[Problem] Screen freezing and browser stutter - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted a thread in the Internation Galaxy Note 3 section but I thought I may get more of a response in here since it might be an issue with the NA Note 3.
Just picked up a Galaxy Note 3 from Rogers yesterday. This is one amazing phone.
I've been having issues with my phone though and I wanted to know if anyone else has been experiencing this.
My screen from time to time will become unresponsive....doesn't matter what I'm doing. To fix this issue I usually have to turn off the screen and turn it back on for it to work again or i can wait a couple of seconds and then it'll start recognizing my inputs.
As for the browser I notice that the scrolling is not as smooth as it was on my Note 2. The scrolling stutters a little bit.
If anyone knows a quick fix or is this just an isolated incident with my phone and I may have to do an exchange. Any help will be appreciated.
BTW my cousin seems to be having the same issue that I am and he also picked up his phone from Rogers yesterday.

I have the att version (black). I've been using it since yesterday morning and haven't noticed any issues. Maybe isolated to Rogers version...

Scroll in the browser any page with images. Try www.gawker.com, the stuttering is very annoying and obvious at medium scrolling speed. And it's not just limited to that site.
Btw I also have the AT&T version. I doubt it's a specific handset issue. I just think this phone stutters in certain situations such as browsing.

I've tried the website you provided and yes I'm getting the stutter still. How about your screen becoming unresponsive/hanging? Have you encountered that issue?
It's been about an hour or so and I haven't seen it so far. I'm sure it'll be back

I haven't seen the screen stop working or hanging.
I think Samsung has several bugs they need to iron out.
I even have slight stutter in videos in Youtube. The Note 2 would play the same video fluidly. Is it Samsung? Is it 4.3? I don't know. But I have a feeling it's Samsung.

I also have the AT&T Note 3 and I have been getting the issue as well where my screen stops responding to FINGER touches, but if I pull out the stylus, it responds to that just fine.
It seems to get into this state in a variety of apps & games, as well as on my home launcher screen.
Only thing that resolves it is turning the screen off and on again.

Same effects on my fresh out of the box German Version unbranded (upgraded to 4.3 stock).
I wanted to replace my Note 2 but I am not really satisfied with the Note 3.
They removed small features e.g. in the browser and shortcuts on lockscreen.
I didnt want to root but obviously I have to...
The new browser seems to be chrome with just another gui....
Pretty poor!

Same problem with my att note 3 as well. .. Have to turn off screen and turn it on to unfreeze.

Att note 3 no screen problems, no freezes here. I don't use the stock browser but any browser has occasional stutter depending on traffic, bandwidth and content. Tried them all, settled for maxthon now.

Google Currents - another killer app

I live in Canada so can't download Currents from the Market, but you can easily find an .apk with a quick Google search.
Currents is exactly the killer app I was looking for to read my Reader streams. I love Flipboard on the iPad and this is its equivalent for Android tablets. It's extremely smooth and looks awesome on the GT 7.7.
This makes all the difference!!!
I agree currents is a pretty great app. It seems a little aggressive on the data and battery use but that can be manually stopped. It can make almost any article based site look good and the sites that have custom made currents look great.

I have it set-up for 6-hour intervals. My GT is WiFi only but I left it on all day (sporadic use to be honest) with syncing Email/Calendar, Twitter, FB in background (as well as Currents...) and it only consumed 25% in over 10 hours.
i couldn't agree more. one of the few apps on my homescreen!
Now we're talking!
Superb app! Marvellous to encounter a slick purpose built tablet app, and looks phenomenal on the 7.7.
Guaranteed recipe to wow your mates - 7.7 + Currents + 500px. Job done.
My only issue with google currents is the "500px magazine" (photos). When you click on one of the photos, then swiping to next/previous photo is not responsive at all most probably is because it waits for the next/previous photo to be loaded
Hey, do you get the pictures of + 500px in G. Currents in full screen? I can only see them in the upper left corner, about 50% size of the screen ...
Google Currents Bug
I seem to have an issue, which no one else mentioned here (or anywhere else on the web yet). I used Google Currents on Asus Transformer with no problems, but same app on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 does not display the articles properly, there is a overlapping column on the right side (as seen on the picture). I have tried all the possible settings, small/medium/large font...the problem remains. Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause and solution??? Thanks in advance!!!

