[Q][FIXED] HTC One Dual Sim (802w) killing SD Cards?? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm having a strange problem with my newly acquired HTC One 802w (M7_DUG). As you may know, this version has a slot for an external SD Card.
Coming from the Defy I had a 32GB Class 10 Samsung SD Card that I installed on the One. A few days later (always running on stock ROM) I notice that the SD Card is no longer recognized. I then switched to a 4GB Class 4 Kingston SD Card just to see if that one worked well, but no, it also stopped being recognized a few days later. On the last try yesterday I used a 8GB Class 2 nobrand SD Card and today is fried again!
When I try to connect them to the computer they are not recognized (nor I can format them) and the cards are hot as hell! I mean REALLY hot. This obviously does not let me dig further because I unplug them right away. This leads me to believe that there's some kind of short circuit inside the card.
I honestly don't know what to do as obviously I don't want to keep kililng sd cards! Anyone experiecing the same problem?
Here are my specs:
HTC One 802w M7_DUG
ROM MaximusHD 1.0.2 Rooted
Unlocker bootloader
S-ON
EDIT: Solution here
EDIT 2: This seems to apply to BLACK models only. SILVER model seems unaffected from this issue.

No. i use a 64 gb samsung micro sd for 3 month now in my dual. All working fine.

Hi! I have the same problem - one of my SD cards died in 802w... And some other man from our russian forum 4pda also had such problem.
My idea of what happens is that it's just the mechanical damage. There are some projections on the inside of the back cover which are supposed to hold SD and SIM cards in place so they don't slip out of slot (?), but the problem is they're placed too close to the slot's end. So if you close the back cover that projection may press on SD card's end and just cracks it in two pieces.
At least that's what happened with my microSD... First I didn't notice it but then checked and it's really cracked. So this may be an answer - careful people tell that cards work normally, and strong people like us [ ] experience dead cards...

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try with another card and see what happens. I will report back.:good:

SOLUTION!
Well...sorry for the late reply but took me a long time to dig into this.
As @vitalif mentions the SD Cards suffers a mechanical damage. This is due to the pressure received from the protuberance in the removable back cover that should supposedly keep the SD card in place (not needed though as card/SIMS are physically held by the slot, but c'est la vie!)
The first thing I tried is to remove the small dent all Micro SD cards have but these cards are very sensible and the circuitery reaches this place as well, so I ended up ruining a few of them.
The solution I found was to use a dremel to remove that protuberance from the back cover as you can see on the attached photos. This has to be done with patience and probably better to have experience with these tools.
With this method I have been using the same SD Card for the past two months with no problems at all!

very interesting, i use my samsung microsd card from the begining and not damage at all. Maybe only black version have this problem , mine is silver and i open cover almost once per day .

802d in silver here and never faced sd card issue , using it since august.

using silver and no problems for past 5 months.

This seems to be a black edition only problem so far....any silver edition out there with this problem?

Same problem on black 802d model
The phone (black 802d) just broke my Kingston 32Gb microSDHC in half.
The back lid was not laying flat on the back since it was pushing against the sdcard, probably in my pocket, it got squeezed tighter, applying all the pressure via the back-panel extrusion onto the sdcard, which cracked it. Lost all my data

Yeah, is a pain in the neck. I also lost all my data.
You should try my solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49903638&postcount=5
So far this seems to be a BLACK edition problem only.

I recently bought a new SILVER edition htc one 802d and then i purchased a 32gb sandisk uhs micro sd.
Don't know why it killed the micro sd after 3 weeks, so it appears to be all htc one dual sim problem not the black edition only.

[Q] upgrading original SD card.

Firstly I am a silver surfer and not too technically minded.
I have a HTC Salsa phone. Apart from "unmounting " my original sd card that came with the phone and taking it out, is there anything else to do as I am putting a 16gb sd card into the phone?
There are one or two other questions but will see how this one goes first.
Thanks.

[Q] HD7 SIM/SD reader repair question.

