[Q] ROM Development? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Love my Z1 so far but..
Wondering about 3 things at the moment,
1. Will Sony ever fix the camera issue for the bootloader?
2. If so, Will there be a great amount of ROM development like for example the Galaxy series.
3. Are we gonna see some nice updates from Sony in the near future? ( Camera fix, 4.3/4.4?)

Sony will definitely sort the camera issue out with regards to the bootloader.
We have two fantastic devs already, krabappel2548 & DooMLoRD, more will come if they think the Z1 is worth developing for.
Updates will come when and where Sony sees fit to release them but we all hope for 4.4

I only miss lack of working recovery for 534!
I have unlocked bootloader of my old Z and after some time it brick's (nothing to do with unlocking) fortunately they exchanged it under warranty, but now i prefer not to unlock bootloader and only root (which is must!). Original ROM is very good

I'm really not missing having custom rom's because after rooting I'm using Xposed - have about 25 modules installed and my phone may as well have a custom rom on it because all the features I usually look for are there! With "Auto Hide Soft Keys" installed I've got the full screen size back and I'm really very very happy overall.
Normally I'd have installed a 'slim' or 'AOSP' type rom just for speed reasons, but the damn Snapdragon 800 is so fast it really doesn't matter that Sony preloaded a little bit of bloatware - and its not as pervasive & space consuming as Samsungs bloat.
The only features I'm missing are the kernel level features (Touch-to-wake please DooMLoRD!), but there's only one custom kernel for now and it requires a UB, so I'm waiting on that till they fix the TA partition stuff (though I know you can just restore the TA partition to fix the camera I don't feel the need to yet).
And to answer the questions:
1) Yes
2) Wait and see
3) Yes or they'll be abandoning their flagship phone to word of mouth and stale OS - not going to happen.

Sony and S/E HAVE done this before, look at the history...
Here is my answers to the 3 questions:
1. Proberbly not, it is a way to keep people from custom roms.
This way Sony can still claim "open bootloader" and "dev friendly", but Sony have done it this way for a reason...
2. Wait and see...
Without sources, the camera will proberbly not ever work on custom roms...
The way this phone is made, sony can in fact release sources as they have to, and leave out the sources for the camera...
3. Look at the Sony and S/E history... Android v4.3 is most certainly all you can expect, as they have to release 4.3 to meet Googles demands...
You will get bugfixes thoug...
I would have written "Sony is NOT stupid!" in the end of all 3 answers, but that looked a little angry...
- the fact is that Sony have NEVER done anything by mistake...!

Android 4.3 or 4.4

Does anybody know which major firmware update we will be receiving next and when?
Sony seems to be awfully quiet lately regarding their update schedule.
With 4.4 on the horizon it's unfortunate the Z1 shipped with 4.2 instead of 4.3 but it wouldn't be so bad if Sony at least gave us a rough estimate.

They will probably update it to 4.3, and after it to 4.4
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
I remember reading somewhere that they are saying 4.3 would roll out in October. But I am not sure where and how accurate is this
Knowing Sony smartphones for years, i'd say there will be a really late 4,3 update as promished, and after that the phone will not get any more updates...

there is a major update on the way as reported on xperiablog - the last 4 digits are changing which usually indicates something more than a bug fix but not likely 4.3

I'm not to sure about this update... This 1 rumour came up and nothing has been seen about it ever since.. I personally would take it with a pinch of salt for now!
The question is IF there will be a major update from Sony for the Z1 after 4.3...
And the answer is "most definitely not!"
Don´t get me wrong, i love all my sony phones, but the updates is allways missing.
Sony has released new phones many times before with an older android installed at shipping date, and then made the promished "major update" after that, to the newest current version a month or two later... This way Sony is fulfilling Goggles demands about at least two major versions, without actually giving the customer anything new at all...
Nothing new in that, just look at Sony history...
IF Sony on the other hand SHOULD decide to release 4.4 down the road, it will definitely be without keyfeatures like sony camera features and so on...
Look at the history...
Just go back and read it, start eg. with the Xperia X10...
WHEN you buy a Sony phone, you have to understand that the promished firmware is ALL you will ever get, and that Sony WILL abandon all updates faster than you can count to 10...
(So only small bug-fixing can be expected after 4.3 for the Z1)
At first it looks like Sony is working hard to put out a working current Andriod version for the phone, but they are not... absolutly not !
Just sit for 2 sec. and think about this:
WHY would Sony at all ship a brand new phone, with an older Android version installed at shipping date ?
Would Sony not have to do just as mutch work to put out the older 4.2.2, as they have to if they decided to put out 4.3 from the shipping date ?
The ONLY difference is that IF they shipped with 4.3 then they had to update to 4.4 also to fullfill Googles demands, but with 4.2.2 as shipping firmware, and a fast update to 4.3, they don´t...
This Sony-scam is ONLY to fullfil Googles demands, nothing else...