did you change your lcd density?
I have the same issue with columns all messed up. I'm running rooted stock without density change.
Then again ; I live in Switzerland where Currents is not available so I got it through Market Enabler. Don't know if that could create the issue.

Instead of sarcasm you might try starting a thread about your issue.
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium App
Ok, resolved. The density needed to be changed. You can achieved that with a free app from android market. Btw, no sarcasm in my previous post whatsoever. I guess computercommunication makes people a tad paranoid.
Uh... changing density is hardly a solution. I mean sure one can do that, but the app itself should support different resolution/size/density to be considered a "killer app" !
What I really don't get is how people have it working without changing density as I haven't.

For me: embedded YouTube videos run much better in the browser than before... They were unwatchable in 4.3.

Does art speed up the actual app (like scrolling, etc) or just load times?
The smart dialer is by far the best feature.
Print Support
Print Support.
I use a commercial software to scan my documents with the Nexus 4 camera and turn them into PDF.
I was used to upload them into Dropbox and print them as soon as I got into my office.
Now I just point (for theatrical) my Nexus 4 towards the printer and shazam! I got a copy of my documents

Actually, with regards to embedded videos, it does not seem to work anymore for those that I have in my Pocket articles.
Just a "Couldn't load plug-in" error message.
But other than that, i think the new dialer does mirror my usage style of not keying in numbers all the time, but just that few contacts. nice feature there.
1 - ART. That makes me keep my Nexus 4 and now only waiting for Nexus 6 next year
2 - The new dialer. A think Google got a point here.

Yes but you're not going to like it. Uninstall Google Search completely from your device, then install the AOSP launcher from CM11 rom, it's the same as Google launcher without the Google Now integration. It doesn't gone an extra row for home screen either, but it does show more apps in the drawer.

Yes the dialer has been my main frustration for a long time, having no t9 support. When it did, the limited display of 3 contacts with only name + number was somewhat dissapointing, especially since htc implemented that feature from day one it seemed.
I do miss the opportunity to switch functions using a swipe though (the dialer pad button is a little hard to press wile on a bicycle ), but overall I think it's a huge improvement, especially with the mentioned bonus point that it identifies numbers from businesses that are not in my contacts!
I like how Google didn't give us transparency on stock /s
I would say the new dialer and music lock screen are my favorites so far

Trouble with YouTube

I'm getting 30+ Mbps down and YouTube still stops to buffer every couple seconds. Anyone else have this problem?
I'm on Verizon. WiFi or 4G makes no difference. Developer edition w/ exposed and gravity box.
I've tried everything I can think of except wipe 100% back to stock.
I was having this issue today. It might be on google server's side.
Just ran a video on YouTube, vzw 4g lte not even hitting 30 Mbps in my location and not a bit of buffering here. Running kryptons ROM. Clear cache/data on YouTube worth a shot before a full reset.
I really think this is a YouTube thing
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Free mobile app
My wife's GS4 can play the same YouTube videos flawlessly. Super frustrating.
Did you try uninstalling all updates to the Youtube app?
I have issues with YouTube on all of my internet-connected devices.
It's most likely Verizon, though sometimes it might be on Google's side.
Here was my scenario (Verizon performance issue):
Had Verizon 4G LTE with 63Mbps down ("XLTE")
Tried to load an HD video, and it just stayed in the loading/buffering stage and would maybe play 1-2 frames every 15-20 seconds.
My friend's internet was from Time Warner Cable, so I connected to his Wifi, and I **** you not, the video loaded and fully buffered in about a second with 15Mbps down.
Once I turned off Wifi, the video stopped playing once the pre-loaded/buffered section ended.
So, I'm pretty much done with Verizon.
This **** is also driving me crazy, get 35mbs and can't stream 480p YouTube
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
I don't think its verizon. I can tether my tablet to my motox and the tablet will play youtube just fine. Try to load yhe same thing on the x and it pauses and buffers. I'm going to do a full reset. Ill post my results here. (Willprobably be a few days.)
I'm on vzw as well. The YouTube app buffers as soon as launched on 4G. If the same video is opened via chrome there is no buffering.
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I wouldn't give Verizon the benefit of the doubt usually, but I just streamed 10GB of data from my Plex server over the weekend without so much of a hiccup
If you uninstall the youtube app updates it works without buffering. It must be an app issues with our device. I am using Verizon and was having the same buffering issues and once I uninstalled the youtube app updates the app works again without buffering every 5 secs.
So we can't have the latest YouTube updates.....amazing

