobile world today because all the other manufacturers are using more advanced displays in their high-end devices (HTC, Nokia, LG, Apple - IPS, Samsung, Nokia - OLED). It's not good when you tilt the phone 30 degs. and see strong color degradation. It's not that you look at the screen at an angle all the time but even if you look 5% of the time you want the picture to be good. It's hard to spend money on this device knowing it lacks in this important aspect. This is more strange because the older Z Ultra has better display (IPS probably?).
I also understand this may not be a problem for some and I generally find the Z1 very nice device but waiting impatiently for Sony to improve the display tech.

Well if the phone is on a table or you're using the phone while lying on bad (just two examples), naturally the phone won't be dead-on your face.

One thing people dont understand is that OLED is not water proof, deteriorates very fast... and sun legibility is next to 0...
FYI Sony is not using TN display they are using VA...

I still don't understand people's complain about this viewing angle thing. I have used Samsung, HTC phones and Sony Z1. I have no complaint about it sdisplay. Viewing angle is good, may not be the best but it is quite good. This is waterproof phone, which means they have to use different display that is not used by non-waterproof phone. Some trade-offs have to be made in order to make electronic device waterproof. You can either have the best waterproof phone or best display phone, not both.

This is a load of rubbish, it does not have a poor screen because it is water proof - there are z1's out there with an amazing screen. Unfortunately its a bit of a lottery which type you end up with. The one i saw in the shop was perfect, mine, not so much.

To be honest this thread is total rubbish.
Viewing angles, how many people want to look at the phone in any other way than being head on is beyond a joke! But I want to share a movie with me mate or gf, really? It's your bloody phone, it was designed to be looked at head on, not tilted and not really for sharing, we have things called TV's for sharing movies etc.

Like the display type governs whether or not the phone is waterproof.
Waterproofing is something sony has added to their phone, regardless of display type. And yes, the screens in Sony handsets are poor compared to the competition, but not everyone is bothered by this.
I for one can't stand when black is never black but grey, turning more towards light grey if you just tilt it a few degrees.

I don't see so much this problem, I'm not using my phone as a TV so view angles are important and the screen is super usable, as said before what I like more than anything else is its LUMINOSITY, is the ONLY phone that can beat the iPhone (actually the best one) under the sun. I prefer less view angles and be able to use my phone outside. That without consider that the screen has really nice colors (and realistic)

Why all this hate about the screen?

Im considering getting an HD7. I had a chance to play with a quantum an fell in love with WP7. I was one who was on the Evo bandwagon, and bought a launch phone (I ended up returning it and switching to tmobile). When that phone launched, every blog, review, and post was raving about how AMAZING the screen was. Now, the same screen is in the HD7 and it seems like everyone thinks its garbage. Whats the deal? The evo's been out what, 6 months? Did everyone's eyes just just get used to the ridiculously over saturated colors of the galaxy s super amoled or what?
I've never used the EVO; I love my HD7 but the screen sucks. Point blank. The screen on the HD7 looks like the screen I had on my greyscale palm-pilot 10 years ago. It's not just the fact that its ridiculously reflective; it's very poor at producing colors and the viewing angles are really limited.
I think the best way to describe it would be like those old laptop screen that had a back light lamp.
Again I'm coming from the HD2 and a long line of HTC phones. I really liked the screen on the HD2. You know a screen is good when you rarely ever have to think about it. with the HD7 . . . . . you always do.
Im not sure I understand, dont the HD2 and HD7 share the same screen?

No! Not in the slightest.
I have an HTC HD 7 and am quiet Happy with the screen quality, although Ihavent used any of your guys phones..
THe mere fact that the screen size is 4:3 makes me love it so much i dont even feel like using my computer any more
I have had an HD2, VIBRANT AND HD7... I like the HD7's screen the best... to each his own.

Very true buddy
I went from the HD2 to HD7. I think the screens are close in terms of quality. I have noticed that if I leave the brightness on the HD7 set to auto it's too dim for me. I prefer a clear, bright screen but I am sure I will pay in battery life (which already seems better in the HD7).

You should return yours. There's something wrong with it. The HD7 screen is among the best there is, period. I have an HD7 and an HD2 and find the image quality to be purely superb and the definition much better than any OLED.
Here is how you discern the truth about some people, the ones who are being purely trollish will not want you to see for yourselves. I highly recommend to anyone who gives the slightest consideration to what this poster is saying go see for themselves. T-Mobile has the Galaxy S, which has an AMOLED, and the HD7, which has the superb LCD. Compare both phones side by side and make sure to look at text definition. You won't find a better looking normal LCD in the market than what the HD7 has.