All these issues are fixed with custom roms yes? Official releases don't matter anymore then?
Also, will they atleast release a big update for the camera, other bugs and unlocked bootloader issue?

I'm not to bothered about this to be honest, maybe they can change but we have a Snapdragon 800 and Qualcomm actually release their sources (cough Samsung cough) so Cyanogenmod performance will be like awesomeness, I have my concerns regarding the camera's future with Sony being to stuck up to release the sources.

Ok then, i did read the question as if it was a question for official firmware, not custum roms...
- and my answer was becource of that, minded on the official SONY firmwares...
Custom firmwares is a whole other matter, and mutch harder to guess anything about yet...
- THAT only depend on how many people who buy this phone, and who of the devs here at XDA will work with it...
You need attention from a fantastic dev to get unofficial firmware flying...
BTW:
the history shows that Sony have NOT been fantastic releasing sorces before, so don´t count on it, but keep your fingers crossed...

The phone say to you when it is a big update, and you need PCcompanion (or in the old days SEUS).

[1day] Thinking about buying Z1... need fast advice!

Hello,
I was i 3 shops today and found 1 where Z1 wasn't yellow or anything like that.
Screen was good, white was white, but i'm a bit scared about:
1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj1P0X12r_A
2) http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/11/0...ys-for-xperia-z-series-suggests-leaked-info/W
3) Community support i don't see a lot ROMS for this device, and i'm mostly interested about CM11 4.4.2 / Carbon KK (does it work well?)
Will also check *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service Info > Configuration > Rooting Status [Bootloader Unlock Allowed]
I was thinking also about Nexus 5, but 32GB isn't available in my country and getting it in almost same price az Z1 isn't really a deal for me.
I like also Z1 overall better than N5 but i can't choose.
Will buy it tomorrow , so please if anybody will tell me about yes/no or any advices ASAP i will be thankful! :highfive:
Well Sony just announce the Z2. If you can wait until Z2 I would go for that. If you can't wait I would go for Z1. In my eyes Z1 is better than Google Nexus 5.

How about:
-Wifi (signal)
-GSM (Calls signal etc)
-Speaker volume?

GSM signal is good. Are you using it on T-Mobile? With custom roms there are problems using it on T-Mobile network. The receiver do get echo effect on custom rom. I do get a problem with one of my bluetooth device which can't seem to auto connect, name of device Flexsmart X3. I don't seem to have any speaker volume problem with mines. Wifi seems to be ok, might want to wait for someone to answer that one since I hardly use Wifi on my device due to having unlimited data plan with T-Mobile. I have to turn on and off tethering a lot before it works. Right now I am using CM11 with the latest nightly build. My device model is C6903.

1. Touchscreen problem has been FIXED on 14.2.A.1.136, for the sake of truth I've test it
2. I've never found cracked display on Z1 yet. So I can't say anything about it. Anyway, the level of your luck is depend on your persuasive level. More persuasive you are, the more chance to get warranty.
3. Sony has been fixed dead camera bug on December 2013. Anyway, dead camera bug is something you get if you unlock your bootloader. With some kind of bug like that, just a little number of developers dare to take the risk. Until the bug has fixed by Sony, all developers now can build custom ROM and kernel without worries. We've developed custom ROM and Kernel actively since December. That means the developing has running for 2 months. That's why we have no many choices YET.

The update 14.2.A.1.136 didn't fix the problem with touchscreen. Just mask it. The problem is still there and it appeard every day in daily use. It is a hardware issue, not software.
Don't have the touchscreen issue myself (in diagnostics screen test it works fine at least 3 or 4 times in a row... can't be bothered to try more ).
But if you can access the service menu, can't you access the screen test as well? So you can check if there are any obvious flaws.
About custom roms, check the relevant threads to see if the things you want are available and if they work (something personal anyway, issues one person can't be bothered about can be major for another). My main issue is that the Z1 camera app from sony only works on the stock roms, that's my reason for staying with a stock based rom (Monxdified atm, working just fine).