Memory leak still in 5.0.1 causes apps to close

After the update to Lollipop 5.0.1 I noticed my phone would suddenly stop all apps from running and a short time later redraw the home screen.
It's VERY frustrating - using the note four to perform important functions is impossible because it is not reliable.
Imagine you are extracting information from various sources to compile an email and then all stops. You can't recall the info you've found, nor the mail you were composing.
Where I once trusted my Note implicitly while working, I use it now only to play games.
At least on my LG I can be sure of what I am doing.
It's a random problem, but reproducible and half of me is angry at Google, the other just fed up with Samsung now.
N.B. anyway, for those who need to be sure when on the net, Cheetah Browser at least opens up to the pages you last were on even though you still must reload. Your unfinished email will be gone but if you were using net specific info to compose, at least you can reconstruct.
Not all browser's will survive the memory problem by the way, even though they say they allow you to restart your session from previously opened pages.
Thought this might be useful.

You are right, the memory leak & aggressive memory management that lead for killing active apps in background is a common problem in 5.0.1 update, the fix should come with 5.1.1 update.
the real problem is that Samsung forget about updating all devices including Note 4, and they are just working & updating Galaxy S6 / 6 Edge issues.
Samsung just care about future customers, current customers will kept on hold.
Our voice should reach Samsung ..........I believe we should move to social media, future customers should get an idea about how Samsung ignoring us.
we need a hashtag on Twitter & page in Facebook, regarding Samsung ignorance for Note 4 issues & late updates in some regions where update could take months to reach some countries.
I really feel sorry for buying Samsung device.
This is not a problem only with Samsung. It is a general problem with all brands. All the topics are filled with de satisfied clients complaing about the updates or bugs. Unfortunately this is the market and they are looking only for the profits of new devices sales. I wonder what it will happen in about six months with the users of the S6 who payed as us a lot of money for there devices.

The best predictor of future behavior is … past behavior, says Dr. Phil :laugh::highfive::highfive:
I can confirm this issue. You mention browsers, and Opera Beta is managing very well. Other random apps suffer from this issue.
Now that Note 4 has reached Android 5.0.1, my prediction is that Samsung won't update it anytime soon. Waiting for LG G4.
there isnt memory leak. apps are just large like samsung browser can eat 500 mb ram but its not leak. ram management just same with kitkat. all samsung firmwares has fix for android 5.0 s own memory leak.
if you wanna see whats memory leak just use s6 i can assure you its headache. no where near note 4. note 4 is multitasking king next to s6.
So what did they change in 5.0.1?
I have noticed a bit of 'memory leakage'. When using larger apps like Chrome for longer periods along with e.g. Office Mobile and Video Editor or launching the Camera or a game, some of the apps that would stay up in KitKat simply close in Lollipop, but I have to be really pushing the phone to get that to happen.
On normal daily use I use:
-Opera Mini and Samsung browser to web browse
-WhatsApp
-Instagram
-FB
-Twitter
-Google News&Weather
-Gmail (two accounts: work and personal)
-built-in Email app for my 2nd personal account (Outlook)
-and Music Player
And the phone seems to handle it all just fine, but when I throw in the Camera then things can get a little bit much and I begin to see apps closing, but even then its not all the time.
It is very frustrating when you're multi-tasking and have several windows open.
I love doing this stuff with the note4. Take some time to get used to doing but once you're onto it, no other phone is as productive - until it's all undone by Lollipop closing your apps!
I stuck with it for a month because it's pretty - however, after a month I couldn't stand it anymore. Back to Kitkat and happier for it.