You are a moron for calling me a troll. I can't find a better way to articulate. You might just be the troll for pissing me off. As you can see from my post I clearly stated it as my observation and I used my past experiences for comparison.
That doesn't make me right or wrong. It's clearly my perception based on the OP's question. You obviously have yours.
Then again you could just be a 10 year old in your mom's basement and I fell for your comment. in that case you got me kid.

You are obviously a bitter person that just needs to relax. Calling people morons and trolls and 10 year boys just makes yourself seem offensive and childish. It is what is so don't accuse someone for being a troll just because he directed an opinion at you.
I'm sorry no one here agrees with your argument but that doesnt mean you should build up so much pent up anger to lash out at the first person that makes a comment against you.
Though i think there is something that the rest of us can agree on: you, sir, are a complete douche.
I like the screen on the Hd7, are the viewing angles bad? Well yes...depending on what phone you are coming from. In my case I'm coming from the Nexus One. In my own opinion I think the Hd7 screen is a lot more sharper than the screen on the Nexus One. Remember you are not going to carry around two phones in your pocket to compare screens all day long. Just my 2 Cents.

Hey! have you run any comparisons to see if there was a radical difference in battery life. From what I gather with a dark background theme the difference in battery is minimal but with the light which I use there would be a significant difference.
If you do not play games or watch your email 10,000 times a day there is not going to be a significant increase in battery use, but if you do you may shorten to just the 8 hours of business hours.
Anyway the screen is absolutely great, that was the reason I wanted the HD7 compared to these over saturated color phones which look great when you see a demo but you get quickly bored by the non-natural feel of the colors. the HD7 is very natural, has a good viewing angle (I don't think anyone plans on looking it at more than like 20-30 degrees on the side and still is very readable.
the size, the quality, the good sensitive touch (sometime maybe a little too sensitive) that's the best screen around.
It is a bit bland to me however
i have been using a Samsung Captivate for so long
that anything non Super Amoled
is just...dim
I still have the HD2 and had the HD7 and did 2 comparisons. First I loaded Transformers from the HD2 on to the HD7 and put them side by side and compared the images. No discernable difference. Second comparison was with a Samsung Focus screen at an at&t kiosk. There's no other way to say it, the HD7 screen looked like complete rubbish, dull screen, dim colours. On its own the HD7 might seem impressive, but put it up against the Focus or any other modern screen (like on the iphone) and the absolute crappiness of the screen is abundantly clear. There's just no contest when it comes to the screen quality, and when you consider that HTC's WP7 devices are the least well regarded for various reasons (with the HD7 going so far as to have the same camera bug as the HD2 did) I dont think there's any doubt that HTC didnt put much effort into their WP7 lineup and its no surprise the screen is not well regarded. As good as WP7 is, the HD7 is not a comparably good device.
After doing that screen comparison with the focus I returned mine today and ordered a Dell Venue Pro for the same price.
I actually think that the screen quality is pretty good when compared to the majority of LCD based phones. I don't have a lot of experience with oled but look forward to comparing the on order venue pro against my HD7. I have played extensively with my friends galaxy s phone but do not own one.
I do notice some motion blur while scrolling quickly with certain color schemes though. I also recommend setting the screen brightness to medium. I have not experienced a noticeable amount of battery difference with moderate use but there is a noticeable improvement in quality. The auto brightness of this phone is one of the dimmest I have ever seen. Overall I would give it around a 7.5 with the Pioneer Elite 111 as my reference in the background.
You just said it yourself...You used
"Super Amoled" on the Focus and retina display on iphone 4
I have both a mytouch 4g(that i am returning) and
a HD7 and i notice nothing majorly different
As well as a Droid X that a colleague has....Not a big difference

[Q] Screen A Disappointment?

Engadget's review is out and one of the negative things they had to say about the Optimus 4X was the screen. They say that the screen isn't bonded to the front glass, resulting to not having that "floating icons" feel and more importantly, poor viewing angles.
Where did you see "poor viewing angles"? I am watching the review right now and it says respectable viewing angles. Besides the screen is very bright.. At least in the GSMArena test..
18:20 of their video review. He didn't literally say "poor viewing angles", but I think that's what he means when he said "it just goes away". That's doesn't sound too "respectable".
I haven't noticed poor viewing angles at all. I can still see the screen at obscure angles.
Its no more or less visible at angles than my HTC Sensation was. IMHO, the screen is amazing on this device. Pin Sharp, natural colour reproduction, I have a wallpaper from Zedge of a forest with "God rays" shining through, looks simply amazing on this phone to me.

Don't the colors get washed out more and more as you look at the screen at increasing angles?
Not really no, a tiny bit maybe but not worse than my sensation. Id call it more of a tint than a wash out, and surely a phone is a single user device, why do viewing angles matter that much?

