[HOW TO] GEAR with you OWN designed Watch face(s) - Samsung Galaxy Gear

This article might for those who owns Samsung Galaxy GEAR and wish to have your OWN designed watch face based on the Watchstyler Manager app. But still those watch faces haven't been called 'COOL!' yet.
I would like to guide you how to go for your REAL OWN designed watch face(s).
<< Method #1 >> This method is based on the Watchstyler manager app. + your graphic and design skills (ex. photoshop)

Using Watchstyler manager app (on your mobile device), you can create the watch face(s) [no matter how many watch faces you have created, but still you will see those folders on your device. [This is a MUST.]
(On you mobile device) Go to the following folder : phone memory > Android > data > com.omnutel.appcessory.gear.watchstyler.manager (or /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.omnutel.appcessory.gear.watchstyler.manager), you will see the 'theme' folder where there are the watch face(s) have been created. (just exactly the names of the theme you have created.)
(in each watch face profile, you will see all of image files) Just get those image files out from there in order to make any changes like colors, styles, patterns ... etc. After the moderation, just move those changed image files into the same folder such as :
- BG_PART.png
- PRV_IMG.png
- other image files (battery indicator, dates, time, bluetooth, hour, minute and second)
* remark : It needs to COPY those folders out from the device for modification on computer, then put it back to the same source (where they were taken out from).
<< Method #2 >> (not achieved yet, but still you can get all the image files for modification right on your computer)
Get the .APK file for watch styler app [samsung.android.app.watchmanager_1.2.130917.apk], then change the extenstion of the file from .apk to .zip
Exstract the .zip, you will see many folders inside, but look at the following destination : \assets\SampleThemeImages Here, you can get all the preloaded image files based on the WatchStyler app, then you can make some modification for later use.
* remark : I got stuck while packing the file back to .APK (I've tried, but unsuccessful. = That's what I said earlier "not achieved yet"), but in case that if on the rooted mobile device you might easily COPY / MOVE the image files (with modifications) back to the right folder on phone memory, I assume it will be more easier to do so via WatchStyler app laster on.
Hope it helps you make more watch face (on your OWN design). :good:

Thanks.
Its easy way.
You are so nice.

I was trying to rip the apk earlier today & yesterday & had the same put-it-together problem.
But just making a theme & overwriting the images it MUCH easier - nice find!!
Attached is my 5 minute proof-concept Mickey watch tests. Now I need to find a photoshop guy to make me a Mickey Body + Arms! (any takers??)

Great job!

it appears watch styler has been pulled from the app market.... I can no longer find it was a nice app that needed a bit of work but overall I like how customizable it is!

Ive posted the link somewhere on this forum. It is on my dropbox..

Why would they do such a thing?!? Maybe it's getting updated?
They should be uploading more apps and clock faces if they really want this watch to succeed.

I've forgotten, was it in the Android Play store, or the Samsung Gear store?
Glad I have a copy & backed up in Titanium & backed up the apk on my dropbox.
Making custom screens on the watch makes me very, very happy.

Thanks, I still have it installed, unfortunately im getting frustrated as sometimes it just looses the current skin and shows the initial "apply theme" screen and requires to apply the theme again... happens 1 or 2 times per day.. not great

Worked great. Only thing that sucks to me is that when I disconnect the Bluetooth the theme is lost. Have to reconnect and reapply.

When I try to install this to my phone I cant download Parsing issues

This is just what I was looking for!!!
I was just about to return my gear.
Thank you!

MINE

from time to time the watchstyler faces hang. Especially when i've broken usb connection temporarily, or walked too far away from my phone. Is there any way to place our completed watchstyler designs directly on the gear like the other faces that are there? This way, they should just show up on the list of faces, and perhaps they will not hang. I have gone ahead and rooted my gear, and used adb shell to check out the directory structure, but I cannot see where the default watch faces are sitting?
Just a thought......

this is the best news I've had all day!!!

fonts
Hi I have tryed the method #1 and replace a font in the text folder but when I apply the theme the default font is used, How can this be done?
thnx in advice

nice tut!