The "multitasking king" getting the hiney kicked?

http://bgr.com/2015/08/25/galaxy-note-5-vs-iphone-6-speed-test/
After seeing this Samsung must really have dorked the memory management really bad on the Note, it seem even worse than my old S6 Edge killing apps in the background all the time. Why put 4 GB of ram when you cant use them? Is it really this bad killing all the apps and have to reaload them or is the video totally wrong?
This is ancient news. Geez. Welcome to 3 days ago. LOL

Sold my edge but thought they had fixed that annoying background killing. Samsung must be really stupid, one of the biggest advantages of the Note is totally dorked. Was thinking of getting the Edge+ as the Note not will be coming to Sweden but after Seeing this Samsung will not get my money
Shocking BGR published this. In my day to day use I don't notice any problems. I have a 6+ and it isn't any better.
For example. I use a radio app that if I pause it it will continue to record the station until I come back to it and pick up where I left off. Same app on the iPhone if I pause it and come back later it never keeps my recording. This has always been my personal test between the 2 OS's.
These side by side tests are not real world usage and prove nothing.

i keep my benchmarks based on how i'd actually use the device. launching a buncha apps then relaunching (without ever using them) is something i see myself rarely doing.
That is my point. I'm not defending how samsung is doing the memory management, as it seems stupid.
But in practice, for my usage this doesn't seem to come into play often/at all. So FOR ME this just isn't a big deal.
iOS doesn't background multitask like Android. If you start a SSH/telnet, IRC, ftp/ftps/stftp, etc. session then put it in the background iOS will kill it after 3 minutes. If they had repeated the test but wait after 3 minutes to relaunch the apps then the results would come out different.
http://www.speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html
No one uses a device like that that i know of. If you multitask between 2 or 3 apps (AND you're not using multiwindow) there isn't a problem with apps being killed. The phone is lightning fast. If you're flipping between 14 apps, you're either an idiot or autistic.

+1 the problem seems to happen when you multitask on more than 8 apps I think it is a feature to save battery then
use the task switcher instead of re clickkng the icon to get back to the running app
From my personal experience, I ran Hearthstone, Vainglory, Chrome, iFunny, and Pandora at once without any apps being killed. Then continued with Youtube, Facebook, and then Hangouts. Only then did apps begin getting killed. So I really don't see this to be a problem for sensible people.
I was aware of this issue but the 'real world' impact is negligible AT BEST. I just opened my gallery as it was '12 apps ago', it came up in the flash. There are some newfeed apps that do reload but I WANT IT to because I want to be reading the new stuff - just like it would I loaded it as a first-time app.

Imagine however it was Microsoft word which comes with the device or Tapatalk. What if you halfway through writing a post or a word document, you background the app and check email, look at web browser, check s-planner and then take a call or text someone. You then go back to your word document or Tapatalk post and the app refreshes - resulting in you losing everything you had previously written. No matter how quick it reloads that would be an utter pain. The fact is - 4gb, 2015, fastest ram and SOC, it shouldn't happen. We should expect more.
Posted using Tapatalk
Have you ever had that problem in Word? I haven't, and tried exactly what you listed as an example...
I understand your point, though.