The speaker isn't as loud as I would like it to be. Vibration is also weak (loud but weak). Those and the screen are my top three complaints about the phone. I get better Wi-Fi and GSM/HSPA with the Z1 than I did with my older Galaxy S2 and S3, and better than my wife's iPhone 5S. Battery life is impressive coming from the Galaxies. And I really don't see the need to go from Sony's ROM to an AOSP one: the ROM is very light and functional, Xposed alone is enough to make it as flexible as CM/Omni.
Touchscreen issues still happen on .136, but only when I specifically test for them (run a drawing app, lay down the phone, turn off the screen, hold your finger on the screen, turn the screen back on and draw without removing your finger: you'll see a dotted line instead of a continuous one). I didn't have the colour balance issues, but that is fixed with the balance settings.
Thanks for answers i will buy nexus5..
The phones in shop with good screen had botloader locked NO = can't unlock lol) and the unlockable 2 of them had yellowish screen...
Thanks anyways again guys!

Why is it so difficult to develop on this phone?

... Is the question we get asked ALL the time on this forum. This is currently being written on my phone so there might be some typos. I'm going to try and explain why we as a community find it so hard to develop for this phone and maybe how we can solve it.
1. AOSP
Maybe one of the biggest issues with this phone - AOSP, and the device tree.
When Sony made this phone in 2014, Jellybean was originally made with this phone and it was very stable - whereas Sony rushed the Kitkat update, meaning that many, many bugs were left unfixed making the phone unstable. Sony couldn't be bothered to then support this phone any further and left us with this heap of a mess. They also rushed the kernel too - and this is where AOSP comes into play.
I recently posted in the AOSP support fourms about our phone and Sony said to boot into AOSP the phone would need to have extensive changes to the kernel to boot into AOSP. The reason they would have to make these changes (and by that they mean rework the entire ROM and firmware) is because Sony rushed the Kitkat update making everything unstable. This means that we have no full device tree meaning that building from source is very difficult. This is why Caio's CM11 is very buggy atm. Hopefully Caio and Kizoky will make a breakthrough soon. Good luck!
2. Why do we have so many Stock UI modified ROMs? (Yes, there is more to it than that)
It literally links in with the top post.
Because we have no full sources, we can't build free, custom ROMs that have nothing to do with Sony. If Sony gave us this (which right now Sony are not playing ball) we could, of course, build custom ROMs.
3. No support/repoduction? (I dont know if this phone is still being made)
Sony made a bad job of this phone; god, I would not buy this phone if it wasnt given to me. Support has ended for this phone because of its unpopularity; high cost, low-end specs, rushed updates. When Kitkat came out for us the update (as we know) was very rushed and a lot of users just... left this phone to mirgrate to different phones - my dad left this for a Galaxy A3 - and my god, what a phone that is for the price. Of course, a LOT of devs then left this phone, and so Sony left this phone as well.
This thread is in no way finished yet - there are many more things to add. I'm gonna get my hands dirty with this phone soon when summer break comes around for me, but ill start small until then. My plans are kernel first then maybe PA4 or CM developing, not sure yet.
Caio's and Kizoky's posts - thanks to them, @Caio99BR and @Kizoky
@Caio99BR
4. Why do the devs not like to develop for this device?
First because that reason #1 in first post, second because this is a low-end device, many of then not have a full developer (eg L1II, Xperia E) and when have most of then try to do something but is stopped by low knowledge or some impossible fix problem, third in my opinion is because confusion made in building a ROM to a new device.
5. Why are you building KitKat(CM11) and not JellyBean4.3(CM10.2)?
First problem: DualSim
Only CM11 support it, and we not have only the Single Variants, I have choiced this too for L3II, and this have been released with JB4.1.
After it this not have problems, the CM10.2 is more stable and with less ram consumption (like CM10.1 is more more stable and etc), but is more time lose if we back to it now, if someone want to make it, go and Good Luck
6. Why the greatest devs not make something to this device?
First thing is time, or if not time, just forgived this, 2 Recognized Developers (Yes, its a ****ing awesome flag) said "I have got this phone and I will do something for him", one posted at here on XDA, and other said it to me (member of FXP Team - greatest Team behind some Sony devices), today no one of two have made nothing, this last said "I will help you" but no, @Kizoky helped more than him, but I'm of subject.
By final its more a revolt than a answer, good devs after get flags, reputation, forgive simple things and not help others or not make that things he did to gain prestige.
Sorry if it not answer the ask, but it's the true, also sorry my english, its damaged.
@Kizoky
7. Low end phone
8. High price when phone released (Xperia E1 2014: 512mb 3MP Sony you are drunk vs. Xperia M 2013: 1024mb 5MP lower price)
9. Not available in the U.S
Good luck all with developing!

Some fun facts:
* The touchscreen used in Xperia E1 is more old than JB, made for MTK devices
* The bar led is the same used Xperia E
* Maybe because the Camera sensor Sony not builded the Lollipop for this device, since it's too old too, and need some hacks in kernel to make it work (by now camera sensor is broken on my LP and after in MM ROM :/)
I think that's all, just for annotation.