It's possible to modify also the digital clock? particularly the font (.ttf) of the clock and date, I've tried to change some parameters in theme.json (opened like simply txt) but Watch Styler has restored the default configurations, maybe by the second mode it's possible?

Slightly Modified E-buddy.
Hey, I've changed the eBuddy Icon, replaced the running Icon with the original notification icon and replaced the Notification Icon with the Eclair Messaging Icon. I felt they looked better (especially on Hero builds) its 100% stock otherwise, and since its a free app I'm sure this isn't illegal...here are some screen shots.

Can you tell me how you edited the apk file? I would like to get into doing this same sort of thing.
blackvyper: Open the apk with WinRAR or something similar, you'll find a drawables folder, inside that are the images you can edit. Once editting, put them back into the apk, and sign the apk . There're some instructions on signing apks here, one of them is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
thank you for this!!

I use to think it was a daunting task until I tried it out...editting APKs is one of the easiest things to do.
1. Set it so .apk's open with winrar...
2. extract the apk to a folder or ctrl+c ctrl+v the res>drawables folder into explorer (I do this so I can see the images I'm editing)
3. find the pngs u wish to alter (avoid .9.pngs unless u know what ur doing...I don't...so I avoid them lol)
4. alter/find replacements for selected pngs then ctrl+c ctrl+v them from the windows folder to the winrar open apk
5. within the open apk in winrar delete meta folder...
6. copy the modified apk to the auto-sign folder
7. run the script and rename then move/copy your_app_signed.apk to the sd card and install as usual.
***note...it is important that you keep the png size relatively the same for the most part...I tried to make a Buuf Hello IM and while it worked I forgot to resize the PNGs and it looks all out of wack...I have since abandoned the project however since eBuddy now works flawlessly without constant disconnects.
I have included a zip of the modified autosign script...I honestly forgot who originally made it but it has been very helpful so thank you to that person.
Those considering posting of modified files... should keep one thing in mind.
Free or not, you are still subject to the LICENSE TERMS.
Yes, it is possible to ILLEGALLY PIRATE a free app, and modification is *almost* guaranteed to be a license violation.
Note that without an explicit license, the developer STILL retains copyright, which includes the right against having their works bastardized. In other words, unless the app EXPLICITLY authorizes you to do what you want with it, it is a license or copyright violation to distribute modified versions of it.

Audio Manager
I changed the Audio Manager Widget to match the switcher widgets here on xda.
Here is the download link for the zipped APK.
The instructions above are great. I would recommend looking into 7-Zip its free and its awesome. If you want to change the *.9.png's there is a converter for normal pngs with the sdk.
Here's an image of what my audio manager looks like. There is a large and a small version of the widget. I also put the switcher widgets in the pic to show how it all looks.
Enjoy!!!

Surprised that they dont include them in their current roms.
Ya they should include them they are great and small brightness widget doesn't seem to work in Hero but everything else works great. One other thing to mention is the Audio Manager seems to case acore force closes in cyanogen time. Atleast that is how it goes for me.

Hey there..i was wondering if you got your app drawer tab to look like by using an app, or perhaps it came with a theme for donut/cupcake, or is it a themed hero rom, or maybe you made it yourself. Lol. I just wanna know where you got it, so i can make mine look like that too. Looks pretty slick! Thanks.

I uninstalled, removed any traces of it (data, dalvik-cache, etc) from Terminal, but it still wouldn't install.
I didn't have access to adb for a while but when I got around to it, I used adb to install the modded one again, then uninstalled it from Application Manager & reinstalled the one from the Market. My problem was fixed.