I think it does, to be honest, I was actually surprised how well I could see the screen from steep angles, considering what some have said.
The problem is, the best way to know if you will be happy is to see one in the flesh, but thats not so easy when it isnt available worldwide yet.

honestly why would anyone look at their phone from a 170 degree angle or even just 90? worthless requirement, just to say mine is better than yours. when all viewing angles from left/right/top/bottom works and equally the same within the 0-20/30 degree viewing, its as good as it should.
As long as its sharp and true colours represented and details are there representing all colours as they should, i am happy.
I own the 4X and let me tell you the viewing angles are superb under normal light conditions. There is some visible glare under strong direct sunlight and viewing angles do become a bit worse but you won't have any trouble with it. It's quite good under direct sunlight.
For one I'm glad I choose 4x over S3 ore One X.
for me the 4x have the best display, very high ppi, i like the galaxy s3,but dont like the super amoled just because its a pentile display and the pixel are not tru hd

Not convinced by this. I'm thinking of updating from an HTC Desire, which has an AMOLED, and it's beautiful. I have no problems with burn in. Maybe that happens if you leave the screen on for a couple of weeks on the same image, but that's hardly likely.
One of my big concerns is the 4x screen won't look as good in comparison. What's the brightness like anyone?

I did exatly what you're thinking about!!
I've had the HTC Desire for a little over 2 years, and bought the 4x a couple of weeks ago.
Yes the Desire has a good screen, but the one on the 4x i way better!!
I always used the autobrightnes on the Desire, but it was often very hard to see the screen in the sunshine.
On the 4x the autobrightness works a little different. You set a base point, and the autobrightness changes relative to that.
That way it doesn't turn the brightness all the way up or all the way down.
I've set it to a base point of 20% brightness, at it gives me a screen that are easier to read outside then the desire ever did.
So if the screen is you only worry, go right ahead and buy the 4x. It's a big improvement over your HTC Desire.
The only thing I miss from the Desire is the notification LED (and ofcouse ROOT, but I'm sure that will come soon!!! )

i had a SAMSUNG GALAXY S with S-AMOLED before the O4X.
Amoled screens have perfect blacks , but those of the SGS and the Desire have also wrong "funky" colors
The le LG screen does not have perfect blacks, but is brighter , sharper (because of the pentile matrix, there is no amoled that sharp on the market) and has realistic colors.
talking about angle . what i can say is that i can watch the film, or read any message of someone sitting next to me ...
so for me the angle is not an issue: at an extreme position, it becomes dark, but the angle is so wide that, even if it could be clearer, it would also be unreadable with any type of screen technology.

Cheers for the detailed reply. Nice to know it's better in sunlight, because I always found the Desire was awful.
I tend not to use auto-brightness though in fear of it draining the battery to much. I just had my Desire at 15% and that worked fine in most situations, except bright outdoors
Once your battery is low and you put your phone on charge, what sort of screen-on time do you normally have? I found typically I'd have 2 hours of screen-time from my Desire by the end of a day, 15 hours or so off the charger, and that would be about 20% battery remaining. What's it like for the 4x?
Unfortunately the LED is probably the biggest killer for me then. I love having the light on the Desire, especially since I've got it rooted and Handcent can use blue and pink and stuff. Looks awesome I know one isn't supposed to play the waiting game, but I'd hate it if I bought the 4x and then in 2 months time, a phone with similar specs and an LED came out :S
Such difficult decisions...

The Nexus 4 has one of the WORST screens ever! even with calibrated roms!

Well ive owned many high end Android devices like the Gnex, GS3, HOX, Note 2, Optimus G and just last week I had the oportunity to get the Nexus 4 for a trully great price so I went for it. After reading all about it on the web, I was very anxious to get my hands on it and when I finally did... WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT! let me elaborate...
The device build quality and design is great, I really like the form factor, materials used, overall design. The clean Android OS is superb, and something that other manufacturers should copy instead of giving us all sort of useless bloatware...
Now to the screen.... that GOD-AWFUL-SCREEN.! I cant beleive that a high end device like this has such a poor screen! out of the box the colors are so washed out and dull, the viewing angles are also terrible. I went to google and did a little research and finally installed some roms with calibrated screen settings and the colors definetely improved, but the viewing angles did not, even if you tilt the screen a little bit to the left or to the right the blacks become white (like my cheapo $25- candybar motorola phone). I find this totally unaceptable and going to sell this ASAP. Its really a pitty, because I was so looking forward to getting this phone. But in my case the screen is the most important part of the phone and this screen is just so sub-par. What I dont get is that this is supossed to be the same screen as the Optimus G, but comon, theyre not even close!!
The viewing angles really aren't the best but the screen itself when you look straight at it is pretty good in my opinion.
But thanks for your 2 cents!
You should sell it to me for a good price

Yes, with the custom rom that I installed the colors improved a lot, but the viewing angles remained terrible! what I really dont get is that this is supossed to be the same screen as the optimus G right? the OG had GREAT viewing angles! how can this be??
On principle I too think the viewing angles are unacceptable....I was shocked when I saw them really. Reviews seemed to gloss over them and some had the nerve to say they were good. lulz No.
With all that being said when I wasn't testing the viewing angles and just used the phone as I normally world, the screen looked good, if not a little washed out.
I only had it for a day then sold it.
So yeah, they suck when you look for them but straight on as I imagine most use thier phone, its all good.
I have a Note 2 but still tempted to have stock goodness along side. How much are you selling yours for out of curiosity?