And sources for E1 is garbage
JB was rushed, and left buggy
KK was rushed, and left more buggy than JB
Sony didn't even bother to make this phone stable (and even refused to help E1 users)
Your CM11 is still has bugs, but it is more stable than Stock ROM, I wonder why..

New to Xperia, what to consider?

Hey there.
I'm new to the Xperia scene, before I had various Samsung devices since the S1.
This means I'm pretty spoiled. The first thing I usually did on my S devices was rooting and installing CyanogenmodLineageOS, and it always worked flawlessly.
Now coming to the Xperia devices, what will the problems be that I'll face?
From what I've seen in the guides section, unlocking, rooting and TWRP is possible and already available, but there are some caveats with unlocking (loosing some proprietary features).
Second, what are the chances of getting LOS for this device?
im also new here and this finally looks like my kind of smartphone. Its small, premium and has pretty damn good features including a headphone jack! Currently on a OnePlus 5 and its.... okay? They really cheaped out on lots of things to make the stupid camera better which it still kinda sucks. Especially the glass on the front.... ive got scratches galore and it sits in my left pocket ALONE CONSTANTLY. the fact that it has any scratches is bullsh**.
Enough ranting, I'd love for this thread to get more attention! I just really want to know what this thing will cost. hopefully under 500.... or even less than that. Its a tiny phone cmon price tag.... wondering how this battery will do and what kind of dev support it will be getting! definitely will check up whenever this thing comes out
Where do you see the root is available? There is only a bounty thread to someone find a rooting method. And I think due to Android 8 and it's new features it will be not easy.
So for now accept the Sony stock ROM, Sony makes pretty clean ROMs so it should be a joy for you to use something new
About loosing some functionality (like Sony DRMem photo processing, Track ID license etc.), on previous Xperias you loose these functions only when you're unlocking the bootloader. If there is a rooting method with locked bootloader then you loose nothing (for example on Z3 Compact).

With Root, I was referring to the "All Things XPERIA" thread, and to unlocking the bootloader.
Should be no problem to achieve root like that, however then there's the DRM-stuff...
The ROM itself is fine, but I tend to rely on some things like Titanium Backup and Tasker.
Guess the Xperia line isn't the best choice for me after all.
Shame cause I already preordered ;D

Bare in mind that is a general reference for previous devices and until XPERIA devs get devices with Oreo then it's going to be a waiting game.

Why are there so few Custom ROMs for this device?

Hey there,
I've been watching this forum for a while, but I still can't figure out why this device does not get more attention from ROM developers. AFAIK, there are only like one or two semi-active non-stable ROMs for this device. One of my previous phones was a Sony Z1 Compact, which was released almost 5 years ago, and there still is more activity in the Z1 ROM forum than here. Additionally, this device shipped with Oreo and therefore should support Project Treble, which should (theoretically) make it easier to create Custom ROMS. I'm not here to criticize, just genuinely curious, because I know for a fact that there are quite a few active developers who worked their butt off to make it able to backup the DRM keys on this device (thanks a lot btw!).
The amount of persons buying compact cellphone has reduced drastically over the years.

On the other hand, I don't feel a need for custom ROMs at all. Manually debloating the stock Sony ROM makes for a satisfactory, bug-free experience.

This.
Of course there are many roms for old devices, but keep in mind this aren't Lollipop days anymore.
To me, starting from 7 Nougat, Android is a complete auto sufficient OS
I agree that now Android has what a standard user needs. However, a custom ROM is still necessary if one wants to get rid of Google Apps and take full control of the system and the phone.
So I hope at least Lineage OS will be developed for our xz1c.

Here I am still waiting for a CarbonROM for XZ1 Compact.

You mean like this one?

Sure, it's unofficial and no longer updated, but it's still a build...

Yeah, I saw this one, but as you have said it is: 1. unofficial. 2. No longer updated. Look like a strong points not to even try it, considering your phone being a daily driver, not just a test subject.
It's too soon for a smartphone that has only one year and some months in the market, and the price still around 300euros.
Wait some time and i'll be sure that some people start to make more noise about this model. Or another option, to start to learn Java or other tech to help the community!!
Check for example the Z5 compact (released on October 2015), has lot of different roms and still is a good deal (i have it running with LineageOS 14.1 till past Xmas)
Never Sony again for me. The Acro S had great support though. The good old days with proper Xposed. If I only could afford the S10. Got a S5 laying around, but I love the fingerprint scanner on this phone, so no going back to the S5.