Alright after viewing newone757's thread: [Layout] Android Phone 7 (HDPI), I decided to mod some of the widgets that I use to WM7-style
So far I've modded genie widget, smooth calendar, and switchpro
so here is a link for smooth calendar and genie widget
genie widget:
http://www.mediafire.com/?yyypq8d9zdum629
smooth calendar:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cc07w6czp1cr8cq
switchpro:
please PM your proof of purchase
Installation:
smooth calendar and switchpro
- Uninstall if you already have these apps.
- Reinstall modded apk as normal apps
- I have signed the apk so there shouldn't be any issue
with switchpro, you need to make sure you choose no background
Genie widget
With RootExplorer
- copy modded apk
- paste in system/app
- change permission of apk to rw-r--r--
- reboot phone
Using adb
Type - adb devices (See your device)
Type - adb remount
Type - adb push GenieWidget.apk /system/app/GenieWidget.apk
It's nice to see a thread covering something other than just the .psd, hehe.
Very nice work, my man. Keep it up
LOL yeah i figured that too
Just send you a PM
any pictures?
please post any printscreens...

It's in the first post.
Try reading it.
If you don't know how to push the widgets to your phone, this is how:
- - -
Download the Android SDK
Extract the .zip to C:\
Rename it Android
Enter the folder and setup the SDK
Download everything it asks about
"Force https..." if you can't download.
Download the widgets
Put all the .apk is one folder
Rename the folder newapp and put it in C:\Android\tools
Start CMD - type cd C:\android\tools
Type - adb devices (See your device)
Type - adb remount
Type - adb push newapp system/app
I take it this is not the genie widget ported back to 1.5?
It would be interesting to make a whole new launcher "windows phone 7" style so we can replicate the various functions of the real win phone 7 "widgets".
Sadly i'm not able to code a single line, maybe someone else can make this huge work
Thanks for nice mods.
Could You tell me how to edit switchpro height? I would like to hide notification/status bar so I need to increase widgets height a little to remove such big gaps between icons.
Thanks
Update: I have edited appwidget_bg_null.9.png and appwidget_bg.9.png - added 2 lines of blue pixels to top and button, but have opposite effect - widget became smaller.
Update2: Here are the sizes of icons.
Update3: Ok, it seems that I should use some special editor, not PS.

T-Mobile/CM7 Theme List App!!

Edit: posted the app in the Market with updates. Get it here: http://bit.ly/theme_chooser
This will list all current CM7/T-Mobile themes. When you click a theme it will take you to the Android Market or website hosting the theme. You can filter by free/paid/hdpi/mdpi/ldpi and search by developer/description/name.
I have been working hard at re-doing Liberty Toolbox into a ROM Toolbox for every phone. A side project with that was creating a T-Mobile theme list for inside the Toolbox. My project is getting so big I developed the app as a side app so I could avoid waiting so long on building. I decided to share the app that will be included in ROM Toolbox.
This app was inspired by THIS thread. Major props to maxpower47 for building the list.
The list in the app is pulled from data on my server. If you would like to update this list it's easy to do and will show up in the app instantly. The list is here: http://jrummy16.com/jrummy/romtoolbox/tmobile_themes/tmobile_themes.xml
Please let me know if you would like to take the huge task of updating the list (gtalk: [email protected])

- Long Click item
- Don't reload data on switching orientation
- Don't show keyboard when first opening the app
- Some other stuff
I like this idea, downloading now to test. I'll let you know just now how it runs on Oxygen 2.2.
By the way, the link you posted to the list of themes points to a XML file, not a webpage...
Edit: Looks like it works nicely... I like the way the search feature filters the list as you type, that's a really nice touch! Have you got any way to show themes added to the list since the last time it was opened?

Thanks for testing it out. I like your suggestion too! I will have to update that. I just updated the filter to include "By Developer..". it's bed time for now though.
Thanks for this! Works great!
Sweet!! Downloading now, thanks for making this!
This is very nice. Thanks for making life even more convenient.
Just 1 minor problem. Let's say I filter the app to only show "free/donate themes." If the the theme link takes me to a market link, then I click the back button to go back to the app, it keeps my filter settings and goes back to the same theme I left off at. This doesn't happen though if the theme link takes me to a post here at XDA.
If the link brings me to XDA, then I click the back button to go back to the app, the app resets my filter settings and starts me over at the top of the list. Definitely not a deal breaker but gets pretty annoying since not all themes are in the market. Is there any way for it to keep my settings and my place, if it opens the browser for an XDA link?
Works great.. really good idea Thanks!