I have a question for anyone on the forum who has experience repairing HTC HD7 handsets.
I recently bought a HTC HD7 on ebay with a "storage card error," message thinking I could easily repair it re-seating or replacing the SD card and doing a hard reset. By swapping out parts from another HTC HD7 I had, I was able to diagnose the problem as a faulty SD card reader. The SPL bootloader would read "SD SANDISK 15193MB" when the working reader was connected, and "SD NONE" when the defective reader was connected using the same card. The SIM card reader worked in both cases.
I ordered a SIM/SD reader assembly replacement from an ebay seller, I installed it, and it acted just as the defective reader I already had... SIM works, SD card doesn't. I got a replacement from the same seller, and it acts exactly the same.
Just wondering if I'm overlooking something, or if it's possible I got two SIM/SD reader assemblies where the SD card reader is the defective component on both.
The reader was sold as for the HTC HD7 T9292 (mine is the T-Mobile US version.) There is a slight difference in the labeling. The replacements had extra text "myd" on them, and had a number 1045 on them instead of the original 1041.
have you tested the sd? all that you have written sounds like a defective sd, have you tried another sandisk on it? even a 2GB would do... also do you have a nokia E series to format and recovery the microsd? I use a E63 to recover the miscrosd used on wp, and test them on windows...

Your bootloader version needs to be 5.xx or higher

I have tested it with a couple different SD cards. As I said, it works with my other SIM/SD reader assembly that I swapped out from another working HD7, it just doesn't work with the replacement part ones I ordered.

Can you explain this? I'm using the latest deepshining ROM on this phone, so the bootloader has never been above version 3.1.2250. I'm willing to go stock WP7.8 with the version 5.xx bootloader if you think it will help the situation, but I did get the SD card to work under HSPL 3.1.2250 and a swapped-out SIM/SD reader assembly. At this point I'm just considering buying a horrible condition HD7 to swap out the SIM/SD reader assembly, since the replacement part ones I ordered don't seem to work.
The bootloader thing is BS, I have had 4 different bootloader on both of my devices: 1.x, 3.x, 4.x and 5.x; , I stayed with the 3.x, for the custom roms...
Now, if you have tested the reader from another HD7 and works fine, then the part you bought is damaged...
From where you bought that part?
You must buy again because the "replacement" is damaged (DOA)...
Regards

The problem is, I bought one, found it not to be working, and asked the seller for a replacement, which they sent for free. When I found the second one not to be working, I began to assume the problem was with me... that I was overlooking some logical thing that was keeping the part from working correctly. While I understand it's possible I may have received two defective parts, I hate to ask the seller for a third one, when it's possible I really don't know what I'm doing
This was the item
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151015786511
Anyway, I ordered a cracked-screen HD7 for cheap which I'm going to scrap for parts. Hopefully that one will work.
have you tested the replacements on the working phone? the good one? I assume: YES.
If the the answer is that, you knock me out! Just my 2 cents: I have the T-Mobile HD7, but that bastard can't work with 850 and 900 MHz GSM networks, only 1900 and (possibly) 1800MHz, it keeps resetting or freezing!!!
I thought that it was the microSD, but no it wasn't, so it's the radio card(the shielded one)
Some time you receive a rotten egg
like what happened to me...
Hope you figure out the solution... Regards.

Sony Xperia Z L36h sim card reader broken

Afternoon guys,
Dont ask me how, but my sister has well and truly buggered her sim card reader on her xperia z, i suspect she inserted her sim the wrong way round,
She sent it off and rightly so Sony sent it back saying they wont repair it due to user error
Now i have found a replacement sim card reader, and looked at a teardown guide,
was just wondering however if anyone had attempted it, from the tear down guide it looks like the sim reader is attached to the logic board so a replacement reader wouldnt exactly help, but i cant be sure till i open it up
Anyone with any advise would be greatly received

Xperia Z sim reader can be damaged by either using a nano sim adapter or placing sim incorrectly. Sony will not cover this error under warranty and yes the sim card reader is soldered onto the board like all other components. You will need the old damaged sim card reader soldered off from the motherboard and a new sim reader soldered onto the board this will definitely fix your issue i have fixed a few in the past with this same fault
Thanks

SONY did screw this model up, don't worry, is not your daughter fault, I damaged mine without sim adapter and always the sim was inserted facing backside of the phone, like in instructions, one pin was torn upside down. So thanks SONY for this ****ty sim card reader .
Back to your problem, I sugest take your phone to a professional technician for soldering the reader since others components wich are nearby could be damaged. Also, special tools like hot air soldering iron are necessary. Take care.