Well ... All i can say is.
Price will not lie ...
Got 2 release ones here. Lovely screens, best ive ever had with great viewing angles.
Guess LG changed production after losing too much money.
Definitely worse than my mytouch 3g.
In all seriousness, its a $300 phone, so you get what u pay for. viewing angle is not a problem with me if I look at it from straight ahead, and there's utilities to change the color and gamma.

I cant beleive that a high end device like this has such a poor screen! out of the box the colors are so washed out and dull, the viewing angles are also terrible. i get my nexus tomorrow at the end of the day, hopefully i dont have that =(
I don't get the viewing angles paranoia to be honest.
I think myself a fairly normal user of a phone, in that I hold it more or less straight on rather than trying to look at it from 60°. What do you gain from crazy viewing angles exactly?

Really? Sometimes i let it spin on my finger tips and i watch for any inconsistency in the color. Then i throw it high up in the air and check viewing angles, i spit that thing on the floor. On the bed, on the couch, on my monitor. Heck sometimes i even tie it down from the ceiling just to push it around and see if the colors change.
It's just, it's that important!!

For me the screen represents the quality of the whole phone since its the biggest part of the phone. So if the screen is s*hit, the whole phone is s*hit!
You say the screen/phone is s#it because it looks different at a 60-75 degree angle? Orly? So, is that how you judge people too? I heard the iPhone has perfect viewing angles at °180 degrees. You should probably go check that one out

Sometimes a step down in quality shows the importance of quality, say using a phone with bad viewing angles after using one with perfect screen shows how much difference does it make. Cause in real life there are so many situations you don't hold it perfectly, in a crowded are like transportation, under the sunlight where you must change angles, when it mounted on a car holder, when it's on your desk, when framing a picture of a subject you whole body can't get in front of, when it's in someone else's hands etc. I think off angles are responsible for more than 33% of usage, and that's a lot of pain for Xperia Z users.
Not happy with mine either.... wonder WHY do they want to use IPS display?

well said bro.
The screen is gorgeous on the N5. So many people are just looking from something to complain about. It is a 5" screen and for how most of us will be viewing it, it is looks freakin great.
Unless you are throwing a naked picture of a chick on your phone and laying it flat down next to you in bed and want to view her from a side angle why else would you care how it looks at an angle like that?
Top of the line LED TV's that are thousands of dollars have the same off viewing angle issues and people get over it so I don't see what the issue is with the N5 screen for $400.
Damn, I just turned my phone face down and I couldn't even see the screen! That's it, it's going back.

It is the most known thing about LED technology and even the new OLED technology has this issue. It is not as noticeable in stores but when you get it home it is pretty extreme. Viewing angles are one of the major talked about things when deciding to purchase a plasma or LED TV. Plasma's offer wide viewing angles while LED do not. This is a technology fact and not just my opinion by the way.
Nice viewing angle , I mean seriously you people need to stop with that viewing angle sh**, that's not helping google...349 for unlocked top of the line hardware and yall still complaining..sheezus

A Technology fact? Well.. my friends htc one for example doesnt suffer from this issue and its an IPS too! Im afraid we just get what we paid for. And since the Display is probably the most expensive part of a phone: Cheap price, cheap display...

Viewing angles are much more relevant for televisions.
I did not even notice that my HTC One has good viewing angles until literally yesterday (when reading about the N5). It's just not a practical issue on a mobile device.
Oh Man I Have Nexus 4 And Its Screen Also Has Same Issue I Was Going To Get Nexus 5 But Not Now Sorry Google ....

Yup, totally agree but wanted to stress the fact that price doesn't necassarily mean anything. I have a Samsung $2,700 USD TV that washes out from the side.
I am also wondering if they used different panels in the N5 because my screen looks great and for any way I can think of viewing it, it does not wash out.

You really should apologize to yourself and not Google because the N5 screen is in another class then the N4.

Based on nexus 5 kernel sources there are 2different types of displays, one from LG and the other from JapanDisplay similar to Xperia Z and Z1

[Q] Would you guys recommend buying the LG G Flex?

Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

Thanks!
I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years