I was running 1.0 (installed before the update yesterday), so I tested with that before updating to 1.1.
Both versions the filter retains it's settings on my Desire whether the link takes me to Market or XDA. Perhaps it's something specific to either your device or your ROM? Works perfectly on Desire with Oxygen 2.2.
By the way Jrummy16, I really love the 'transparent' application theme you put in... Nice touch! Unfortunately though my chosen interface fonts (Sansation and SansationLight) make things interesting, but that's not a problem at all. I'm off to get the donate version now.
Awesome, love it!
Two requests:
1. Multiple filters at once (i.e. Free and HDPI)
2. (this may be hard, too much work!) in app screen shots!

I'd also agree with the first suggestion, perhaps setting up the filters as tick-boxes in a list instead of a pop-up menu would make it easier?
I think having screenshots in the list of themes would make it look messy (my honest opinion), but perhaps an indication of whether the theme is located in Market or XDA would be nice?
Either way, I'm still finding more and more interesting themes to try..
Updated in the market with multiple filter. .
bad sss
thanks
Omggggg ive been waiting on an app like this for so long!!!
Thanks so much!! Im abusing it!
I had an idea last night that would make this an even more useful app, but it sort of depends on how it works currently though... Does it store a list of themes locally or does it have to download the list each time you open the app?
It would be nice to be able to see what themes have been added to the list since the last time the app was opened.. With the number of themes in the list already, it would be really easy to miss newly added themes without even realising it.
For example:
On first run:
Themes
Theme 1
Theme 2
Theme 3
Theme 4
Click to collapse
This list would then be saved to the app's cache, and on the next launch it would be compared to the themes currently listed on the server (perhaps by a unique theme reference ID or something like that?).
On second run:
New Themes
Theme 5
Theme 6
Themes
Theme 1
Theme 2
Theme 3
Theme 4
Click to collapse
This would allow themes recently added to the theme list to be shown at the top of the list until the app is restarted (or 'notifications' cleared, whichever works best).
What do you think..?

You don't need the SPB launcher to get that theme. The 3D stuff in the middle is just that certain launcher. What you want is the notification bar theme right? I don't have it myself, as I don't use those themes, but I would suggest using the UOT kitchen and you can cook it yourself. It's pretty easy to figure out and get your own themes up and running.

I took some time and threw together what I THINK you're looking for... it was actually quite a bit more work than I thought it would be, but I just tested this out on my Nexus S (i9020a) on the latest CM7.1 Nightly (b. 180) and it worked fine.
I'd recommend backing up your Androidian.apk just in case something goes wrong, or even a full nand backup. You'll need to push this apk to /system/app and make sure permissions are set properly.
Here's what I did to set it:
1 - Use Root Explorer (or another file manager with root access) and go to /system/app
2 - Make sure the directory is mounted as RW
3 - Rename Androidian.apk to Androidian.apk.bak
4 - Browse to where you saved the modified APK on your SDCard and Copy/Move the modified apk to /system/app
5 - Set permissions (rw-r--r--)
6 - Reboot phone.
7 - Once phone is back up, go to Theme Manager and select Androidian.apk and apply.
8 - Hope it works for you like it did for me
I really like this a LOT. I've been thinking about requesting for it too. Can I add to the request please?
@tehgeekguy - Can you modify it further to remove the horizontal dividers in lists? Especially in sms and the menu lists. Pretty much like Minimalbread and Lucid. Please?

You mind taking a screenshot of what you mean? To be honest, I don't use themes at all, but I could tweak it how you'd like if you can show me what it is you're wanting changed.
Hello, Im hoping to remove all those white lines. Especially in messaging. That horizontal divider in message list or menu items. Please see attached image.