[Q] SD Card Problems

having some problems with sd cards on the z. bought a cheap 64G card off ebay and the phone reads it as 64 gigs but when i copied a bunch of videos and pictures to it from my laptop they showed on the windows file explorer but some didn't show up when i plugged it into the phone. also pictures taken with the phone say cannot save and the videos say cannot play this file. ok so i figured i got ripped with a bogus card on ebay and thats what i get for going for a deal that seemed too good to be true. bought another card this time a 64GB sandisk ultra that i know and trust because i have had the same exact card in another phone for over a year with no problems. well lo and behold same problem with this card in my wifes z. now i'm wondering is this a hardware issue? has anyone else had problems with 64GB cards? when i first put it in it didn't ask for a format or anything so i assume the z can handle these cards. her z is completely stock unrooted and running the latest 4.2.2
Is the card formatted as exFAT? I believe it has to be to work correctly in the Z.

Get the SD Association tool from here and format the card while it's in your PC via a card reader.
If it still doesn't work, you may have a faulty/counterfeit card. Return it for a refund and if you didn't buy directly from someone reputable (even a seller on Amazon may stock counterfeit cards), then do so.

originally it didn't ask for a format, but then i got an error stating card damaged and would i like to format it. this happened while trying to transfer a folder of videos onto the card yesterday. anyways it is formatted through the phone now and i just spent hours transferring all her photos and videos back onto it. i set her camera to save to the internal memory now so we'll see if the problem persists. if it happens again i will try to format with your tool one last time. thanks for your advice!

Micro SD Slot issue

I've looked everywhere all over the internet to see if anyone has experienced this issue with not many answers. A while back my Micro SD slot would not read after a few events that I'm not sure which one may be the cause. I have a 32gb Sandisk Class 10 it works and was the proper format when I had it in the phone, it works fine in other devices and phones but not my phone. One event I had was that my phone got extremely hot one day when I was using it outside on a very hot day. Had to turn it off for a little while. But the other event is that I used the test 4.4.2 one click odin back in august. After those few things my micro sd slot never worked again I flashed to an official 4.4.2 using odin and have root but still not able to see the sd card at all. I want to know what I can do, phone is out of warranty. Is there a software issue or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this. Could I just replace the logic board, and If that is the case could I replace the logic /mother board with one from a tmobile phone, unlocked bootloader.

At least if it's an SD card issue, getting a replacement is as easy as going to http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/list/kw/microsd microsdhc/ opening a live chat and asking for one.

Hard to say. Stock 4.4.2 should read the SD card, no matter what was there before. (If my many-times-bricked phone can still read the SD card with almost stock 4.4.2, yours should too.)
or would I have to replace the Micro SD/Sim Slot. Is there anyone that would be able to fix this.

It could be the slot. I'd ask around for recommendations where you live. Some shops are great, some just ruin your phone. (I know - I owned a few before I retired. The "techs" who just wanted to start repairing phones, with no training, made "dime a dozen" sound expensive. [Not that I ever hired one. You want to work for me, here's a phone that doesn't work. You have 30 minutes to call me from it.])

Probably. Not "you", though - someone who's opened a cellphone before, at least a few times. One wrong pinched wire and you'll need another motherboard. (The battery has enough power in it, when fully charged, to weld the plastic case to the wooden table - figuratively speaking. Pinch a wire with full battery current available to ground and you'll let all the "magic smoke" out of the phone and it'll stop working.)
...
Well I have opened up a few phones before its not that hard. As far as getting a local shop to swap the slot out that my prove to be a little hard considering were I live the people here are 10 years behind technology. Plus I think it would cost me as much as just buying a new logic board. What I really want is to flash a new rom to my phone I can deal with the 32gb of storage, but everytime I upload a rom and flash it from safestrap my internal memory goes to 0mb available then I have to odin reflash even when I load up via adb, when I restart the phone pass safe strap I just go into a black screen never does anything after that. Right now I'm just running stock 4.4.2 root
Well I think I answered my own question, just bought an OTG cable, I forgot about using a flash drive