I THINK I got what you're wanting. I attached two screenshots with what I've managed so far. This will basically remove those bars from anywhere they'd normally show up (Settings menus, Messaging app, pop up menus, etc...). The screenshots show the Settings menu and the Power menu (I clear my messages daily so nothing in Messages to show but a black window).
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten it to work in a theme yet, but I can get it working with a morph, or you can yank the files and merge them manually if you know how, it's not too difficult. I'll keep poking around the theme files and see if I can get this put into the one I uploaded earlier. The morph is NoDividers.zip (attached).
WOW! This $hi+$ AMAZING! I can't THANK YOU enough! Best thing about this morph is that I can use ANY theme without those pesky dividers! Really NEAT man!
I really recommend this to anyone who love David's MinimalBread and Sonny Sekhon's Lucid.

Awesome Gear apps and font!

UPDATE! Check out the Metal Gear Solid 4 Sounds in the next post!
So I got my galaxy gear, and after installing null rom I'm loving it!
I used ifont to install a modified segoeui light font to have everything lowercase and the effect is just amazing! (it should have came like this!) (dl link below)
I also have sideloaded some super useful apps that work 100% (paid apps are brought via titanium backup (backup on phone move it to watch and restore on watch))
APPS:
Fine Chromatic Tuner (to tune my violin)
Sworkit (Pro) to workout in small quick intervals
Silence! (since it doesn't mirror the phone's silent times)
GMD Gesture Control (to add a menu and home gesture [this is super useful, I have it mapped to other apps too including Nova Launcher])
Speed Reader <- this one is amazing, (I'm actually using it until spritz comes out) but it lets you read text (like books and stuff) super fast, I can coherently read "Divergent" at 600 words per minute.
(Make sure to set the bg color to black and the text to whatever color)
to help optimize the speedreadrer app (so it takes advantage of the OLED screen) I also use
Full!Screen <- removes the status bar (be careful it also, for some reason, removes the recent app list)
Ultimate Rotation Control <- forces everything to remain in portrait mode so I can actually use apps that force landscape (and make it perpendicular to your hand)
Screen filter <- to read at night and lower the brightness intensity! (the grey probably affects the OLED black battery life thing)
I would post links but the system won't let me ahaha

Do you guys have anything you recommend putting on also?
Got some awesome sounds on my gear! (replaced the touch sounds and the charger sounds with effects from MGS4)
Use the Media Human converter to convert anything into an OGG file
Place all the .ogg files except for Ticktac.ogg into /system/media/audio/ui
USING ROOT BROWSER! (place on sdcard then use root browser to replace the files in the folder)
Ticktac.ogg goes into /system/media/audio/alarms
You can also set the codec sound as the ringtone by putting in on the SDcard in a folder named "Ringtones"
You can set an alert sound by putting it in the root of the SDcard named "Notifications"
I'll post a video soon.

There's a couple .zips within this .ZIP file. Where do those extracted sounds go? Thanks

The extra zips are extra sounds that you can use. If you decide to use them, you can parse them through Media Human Converter and rename them to what you wish to replace. The sounds that you can replace are in /system/media/audio/ui just make sure they are in an ogg format.
I'm just a fan of metal gear, I changed some of the svoice pings to the codec openings etc.
I actually quite like this, nice find dude !
I may include this font among others in the next version of the rom.
I'm curious where exactly did you find that lowercase font ? Did it by any chance come with a bold version also ?

So I got excited and made it for you anyway. Here you go! It includes the other missing styles AND the WP fonts ripped straight out of the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK.
I put the font on my Galaxy Note II (Skynote TW) also (using the AllBacksBlack theme) and it looks amazing too. Going to fix up a theme for it to make it more streamlined with the gear. The black and white scheme also helps save a bunch of battery life thanks to AMOLED screens.

Question. With ifont installed on the gear, how does one go about installing this font pack? Do you unzip it first or place it in /ifont/custom or what?
Thanks

You would place the extracted ttf files into a folder called IFont on the root of the 'sd card' and use the app (click custom) and use it to install it. (Or you can tap the click this button in the app and navigate to where it is). Afterwards, hit the name of the font you want to install and click set.
If you still have access the the stock gear settings app, just place it in a folder called fonts and go to settings and change the font.
Look Google glass fonts! (not lowercase lol)
